yatrejivānuḍupatī rājasūyena bhārata। tasminvṛtte mahānāsītsaṅgrāmastārakāmayaḥ ॥9-50-1॥

As he was making offerings to the gods in the Sarasvati river, a noble lady approached him, O great king.
तां दिव्यवपुषं दृष्ट्वा तस्यर्षेर्भावितात्मनः। रेतः स्कन्नं सरस्वत्यां तत्सा जग्राह निम्नगा ॥९-५०-९॥
tāṁ divyavapuṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā tasyarṣerbhāvitātmanaḥ। retaḥ skannaṁ sarasvatyāṁ tatsā jagrāha nimnagā ॥9-50-9॥

(Having seen that divine form, the semen of the contemplative sage fell in Sarasvati, and she, the river, took it.)

कुक्षौ चाप्यदधद्दृष्ट्वा तद्रेतः पुरुषर्षभ। सा दधार च तं गर्भं पुत्रहेतोर्महानदी ॥९-५०-१०॥
kukṣau cāpyadadhad dṛṣṭvā tad retaḥ puruṣarṣabha। sā dadhāra ca taṃ garbhaṃ putrahetor mahānadī ॥9-50-10॥

ऋषिसंसदि तं दृष्ट्वा सा नदी मुनिसत्तमम्। ततः प्रोवाच राजेन्द्र ददती पुत्रमस्य तम् ॥ ब्रह्मर्षे तव पुत्रोऽयं त्वद्भक्त्या धारितो मया ॥९-५०-१२॥

न विनाशमिदं गच्छेत्त्वत्तेज इति निश्चयात्। प्रतिगृह्णीष्व पुत्रं स्वं मया दत्तमनिन्दितम् ॥९-५०-१४॥
na vināśamidaṃ gacchettvatteja iti niścayāt। pratigṛhṇīṣva putraṃ svaṃ mayā dattamaninditam ॥9-50-14॥

(Thus spoken, he accepted and obtained excellent affection. Like a mantra, the best of the twice-born smelled him on the head with love.)

परिष्वज्य चिरं कालं तदा भरतसत्तम। सरस्वत्यै वरं प्रादात्प्रीयमाणो महामुनिः ॥९-५०-१६॥
pariṣvajya ciraṃ kālaṃ tadā bharatasattama। sarasvatyai varaṃ prādātprīyamāṇo mahāmuniḥ ॥9-50-16॥

एष द्वादशवार्षिक्यामनावृष्ट्यां द्विजर्षभान्। सारस्वतो महाभागे वेदानध्यापयिष्यति ॥९-५०-२२॥
eṣa dvādaśavārṣikyāmanāvṛṣṭyāṃ dvijarṣabhān। sārasvato mahābhāge vedānadhyāpayiṣyati ॥9-50-22॥

(This Sarasvata, O fortunate one, will teach the Vedas to the best of the twice-born during the twelve-year drought.)
During a twelve-year drought, this fortunate Sarasvata will impart the knowledge of the Vedas to the most distinguished of the twice-born.
पुण्याभ्यश्च सरिद्भ्यस्त्वं सदा पुण्यतमा शुभे। भविष्यसि महाभागे मत्प्रसादात्सरस्वति ॥९-५०-२३॥
puṇyābhyaśca saridbhyastvaṃ sadā puṇyatamā śubhe। bhaviṣyasi mahābhāge matprasādātsarasvati ॥9-50-23॥

(To the virtuous and to the rivers, you, O auspicious one, will always become the most virtuous, O fortunate one, by my grace, Sarasvati.)

एवं सा संस्तुता तेन वरं लब्ध्वा महानदी। पुत्रमादाय मुदिता जगाम भरतर्षभ ॥९-५०-२४॥
evaṃ sā sanstutā tena varaṃ labdhvā mahānadī। putramādāya muditā jagāma bharatarṣabha ॥9-50-24॥

एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु विरोधे देवदानवैः। शक्रः प्रहरणान्वेषी लोकांस्त्रीन्विचचार ह ॥९-५०-२५॥
etasmínneva kāle tu virodhe devadānavaiḥ। śakraḥ praharaṇānveṣī lokāṁstrīnvicacāra ha ॥9-50-25॥

न चोपलेभे भगवाञ्शक्रः प्रहरणं तदा। यद्वै तेषां भवेद्योग्यं वधाय विबुधद्विषाम् ॥९-५०-२६॥
na copalebhe bhagavāñśakraḥ praharaṇaṃ tadā। yadvai teṣāṃ bhavedyogyaṃ vadhāya vibudhādviṣām ॥9-50-26॥

(And the blessed Indra did not obtain a weapon then, which indeed would be suitable for the killing of the enemies of the gods.)

ततोऽब्रवीत्सुराञ्शक्रो न मे शक्या महासुराः। ऋतेऽस्थिभिर्दधीचस्य निहन्तुं त्रिदशद्विषः ॥९-५०-२७॥
tato'bravītsurāñśakro na me śakyā mahāsurāḥ। ṛte'sthibhirdadhīcasya nihantuṃ tridaśadviṣaḥ ॥9-50-27॥

(Then Indra said to the gods, "The great demons cannot be defeated by me without the bones of Dadhīca to kill the enemies of the gods.")

(Therefore, having gone, the best sage should be requested, O best among gods: "Give the bones of Dadhicha; thus, by them, we will kill the enemies.")
Therefore, O best among gods, go and request the best sage to give the bones of Dadhicha, so that we can use them to kill our enemies.
स देवैर्याचितोऽस्थीनि यत्नादृषिवरस्तदा। प्राणत्यागं कुरुष्वेति चकारैवाविचारयन् ॥ स लोकानक्षयान्प्राप्तो देवप्रियकरस्तदा ॥९-५०-२९॥

(He, requested by the gods for the bones, then the best of sages, without hesitation, did indeed abandon life. He then attained the imperishable worlds, pleasing to the gods.)

तस्यास्थिभिरथो शक्रः सम्प्रहृष्टमनास्तदा। कारयामास दिव्यानि नानाप्रहरणान्युत ॥ वज्राणि चक्राणि गदा गुरुदण्डांश्च पुष्कलान् ॥९-५०-३०॥
tasyāsthibhiratho śakraḥ samprahṛṣṭamanāstadā। kārayāmāsa divyāni nānāpraharaṇānyuta ॥ vajrāṇi cakrāṇi gadā gurudaṇḍāṃśca puṣkalān ॥9-50-30॥

(Then, with his bones, Indra, with a delighted mind, made divine and various weapons, thunderbolts, discus, maces, heavy staffs, and abundant (weapons).)

स हि तीव्रेण तपसा सम्भृतः परमर्षिणा। प्रजापतिसुतेनाथ भृगुणा लोकभावनः ॥९-५०-३१॥

(He, indeed, nurtured by intense penance by the great sage, by the son of Prajapati, and by Bhrigu, is the creator of the worlds.)

(Gigantic-bodied, he, radiant, created from the essence of the world, was born as a mountain-like teacher, tall, renowned by greatness, lord. Always trembles by his radiance, Indra.)

(By that thunderbolt, endowed with mantras, O Bharata, intensely released in anger and born of Brahma's energy, the Lord slew ninety-nine mighty Daityas and Danavas.)
With that mantra-endowed thunderbolt, O Bharata, the Lord, filled with intense anger and the energy of Brahma, slew ninety-nine of the mighty Daityas and Danavas.
अथ काले व्यतिक्रान्ते महत्यतिभयङ्करे। अनावृष्टिरनुप्राप्ता राजन्द्वादशवार्षिकी ॥९-५०-३४॥
atha kāle vyatikrānte mahatyatibhayaṅkare। anāvṛṣṭiranuprāptā rājandvādaśavārṣikī ॥9-50-34॥
[अथ (atha) - then; काले (kāle) - time; व्यतिक्रान्ते (vyatikrānte) - elapsed; महति (mahati) - great; अतिभयङ्करे (atibhayaṅkare) - very terrifying; अनावृष्टिः (anāvṛṣṭiḥ) - drought; अनुप्राप्ता (anuprāptā) - occurred; राजन् (rājan) - O king; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; वार्षिकी (vārṣikī) - years;]
(Then, after a great and very terrifying time had elapsed, a twelve-year drought occurred, O king.)

(In that twelve-year drought, the great sages, afflicted by hunger, ran in all directions for livelihood, O king.)
During that twelve-year period of drought, the great sages, suffering from hunger, scattered in all directions in search of sustenance, O king.
दिग्भ्यस्तान्प्रद्रुतान्दृष्ट्वा मुनिः सारस्वतस्तदा। गमनाय मतिं चक्रे तं प्रोवाच सरस्वती ॥९-५०-३६॥
digbhyastānpradrutāndṛṣṭvā muniḥ sārasvatastadā। gamanāya matiṁ cakre taṁ provāca sarasvatī ॥9-50-36॥
[दिग्भ्यः (digbhyaḥ) - from directions; तान् (tān) - them; प्रद्रुतान् (pradrutān) - fleeing; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; सारस्वतः (sārasvataḥ) - Sarasvata; तदा (tadā) - then; गमनाय (gamanāya) - for departure; मतिं (matiṁ) - mind; चक्रे (cakre) - made; तम् (tam) - him; प्रोवाच (provāca) - addressed; सरस्वती (sarasvatī) - Sarasvati;]
(Having seen them fleeing from directions, the sage Sarasvata then made up his mind for departure; Sarasvati addressed him.)

न गन्तव्यमितः पुत्र तवाहारमहं सदा। दास्यामि मत्स्यप्रवरानुष्यतामिह भारत ॥९-५०-३७॥
na gantavyamitaḥ putra tavāhāramahaṃ sadā। dāsyāmi matsyapravarānuṣyatāmiha bhārata ॥9-50-37॥
[न (na) - not; गन्तव्यम् (gantavyam) - to be gone; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; पुत्र (putra) - son; तव (tava) - your; आहारम् (āhāram) - food; अहम् (aham) - I; सदा (sadā) - always; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - will give; मत्स्यप्रवरान् (matsyapravarān) - excellent fish; उष्यताम् (uṣyatām) - stay; इह (iha) - here; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Do not go from here, son. I will always give you your food. Stay here with excellent fish, O Bhārata.)
"Do not leave this place, my son. I will always provide you with the best fish to eat. Stay here, O Bhārata."
इत्युक्तस्तर्पयामास स पितॄन्देवतास्तथा। आहारमकरोन्नित्यं प्राणान्वेदांश्च धारयन् ॥९-५०-३८॥
ityuktastarpayāmāsa sa pitṝndevatāstathā। āhāramakaronnityaṃ prāṇānvedāṃśca dhārayan ॥9-50-38॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been told; तर्पयामास (tarpayāmāsa) - satisfied; सः (saḥ) - he; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; देवताः (devatāḥ) - gods; तथा (tathā) - also; आहारम् (āhāram) - food; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - daily; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life forces; वेदान् (vedān) - Vedas; च (ca) - and; धारयन् (dhārayan) - sustaining;]
(Thus, having been told, he satisfied the ancestors and the gods. He made food daily, sustaining life forces and the Vedas.)
Thus instructed, he offered satisfaction to the ancestors and gods. He prepared food daily, maintaining his life forces and the teachings of the Vedas.
अथ तस्यामतीतायामनावृष्ट्यां महर्षयः। अन्योन्यं परिपप्रच्छुः पुनः स्वाध्यायकारणात् ॥९-५०-३९॥
atha tasyām atītāyām anāvṛṣṭyām maharṣayaḥ। anyonyaṃ paripapracchuḥ punaḥ svādhyāyakāraṇāt ॥9-50-39॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तस्याम् (tasyām) - in that; अतीतायाम् (atītāyām) - past; अनावृष्ट्याम् (anāvṛṣṭyām) - drought; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyaṃ) - each other; परिपप्रच्छुः (paripapracchuḥ) - asked; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; स्वाध्याय (svādhyāya) - self-study; कारणात् (kāraṇāt) - for the reason;]
(Then, in that past drought, the great sages asked each other again for the reason of self-study.)

तेषां क्षुधापरीतानां नष्टा वेदा विधावताम्। सर्वेषामेव राजेन्द्र न कश्चित्प्रतिभानवान् ॥९-५०-४०॥
teṣāṃ kṣudhāparītānāṃ naṣṭā vedā vidhāvatām। sarveṣāmeva rājendra na kaścitpratibhānavān ॥9-50-40॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; क्षुधा (kṣudhā) - by hunger; परतानाम् (parītānām) - overcome; नष्टा (naṣṭā) - lost; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - knowledge; विधावताम् (vidhāvatām) - of those running; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; एव (eva) - indeed; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; न (na) - not; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; प्रतिभानवान् (pratibhānavān) - intelligent;]
(Of them, overcome by hunger, the knowledge of those running is lost. Indeed, O king, of all, not anyone is intelligent.)
"O King, among all those who are overcome by hunger, the knowledge is lost, and none is intelligent."
अथ कश्चिदृषिस्तेषां सारस्वतमुपेयिवान्। कुर्वाणं संशितात्मानं स्वाध्यायमृषिसत्तमम् ॥९-५०-४१॥
atha kaścidṛṣisteṣāṃ sārasvatamupeyivān। kurvāṇaṃ saṃśitātmānaṃ svādhyāyamṛṣisattamam ॥9-50-41॥
[अथ (atha) - then; कश्चित् (kaścit) - a certain; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; तेषाम् (teṣām) - among them; सारस्वतम् (sārasvatam) - Sarasvata; उपेयिवान् (upeyivān) - approached; कुर्वाणम् (kurvāṇam) - engaged in; संशितात्मानम् (saṃśitātmānam) - with a resolute mind; स्वाध्यायम् (svādhyāyam) - self-study; ऋषिसत्तमम् (ṛṣisattamam) - best of sages;]
(Then a certain sage among them, Sarasvata, approached, engaged in self-study with a resolute mind, the best of sages.)

स गत्वाचष्ट तेभ्यश्च सारस्वतमतिप्रभम्। स्वाध्यायममरप्रख्यं कुर्वाणं विजने जने ॥९-५०-४२॥
sa gatvācaṣṭa tebhyaśca sārasvatamati-prabham। svādhyāyam amara-prakhyaṃ kurvāṇaṃ vijane jane ॥9-50-42॥

(Not by years, not by gray hairs, not by wealth, not by relatives did the sages make dharma; he who is learned is our great one.)
Dharma is not established by age, gray hair, wealth, or relatives; it is the learned one who is truly great among us.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य मुनयस्ते विधानतः। तस्माद्वेदाननुप्राप्य पुनर्धर्मं प्रचक्रिरे ॥९-५०-४८॥
etacchrutvā vacastasya munayaste vidhānataḥ। tasmādvedānanuprāpya punardharmaṃ pracakrire ॥9-50-48॥

(Having heard these words of his, the sages, according to the rules, having obtained the Vedas, again initiated dharma.)
