ऋषिरासीन्महावीर्यः कुणिर्गार्ग्यो महायशाः। स तप्त्वा विपुलं राजंस्तपो वै तपतां वरः ॥ मानसीं स सुतां सुभ्रूं समुत्पादितवान्विभुः ॥९-५१-३॥
ṛṣirāsīnmahāvīryaḥ kuṇirgārgyo mahāyaśāḥ। sa taptvā vipulaṃ rājaṃstapo vai tapatāṃ varaḥ ॥ mānasīṃ sa sutāṃ subhrūṃ samutpāditavānvibhuḥ ॥9-51-3॥

(The sage of great strength, Kuṇi of the Gārgyas, who was of great fame, having performed great penance, O king, indeed the best of those who perform penance, produced a mental daughter, beautiful-browed, the powerful one.)
The sage Kuṇi of the Gārgyas, known for his great strength and fame, performed intense penance. O king, he was indeed the best among those who perform penance. He mentally created a beautiful-browed daughter, being the powerful one.
तां च दृष्ट्वा भृशं प्रीतः कुणिर्गार्ग्यो महायशाः। जगाम त्रिदिवं राजन्सन्त्यज्येह कलेवरम् ॥९-५१-४॥
tāṃ ca dṛṣṭvā bhṛśaṃ prītaḥ kuṇirgārgyaḥ mahāyaśāḥ। jagāma tridivaṃ rājansantyajyeha kalevaram ॥9-51-4॥

Upon seeing her, Kuṇi Gārgya, who was greatly pleased and renowned, departed to heaven, leaving his mortal body behind, O king.
सुभ्रूः सा ह्यथ कल्याणी पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणा। महता तपसोग्रेण कृत्वाश्रममनिन्दिता ॥९-५१-५॥

(Having beautiful eyebrows, she, indeed then, auspicious, with lotus-like eyes, with great fierce penance, having performed the hermitage, blameless.)

उपवासैः पूजयन्ती पितॄन्देवांश्च सा पुरा। तस्यास्तु तपसोग्रेण महान्कालोऽत्यगान्नृप ॥९-५१-६॥
upavāsaiḥ pūjayantī pitṝndevāṃśca sā purā। tasyāstu tapasogreṇa mahānkālo'tyagānnṛpa ॥9-51-6॥

(With fasts, she worshipped the ancestors and gods formerly. But due to her severe penance, a great time passed, O king.)
She used to worship the ancestors and gods with fasting in the past. However, due to her intense penance, a long time elapsed, O king.
सा पित्रा दीयमानापि भर्त्रे नैच्छदनिन्दिता। आत्मनः सदृशं सा तु भर्तारं नान्वपश्यत ॥९-५१-७॥
sā pitrā dīyamānāpi bhartre naicchadaninditā। ātmanaḥ sadṛśaṃ sā tu bhartāraṃ nānvapaśyata ॥9-51-7॥
[सा (sā) - she; पित्रा (pitrā) - by father; दीयमाना (dīyamānā) - being given; अपि (api) - even; भर्त्रे (bhartre) - to husband; न (na) - not; ऐच्छत् (aicchat) - desired; अनिन्दिता (aninditā) - blameless; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of herself; सदृशं (sadṛśam) - suitable; सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; भर्तारं (bhartāram) - husband; न (na) - not; अन्वपश्यत (anvapaśyata) - found;]
(She, even being given by her father, did not desire a husband, blameless. She did not find a suitable husband for herself.)
She, though being offered by her father, did not wish for a husband, being blameless. However, she did not find a husband who was suitable for her.
ततः सा तपसोग्रेण पीडयित्वात्मनस्तनुम्। पितृदेवार्चनरता बभूव विजने वने ॥९-५१-८॥
tataḥ sā tapasogreṇa pīḍayitvātmanastanum। pitṛdevārcanaratā babhūva vijane vane ॥9-51-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; तपसः (tapasah) - of penance; उग्रेण (ugreṇa) - fierce; पीडयित्वा (pīḍayitvā) - tormenting; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - her own; तनुम् (tanum) - body; पितृदेव (pitṛdeva) - ancestors and gods; अर्चनरता (arcanaratā) - engaged in worship; बभूव (babhūva) - became; विजने (vijane) - in the solitary; वने (vane) - forest;]
(Then she, tormenting her own body with fierce penance, became engaged in worship of ancestors and gods in the solitary forest.)
Then she subjected her body to severe penance and became devoted to the worship of her ancestors and the gods in the lonely forest.
सात्मानं मन्यमानापि कृतकृत्यं श्रमान्विता। वार्द्धकेन च राजेन्द्र तपसा चैव कर्शिता ॥९-५१-९॥
sātmānaṃ manyamānāpi kṛtakṛtyaṃ śramānvitā। vārdḍhena ca rājendra tapasā caiva karśitā ॥9-51-9॥
[सात्मानं (sātmānaṃ) - herself; मन्यमाना (manyamānā) - considering; अपि (api) - even; कृतकृत्यं (kṛtakṛtyaṃ) - accomplished; श्रमान्विता (śramānvitā) - weary; वार्द्धकेन (vārdḍhena) - by old age; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कर्शिता (karśitā) - emaciated;]
(Considering herself accomplished, weary, emaciated by old age and penance, O king.)

सा नाशकद्यदा गन्तुं पदात्पदमपि स्वयम्। चकार गमने बुद्धिं परलोकाय वै तदा ॥९-५१-१०॥
sā nāśakadyadā gantuṃ padātpadamapi svayam। cakāra gamane buddhiṃ paralokāya vai tadā ॥9-51-10॥
[सा (sā) - she; न (na) - not; अशकद् (aśakad) - able; यदा (yadā) - when; गन्तुं (gantuṃ) - to go; पदात् (padāt) - from step; पदम् (padam) - step; अपि (api) - even; स्वयम् (svayam) - herself; चकार (cakāra) - made; गमने (gamane) - in going; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - decision; परलोकाय (paralokāya) - to the other world; वै (vai) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(She, not able to go even step by step herself, made a decision to go to the other world then indeed.)
When she was unable to move even a step by herself, she decided to depart for the other world.
मोक्तुकामां तु तां दृष्ट्वा शरीरं नारदोऽब्रवीत्। असंस्कृतायाः कन्यायाः कुतो लोकास्तवानघे ॥९-५१-११॥
moktukāmāṃ tu tāṃ dṛṣṭvā śarīraṃ nārado'bravīt। asaṃskṛtāyāḥ kanyāyāḥ kuto lokāstavānaghe ॥9-51-11॥
[मोक्तुकामाम् (moktukāmām) - desiring liberation; तु (tu) - but; ताम् (tām) - her; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; असंस्कृतायाः (asaṃskṛtāyāḥ) - unrefined; कन्यायाः (kanyāyāḥ) - of the girl; कुतः (kutaḥ) - where; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; तव (tava) - your; अनघे (anaghe) - O sinless one;]
(Desiring liberation, but having seen her body, Nārada said: "Where are the worlds for your unrefined girl, O sinless one?")
Nārada, upon seeing the body of the girl who desired liberation, said: "O sinless one, where are the worlds for your unrefined daughter?"
एवं हि श्रुतमस्माभिर्देवलोके महाव्रते। तपः परमकं प्राप्तं न तु लोकास्त्वया जिताः ॥९-५१-१२॥
evaṃ hi śrutamasmābhirdevaloke mahāvrate। tapaḥ paramakaṃ prāptaṃ na tu lokāstvayā jitāḥ ॥9-51-12॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; देवलोके (devaloke) - in the world of gods; महाव्रते (mahāvrate) - O great vow; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance; परमकम् (paramakam) - supreme; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - attained; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; जिताः (jitāḥ) - conquered;]
(Thus indeed, it is heard by us, O great vow, that supreme penance is attained in the world of gods, but the worlds are not conquered by you.)

तन्नारदवचः श्रुत्वा साब्रवीदृषिसंसदि। तपसोऽर्धं प्रयच्छामि पाणिग्राहस्य सत्तमाः ॥९-५१-१३॥
tannāradavacaḥ śrutvā sābravīdṛṣisaṁsadi। tapaso'rdhaṁ prayacchāmi pāṇigrāhasya sattamāḥ ॥9-51-13॥
[तत् (tat) - that; नारद (nārada) - Nārada; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सा (sā) - she; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; ऋषि (ṛṣi) - sage; संसदि (saṁsadi) - assembly; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of penance; अर्धं (ardhaṁ) - half; प्रयच्छामि (prayacchāmi) - I give; पाणिग्राहस्य (pāṇigrāhasya) - to the bridegroom; सत्तमाः (sattamāḥ) - O best ones;]
(Having heard those words of Nārada, she said in the assembly of sages, "I give half of my penance to the bridegroom, O best ones.")
Upon hearing Nārada's words, she addressed the assembly of sages, offering half of her penance to the bridegroom, acknowledging the esteemed ones present.
इत्युक्ते चास्या जग्राह पाणिं गालवसम्भवः। ऋषिः प्राक्षृङ्गवान्नाम समयं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥९-५१-१४॥
ityukte cāsyā jagrāha pāṇiṃ gālavasambhavaḥ। ṛṣiḥ prākṣṛṅgavānnāma samayaṃ cedamabravīt ॥9-51-14॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been said; च (ca) - and; अस्या (asyā) - her; जग्राह (jagrāha) - took; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; गालवसम्भवः (gālavasambhavaḥ) - son of Gālava; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; प्राक् (prāk) - before; शृङ्गवान् (śṛṅgavān) - Śṛṅgavān; नाम (nāma) - by name; समयम् (samayam) - time; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Thus having been said, the son of Gālava took her hand. The sage Śṛṅgavān by name said this before the time.)
After these words, the son of Gālava took her hand. The sage named Śṛṅgavān spoke these words before the appointed time.
समयेन तवाद्याहं पाणिं स्प्रक्ष्यामि शोभने। यद्येकरात्रं वस्तव्यं त्वया सह मयेति ह ॥९-५१-१५॥
samayena tavādyāhaṃ pāṇiṃ spraḳṣyāmi śobhane। yadyekarātraṃ vastavyaṃ tvayā saha mayeti ha ॥9-51-15॥
[समयेन (samayena) - by agreement; तव (tava) - your; अद्य (adya) - today; अहम् (aham) - I; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; स्प्रक्ष्यामि (spraḳṣyāmi) - will touch; शोभने (śobhane) - O beautiful one; यदि (yadi) - if; एकरात्रम् (ekarātram) - one night; वस्तव्यम् (vastavyam) - to be stayed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सह (saha) - with; मया (mayā) - me; इति (iti) - thus; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(By agreement, today I will touch your hand, O beautiful one, if one night is to be stayed by you with me, thus indeed.)
"O beautiful one, by agreement, today I shall touch your hand if you agree to stay with me for one night."
तथेति सा प्रतिश्रुत्य तस्मै पाणिं ददौ तदा। चक्रे च पाणिग्रहणं तस्योद्वाहं च गालविः ॥९-५१-१६॥
tatheti sā pratiśrutya tasmai pāṇiṃ dadau tadā। cakre ca pāṇigrahaṇaṃ tasyodvāhaṃ ca gālavaḥ ॥9-51-16॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so; सा (sā) - she; प्रतिश्रुत्य (pratiśrutya) - having promised; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; ददौ (dadau) - gave; तदा (tadā) - then; चक्रे (cakre) - made; च (ca) - and; पाणिग्रहणम् (pāṇigrahaṇam) - marriage; तस्य (tasya) - his; उद्वाहम् (udvāham) - wedding; च (ca) - and; गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava;]
(Thus, she having promised, gave her hand to him then. Gālava made the marriage and his wedding.)

सा रात्रावभवद्राजंस्तरुणी देववर्णिनी। दिव्याभरणवस्त्रा च दिव्यस्रगनुलेपना ॥९-५१-१७॥
sā rātrāv abhavad rājaṃs taruṇī deva-varṇinī। divyābharaṇa-vastrā ca divya-srag-anulepanā ॥9-51-17॥
[सा (sā) - she; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तरुणी (taruṇī) - young woman; देववर्णिनी (deva-varṇinī) - divine in appearance; दिव्याभरणवस्त्रा (divyābharaṇa-vastrā) - wearing divine ornaments and clothes; च (ca) - and; दिव्यस्रगनुलेपना (divya-srag-anulepanā) - adorned with divine garlands and ointments;]
(She became a young woman of divine appearance at night, O king, wearing divine ornaments and clothes, and adorned with divine garlands and ointments.)
At night, she transformed into a young woman of divine beauty, O king, adorned with celestial ornaments, garments, garlands, and ointments.
तां दृष्ट्वा गालविः प्रीतो दीपयन्तीमिवात्मना। उवास च क्षपामेकां प्रभाते साब्रवीच्च तम् ॥९-५१-१८॥
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā gālaviḥ prīto dīpayantīmivātmanā। uvāsa ca kṣapāmekāṃ prabhāte sābravīcca tam ॥9-51-18॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; गालविः (gālaviḥ) - Gālava; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; दीपयन्तीम् (dīpayantīm) - shining; इव (iva) - as if; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by herself; उवास (uvāsa) - stayed; च (ca) - and; क्षपाम् (kṣapām) - night; एकाम् (ekām) - one; प्रभाते (prabhāte) - in the morning; सा (sā) - she; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - to him;]
(Having seen her, Gālava, pleased, stayed for one night as if she was shining by herself, and in the morning she said to him.)
Gālava, upon seeing her, was pleased and stayed for the night, as she seemed to shine by herself. In the morning, she spoke to him.
यस्त्वया समयो विप्र कृतो मे तपतां वर। तेनोषितास्मि भद्रं ते स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु व्रजाम्यहम् ॥९-५१-१९॥
yastvayā samayo vipra kṛto me tapatāṃ vara। tenoṣitāsmi bhadraṃ te svasti te'stu vrajāmyaham ॥9-51-19॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; समयः (samayaḥ) - agreement; विप्र (vipra) - O wise one; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; मे (me) - my; तपताम् (tapatām) - of the ascetics; वर (vara) - best; तेन (tena) - by that; उषिता (uṣitā) - stayed; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भद्रं (bhadram) - blessed; ते (te) - to you; स्वस्ति (svasti) - farewell; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - be; व्रजामि (vrajāmi) - I go; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(The agreement made by you, O wise one, for me, the best of ascetics, by that I have stayed. Blessed be you, farewell to you, I go.)
O wise one, the agreement you made for me, the best among ascetics, has been fulfilled. May you be blessed, farewell, I am leaving.
सानुज्ञाताब्रवीद्भूयो योऽस्मिंस्तीर्थे समाहितः। वत्स्यते रजनीमेकां तर्पयित्वा दिवौकसः ॥९-५१-२०॥
sānujñātābravīdbhūyo yo'smiṁstīrthe samāhitaḥ। vatsyate rajanīmekāṁ tarpayitvā divaukasaḥ ॥9-51-20॥
[सानुज्ञात (sānujñāta) - having been permitted; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; यः (yaḥ) - who; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - holy place; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - concentrated; वत्स्यते (vatsyate) - will stay; रजनीम् (rajanīm) - night; एकाम् (ekām) - one; तर्पयित्वा (tarpayitvā) - having satisfied; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the gods;]
(Having been permitted, he said again: "He who is concentrated in this holy place will stay for one night, having satisfied the gods.")
Having been granted permission, he spoke again: "The one who is focused in this sacred place will remain for one night after offering satisfaction to the gods."
चत्वारिंशतमष्टौ च द्वे चाष्टौ सम्यगाचरेत्। यो ब्रह्मचर्यं वर्षाणि फलं तस्य लभेत सः ॥ एवमुक्त्वा ततः साध्वी देहं त्यक्त्वा दिवं गता ॥९-५१-२१॥
catvāriṁśatamaṣṭau ca dve cāṣṭau samyagācaret। yo brahmacaryaṁ varṣāṇi phalaṁ tasya labheta saḥ ॥ evamuktvā tataḥ sādhvī dehaṁ tyaktvā divaṁ gatā ॥9-51-21॥
