विदुरस्य तु तद्वाक्यं निशम्य कुरुसत्तमः। पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्तः पपात भुवि मूर्छितः ॥११-८-१॥
vidurasya tu tad vākyaṃ niśamya kurusattamaḥ। putraśokābhisantaptaḥ papāta bhuvi mūrcchitaḥ ॥11-8-1॥
[विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; कुरुसत्तमः (kurusattamaḥ) - the best of the Kurus; पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्तः (putraśokābhisantaptaḥ) - afflicted by grief for his son; पपात (papāta) - fell; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground; मूर्छितः (mūrcchitaḥ) - unconscious;]
(But having heard that speech of Vidura, the best of the Kurus, afflicted by grief for his son, fell unconscious on the ground.)
But when he heard Vidura's words, the noble Kuru, overwhelmed by grief for his son, collapsed unconscious to the ground.
तं तथा पतितं भूमौ निःसञ्ज्ञं प्रेक्ष्य बान्धवाः। कृष्णद्वैपायनश्चैव क्षत्ता च विदुरस्तथा ॥११-८-२॥
taṃ tathā patitaṃ bhūmau niḥsañjñaṃ prekṣya bāndhavāḥ। kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaścaiva kṣattā ca vidurastathā ॥11-8-2॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; तथा (tathā) - thus; पतितं (patitaṃ) - fallen; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; निःसञ्ज्ञं (niḥsañjñaṃ) - unconscious; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - seeing; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - relatives; कृष्णद्वैपायनः (kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; क्षत्ता (kṣattā) - the charioteer; च (ca) - and; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Seeing him thus fallen on the ground, unconscious, the relatives, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, and indeed the charioteer and Vidura also.)
Seeing him fallen unconscious on the ground, the relatives, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, the charioteer, and Vidura also gathered around.
सञ्जयः सुहृदश्चान्ये द्वाःस्था ये चास्य संमताः। जलेन सुखशीतेन तालवृन्तैश्च भारत ॥११-८-३॥
sañjayaḥ suhṛdaś cānye dvāḥsthā ye cāsya saṃmatāḥ। jalena sukhaśītena tālavṛntaiś ca bhārata॥11-8-3॥
[सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) - Sanjaya; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; द्वाःस्था (dvāḥsthā) - doorkeepers; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; संमताः (saṃmatāḥ) - approved; जलेन (jalena) - with water; सुखशीतेन (sukhaśītena) - pleasantly cool; तालवृन्तैः (tālavṛntaiḥ) - with palm leaves; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(Sanjaya, friends and others, doorkeepers who are approved by him, with water, with pleasantly cool (water), with palm leaves and, O Bharata.)
O Bharata, Sanjaya, his friends, other attendants, and the doorkeepers he approved, served with pleasantly cool water and palm leaves.
पस्पृशुश्च करैर्गात्रं वीजमानाश्च यत्नतः। अन्वासन्सुचिरं कालं धृतराष्ट्रं तथागतम् ॥११-८-४॥
paspṛśuś ca karair gātraṃ vījamānāś ca yatnataḥ। anvāsan suciraṃ kālaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ tathāgatam ॥11-8-4॥
[पस्पृशुः (paspṛśuḥ) - touched; च (ca) - and; करैः (karaiḥ) - with hands; गात्रम् (gātram) - body; वीजमानाः (vījamānāḥ) - fanning; च (ca) - and; यत्नतः (yatnataḥ) - carefully; अन्वासन् (anvāsan) - remained near; सुचिरम् (suciram) - for a long time; कालम् (kālam) - time; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; तथागतम् (tathāgatam) - thus arrived;]
(They touched the body with their hands and fanned (him) carefully; they remained near Dhritarashtra, who had thus arrived, for a long time.)
They touched Dhritarashtra's body with their hands and carefully fanned him; for a long time, they stayed by his side after he had arrived.
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य लब्धसञ्ज्ञो महीपतिः। विललाप चिरं कालं पुत्राधिभिरभिप्लुतः ॥११-८-५॥
atha dīrghasya kālasya labdhasaṃjño mahīpatiḥ। vilalāpa ciraṃ kālaṃ putrādhibhirabhiplutaḥ ॥11-8-5॥
[अथ (atha) - then; दीर्घस्य (dīrghasya) - of long; कालस्य (kālasya) - time; लब्धसञ्ज्ञः (labdhasaṃjñaḥ) - having regained consciousness; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king; विललाप (vilalāpa) - lamented; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long; कालम् (kālam) - time; पुत्राधिभिः (putrādhibhiḥ) - with griefs relating to his son; अभिप्लुतः (abhiplutaḥ) - overwhelmed;]
(Then, after a long time, the king, having regained consciousness, lamented for a long time, overwhelmed with griefs relating to his son.)
Then, after a long time, the king regained consciousness and, overwhelmed by grief for his son, lamented for a long while.
धिगस्तु खलु मानुष्यं मानुष्ये च परिग्रहम्। यतोमूलानि दुःखानि सम्भवन्ति मुहुर्मुहुः ॥११-८-६॥
dhig astu khalu mānuṣyaṃ mānuṣye ca parigraham। yato mūlāni duḥkhāni sambhavanti muhurmuhuḥ ॥11-8-6॥
[धिक् (dhik) - condemnation; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; खलु (khalu) - indeed; मानुष्यं (mānuṣyam) - human nature; मानुष्ये (mānuṣye) - in a human; च (ca) - and; परिग्रहम् (parigraham) - attachment; यतः (yataḥ) - from which; मूलानि (mūlāni) - roots; दुःखानि (duḥkhāni) - sufferings; सम्भवन्ति (sambhavanti) - arise; मुःमुहुः (muhurmuhuḥ) - again and again;]
(Let there be condemnation indeed of human nature and attachment in a human; from which roots sufferings arise again and again.)
Truly, let human nature and human attachments be condemned, for from these roots, sufferings arise repeatedly.
पुत्रनाशेऽर्थनाशे च ज्ञातिसम्बन्धिनामपि। प्राप्यते सुमहद्दुःखं विषाग्निप्रतिमं विभो ॥११-८-७॥
putranāśe'rthanāśe ca jñātisambandhinām api। prāpyate sumahadduḥkhaṃ viṣāgnipratimaṃ vibho ॥11-8-7॥
[पुत्रनाशे (putranāśe) - upon the loss of a son; अर्थनाशे (arthanāśe) - upon the loss of wealth; च (ca) - and; ज्ञातिसम्बन्धिनाम् (jñātisambandhinām) - of relatives and connections; अपि (api) - also; प्राप्यते (prāpyate) - is obtained; सुमहद्दुःखं (sumahadduḥkhaṃ) - great sorrow; विषाग्निप्रतिमं (viṣāgnipratimaṃ) - like poison or fire; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]
(Upon the loss of a son, upon the loss of wealth, and also of relatives and connections, great sorrow like poison or fire is obtained, O lord.)
O lord, when one loses a son, wealth, or even relatives and connections, one experiences immense grief, as if struck by poison or fire.
येन दह्यन्ति गात्राणि येन प्रज्ञा विनश्यति। येनाभिभूतः पुरुषो मरणं बहु मन्यते ॥११-८-८॥
yena dahyanti gātrāṇi yena prajñā vinaśyati। yenābhibhūtaḥ puruṣo maraṇaṃ bahu manyate ॥11-8-8॥
[येन (yena) - by which; दह्यन्ति (dahyanti) - are burned; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; येन (yena) - by which; प्रज्ञा (prajñā) - wisdom; विनश्यति (vinaśyati) - is destroyed; येन (yena) - by which; अभिभूतः (abhibhūtaḥ) - overpowered; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a person; मरणम् (maraṇam) - death; बहु (bahu) - much; मन्यते (manyate) - considers;]
(By which the limbs are burned, by which wisdom is destroyed, by which, being overpowered, a person considers death as significant.)
That which burns the limbs, destroys wisdom, and, when it overpowers a person, makes him regard death as highly significant.
तदिदं व्यसनं प्राप्तं मया भाग्यविपर्ययात्। तच्चैवाहं करिष्यामि अद्यैव द्विजसत्तम ॥११-८-९॥
tad idaṃ vyasanaṃ prāptaṃ mayā bhāgyaviparyayāt। tac caiva ahaṃ kariṣyāmi adyaiva dvijasattama ॥11-8-9॥
[तत् (tat) - that; इदं (idaṃ) - this; व्यसनं (vyasanaṃ) - misfortune; प्राप्तं (prāptaṃ) - has occurred; मया (mayā) - by me; भाग्यविपर्ययात् (bhāgyaviparyayāt) - due to reversal of fortune; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - shall do; अद्य (adya) - today; एव (eva) - itself; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born;]
(That this misfortune has occurred to me due to reversal of fortune. That indeed I shall do today itself, O best of the twice-born.)
This misfortune has come upon me because of a reversal of fortune. I will indeed do that today itself, O best of the twice-born.
इत्युक्त्वा तु महात्मानं पितरं ब्रह्मवित्तमम्। धृतराष्ट्रोऽभवन्मूढः शोकं च परमं गतः ॥ अभूच्च तूष्णीं राजासौ ध्यायमानो महीपते ॥११-८-१०॥
ity uktvā tu mahātmānaṃ pitaraṃ brahmavittamam। dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhavanmūḍhaḥ śokaṃ ca paramaṃ gataḥ ॥ abhūc ca tūṣṇīṃ rājāsau dhyāyamāno mahīpate ॥11-8-10॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - the great-souled; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; ब्रह्मवित्तमम् (brahmavittamam) - knower of Brahman; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - deluded; शोकं (śokaṃ) - grief; च (ca) - and; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; गतः (gataḥ) - attained; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; च (ca) - and; तूष्णीं (tūṣṇīṃ) - silent; राजा (rājā) - the king; असौ (asau) - he; ध्यायमानः (dhyāyamānaḥ) - reflecting; महीपते (mahīpate) - O lord of the earth;]
(Thus having spoken, but to the great-souled father, knower of Brahman, Dhritarashtra became deluded and attained supreme grief. And the king became silent, reflecting, O lord of the earth.)
Having thus addressed his great-souled father, the knower of Brahman, Dhritarashtra became bewildered and overwhelmed with intense grief. The king then fell silent, lost in contemplation, O lord of the earth.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कृष्णद्वैपायनः प्रभुः। पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्तं पुत्रं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥११-८-११॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ prabhuḥ। putraśokābhisantaptaṃ putraṃ vacanam abravīt ॥11-8-11॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; तद्वचनं (tadvacanam) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कृष्णद्वैपायनः (kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्तं (putraśokābhisantaptam) - afflicted by grief for his son; पुत्रं (putram) - to the son; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having heard those words of his, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, the lord, spoke words to his son, who was afflicted by grief for his son.)
Hearing those words, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, the revered sage, addressed his son, who was overwhelmed with grief for his own son.
धृतराष्ट्र महाबाहो यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि तच्छृणु। श्रुतवानसि मेधावी धर्मार्थकुशलस्तथा ॥११-८-१२॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra mahābāho yat tvāṃ vakṣyāmi tac chṛṇu। śrutavān asi medhāvī dharmārthakuśalas tathā ॥11-8-12॥
[धृतराष्ट्र (dhṛtarāṣṭra) - Dhritarashtra; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; यत् (yat) - what; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall say; तत् (tat) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; श्रुतवान् (śrutavān) - you have heard; असि (asi) - are; मेधावी (medhāvī) - wise; धर्मार्थकुशलः (dharmārthakuśalaḥ) - skilled in righteousness and wealth; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Dhritarashtra, O mighty-armed, what I shall say to you, that listen. You have heard, are wise, skilled in righteousness and wealth, also.)
O mighty-armed Dhritarashtra, listen to what I am about to say to you. You are learned, wise, and skilled in matters of righteousness and wealth.
न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किञ्चिद्वेदितव्यं परन्तप। अनित्यतां हि मर्त्यानां विजानासि न संशयः ॥११-८-१३॥
na te'styaviditaṃ kiñcidveditavyaṃ parantapa। anityatāṃ hi martyānāṃ vijānāsi na saṃśayaḥ ॥11-8-13॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - to you; अस्ति (asti) - there is; अविदितं (aviditaṃ) - unknown; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; वेदितव्यं (veditavyaṃ) - to be known; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; अनित्यतां (anityatāṃ) - impermanence; हि (hi) - indeed; मर्त्यानां (martyānāṃ) - of mortals; विजानासि (vijānāsi) - you know; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(There is nothing unknown or to be known by you, O scorcher of foes. Indeed, you know the impermanence of mortals, there is no doubt.)
O Parantapa, there is nothing unknown or left to be known by you. You certainly know the impermanence of mortals—there is no doubt about it.
अध्रुवे जीवलोके च स्थाने वाशाश्वते सति। जीविते मरणान्ते च कस्माच्छोचसि भारत ॥११-८-१४॥
adhruve jīvaloke ca sthāne vāśāśvate sati। jīvite maraṇānte ca kasmācchocasi bhārata ॥11-8-14॥
[अध्रुवे (adhruve) - impermanent; जीवलोके (jīvaloke) - in the world of living beings; च (ca) - and; स्थाने (sthāne) - in a place; वा (vā) - or; अशाश्वते (aśāśvate) - not eternal; सति (sati) - being; जीविते (jīvite) - in life; मरणान्ते (maraṇānte) - ending in death; च (ca) - and; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; शोचसि (śocasi) - do you grieve; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(In the impermanent world of living beings, and in a place that is not eternal, being so, in life that ends in death, and why do you grieve, O Bhārata?)
O Bhārata, in this impermanent world, where life inevitably ends in death, why do you grieve?
प्रत्यक्षं तव राजेन्द्र वैरस्यास्य समुद्भवः। पुत्रं ते कारणं कृत्वा कालयोगेन कारितः ॥११-८-१५॥
pratyakṣaṃ tava rājendra vairasyāsya samudbhavaḥ। putraṃ te kāraṇaṃ kṛtvā kālayogena kāritaḥ ॥11-8-15॥
[प्रत्यक्षं (pratyakṣam) - direct; तव (tava) - your; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; वैरस्य (vairasya) - of enmity; अस्य (asya) - of this; समुद्भवः (samudbhavaḥ) - origin; पुत्रं (putram) - son; ते (te) - your; कारणं (kāraṇam) - the cause; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; कालयोगेन (kālayogena) - by the conjunction of time; कारितः (kāritaḥ) - has been brought about;]
(Direct, your, O king, of enmity, of this, origin; son, your, the cause, having made, by the conjunction of time, has been brought about.)
O King, the direct origin of this enmity has arisen; your son has been made the cause, brought about by the conjunction of time.
अवश्यं भवितव्ये च कुरूणां वैशसे नृप। कस्माच्छोचसि ताञ्शूरान्गतान्परमिकां गतिम् ॥११-८-१६॥
avaśyaṃ bhavitavye ca kurūṇāṃ vaiśase nṛpa। kasmācchocasi tāñśūrāngatānparamikāṃ gatim ॥11-8-16॥
[अवश्यं (avaśyam) - certainly; भवितव्ये (bhavitavye) - what was destined to happen; च (ca) - and; कुरूणां (kurūṇāṃ) - of the Kurus; वैशसे (vaiśase) - in the massacre; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; शोचसि (śocasi) - do you grieve; तान् (tān) - for those; शूरान् (śūrān) - heroes; गतान् (gatān) - who have attained; परमिकां (paramikāṃ) - the supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(Certainly, what was destined to happen in the massacre of the Kurus, O king; why do you grieve for those heroes who have attained the supreme state?)
O king, what was destined to happen in the massacre of the Kurus has certainly occurred; why do you grieve for those heroes who have attained the highest state?
जानता च महाबाहो विदुरेण महात्मना। यतितं सर्वयत्नेन शमं प्रति जनेश्वर ॥११-८-१७॥
jānatā ca mahābāho vidureṇa mahātmanā। yatitaṃ sarvayatnena śamaṃ prati janeśvara ॥11-8-17॥
[जानता (jānatā) - knowing; च (ca) - and; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; विदुरेण (vidureṇa) - by Vidura; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the high-souled; यतितं (yatitaṃ) - effort was made; सर्वयत्नेन (sarvayatnena) - with all effort; शमं (śamam) - for peace; प्रति (prati) - towards; जनेश्वर (janeśvara) - O lord of men;]
(Knowing this, O mighty-armed, by Vidura, the high-souled, effort was made with all effort for peace towards (you), O lord of men.)
O mighty-armed one, know that Vidura, the high-souled, made every possible effort for peace towards you, O lord of men.
न च दैवकृतो मार्गः शक्यो भूतेन केनचित्। घटतापि चिरं कालं नियन्तुमिति मे मतिः ॥११-८-१८॥
na ca daivakṛto mārgaḥ śakyo bhūtena kenacit। ghaṭatāpi ciraṃ kālaṃ niyantumiti me matiḥ ॥11-8-18॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; दैवकृतः (daivakṛtaḥ) - made by fate; मार्गः (mārgaḥ) - path; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; भूतेन (bhūtena) - by any being; केनचित् (kenacit) - by anyone; घटता (ghaṭatā) - even if attempted; अपि (api) - even; चिरं (ciraṃ) - for a long time; कालं (kālaṃ) - time; नियन्तुम् (niyantum) - to control; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
(And the path made by fate is not possible to be controlled by any being, even if attempted for a long time; thus is my opinion.)
And it is my opinion that no being can control the path made by fate, even if they try for a long time.
देवतानां हि यत्कार्यं मया प्रत्यक्षतः श्रुतम्। तत्तेऽहं सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि कथं स्थैर्यं भवेत्तव ॥११-८-१९॥
devatānāṃ hi yat kāryaṃ mayā pratyakṣataḥ śrutam। tat te'haṃ sampravakṣyāmi kathaṃ sthairyaṃ bhavet tava ॥11-8-19॥
[देवतानाम् (devatānām) - of the deities; हि (hi) - indeed; यत् (yat) - which; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; मया (mayā) - by me; प्रत्यक्षतः (pratyakṣataḥ) - directly; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि (sampravakṣyāmi) - shall explain; कथम् (katham) - how; स्थैर्यम् (sthairyam) - steadiness; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; तव (tava) - for you;]
(Indeed, the action of the deities which I have directly heard, that I shall explain to you, how steadiness may be for you.)
I will now explain to you what I have directly heard about the actions of the deities, so that you may attain steadiness.
पुराहं त्वरितो यातः सभामैन्द्रीं जितक्लमः। अपश्यं तत्र च तदा समवेतान्दिवौकसः ॥ नारदप्रमुखांश्चापि सर्वान्देवऋषींस्तथा ॥११-८-२०॥
purāhaṃ tvarito yātaḥ sabhāmaindrīṃ jitaklamaḥ। apaśyaṃ tatra ca tadā samavetāndivaukasah ॥ nāradapramukhāṃścāpi sarvān devaṛṣīṃs tathā ॥11-8-20॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - quickly; यातः (yātaḥ) - went; सभा (sabhā) - assembly; ऐन्द्रीं (aindrīṃ) - of Indra; जितक्लमः (jitaklamaḥ) - having overcome fatigue; अपश्यम् (apaśyam) - I saw; तत्र (tatra) - there; च (ca) - and; तदा (tadā) - then; समवेतान् (samavetān) - assembled; दिवौकसः (divaukasah) - the gods; नारद (nārada) - Nārada; प्रमुखान् (pramukhān) - headed by; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; देवऋषीन् (devaṛṣīn) - divine sages; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Formerly I, having overcome fatigue, quickly went to Indra's assembly. There and then I saw the gods assembled, and also all the divine sages headed by Nārada.)
Once, having overcome my fatigue, I quickly went to Indra's assembly. There I saw the gods gathered together, as well as all the divine sages led by Nārada.
तत्र चापि मया दृष्टा पृथिवी पृथिवीपते। कार्यार्थमुपसम्प्राप्ता देवतानां समीपतः ॥११-८-२१॥
tatra cāpi mayā dṛṣṭā pṛthivī pṛthivīpate। kāryārtham-upasamprāptā devatānāṃ samīpataḥ ॥11-8-21॥

अमर्षी चपलश्चापि क्रोधनो दुष्प्रसाधनः। दैवयोगात्समुत्पन्ना भ्रातरश्चास्य तादृशाः ॥११-८-२८॥

(Not indeed your Pāṇḍavas commit even a little offense, O Bhārata. Your sons, wicked-minded, by whom this earth has been destroyed.)
O Bhārata, your Pāṇḍavas have not committed even the slightest offense. It is your wicked-minded sons by whom this earth has been destroyed.
नारदेन च भद्रं ते पूर्वमेव न संशयः। युधिष्ठिरस्य समितौ राजसूये निवेदितम् ॥११-८-३२॥
nāradena ca bhadraṃ te pūrvameva na saṃśayaḥ। yudhiṣṭhirasya samitau rājasūye niveditam ॥11-8-32॥

Nārada had already declared this for your well-being, without any doubt, in the assembly of Yudhiṣṭhira at the Rājasūya sacrifice.
पाण्डवाः कौरवाश्चैव समासाद्य परस्परम्। न भविष्यन्ति कौन्तेय यत्ते कृत्यं तदाचर ॥११-८-३३॥
pāṇḍavāḥ kauravāścaiva samāsādya parasparam। na bhaviṣyanti kaunteya yatte kṛtyaṃ tadācara ॥11-8-33॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; कौरवाः (kauravāḥ) - the Kauravas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other; न (na) - not; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will remain; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; यत् (yat) - what; ते (te) - your; कृत्यम् (kṛtyam) - duty; तत् (tat) - that; आचर (ācara) - perform;]
(The Pāṇḍavas and the Kauravas, indeed, having approached each other, will not remain, O son of Kunti. What is your duty, that perform.)
O son of Kunti, the Pāṇḍavas and the Kauravas, having come face to face, will not survive. Therefore, do what you must do.
नारदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा तदाशोचन्त पाण्डवाः। एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं देवगुह्यं सनातनम् ॥११-८-३४॥
nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā tadāśocanta pāṇḍavāḥ। etatte sarvamākhyātaṃ devaguhyaṃ sanātanam ॥11-8-34॥

(Having heard the words of Nārada, then the Pāṇḍavas grieved. This all has been told to you, the eternal divine secret.)
When the Pāṇḍavas heard Nārada's words, they were filled with sorrow. All of this, the eternal divine secret, has now been revealed to you.
कथं ते शोकनाशः स्यात्प्राणेषु च दया प्रभो। स्नेहश्च पाण्डुपुत्रेषु ज्ञात्वा दैवकृतं विधिम् ॥११-८-३५॥
kathaṁ te śokanāśaḥ syāt prāṇeṣu ca dayā prabho। snehaś ca pāṇḍuputreṣu jñātvā daivakṛtaṁ vidhim ॥11-8-35॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; ते (te) - your; शोकनाशः (śokanāśaḥ) - destruction of sorrow; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; प्राणेषु (prāṇeṣu) - towards living beings; च (ca) - and; दया (dayā) - compassion; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; स्नेहः (snehaḥ) - affection; च (ca) - and; पाण्डुपुत्रेषु (pāṇḍuputreṣu) - towards the sons of Pandu; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - knowing; दैवकृतं (daivakṛtaṁ) - ordained by fate; विधिम् (vidhim) - the decree;]
(How can there be destruction of your sorrow, and compassion towards living beings, O lord, and affection towards the sons of Pandu, knowing the decree ordained by fate?)
O lord, how can your sorrow be destroyed, and how can you feel compassion for all beings and affection for the sons of Pandu, knowing that everything is ordained by fate?
एष चार्थो महाबाहो पूर्वमेव मया श्रुतः। कथितो धर्मराजस्य राजसूये क्रतूत्तमे ॥११-८-३६॥

यतितं धर्मपुत्रेण मया गुह्ये निवेदिते। अविग्रहे कौरवाणां दैवं तु बलवत्तरम् ॥११-८-३७॥
yatitaṃ dharmaputreṇa mayā guhye nivedite। avigrahe kauravāṇāṃ daivaṃ tu balavattaram ॥11-8-37॥

अनतिक्रमणीयो हि विधी राजन्कथञ्चन। कृतान्तस्य हि भूतेन स्थावरेण त्रसेन च ॥११-८-३८॥
anatikramaṇīyo hi vidhī rājan kathaṃcana। kṛtāntasya hi bhūtena sthāvareṇa trasena ca ॥11-8-38॥
[अनतिक्रमणीयः (anatikramaṇīyaḥ) - not to be transgressed; हि (hi) - indeed; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - the decree; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; कृतान्तस्य (kṛtāntasya) - of Death; हि (hi) - indeed; भूतेन (bhūtena) - by a being; स्थावरेण (sthāvareṇa) - by the immovable; त्रसेन (trasena) - by the moving; च (ca) - and;]
(The decree is indeed not to be transgressed, O king, in any way; indeed, by a being, by the immovable and by the moving, of Death.)
O king, the decree of Death cannot be transgressed in any way, whether by living beings, immovable objects, or anything else.
भवान्कर्मपरो यत्र बुद्धिश्रेष्ठश्च भारत। मुह्यते प्राणिनां ज्ञात्वा गतिं चागतिमेव च ॥११-८-३९॥
bhavān karmaparo yatra buddhiśreṣṭhaś ca bhārata। muhyate prāṇināṃ jñātvā gatiṃ cāgatim eva ca ॥11-8-39॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; कर्मपरो (karmaparaḥ) - devoted to action; यत्र (yatra) - where; बुद्धिश्रेष्ठः (buddhiśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best among the wise; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; मुह्यते (muhyate) - becomes deluded; प्राणिनाम् (prāṇinām) - of living beings; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; गतिम् (gatim) - the path; च (ca) - and; अगतिम् (agatim) - the non-path; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(You, devoted to action, where, O Bhārata, the best among the wise, becomes deluded, having known the path and the non-path indeed and, of living beings.)

त्वां तु शोकेन सन्तप्तं मुह्यमानं मुहुर्मुहुः। ज्ञात्वा युधिष्ठिरो राजा प्राणानपि परित्यजेत् ॥११-८-४०॥
tvāṃ tu śokena santaptaṃ muhyamānaṃ muhurmuhuḥ। jñātvā yudhiṣṭhiro rājā prāṇān api parityajet ॥11-8-40॥

(But knowing you, tormented with grief, bewildered again and again, King Yudhishthira would even give up his life.)
But if King Yudhishthira were to see you so repeatedly tormented and bewildered by grief, he might even give up his own life.
कृपालुर्नित्यशो वीरस्तिर्यग्योनिगतेष्वपि। स कथं त्वयि राजेन्द्र कृपां वै न करिष्यति ॥११-८-४१॥
kṛpālur nityaśo vīras tiryag-yonigateṣv api। sa kathaṃ tvayi rājendra kṛpāṃ vai na kariṣyati॥11-8-41॥

(The compassionate hero, who always shows compassion even to those born in animal wombs, how will he not show compassion to you, O king?)
The ever-compassionate hero, who extends mercy even to animals, how could he possibly not show compassion to you, O King?
मम चैव नियोगेन विधेश्चाप्यनिवर्तनात्। पाण्डवानां च कारुण्यात्प्राणान्धारय भारत ॥११-८-४२॥
mama caiva niyogena vidheścāpyanivartanāt। pāṇḍavānāṃ ca kāruṇyātprāṇāndhāraya bhārata॥11-8-42॥
[मम (mama) - my; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नियोगेन (niyogena) - by command; विधेः (vidheḥ) - of fate; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनिवर्तनात् (anivartanāt) - because of non-reversal; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - for the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; कारुण्यात् (kāruṇyāt) - out of compassion; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life; धारय (dhāraya) - sustain; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(By my command, and by the non-reversal of fate, and out of compassion for the Pāṇḍavas, O Bhārata, sustain your life.)
O Bhārata, by my command, by the inevitability of fate, and out of compassion for the Pāṇḍavas, you must sustain your life.
एवं ते वर्तमानस्य लोके कीर्तिर्भविष्यति। धर्मश्च सुमहांस्तात तप्तं स्याच्च तपश्चिरात् ॥११-८-४३॥

[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ते (te) - your; वर्तमानस्य (vartamānasya) - of the present; लोके (loke) - in the world; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - virtue; च (ca) - and; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; तात (tāta) - O dear one; तप्तं (taptaṃ) - performed (austerity); स्यात् (syāt) - would be; च (ca) - and; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; चिरात् (cirāt) - after a long time;]
(Thus, your present fame will be in the world. And, O dear one, virtue would be very great, and austerity performed after a long time.)

पुत्रशोकसमुत्पन्नं हुताशं ज्वलितं यथा। प्रज्ञाम्भसा महाराज निर्वापय सदा सदा ॥११-८-४४॥
putraśokasamutpannaṃ hutāśaṃ jvalitaṃ yathā। prajñāmbhasā mahārāja nirvāpaya sadā sadā ॥11-8-44॥
[पुत्र (putra) - son; शोक (śoka) - grief; समुत्पन्नं (samutpannaṃ) - arisen; हुताशं (hutāśam) - fire; ज्वलितं (jvalitam) - blazing; यथा (yathā) - like; प्रज्ञाम्भसा (prajñāmbhasā) - with the water of wisdom; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; निर्वापय (nirvāpaya) - extinguish; सदा सदा (sadā sadā) - always always;]
(Just as a blazing fire arisen from the grief of a son, O great king, extinguish (it) always always with the water of wisdom.)

एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं व्यासस्यामिततेजसः। मुहूर्तं समनुध्याय धृतराष्ट्रोऽभ्यभाषत ॥११-८-४५॥
etat-śrutvā tu vacanaṃ vyāsasyāmitatejasaḥ। muhūrtaṃ samanudhyāya dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhyabhāṣata ॥11-8-45॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; व्यासस्य (vyāsasya) - of Vyāsa; अमिततेजसः (amitatejasaḥ) - of immeasurable energy; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; समनुध्याय (samanudhyāya) - having reflected; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - spoke;]
(Having heard these words of Vyāsa of immeasurable energy, but having reflected for a moment, Dhṛtarāṣṭra spoke.)
After hearing these words from Vyāsa, who possessed immeasurable energy, Dhṛtarāṣṭra paused for a moment and then spoke.
महताशोकजालेन प्रणुन्नोऽस्मि द्विजोत्तम। नात्मानमवबुध्यामि मुह्यमानो मुहुर्मुहुः ॥११-८-४६॥
mahatā śokajālena praṇunno'smi dvijottama। nātmānam avabudhyāmi muhyamāno muhurmuhuḥ ॥11-8-46॥
[महत् (mahat) - great; आ (ā) - by; शोक (śoka) - grief; जालेन (jālena) - by the net; प्रणुन्नः (praṇunnaḥ) - afflicted; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of the twice-born; न (na) - not; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; अवबुध्यामि (avabudhyāmi) - do I perceive; मुह्यमानः (muhyamānaḥ) - being deluded; मuhur् (muhur) - again; मuhur् (muhuḥ) - and again;]
(O best of the twice-born, I am afflicted by the great net of grief; being deluded again and again, I do not perceive myself.)

idaṃ tu vacanaṃ śrutvā tava daivaniyogajam। dhārayiṣyāmyahaṃ prāṇānyatiṣye ca na śocitum ॥11-8-47॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तव (tava) - your; दैव (daiva) - divine; नियोग (niyoga) - command; जम् (jam) - born; धारयिष्यामि (dhārayiṣyāmi) - I shall sustain; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; अतिष्ये (atiṣye) - I shall survive; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; शोचितुम् (śocitum) - to grieve;]
(But having heard this speech of yours, born of divine command, I shall sustain my life-breaths and survive, and not grieve.)

(Having heard these words, Vyāsa, the son of Satyavatī, just there disappeared, O king, from Dhṛtarāṣṭra.)
