मुहूर्तं तावदेकाग्रो मनःश्रोत्रेऽन्तरात्मनि। धारयित्वापि ते श्रुत्वा रोचतां वचनं मम ॥१२-९-१॥
muhūrtaṃ tāvadekāgro manaḥśrotre'ntarātmani। dhārayitvāpi te śrutvā rocatāṃ vacanaṃ mama ॥12-9-1॥

(For a moment, being one-pointed in mind and ear, having held (attention) in the inner self, even after hearing, let my speech be pleasing to you.)
For a moment, focus your mind and ear, hold your attention within, and after listening, may my words be pleasing to you.
सार्थगम्यमहं मार्गं न जातु त्वत्कृते पुनः। गच्छेयं तद्गमिष्यामि हित्वा ग्राम्यसुखान्युत ॥१२-९-२॥
sārthagamyamahaṃ mārgaṃ na jātu tvatkṛte punaḥ। gaccheyaṃ tadgamiṣyāmi hitvā grāmyasukhānyuta ॥12-9-2॥

(I would not ever again go on a path fit for a caravan for your sake; that I will go, having abandoned worldly pleasures indeed.)
I will never again take the well-traveled road for your sake; I will go that way, having left behind all worldly pleasures.
क्षेम्यश्चैकाकिना गम्यः पन्थाः कोऽस्तीति पृच्छ माम्। अथ वा नेच्छसि प्रष्टुमपृच्छन्नपि मे शृणु ॥१२-९-३॥

हित्वा ग्राम्यसुखाचारं तप्यमानो महत्तपः। अरण्ये फलमूलाशी चरिष्यामि मृगैः सह ॥१२-९-४॥
hitvā grāmyasukhācāraṃ tapyamāno mahattapaḥ। araṇye phalamūlāśī cariṣyāmi mṛgaiḥ saha ॥12-9-4॥

जुह्वानोऽग्निं यथाकालमुभौ कालावुपस्पृशन्। कृशः परिमिताहारश्चर्मचीरजटाधरः ॥१२-९-५॥

शीतवातातपसहः क्षुत्पिपासाश्रमक्षमः। तपसा विधिदृष्टेन शरीरमुपशोषयन् ॥१२-९-६॥

मनःकर्णसुखा नित्यं शृण्वन्नुच्चावचा गिरः। मुदितानामरण्येषु वसतां मृगपक्षिणाम् ॥१२-९-७॥
manaḥ-karṇa-sukhā nityaṃ śṛṇvan-nuccāvacā giraḥ। muditānām araṇyeṣu vasatāṃ mṛga-pakṣiṇām ॥12-9-7॥

आजिघ्रन्पेशलान्गन्धान्फुल्लानां वृक्षवीरुधाम्। नानारूपान्वने पश्यन्रमणीयान्वनौकसः ॥१२-९-८॥

वानप्रस्थजनस्यापि दर्शनं कुलवासिनः। नाप्रियाण्याचरिष्यामि किं पुनर्ग्रामवासिनाम् ॥१२-९-९॥
vānaprasthajanasya api darśanaṃ kulavāsinaḥ। na apriyāṇi ācariṣyāmi kiṃ punaḥ grāmavāsinām ॥12-9-9॥

एकान्तशीली विमृशन्पक्वापक्वेन वर्तयन्। पितॄन्देवांश्च वन्येन वाग्भिरद्भिश्च तर्पयन् ॥१२-९-१०॥
ekāntaśīlī vimṛśan pakvāpakvena vartayan। pitṝn devāṃś ca vanyena vāgbhir adbhiś ca tarpayan ॥12-9-10॥

He, being solitary and reflective, lived on both ripe and unripe food, and satisfied the ancestors and gods with offerings of forest produce, words, and water.
एवमारण्यशास्त्राणामुग्रमुग्रतरं विधिम्। सेवमानः प्रतीक्षिष्ये देहस्यास्य समापनम् ॥१२-९-११॥
evam-āraṇya-śāstrāṇām ugram ugrataraṃ vidhim। sevamānaḥ pratīkṣiṣye dehasya asya samāpanam ॥12-9-11॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आरण्य (āraṇya) - of the forest; शास्त्राणाम् (śāstrāṇām) - of the scriptures; उग्रम् (ugram) - severe; उग्रतरम् (ugrataraṃ) - more severe; विधिम् (vidhim) - rule; सेवमानः (sevamānaḥ) - observing; प्रतीक्षिष्ये (pratīkṣiṣye) - I shall await; देहस्य (dehasya) - of the body; अस्य (asya) - of this; समापनम् (samāpanam) - end;]
(Thus, observing the severe and more severe rule of the forest scriptures, I shall await the end of this body.)
Thus, by observing the most severe rules of the forest scriptures, I shall wait for the end of this body.
अथ वैकोऽहमेकाहमेकैकस्मिन्वनस्पतौ। चरन्भैक्ष्यं मुनिर्मुण्डः क्षपयिष्ये कलेवरम् ॥१२-९-१२॥
atha vaiko'ham-ekāham-ekaikasmin vanaspatau। caran bhaikṣyam munir muṇḍaḥ kṣapayiṣye kalevaram ॥12-9-12॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; one; अहम् (aham) - I; एकाहम् (ekāham) - one day at a time; for one day; एकैकस्मिन् (ekaikasmin) - in each; in every single; वनस्पतौ (vanaspatau) - tree; in a tree; चरन् (caran) - wandering; moving; भैक्ष्यम् (bhaikṣyam) - alms; food obtained by begging; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; ascetic; मुण्डः (muṇḍaḥ) - shaven-headed; bald; क्षपयिष्ये (kṣapayiṣye) - I shall wear away; I shall destroy; कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body; physical frame;]
(Now indeed, alone, I, for one day at a time, in each tree, wandering, alms, the sage, shaven-headed, I shall wear away the body.)
Now, indeed, I shall live alone, spending each day in a different tree, wandering for alms, and as a shaven-headed sage, I shall gradually wear away my body.
पांसुभिः समवच्छन्नः शून्यागारप्रतिश्रयः। वृक्षमूलनिकेतो वा त्यक्तसर्वप्रियाप्रियः ॥१२-९-१३॥
pāṃsubhiḥ samavacchannaḥ śūnyāgārapratiśrayaḥ। vṛkṣamūlaniketo vā tyaktasarvapriyāpriyaḥ ॥12-9-13॥
[पांसुभिः (pāṃsubhiḥ) - with dust; समवच्छन्नः (samavacchannaḥ) - completely covered; शून्यागारप्रतिश्रयः (śūnyāgārapratiśrayaḥ) - taking shelter in an empty house; वृक्षमूलनिकेतः (vṛkṣamūlaniketaḥ) - dwelling at the root of a tree; वा (vā) - or; त्यक्तसर्वप्रियाप्रियः (tyaktasarvapriyāpriyaḥ) - having abandoned all that is dear and not dear;]

न शोचन्न प्रहृष्यंश्च तुल्यनिन्दात्मसंस्तुतिः। निराशीर्निर्ममो भूत्वा निर्द्वंद्वो निष्परिग्रहः ॥१२-९-१४॥
na śocan na prahṛṣyaṃś ca tulya-nindātma-saṃstutiḥ। nirāśīr nirmamo bhūtvā nirdvandvo niṣparigrahaḥ ॥12-9-14॥

(Not grieving, not rejoicing, equal in blame and self-praise, without expectation, without possessiveness, having become free from dualities, without acquisition.)
One who neither grieves nor rejoices, who is equal in blame and self-praise, who is free from expectation and possessiveness, who is established in freedom from dualities and acquisition.
आत्मारामः प्रसन्नात्मा जडान्धबधिराकृतिः। अकुर्वाणः परैः काञ्चित्संविदं जातु केनचित् ॥१२-९-१५॥
ātmārāmaḥ prasannātmā jaḍāndhabadhirākṛtiḥ। akurvāṇaḥ paraiḥ kāñcit saṃvidaṃ jātu kenacit ॥12-9-15॥
[आत्मारामः (ātmārāmaḥ) - one who delights in the Self; प्रसन्नात्मा (prasannātmā) - of clear mind; जड (jaḍa) - dull; अन्ध (andha) - blind; बधिर (badhira) - deaf; आकृतिः (ākṛtiḥ) - in the form; अकुर्वाणः (akurvāṇaḥ) - not engaging (in action); परैः (paraiḥ) - with others; काञ्चित् (kāñcit) - any; संविदं (saṃvidaṃ) - communication; जातु (jātu) - ever; केनचित् (kenacit) - with anyone;]
(One who delights in the Self, of clear mind, in the form of dull, blind, and deaf, not engaging in any communication with others at any time with anyone.)
He delights in his own Self, his mind is serene, and he appears as if dull, blind, and deaf. He never engages in any communication with anyone at any time.
जङ्गमाजङ्गमान्सर्वान्नविहिंसंश्चतुर्विधान्। प्रजाः सर्वाः स्वधर्मस्थाः समः प्राणभृतः प्रति ॥१२-९-१६॥
jaṅgamājaṅgamān sarvān na vihiṁsaṁ caturvidhān। prajāḥ sarvāḥ svadharmasthāḥ samaḥ prāṇabhṛtaḥ prati ॥12-9-16॥
[जङ्गम (jaṅgama) - moving; अजङ्गमान् (ajaṅgamān) - non-moving; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; न (na) - not; विहिंसन् (vihiṁsan) - harming; चतुर्विधान् (caturvidhān) - of four kinds; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; स्वधर्मस्थाः (svadharmasthāḥ) - established in their own duty; समः (samaḥ) - equal; प्राणभृतः (prāṇabhṛtaḥ) - towards living beings; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Not harming any of the moving or non-moving, all four kinds of beings; all creatures established in their own duty, equal towards living beings.)
One should not harm any moving or non-moving beings of all four kinds; all creatures, established in their own duties, should be equal towards all living beings.
न चाप्यवहसन्कञ्चिन्न कुर्वन्भ्रुकुटीं क्वचित्। प्रसन्नवदनो नित्यं सर्वेन्द्रियसुसंयतः ॥१२-९-१७॥
na cāpyavahasan kañcin na kurvan bhrukuṭīṃ kvacit। prasannavadano nityaṃ sarvendriyasusaṃyataḥ ॥12-9-17॥

(Not laughing at anyone, not making a frown at any time, always with a cheerful face, well-restrained in all senses.)
He never laughed at anyone, nor did he ever frown; he was always cheerful and had complete control over all his senses.
अपृच्छन्कस्यचिन्मार्गं व्रजन्येनैव केनचित्। न देशं न दिशं काञ्चिद्गन्तुमिच्छन्विशेषतः ॥१२-९-१८॥
apṛcchan kasya-cin mārgaṃ vrajan yena eva kenacit। na deśaṃ na diśaṃ kāñcid gantum icchan viśeṣataḥ ॥12-9-18॥
[अपृच्छन् (apṛcchan) - not asking; कस्यचित् (kasya-cit) - of anyone; मार्गं (mārgaṃ) - the path; व्रजन् (vrajan) - going; येनैव (yena-eva) - by whom indeed; केनचित् (kena-cit) - by anyone; न (na) - not; देशं (deśaṃ) - country; न (na) - not; दिशं (diśaṃ) - direction; काञ्चित् (kāñcit) - any; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; इच्छन् (icchan) - desiring; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(Not asking anyone, going on the path by whomever indeed, not desiring especially to go to any country or any direction.)
He did not ask anyone about the path, and as he went, he did not particularly wish to go to any country or direction.
गमने निरपेक्षश्च पश्चादनवलोकयन्। ऋजुः प्रणिहितो गच्छंस्त्रसस्थावरवर्जकः ॥१२-९-१९॥
gamane nirapekṣaś ca paścād anavalokayan। ṛjuḥ praṇihito gacchan trasasthāvaravarjakaḥ ॥12-9-19॥
[गमने (gamane) - in going; निरपेक्षः (nirapekṣaḥ) - indifferent; च (ca) - and; पश्चात् (paścāt) - behind; अनवलोकयन् (anavalokayan) - not looking; ऋजुः (ṛjuḥ) - straight; प्रणिहितः (praṇihitaḥ) - intent; गच्छन् (gacchan) - going; त्रसस्थावरवर्जकः (trasasthāvaravarjakaḥ) - avoiding moving and unmoving beings;]
(In going, indifferent and not looking behind, straight, intent, going, avoiding moving and unmoving beings.)
While going, he is indifferent, does not look back, proceeds straight and intent, avoiding both moving and unmoving beings.
स्वभावस्तु प्रयात्यग्रे प्रभवन्त्यशनान्यपि। द्वंद्वानि च विरुद्धानि तानि सर्वाण्यचिन्तयन् ॥१२-९-२०॥
svabhāvastu prayātyagre prabhavantyaśanānyapi। dvaṃdvāni ca viruddhāni tāni sarvāṇyacintayan ॥12-9-20॥
[स्वभावः (svabhāvaḥ) - own-nature; essence; तु (tu) - but; प्रयाति (prayāti) - proceeds; goes; अग्रे (agre) - ahead; forward; प्रभवन्ति (prabhavanti) - arise; come into being; अशनानि (aśanāni) - foods; eatables; अपि (api) - also; even; द्वंद्वानि (dvaṃdvāni) - pairs; dualities; च (ca) - and; विरुद्धानि (viruddhāni) - opposed; contrary; तानि (tāni) - those; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; अचिन्तयन् (acintayan) - not considering; disregarding;]
(But own-nature proceeds ahead; foods also arise; and pairs, opposed, those all, not considering.)
But one's own nature proceeds forward; even foods arise; and all those pairs of opposites, disregarding them.
अल्पं वास्वादु वा भोज्यं पूर्वालाभेन जातु चित्। अन्येष्वपि चरँल्लाभमलाभे सप्त पूरयन् ॥१२-९-२१॥
alpaṃ vāsvādu vā bhojyaṃ pūrvālābhena jātu cit | anyeṣv api caraṃllābhamalābhe sapta pūrayan ॥12-9-21॥

(Little or pleasant or food, by previous gain, ever at all; in others also, moving, in gain and non-gain, seven fulfilling.)
Whether the food is little or pleasant, or whatever is obtained previously, at any time; even while moving among others, in gain and loss, fulfilling the seven (obligations).
विधूमे न्यस्तमुसले व्यङ्गारे भुक्तवज्जने। अतीतपात्रसञ्चारे काले विगतभिक्षुके ॥१२-९-२२॥
vidhūme nyastamusale vyaṅgāre bhuktavajjane। atītapātrasañcāre kāle vigatabhikṣuke ॥12-9-22॥
[विधूमे (vidhūme) - in a place without smoke; न्यस्त (nyasta) - laid down; मुसले (musale) - the pestle; व्यङ्गारे (vyaṅgāre) - with the fire extinguished; भुक्तवत् (bhuktavat) - as if eaten; जने (jane) - with people; अतीत (atīta) - passed; पात्र (pātra) - the bowl; सञ्चारे (sañcāre) - when movement has ceased; काले (kāle) - at the time; विगत (vigata) - departed; भिक्षुके (bhikṣuke) - the mendicant;]
(In a place without smoke, with the pestle laid down, with the fire extinguished, as if people have eaten, when the bowl has been put away, at the time when the mendicant has departed.)
When there is no smoke, the pestle is set aside, the fire is out, people have eaten, the bowl is put away, and the mendicant has left.
एककालं चरन्भैक्ष्यं गृहे द्वे चैव पञ्च च। स्पृहापाशान्विमुच्याहं चरिष्यामि महीमिमाम् ॥१२-९-२३॥
ekakālaṃ caranbhaikṣyaṃ gṛhe dve caiva pañca ca। spṛhāpāśānvimucyāhaṃ cariṣyāmi mahīmimām ॥12-9-23॥

(Wandering for alms at one time, in two or five houses indeed, having released the bonds of desire, I shall wander this earth.)

न जिजीविषुवत्किञ्चिन्न मुमूर्षुवदाचरन्। जीवितं मरणं चैव नाभिनन्दन्न च द्विषन् ॥१२-९-२४॥

(Not acting like one wishing to live, nor like one wishing to die; life and death indeed neither rejoicing nor hating.)

(Of the fragrance, carving one arm, with sandalwood anointing one, not thinking of the inauspicious nor the auspicious, of both of them.)

याः काश्चिज्जीवता शक्याः कर्तुमभ्युदयक्रियाः। सर्वास्ताः समभित्यज्य निमेषादिव्यवस्थितः ॥१२-९-२६॥

(Moving thus as one free from passion, I shall attain eternal contentment. Indeed, by desire, I have been caused to commit great sin out of ignorance.)

(Some humans, having performed auspicious and inauspicious actions, bear those called their own people, joined with cause and effect.)
Some people, after performing good and bad deeds, carry those called their own relatives, who are bound together by cause and effect.
आयुषोऽन्ते प्रहायेदं क्षीणप्रायं कलेवरम्। प्रतिगृह्णाति तत्पापं कर्तुः कर्मफलं हि तत् ॥१२-९-३१॥
āyuṣo'nte prahāyedaṃ kṣīṇaprāyaṃ kalevaram। pratigṛhṇāti tatpāpaṃ kartuḥ karmaphalaṃ hi tat ॥12-9-31॥
[आयुषः (āyuṣaḥ) - of life; अन्ते (ante) - at the end; प्रहाय (prahāya) - having abandoned; इदम् (idam) - this; क्षीणप्रायम् (kṣīṇaprāyam) - almost exhausted; कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body; प्रतिगृह्णाति (pratigṛhṇāti) - receives; तत् (tat) - that; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; कर्तुः (kartuḥ) - of the doer; कर्मफलं (karmaphalam) - fruit of action; हि (hi) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that;]
(At the end of life, having abandoned this almost exhausted body, it receives that sin, indeed that is the fruit of action of the doer.)

divaḥ patatsu deveṣu sthānebhyaśca maharṣiṣu। ko hi nāma bhavenārthī bhavetkāraṇatattvavit ॥12-9-34॥

(Having performed indeed various actions, each with various characteristics, the king is bound by kings by only small causes.)

tasmāt-prajñāmṛtam-idaṃ cirān-māṃ pratyupasthitam। tat-prāpya prārthaye sthānam-avyayaṃ śāśvataṃ dhruvam ॥12-9-36॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; प्रज्ञामृतम् (prajñāmṛtam) - nectar of wisdom; इदं (idaṃ) - this; चिरात् (cirāt) - after a long time; माम् (mām) - to me; प्रत्युपस्थितम् (pratyupasthitam) - has come before; तत् (tat) - that; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; प्रार्थये (prārthaye) - I request; स्थानम् (sthānam) - abode; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - imperishable; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - fixed;]
