Pancharatra: Bhishma recognizes and worships Krishna as Lord Vishnu. Krishna requests Bhishma to impart the vast knowledge he has to Yudhishthira.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

श्रुत्वा तु वचनं भीष्मो वासुदेवस्य धीमतः। किञ्चिदुन्नाम्य वदनं प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१२-५१-१॥
śrutvā tu vacanaṃ bhīṣmo vāsudevasya dhīmataḥ। kiñcidunnāmya vadanaṃ prāñjalirvākyamabravīt ॥12-51-1॥

(Having heard the speech of the wise Vasudeva, Bhishma, raising his face a little, with joined palms, spoke these words.)
After hearing the words of the wise Vasudeva, Bhishma slightly raised his face and, with joined palms, spoke as follows.
नमस्ते भगवन्विष्णो लोकानां निधनोद्भव। त्वं हि कर्ता हृषीकेश संहर्ता चापराजितः ॥१२-५१-२॥
namaste bhagavan-viṣṇo lokānāṃ nidhanodbhava। tvaṃ hi kartā hṛṣīkeśa saṃhartā cāparājitaḥ ॥12-51-2॥

(Salutation to you, O Lord Viṣṇu, origin and dissolution of the worlds. You indeed are the creator, Hṛṣīkeśa, the destroyer and unconquered.)
Salutations to you, O Lord Viṣṇu, who is both the origin and dissolution of the worlds. Truly, you are the creator, Hṛṣīkeśa, the destroyer, and the unconquered one.
विश्वकर्मन्नमस्तेऽस्तु विश्वात्मन्विश्वसम्भव। अपवर्गोऽसि भूतानां पञ्चानां परतः स्थितः ॥१२-५१-३॥

(Universal creator, salutation to you, let it be; soul of the universe, origin of the universe; you are liberation, situated beyond the five beings.)
O Universal Creator, salutations to you! You are the soul and origin of the universe. You are liberation, existing beyond the five elements.
नमस्ते त्रिषु लोकेषु नमस्ते परतस्त्रिषु। योगेश्वर नमस्तेऽस्तु त्वं हि सर्वपरायणम् ॥१२-५१-४॥
namaste triṣu lokeṣu namaste paratastriṣu। yogeśvara namaste'stu tvaṃ hi sarvaparáyaṇam ॥12-51-4॥

Salutations to you in all three worlds and beyond them. O Lord of Yoga, salutations to you; for you are truly the supreme refuge of all.
मत्संश्रितं यदात्थ त्वं वचः पुरुषसत्तम। तेन पश्यामि ते दिव्यान्भावान्हि त्रिषु वर्त्मसु ॥१२-५१-५॥
matsaṃśritaṃ yadāttha tvaṃ vacaḥ puruṣasattama। tena paśyāmi te divyānbhāvān hi triṣu vartmasu ॥12-51-5॥

(Having taken refuge in me, which you have said, O best among men, by that I see your divine forms indeed in the three paths.)
O best among men, because of the words you have spoken as I have taken refuge in you, I now see your divine forms indeed in all three paths.
तच्च पश्यामि तत्त्वेन यत्ते रूपं सनातनम्। सप्त मार्गा निरुद्धास्ते वायोरमिततेजसः ॥१२-५१-६॥
tac ca paśyāmi tattvena yat te rūpaṃ sanātanam। sapta mārgā niruddhās te vāyor amitatejasaḥ ॥12-51-6॥
[तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - in reality; यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - your; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal; सप्त (sapta) - seven; मार्गाः (mārgāḥ) - paths; निरुद्धाः (niruddhāḥ) - restrained; ते (te) - by you; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of the wind; अमिततेजसः (amitatejasaḥ) - of infinite brilliance;]
(That and I see in reality which your form eternal. Seven paths restrained by you of the wind of infinite brilliance.)
And that, I see in reality your eternal form. The seven paths of the wind, of infinite brilliance, are restrained by you.
दिवं ते शिरसा व्याप्तं पद्भ्यां देवी वसुन्धरा। दिशो भुजौ रविश्चक्षुर्वीर्ये शक्रः प्रतिष्ठितः ॥१२-५१-७॥
divaṃ te śirasā vyāptaṃ padbhyāṃ devī vasundharā। diśo bhujau raviścakṣurvīrye śakraḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ ॥12-51-7॥
[दिवं (divam) - heaven; ते (te) - your; शिरसा (śirasā) - by (your) head; व्याप्तं (vyāptam) - pervaded; पद्भ्यां (padbhyām) - by (your) feet; देवी (devī) - O goddess; वसुन्धरा (vasundharā) - earth; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; भुजौ (bhujau) - (your) arms; रविः (raviḥ) - sun; चक्षुः (cakṣuḥ) - (your) eye; वीर्ये (vīrye) - in (your) strength; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; प्रतिष्ठितः (pratiṣṭhitaḥ) - established;]
(Heaven is pervaded by your head, O goddess, the earth by your feet; the directions by your arms, the sun is your eye, Indra is established in your strength.)

अतसीपुष्पसङ्काशं पीतवाससमच्युतम्। वपुर्ह्यनुमिमीमस्ते मेघस्येव सविद्युतः ॥१२-५१-८॥
atasīpuṣpasaṅkāśaṃ pītavāsasamacyutam। vapurhyanumimīmaste meghasyeva savidyutaḥ ॥12-51-8॥
[अतसीपुष्प (atasīpuṣpa) - of the flax flower; सङ्काशं (saṅkāśaṃ) - resembling; पीत (pīta) - yellow; वाससम् (vāsasam) - garment; अच्युतम् (acyutam) - imperishable; वपुः (vapuḥ) - form; हि (hi) - indeed; अनुमिमीमः (anumimīmaḥ) - we infer; ते (te) - your; मेघस्य (meghasya) - of the cloud; इव (iva) - like; सविद्युतः (sa-vidyutaḥ) - with lightning;]
(We indeed infer your imperishable form, resembling the flax flower, with yellow garment, like a cloud with lightning.)
We perceive your imperishable form, yellow-robed and radiant like the flax flower, as if it were a cloud adorned with lightning.
त्वत्प्रपन्नाय भक्ताय गतिमिष्टां जिगीषवे। यच्छ्रेयः पुण्डरीकाक्ष तद्ध्यायस्व सुरोत्तम ॥१२-५१-९॥
tvat-prapannāya bhaktāya gatim iṣṭāṃ jigīṣave। yac chreyaḥ puṇḍarīkākṣa tad dhyāyasva surottama ॥12-51-9॥
[त्वत् (tvat) - from you; प्रपन्नाय (prapannāya) - to one who has surrendered; भक्ताय (bhaktāya) - to the devotee; गतिम् (gatim) - the path; इष्टाम् (iṣṭām) - desired; जिगीषवे (jigīṣave) - to one who wishes to conquer; यत् (yat) - which; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the highest good; पुण्डरीकाक्ष (puṇḍarīkākṣa) - O lotus-eyed one; तत् (tat) - that; ध्यायस्व (dhyāyasva) - meditate upon; सुरोत्तम (surottama) - O best of the gods;]
(To one who has surrendered to you, to the devotee, for the one who wishes to conquer, the desired path, O lotus-eyed one, whatever is the highest good, O best of the gods, meditate upon that.)
O lotus-eyed one, for the devotee who has surrendered to you and seeks victory, meditate upon that path which is the highest good, O best of the gods.

यतः खलु परा भक्तिर्मयि ते पुरुषर्षभ। ततो वपुर्मया दिव्यं तव राजन्प्रदर्शितम् ॥१२-५१-१०॥
yataḥ khalu parā bhaktir mayi te puruṣarṣabha। tato vapur mayā divyaṃ tava rājan pradarśitam ॥12-51-10॥
[यतः (yataḥ) - because; खलु (khalu) - indeed; परा (parā) - supreme; भक्तिः (bhaktiḥ) - devotion; मयि (mayi) - in me; ते (te) - your; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; वपुः (vapuḥ) - form; मया (mayā) - by me; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; तव (tava) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रदर्शितम् (pradarśitam) - has been shown;]
(Because indeed supreme devotion in me (is) yours, O best of men, therefore the divine form of yours by me, O king, has been shown.)
O king, because you truly possess supreme devotion to me, O best of men, therefore I have revealed your divine form to you.
न ह्यभक्ताय राजेन्द्र भक्तायानृजवे न च। दर्शयाम्यहमात्मानं न चादान्ताय भारत ॥१२-५१-११॥
na hy abhaktāya rājendra bhaktāyā-nṛjave na ca। darśayāmy aham ātmānaṃ na cādāntāya bhārata॥12-51-11॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अभक्ताय (abhaktāya) - to the non-devoted; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; भक्ताय (bhaktāya) - to the devoted; अनृजवे (anṛjave) - to the insincere; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; दर्शयामि (darśayāmi) - I show; अहम् (aham) - I; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अदान्ताय (adāntāya) - to the undisciplined; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata;]
(Not indeed to the non-devoted, O king, nor to the insincere devoted, do I show myself, nor to the undisciplined, O Bharata.)
O King, I do not reveal myself to the non-devoted, nor to the insincere even if devoted, nor to the undisciplined, O Bharata.
भवांस्तु मम भक्तश्च नित्यं चार्जवमास्थितः। दमे तपसि सत्ये च दाने च निरतः शुचिः ॥१२-५१-१२॥
bhavāṃstu mama bhaktaśca nityaṃ cārjavamāsthitaḥ। dame tapasi satye ca dāne ca nirataḥ śuciḥ ॥12-51-12॥

(You, however, are my devotee, always established in sincerity; engaged in self-restraint, austerity, truth, and charity, pure.)

[अर्हः (arhaḥ) - worthy; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhīṣma; माम् (mām) - me; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; स्वेन (svena) - by your own; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; तव (tava) - your; हि (hi) - indeed; उपस्थिता (upasthitā) - have approached; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; येभ्यः (yebhyaḥ) - from which; न (na) - not; आवर्तते (āvartate) - returns; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(You are worthy, Bhīṣma, to see me by your own austerity, O king. Indeed, the worlds have approached you, from which one does not return again.)
O Bhīṣma, by your own austerity you are worthy to see me, O king. Indeed, the worlds have come to you, from which there is no return.
पञ्चाशतं षट्च कुरुप्रवीर; शेषं दिनानां तव जीवितस्य। ततः शुभैः कर्मफलोदयैस्त्वं; समेष्यसे भीष्म विमुच्य देहम् ॥१२-५१-१४॥
pañcāśataṃ ṣaṭ ca kurupravīra; śeṣaṃ dinānāṃ tava jīvitasya. tataḥ śubhaiḥ karmaphalodayais tvaṃ; sameṣyase bhīṣma vimucya deham ॥12-51-14॥
[पञ्चाशतम् (pañcāśatam) - fifty; षट् (ṣaṭ) - six; च (ca) - and; कुरुप्रवीर (kurupravīra) - O chief of the Kurus; शेषम् (śeṣam) - remaining; दिनानाम् (dinānām) - of days; तव (tava) - of your; जीवितस्य (jīvitasya) - of life; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शुभैः (śubhaiḥ) - by auspicious; कर्मफलोदयैः (karmaphalodayaiḥ) - by the arising of the fruits of actions; त्वम् (tvam) - you; समेष्यसे (sameṣyase) - will attain; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - O Bhishma; विमुच्य (vimucya) - having released; देहम् (deham) - the body;]
(Fifty and six, O chief of the Kurus; the remaining of the days of your life. Then by auspicious arising of the fruits of actions, you, O Bhishma, having released the body, will attain.)
O chief of the Kurus, fifty-six days remain of your life. Then, O Bhishma, by the auspicious arising of the fruits of your actions, you will attain release from the body.
एते हि देवा वसवो विमाना; न्यास्थाय सर्वे ज्वलिताग्निकल्पाः। अन्तर्हितास्त्वां प्रतिपालयन्ति; काष्ठां प्रपद्यन्तमुदक्पतङ्गम् ॥१२-५१-१५॥
ete hi devā vasavo vimānā; nyāsthāya sarve jvalitāgnikalpāḥ। antarhitāstvāṃ pratipālayanti; kāṣṭhāṃ prapadyantam udakpataṅgam ॥12-51-15॥
[एते (ete) - these; हि (hi) - indeed; देवा (devā) - gods; वसवः (vasavaḥ) - Vasus; विमानाः (vimānāḥ) - celestial chariots; न्यास्थाय (nyāsthāya) - having descended; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ज्वलिताग्निकल्पाः (jvalitāgnikalpāḥ) - like blazing fire; अन्तर्हिताः (antarhitāḥ) - invisible; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; प्रतिपालयन्ति (pratipālayanti) - are watching; काष्ठाम् (kāṣṭhām) - log; प्रपद्यन्तम् (prapadyantam) - approaching; उदक्पतङ्गम् (udakpataṅgam) - water-insect;]
(These indeed gods Vasus celestial chariots having descended all like blazing fire invisible you are watching log approaching water-insect.)
These Vasus, the gods, having descended in their celestial chariots, all like blazing fire, invisible, are watching you, as you approach the log like a water-insect.
व्यावृत्तमात्रे भगवत्युदीचीं; सूर्ये दिशं कालवशात्प्रपन्ने। गन्तासि लोकान्पुरुषप्रवीर; नावर्तते यानुपलभ्य विद्वान् ॥१२-५१-१६॥
vyāvṛttamātre bhagavatyudīcīṃ; sūrye diśaṃ kālavaśātprapanne. gantāsi lokānpuruṣapravīra; nāvartate yānupalabhya vidvān ॥12-51-16॥
[व्यावृत्तमात्रे (vyāvṛttamātre) - when withdrawn only; भगवति (bhagavati) - in the blessed; उदीचीं (udīcīṃ) - northern; सूर्ये (sūrye) - in the sun; दिशं (diśaṃ) - direction; कालवशात् (kālavaśāt) - by the force of time; प्रपन्ने (prapanne) - having entered; गन्तासि (gantāsi) - you will go; लोकान् (lokān) - to the worlds; पुरुषप्रवीर (puruṣapravīra) - O best among men; नावर्तते (nāvartate) - does not return; यम् (yam) - whom; उपलभ्य (upalabhya) - having attained; विद्वान् (vidvān) - the wise;]
(When only withdrawn in the blessed northern (direction), when the sun has entered the direction by the force of time, you will go to the worlds, O best among men; having attained whom, the wise does not return.)
O best among men, when the sun has entered the blessed northern direction by the force of time, you will go to those worlds which, having attained, the wise do not return from.
अमुं च लोकं त्वयि भीष्म याते; ज्ञानानि नङ्क्ष्यन्त्यखिलेन वीर। अतः स्म सर्वे त्वयि संनिकर्षं; समागता धर्मविवेचनाय ॥१२-५१-१७॥

(That world and (will be) upon you, Bhīṣma, having gone; knowledges will perish entirely, O hero. Therefore indeed all (are) upon you, proximity (having) assembled for the discussion of dharma.)
O Bhīṣma, when you depart for that world, all knowledge will entirely perish, O hero. Therefore, all have indeed assembled near you for the discussion of dharma.
तज्ज्ञातिशोकोपहतश्रुताय; सत्याभिसन्धाय युधिष्ठिराय। प्रब्रूहि धर्मार्थसमाधियुक्त; मर्थ्यं वचोऽस्यापनुदास्य शोकम् ॥१२-५१-१८॥
tajjñātiśokopahataśrutāya; satyābhisandhāya yudhiṣṭhirāya। prabrūhi dharmārthasamādhiyukta; mṛtyaṃ vaco'syāpanudāsya śokam ॥12-51-18॥
[तत् (tat) - that; ज्ञाति-शोक-उपहत-श्रुताय (jñāti-śoka-upahata-śrutāya) - whose hearing (wisdom) is afflicted by the grief of relatives; सत्य-अभिसन्धाय (satya-abhisandhāya) - to one intent on truth; युधिष्ठिराय (yudhiṣṭhirāya) - to Yudhishthira; प्रब्रूहि (prabrūhi) - speak; धर्म-अर्थ-समाधि-युक्त (dharma-artha-samādhi-yukta) - endowed with concentration on dharma and artha; मर्थ्यं (mṛtyaṃ) - mortal; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; अस्य (asya) - his; अपनुदास्य (apanudāsya) - may you dispel; शोकम् (śokam) - grief;]
