Pancharatra-Ext and Core: Kripa, Ashwatthama and Kritaverma meet Dhritarashtra and Gandhari on their way, inform about the massacre, and they depart fearing the Pandavas, each parting ways.

क्रोशमात्रं ततो गत्वा ददृशुस्तान्महारथान्। शारद्वतं कृपं द्रौणिं कृतवर्माणमेव च ॥११-१०-१॥
krośamātraṃ tato gatvā dadṛśus tān mahārathān। śāradvataṃ kṛpaṃ drauṇiṃ kṛtavarmāṇam eva ca ॥11-10-1॥
[क्रोशमात्रम् (krośamātram) - a krosha distance; (about 2 miles); ततः (tataḥ) - then; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; तान् (tān) - those; महारथान् (mahārathān) - great chariot-warriors; शारद्वतम् (śāravatam) - Śaradvat's son (Kripa); कृपम् (kṛpam) - Kripa; द्रौणिम् (drauṇim) - Drona's son (Ashvatthama); कृतवर्माणम् (kṛtavarmāṇam) - Kritavarma; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Having gone a krosha distance from there, they saw those great chariot-warriors—Śaradvat's son Kripa, Drona's son (Ashvatthama), Kritavarma, indeed, and also.)
After traveling about a krosha from there, they saw the great chariot-warriors: Kripa, the son of Śaradvat; Ashvatthama, the son of Drona; and Kritavarma.
ते तु दृष्ट्वैव राजानं प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम्। अश्रुकण्ठा विनिःश्वस्य रुदन्तमिदमब्रुवन् ॥११-१०-२॥
te tu dṛṣṭvaiva rājānaṃ prajñācakṣuṣam īśvaram। aśrukaṇṭhā viniḥśvasya rudantam idam abruvan ॥11-10-2॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - just; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; प्रज्ञाचक्षुषम् (prajñācakṣuṣam) - with the eye of wisdom; ईश्वरम् (īśvaram) - the lord; अश्रुकण्ठा (aśrukaṇṭhā) - with throats choked with tears; विनिःश्वस्य (viniḥśvasya) - having sighed deeply; रुदन्तम् (rudantam) - weeping; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said;]
(They but having just seen the king, the lord with the eye of wisdom, with throats choked with tears, having sighed deeply, weeping, this said:)
But when they saw the king, the lord endowed with the eye of wisdom, their throats choked with tears; sighing deeply and weeping, they said this.
पुत्रस्तव महाराज कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम्। गतः सानुचरो राजञ्शक्रलोकं महीपतिः ॥११-१०-३॥
putras tava mahārāja kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram। gataḥ sānucaro rājañ chakralokaṃ mahīpatiḥ ॥11-10-3॥
[पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तव (tava) - your; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; कर्म (karma) - deed; सुदुष्करम् (suduṣkaram) - very difficult; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone; सानुचरः (sānucaraḥ) - with his attendants; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शक्रलोकम् (śakralokam) - to the world of Indra; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the lord of the earth;]
(Your son, O great king, having performed a very difficult deed, has gone with his attendants, O king, to the world of Indra, the lord of the earth.)
O great king, your son, after accomplishing a most difficult task, has departed with his followers to Indra's realm.
दुर्योधनबलान्मुक्ता वयमेव त्रयो रथाः। सर्वमन्यत्परिक्षीणं सैन्यं ते भरतर्षभ ॥११-१०-४॥
duryodhanabalānmuktā vayam eva trayo rathāḥ। sarvam anyat parikṣīṇaṃ sainyaṃ te bharatarṣabha ॥11-10-4॥
[दुर्योधन (duryodhana) - Duryodhana; बलात् (balāt) - from the force; मुक्ताः (muktāḥ) - freed; वयम् (vayam) - we; एव (eva) - indeed; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; रथाः (rathāḥ) - chariot-warriors; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; परिक्षीणम् (parikṣīṇam) - diminished; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - army; ते (te) - your; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Freed from the force of Duryodhana, we alone, three chariot-warriors. All the rest of your army, O best of the Bharatas, is diminished.)
O best of the Bharatas, only we three chariot-warriors have escaped from Duryodhana's force; all the rest of your army has been destroyed.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा राजानं कृपः शारद्वतस्तदा। गान्धारीं पुत्रशोकार्तामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥११-१०-५॥
ityevamuktvā rājānaṃ kṛpaḥ śāradvatas tadā। gāndhārīṃ putraśokārtām idaṃ vacanam abravīt ॥11-10-5॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; शारद्वतः (śāradvataḥ) - son of Śaradvat; तदा (tadā) - then; गान्धारीम् (gāndhārīm) - Gāndhārī; पुत्रशोकārtाम् (putraśokārtām) - afflicted with grief for her son; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Thus having spoken to the king, Kṛpa, the son of Śaradvat, then spoke this speech to Gāndhārī, who was afflicted with grief for her son.)
Having thus addressed the king, Kṛpa, the son of Śaradvat, then spoke these words to Gāndhārī, who was overwhelmed with grief for her son.
अभीता युध्यमानास्ते घ्नन्तः शत्रुगणान्बहून्। वीरकर्माणि कुर्वाणाः पुत्रास्ते निधनं गताः ॥११-१०-६॥
abhītā yudhyamānās te ghnantaḥ śatrugaṇān bahūn। vīrakarmāṇi kurvāṇāḥ putrās te nidhanaṃ gatāḥ ॥11-10-6॥
[अभीता (abhītā) - fearless; युध्यमानाः (yudhyamānāḥ) - fighting; ते (te) - they; घ्नन्तः (ghnantaḥ) - slaying; शत्रुगणान् (śatrugaṇān) - hosts of enemies; बहून् (bahūn) - many; वीरकर्माणि (vīrakarmāṇi) - heroic deeds; कुर्वाणाः (kurvāṇāḥ) - performing; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; ते (te) - your; निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - death; गताः (gatāḥ) - attained;]
(Fearless, fighting, they slaying many hosts of enemies, performing heroic deeds, your sons attained death.)
Your sons, fearless and fighting, slew many hosts of enemies and, performing heroic deeds, met their death.
ध्रुवं सम्प्राप्य लोकांस्ते निर्मलाञ्शस्त्रनिर्जितान्। भास्वरं देहमास्थाय विहरन्त्यमरा इव ॥११-१०-७॥
dhruvaṃ samprāpya lokāṃs te nirmalāñ śastranirjitān। bhāsvaraṃ deham āsthāya viharanti amarā iva ॥11-10-7॥
[ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - permanent; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having attained; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; ते (te) - they; निर्मलान् (nirmalān) - pure; शस्त्र-निर्जितान् (śastra-nirjitān) - conquered by weapons; भास्वरम् (bhāsvaram) - radiant; देहम् (deham) - body; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having assumed; विहरन्ति (viharanti) - they roam; अमरा (amarā) - immortals; इव (iva) - like;]
(Having attained the permanent, pure worlds conquered by weapons, assuming a radiant body, they roam like immortals.)
Having reached the eternal, pure worlds won by valor, they move about in radiant bodies, like the immortals.
न हि कश्चिद्धि शूराणां युध्यमानः पराङ्मुखः। शस्त्रेण निधनं प्राप्तो न च कश्चित्कृताञ्जलिः ॥११-१०-८॥
na hi kaścid dhi śūrāṇāṃ yudhyamānaḥ parāṅmukhaḥ। śastreṇa nidhanaṃ prāpto na ca kaścit kṛtāñjaliḥ॥11-10-8॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; हि (dhi) - indeed; शूराणां (śūrāṇām) - of the heroes; युध्यमानः (yudhyamānaḥ) - fighting; पराङ्मुखः (parāṅmukhaḥ) - turned away (from battle); शस्त्रेण (śastreṇa) - by weapon; निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - death; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands;]
(Not indeed has any of the heroes, fighting, turned away (from battle), attained death by weapon; nor has any with folded hands.)
Indeed, none of the heroes who fought and turned away from battle has ever met death by weapon, nor has anyone with folded hands (in supplication) done so.
एतां तां क्षत्रियस्याहुः पुराणां परमां गतिम्। शस्त्रेण निधनं सङ्ख्ये तान्न शोचितुमर्हसि ॥११-१०-९॥
etāṃ tāṃ kṣatriyasyāhuḥ purāṇāṃ paramāṃ gatim। śastreṇa nidhanaṃ saṅkhye tān na śocitum arhasi ॥11-10-9॥
[एताम् (etām) - this; ताम् (tām) - that; क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - of a kṣatriya; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; पुराणाम् (purāṇām) - ancient; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - path; शस्त्रेण (śastreṇa) - by weapon; निधनम् (nidhanaṃ) - death; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; तान् (tān) - them; न (na) - not; शोचितुम् (śocitum) - to grieve; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(This, that, of a kṣatriya, they say, ancient, supreme, path. By weapon, death, in battle, them, not, to grieve, you ought.)
This is said to be the ancient and supreme path of a kṣatriya: death in battle by weapons. You ought not to grieve for them.
न चापि शत्रवस्तेषामृध्यन्ते राज्ञि पाण्डवाः। शृणु यत्कृतमस्माभिरश्वत्थामपुरोगमैः ॥११-१०-१०॥
na cāpi śatravasteṣāmṛdhyante rājñi pāṇḍavāḥ। śṛṇu yatkṛtamasmābhiraśvatthāmapurogamaiḥ ॥11-10-10॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शत्रवः (śatravaḥ) - enemies; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; ऋध्यन्ते (ṛdhyante) - prosper; राज्ञि (rājñi) - O queen; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; यत् (yat) - what; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; अश्वत्थाम (aśvatthāma) - Aśvatthāma; पुरोगमैः (purogamaiḥ) - with as leader;]
(Not and also the enemies of them prosper, O queen, the Pāṇḍavas. Hear what done by us with Aśvatthāma as leader.)
O queen, the Pāṇḍavas, who are their enemies, do not prosper. Listen to what we have done with Aśvatthāma as our leader.
अधर्मेण हतं श्रुत्वा भीमसेनेन ते सुतम्। सुप्तं शिबिरमाविश्य पाण्डूनां कदनं कृतम् ॥११-१०-११॥
adharmeṇa hataṃ śrutvā bhīmasenena te sutam। suptaṃ śibiram āviśya pāṇḍūnāṃ kadanaṃ kṛtam ॥11-10-11॥
[अधर्मेण (adharmeṇa) - by unrighteousness; हतं (hataṃ) - killed; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhimasena; ते (te) - your; सुतम् (sutam) - son; सुप्तं (suptaṃ) - sleeping; शिबिरम् (śibiram) - camp; आविश्य (āviśya) - having entered; पाण्डूनां (pāṇḍūnāṃ) - of the Pandavas; कदनं (kadanam) - slaughter; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done;]
(Having heard that your son was killed unrighteously by Bhimasena, (he) entered the camp while (they were) sleeping and performed the slaughter of the Pandavas.)
Hearing that your son was killed unrighteously by Bhimasena, he entered the camp at night while they slept and carried out the massacre of the Pandavas.
पाञ्चाला निहताः सर्वे धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमाः। द्रुपदस्यात्मजाश्चैव द्रौपदेयाश्च पातिताः ॥११-१०-१२॥
pāñcālā nihatāḥ sarve dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogamāḥ। drupadasyātmajāścaiva draupadeyāśca pātitāḥ ॥11-10-12॥
[पाञ्चाला (pāñcālāḥ) - the Pāñcālas; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - slain; सर्वे (sarve) - all; धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमाः (dhṛṣṭadyumna-purogamāḥ) - headed by Dhṛṣṭadyumna; द्रुपदस्य (drupadasya) - of Drupada; आत्मजाः (ātmajāḥ) - sons; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; द्रौपदेयाः (draupadeyāḥ) - the sons of Draupadī; च (ca) - and; पातिताः (pātitāḥ) - fallen;]
(The Pāñcālas, all slain, headed by Dhṛṣṭadyumna; the sons of Drupada and indeed the sons of Draupadī also have fallen.)
All the Pāñcālas, led by Dhṛṣṭadyumna, have been slain; the sons of Drupada and the sons of Draupadī too have fallen.
तथा विशसनं कृत्वा पुत्रशत्रुगणस्य ते। प्राद्रवाम रणे स्थातुं न हि शक्यामहे त्रयः ॥११-१०-१३॥
tathā viśasanaṃ kṛtvā putraśatrugaṇasya te। prādravāma raṇe sthātuṃ na hi śakyāmahe trayaḥ॥11-10-13॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; विशसनम् (viśasanam) - slaughter; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; पुत्रशत्रुगणस्य (putraśatrugaṇasya) - of the host of your son's enemies; ते (te) - your; प्राद्रवाम (prādravāma) - we fled; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to stand; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्यामहे (śakyāmahe) - were able; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three (of us);]
(Thus, having slaughtered the host of your son's enemies, we three were not indeed able to stand in battle and fled.)
Thus, after slaying the host of your son's enemies, the three of us were unable to stand our ground in battle and fled.
ते हि शूरा महेष्वासाः क्षिप्रमेष्यन्ति पाण्डवाः। अमर्षवशमापन्ना वैरं प्रतिजिहीर्षवः ॥११-१०-१४॥
te hi śūrā maheṣvāsāḥ kṣiprameṣyanti pāṇḍavāḥ। amarṣavaśamāpannā vairaṃ pratijihīrṣavaḥ ॥11-10-14॥
[ते (te) - they; हि (hi) - indeed; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; महेष्वासाः (maheṣvāsāḥ) - great archers; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; एष्यन्ति (eṣyanti) - will come; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; अमर्षवशम् (amarṣavaśam) - under the sway of anger; आपन्नाः (āpannāḥ) - fallen into; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; प्रतिजिहीर्षवः (pratijihīrṣavaḥ) - desiring to retaliate;]
(They indeed, the heroes, the great archers, the Pāṇḍavas, will quickly come, having fallen under the sway of anger, desiring to retaliate the enmity.)
Indeed, those heroic and mighty-armed Pāṇḍavas, overcome by anger and eager to retaliate the enmity, will soon arrive.
निहतानात्मजाञ्श्रुत्वा प्रमत्तान्पुरुषर्षभाः। निनीषन्तः पदं शूराः क्षिप्रमेव यशस्विनि ॥११-१०-१५॥
nihatān-ātmajān-śrutvā pramattān-puruṣarṣabhāḥ। ninīṣantaḥ padaṃ śūrāḥ kṣipram-eva yaśasvini ॥11-10-15॥
[निहतान् (nihatān) - slain; आत्मजान् (ātmajān) - sons; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; प्रमत्तान् (pramattān) - careless; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; निनीषन्तः (ninīṣantaḥ) - wishing to go; पदं (padaṃ) - to the abode; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; एव (eva) - indeed; यशस्विनि (yaśasvini) - O illustrious one;]
(Having heard that their sons were slain, the bulls among men, the heroes, wishing to go to the abode, quickly indeed, O illustrious one, (set out).)
O illustrious one, when the heroes, the foremost among men, heard that their sons had been slain due to carelessness, they quickly resolved to go to the place.
पाण्डूनां किल्बिषं कृत्वा संस्थातुं नोत्सहामहे। अनुजानीहि नो राज्ञि मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ॥११-१०-१६॥
pāṇḍūnāṃ kilbiṣaṃ kṛtvā saṃsthātuṃ notsahāmahe. anujānīhi no rājñi mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ ॥11-10-16॥
[पाण्डूनाम् (pāṇḍūnām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; किल्बिषम् (kilbiṣam) - sin; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having committed; संस्थातुम् (saṃsthātum) - to remain (here); न (na) - not; उत्सहामहे (utsahāmahe) - we are able; अनुजानीहि (anujānīhi) - permit; नः (naḥ) - us; राज्ञि (rājñi) - O queen; मा (mā) - do not; च (ca) - and; शोके (śoke) - in grief; मनः (manaḥ) - your mind; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - make;]
(Having committed sin against the Pāṇḍavas, we are not able to remain (here). Permit us, O queen, and do not let your mind be in grief.)
We are unable to stay here after committing a sin against the Pāṇḍavas. Please allow us to go, O queen, and do not let your mind be troubled by grief.
राजंस्त्वमनुजानीहि धैर्यमातिष्ठ चोत्तमम्। निष्ठान्तं पश्य चापि त्वं क्षत्रधर्मं च केवलम् ॥११-१०-१७॥
rājamstvamanujānīhi dhairyamātiṣṭha cottamam। niṣṭhāntaṃ paśya cāpi tvaṃ kṣatradharmaṃ ca kevalam ॥11-10-17॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनुजानीहि (anujānīhi) - permit; धैर्यम् (dhairyam) - courage; आतिष्ठ (ātiṣṭha) - hold; च (ca) - and; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; निष्ठान्तम् (niṣṭhāntam) - final duty; पश्य (paśya) - see; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; त्वम् (tvam) - you; क्षत्रधर्मम् (kṣatradharmam) - the duty of a warrior; च (ca) - and; केवलम् (kevalam) - alone;]
(O king, you permit, hold courage and the supreme. See also, you, the final duty and the duty of a warrior alone.)
O king, permit it and hold on to supreme courage. Also, see that your final duty is only the duty of a warrior.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा राजानं कृत्वा चाभिप्रदक्षिणम्। कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च द्रोणपुत्रश्च भारत ॥११-१०-१८॥
ityevamuktvā rājānaṃ kṛtvā cābhipradakṣiṇam| kṛpaś ca kṛtavarmā ca droṇaputraś ca bhārata ॥11-10-18॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; च (ca) - and; अभिप्रदक्षिणम् (abhipradakṣiṇam) - having circumambulated; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; कृतवर्मा (kṛtavarmā) - Kṛtavarmā; च (ca) - and; द्रोणपुत्रः (droṇaputraḥ) - the son of Droṇa; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Thus, having spoken in this way to the king and having circumambulated, Kṛpa, Kṛtavarmā, and the son of Droṇa, O Bhārata, (did so).)
O Bhārata, after saying this to the king and circumambulating him, Kṛpa, Kṛtavarmā, and the son of Droṇa acted accordingly.
अवेक्षमाणा राजानं धृतराष्ट्रं मनीषिणम्। गङ्गामनु महात्मानस्तूर्णमश्वानचोदयन् ॥११-१०-१९॥
avekṣamāṇā rājānaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ manīṣiṇam। gaṅgāmanu mahātmānastūrṇamaśvānacodayan ॥11-10-19॥
[अवेक्षमाणा (avekṣamāṇā) - looking at; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; मनीषिणम् (manīṣiṇam) - the wise; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Ganga; अनु (anu) - after; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - the great souls; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; अचोदयन् (acodayan) - urged on;]
(Looking at the king Dhritarashtra, the wise, the great souls quickly urged the horses after Ganga.)

(Having withdrawn, but they, O king, all indeed great chariot-warriors, having addressed each other, distressed, in three groups, they departed then.)

जगाम हास्तिनपुरं कृपः शारद्वतस्तदा। स्वमेव राष्ट्रं हार्दिक्यो द्रौणिर्व्यासाश्रमं ययौ ॥११-१०-२१॥
jagāma hāstinapuraṃ kṛpaḥ śāradvatastadā। svameva rāṣṭraṃ hārdikyo drauṇirvyāsāśramaṃ yayau ॥11-10-21॥

At that time, Kṛpa, the son of Śaradvat, went to Hastinapura; Hārdikya returned to his own kingdom; and Drauṇi went to the hermitage of Vyāsa.
एवं ते प्रययुर्वीरा वीक्षमाणाः परस्परम्। भयार्ताः पाण्डुपुत्राणामागस्कृत्वा महात्मनाम् ॥११-१०-२२॥
evaṃ te prayayur vīrā vīkṣamāṇāḥ parasparam | bhayārtāḥ pāṇḍu-putrāṇām āgas kṛtvā mahātmanām ||11-10-22||

(Thus they, the heroes, departed, looking at each other, afflicted by fear, having committed an offense against the sons of Pandu, the great-souled ones.)
Thus, the heroes departed, glancing at each other in fear, having wronged the noble sons of Pandu.
समेत्य वीरा राजानं तदा त्वनुदिते रवौ। विप्रजग्मुर्महाराज यथेच्छकमरिंदमाः ॥११-१०-२३॥
sametya vīrā rājānaṃ tadā tvanudite ravau। viprajagmurmahārāja yathecchakamariṃdamāḥ ॥11-10-23॥
