Pancharatra-Ext: Karna, though bitten by a worm, a daemon Gṛtsa by name, endured, suspecting that the teacher might awaken. As Karna cheated on his teacher out of greed for weapons, he was cursed.

कर्णस्य बाहुवीर्येण प्रश्रयेण दमेन च। तुतोष भृगुशार्दूलो गुरुशुश्रूषया तथा ॥१२-३-१॥
karṇasya bāhuvīryeṇa praśrayeṇa damena ca। tutoṣa bhṛguśārdūlo guruśuśrūṣayā tathā ॥12-3-1॥
[कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karṇa; बाहुवीर्येण (bāhuvīryeṇa) - by the strength of the arm; प्रश्रयेण (praśrayeṇa) - by humility; दमेन (damena) - by self-restraint; च (ca) - and; तुतोष (tutoṣa) - was pleased; भृगुशार्दूलः (bhṛguśārdūlaḥ) - the tiger among the Bhṛgus (Paraśurāma); गुरुशुश्रूषया (guruśuśrūṣayā) - by service to the teacher; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(By the strength of Karṇa's arm, by humility, and by self-restraint, the tiger among the Bhṛgus (Paraśurāma) was pleased also by service to the teacher.)
Paraśurāma, the foremost among the Bhṛgus, was pleased with Karṇa due to his physical strength, humility, self-restraint, and also his devoted service to his teacher.
तस्मै स विधिवत्कृत्स्नं ब्रह्मास्त्रं सनिवर्तनम्। प्रोवाचाखिलमव्यग्रं तपस्वी सुतपस्विने ॥१२-३-२॥
tasmai sa vidhivatkṛtsnaṃ brahmāstraṃ sanivartanam। provācākhilamavyagraṃ tapasvī sutapasvine ॥12-3-2॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; सः (saḥ) - he; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; ब्रह्मास्त्रम् (brahmāstram) - Brahma-weapon; सनिवर्तनम् (sanivartanam) - with withdrawal (method); प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; अखिलम् (akhilam) - all; अव्यग्रम् (avyagram) - unagitated; तपस्वी (tapasvī) - ascetic; सुतपस्विने (sutapasvine) - to the excellent ascetic;]
(To him, he spoke the entire Brahma-weapon with its withdrawal method, according to rule, all unagitated, the ascetic to the excellent ascetic.)
He, the ascetic, calmly and thoroughly instructed the excellent ascetic in the complete Brahma-weapon, including its withdrawal, according to the prescribed rules.
विदितास्त्रस्ततः कर्णो रममाणोऽऽश्रमे भृगोः। चकार वै धनुर्वेदे यत्नमद्भुतविक्रमः ॥१२-३-३॥
viditāstrastataḥ karṇo ramamāṇo''śrame bhṛgoḥ। cakāra vai dhanurvede yatnamadbhutavikramaḥ ॥12-3-3॥

(Then Karṇa, who had mastered weapons, delighting in the hermitage of Bhṛgu, indeed performed effort in the science of archery, being of wondrous prowess.)

ततः कदाचिद्रामस्तु चरन्नाश्रममन्तिकात्। कर्णेन सहितो धीमानुपवासेन कर्शितः ॥१२-३-४॥

(Then at some time, Rāma, but wandering from near the hermitage, accompanied by Karṇa, wise, emaciated by fasting.)

सुष्वाप जामदग्न्यो वै विस्रम्भोत्पन्नसौहृदः। कर्णस्योत्सङ्ग आधाय शिरः क्लान्तमना गुरुः ॥१२-३-५॥

(The son of Jamadagni indeed, whose friendship born of trust had arisen, slept, having placed his head, with a weary mind, on the lap of Karṇa, the teacher.)
Paraśurāma, the son of Jamadagni, whose affection for Karṇa had arisen from trust, slept with a weary mind, resting his head on Karṇa's lap.
अथ कृमिः श्लेष्ममयो मांसशोणितभोजनः। दारुणो दारुणस्पर्शः कर्णस्याभ्याशमागमत् ॥१२-३-६॥
atha kṛmiḥ śleṣmamayo māṃsaśoṇitabhojanaḥ। dāruṇo dāruṇasparśaḥ karṇasyābhyāśamāgamat ॥12-3-6॥
[अथ (atha) - then; कृमिः (kṛmiḥ) - worm; श्लेष्ममयः (śleṣmamayaḥ) - composed of phlegm; मांसशोणितभोजनः (māṃsaśoṇitabhojanaḥ) - eating flesh and blood; दारुणः (dāruṇaḥ) - terrible; दारुणस्पर्शः (dāruṇasparśaḥ) - having a terrible touch; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of the ear; अभ्याशम् (abhyāśam) - near; आगमत् (āgamat) - approached;]
(Then a worm, composed of phlegm, eating flesh and blood, terrible, having a terrible touch, approached near the ear.)

स तस्योरुमथासाद्य बिभेद रुधिराशनः। न चैनमशकत्क्षेप्तुं हन्तुं वापि गुरोर्भयात् ॥१२-३-७॥
sa tasyorumathāsādya bibheda rudhirāśanaḥ। na cainamaśakatkṣeptuṃ hantuṃ vāpi gurorbhayāt ॥12-3-7॥

(He, having approached his thigh, the blood-eater broke (it). And not even was he able to throw or to kill him from fear of the teacher.)

संदश्यमानोऽपि तथा कृमिणा तेन भारत। गुरुप्रबोधशङ्की च तमुपैक्षत सूतजः ॥१२-३-८॥
saṃdaśyamāno'pi tathā kṛmiṇā tena bhārata। guruprabodhaśaṅkī ca tamupaikṣata sūtajaḥ ॥12-3-8॥
[संदश्यमानः (saṃdaśyamānaḥ) - being bitten; (by) अपि (api) - even; also; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; कृमिणा (kṛmiṇā) - by a worm; तेन (tena) - by him; by that; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; गुरुप्रबोधशङ्की (guruprabodhaśaṅkī) - suspecting (the) awakening of the teacher; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; उपैक्षत (upaikṣata) - ignored; overlooked; सूतजः (sūtajaḥ) - the son of the charioteer;]
(Even though being bitten thus by a worm by him, O Bhārata, suspecting the awakening of the teacher, the son of the charioteer ignored him.)

कर्णस्तु वेदनां धैर्यादसह्यां विनिगृह्य ताम्। अकम्पन्नव्यथंश्चैव धारयामास भार्गवम् ॥१२-३-९॥
karṇas tu vedanāṃ dhairyād asahyāṃ vinigṛhya tām। akampan-navyathaṃś caiva dhārayām āsa bhārgavam ॥12-3-9॥

(Karṇa, however, having restrained that unbearable pain by courage, unshaken and undistressed, indeed endured the Bhārgava.)

[यदा (yadā) - when; तु (tu) - but; रुधिरेण (rudhireṇa) - with blood; अङ्गे (aṅge) - on the limb; परिस्पृष्टः (parispṛṣṭaḥ) - touched all around; भृगूद्वहः (bhṛgūdvahaḥ) - the best of the Bhṛgus; तदा (tadā) - then; अबुध्यत (abudhyata) - became aware; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - the radiant one; सन्तप्तः (santaptaḥ) - afflicted; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(When, however, the best of the Bhṛgus was touched on his limb with blood, then the radiant one, afflicted, became aware and said this.)

अहोऽस्म्यशुचितां प्राप्तः किमिदं क्रियते त्वया। कथयस्व भयं त्यक्त्वा याथातथ्यमिदं मम ॥१२-३-११॥
aho'smyaśucitāṃ prāptaḥ kimidaṃ kriyate tvayā। kathayasva bhayaṃ tyaktvā yāthātathyamidaṃ mama ॥12-3-11॥
[अहो (aho) - alas; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अशुचिताम् (aśucitām) - impurity; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; किम् (kim) - what; इदं (idaṃ) - this; क्रियते (kriyate) - is being done; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कथयस्व (kathayasva) - tell; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; याथातथ्यम् (yāthātathyam) - exact truth; इदं (idaṃ) - this; मम (mama) - to me;]
(Alas, I have attained impurity; what is this being done by you? Tell (me), having abandoned fear, the exact truth of this to me.)
Alas, I have become impure; what is this that you are doing? Tell me the exact truth of this, without fear.
तस्य कर्णस्तदाचष्ट कृमिणा परिभक्षणम्। ददर्श रामस्तं चापि कृमिं सूकरसंनिभम् ॥१२-३-१२॥
tasya karṇas tadācaṣṭa kṛmiṇā paribhakṣaṇam। dadarśa rāmas taṃ cāpi kṛmiṃ sūkarasaṃnibham ॥12-3-12॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - ear; तदा (tadā) - then; आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - saw; कृमिणा (kṛmiṇā) - by a worm; परिभक्षणम् (paribhakṣaṇam) - eating; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कृमिम् (kṛmim) - worm; सूकरसंनिभम् (sūkarasaṃnibham) - resembling a pig;]
(Of him, the ear then saw the eating by a worm. Rama saw him and also the worm resembling a pig.)

अष्टपादं तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रं सूचीभिरिव संवृतम्। रोमभिः संनिरुद्धाङ्गमलर्कं नाम नामतः ॥१२-३-१३॥
aṣṭapādaṃ tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭraṃ sūcībhiriva saṃvṛtam। romabhiḥ saṃniruddhāṅgamalarkaṃ nāma nāmataḥ ॥12-3-13॥

(Eight-footed, with sharp fangs, covered as if with needles, with hairs, with limbs completely obstructed, Alarka by name, by name.)
It was an eight-footed creature with sharp fangs, covered as if with needles and hairs, its limbs completely obstructed, called Alarka by name.
स दृष्टमात्रो रामेण कृमिः प्राणानवासृजत्। तस्मिन्नेवासृक्सङ्क्लिन्ने तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥१२-३-१४॥
sa dṛṣṭamātro rāmeṇa kṛmiḥ prāṇān avāsṛjat। tasminn evāsṛk-saṅklinne tad adbhutam ivābhavat ॥12-3-14॥

(He, just seen by Rāma, the worm released (his) life-breaths. In that indeed, soaked with blood, that became as if a wonder.)
As soon as Rāma saw it, the worm gave up its life. In that very spot, soaked with blood, it appeared as if something wonderful had happened.
ततोऽन्तरिक्षे ददृशे विश्वरूपः करालवान्। राक्षसो लोहितग्रीवः कृष्णाङ्गो मेघवाहनः ॥१२-३-१५॥
tato'ntarikṣe dadṛśe viśvarūpaḥ karālavān। rākṣaso lohitagrīvaḥ kṛṣṇāṅgo meghavāhanaḥ ॥12-3-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the sky; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - was seen; विश्वरूपः (viśvarūpaḥ) - of universal form; करालवान् (karālavān) - terrible-faced; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the demon; लोहितग्रीवः (lohitagrīvaḥ) - red-necked; कृष्णाङ्गः (kṛṣṇāṅgaḥ) - dark-bodied; मेघवाहनः (meghavāhanaḥ) - cloud-rider;]
(Then in the sky was seen the universal-formed, terrible-faced demon, red-necked, dark-bodied, cloud-rider.)
Then, a demon of universal form, with a terrible face, red neck, dark body, and riding a cloud, appeared in the sky.
स रामं प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा बभाषे पूर्णमानसः। स्वस्ति ते भृगुशार्दूल गमिष्यामि यथागतम् ॥१२-३-१६॥
sa rāmaṃ prāñjalirbhūtvā babhāṣe pūrṇamānasaḥ। svasti te bhṛguśārdūla gamiṣyāmi yathāgatam ॥12-3-16॥
[स (sa) - he; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rāma (accusative); प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; बभाषे (babhāṣe) - spoke; पूर्णमानसः (pūrṇamānasaḥ) - with full mind; स्वस्ति (svasti) - farewell; ते (te) - to you; भृगुशार्दूल (bhṛguśārdūla) - O tiger among Bhṛgus; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; यथागतम् (yathāgatam) - as (I) came;]
(He, having become with joined palms, spoke to Rāma with full mind: "Farewell to you, O tiger among Bhṛgus, I shall go as I came.")
With joined palms and a full heart, he addressed Rāma: "Farewell, O best of Bhṛgus, I will depart the way I came."
मोक्षितो नरकादस्मि भवता मुनिसत्तम। भद्रं च तेऽस्तु नन्दिश्च प्रियं मे भवता कृतम् ॥१२-३-१७॥
mokṣito narakādasmi bhavatā munisattama। bhadraṃ ca te'stu nandiśca priyaṃ me bhavatā kṛtam ॥12-3-17॥
[मोक्षितः (mokṣitaḥ) - liberated; नरकात् (narakāt) - from hell; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; मुनिसत्तम (munisattama) - O best of sages; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspiciousness; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; नन्दिः (nandiḥ) - joy; च (ca) - and; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; मे (me) - to me; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done;]
(Liberated from hell I am by you, O best of sages. Auspiciousness and joy to you; dear to me by you has been done.)
O best of sages, I have been liberated from hell by you. May auspiciousness and joy be yours; what you have done is dear to me.
तमुवाच महाबाहुर्जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान्। कस्त्वं कस्माच्च नरकं प्रतिपन्नो ब्रवीहि तत् ॥१२-३-१८॥
tam uvāca mahābāhur jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān। kas tvaṃ kasmāc ca narakaṃ pratipanno bravīhi tat ॥12-3-18॥

(Him said the mighty-armed, descendant of Jamadagni, glorious: Who are you, and from what (reason) have you entered hell? Tell that.)
The mighty-armed, glorious descendant of Jamadagni said to him: "Who are you, and for what reason have you entered hell? Tell me that."
सोऽब्रवीदहमासं प्राग्गृत्सो नाम महासुरः। पुरा देवयुगे तात भृगोस्तुल्यवया इव ॥१२-३-१९॥
so'bravīd aham āsaṃ prāg-gṛtso nāma mahāsuraḥ। purā devayuge tāta bhṛgoḥ tulya-vayā iva ॥12-3-19॥

(He said: I was formerly Gṛtsa by name, a great asura. Formerly, O dear one, in the age of the gods, (I was) like Bhṛgu in age.)
He said, "I was once Gṛtsa by name, a great asura. Long ago, O dear one, in the age of the gods, I was of equal age to Bhṛgu."
सोऽहं भृगोः सुदयितां भार्यामपहरं बलात्। महर्षेरभिशापेन कृमिभूतोऽपतं भुवि ॥१२-३-२०॥
so'ham bhṛgoḥ sudayitāṃ bhāryām-apaharaṃ balāt। maharṣer-abhiśāpena kṛmibhūto'pataṃ bhuvi ॥12-3-20॥

(He, I, of Bhṛgu, the very beloved wife, I abducted by force; by the curse of the great sage, having become a worm, I fell on the earth.)

अब्रवीत्तु स मां क्रोधात्तव पूर्वपितामहः। मूत्रश्लेष्माशनः पाप निरयं प्रतिपत्स्यसे ॥१२-३-२१॥

(Of the curse, end there will be, O Brahman, always thus; to him then I said: "Will be to Bhārgava Rāma"—thus to me said Bhṛgu.)

(He, I, this state, attained, as, not, good, so, by you, O holy one, having met, liberated, from sinful birth.)
O holy one, I have attained this state, which is neither good nor auspicious, but having met you, I have been liberated from a sinful birth.
एवमुक्त्वा नमस्कृत्य ययौ रामं महासुरः। रामः कर्णं तु सक्रोधमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१२-३-२४॥
evam-uktvā namaskṛtya yayau rāmaṃ mahāsuraḥ। rāmaḥ karṇaṃ tu sakrodham-idaṃ vacanam-abravīt ॥12-3-24॥

(Thus having spoken and having bowed, the great asura went to Rāma. But Rāma, with anger, spoke this speech to Karṇa.)

(Him said then Karṇa, afraid of curse, conciliating: Between Brāhmaṇa and Kṣatriya, as a charioteer born, me know, O Bhārgava.)
Then Karṇa, fearful of the curse and seeking favor, said: "O Bhārgava, know me as one born as a charioteer between Brāhmaṇa and Kṣatriya."

तमुवाच भृगुश्रेष्ठः सरोषः प्रहसन्निव। भूमौ निपतितं दीनं वेपमानं कृताञ्जलिम् ॥१२-३-२९॥

(Elsewhere, from the time of execution, your (soul), having met with one similar, in a non-Brahmin, Brahman certainly does not remain at any time.)

गच्छेदानीं न ते स्थानमनृतस्येह विद्यते। न त्वया सदृशो युद्धे भविता क्षत्रियो भुवि ॥१२-३-३२॥

[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; (imperative, from root gam;) इदानीं (idānīṃ) - now; न (na) - not; ते (te) - for you; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; अनृतस्य (anṛtasya) - of untruth; इह (iha) - here; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; न (na) - not; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - equal; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a kṣatriya (warrior); भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
(Go now; for you, there is no place for untruth here. By you, no kṣatriya equal in battle will be on earth.)

(Thus spoken by Rāma, but he approached with justice. Having approached Duryodhana, he said, "I am prepared with weapons.")
Thus, when addressed by Rāma, he approached justly. Coming to Duryodhana, he declared, "I am ready with my weapons."
