आश्रमो वै वसिष्ठस्य स्थाणुतीर्थेऽभवन्महान्। पूर्वतः पश्चिमश्चासीद्विश्वामित्रस्य धीमतः ॥९-४१-४॥

tatrāpyadhikasantāpo viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ। dṛṣṭvā tejo vasiṣṭhasya cintāmabhijagāma ha ॥ tasya buddhiriyaṃ hyāsīddharmanityasya bhārata ॥9-41-10॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; अधिक (adhika) - excessive; सन्तापः (santāpaḥ) - sorrow; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; चिन्ताम् (cintām) - worry; अभिजगाम (abhijagāma) - entered; सः (saḥ) - he; तस्य (tasya) - his; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - thought; इयम् (iyam) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; धर्मनित्यस्य (dharmanityasya) - of the one who is ever righteous; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]

इयं सरस्वती तूर्णं मत्समीपं तपोधनम्। आनयिष्यति वेगेन वसिष्ठं जपतां वरम् ॥ इहागतं द्विजश्रेष्ठं हनिष्यामि न संशयः ॥९-४१-११॥
iyaṁ sarasvatī tūrṇaṁ matsamīpaṁ tapodhanam। ānayiṣyati vegena vasiṣṭhaṁ japatāṁ varam ॥ ihāgataṁ dvijaśreṣṭhaṁ haniṣyāmi na sanśayaḥ ॥9-41-11॥
[इयं (iyaṁ) - this; सरस्वती (sarasvatī) - Saraswati; तूर्णं (tūrṇaṁ) - quickly; मत्समीपं (matsamīpaṁ) - to my presence; तपोधनम् (tapodhanam) - sage; आनयिष्यति (ānayiṣyati) - will bring; वेगेन (vegena) - swiftly; वसिष्ठं (vasiṣṭhaṁ) - Vasistha; जपतां (japatāṁ) - of the chanters; वरम् (varam) - the best; इहागतं (ihāgataṁ) - arrived here; द्विजश्रेष्ठं (dvijaśreṣṭhaṁ) - best of the twice-born; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I will kill; न (na) - not; संशयः (sanśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(This Saraswati will quickly bring the sage to my presence, swiftly Vasistha, the best of the chanters. Having arrived here, I will kill the best of the twice-born, no doubt.)
Saraswati will swiftly bring the sage Vasistha to me, the best among the chanters. Once he arrives here, I will certainly kill the best of the twice-born, without any doubt.
एवं निश्चित्य भगवान्विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः। सस्मार सरितां श्रेष्ठां क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः ॥९-४१-१२॥
evaṃ niścitya bhagavānviśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ। sasmāra saritāṃ śreṣṭhāṃ krodhasaṃraktalocanaḥ ॥9-41-12॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; निश्चित्य (niścitya) - having decided; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered sage; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage; सस्मार (sasmāra) - remembered; सरिताम् (saritām) - of the rivers; श्रेष्ठाम् (śreṣṭhām) - the best; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; संरक्त (saṃrakta) - reddened; लोचनः (locanaḥ) - eyes;]
(Thus having decided, the revered sage Viśvāmitra, the great sage, remembered the best of the rivers, his eyes reddened with anger.)
Having made up his mind, the revered sage Viśvāmitra, filled with anger, recalled the best of the rivers, his eyes turning red with rage.
सा ध्याता मुनिना तेन व्याकुलत्वं जगाम ह। जज्ञे चैनं महावीर्यं महाकोपं च भामिनी ॥९-४१-१३॥
sā dhyātā muninā tena vyākulatvaṃ jagāma ha। jajñe cainaṃ mahāvīryaṃ mahākopaṃ ca bhāminī ॥9-41-13॥
[सा (sā) - she; ध्याता (dhyātā) - meditated upon; मुनिना (muninā) - by the sage; तेन (tena) - by him; व्याकुलत्वं (vyākulatvaṃ) - agitation; जगाम (jagāma) - attained; ह (ha) - indeed; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; च (ca) - and; एनं (enaṃ) - this; महावीर्यं (mahāvīryaṃ) - great heroism; महाकोपं (mahākopaṃ) - great anger; च (ca) - and; भामिनी (bhāminī) - the radiant lady;]
(She, meditated upon by the sage, indeed attained agitation. The radiant lady was born with great heroism and great anger.)
The sage's meditation caused her to become agitated. The radiant lady was born with immense heroism and anger.
तत एनं वेपमाना विवर्णा प्राञ्जलिस्तदा। उपतस्थे मुनिवरं विश्वामित्रं सरस्वती ॥९-४१-१४॥
tata enaṃ vepamānā vivarṇā prāñjalistadā। upatasthe munivaraṃ viśvāmitraṃ sarasvatī ॥9-41-14॥

[हतवीरा (hatavīrā) - having lost her heroes; यथा (yathā) - as; नारी (nārī) - woman; सा (sā) - she; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; दुःखिता (duḥkhitā) - sorrowful; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; किं (kiṃ) - what; करवाणी (karavāṇi) - shall I do; इति (iti) - thus; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; मुनिसत्तमम् (munisattamam) - to the best of sages;]
(Having lost her heroes, the woman became greatly sorrowful. She said to the best of sages, "Tell me, what shall I do?")

तामुवाच मुनिः क्रुद्धो वसिष्ठं शीघ्रमानय। यावदेनं निहन्म्यद्य तच्छ्रुत्वा व्यथिता नदी ॥९-४१-१६॥
tāmuvāca muniḥ kruddho vasiṣṭhaṃ śīghramānaya। yāvadenaṃ nihanmyadya tacchrutvā vyathitā nadī ॥9-41-16॥

साञ्जलिं तु ततः कृत्वा पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणा। विव्यथे सुविरूढेव लता वायुसमीरिता ॥९-४१-१७॥
sāñjaliṁ tu tataḥ kṛtvā puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇā। vivyathe suvirūḍheva latā vāyusamīritā ॥9-41-17॥
[साञ्जलिम् (sāñjalim) - with folded hands; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; पुण्डरीक (puṇḍarīka) - lotus-like; निभ (nibha) - resembling; ईक्षणा (īkṣaṇā) - eyes; विव्यथे (vivyathe) - was agitated; सुविरूढा (suvirūḍhā) - well-grown; इव (iva) - like; लता (latā) - a creeper; वायुसमीरिता (vāyusamīritā) - stirred by the wind;]

(Having arrived thus, but seeing her trembling with joined palms, Viśvāmitra angrily said, "Bring Vasiṣṭha quickly.")

(Then, the best of rivers, fearful, thought, O Bharata, of both curses, fearful, how this will be.)

साभिगम्य वसिष्ठं तु इममर्थमचोदयत्। यदुक्ता सरितां श्रेष्ठा विश्वामित्रेण धीमता ॥९-४१-२०॥
sābhigamya vasiṣṭhaṃ tu imamarthamacodayat। yaduktā saritāṃ śreṣṭhā viśvāmitreṇa dhīmatā ॥9-41-20॥

उभयोः शापयोर्भीता वेपमाना पुनः पुनः। चिन्तयित्वा महाशापमृषिवित्रासिता भृशम् ॥९-४१-२१॥

She, fearful of both curses and trembling repeatedly, thought deeply about the great curse and was greatly terrified by the sage.
तां कृशां च विवर्णां च दृष्ट्वा चिन्तासमन्विताम्। उवाच राजन्धर्मात्मा वसिष्ठो द्विपदां वरः ॥९-४१-२२॥
tāṃ kṛśāṃ ca vivarṇāṃ ca dṛṣṭvā cintāsamanvitām। uvāca rājandharmātmā vasiṣṭho dvipadāṃ varaḥ ॥9-41-22॥

(Seeing her thin and pale, afflicted with anxiety, the righteous king Vasishtha, the best of bipeds, said:)
Upon seeing her thin and pale, and filled with anxiety, the righteous King Vasishtha, the best among bipeds, spoke.
त्राह्यात्मानं सरिच्छ्रेष्ठे वह मां शीघ्रगामिनी। विश्वामित्रः शपेद्धि त्वां मा कृथास्त्वं विचारणाम् ॥९-४१-२३॥
trāhyātmānaṃ saricchreṣṭhe vaha māṃ śīghragāminī। viśvāmitraḥ śapeddhi tvāṃ mā kṛthāstvaṃ vicāraṇām ॥9-41-23॥

(Protect yourself, O best of rivers, carry me, O swift-flowing one. Viśvāmitra may indeed curse you; do not hesitate.)

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कृपाशीलस्य सा सरित्। चिन्तयामास कौरव्य किं कृतं सुकृतं भवेत् ॥९-४१-२४॥
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā kṛpāśīlasya sā sarit। cintayāmāsa kauravya kiṁ kṛtaṁ sukṛtaṁ bhavet ॥9-41-24॥

(Having heard his words, the compassionate river thought, "O descendant of Kuru, what good deed might have been done?")
Upon hearing his words, the compassionate river pondered, "O descendant of Kuru, what virtuous act could have been accomplished?"
तस्याश्चिन्ता समुत्पन्ना वसिष्ठो मय्यतीव हि। कृतवान्हि दयां नित्यं तस्य कार्यं हितं मया ॥९-४१-२५॥
tasyāścintā samutpannā vasiṣṭho mayyatīva hi। kṛtavānhi dayāṃ nityaṃ tasya kāryaṃ hitaṃ mayā ॥9-41-25॥

(Then, on his own bank, O king, seeing the best of sages chanting, offering oblations, Kaushika, Saraswati thought.)

तेन कूलापहारेण मैत्रावरुणिरौह्यत। उह्यमानश्च तुष्टाव तदा राजन्सरस्वतीम् ॥९-४१-२८॥
tena kūlāpahāreṇa maitrāvaruṇirauhyata। uhyamānaśca tuṣṭāva tadā rājansarasvatīm ॥9-41-28॥

(By that removal of the bank, Maitrāvaruṇi was carried away. Being carried, he then praised Sarasvati, O king.)

पितामहस्य सरसः प्रवृत्तासि सरस्वति। व्याप्तं चेदं जगत्सर्वं तवैवाम्भोभिरुत्तमैः ॥९-४१-२९॥
pitāmahasya sarasaḥ pravṛttāsi sarasvati। vyāptaṃ cedaṃ jagatsarvaṃ tavaivāmbhobhiruttamaiḥ ॥9-41-29॥

(You have originated from the lake of the grandsire, O Sarasvati. This entire world is indeed pervaded by your excellent waters.)

त्वमेवाकाशगा देवि मेघेषूत्सृजसे पयः। सर्वाश्चापस्त्वमेवेति त्वत्तो वयमधीमहे ॥९-४१-३०॥
tvamevākāśagā devi megheṣūtsṛjase payaḥ। sarvāścāpastvameveti tvatto vayamadhīmahe ॥9-41-30॥

(You alone, O goddess, release water in the clouds. All waters are indeed from you, thus we understand.)

पुष्टिर्द्युतिस्तथा कीर्तिः सिद्धिर्वृद्धिरुमा तथा। त्वमेव वाणी स्वाहा त्वं त्वय्यायत्तमिदं जगत् ॥ त्वमेव सर्वभूतेषु वससीह चतुर्विधा ॥९-४१-३१॥
puṣṭirdyutistathā kīrtiḥ siddhirvṛddhirumā tathā। tvameva vāṇī svāhā tvaṃ tvayyāyattamidaṃ jagat ॥ tvameva sarvabhūteṣu vasasīha caturvidhā ॥9-41-31॥

(Nourishment, splendor, fame, success, growth, Uma, and you are indeed speech, Svaha, you. In you, this world is dependent. You indeed dwell in all beings here in fourfold ways.)

एवं सरस्वती राजन्स्तूयमाना महर्षिणा। वेगेनोवाह तं विप्रं विश्वामित्राश्रमं प्रति ॥ न्यवेदयत चाभीक्ष्णं विश्वामित्राय तं मुनिम् ॥९-४१-३२॥
evaṃ sarasvatī rājan stūyamānā maharṣiṇā। vegenovāha taṃ vipraṃ viśvāmitrāśramaṃ prati ॥ nyavedayata cābhīkṣṇaṃ viśvāmitrāya taṃ munim ॥9-41-32॥

(Thus, O king, Sarasvati, being praised by the great sage, swiftly carried that sage towards Viśvāmitra's hermitage and repeatedly presented that sage to Viśvāmitra.)

(Having seen that brought by Sarasvati, filled with anger, then sought the weapon destroying Vasistha, then.)
Upon seeing what was brought by Sarasvati, he was filled with anger and then sought the weapon that would destroy Vasistha.
तं तु क्रुद्धमभिप्रेक्ष्य ब्रह्महत्याभयान्नदी। अपोवाह वसिष्ठं तु प्राचीं दिशमतन्द्रिता ॥ उभयोः कुर्वती वाक्यं वञ्चयित्वा तु गाधिजम् ॥९-४१-३४॥
taṁ tu kruddhamabhiprekṣya brahmahatyābhayānnadī। apovāha vasiṣṭhaṁ tu prācīṁ diśamatandritā ॥ ubhayoḥ kurvatī vākyaṁ vañcayitvā tu gādhijam ॥9-41-34॥

(But having seen him angry, the river, out of fear of killing a Brahmin, carried Vasiṣṭha away to the eastern direction without fatigue, deceiving the son of Gādhi by doing the words of both.)

(Then, having seen Vasiṣṭha, the best of sages, removed, Viśvāmitra, indeed intolerant, said angrily.)

यस्मान्मा त्वं सरिच्छ्रेष्ठे वञ्चयित्वा पुनर्गता। शोणितं वह कल्याणि रक्षोग्रामणिसंमतम् ॥९-४१-३६॥
yasmān mā tvaṃ saricchreṣṭhe vañcayitvā punargatā। śoṇitaṃ vaha kalyāṇi rakṣogrāmaṇisaṃmatam ॥9-41-36॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; मा (mā) - not; त्वम् (tvam) - you; सरित्-श्रेष्ठे (sarit-śreṣṭhe) - O best of rivers; वञ्चयित्वा (vañcayitvā) - having deceived; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; गता (gatā) - gone; शोणितम् (śoṇitam) - blood; वह (vaha) - carry; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; रक्षः-ग्रामणि-संमतम् (rakṣaḥ-grāmaṇi-saṃmatam) - approved by the chief of demons;]
(Because you, O best of rivers, having deceived, have gone again. Carry the blood, O auspicious one, approved by the chief of demons.)

ततः सरस्वती शप्ता विश्वामित्रेण धीमता। अवहच्छोणितोन्मिश्रं तोयं संवत्सरं तदा ॥९-४१-३७॥
tataḥ sarasvatī śaptā viśvāmitreṇa dhīmatā। avahacchoṇitonmiśraṃ toyaṃ saṃvatsaraṃ tadā ॥9-41-37॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सरस्वती (sarasvatī) - Sarasvati; शप्ता (śaptā) - cursed; विश्वामित्रेण (viśvāmitreṇa) - by Vishvamitra; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; अवहत् (avahat) - carried away; शोणित (śoṇita) - blood; उन्मिश्रं (unmiśraṃ) - mixed with; तोयं (toyaṃ) - water; संवत्सरं (saṃvatsaraṃ) - for a year; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then Sarasvati, cursed by the wise Vishvamitra, carried away the water mixed with blood for a year.)

[अथ (atha) - then; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; गन्धर्व (gandharva) - celestial musicians; अप्सरसः (apsarasaḥ) - nymphs; तथा (tathā) - also; सरस्वतीम् (sarasvatīm) - Sarasvati; तथा (tathā) - also; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; भृशदुःखिताः (bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ) - very sorrowful;]
(Then the sages, gods, celestial musicians, and nymphs, having seen Sarasvati, became very sorrowful.)

एवं वसिष्ठापवाहो लोके ख्यातो जनाधिप। आगच्छच्च पुनर्मार्गं स्वमेव सरितां वरा ॥९-४१-३९॥

(Thus, O ruler of people, Vasishtha's stream, known in the world, came back to its own path, indeed the best of rivers.)
