Pancharatra: Krishna tells Yudhisthira, Ashwatthama is restless and has Brahmashira weapon, and so, Bhima should be protected.

tasmin prayāte durdharṣe yadūnām ṛṣabhas tataḥ। abravīt puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ kuntī-putraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥10-12-1॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; प्रयाते (prayāte) - having departed; दुर्धर्षे (durdharṣe) - Durdharsha; यदूनाम् (yadūnām) - of the Yadus; ऋषभः (ṛṣabhaḥ) - the bull; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पुण्डरीकाक्षः (puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ) - the lotus-eyed one; कुन्तीपुत्रम् (kuntī-putram) - Kunti's son; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira;]
(In that (situation), after Durdharsha, the bull among the Yadus, had departed, then the lotus-eyed one said to Kunti's son, Yudhishthira.)
After Durdharsha, the foremost among the Yadus, had departed, the lotus-eyed Krishna spoke to Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti.
एष पाण्डव ते भ्राता पुत्रशोकमपारयन्। जिघांसुर्द्रौणिमाक्रन्दे याति भारत भारतः ॥१०-१२-२॥

(Bhima is dear to you, to all the brothers, O bull of the Bharatas. Him, afflicted today, you why do not approach?)

यत्तदाचष्ट पुत्राय द्रोणः परपुरञ्जयः। अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरो नाम दहेद्यत्पृथिवीमपि ॥१०-१२-४॥

viditaṃ cāpalaṃ hyāsīd ātmajasya mahātmanaḥ। sarvadharmavidācāryo nānviṣat satataṃ sutam ॥10-12-7॥

(The restlessness of the son of the great-souled one was indeed known; the teacher, knower of all dharmas, did not always seek the son.)
It was well known that the son of the great-souled man was restless; the teacher, who knew all dharmas, did not constantly look for the boy.
परमापद्गतेनापि न स्म तात त्वया रणे। इदमस्त्रं प्रयोक्तव्यं मानुषेषु विशेषतः ॥१०-१२-८॥
paramāpad-gatenāpi na sma tāta tvayā raṇe। idam astraṃ prayoktavyaṃ mānuṣeṣu viśeṣataḥ ॥10-12-8॥
[परमापद्गतेनापि (paramāpad-gatena api) - even by one who has reached extreme danger; न (na) - not; स्म (sma) - indeed; तात (tāta) - O dear one; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; इदम् (idam) - this; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; प्रयोक्तव्यम् (prayoktavyam) - should be used; मानुषेषु (mānuṣeṣu) - among humans; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(Even by one who has reached extreme danger, O dear one, this weapon should not indeed be used by you in battle, especially among humans.)
O dear one, even if you are in the greatest danger, you must never use this weapon in battle, especially against humans.
इत्युक्तवान्गुरुः पुत्रं द्रोणः पश्चादथोक्तवान्। न त्वं जातु सतां मार्गे स्थातेति पुरुषर्षभ ॥१०-१२-९॥
ity-uktavān guruḥ putraṃ droṇaḥ paścād athoktavān। na tvaṃ jātu satāṃ mārge sthāte ti puruṣarṣabha ॥10-12-9॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - having spoken; गुरुः (guruḥ) - the teacher; पुत्रम् (putram) - to the son; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; अथ (atha) - then; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - spoke; न (na) - not; त्वम् (tvam) - you; जातु (jātu) - ever; सताम् (satām) - of the virtuous; मार्गे (mārge) - on the path; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to stand; इति (iti) - thus; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men;]
(Thus having spoken, the teacher Droṇa afterwards then spoke to his son: 'You will never stand on the path of the virtuous, O best of men.')
After saying this, the teacher Droṇa then addressed his son again: 'You will never follow the path of the virtuous, O best of men.'
स तदाज्ञाय दुष्टात्मा पितुर्वचनमप्रियम्। निराशः सर्वकल्याणैः शोचन्पर्यपतन्महीम् ॥१०-१२-१०॥
sa tadājñāya duṣṭātmā pitur vacanam apriyam। nirāśaḥ sarvakalyāṇaiḥ śocan paryapatan mahīm ॥10-12-10॥
[स (sa) - he; तत् (tat) - that; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - wicked-minded; पितुः (pituḥ) - of (his) father; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अप्रियम् (apriyam) - unpleasant; निराशः (nirāśaḥ) - devoid of hope; सर्वकल्याणैः (sarvakalyāṇaiḥ) - of all auspicious things; शोचन् (śocan) - grieving; पर्यपतत् (paryapatan) - falling down; महीम् (mahīm) - on the ground;]
(He, having understood that unpleasant words of his father, the wicked-minded, devoid of all auspicious hopes, grieving, fell down on the ground.)
He, realizing the unpleasant words of his father, the wicked-minded one, lost all hope for happiness and, grieving, collapsed to the ground.
ततस्तदा कुरुश्रेष्ठ वनस्थे त्वयि भारत। अवसद्द्वारकामेत्य वृष्णिभिः परमार्चितः ॥१०-१२-११॥
tatas tadā kuruśreṣṭha vanasthe tvayi bhārata। avasad dvārakām etya vṛṣṇibhiḥ paramārcitaḥ ॥10-12-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तदा (tadā) - at that time; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; वनस्थे (vanasthe) - when (you were) dwelling in the forest; त्वयि (tvayi) - you; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; अवसत् (avasat) - he dwelt; द्वारकाम् (dvārakām) - in Dvārakā; एत्य (etya) - having gone; वृष्णिभिः (vṛṣṇibhiḥ) - by the Vṛṣṇis; परमार्चितः (paramārcitaḥ) - greatly honored;]
(Then at that time, O best of the Kurus, when you were dwelling in the forest, O descendant of Bharata, he dwelt in Dvārakā, having gone there, greatly honored by the Vṛṣṇis.)

स कदाचित्समुद्रान्ते वसन्द्रारवतीमनु। एक एकं समागम्य मामुवाच हसन्निव ॥१०-१२-१२॥
sa kadācitsamudrānte vasandrāravatīmanu। eka ekaṃ samāgamya māmuvāca hasanniva ॥10-12-12॥
[स (sa) - he; कदाचित् (kadācit) - once; समुद्र-अन्ते (samudra-ante) - at the edge of the ocean; वसन् (vasan) - dwelling; द्रारवतीम्-अनु (drāravatīm-anu) - along Draravati (river); एक एकं (eka ekaṃ) - one by one; समागम्य (samāgamya) - approaching; माम् (mām) - me; उवाच (uvāca) - said; हसन्-इव (hasan-iva) - as if smiling;]
(He, once, at the edge of the ocean, dwelling along Draravati, approaching one by one, said to me as if smiling.)

यत्तदुग्रं तपः कृष्ण चरन्सत्यपराक्रमः। अगस्त्याद्भारताचार्यः प्रत्यपद्यत मे पिता ॥१०-१२-१३॥
yattadugraṃ tapaḥ kṛṣṇa caransatyaparākramaḥ। agastyādbhāratācāryaḥ pratyapadyata me pitā ॥10-12-13॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तद् (tad) - that; उग्रं (ugram) - severe; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Krishna; चरन् (caran) - practicing; सत्यपराक्रमः (satyaparākramaḥ) - one whose valor is truth; अगस्त्यात् (agastyāt) - from Agastya; भारताचार्यः (bhāratācāryaḥ) - the teacher of the Bharatas; प्रत्यपद्यत (pratyapadyata) - obtained; मे (me) - my; पिता (pitā) - father;]
(Which that severe austerity, O Krishna, practicing, one whose valor is truth, from Agastya, the teacher of the Bharatas, obtained my father.)

अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरो नाम देवगन्धर्वपूजितम्। तदद्य मयि दाशार्ह यथा पितरि मे तथा ॥१०-१२-१४॥

(The weapon named Brahmashira, worshipped by gods and gandharvas, that today by me, O Dasharha, just as by my father, so by me.)

अस्मत्तस्तदुपादाय दिव्यमस्त्रं यदूत्तम। ममाप्यस्त्रं प्रयच्छ त्वं चक्रं रिपुहरं रणे ॥१०-१२-१५॥
asmattas tad upādāya divyam astraṃ yadūttama। mamāpy astraṃ prayaccha tvaṃ cakraṃ ripuharaṃ raṇe ॥10-12-15॥
[अस्मत्तः (asmattaḥ) - from me; तत् (tat) - that; उपादाय (upādāya) - having taken; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अस्त्रं (astram) - weapon; यदूत्तम (yadūttama) - O best of the Yadus; मम (mama) - my; अपि (api) - also; अस्त्रं (astram) - weapon; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - grant; त्वं (tvam) - you; चक्रं (cakram) - discus; रिपुहरं (ripuharam) - destroyer of enemies; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Having taken that divine weapon from me, O best of the Yadus, grant me also your weapon, the discus, destroyer of enemies, in battle.)

(He, O king, addressed also by me with affection, with joined palms, begging earnestly, from me (asked for) the weapon, O best of the Bharatas.)

(This bow, this spear, this discus, this mace. Whatever weapon you desire, if (you desire), from me, that (each), I give to you.)

यच्छक्नोषि समुद्यन्तुं प्रयोक्तुमपि वा रणे। तद्गृहाण विनास्त्रेण यन्मे दातुमभीप्ससि ॥१०-१२-१९॥

(He, with a good navel (hub), with a thousand spokes, with a thunderbolt hub, iron-rimmed, chose the discus, O mighty-armed, competing together with me.)

(Take the discus—thus was said by me, but immediately after that, he took, approaching suddenly, the discus with the left hand. And, O Acyuta, he was not able to move this from its place.)
I told him, 'Take the discus.' But right after that, he quickly approached and seized the discus with his left hand. Yet, O Acyuta, he could not move it from its place.
अथ तद्दक्षिणेनापि ग्रहीतुमुपचक्रमे। सर्वयत्नेन तेनापि गृह्णन्नेतदकल्पयत् ॥१०-१२-२२॥
atha tad dakṣiṇena api grahītum upacakrame। sarva-yatnena tena api gṛhṇan etad akalpayat ॥10-12-22॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तत् (tat) - that; दक्षिणेन (dakṣiṇena) - with the right (hand); अपि (api) - also; ग्रहीतुम् (grahītum) - to seize; उपचक्रमे (upacakrame) - he began; सर्वयत्नेन (sarva-yatnena) - with all effort; तेन (tena) - by him; अपि (api) - also; गृह्णन् (gṛhṇan) - seizing; एतत् (etat) - this; अकल्पयत् (akalpayat) - he could not accomplish;]
(Then, he also began to seize that with the right (hand). Even with all effort, he, seizing this, could not accomplish it.)
Then he tried to grasp it with his right hand as well, but despite all his efforts, he could not succeed in holding it.
ततः सर्वबलेनापि यच्चैतन्न शशाक सः। उद्धर्तुं वा चालयितुं द्रौणिः परमदुर्मनाः ॥ कृत्वा यत्नं परं श्रान्तः स न्यवर्तत भारत ॥१०-१२-२३॥
tataḥ sarvabalenāpi yaccaitanna śaśāka saḥ। uddhartuṃ vā cālayituṃ drauṇiḥ paramadurmanāḥ ॥ kṛtvā yatnaṃ paraṃ śrāntaḥ sa nyavartata bhārata ॥10-12-23॥

(Then, even with all his strength, he was not able to lift or move this; the son of Drona, extremely dejected, having made supreme effort, exhausted, he turned back, O Bhārata.)
Then, O Bhārata, Drona's son, despite all his strength, could not lift or move it; after making every effort and becoming exhausted and deeply dejected, he turned back.
निवृत्तमथ तं तस्मादभिप्रायाद्विचेतसम्। अहमामन्त्र्य सुस्निग्धमश्वत्थामानमब्रुवम् ॥१०-१२-२४॥
nivṛttam atha taṃ tasmād abhiprāyād vicetasam। aham āmantrya susnigdham aśvatthāmānam abruvam ॥10-12-24॥

(He who, among gods and men, has attained the supreme standard—the wielder of the Gandiva bow, whose horses are white, whose banner bears the foremost monkey (Hanuman).)

यः साक्षाद्देवदेवेशं शितिकण्ठमुमापतिम्। द्वंद्वयुद्धे पराजिष्णुस्तोषयामास शङ्करम् ॥१०-१२-२६॥
yaḥ sākṣād devadeveśaṃ śitikaṇṭha umāpatim। dvandvayuddhe parājiṣṇuḥ toṣayāmāsa śaṅkaram ॥10-12-26॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; देवदेवेशम् (devadeveśam) - the Lord of lords of the gods; शितिकण्ठम् (śitikaṇṭham) - the blue-throated one; उमापतिम् (umāpatim) - the husband of Umā; द्वंद्वयुद्धे (dvandvayuddhe) - in the duel; पराजिष्णुः (parājiṣṇuḥ) - the one who was defeated; तोषयामास (toṣayāmāsa) - pleased; शङ्करम् (śaṅkaram) - Śaṅkara (Shiva);]
(Who, directly, the Lord of lords of the gods, the blue-throated one, the husband of Umā, in the duel, the one who was defeated, pleased Śaṅkara (Shiva).)

(Than whom there is no one dearer to me, no other man on earth; to whom nothing of mine, not even wives or sons, is not to be given.)

तेनापि सुहृदा ब्रह्मन्पार्थेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा। नोक्तपुर्वमिदं वाक्यं यत्त्वं मामभिभाषसे ॥१०-१२-२८॥

(By him also, by the friend, O Brahman, by Pārtha whose actions are unwearied, this statement, which was not previously spoken, you address to me.)
O Brahman, even by that friend, Arjuna, whose actions are tireless, you now address to me this statement which was never spoken before.
ब्रह्मचर्यं महद्घोरं चीर्त्वा द्वादशवार्षिकम्। हिमवत्पार्श्वमभ्येत्य यो मया तपसार्चितः ॥१०-१२-२९॥
brahmacaryaṃ mahadghoraṃ cīrtvā dvādaśavārṣikam। himavatpārśvamabhyetya yo mayā tapasārcitaḥ ॥10-12-29॥
[ब्रह्मचर्यं (brahmacaryaṃ) - celibacy; महत् (mahat) - great; घोरं (ghoraṃ) - severe; चीर्त्वा (cīrtvā) - having practiced; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; वार्षिकम् (vārṣikam) - years; हिमवत् (himavat) - Himalaya; पार्श्वम् (pārśvam) - side; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; यः (yaḥ) - who; मया (mayā) - by me; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; अर्चितः (arcitaḥ) - worshipped;]
(Having practiced severe and great celibacy for twelve years, having approached the side of the Himalaya, who was worshipped by me with austerity.)
Having practiced intense celibacy for twelve years and having come to the side of the Himalayas, he whom I worshipped with austerities.
समानव्रतचारिण्यां रुक्मिण्यां योऽन्वजायत। सनत्कुमारस्तेजस्वी प्रद्युम्नो नाम मे सुतः ॥१०-१२-३०॥
samānavratacāriṇyāṃ rukmiṇyāṃ yo'nvajāyata. sanatkumārastejasvī pradyumno nāma me sutaḥ ॥10-12-30॥
[समान-व्रत-चारिण्यां (samāna-vrata-cāriṇyāṃ) - in the one who follows the same vows; रुक्मिण्यां (rukmiṇyāṃ) - in Rukmini; यः (yaḥ) - who; अन्वजायत (anvajāyata) - was born; सनत्कुमारः (sanatkumāraḥ) - Sanatkumara; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - brilliant; प्रद्युम्नः (pradyumnaḥ) - Pradyumna; नाम (nāma) - by name; मे (me) - my; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son;]
(In Rukmini, who follows the same vows, he who was born—Sanatkumara, brilliant, Pradyumna by name, my son.)
My son Pradyumna, also known as Sanatkumara, the brilliant one, was born to Rukmini, who followed the same vows.
तेनाप्येतन्महद्दिव्यं चक्रमप्रतिमं मम। न प्रार्थितमभून्मूढ यदिदं प्रार्थितं त्वया ॥१०-१२-३१॥
tenāpy etan mahad divyaṃ cakram apratimaṃ mama। na prārthitam abhūn mūḍha yad idaṃ prārthitaṃ tvayā॥10-12-31॥
[तेनापि (tenāpi) - by him also; एतत् (etat) - this; महत् (mahat) - great; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; चक्रम् (cakram) - discus; अप्रतिमम् (apratimam) - unparalleled; मम (mama) - my; न (na) - not; प्रार्थितम् (prārthitam) - requested; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; मूढ (mūḍha) - O fool; यत् (yat) - which; इदम् (idam) - this; प्रार्थितम् (prārthitam) - requested; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(By him also, this great divine discus, unparalleled, of mine, was not requested, O fool, which this (discus) has been requested by you.)
O fool, even he did not ask for this great, divine, unparalleled discus of mine, which you have now requested.
रामेणातिबलेनैतन्नोक्तपूर्वं कदाचन। न गदेन न साम्बेन यदिदं प्रार्थितं त्वया ॥१०-१२-३२॥
rāmeṇātibalenaitannoktapūrvaṃ kadācana। na gadena na sāmbena yadidaṃ prārthitaṃ tvayā ॥10-12-32॥
[रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; अतिबलेन (atibalena) - by Atibala (the very strong one); एतत् (etat) - this; न (na) - not; उक्तपूर्वं (ukta-pūrvaṃ) - spoken before; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever; न (na) - not; गदेन (gadena) - by Gada; न (na) - not; साम्बेन (sāmbena) - by Sāmba; यद् (yad) - which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; प्रार्थितं (prārthitaṃ) - requested; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]

Neither Rāma nor Atibala, nor Gada nor Sāmba, has ever spoken or requested this before, as you have now done.
द्वारकावासिभिश्चान्यैर्वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथैः। नोक्तपूर्वमिदं जातु यदिदं प्रार्थितं त्वया ॥१०-१२-३३॥
dvārakāvāsibhiścānyairvṛṣṇyandhakamahārathaiḥ। noktapūrvamidaṃ jātu yadidaṃ prārthitaṃ tvayā ॥10-12-33॥
[द्वारका-वासिभिः (dvārakā-vāsibhiḥ) - by the residents of Dvārakā; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; वृष्णि-अन्धक-महारथैः (vṛṣṇi-andhaka-mahārathaiḥ) - by the great warriors of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; न (na) - not; उक्त-पूर्वम् (ukta-pūrvam) - spoken before; इदं (idaṃ) - this; जातु (jātu) - ever; यत् (yat) - which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; प्रार्थितं (prārthitam) - requested; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]

ततस्ते प्रार्थितं चक्रं देवदानवपूजितम्। अजेयः स्यामिति विभो सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥१०-१२-३६॥
tatas te prārthitaṃ cakraṃ devadānavapūjitam। ajeyaḥ syāmiti vibho satyam etad bravīmi te ॥10-12-36॥

(Then to you, the requested discus worshipped by gods and demons; (you said) "May I be invincible" thus, O Lord; truly, this I say to you.)
Then I gave you the discus, worshipped by gods and demons, as you requested. You said, "May I be invincible," O Lord; truly, I say this to you.
त्वत्तोऽहं दुर्लभं काममनवाप्यैव केशव। प्रतियास्यामि गोविन्द शिवेनाभिवदस्व माम् ॥१०-१२-३७॥
tvatto'haṃ durlabhaṃ kāmamanavāpyaiva keśava। pratiyāsyāmi govinda śivenābhivadasva mām ॥10-12-37॥
[त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; अहम् (aham) - I; दुर्लभम् (durlabham) - difficult to obtain; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; अनवाप्य (anavāpya) - not having obtained; एव (eva) - indeed; केशव (keśava) - O Keśava; प्रतियास्यामि (pratiyāsyāmi) - I shall return; गोविन्द (govinda) - O Govinda; शिवेन (śivena) - with auspiciousness; अभिवदस्व (abhivadasva) - greet; माम् (mām) - me;]
(O Keśava, not having obtained the difficult-to-attain desire from you, I shall return, O Govinda; greet me with auspiciousness.)
O Keśava, since I have not obtained my difficult wish from you, I will now return, O Govinda; please bid me farewell with auspiciousness.
एतत्सुनाभं वृष्णीनामृषभेण त्वया धृतम्। चक्रमप्रतिचक्रेण भुवि नान्योऽभिपद्यते ॥१०-१२-३८॥
etatsunābhaṃ vṛṣṇīnām ṛṣabheṇa tvayā dhṛtam। cakram apraticakreṇa bhuvi nānyo'bhipadyate ॥10-12-38॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; सुनाभं (sunābham) - having a good navel (well-centered, well-made); वृष्णीनाम् (vṛṣṇīnām) - of the Vṛṣṇis; ऋषभेण (ṛṣabheṇa) - by the bull (chief); त्वया (tvayā) - by you; धृतम् (dhṛtam) - held; चक्रम् (cakram) - the discus; अप्रतिचक्रेण (apratikakreṇa) - with none equal (unmatched); भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; अभिपद्यते (abhipadyate) - attains;]
(This well-centered discus of the Vṛṣṇis, held by you, O chief, is unmatched; on earth, no one else attains it.)

एतावदुक्त्वा द्रौणिर्मां युग्यमश्वान्धनानि च। आदायोपययौ बालो रत्नानि विविधानि च ॥१०-१२-३९॥
etāvad uktvā drauṇir māṃ yugyam aśvān dhanāni ca। ādāya upayayau bālo ratnāni vividhāni ca॥10-12-39॥

(Thus much having said, the son of Droṇa yoked horses and treasures to me; having taken, the boy approached various gems and treasures.)

स संरम्भी दुरात्मा च चपलः क्रूर एव च। वेद चास्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरस्तस्माद्रक्ष्यो वृकोदरः ॥१०-१२-४०॥
sa saṁrambhī durātmā ca capalaḥ krūra eva ca। veda cāstraṁ brahmaśirastasmādrakṣyo vṛkodaraḥ ॥10-12-40॥
