Pancharatra and Core: Narada and Vyasa ask to withdraw the weapons for the welfare of the world. While Arjuna withdraws the weapon, Ashwatthama is unable to do so because of his impurity. Ashwatthama parts with the gem.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

दृष्ट्वैव नरशार्दूलस्तावग्निसमतेजसौ। सञ्जहार शरं दिव्यं त्वरमाणो धनञ्जयः ॥१०-१५-१॥
dṛṣṭvaiva naraśārdūlastāvagnisamatejasau। sañjahāra śaraṃ divyaṃ tvaramāṇo dhanañjayaḥ ॥10-15-1॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - indeed; नरशार्दूलः (naraśārdūlaḥ) - the tiger among men; तौ (tau) - those two; अग्निसमतेजसौ (agnisamatejasau) - equal in brilliance to fire; सञ्जहार (sañjahāra) - drew (out); शरं (śaram) - arrow; दिव्यं (divyam) - divine; त्वरमाणः (tvaramāṇaḥ) - hastily; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna);]
(Having seen indeed those two, equal in brilliance to fire, the tiger among men, Dhananjaya, hastily drew a divine arrow.)
As soon as he saw those two warriors, both blazing like fire, Arjuna, the tiger among men, quickly drew a celestial arrow.
उवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठस्तावृषी प्राञ्जलिस्तदा। प्रयुक्तमस्त्रमस्त्रेण शाम्यतामिति वै मया ॥१०-१५-२॥
uvāca vadatāṃ śreṣṭhas tāv ṛṣī prāñjalīs tadā। prayuktam astram astreṇa śāmyatām iti vai mayā॥10-15-2॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - said; वदतां (vadatām) - of those who speak; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; तौ (tau) - those two; ऋषी (ṛṣī) - sages; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रयुक्तम् (prayuktam) - employed; अस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - by a weapon; शाम्यताम् (śāmyatām) - let it be pacified; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(The best of speakers, those two sages, with joined palms, then said: "Let the weapon that has been employed be pacified by a weapon, thus indeed by me.")
Then, the best among speakers, those two sages, with joined palms, said: "Let the weapon that has been used be pacified by another weapon, thus indeed by me."
संहृते परमास्त्रेऽस्मिन्सर्वानस्मानशेषतः। पापकर्मा ध्रुवं द्रौणिः प्रधक्ष्यत्यस्त्रतेजसा ॥१०-१५-३॥
saṁhṛte paramāstre'smin sarvān asmān aśeṣataḥ। pāpakarmā dhruvaṁ drauṇiḥ pradhakṣyaty astratejasā ॥10-15-3॥
[संहृते (saṁhṛte) - when withdrawn; परमास्त्रे (paramāstre) - supreme weapon; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; अशेषतः (aśeṣataḥ) - completely; पापकर्मा (pāpakarmā) - evil-doer; ध्रुवं (dhruvaṁ) - surely; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - the son of Droṇa; प्रधक्ष्यति (pradhakṣyati) - will burn; अस्त्रतेजसा (astratejasā) - by the brilliance of the weapon;]
(When the supreme weapon is withdrawn in this (situation), the son of Droṇa, the evil-doer, will surely burn all of us completely by the brilliance of the weapon.)
If the supreme weapon is withdrawn now, Droṇa's son, who is evil-minded, will surely destroy all of us completely with the power of his weapon.
अत्र यद्धितमस्माकं लोकानां चैव सर्वथा। भवन्तौ देवसङ्काशौ तथा संहर्तुमर्हतः ॥१०-१५-४॥
atra yaddhitamasmākaṃ lokānāṃ caiva sarvathā। bhavantau devasaṅkāśau tathā saṃhartumarhataḥ ॥10-15-4॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; यत् (yat) - which; हितम् (hitam) - benefit; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; भवन्तौ (bhavantau) - you two; देवसङ्काशौ (devasaṅkāśau) - divine-like; तथा (tathā) - thus; संहर्तुम् (saṃhartum) - to destroy; अर्हतः (arhataḥ) - are worthy;]
(Here, whatever is beneficial for us and for all the worlds in every way, you two, divine-like, thus are worthy to destroy.)
Here, whatever is truly beneficial for us and for all the worlds, you two, who are like gods, are indeed worthy to accomplish that destruction.
इत्युक्त्वा सञ्जहारास्त्रं पुनरेव धनञ्जयः। संहारो दुष्करस्तस्य देवैरपि हि संयुगे ॥१०-१५-५॥
ity uktvā sañjahārāstraṃ punareva dhanañjayaḥ। saṃhāro duṣkarastasya devairapi hi saṃyuge ॥10-15-5॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; सञ्जहार (sañjahāra) - withdrew; आस्त्रं (āstraṃ) - the weapon; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); संहारः (saṃhāraḥ) - withdrawal; दुष्करः (duṣkaraḥ) - difficult; तस्य (tasya) - of that; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; हि (hi) - indeed; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(Thus having spoken, Dhananjaya again withdrew the weapon. The withdrawal of that (weapon) is difficult even for the gods in battle.)
Having said this, Dhananjaya (Arjuna) once again withdrew the weapon. The act of withdrawing that weapon is difficult even for the gods in battle.
विसृष्टस्य रणे तस्य परमास्त्रस्य सङ्ग्रहे। न शक्तः पाण्डवादन्यः साक्षादपि शतक्रतुः ॥१०-१५-६॥
visṛṣṭasya raṇe tasya paramāstrasya saṅgrahe। na śaktaḥ pāṇḍavād anyaḥ sākṣād api śatakratuḥ ॥10-15-6॥
[विसृष्टस्य (visṛṣṭasya) - released; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; तस्य (tasya) - of that; परमास्त्रस्य (paramāstrasya) - of the supreme weapon; सङ्ग्रहे (saṅgrahe) - in restraining; न (na) - not; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; पाण्डवात् (pāṇḍavāt) - than the Pāṇḍava; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - even directly; अपि (api) - even; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra;]
(In restraining that supreme weapon released in battle, no one other than the Pāṇḍava was capable, not even Indra himself.)
No one except the Pāṇḍava was able to restrain that supreme weapon released in battle, not even Indra himself.
ब्रह्मतेजोभवं तद्धि विसृष्टमकृतात्मना। न शक्यमावर्तयितुं ब्रह्मचारिव्रतादृते ॥१०-१५-७॥
brahmatejobhavaṃ taddhi visṛṣṭamakṛtātmanā। na śakyamāvartayituṃ brahmacārivratādṛte ॥10-15-7॥
[ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; भवम् (bhavam) - originated; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; विसृष्टम् (visṛṣṭam) - emitted; अकृतात्मना (akṛtātmanā) - by one who has not mastered himself; न (na) - not; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; आवर्तयितुम् (āvartayitum) - to turn back; ब्रह्मचारीव्रत (brahmacārivrata) - the vow of a brahmacārin; अदृते (adṛte) - without;]
(That which originated from the splendor of Brahman, indeed, emitted by one who has not mastered himself, cannot be turned back without the vow of a brahmacārin.)
That which has arisen from the splendor of Brahman, emitted by one who has not mastered himself, cannot be reversed except through the vow of a brahmacārin.
अचीर्णब्रह्मचर्यो यः सृष्ट्वावर्तयते पुनः। तदस्त्रं सानुबन्धस्य मूर्धानं तस्य कृन्तति ॥१०-१५-८॥
acīrṇabrahmacaryo yaḥ sṛṣṭvā vartayate punaḥ। tadastraṃ sānubandhasya mūrdhānaṃ tasya kṛntati ॥10-15-8॥
[अचीर्ण (acīrṇa) - not practiced; ब्रह्मचर्यः (brahmacaryaḥ) - celibacy; यः (yaḥ) - who; सृष्ट्वा (sṛṣṭvā) - having created; आवर्तयते (āvartayate) - repeats; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तत् (tat) - that; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - missile; सानुबन्धस्य (sānubandhasya) - with connection; मूर्धानं (mūrdhānam) - head; तस्य (tasya) - of him; कृन्तति (kṛntati) - cuts off;]
(He who, without having practiced celibacy, repeats (the mantra) again after creating (the missile), that missile with connection cuts off his head.)
If one who has not practiced celibacy repeats the invocation after launching the missile, that missile with its connection will cut off his own head.
ब्रह्मचारी व्रती चापि दुरवापमवाप्य तत्। परमव्यसनार्तोऽपि नार्जुनोऽस्त्रं व्यमुञ्चत ॥१०-१५-९॥
brahmacārī vratī cāpi duravāpam avāpya tat। paramavyasanārto'pi nārjuno'straṃ vyamuñcata ॥10-15-9॥
[ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate; व्रती (vratī) - observer of vows; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दुरवापम् (duravāpam) - difficult to obtain; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having obtained; तत् (tat) - that; परमव्यसनार्तः (paramavyasanārtaḥ) - afflicted by great distress; अपि (api) - even; नार्जुनः (nārjunaḥ) - Arjuna; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; व्यमुञ्चत् (vyamuñcat) - released;]
(The celibate, observer of vows, and also having obtained that which is difficult to obtain, even though afflicted by great distress, Arjuna released the weapon.)
Though a celibate and observer of vows, and having obtained that rare weapon, Arjuna, even in great distress, released it.
सत्यव्रतधरः शूरो ब्रह्मचारी च पाण्डवः। गुरुवर्ती च तेनास्त्रं सञ्जहारार्जुनः पुनः ॥१०-१५-१०॥
satyavratadharaḥ śūro brahmacārī ca pāṇḍavaḥ। guruvartī ca tenāstraṃ sañjahārārjunaḥ punaḥ ॥10-15-10॥
[सत्यव्रतधरः (satyavratadharaḥ) - one who upholds truth; शूरः (śūraḥ) - brave; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; गुरुवर्ती (guruvartī) - obedient to the teacher; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by him; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; सञ्जहार (sañjahāra) - withdrew; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(One who upholds truth, brave, celibate, and the Pāṇḍava, obedient to the teacher, and by him the weapon was withdrawn by Arjuna again.)
Arjuna, who was truthful, brave, celibate, a Pāṇḍava, and obedient to his teacher, again withdrew the weapon.
द्रौणिरप्यथ सम्प्रेक्ष्य तावृषी पुरतः स्थितौ। न शशाक पुनर्घोरमस्त्रं संहर्तुमाहवे ॥१०-१५-११॥
drauṇir apy atha samprekṣya tau ṛṣī purataḥ sthitau। na śaśāka punar ghoram astraṃ saṃhartum āhave ॥10-15-11॥
[द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - the son of Droṇa; अपि (api) - also; अथ (atha) - then; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; तौ (tau) - those two; ऋषी (ṛṣī) - sages; पुरतः (purataḥ) - in front; स्थितौ (sthitau) - standing; न (na) - not; शशाक (śaśāka) - was able; पुनः (punar) - again; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; अस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon; संहर्तुम् (saṃhartum) - to withdraw; आहवे (āhave) - in battle;]
(The son of Droṇa also then, having seen those two sages standing in front, was not able again to withdraw the terrible weapon in battle.)
Drona's son, seeing those two sages standing before him, was unable to withdraw the terrible weapon in the battle.
अशक्तः प्रतिसंहारे परमास्त्रस्य संयुगे। द्रौणिर्दीनमना राजन्द्वैपायनमभाषत ॥१०-१५-१२॥
aśaktaḥ pratisaṃhāre paramāstrasya saṃyuge। drauṇir dīnam-anā rājan dvaipāyanam abhāṣata ॥10-15-12॥
[अशक्तः (aśaktaḥ) - unable; प्रतिसंहारे (pratisaṃhāre) - in withdrawing; परमास्त्रस्य (paramāstrasya) - of the supreme weapon; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - the son of Droṇa; दीनमना (dīnam-anā) - with a dejected mind; राजन् (rājan) - O king; द्वैपायनम् (dvaipāyanam) - to Vyāsa; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke;]
(Unable to withdraw the supreme weapon in battle, the son of Droṇa, with a dejected mind, O king, spoke to Vyāsa.)
O king, the son of Droṇa, unable to withdraw the supreme weapon in battle and feeling dejected, spoke to Vyāsa.
उत्तमव्यसनार्तेन प्राणत्राणमभीप्सुना। मयैतदस्त्रमुत्सृष्टं भीमसेनभयान्मुने ॥१०-१५-१३॥
uttamavyasanārtena prāṇatrāṇamabhīpsunā। mayaitadastramutsṛṣṭaṃ bhīmasenabhayān mune ॥10-15-13॥
[उत्तम-व्यसन-आर्तेन (uttama-vyasana-ārtena) - by one afflicted with great calamity; प्राण-त्राणम्-अभीप्सुना (prāṇa-trāṇam-abhīpsunā) - desiring to save life; मया (mayā) - by me; एतत्-अस्त्रम्-उत्सृष्टम् (etat-astram-utsṛṣṭam) - this weapon was discharged; भीमसेन-भयात् (bhīmasena-bhayāt) - out of fear of Bhīmasena; मुने (mune) - O sage;]
(By one afflicted with great calamity, desiring to save life, by me this weapon was discharged out of fear of Bhīmasena, O sage.)
O sage, I, afflicted by great calamity and wishing to save my life, discharged this weapon out of fear of Bhīmasena.
अधर्मश्च कृतोऽनेन धार्तराष्ट्रं जिघांसता। मिथ्याचारेण भगवन्भीमसेनेन संयुगे ॥१०-१५-१४॥
adharmaś ca kṛto'nena dhārtarāṣṭraṃ jighāṃsatā। mithyācāreṇa bhagavan bhīmasenena saṃyuge ॥10-15-14॥
[अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; च (ca) - and; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - was done; अनेन (anena) - by him; धार्तराष्ट्रम् (dhārtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra's son; जिघांसता (jighāṃsatā) - desiring to kill; मिथ्याचारेण (mithyācāreṇa) - by deceit; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhimasena; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(And unrighteousness was done by him, desiring to kill Dhritarashtra's son, by deceit, O venerable one, by Bhimasena in battle.)
O venerable one, Bhimasena committed an act of unrighteousness in battle, seeking to kill Dhritarashtra's son by deceit.
अतः सृष्टमिदं ब्रह्मन्मयास्त्रमकृतात्मना। तस्य भूयोऽद्य संहारं कर्तुं नाहमिहोत्सहे ॥१०-१५-१५॥
ataḥ sṛṣṭam idaṃ brahman mayā astram akṛtātmanā। tasya bhūyo 'dya saṃhāraṃ kartuṃ nāham iha utsahe ॥10-15-15॥
[अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; सृष्टम् (sṛṣṭam) - created; इदं (idaṃ) - this; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; मया (mayā) - by me; अस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon; अकृतात्मना (akṛtātmanā) - with an unpurified mind; तस्य (tasya) - its; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; अद्य (adya) - today; संहारम् (saṃhāram) - withdrawal; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; इह (iha) - here; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able;]
(Therefore, this weapon was created by me, O Brahman, with an unpurified mind; its withdrawal again today I am not able to do here.)
Therefore, O Brahman, this weapon was created by me with an impure mind; I am not able to withdraw it again today here.
विसृष्टं हि मया दिव्यमेतदस्त्रं दुरासदम्। अपाण्डवायेति मुने वह्नितेजोऽनुमन्त्र्य वै ॥१०-१५-१६॥
visṛṣṭaṃ hi mayā divyam etad astraṃ durāsadam। apāṇḍavāyeti mune vahnitejo'numantr̥ya vai ॥10-15-16॥
[विसृष्टम् (visṛṣṭam) - released; हि (hi) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; एतत् (etat) - this; अस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon; दुरासदम् (durāsadam) - difficult to withstand; अपाण्डवाय (apāṇḍavāya) - not at the Pāṇḍavas; इति (iti) - thus; मुने (mune) - O sage; वह्नितेजः (vahnitejaḥ) - having the brilliance of fire; अनुमन्त्र्य (anumantr̥ya) - having invoked; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Indeed, this divine weapon, difficult to withstand, was released by me—not at the Pāṇḍavas—thus, O sage, having invoked the brilliance of fire, indeed.)
O sage, I released this divine weapon, which is difficult to withstand, but not at the Pāṇḍavas, having invoked the brilliance of fire.
तदिदं पाण्डवेयानामन्तकायाभिसंहितम्। अद्य पाण्डुसुतान्सर्वाञ्जीविताद्भ्रंशयिष्यति ॥१०-१५-१७॥
tad idaṃ pāṇḍaveyānām antakāyābhisaṃhitam। adya pāṇḍusutān sarvān jīvitād bhraṃśayiṣyati ॥10-15-17॥
[तत् (tat) - that; इदं (idaṃ) - this; पाण्डवेयानाम् (pāṇḍaveyānām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; अन्तकाय (antakāya) - for destruction; अभिसंहितम् (abhisaṃhitam) - intended; अद्य (adya) - today; पाण्डुसुतान् (pāṇḍusutān) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; जीवितात् (jīvitāt) - from life; भ्रंशयिष्यति (bhraṃśayiṣyati) - will cause to fall;]
(That this, intended for the destruction of the sons of Pāṇḍu, today will cause all the sons of Pāṇḍu to fall from life.)
This, which is meant for the destruction of the sons of Pāṇḍu, will today deprive all the sons of Pāṇḍu of their lives.
कृतं पापमिदं ब्रह्मन्रोषाविष्टेन चेतसा। वधमाशास्य पार्थानां मयास्त्रं सृजता रणे ॥१०-१५-१८॥
kṛtaṃ pāpam idaṃ brahman roṣāviṣṭena cetasā। vadham āśāsya pārthānāṃ mayā astraṃ sṛjatā raṇe ॥10-15-18॥
[कृतं (kṛtam) - done; पापम् (pāpam) - sinful act; इदं (idaṃ) - this; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; रोषाविष्टेन (roṣāviṣṭena) - overcome by anger; चेतसा (cetasā) - with mind; वधम् (vadham) - destruction; आशास्य (āśāsya) - expecting; पार्थानाम् (pārthānām) - of the sons of Pṛthā (Pāṇḍavas); मया (mayā) - by me; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; सृजता (sṛjatā) - while releasing; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(This sinful act was done, O Brahman, by a mind overcome with anger, expecting the destruction of the sons of Pṛthā, by me while releasing the weapon in battle.)
O Brahman, in my anger, I committed this sinful act, expecting to destroy the sons of Pṛthā, when I released the weapon in battle.
व्यास उवाच॥

अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरस्तात विद्वान्पार्थो धनञ्जयः। उत्सृष्टवान्न रोषेण न वधाय तवाहवे ॥१०-१५-१९॥
astraṃ brahmaśirastāt vidvān pārtho dhanañjayaḥ। utsṛṣṭavān na roṣeṇa na vadhāya tavāhave ॥10-15-19॥
[अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; ब्रह्मशिरस्तात् (brahmaśirastāt) - from Brahmashiras (divine weapon); विद्वान् (vidvān) - knowing; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Partha (Arjuna); धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); उत्सृष्टवान् (utsṛṣṭavān) - released; न (na) - not; रोषेण (roṣeṇa) - in anger; न (na) - not; वधाय (vadhāya) - for killing; तव (tava) - your; आहवे (āhave) - in battle;]
(The weapon from Brahmashiras, knowing, Partha (Arjuna), Dhananjaya (Arjuna), released, not in anger, not for killing your (son) in battle.)
Arjuna, known as Partha and Dhananjaya, released the Brahmashiras weapon, but not in anger and not to kill your son in battle.
अस्त्रमस्त्रेण तु रणे तव संशमयिष्यता। विसृष्टमर्जुनेनेदं पुनश्च प्रतिसंहृतम् ॥१०-१५-२०॥
astram astreṇa tu raṇe tava saṃśamayiṣyatā। visṛṣṭam arjunena idaṃ punaś ca pratisaṃhṛtam ॥10-15-20॥
[अस्त्रम् (astram) - missile; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - by a missile; तु (tu) - but; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; तव (tava) - by you; संशमयिष्यता (saṃśamayiṣyatā) - who would neutralize; विसृष्टम् (visṛṣṭam) - discharged; अर्जुनेन (arjunena) - by Arjuna; इदम् (idam) - this; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; प्रतिसंहृतम् (pratisaṃhṛtam) - withdrawn;]
(The missile by a missile, but in battle, by you, who would neutralize, discharged by Arjuna, this, again, and, withdrawn.)
But in battle, this missile, which was discharged by Arjuna, was neutralized by you with another missile and then withdrawn again.
ब्रह्मास्त्रमप्यवाप्यैतदुपदेशात्पितुस्तव। क्षत्रधर्मान्महाबाहुर्नाकम्पत धनञ्जयः ॥१०-१५-२१॥
brahmāstram apy avāpya etad upadeśāt pituḥ tava। kṣatradharmān mahābāhur na akampata dhanañjayaḥ॥10-15-21॥

(Even having obtained the Brahmāstra by this instruction of your father, the mighty-armed Dhananjaya did not waver from the duties of a warrior.)
Even after receiving the Brahmāstra through your father's instruction, the mighty-armed Dhananjaya (Arjuna) did not falter in his warrior duties.
एवं धृतिमतः साधोः सर्वास्त्रविदुषः सतः। सभ्रातृबन्धोः कस्मात्त्वं वधमस्य चिकीर्षसि ॥१०-१५-२२॥
evaṃ dhṛtimataḥ sādhoḥ sarvāstraviduṣaḥ sataḥ। sabhrātṛbandhoḥ kasmāttvaṃ vadhamasya cikīrṣasi ॥10-15-22॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; धृतिमतः (dhṛtimataḥ) - of the steadfast; साधोः (sādhoḥ) - of the virtuous; सर्वास्त्रविदुषः (sarvāstraviduṣaḥ) - knower of all weapons; सतः (sataḥ) - of the noble; सभ्रातृबन्धोः (sabhrātṛbandhoḥ) - having brothers and relatives; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वधम् (vadham) - killing; अस्य (asya) - of him; चिकीर्षसि (cikīrṣasi) - desire to do;]
(Thus, of the steadfast, virtuous, knower of all weapons, noble, having brothers and relatives, why do you desire to do the killing of him?)
Why do you wish to kill this steadfast and virtuous man, who knows all weapons, is noble, and has brothers and relatives?
अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरो यत्र परमास्त्रेण वध्यते। समा द्वादश पर्जन्यस्तद्राष्ट्रं नाभिवर्षति ॥१०-१५-२३॥
astraṃ brahmaśiro yatra paramāstreṇa vadhyate। samā dvādaśa parjanyas tadrāṣṭraṃ nābhivarṣati ॥10-15-23॥
[अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; ब्रह्मशिरः (brahmaśiraḥ) - Brahmashira (divine weapon); यत्र (yatra) - where; परमास्त्रेण (paramāstreṇa) - by supreme weapon; वध्यते (vadhyate) - is struck; समा (samā) - years; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; पर्जन्यः (parjanyaḥ) - rain god; तद्राष्ट्रं (tadrāṣṭraṃ) - that kingdom; न (na) - not; अभिवर्षति (abhivarṣati) - showers upon;]
(Where the Brahmashira weapon is struck by a supreme weapon, for twelve years the rain god does not shower upon that kingdom.)

एतदर्थं महाबाहुः शक्तिमानपि पाण्डवः। न विहन्त्येतदस्त्रं ते प्रजाहितचिकीर्षया ॥१०-१५-२४॥
etad-arthaṃ mahā-bāhuḥ śaktimān api pāṇḍavaḥ। na vihanty etad astraṃ te prajā-hita-cikīrṣayā॥10-15-24॥
[एतदर्थं (etad-artham) - for this purpose; महाबाहुः (mahā-bāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; शक्तिमान् (śaktimān) - powerful; अपि (api) - even; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu; न (na) - not; विहन्ति (vihanti) - destroys; एतत् (etat) - this; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; ते (te) - your; प्रजाहितचिकीर्षया (prajā-hita-cikīrṣayā) - with the desire to do good to the people;]
(For this purpose, the mighty-armed, powerful son of Pāṇḍu does not destroy this weapon of yours, with the desire to do good to the people.)
For this reason, the mighty and powerful Pāṇḍava refrains from destroying your weapon, wishing to benefit the people.
पाण्डवास्त्वं च राष्ट्रं च सदा संरक्ष्यमेव नः। तस्मात्संहर दिव्यं त्वमस्त्रमेतन्महाभुज ॥१०-१५-२५॥
pāṇḍavās tvaṃ ca rāṣṭraṃ ca sadā saṃrakṣyam eva naḥ। tasmāt saṃhara divyaṃ tvam astram etan mahābhuja ॥10-15-25॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; राष्ट्रम् (rāṣṭram) - the kingdom; च (ca) - and; सदा (sadā) - always; संरक्ष्यम् (saṃrakṣyam) - to be protected; एव (eva) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - by us; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; संहर (saṃhara) - withdraw; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्त्रम् (astram) - weapon; एतत् (etat) - this; महाभुज (mahābhuja) - O mighty-armed one;]
(The Pāṇḍavas, you, and the kingdom are always indeed to be protected by us. Therefore, you withdraw this divine weapon, O mighty-armed one.)

अरोषस्तव चैवास्तु पार्थाः सन्तु निरामयाः। न ह्यधर्मेण राजर्षिः पाण्डवो जेतुमिच्छति ॥१०-१५-२६॥
aroṣas tava caivāstu pārthāḥ santu nirāmayāḥ। na hy adharmeṇa rājarṣiḥ pāṇḍavo jetum icchati ॥10-15-26॥
[अरोषः (aroṣaḥ) - without anger; तव (tava) - your; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pritha; सन्तु (santu) - may they be; निरामयाः (nirāmayāḥ) - free from disease; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अधर्मेण (adharmeṇa) - by unrighteousness; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pandava; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; इच्छति (icchati) - desires;]
(Let there be no anger in you, and may the sons of Pritha be free from disease. For the royal sage Pandava does not wish to conquer by unrighteousness.)

[मणिम् (maṇim) - the jewel; च (ca) - and; एतं (etaṃ) - this; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; एभ्यः (ebhyaḥ) - to these (men); यः (yaḥ) - which; ते (te) - on your; शिरसि (śirasi) - head; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - is placed; एतत् (etat) - this; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; ते (te) - your; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; प्रतिदास्यन्ति (pratidāsyanti) - will return; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Give this jewel, which is on your head, to these men; having taken this, the Pāṇḍavas will return your life-breaths.)

पाण्डवैर्यानि रत्नानि यच्चान्यत्कौरवैर्धनम्। अवाप्तानीह तेभ्योऽयं मणिर्मम विशिष्यते ॥१०-१५-२८॥
pāṇḍavairyāni ratnāni yaccānyatkauravairdhanam। avāptānīha tebhyo'yaṃ maṇirmama viśiṣyate ॥10-15-28॥
[पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; यानि (yāni) - which; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; कौरवैः (kauravaiḥ) - by the Kauravas; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; अवाप्तानि (avāptāni) - obtained; इह (iha) - here; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from them; अयम् (ayam) - this; मणिः (maṇiḥ) - gem; मम (mama) - my; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - excels;]
(By the Pāṇḍavas, whatever gems and other wealth obtained here by the Kauravas, from them, this gem of mine excels.)
Of all the gems and wealth obtained here by the Pāṇḍavas and the Kauravas, this gem of mine surpasses them all.
यमाबध्य भयं नास्ति शस्त्रव्याधिक्षुधाश्रयम्। देवेभ्यो दानवेभ्यो वा नागेभ्यो वा कथञ्चन ॥१०-१५-२९॥
yamābadhya bhayaṃ nāsti śastravyādhikṣudhāśrayam। devebhyo dānavebhyo vā nāgebhyo vā kathañcana ॥10-15-29॥
[यम (yama) - Yama; (the god of death); आबध्य (ābadhya) - being bound; भयं (bhayam) - fear; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; शस्त्र (śastra) - weapon; व्याधि (vyādhi) - disease; क्षुधा (kṣudhā) - hunger; आश्रयम् (āśrayam) - refuge; देवेभ्यः (devebhyaḥ) - from the gods; दानवेभ्यः (dānavebhyaḥ) - from the demons; वा (vā) - or; नागेभ्यः (nāgebhyaḥ) - from the nāgas; वा (vā) - or; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Being bound by Yama, there is no fear of weapon, disease, or hunger as a refuge; not in any way from the gods, demons, or nāgas.)
One who is bound by Yama need not fear weapons, disease, or hunger, nor is there any danger from gods, demons, or nāgas in any way.
न च रक्षोगणभयं न तस्करभयं तथा। एवंवीर्यो मणिरयं न मे त्याज्यः कथञ्चन ॥१०-१५-३०॥
na ca rakṣogaṇabhayaṃ na taskarabhayaṃ tathā। evaṃvīryo maṇirayaṃ na me tyājyaḥ kathaṃcana ॥10-15-30॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; रक्षोगणभयं (rakṣogaṇabhayaṃ) - fear of groups of demons; न (na) - not; तस्करभयं (taskarabhayaṃ) - fear of thieves; तथा (tathā) - likewise; एवंवीर्यः (evaṃvīryaḥ) - of such power; मणिरयम् (maṇirayam) - this jewel; न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; त्याज्यः (tyājyaḥ) - to be abandoned; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Not even fear of groups of demons, nor fear of thieves likewise. This jewel of such power is not to be abandoned by me in any way.)
I do not fear groups of demons or thieves. This powerful jewel is not to be abandoned by me under any circumstances.
यत्तु मे भगवानाह तन्मे कार्यमनन्तरम्। अयं मणिरयं चाहमिषीका निपतिष्यति ॥ गर्भेषु पाण्डवेयानाममोघं चैतदुद्यतम् ॥१०-१५-३१॥
yattu me bhagavānāha tanme kāryamanantaram। ayaṃ maṇirayaṃ cāhamiṣīkā nipatiṣyati ॥ garbheṣu pāṇḍaveyānāmamoghaṃ caitadudyatam ॥10-15-31॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तु (tu) - but; मे (me) - to me; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; आह (āha) - said; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; अनन्तरम् (anantaram) - immediately; अयम् (ayam) - this; मणिः (maṇiḥ) - gem; अयम् (ayam) - this; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; इषीका (iṣīkā) - arrow; निपतिष्यति (nipatiṣyati) - will fall; गर्भेषु (garbheṣu) - in the wombs; पाण्डवेयानाम् (pāṇḍaveyānām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; अमोघम् (amogham) - unfailing; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; उद्यतम् (udyatam) - has been released;]
(But that which the Lord said to me, that I must do immediately. This gem, this arrow, I will let fall. In the wombs of the sons of Pāṇḍu, this unfailing (weapon) has been released.)
But what the Lord told me, I must do at once. This gem, this arrow, I will let fall. This unfailing weapon has been released into the wombs of the sons of Pāṇḍu.
व्यास उवाच॥

[व्यास (vyāsa) - Vyāsa; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

एवं कुरु न चान्या ते बुद्धिः कार्या कदाचन। गर्भेषु पाण्डवेयानां विसृज्यैतदुपारम ॥१०-१५-३२॥
evaṃ kuru na cānyā te buddhiḥ kāryā kadācana। garbheṣu pāṇḍaveyānāṃ visṛjyaitadupārama ॥10-15-32॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कुरु (kuru) - do; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्या (anyā) - other; ते (te) - your; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; कार्या (kāryā) - should be made; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time; गर्भेषु (garbheṣu) - in the wombs; पाण्डवेयानां (pāṇḍaveyānāṃ) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu; विसृज्य (visṛjya) - having abandoned; एतत् (etat) - this; उपारम (upārama) - cease;]
(Thus do; not and other your intellect should be made at any time. In the wombs of the sons of Pāṇḍu, having abandoned this, cease.)
Do thus; never let your mind be otherwise. Abandon this in regard to the wombs of the sons of Pāṇḍu, and cease.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

tataḥ paramamastraṃ tadaśvatthāmā bhṛśāturaḥ। dvaipāyanavacaḥ śrutvā garbheṣu pramumoca ha ॥10-15-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; तत् (tat) - that; अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Aśvatthāmā; भृशातुरः (bhṛśāturaḥ) - greatly distressed; द्वैपायनवचः (dvaipāyanavacaḥ) - Vyāsa's words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; गर्भेषु (garbheṣu) - in the wombs; प्रमुमोच (pramumoca) - released; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then that Aśvatthāmā, greatly distressed, having heard Vyāsa's words, indeed released the supreme weapon at those in the wombs.)
Then, greatly distressed, Aśvatthāmā, after hearing Vyāsa's words, released the supreme weapon at the unborn children.
