Pancharatra and Core: Parikshit will be born dead due to the impact of the weapon, but will be revived. Ashwatthama, after receiving Krishna's curse, hands over the gem and goes to the forest to live in seclusion. Bhima gives the gem to Draupadi, who gives it to Yudhishthira, to be worn as a righteous king.

परिक्षीणेषु कुरुषु पुत्रस्तव जनिष्यति। एतदस्य परिक्षित्त्वं गर्भस्थस्य भविष्यति ॥१०-१६-३॥
parikṣīṇeṣu kuruṣu putras tava janiṣyati। etad asya parikṣittvaṃ garbhasthasya bhaviṣyati ॥10-16-3॥

(When the Kurus are destroyed, your son will be born. This will be the state of being Parikṣit for the one in the womb.)
When the Kurus are destroyed, your son will be born. The one in the womb will be known as Parikṣit.
तस्य तद्वचनं साधोः सत्यमेव भविष्यति। परिक्षिद्भविता ह्येषां पुनर्वंशकरः सुतः ॥१०-१६-४॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ sādhoḥ satyameva bhaviṣyati। parikṣidbhavitā hyeṣāṃ punarvaṃśakaraḥ sutaḥ ॥10-16-4॥

(Of him, that statement of the sage will indeed be true. Parikshit will indeed be the son who will again be the progenitor of their lineage.)
The sage's statement about him will certainly come true. Parikshit will be born as the son who will restore their lineage.
एवं ब्रुवाणं गोविन्दं सात्वतप्रवरं तदा। द्रौणिः परमसंरब्धः प्रत्युवाचेदमुत्तरम् ॥१०-१६-५॥
evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ govindaṃ sātvata-pravaraṃ tadā। drauṇiḥ parama-saṃrabdhaḥ pratyuvācedam uttaram ॥10-16-5॥

(Thus, to Govinda, the foremost among the Sātvatas, speaking so then, the son of Droṇa, extremely enraged, replied this answer.)
As Govinda, the foremost of the Sātvatas, spoke thus, then Droṇa's son, burning with rage, gave this reply.
नैतदेवं यथात्थ त्वं पक्षपातेन केशव। वचनं पुण्डरीकाक्ष न च मद्वाक्यमन्यथा ॥१०-१६-६॥
naitadevaṃ yathāttha tvaṃ pakṣapātena keśava| vacanaṃ puṇḍarīkākṣa na ca madvākyamanyathā ॥10-16-6॥

O Keśava, it is not as you say with partiality. O lotus-eyed one, your statement is not otherwise than my word.
पतिष्यत्येतदस्त्रं हि गर्भे तस्या मयोद्यतम्। विराटदुहितुः कृष्ण यां त्वं रक्षितुमिच्छसि ॥१०-१६-७॥
patiṣyaty etad astraṃ hi garbhe tasyā mayodyatam। virāṭ-duhituḥ kṛṣṇa yāṃ tvaṃ rakṣitum icchasi ॥10-16-7॥
[पतिष्यति (patiṣyati) - will fall; एतत् (etat) - this; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; हि (hi) - indeed; गर्भे (garbhe) - in the womb; तस्या (tasyā) - of her; मया (mayā) - by me; उद्यतम् (udyatam) - raised; विराटदुहितुः (virāṭ-duhituḥ) - of the daughter of Virāṭa; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; याम् (yām) - whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect; इच्छसि (icchasi) - wish;]
(This weapon, indeed, raised by me, will fall in the womb of her whom, O Kṛṣṇa, you wish to protect, the daughter of Virāṭa.)
O Kṛṣṇa, this weapon that I have raised will fall upon the womb of the daughter of Virāṭa, whom you wish to protect.

अमोघः परमास्त्रस्य पातस्तस्य भविष्यति। स तु गर्भो मृतो जातो दीर्घमायुरवाप्स्यति ॥१०-१६-८॥
amoghaḥ paramāstrasya pātastasya bhaviṣyati। sa tu garbho mṛto jāto dīrghamāyuravāpsyati ॥10-16-8॥
[अमोघः (amoghaḥ) - unfailing; परमास्त्रस्य (paramāstrasya) - of the supreme weapon; पातः (pātaḥ) - fall; तस्य (tasya) - of it; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - the fetus; मृतः (mṛtaḥ) - dead; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; दीर्घमायुः (dīrghamāyuḥ) - long-lived; अवाप्स्यति (avāpsyati) - will obtain;]
(The fall of the supreme weapon will be unfailing. But he, the fetus who was born dead, will obtain long life.)
The supreme weapon's strike will not fail. However, the child who was born dead will gain a long life.
त्वां तु कापुरुषं पापं विदुः सर्वे मनीषिणः। असकृत्पापकर्माणं बालजीवितघातकम् ॥१०-१६-९॥
tvāṃ tu kāpuruṣaṃ pāpaṃ viduḥ sarve manīṣiṇaḥ। asakṛtpāpakarmāṇaṃ bālajīvitaghātakam ॥10-16-9॥
[त्वाम् (tvām) - you; तु (tu) - but; कापुरुषम् (kāpuruṣam) - a vile man; पापम् (pāpam) - a sinner; विदुः (viduḥ) - (they) know; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; पापकर्माणम् (pāpakarmāṇam) - one who does evil deeds; बालजीवितघातकम् (bālajīvitaghātakam) - destroyer of children's lives;]
(But all the wise know you as a vile man, a sinner, one who repeatedly does evil deeds, a destroyer of children's lives.)
But all the wise recognize you as a wicked person, a sinner, one who repeatedly commits evil acts and destroys the lives of children.
तस्मात्त्वमस्य पापस्य कर्मणः फलमाप्नुहि। त्रीणि वर्षसहस्राणि चरिष्यसि महीमिमाम् ॥ अप्राप्नुवन्क्वचित्काञ्चित्संविदं जातु केनचित् ॥१०-१६-१०॥
tasmāttvam asya pāpasya karmaṇaḥ phalam āpnuhi। trīṇi varṣasahasrāṇi cariṣyasi mahīm imām ॥ aprāpnuvan kvacit kāñcit saṃvidaṃ jātu kenacit ॥10-16-10॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्य (asya) - of this; पापस्य (pāpasya) - sinful; कर्मणः (karmaṇaḥ) - action; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; आप्नुहि (āpnuhi) - obtain; त्रीणि (trīṇi) - three; वर्षसहस्राणि (varṣasahasrāṇi) - thousand years; चरिष्यसि (cariṣyasi) - you will wander; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; अप्राप्नु (aprāpnuvan) - not obtaining; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; काञ्चित् (kāñcit) - any; संविदम् (saṃvidam) - understanding; जातु (jātu) - ever; केनचित् (kenacit) - by anyone;]
(Therefore, you obtain the fruit of this sinful action. For three thousand years, you will wander this earth, not obtaining any understanding anywhere, ever, by anyone.)
Therefore, you must bear the consequences of this sinful deed. For three thousand years, you will roam this earth, never gaining any understanding from anyone, anywhere.
निर्जनानसहायस्त्वं देशान्प्रविचरिष्यसि। भवित्री न हि ते क्षुद्र जनमध्येषु संस्थितिः ॥१०-१६-११॥
nirjanānasahāyas tvaṃ deśān pravicariṣyasi। bhavitri na hi te kṣudra janamadhyeṣu saṃsthitiḥ ॥10-16-11॥
[निर्जन (nirjana) - deserted; अनसहायः (anasahāyaḥ) - without help; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; देशान् (deśān) - lands; प्रविचरिष्यसि (pravicariṣyasi) - will wander; भवित्री (bhavitri) - future; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; क्षुद्र (kṣudra) - mean; जनमध्येषु (janamadhyeṣu) - among common people; संस्थितिः (saṃsthitiḥ) - existence;]
(You, without help in deserted places, will wander lands. Indeed, your future existence is not among mean people.)
You will wander alone and unaided through deserted lands. Your future is not to be found among the common or mean people.
पूयशोणितगन्धी च दुर्गकान्तारसंश्रयः। विचरिष्यसि पापात्मन्सर्वव्याधिसमन्वितः ॥१०-१६-१२॥
pūyaśoṇitagandhī ca durgakāntārasaṃśrayaḥ। vicariṣyasi pāpātmansarvavyādhisamanvitaḥ ॥10-16-12॥
[पूय (pūya) - pus; शोणित (śoṇita) - blood; गन्धी (gandhī) - smelling; च (ca) - and; दुर्ग (durga) - difficult; कान्तार (kāntāra) - forest; संश्रयः (saṃśrayaḥ) - taking refuge; विचरिष्यसि (vicariṣyasi) - you will wander; पापात्मन् (pāpātman) - O evil-souled one; सर्व (sarva) - all; व्याधि (vyādhi) - diseases; समन्वितः (samanvitaḥ) - afflicted;]
(Smelling of pus and blood and taking refuge in difficult forests, you will wander, O evil-souled one, afflicted with all diseases.)
You, O evil-souled one, will wander in difficult forests, reeking of pus and blood, afflicted with every disease.
वयः प्राप्य परिक्षित्तु वेदव्रतमवाप्य च। कृपाच्छारद्वताद्वीरः सर्वास्त्राण्युपलप्स्यते ॥१०-१६-१३॥
vayaḥ prāpya parikṣittu vedavratam avāpya ca। kṛpācchāradvatād vīraḥ sarvāstrāṇi upalapsyate ॥10-16-13॥
[वयः (vayaḥ) - age; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; परिक्षित्तु (parikṣittu) - having completed the examination; वेदव्रतम् (vedavratam) - the vow of Veda-study; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having obtained; च (ca) - and; कृपात् (kṛpāt) - from Kṛpa; शारद्वतात् (śāradvatāt) - from Śāradvat (another name for Kṛpa); वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; सर्वास्त्राणि (sarvāstrāṇi) - all weapons; उपलप्स्यते (upalapsyate) - will obtain;]
(Having attained age, having completed the examination, and having obtained the vow of Veda-study, the hero will obtain all weapons from Kṛpa and Śāradvat.)
When he comes of age, completes his examination, and fulfills his vow of Vedic study, the hero will receive all weapons from Kṛpa and Śāradvat.
विदित्वा परमास्त्राणि क्षत्रधर्मव्रते स्थितः। षष्टिं वर्षाणि धर्मात्मा वसुधां पालयिष्यति ॥१०-१६-१४॥
viditvā paramāstrāṇi kṣatradharmavrate sthitaḥ। ṣaṣṭiṃ varṣāṇi dharmātmā vasudhāṃ pālayiṣyati ॥10-16-14॥
[विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; परमास्त्राणि (paramāstrāṇi) - the supreme weapons; क्षत्रधर्मव्रते (kṣatradharmavrate) - in the vow of the warrior's duty; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - having stood; षष्टिं (ṣaṣṭim) - sixty; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - the righteous one; वसुधाम् (vasudhām) - the earth; पालयिष्यति (pālayiṣyati) - will protect;]
(Having known the supreme weapons, having stood in the vow of the warrior's duty, the righteous one will protect the earth for sixty years.)
Having mastered the supreme weapons and steadfast in the warrior's duty, the righteous king will rule and protect the earth for sixty years.
इतश्चोर्ध्वं महाबाहुः कुरुराजो भविष्यति। परिक्षिन्नाम नृपतिर्मिषतस्ते सुदुर्मते ॥ पश्य मे तपसो वीर्यं सत्यस्य च नराधम ॥१०-१६-१५॥
itaścordhvaṃ mahābāhuḥ kururājo bhaviṣyati। parikṣinnāma nṛpatirmiṣataste sudurmate ॥ paśya me tapaso vīryaṃ satyasya ca narādhama ॥10-16-15॥
[इतः (itaḥ) - from here; च (ca) - and; ऊर्ध्वं (ūrdhvaṃ) - upwards; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; कुरु-राजः (kuru-rājaḥ) - the king of the Kurus; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; परिक्षित्-नाम (parikṣit-nāma) - named Parikṣit; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; मिषतः (miṣataḥ) - before your eyes; ते (te) - your; सुदुर्मते (sudurmate) - O wicked-minded; पश्य (paśya) - see; मे (me) - my; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of penance; वीर्यं (vīryaṃ) - the power; सत्यस्य (satyasya) - of truth; च (ca) - and; नराधम (narādhama) - O lowest of men;]
(From here and upwards, the mighty-armed king of the Kurus will be; a king named Parikṣit, before your eyes, O wicked-minded one. See my power of penance and of truth, O lowest of men.)
From this point onward, the mighty-armed king of the Kurus will arise—a king named Parikṣit, right before your eyes, O wicked-minded one. Behold the power of my penance and truth, O lowest of men.

यस्मादनादृत्य कृतं त्वयास्मान्कर्म दारुणम्। ब्राह्मणस्य सतश्चैव यस्मात्ते वृत्तमीदृशम् ॥१०-१६-१६॥
yasmād anādṛtya kṛtaṃ tvayāsmān karma dāruṇam। brāhmaṇasya sataś caiva yasmāt te vṛttam īdṛśam ॥10-16-16॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; अनादृत्य (anādṛtya) - disregarding; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अस्मान् (asmān) - to us; कर्म (karma) - act; दारुणम् (dāruṇam) - cruel; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brāhmaṇa; सतः (sataḥ) - righteous; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; ते (te) - your; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - conduct; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such;]
(Because, disregarding, done, by you, to us, act, cruel. Of the Brāhmaṇa, righteous, and indeed, because, your, conduct, such.)
Because you have disregarded us and committed this cruel act, and because your conduct towards the righteous Brāhmaṇa is such.
तस्माद्यद्देवकीपुत्र उक्तवानुत्तमं वचः। असंशयं ते तद्भावि क्षुद्रकर्मन्व्रजाश्वितः ॥१०-१६-१७॥
tasmādyaddevakīputra uktavānuttamaṃ vacaḥ। asaṃśayaṃ te tadbhāvi kṣudrakarmanvasjāśvitaḥ ॥10-16-17॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; यत् (yat) - which; देवकीपुत्रः (devakīputraḥ) - Devakī's son; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - has spoken; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt; ते (te) - to you; तत् (tat) - that; भावि (bhāvi) - will happen; क्षुद्रकर्मन् (kṣudrakarman) - of petty deeds; व्रज (vraja) - depart; अश्वितः (aśvitaḥ) - immediately;]
(Therefore, that which Devakī's son has spoken, the excellent speech, without doubt, to you, that will happen; depart from petty deeds immediately.)
Therefore, whatever excellent words Devakī's son has spoken to you will certainly come to pass; so, without doubt, leave behind petty actions at once.

sahaiva bhavatā brahman sthāsyāmi puruṣeṣv aham। satyavāgas tu bhagavān ayaṃ ca puruṣottamaḥ ॥10-16-18॥
[सह एव (saha eva) - together indeed; भवता (bhavatā) - with you; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; स्थास्यामि (sthāsyāmi) - I shall remain; पुरुषेषु (puruṣeṣu) - among men; अहम् (aham) - I; सत्यवाक् (satyavāk) - truth-speaking; तु (tu) - but; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; अयम् (ayam) - this; च (ca) - and; पुरुषोत्तमः (puruṣottamaḥ) - the best among men;]
(Together indeed with you, O Brahman, I shall remain among men; but this venerable truth-speaking one and the best among men.)
I will remain among men together with you, O Brahman; but this venerable one, who always speaks the truth, is the best among men.

पाण्डवाश्चापि गोविन्दं पुरस्कृत्य हतद्विषः। कृष्णद्वैपायनं चैव नारदं च महामुनिम् ॥१०-१६-२०॥

अवतीर्य रथाभ्यां तु त्वरमाणा महारथाः। ददृशुर्द्रौपदीं कृष्णामार्तामार्ततराः स्वयम् ॥१०-१६-२३॥
avatīrya rathābhyāṃ tu tvaramāṇā mahārathāḥ। dadṛśur draupadīṃ kṛṣṇām ārtām ārtatarāḥ svayam ॥10-16-23॥

उक्तवत्यसि धीराणि वाक्यानि पुरुषोत्तमम्। क्षत्रधर्मानुरूपाणि तानि संस्मर्तुमर्हसि ॥१०-१६-२९॥
uktavatyasi dhīrāṇi vākyāni puruṣottamam। kṣatradharmānurūpāṇi tāni saṃsmartumarhasi ॥10-16-29॥

(Then the lord, wearing the excellent divine jewel on his head, shone; he, the great king, was like a mountain with the moon.)
