Core and Pancharatra: After taking advice from Krishna, Dhritarashtra touched Bhīma, Dhanañjaya, and the two sons of Mādrī and spoke auspicious words to them.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तत एनमुपातिष्ठञ्शौचार्थं परिचारकाः। कृतशौचं पुनश्चैनं प्रोवाच मधुसूदनः ॥११-१२-१॥
tata enam upātiṣṭhan śaucārthaṃ paricārakāḥ। kṛtaśaucaṃ punaś cainaṃ provāca madhusūdanaḥ ॥11-12-1॥
[तत (tata) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; उपातिष्ठन् (upātiṣṭhan) - attended; शौचार्थम् (śaucārtham) - for the purpose of purification; परिचारकाः (paricārakāḥ) - attendants; कृतशौचम् (kṛtaśaucam) - having performed purification; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa);]
(Then the attendants attended him for the purpose of purification. Having performed purification, again Madhusūdana spoke to him.)

राजन्नधीता वेदास्ते शास्त्राणि विविधानि च। श्रुतानि च पुराणानि राजधर्माश्च केवलाः ॥११-१२-२॥
rājan-n-adhītā vedās-te śāstrāṇi vividhāni ca। śrutāni ca purāṇāni rājadharmāś-ca kevalāḥ ॥11-12-2॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - not; अधीता (adhītāḥ) - studied; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; ते (te) - by you; शास्त्राणि (śāstrāṇi) - treatises; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; च (ca) - and; श्रुतानि (śrutāni) - heard; च (ca) - and; पुराणानि (purāṇāni) - Purāṇas; राजधर्माः (rājadharmāḥ) - royal duties; च (ca) - and; केवलाः (kevalāḥ) - only;]
(O king, the Vedas have not been studied by you, nor the various treatises, nor have the Purāṇas and the royal duties alone been heard.)
O king, you have not studied the Vedas, the various treatises, nor have you even heard the Purāṇas and the royal duties alone.
एवं विद्वान्महाप्राज्ञ नाकार्षीर्वचनं तदा। पाण्डवानधिकाञ्जानन्बले शौर्ये च कौरव ॥११-१२-३॥
evaṃ vidvān mahāprājña na akāṛṣīr vacanaṃ tadā। pāṇḍavān adhikān jñānan bale śaurye ca kaurava ॥11-12-3॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विद्वान् (vidvān) - the learned one; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - the very wise; न (na) - not; अकार्षीत् (akārṣīt) - did (he) do; वचनम् (vacanam) - the statement; तदा (tadā) - then; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; अधिकान् (adhikān) - superior; जानन् (jñānan) - knowing; बले (bale) - in strength; शौर्ये (śaurye) - in heroism; च (ca) - and; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava;]
(Thus, the learned, very wise one did not do the statement then, knowing the Pāṇḍavas to be superior in strength and heroism, O Kaurava.)
Thus, the learned and very wise one did not make that statement at that time, knowing, O Kaurava, that the Pāṇḍavas were superior in strength and heroism.
राजा हि यः स्थिरप्रज्ञः स्वयं दोषानवेक्षते। देशकालविभागं च परं श्रेयः स विन्दति ॥११-१२-४॥
rājā hi yaḥ sthiraprajñaḥ svayaṃ doṣān avekṣate। deśakālavibhāgaṃ ca paraṃ śreyaḥ sa vindati ॥11-12-4॥
[राजा (rājā) - king; हि (hi) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; स्थिरप्रज्ञः (sthiraprajñaḥ) - steadfast in wisdom; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; अवेक्षते (avekṣate) - observes; देशकालविभागं (deśakālavibhāgaṃ) - division of place and time; च (ca) - and; परम् (param) - supreme; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - good; सः (saḥ) - he; विन्दति (vindati) - attains;]
(The king indeed who is steadfast in wisdom himself observes faults, and the division of place and time; he attains the supreme good.)
Indeed, the king who is steadfast in wisdom, who himself observes faults and considers the division of place and time, attains the highest good.
उच्यमानं च यः श्रेयो गृह्णीते नो हिताहिते। आपदं समनुप्राप्य स शोचत्यनये स्थितः ॥११-१२-५॥
ucyamānaṃ ca yaḥ śreyo gṛhṇīte no hitāhite। āpadaṃ samanuprāpya sa śocaty anaye sthitaḥ॥11-12-5॥
[उच्यमानं (ucyamānam) - being spoken; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; श्रेयो (śreyaḥ) - better; गृह्णीते (gṛhṇīte) - accepts; न (na) - not; उ (u) - indeed; हिताहिते (hitāhite) - in what is beneficial or harmful; आपदं (āpadaṃ) - calamity; समनुप्राप्य (samanuprāpya) - having fully encountered; सः (saḥ) - he; शोचति (śocati) - grieves; अनये (anaye) - in misfortune; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - being situated;]
(And he who does not accept what is better when it is being spoken, in what is beneficial or harmful, having fully encountered calamity, he grieves being situated in misfortune.)

ततोऽन्यवृत्तमात्मानं समवेक्षस्व भारत। राजंस्त्वं ह्यविधेयात्मा दुर्योधनवशे स्थितः ॥११-१२-६॥
tato'nyavṛttamātmānaṃ samavekṣasva bhārata। rājaṃstvaṃ hyavidheyātmā duryodhanavaśe sthitaḥ ॥11-12-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अन्यवृत्तम् (anyavṛttam) - turned otherwise; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; समवेक्षस्व (samavekṣasva) - observe; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; राजन् (rājan) - O king; त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; अविधेयात्मा (avidheyātmā) - of unsubmissive self; दुर्योधनवशे (duryodhanavaśe) - under Duryodhana's control; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - situated;]
(Then, observe your self turned otherwise, O Bhārata. O king, you indeed, of unsubmissive self, are situated under Duryodhana's control.)
Therefore, O Bhārata, consider your self which has turned otherwise. O king, you, being unsubmissive, are indeed under the sway of Duryodhana.
आत्मापराधादायस्तस्तत्किं भीमं जिघांससि। तस्मात्संयच्छ कोपं त्वं स्वमनुस्मृत्य दुष्कृतम् ॥११-१२-७॥
ātmāparādhād āyastas tat kiṃ bhīmaṃ jighāṃsasi। tasmāt saṃyaccha kopaṃ tvaṃ svam anusmṛtya duṣkṛtam ॥11-12-7॥
[आत्मा (ātmā) - self; पराधात् (parādhāt) - from fault; आयस्तः (āyastaḥ) - afflicted; तत् (tat) - that; किं (kiṃ) - why; भीमं (bhīmam) - terrible; जिघांससि (jighāṃsasi) - do you wish to kill; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; संयच्छ (saṃyaccha) - restrain; कोपं (kopaṃ) - anger; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; स्वम् (svam) - your own; अनुस्मृत्य (anusmṛtya) - having remembered; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - misdeed;]
(Afflicted by your own fault, why do you wish to do something terrible, Bhima? Therefore, restrain your anger, remembering your own misdeed.)
You are suffering due to your own fault; why, Bhima, do you wish to commit a terrible act? Therefore, restrain your anger by remembering your own wrongdoing.
यस्तु तां स्पर्धया क्षुद्रः पाञ्चालीमानयत्सभाम्। स हतो भीमसेनेन वैरं प्रतिचिकीर्षता ॥११-१२-८॥
yastu tāṃ spardhayā kṣudraḥ pāñcālīm ānayat sabhām। sa hato bhīmasenena vairaṃ praticikīrṣatā ॥11-12-8॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; तां (tāṃ) - her; स्पर्धया (spardhayā) - out of rivalry; क्षुद्रः (kṣudraḥ) - mean; पाञ्चालीम् (pāñcālīm) - Panchali (Draupadi); आनयत् (ānayat) - brought; सभाम् (sabhām) - to the assembly; सः (saḥ) - he; हतः (hataḥ) - was slain; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhimasena; वैरम् (vairam) - enmity; प्रतिचिकीर्षता (praticikīrṣatā) - desiring to repay;]
(But the one who, out of rivalry, that mean person, brought Panchali to the assembly—he was slain by Bhimasena, desiring to repay enmity.)

आत्मनोऽतिक्रमं पश्य पुत्रस्य च दुरात्मनः। यदनागसि पाण्डूनां परित्यागः परन्तप ॥११-१२-९॥
ātmano'tikramaṃ paśya putrasya ca durātmanaḥ। yadanāgasi pāṇḍūnāṃ parityāgaḥ parantapa ॥11-12-9॥
[आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; अतिक्रमम् (atikramam) - transgression; पश्य (paśya) - see; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - of the son; च (ca) - and; दुरात्मनः (durātmanaḥ) - wicked; यत् (yat) - which; अनागसि (anāgasi) - blameless; पाण्डूनाम् (pāṇḍūnām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; परित्यागः (parityāgaḥ) - abandonment; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]

एवमुक्तः स कृष्णेन सर्वं सत्यं जनाधिप। उवाच देवकीपुत्रं धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः ॥११-१२-१०॥
evam-uktaḥ sa kṛṣṇena sarvaṃ satyaṃ janādhipaḥ। uvāca devakī-putraṃ dhṛtarāṣṭro mahī-patiḥ ॥11-12-10॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; स (sa) - he; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; जनाधिपः (janādhipaḥ) - the lord of people; उवाच (uvāca) - said; देवकीपुत्रं (devakī-putram) - Devakī's son; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king;]
(Thus having been spoken by Kṛṣṇa, all truth, the lord of people, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the king, said to Devakī's son.)
When Kṛṣṇa had thus spoken the whole truth, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, lord of the people, addressed Devakī's son.
एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि माधव। पुत्रस्नेहस्तु धर्मात्मन्धैर्यान्मां समचालयत् ॥११-१२-११॥
evam etan mahābāho yathā vadasi mādhava। putrasnehastu dharmātman dhairyān māṃ samācalayat ॥11-12-11॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; यथा (yathā) - as; वदसि (vadasi) - you say; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; पुत्रस्नेहः (putrasnehaḥ) - affection for son; तु (tu) - but; धर्मात्मन् (dharmātman) - O righteous-souled; धैर्यात् (dhairyāt) - from fortitude; माम् (mām) - me; समचालयत् (samācalayat) - shook;]
(Thus, O mighty-armed, as you say, O Mādhava; but affection for my son, O righteous-souled, from fortitude, shook me.)
O mighty-armed Mādhava, it is as you say; but, O righteous-souled one, my affection for my son shook me from my fortitude.
दिष्ट्या तु पुरुषव्याघ्रो बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः। त्वद्गुप्तो नागमत्कृष्ण भीमो बाह्वन्तरं मम ॥११-१२-१२॥
diṣṭyā tu puruṣavyāghro balavān satyavikramaḥ। tvadgupto nāgamatkṛṣṇa bhīmo bāhvantaraṃ mama ॥11-12-12॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by destiny; तु (tu) - but; indeed; पुरुषव्याघ्रः (puruṣavyāghraḥ) - tiger among men; hero; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; powerful; सत्यविक्रमः (satyavikramaḥ) - true in valor; of truthful prowess; त्वत्-गुप्तः (tvat-guptaḥ) - protected by you; नागम् (nāgam) - the elephant; (here: elephant, or serpent, but contextually elephant;) अत्कृष्ण (atkṛṣṇa) - having dragged; having pulled; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; (the name of the hero;) बाह्वन्तरम् (bāhvantaram) - between the arms; मम (mama) - my;]
(By fortune, indeed, the tiger among men, strong and true in valor, protected by you, Bhima, having dragged the elephant between my arms, O Krishna.)

इदानीं त्वहमेकाग्रो गतमन्युर्गतज्वरः। मध्यमं पाण्डवं वीरं स्प्रष्टुमिच्छामि केशव ॥११-१२-१३॥
idānīṃ tv aham ekāgro gatamanyuḥ gatajvaraḥ। madhyamaṃ pāṇḍavaṃ vīraṃ spraṣṭum icchāmi keśava ॥11-12-13॥
[इदानीं (idānīṃ) - now; त्व (tv) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; एकाग्रः (ekāgraḥ) - with concentrated mind; गतमन्युः (gatamanyuḥ) - with anger gone; गतज्वरः (gatajvaraḥ) - with fever gone; मध्यमम् (madhyamam) - the middle; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pāṇḍava; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; स्प्रष्टुम् (spraṣṭum) - to touch; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; केशव (keśava) - Keśava;]
(Now, you, I, with concentrated mind, with anger gone, with fever gone, the middle Pāṇḍava hero, to touch, I wish, Keśava.)
Now, O Keśava, with my mind concentrated, anger and fever gone, I wish to touch the heroic middle Pāṇḍava.
हतेषु पार्थिवेन्द्रेषु पुत्रेषु निहतेषु च। पाण्डुपुत्रेषु मे शर्म प्रीतिश्चाप्यवतिष्ठते ॥११-१२-१४॥
hateṣu pārthivendreṣu putreṣu nihateṣu ca। pāṇḍuputreṣu me śarma prītiścāpyavatiṣṭhate ॥11-12-14॥
[हतेषु (hateṣu) - having been killed; पार्थिवेन्द्रेषु (pārthivendreṣu) - among the kings; पुत्रेषु (putreṣu) - among the sons; निहतेषु (nihateṣu) - having been slain; च (ca) - and; पाण्डुपुत्रेषु (pāṇḍuputreṣu) - among the sons of Pāṇḍu; मे (me) - my; शर्म (śarma) - happiness; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - delight; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अवतिष्ठते (avatiṣṭhate) - remains;]
(When the kings have been killed, and the sons have been slain, and among the sons of Pāṇḍu, my happiness and delight also remain.)
Even after the kings and sons have been killed, and the sons of Pāṇḍu have been slain, my happiness and delight still remain.
ततः स भीमं च धनञ्जयं च; माद्र्याश्च पुत्रौ पुरुषप्रवीरौ। पस्पर्श गात्रैः प्ररुदन्सुगात्रा; नाश्वास्य कल्याणमुवाच चैनान् ॥११-१२-१५॥

[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; भीमं (bhīmam) - Bhīma; च (ca) - and; धनञ्जयं (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya; च (ca) - and; माद्र्याः (mādryāḥ) - of Mādrī; च (ca) - and; पुत्रौ (putrau) - two sons; पुरुषप्रवीरौ (puruṣapravīrau) - heroes among men; पस्पर्श (pasparśa) - touched; गात्रैः (gātraiḥ) - with limbs; प्ररुदन् (prarudan) - weeping; सुगात्रा (sugātrā) - of beautiful limbs; न (na) - not; अश्वास्य (aśvāsya) - having consoled; कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - auspicious words; उवाच (uvāca) - said; च (ca) - and; एनान् (enān) - to them;]
(Then he touched Bhīma and Dhanañjaya and the two sons of Mādrī, heroes among men, with his limbs, weeping, of beautiful limbs; not having consoled, he spoke auspicious words to them.)
Then, weeping, he touched Bhīma, Dhanañjaya, and the two sons of Mādrī—heroes among men—with his own limbs; without consoling them, he spoke auspicious words to them.
