सा शप्ता तेन क्रुद्धेन विश्वामित्रेण धीमता। तस्मिंस्तीर्थवरे शुभ्रे शोणितं समुपावहत् ॥९-४२-१॥
sā śaptā tena kruddhena viśvāmitreṇa dhīmatā। tasmiṃstīrthavare śubhre śoṇitaṃ samupāvahat ॥9-42-1॥
[सा (sā) - she; शप्ता (śaptā) - cursed; तेन (tena) - by him; क्रुद्धेन (kruddhena) - angry; विश्वामित्रेण (viśvāmitreṇa) - by Viśvāmitra; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तीर्थवरे (tīrthavare) - sacred place; शुभ्रे (śubhre) - pure; शोणितं (śoṇitam) - blood; समुपावहत् (samupāvahat) - brought forth;]
(She, cursed by the angry and wise Viśvāmitra, brought forth blood in that pure sacred place.)

अथाजग्मुस्ततो राजन्राक्षसास्तत्र भारत। तत्र ते शोणितं सर्वे पिबन्तः सुखमासते ॥९-४२-२॥

[अथ (atha) - then; आजग्मुः (ājagmuḥ) - arrived; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; राजन् (rājan) - O king; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - demons; तत्र (tatra) - there; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; तत्र (tatra) - there; ते (te) - they; शोणितं (śoṇitaṃ) - blood; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पिबन्तः (pibantaḥ) - drinking; सुखम् (sukham) - happily; आसते (āsate) - sit;]
(Then, O king, thereafter demons arrived there, O descendant of Bharata. There, they all sit happily drinking blood.)

तृप्ताश्च सुभृशं तेन सुखिता विगतज्वराः। नृत्यन्तश्च हसन्तश्च यथा स्वर्गजितस्तथा ॥९-४२-३॥
tṛptāśca subhṛśaṃ tena sukhitā vigatajvarāḥ। nṛtyantaśca hasantaśca yathā svargajitastathā ॥9-42-3॥
[तृप्ताः (tṛptāḥ) - satisfied; च (ca) - and; सुभृशम् (subhṛśam) - very much; तेन (tena) - by him; सुखिताः (sukhitāḥ) - happy; विगतज्वराः (vigatajvarāḥ) - free from distress; नृत्यन्तः (nṛtyantaḥ) - dancing; च (ca) - and; हसन्तः (hasantaḥ) - laughing; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; स्वर्गजितः (svargajitaḥ) - the conqueror of heaven; तथा (tathā) - so; ॥९-४२-३॥ (॥9-42-3॥) - (verse number);]
(Satisfied and very much happy by him, free from distress, dancing and laughing, as the conqueror of heaven, so.)
They were satisfied and very happy because of him, free from distress, dancing and laughing, just like the conqueror of heaven.
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य ऋषयः सतपोधनाः। तीर्थयात्रां समाजग्मुः सरस्वत्यां महीपते ॥९-४२-४॥
kasyacit tvatha kālasya ṛṣayaḥ satapodhanāḥ। tīrthayātrāṃ samājagmuḥ sarasvatyāṃ mahīpate ॥9-42-4॥
[कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of a certain; तथा (tathā) - then; कालस्य (kālasya) - time; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; सतपोधनाः (satapodhanāḥ) - rich in penance; तीर्थयात्राम् (tīrthayātrām) - pilgrimage; समाजग्मुः (samājagmuḥ) - arrived; सरस्वत्याम् (sarasvatyām) - at Sarasvati; महीपते (mahīpate) - O King;]
(Then, O King, at a certain time, sages rich in penance arrived for a pilgrimage at Sarasvati.)
At a certain time, the sages, who were rich in penance, embarked on a pilgrimage to the Sarasvati, O King.
तेषु सर्वेषु तीर्थेषु आप्लुत्य मुनिपुङ्गवाः। प्राप्य प्रीतिं परां चापि तपोलुब्धा विशारदाः ॥ प्रययुर्हि ततो राजन्येन तीर्थं हि तत्तथा ॥९-४२-५॥
teṣu sarveṣu tīrtheṣu āplutya munipuṅgavāḥ। prāpya prītiṃ parāṃ cāpi tapolubdhā viśāradāḥ ॥ prayayurhi tato rājanyena tīrthaṃ hi tattathā ॥9-42-5॥
[तेषु (teṣu) - in those; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - all; तीर्थेषु (tīrtheṣu) - holy places; आप्लुत्य (āplutya) - having bathed; मुनिपुङ्गवाः (munipuṅgavāḥ) - great sages; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; प्रीतिं (prītiṃ) - satisfaction; परां (parāṃ) - supreme; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तपोलुब्धाः (tapolubdhāḥ) - desirous of penance; विशारदाः (viśāradāḥ) - wise; प्रययुः (prayayur) - departed; हि (hi) - indeed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजन्येन (rājanyena) - with the king; तीर्थं (tīrthaṃ) - holy place; हि (hi) - indeed; तत्तथा (tattathā) - that way;]
(In those holy places, having bathed, the great sages, having obtained supreme satisfaction, desirous of penance and wise, indeed departed then with the king to that holy place in that way.)
The great sages, having bathed in all those holy places and having attained supreme satisfaction, being desirous of penance and wise, then departed with the king to that holy place.
अथागम्य महाभागास्तत्तीर्थं दारुणं तदा। दृष्ट्वा तोयं सरस्वत्याः शोणितेन परिप्लुतम् ॥ पीयमानं च रक्षोभिर्बहुभिर्नृपसत्तम ॥९-४२-६॥
athāgamya mahābhāgāstattīrthaṃ dāruṇaṃ tadā। dṛṣṭvā toyaṃ sarasvatyāḥ śoṇitena pariplutam ॥ pīyamānaṃ ca rakṣobhirbahubhirnṛpasattama ॥9-42-6॥
[अथ (atha) - then; आगम्य (āgamya) - having arrived; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - great souls; तत् (tat) - that; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - holy place; दारुणं (dāruṇam) - terrible; तदा (tadā) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तोयं (toyam) - water; सरस्वत्याः (sarasvatyāḥ) - of Sarasvati; शोणितेन (śoṇitena) - with blood; परिप्लुतम् (pariplutam) - flooded; पीयमानं (pīyamānam) - being drunk; च (ca) - and; रक्षोभिः (rakṣobhiḥ) - by demons; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - many; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - O best of kings;]
(Then, having arrived, the great souls saw that terrible holy place. They saw the water of Sarasvati flooded with blood, being drunk by many demons, O best of kings.)
Then, the great souls arrived at that terrible holy place and saw the waters of the Sarasvati river, which were flooded with blood and being drunk by many demons, O best of kings.
तान्दृष्ट्वा राक्षसान्राजन्मुनयः संशितव्रताः। परित्राणे सरस्वत्याः परं यत्नं प्रचक्रिरे ॥९-४२-७॥
tāndṛṣṭvā rākṣasānrājanmunayaḥ saṃśitavratāḥ। paritrāṇe sarasvatyāḥ paraṃ yatnaṃ pracakrire ॥9-42-7॥
[तान् (tān) - them; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; राक्षसान् (rākṣasān) - demons; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; संशितव्रताः (saṃśitavratāḥ) - of firm vows; परित्राणे (paritrāṇe) - for the protection; सरस्वत्याः (sarasvatyāḥ) - of Sarasvati; परं (paraṃ) - great; यत्नं (yatnaṃ) - effort; प्रचक्रिरे (pracakrire) - made.;]
(Having seen them, the demons, O king, the sages of firm vows made great effort for the protection of Sarasvati.)
Upon seeing the demons, O king, the sages, who were steadfast in their vows, made a great effort to protect Sarasvati.
ते तु सर्वे महाभागाः समागम्य महाव्रताः। आहूय सरितां श्रेष्ठामिदं वचनमब्रुवन् ॥९-४२-८॥
te tu sarve mahābhāgāḥ samāgamya mahāvratāḥ। āhūya saritāṃ śreṣṭhāmidaṃ vacanamabruvan ॥9-42-8॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; सर्वे (sarve) - all; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - illustrious ones; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having assembled; महाव्रताः (mahāvratāḥ) - great vow holders; आहूय (āhūya) - having summoned; सरितां (saritāṃ) - of rivers; श्रेष्ठाम् (śreṣṭhām) - the best; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they spoke;]
(They, the illustrious ones, having assembled and being great vow holders, summoned the best of rivers and spoke this speech.)
The illustrious ones, having gathered and being committed to great vows, summoned the best of rivers and said this.
कारणं ब्रूहि कल्याणि किमर्थं ते ह्रदो ह्ययम्। एवमाकुलतां यातः श्रुत्वा पास्यामहे वयम् ॥९-४२-९॥
kāraṇaṁ brūhi kalyāṇi kimarthaṁ te hrado hyayam। evamākulatāṁ yātaḥ śrutvā pāsyāmahe vayam ॥9-42-9॥
[कारणम् (kāraṇam) - reason; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - why; ते (te) - your; ह्रदः (hradaḥ) - lake; हि (hi) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; एवम् (evam) - thus; आकुलताम् (ākulatām) - distress; यातः (yātaḥ) - has reached; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पास्यामहे (pāsyāmahe) - we shall drink; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Tell the reason, O auspicious one, why your lake indeed has reached this distress. Having heard, we shall drink.)
O auspicious one, please tell us the reason why your lake has become so distressed. Upon hearing, we shall drink from it.
ततः सा सर्वमाचष्ट यथावृत्तं प्रवेपती। दुःखितामथ तां दृष्ट्वा त ऊचुर्वै तपोधनाः ॥९-४२-१०॥
tataḥ sā sarvam ācaṣṭa yathāvṛttaṃ pravepatī। duḥkhitām atha tāṃ dṛṣṭvā ta ūcur vai tapodhanāḥ ॥9-42-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - told; यथावृत्तम् (yathāvṛttam) - as it happened; प्रवेपती (pravepatī) - trembling; दुःखिताम् (duḥkhitām) - sorrowful; अथ (atha) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; ते (te) - they; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; वै (vai) - indeed; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - sages;]
(Then she told everything as it happened, trembling. Then, having seen her sorrowful, the sages indeed said:)
Then she, trembling, recounted everything as it happened. Seeing her sorrowful, the sages spoke to her.
कारणं श्रुतमस्माभिः शापश्चैव श्रुतोऽनघे। करिष्यन्ति तु यत्प्राप्तं सर्व एव तपोधनाः ॥९-४२-११॥
kāraṇaṃ śrutamasmābhiḥ śāpaścaiva śruto'naghe। kariṣyanti tu yatprāptaṃ sarva eva tapodhanāḥ ॥9-42-11॥
[कारणम् (kāraṇam) - reason; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; शापः (śāpaḥ) - curse; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - heard; अनघे (anaghe) - O sinless one; करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - will do; तु (tu) - but; यत् (yat) - what; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - obtained; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - sages;]
(The reason has been heard by us, and the curse too, O sinless one. But all the sages will indeed do what has been obtained.)
We have heard the reason and the curse, O sinless one. However, all the sages will act according to what has been decreed.
एवमुक्त्वा सरिच्छ्रेष्ठामूचुस्तेऽथ परस्परम्। विमोचयामहे सर्वे शापादेतां सरस्वतीम् ॥९-४२-१२॥
evamuktvā saricchreṣṭhāmūcuste'tha parasparam। vimocayāmahe sarve śāpādetāṃ sarasvatīm ॥9-42-12॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सरित् (sarit) - river; श्रेष्ठाम् (śreṣṭhām) - best; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; ते (te) - they; अथ (atha) - then; परस्परम् (parasparam) - to each other; विमोचयामहे (vimocayāmahe) - let us free; सर्वे (sarve) - all; शापात् (śāpāt) - from the curse; एताम् (etām) - this; सरस्वतीम् (sarasvatīm) - Sarasvati;]
(Thus having spoken to the best of rivers, they then said to each other, "Let us all free this Sarasvati from the curse.")
After speaking thus to the best of rivers, they conversed among themselves and decided to free Sarasvati from the curse.
तेषां तु वचनादेव प्रकृतिस्था सरस्वती। प्रसन्नसलिला जज्ञे यथा पूर्वं तथैव हि ॥ विमुक्ता च सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा विबभौ सा यथा पुरा ॥९-४२-१३॥
teṣāṃ tu vacanādeva prakṛtisthā sarasvatī। prasannasalilā jajñe yathā pūrvaṃ tathaiva hi ॥ vimuktā ca saricchreṣṭhā vibabhau sā yathā purā ॥9-42-13॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; तु (tu) - but; वचनात् (vacanāt) - from the words; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रकृतिस्था (prakṛtisthā) - in her original state; सरस्वती (sarasvatī) - Sarasvati; प्रसन्नसलिला (prasannasalilā) - with clear waters; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; यथा (yathā) - as; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; हि (hi) - indeed; विमुक्ता (vimuktā) - liberated; च (ca) - and; सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा (saricchreṣṭhā) - the best of rivers; विबभौ (vibabhau) - shone; सा (sā) - she; यथा (yathā) - as; पुरा (purā) - before;]
(But from their words, Sarasvati, in her original state, with clear waters, was born just as before. Liberated, the best of rivers shone as she did before.)
Upon hearing their words, Sarasvati returned to her original state with clear waters, appearing just as she did in the past. Liberated, the best of rivers shone as she once did.
दृष्ट्वा तोयं सरस्वत्या मुनिभिस्तैस्तथा कृतम्। कृताञ्जलीस्ततो राजन्राक्षसाः क्षुधयार्दिताः ॥ ऊचुस्तान्वै मुनीन्सर्वान्कृपायुक्तान्पुनः पुनः ॥९-४२-१४॥
dṛṣṭvā toyaṃ sarasvatyā munibhistaiḥ tathā kṛtam। kṛtāñjalīs tato rājan rākṣasāḥ kṣudhaya arditāḥ ॥ ūcus tān vai munīn sarvān kṛpāyuktān punaḥ punaḥ ॥9-42-14॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तोयं (toyaṃ) - water; सरस्वत्या (sarasvatyā) - of Sarasvati; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - by sages; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; तथा (tathā) - thus; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; कृताञ्जलीः (kṛtāñjalīḥ) - with folded hands; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - demons; क्षुधया (kṣudhaya) - by hunger; अर्दिताः (arditāḥ) - afflicted; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; तान् (tān) - to them; वै (vai) - indeed; मुनीन् (munīn) - sages; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; कृपायुक्तान् (kṛpāyuktān) - full of compassion; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Having seen the water of Sarasvati, thus done by the sages, then, O king, the demons, afflicted by hunger, with folded hands, said to all the sages, full of compassion, again and again.)
Upon seeing the water of the Sarasvati, which was thus prepared by the sages, the demons, afflicted by hunger, approached the sages with folded hands and repeatedly pleaded with them, "O compassionate ones."
वयं हि क्षुधिताश्चैव धर्माद्धीनाश्च शाश्वतात्। न च नः कामकारोऽयं यद्वयं पापकारिणः ॥९-४२-१५॥
vayaṁ hi kṣudhitāścaiva dharmāddhīnāśca śāśvatāt। na ca naḥ kāmakāro'yaṁ yadvayaṁ pāpakāriṇaḥ ॥9-42-15॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; हि (hi) - indeed; क्षुधिताः (kṣudhitāḥ) - hungry; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from righteousness; हीनाः (hīnāḥ) - deprived; च (ca) - and; शाश्वतात् (śāśvatāt) - eternal; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; नः (naḥ) - our; कामकारः (kāmakāraḥ) - free will; अयम् (ayam) - this; यत् (yat) - that; वयम् (vayam) - we; पापकारिणः (pāpakāriṇaḥ) - sinners;]
(We indeed are hungry and deprived of righteousness eternally. And this is not our free will that we are sinners.)
We are indeed hungry and deprived of eternal righteousness. It is not our free will that makes us sinners.
युष्माकं चाप्रसादेन दुष्कृतेन च कर्मणा। पक्षोऽयं वर्धतेऽस्माकं यतः स्म ब्रह्मराक्षसाः ॥९-४२-१६॥
yuṣmākaṃ cāprasādena duṣkṛtena ca karmaṇā। pakṣo'yaṃ vardhate'smākaṃ yataḥ sma brahmarākṣasāḥ ॥9-42-16॥
[युष्माकं (yuṣmākam) - your; च (ca) - and; अप्रसादेन (aprasādena) - displeasure; दुष्कृतेन (duṣkṛtena) - by evil deeds; च (ca) - and; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; पक्षः (pakṣaḥ) - side; अयम् (ayam) - this; वर्धते (vardhate) - grows; अस्माकं (asmākam) - our; यतः (yataḥ) - because; स्म (sma) - indeed; ब्रह्मराक्षसाः (brahmarākṣasāḥ) - Brahma-Rakshasas;]
(Your displeasure and evil deeds, and by action, this side grows ours because indeed Brahma-Rakshasas.)
Due to your displeasure and evil actions, our side is growing stronger because of the Brahma-Rakshasas.
एवं हि वैश्यशूद्राणां क्षत्रियाणां तथैव च। ये ब्राह्मणान्प्रद्विषन्ति ते भवन्तीह राक्षसाः ॥९-४२-१७॥
evaṃ hi vaiśyaśūdrāṇāṃ kṣatriyāṇāṃ tathaiva ca। ye brāhmaṇānpradviṣanti te bhavantīha rākṣasāḥ ॥9-42-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; वैश्यशूद्राणाम् (vaiśyaśūdrāṇām) - of the Vaishyas and Shudras; क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the Kshatriyas; तथा (tathā) - also; एव (eva) - certainly; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - those who; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brahmins; प्रद्विषन्ति (pradviṣanti) - hate; ते (te) - they; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; इह (iha) - here; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - demons;]
(Thus indeed, those who hate the Brahmins among the Vaishyas, Shudras, and Kshatriyas, they become demons here.)
Thus, those among the Vaishyas, Shudras, and Kshatriyas who hate the Brahmins, indeed become demons here.
आचार्यमृत्विजं चैव गुरुं वृद्धजनं तथा। प्राणिनो येऽवमन्यन्ते ते भवन्तीह राक्षसाः ॥ योषितां चैव पापानां योनिदोषेण वर्धते ॥९-४२-१८॥
ācāryamṛtvijaṃ caiva guruṃ vṛddhajanaṃ tathā। prāṇino ye'vamanyante te bhavantīha rākṣasāḥ ॥ yoṣitāṃ caiva pāpānāṃ yonidoṣeṇa vardhate ॥9-42-18॥
[आचार्यम् (ācāryam) - teacher; ऋत्विजम् (ṛtvijam) - priest; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गुरुम् (gurum) - elder; वृद्धजनम् (vṛddhajanam) - old person; तथा (tathā) - also; प्राणिनः (prāṇinaḥ) - living beings; ये (ye) - who; अवमन्यन्ते (avamanyante) - disrespect; ते (te) - they; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; इह (iha) - here; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - demons; योषिताम् (yoṣitām) - of women; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पापानाम् (pāpānām) - of the sinful; योनिदोषेण (yonidoṣeṇa) - by defect of birth; वर्धते (vardhate) - grows;]
(The teacher, the priest, the elder, and the old person, those living beings who disrespect them become demons here. The sinful women grow by defect of birth.)
Those who disrespect teachers, priests, elders, and the elderly are considered demons here. Sinful women grow due to defects in their birth.
तत्कुरुध्वमिहास्माकं कारुण्यं द्विजसत्तमाः। शक्ता भवन्तः सर्वेषां लोकानामपि तारणे ॥९-४२-१९॥
tatkurudhvamihāsmākaṃ kāruṇyaṃ dvijasattamāḥ। śaktā bhavantaḥ sarveṣāṃ lokānāmapi tāraṇe ॥9-42-19॥
[तत् (tat) - that; कुरुध्वम् (kurudhvam) - do; इह (iha) - here; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; कारुण्यम् (kāruṇyam) - compassion; द्विजसत्तमाः (dvijasattamāḥ) - O best of the twice-born; शक्ताः (śaktāḥ) - capable; भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you all; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - worlds; अपि (api) - even; तारणे (tāraṇe) - in saving;]
(Do that compassion here for us, O best of the twice-born; you all are capable of saving even all the worlds.)
"O best of the twice-born, please show compassion here for us, as you are capable of saving all the worlds."
तेषां ते मुनयः श्रुत्वा तुष्टुवुस्तां महानदीम्। मोक्षार्थं रक्षसां तेषामूचुः प्रयतमानसाः ॥

yasyānte'bhūtsumahāndānavānāṃ; daiteyānāṃ rākṣasānāṃ ca devaiḥ। sa saṅgrāmastārakākhyaḥ sutīvraḥ; yatra skandastārakākhyaṃ jaghāna ॥9-42-40॥

(At the end of which there was a very great battle of the demons, Daityas, and Rakshasas with the gods; that battle named Taraka was very fierce, where Skanda killed Taraka.)
At the end of this great battle between the demons, Daityas, Rakshasas, and the gods, known as the fierce Taraka battle, Skanda killed Taraka.
