Core and Pancharatra: Yudhishthira along with his brothers and Draupadi meets the grieving Yudhishthira who has come to the war zone. Krishna puts an iron idol in front of the grieving and angered Dhritarashtra, who crushes it with his strength.

घातयित्वा कथं द्रोणं भीष्मं चापि पितामहम्। मनस्तेऽभून्महाबाहो हत्वा चापि जयद्रथम् ॥११-११-८॥

किं नु राज्येन ते कार्यं पितॄन्भ्रातॄनपश्यतः। अभिमन्युं च दुर्धर्षं द्रौपदेयांश्च भारत ॥११-११-९॥

अतीत्य ता महाबाहुः क्रोशन्तीः कुररीरिव। ववन्दे पितरं ज्येष्ठं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥११-११-१०॥

तस्य सङ्कल्पमाज्ञाय भीमं प्रत्यशुभं हरिः। भीममाक्षिप्य पाणिभ्यां प्रददौ भीममायसम् ॥११-११-१५॥

sa tu kopaṃ samutsṛjya gatamanyurmahāmanāḥ। hā hā bhīmeti cukrośa bhūyaḥ śokasamanvitaḥ ॥11-11-21॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; कोपं (kopaṃ) - anger; समुत्सृज्य (samutsṛjya) - having completely abandoned; गतमन्युः (gatamanyuḥ) - whose wrath had departed; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; हा हा (hā hā) - alas! alas!; भीम (bhīma) - Bhīma; इति (iti) - thus; चुक्रोश (cukrośa) - cried out; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; शोकसमन्वितः (śokasamanvitaḥ) - filled with grief;]
(He, but, anger, having completely abandoned, whose wrath had departed, great-minded, alas! alas!, Bhīma, thus, cried out, again, filled with grief.)
But he, having completely abandoned anger, his wrath departed, the great-minded one, cried out again, "Alas! Alas! Bhīma!" filled with grief.
तं विदित्वा गतक्रोधं भीमसेनवधार्दितम्। वासुदेवो वरः पुंसामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥११-११-२२॥
taṃ viditvā gatakrodhaṃ bhīmasenavadhārditam। vāsudevo varaḥ puṃsām idaṃ vacanam abravīt ॥11-11-22॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; गतक्रोधं (gatakrodham) - whose anger had departed; भीमसेन-वध-आर्दितम् (bhīmasena-vadha-ārditam) - afflicted by the killing of Bhīmasena; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; पुंसाम् (puṃsām) - of men; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having known him, whose anger had departed and who was afflicted by the killing of Bhīmasena, Vāsudeva, the best of men, spoke this speech.)
Vāsudeva, the best among men, seeing him whose anger had subsided and who was distressed by Bhīmasena's killing, spoke these words.
मा शुचो धृतराष्ट्र त्वं नैष भीमस्त्वया हतः। आयसी प्रतिमा ह्येषा त्वया राजन्निपातिता ॥११-११-२३॥
mā śuco dhṛtarāṣṭra tvaṃ naiṣa bhīmas tvayā hataḥ। āyasī pratimā hyeṣā tvayā rājannipātitā ॥11-11-23॥
[मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; धृतराष्ट्र (dhṛtarāṣṭra) - Dhritarashtra; त्वम् (tvam) - you; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; आयसी (āyasī) - iron; प्रतिमा (pratimā) - image; हि (hi) - indeed; एषा (eṣā) - this; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; निपातिता (nipātitā) - struck down;]
(Do not grieve, Dhritarashtra, you; this is not Bhima killed by you. This is indeed an iron image struck down by you, O king.)
Do not grieve, Dhritarashtra. It was not Bhima whom you killed; it was an iron image that you struck down, O king.
त्वां क्रोधवशमापन्नं विदित्वा भरतर्षभ। मयापकृष्टः कौन्तेयो मृत्योर्दंष्ट्रान्तरं गतः ॥११-११-२४॥
tvāṃ krodhavaśam-āpannaṃ viditvā bharatarṣabha। mayā apakṛṣṭaḥ kaunteyaḥ mṛtyoḥ daṃṣṭrāntaraṃ gataḥ ॥11-11-24॥
[त्वां (tvām) - you; क्रोध-वशम्-आपन्नम् (krodha-vaśam-āpannam) - overpowered by anger; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; भरत-ऋषभ (bharata-ṛṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; मया (mayā) - by me; अपकृष्टः (apakṛṣṭaḥ) - drawn away; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kunti; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; दंष्ट्रा-अन्तरम् (daṃṣṭrā-antaram) - within the jaws; गतः (gataḥ) - gone;]
(Having known you to be overpowered by anger, O bull among the Bharatas, the son of Kunti was drawn away by me and went within the jaws of death.)
O best of the Bharatas, knowing that you were overcome by anger, I drew away the son of Kunti, and he entered the very jaws of death.
न हि ते राजशार्दूल बले तुल्योऽस्ति कश्चन। कः सहेत महाबाहो बाह्वोर्निग्रहणं नरः ॥११-११-२५॥
na hi te rājaśārdūla bale tulyo'sti kaścana। kaḥ saheta mahābāho bāhvornigrahaṇaṃ naraḥ ॥11-11-25॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - to you; राजशार्दूल (rājaśārdūla) - O tiger among kings; बले (bale) - in strength; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; अस्ति (asti) - is; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; कः (kaḥ) - who; सहेत (saheta) - could endure; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; बाह्वोः (bāhvoḥ) - of (your) arms; निग्रहणम् (nigrahaṇam) - subduing; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(Not indeed to you, O tiger among kings, in strength is equal anyone. Who could endure, O mighty-armed, the subduing of (your) arms, man?)
O tiger among kings, truly there is no one equal to you in strength. O mighty-armed one, what man could withstand the subduing force of your arms?
यथान्तकमनुप्राप्य जीवन्कश्चिन्न मुच्यते। एवं बाह्वन्तरं प्राप्य तव जीवेन्न कश्चन ॥११-११-२६॥
yathāntakam anuprāpya jīvan kaścin na mucyate। evaṃ bāhy-antaraṃ prāpya tava jīven na kaścana ॥11-11-26॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; अन्तकम् (antakam) - death; अनुप्राप्य (anuprāpya) - having reached; जीवत् (jīvat) - living; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; न (na) - not; मुच्यते (mucyate) - is released; एवम् (evam) - in this way; बाह्य-अन्तरम् (bāhya-antarām) - external and internal; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; तव (tava) - your; जीवेत् (jīvet) - would live; न (na) - not; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone;]
(Just as, having reached death, no living being is released, so, having attained your external and internal (state), no one would live.)
Just as, upon reaching death, no one remains alive, so too, upon attaining your external and internal (state), no one would survive.
तस्मात्पुत्रेण या सा ते प्रतिमा कारितायसी। भीमस्य सेयं कौरव्य तवैवोपहृता मया ॥११-११-२७॥
tasmāt putreṇa yā sā te pratimā kāritā yasī। bhīmasya se iyam kauravya tava eva upahṛtā mayā ॥11-11-27॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; from that; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by the son; या (yā) - which; सा (sā) - that; ते (te) - for you; प्रतिमा (pratimā) - image; likeness; कारिता (kāritā) - caused to be made; यसी (yasī) - by you; भीमस्य (bhīmasya) - of Bhīma; सा (sā) - that; इयम् (iyam) - this; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; तव (tava) - your; एव (eva) - indeed; उपहृता (upahṛtā) - brought; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Therefore, the image which was caused to be made by your son, that image of Bhīma, O Kauravya, this indeed has been brought to you by me.)
Therefore, O Kauravya, the image of Bhīma which was caused to be made by your son, I have indeed brought this to you.
पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तापाद्धर्मादपहृतं मनः। तव राजेन्द्र तेन त्वं भीमसेनं जिघांससि ॥११-११-२८॥
putraśokābhisantāpāddharmādapahṛtaṃ manaḥ। tava rājendra tena tvaṃ bhīmasenaṃ jighāṃsasi ॥11-11-28॥
[पुत्र (putra) - son; शोक (śoka) - grief; अभिसन्तापात् (abhisantāpāt) - from intense distress; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from righteousness; अपहृतं (apahṛtam) - taken away; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; तव (tava) - your; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; तेन (tena) - therefore; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; भीमसेनं (bhīmasenam) - Bhimasena; जिघांससि (jighāṃsasi) - desire to kill;]
(Your mind, taken away from righteousness due to the intense distress of grief for your son, O king, therefore you desire to kill Bhimasena.)
O king, your mind, overcome by the intense grief for your son and thus removed from righteousness, therefore you wish to kill Bhimasena.
न च ते तत्क्षमं राजन्हन्यास्त्वं यद्वृकोदरम्। न हि पुत्रा महाराज जीवेयुस्ते कथञ्चन ॥११-११-२९॥
na ca te tatkṣamaṃ rājan hanyāstvaṃ yadvṛkodaram। na hi putrā mahārāja jīveyuste kathaṃcana ॥11-11-29॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; तत् (tat) - that; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - proper; राजन् (rājan) - O king; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - should kill; त्वम् (tvam) - you; यत् (yat) - because; वृकोदरम् (vṛkodaram) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; जीवेयुः (jīveyuḥ) - would live; ते (te) - your; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(And it is not proper for you, O king, to kill Vṛkodara (Bhīma), because your sons, O great king, would not live in any way.)
O king, it is not right for you to kill Bhīma, for your sons, O great king, would not survive in any way.
तस्माद्यत्कृतमस्माभिर्मन्यमानैः क्षमं प्रति। अनुमन्यस्व तत्सर्वं मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ॥११-११-३०॥
tasmādyatkṛtamasmābhirmanyamānaiḥ kṣamaṃ prati| anumanyasva tatsarvaṃ mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ ॥11-11-30॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; यत् (yat) - which; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; मन्यमानैः (manyamānaiḥ) - thinking; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - proper; प्रति (prati) - towards; अनुमन्यस्व (anumanyasva) - forgive; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; मा (mā) - do not; च (ca) - and; शोके (śoke) - in grief; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - make;]
(Therefore, whatever has been done by us, thinking it proper, forgive all that; and do not make your mind (dwell) in grief.)
Therefore, whatever we have done, thinking it was proper, please forgive all that; and do not let your mind be overcome by grief.
