(When the venerable Vyāsa had gone, what did King Dhṛtarāṣṭra do, O best of Brāhmaṇas? That you ought to explain to me.)
O best of Brāhmaṇas, after the venerable Vyāsa had departed, what did King Dhṛtarāṣṭra do? Please explain that to me.

एतच्छ्रुत्वा नरश्रेष्ठ चिरं ध्यात्वा त्वचेतनः। सञ्जयं योजयेत्युक्त्वा विदुरं प्रत्यभाषत ॥११-९-२॥
etat-śrutvā nara-śreṣṭha ciraṃ dhyātvā tv acetanaḥ। sañjayaṃ yojayet ity uktvā viduraṃ pratyabhāṣata ॥11-9-2॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; नरश्रेष्ठ (nara-śreṣṭha) - O best of men; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; ध्यात्वा (dhyātvā) - having meditated; त्व (tva) - you; अचेतनः (acetanaḥ) - unconscious; सञ्जयम् (sañjayam) - Sanjaya; योजयेत् (yojayet) - should be connected; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; विदुरम् (viduram) - Vidura; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed;]
(Having heard this, O best of men, having meditated for a long time, you being unconscious, having said thus "Sanjaya should be connected", addressed Vidura.)

क्षिप्रमानय गान्धारीं सर्वाश्च भरतस्त्रियः। वधूं कुन्तीमुपादाय याश्चान्यास्तत्र योषितः ॥११-९-३॥
kṣipram ānaya gāndhārīṃ sarvāś ca bharata-striyaḥ। vadhūṃ kuntīm upādāya yāś ca anyāḥ tatra yoṣitaḥ॥11-9-3॥

एवमुक्त्वा स धर्मात्मा विदुरं धर्मवित्तमम्। शोकविप्रहतज्ञानो यानमेवान्वपद्यत ॥११-९-४॥

गान्धारी चैव शोकार्ता भर्तुर्वचनचोदिता। सह कुन्त्या यतो राजा सह स्त्रीभिरुपाद्रवत् ॥११-९-५॥

(They, having approached the king, greatly filled with grief, having addressed each other, indeed went, greatly cried aloud then.)
Those women, deeply afflicted with grief, approached the king, spoke to each other, and then cried out loudly together.
ताः समाश्वासयत्क्षत्ता ताभ्यश्चार्ततरः स्वयम्। अश्रुकण्ठीः समारोप्य ततोऽसौ निर्ययौ पुरात् ॥११-९-७॥
tāḥ samāśvāsayat kṣattā tābhyaś cārtataraḥ svayam। aśrukaṇṭhīḥ samāropya tato'sau niryayau purāt ॥11-9-7॥

(Those (women) the charioteer consoled; to them and (being) more afflicted himself, having embraced (them) with throats choked with tears, then he departed from the city.)

ततः प्रणादः सञ्जज्ञे सर्वेषु कुरुवेश्मसु। आकुमारं पुरं सर्वमभवच्छोककर्शितम् ॥११-९-८॥
tataḥ praṇādaḥ sañjajñe sarveṣu kuruveśmasu। ākumāraṃ puraṃ sarvam abhavac chokakarśitam ॥11-9-8॥

(Then a loud sound arose in all the houses of the Kurus. The entire city, up to the princes, became emaciated with grief.)

अदृष्टपूर्वा या नार्यः पुरा देवगणैरपि। पृथग्जनेन दृश्यन्त तास्तदा निहतेश्वराः ॥११-९-९॥
adṛṣṭapūrvā yā nāryaḥ purā devagaṇair api। pṛthagjanena dṛśyanta tās tadā nihateśvarāḥ ॥11-9-9॥

प्रकीर्य केशान्सुशुभान्भूषणान्यवमुच्य च। एकवस्त्रधरा नार्यः परिपेतुरनाथवत् ॥११-९-१०॥

(Having scattered their beautiful hair and cast off their ornaments, and wearing only a single garment, the women fell down like those without protectors.)
The women, having let their beautiful hair loose and removed their ornaments, dressed in a single garment, fell down as if they were helpless and unprotected.
श्वेतपर्वतरूपेभ्यो गृहेभ्यस्तास्त्वपाक्रमन्। गुहाभ्य इव शैलानां पृषत्यो हतयूथपाः ॥११-९-११॥
śvetaparvatarūpebhyo gṛhebhyastāstvapākraman। guhābhya iva śailānāṃ pṛṣatyo hatayūthapāḥ ॥11-9-11॥
[श्वेतपर्वतरूपेभ्यः (śvetaparvatarūpebhyaḥ) - from the abodes resembling white mountains; गृहेभ्यः (gṛhebhyaḥ) - from the houses; ताः (tāḥ) - they; त्वम् (tvam) - then; अपाक्रमन् (apākraman) - departed; गुहाभ्यः (guhābhyaḥ) - from the caves; इव (iva) - like; शैलानाम् (śailānām) - of the mountains; पृषत्यः (pṛṣatyaḥ) - the female deer; हतयूथपाः (hatayūthapāḥ) - whose leaders were killed;]
(From the abodes resembling white mountains, from the houses, they then departed; like from the caves of the mountains, the female deer whose leaders were killed.)
They left their homes, which looked like white mountains; just as female deer, whose leaders have been slain, flee from the caves of the mountains.
तान्युदीर्णानि नारीणां तदा वृन्दान्यनेकशः। शोकार्तान्यद्रवन्राजन्किशोरीणामिवाङ्गने ॥११-९-१२॥
tānyudīrṇāni nārīṇāṃ tadā vṛndānyanekaśaḥ| śokārtānyadravanrājankiśorīṇāmivāṅgane ॥11-9-12॥
[तानि (tāni) - those; उदीर्णानि (udīrṇāni) - aroused; नारीणां (nārīṇām) - of women; तदा (tadā) - then; वृन्दानि (vṛndāni) - groups; अनेकशः (anekaśaḥ) - in many ways; शोक-आर्तानि (śoka-ārtāni) - afflicted by grief; अद्रवन् (adravan) - melted; राजन् (rājan) - O king; किशोरीणाम् (kiśorīṇām) - of young girls; इव (iva) - like; अङ्गने (aṅgane) - in the courtyard;]
(Those aroused groups of women then, in many ways, afflicted by grief, melted, O king, like the young girls in the courtyard.)
O king, at that time, those groups of women, deeply afflicted by grief, melted away in many ways, just like young girls in the courtyard.
प्रगृह्य बाहून्क्रोशन्त्यः पुत्रान्भ्रातॄन्पितॄनपि। दर्शयन्तीव ता ह स्म युगान्ते लोकसङ्क्षयम् ॥११-९-१३॥
pragṛhya bāhūn krośantyaḥ putrān bhrātṝn pitṝn api। darśayantīva tā ha sma yugānte lokasaṅkṣayam ॥11-9-13॥
[प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having seized; बाहून् (bāhūn) - arms; क्रोशन्त्यः (krośantyaḥ) - crying out; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - fathers; अपि (api) - also; दर्शयन्ति (darśayanti) - showing; इव (iva) - as if; ता (tā) - they; ह (ha) - indeed; स्म (sma) - formerly; युगान्ते (yugānte) - at the end of an age; लोकसङ्क्षयम् (lokasaṅkṣayam) - destruction of the world;]
(Having seized their arms, crying out for sons, brothers, and fathers also, they indeed, as if showing the destruction of the world at the end of an age, formerly.)

विलपन्त्यो रुदन्त्यश्च धावमानास्ततस्ततः। शोकेनाभ्याहतज्ञानाः कर्तव्यं न प्रजज्ञिरे ॥११-९-१४॥

व्रीडां जग्मुः पुरा याः स्म सखीनामपि योषितः। ता एकवस्त्रा निर्लज्जाः श्वश्रूणां पुरतोऽभवन् ॥११-९-१५॥
vrīḍāṃ jagmuḥ purā yāḥ sma sakhīnām api yoṣitaḥ. tā ekavastrā nirlajjāḥ śvaśrūṇāṃ purato 'bhavan ॥11-9-15॥

परस्परं सुसूक्ष्मेषु शोकेष्वाश्वासयन्स्म याः। ताः शोकविह्वला राजन्नुपैक्षन्त परस्परम् ॥११-९-१६॥

ताभिः परिवृतो राजा रुदतीभिः सहस्रशः। निर्ययौ नगराद्दीनस्तूर्णमायोधनं प्रति ॥११-९-१७॥
tābhiḥ parivṛto rājā rudatībhiḥ sahasraśaḥ। niryayau nagarāddīnastūrṇamāyodhanaṃ prati ॥11-9-17॥

[शिल्पिनः (śilpinaḥ) - artisans; वणिजः (vaṇijaḥ) - merchants; वैश्याः (vaiśyāḥ) - Vaiśyas; सर्वकर्म-उपजीविनः (sarva-karma-upajīvinaḥ) - living by all kinds of work; ते (te) - they; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - the king; पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - having placed at the front; निर्ययुः (niryayuḥ) - departed; नगरात् (nagarāt) - from the city; बहिः (bahiḥ) - outside;]
(Artisans, merchants, Vaiśyas, those living by all kinds of work—they, having placed the king at the front, departed from the city to the outside.)
The artisans, merchants, Vaiśyas, and all those who lived by various occupations, led by the king, left the city and went outside.
तासां विक्रोशमानानामार्तानां कुरुसङ्क्षये। प्रादुरासीन्महाञ्शब्दो व्यथयन्भुवनान्युत ॥११-९-१९॥
tāsāṃ vikrośamānānām ārtānāṃ kuru-saṅkṣaye। prādurāsīn mahāñ śabdo vyathayan bhuvanāni uta ॥11-9-19॥
[तासां (tāsāṃ) - of those; विक्रोशमानानाम् (vikrośamānānām) - crying out; आर्तानाम् (ārtānām) - distressed; कुरुसङ्क्षये (kuru-saṅkṣaye) - in the destruction of the Kurus; प्रादुरासीन् (prādurāsīn) - arose; महान् (mahān) - great; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; व्यथयन् (vyathayan) - distressing; भुवनानि (bhuvanāni) - the worlds; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Of those distressed ones crying out in the destruction of the Kurus, indeed a great sound arose, distressing the worlds.)
As those distressed women cried out during the destruction of the Kurus, a great sound arose, shaking the worlds.
युगान्तकाले सम्प्राप्ते भूतानां दह्यतामिव। अभावः स्यादयं प्राप्त इति भूतानि मेनिरे ॥११-९-२०॥
yugāntakāle samprāpte bhūtānāṃ dahyatām iva। abhāvaḥ syād ayaṃ prāpta iti bhūtāni menire ॥11-9-20॥
[युग-अन्त-काले (yuga-anta-kāle) - at the end of an age; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; दह्यताम् (dahyatām) - of burning; इव (iva) - as if; अभावः (abhāvaḥ) - non-existence; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; अयम् (ayam) - this; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has come; इति (iti) - thus; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - the beings; मेनिरे (menire) - thought;]
(At the end of an age, when destruction arrives, as if beings are being burned, they thought thus: 'This non-existence has come.')

भृशमुद्विग्नमनसस्ते पौराः कुरुसङ्क्षये। प्राक्रोशन्त महाराज स्वनुरक्तास्तदा भृशम् ॥११-९-२१॥
bhṛśam-udvigna-manasas-te paurāḥ kuru-saṅkṣaye। prākrośanta mahārāja sv-anuraktās-tadā bhṛśam ॥11-9-21॥
