Pancharatra: The Pandavas, along with Krishna and Satyaki, purify themselves and visit Bhishma, leaving behind the army and others.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

tataḥ praviśya bhavanaṃ prasupto madhusūdanaḥ। yāmamātrāvaśeṣāyāṃ yāminyāṃ pratyabudhyata ॥12-53-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; भवनं (bhavanaṃ) - house; प्रसुप्तः (prasuptaḥ) - fallen asleep; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusūdana (epithet of Kṛṣṇa); याममात्रावशेषायाम् (yāmamātrāvaśeṣāyām) - when only a watch remained; यामिन्याम् (yāminyām) - in the night; प्रत्यबुध्यत (pratyabudhyata) - awoke;]
(Then, having entered the house, Madhusūdana fell asleep. When only a watch of the night remained, he awoke.)
Then Madhusūdana entered the house and fell asleep. He awoke when only a watch of the night was left.
स ध्यानपथमाश्रित्य सर्वज्ञानानि माधवः। अवलोक्य ततः पश्चाद्दध्यौ ब्रह्म सनातनम् ॥१२-५३-२॥
sa dhyānapatham āśritya sarvajñānāni mādhavaḥ। avalokya tataḥ paścād dadhyau brahma sanātanam ॥12-53-2॥

(He, having resorted to the path of meditation, all knowledges, Mādhava, having observed, then afterwards meditated upon the eternal Brahman.)
Mādhava, having resorted to the path of meditation and having observed all knowledges, then afterwards meditated upon the eternal Brahman.
ततः श्रुतिपुराणज्ञाः शिक्षिता रक्तकण्ठिनः। अस्तुवन्विश्वकर्माणं वासुदेवं प्रजापतिम् ॥१२-५३-३॥
tataḥ śrutipurāṇajñāḥ śikṣitā raktakaṇṭhinaḥ। astuvanviśvakarmāṇaṃ vāsudevaṃ prajāpatim ॥12-53-3॥

(Then the knowers of the Vedas and Purāṇas, well-trained, red-throated ones, praised Viśvakarman, Vāsudeva, the Lord of creatures.)
Then, those who knew the Vedas and Purāṇas, who were well-trained and red-throated, praised Viśvakarman, Vāsudeva, the Lord of all beings.
पठन्ति पाणिस्वनिकास्तथा गायन्ति गायनाः। शङ्खानकमृदङ्गांश्च प्रवाद्यन्त सहस्रशः ॥१२-५३-४॥
paṭhanti pāṇisvanikās tathā gāyanti gāyanāḥ। śaṅkhānakamṛdaṅgāṃś ca pravādyanta sahasraśaḥ ॥12-53-4॥
[पठन्ति (paṭhanti) - recite; (they) पाणिस्वनिकाः (pāṇisvanikāḥ) - hand-clappers; (they) तथा (tathā) - likewise; गायन्ति (gāyanti) - sing; (they) गायनाः (gāyanāḥ) - singers; (they) शङ्खान् (śaṅkhān) - conch-shells; (accusative plural) अनक (anaka) - drums; (they) मृदङ्गान् (mṛdaṅgān) - mridangas; (accusative plural) च (ca) - and; प्रवाद्यन्त (pravādyanta) - are sounded; (they) सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(They recite, the hand-clappers likewise, the singers sing; conch-shells, drums, and mridangas are sounded by thousands.)
The hand-clappers recite, and likewise the singers sing; conch-shells, drums, and mridangas are played by the thousands.
वीणापणववेणूनां स्वनश्चातिमनोरमः। प्रहास इव विस्तीर्णः शुश्रुवे तस्य वेश्मनः ॥१२-५३-५॥
vīṇā-paṇava-veṇūnāṃ svanaś cāti-manoramaḥ। prahāsa iva vistīrṇaḥ śuśruve tasya veśmanaḥ ॥12-53-5॥
[वीणा (vīṇā) - lute; (a stringed instrument); पणव (paṇava) - drum; (a percussion instrument); वेणूनाम् (veṇūnām) - of flutes; (wind instruments); स्वनः (svanaḥ) - sound; च (ca) - and; अति (ati) - very; exceedingly; मनो-रमः (mano-ramaḥ) - pleasing to the mind; delightful; प्रहासः (prahāsaḥ) - laughter; इव (iva) - like; as if; विस्तीर्णः (vistīrṇaḥ) - spread; extended; शुश्रुवे (śuśruve) - was heard; तस्य (tasya) - of his; his; वेश्मनः (veśmanaḥ) - of the mansion;]
(The sound of lutes, drums, and flutes, exceedingly delightful, like laughter, spread and was heard from his mansion.)
From his mansion, the exceedingly delightful sound of lutes, drums, and flutes, spreading like laughter, was heard.
तथा युधिष्ठिरस्यापि राज्ञो मङ्गलसंहिताः। उच्चेरुर्मधुरा वाचो गीतवादित्रसंहिताः ॥१२-५३-६॥
tathā yudhiṣṭhirasya api rājño maṅgala-saṁhitāḥ। ucceruḥ madhurā vācaḥ gīta-vāditra-saṁhitāḥ ॥12-53-6॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhiṣṭhira; अपि (api) - also; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; मङ्गलसंहिताः (maṅgala-saṁhitāḥ) - auspiciously joined (songs); उच्चेरुः (ucceruḥ) - arose loudly; मधुराः (madhurāḥ) - sweet; वाचः (vācaḥ) - voices; गीतवादित्रसंहिताः (gīta-vāditra-saṁhitāḥ) - joined with song and instrumental music;]
(Thus, for Yudhiṣṭhira the king also, auspiciously joined (songs) arose loudly; sweet voices joined with song and instrumental music.)
In the same way, for King Yudhiṣṭhira too, auspicious songs resounded; sweet voices accompanied by singing and instrumental music rose up.
तत उत्थाय दाशार्हः स्नातः प्राञ्जलिरच्युतः। जप्त्वा गुह्यं महाबाहुरग्नीनाश्रित्य तस्थिवान् ॥१२-५३-७॥
tata utthāya dāśārhaḥ snātaḥ prāñjalir acyutaḥ। japtvā guhyaṃ mahābāhur agnīn āśritya tasthivān ॥12-53-7॥
[तत् (tat) - then; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; दाशार्हः (dāśārhaḥ) - the descendant of the Daśārhas; स्नातः (snātaḥ) - having bathed; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta (Krishna); जप्त्वा (japtvā) - having muttered; गुह्यम् (guhyam) - the secret (mantra); महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed one; अग्नीन् (agnīn) - the fires; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; तस्थिवान् (tasthivān) - stood; ॥१२-५३-७॥ (॥12-53-7॥) -;]
(Then, having risen, the descendant of the Daśārhas, having bathed, with joined palms, Acyuta (Krishna), having muttered the secret (mantra), the mighty-armed one, having resorted to the fires, stood.)
Then Acyuta (Krishna), the mighty-armed descendant of the Daśārhas, having bathed, rose, joined his palms, muttered the secret mantra, and stood by the sacred fires.
ततः सहस्रं विप्राणां चतुर्वेदविदां तथा। गवां सहस्रेणैकैकं वाचयामास माधवः ॥१२-५३-८॥
tataḥ sahasraṃ viprāṇāṃ caturvedavidāṃ tathā। gavāṃ sahasreṇaikaikaṃ vācayāmāsa mādhavaḥ ॥12-53-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; विप्राणां (viprāṇāṃ) - of Brāhmaṇas; चतुर्वेदविदां (caturvedavidāṃ) - of those knowing the four Vedas; तथा (tathā) - also; गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; सहस्रेण (sahasreṇa) - by a thousand; एकैकं (ekaikaṃ) - each one; वाचयामास (vācayāmāsa) - caused to recite; माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Mādhava;]
(Then Mādhava caused each one of a thousand Brāhmaṇas, also those knowing the four Vedas, to recite, with a thousand cows (as gift).)

मङ्गलालम्भनं कृत्वा आत्मानमवलोक्य च। आदर्शे विमले कृष्णस्ततः सात्यकिमब्रवीत् ॥१२-५३-९॥
maṅgalālambhanaṃ kṛtvā ātmānam avalokya ca। ādarśe vimale kṛṣṇas tataḥ sātyakim abravīt ॥12-53-9॥
[मङ्गलालम्भनम् (maṅgalālambhanam) - auspicious act; (maṅgala: auspicious; ālambhana: act of taking up;) कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; अवलोक्य (avalokya) - having looked at; च (ca) - and; आदर्शे (ādarśe) - in the mirror; विमले (vimale) - clear; (pure;) कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सात्यकिम् (sātyakim) - to Sātyaki; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Having performed the auspicious act, having looked at himself in the clear mirror, Kṛṣṇa then said to Sātyaki.)
After performing the auspicious act and looking at himself in the clear mirror, Kṛṣṇa then spoke to Sātyaki.
गच्छ शैनेय जानीहि गत्वा राजनिवेशनम्। अपि सज्जो महातेजा भीष्मं द्रष्टुं युथिष्ठिरः ॥१२-५३-१०॥
gaccha śaineya jānīhi gatvā rājaniveśanam। api sajjo mahātejā bhīṣmaṃ draṣṭuṃ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥12-53-10॥
[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; शैनेय (śaineya) - son of Śini; जानीहि (jānīhi) - know; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; राजनिवेशनम् (rājaniveśanam) - royal residence; अपि (api) - whether; सज्जः (sajjaḥ) - ready; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great energy; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhīṣma; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Go, O son of Śini, know (after) having gone to the royal residence, whether the greatly energetic Yudhiṣṭhira is ready to see Bhīṣma.)
Go, O Śaineya, and find out by going to the royal residence whether the mighty Yudhiṣṭhira is prepared to visit Bhīṣma.
ततः कृष्णस्य वचनात्सात्यकिस्त्वरितो ययौ। उपगम्य च राजानं युधिष्ठिरमुवाच ह ॥१२-५३-११॥
tataḥ kṛṣṇasya vacanātsātyakistvarito yayau। upagamya ca rājānaṃ yudhiṣṭhiramuvāca ha ॥12-53-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; वचनात् (vacanāt) - from the words; सात्यकिः (sātyakiḥ) - Sātyaki; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - swiftly; ययौ (yayau) - went; उपगम्य (upagamya) - having approached; च (ca) - and; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then, from the words of Kṛṣṇa, Sātyaki swiftly went. And having approached the king Yudhiṣṭhira, he indeed said.)
Then, at Kṛṣṇa's command, Sātyaki quickly went and, approaching King Yudhiṣṭhira, spoke to him.
युक्तो रथवरो राजन्वासुदेवस्य धीमतः। समीपमापगेयस्य प्रयास्यति जनार्दनः ॥१२-५३-१२॥
yukto rathavaro rājan vāsudevasya dhīmataḥ। samīpam āpageyasya prayāsyati janārdanaḥ ॥12-53-12॥
[युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - yoked; रथवरः (rathavaraḥ) - the excellent chariot; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; समीपम् (samīpam) - near; आपगेयस्य (āpageyasya) - of the son of the river (i.e., Bhīṣma); प्रयास्यति (prayāsyati) - will proceed; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa);]
(Yoked the excellent chariot, O king, of wise Vāsudeva; near to the son of the river will proceed Janārdana.)
O king, the excellent chariot of wise Vāsudeva was yoked; Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) will proceed near to the son of the river (Bhīṣma).
भवत्प्रतीक्षः कृष्णोऽसौ धर्मराज महाद्युते। यदत्रानन्तरं कृत्यं तद्भवान्कर्तुमर्हति ॥१२-५३-१३॥
bhavatpratīkṣaḥ kṛṣṇo'sau dharmarāja mahādyute। yadatrānantaraṃ kṛtyaṃ tadbhavān kartum arhati ॥12-53-13॥
[भवत् (bhavat) - your; (addressing respectfully;) प्रतीक्षः (pratīkṣaḥ) - awaiting; expecting; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; (the name;) असौ (asau) - this; he; धर्मराज (dharmarāja) - Dharmarāja; (Yudhiṣṭhira;) महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly illustrious; (vocative;) यत् (yat) - which; what; अत्र (atra) - here; in this situation; अनन्तरं (anantaram) - immediately after; next; कृत्यं (kṛtyam) - to be done; duty; तत् (tat) - that; भवान् (bhavān) - you; (respectful;) कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; to perform; अर्हति (arhati) - are worthy; ought;]
(Kṛṣṇa, awaiting you, O Dharmarāja, O greatly illustrious one, whatever duty is to be done here next, that you ought to perform.)
O Dharmarāja, Kṛṣṇa is waiting for you, O greatly illustrious one. Whatever needs to be done next here, you should do that.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

युज्यतां मे रथवरः फल्गुनाप्रतिमद्युते। न सैनिकैश्च यातव्यं यास्यामो वयमेव हि ॥१२-५३-१४॥
yujyatāṃ me rathavaraḥ phalgunāpratimadyute। na sainikaiśca yātavyaṃ yāsyāmo vayameva hi ॥12-53-14॥
[युज्यतां (yujyatāṃ) - let be yoked; (imperative, passive) मे (me) - my; (genitive singular of aham) रथवरः (rathavaraḥ) - the excellent chariot; फल्गुन (phalguṇa) - Arjuna; (epithet) अप्रतिम (apratima) - unrivaled; (without equal) द्युत (dyuta) - splendor; (brightness) इति (iti) - thus; (end of phrase, not present in this line) न (na) - not; सैनिकैः (sainikaiḥ) - by soldiers; च (ca) - and; यातव्यम् (yātavyam) - should go; (to be gone) यास्यामः (yāsyāmaḥ) - we shall go; वयम् (vayam) - we; एव (eva) - only; indeed; हि (hi) - for; indeed;]
(Let my excellent chariot, with splendor unrivaled by Arjuna, be yoked. Not with soldiers should we go; we shall go ourselves indeed.)
Let my excellent chariot, whose brilliance rivals that of Arjuna, be yoked. We ourselves shall go, not with soldiers.
न च पीडयितव्यो मे भीष्मो धर्मभृतां वरः। अतः पुरःसराश्चापि निवर्तन्तु धनञ्जय ॥१२-५३-१५॥
na ca pīḍayitavyo me bhīṣmo dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ। ataḥ puraḥsarāś cāpi nivartantu dhanañjaya ॥12-53-15॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पीडयितव्यो (pīḍayitavyaḥ) - to be oppressed; मे (me) - by me; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; पुरःसराः (puraḥsarāḥ) - the leaders; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; निवर्तन्तु (nivartantu) - let them withdraw; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya (Arjuna);]
(Not and to be oppressed by me Bhishma of the upholders of dharma the best; therefore the leaders and also let them withdraw, O Dhananjaya.)
Bhishma, the best among the upholders of dharma, is not to be harmed by me; therefore, O Dhananjaya, let the leaders also withdraw.
अद्यप्रभृति गाङ्गेयः परं गुह्यं प्रवक्ष्यति। ततो नेच्छामि कौन्तेय पृथग्जनसमागमम् ॥१२-५३-१६॥
adyaprabhr̥ti gāṅgeyaḥ paraṃ guhyaṃ pravakṣyati. tato necchāmi kaunteya pr̥thagjanasamāgamam ॥12-53-16॥
[अद्यप्रभृति (adyaprabhr̥ti) - from today onwards; गाङ्गेयः (gāṅgeyaḥ) - son of Ganga; परम् (param) - supreme; गुह्यम् (guhyam) - secret; प्रवक्ष्यति (pravakṣyati) - will declare; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; न (na) - not; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - son of Kunti; पृथक्-जन-समागमम् (pr̥thag-jana-samāgamam) - association with other people;]
(From today onwards, the son of Ganga will declare the supreme secret. Thereafter, O son of Kunti, I do not desire association with other people.)
From this day, Bhishma (the son of Ganga) will reveal the highest secret. Therefore, O son of Kunti, I no longer wish to associate with others.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तद्वाक्यमाकर्ण्य तथा कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः। युक्तं रथवरं तस्मा आचचक्षे नरर्षभ ॥१२-५३-१७॥
tad-vākyam-ākarṇya tathā kuntī-putro dhanañjayaḥ। yuktaṃ ratha-varaṃ tasmā ācacakṣe nara-ṛṣabha ॥12-53-17॥
[तत् (tat) - that; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; आकर्ण्य (ākarṇya) - having heard; तथा (tathā) - thus; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntī-putraḥ) - Kuntī's son; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya; युक्तम् (yuktam) - yoked; रथवरम् (ratha-varam) - excellent chariot; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; आचचक्षे (ācacakṣe) - he spoke; नरर्षभ (nara-ṛṣabha) - bull among men;]
(Having heard that speech, thus Kuntī's son Dhanañjaya spoke to him, O bull among men, about the excellent chariot being yoked.)
O bull among men, having heard those words, Kuntī's son Dhanañjaya informed him that the excellent chariot was yoked.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा यमौ भीमार्जुनावपि। भूतानीव समस्तानि ययुः कृष्णनिवेशनम् ॥१२-५३-१८॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā yamau bhīmarjunāv api। bhūtānīva samastāni yayuḥ kṛṣṇaniveśanam ॥12-53-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; राजा (rājā) - king; यमौ (yamau) - the two sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva); भीम-अर्जुनौ (bhīma-arjunau) - Bhima and Arjuna; अपि (api) - also; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; इव (iva) - like; समस्तानि (samastāni) - all; ययुः (yayuḥ) - went; कृष्ण-निवेशनम् (kṛṣṇa-niveśanam) - Krishna's abode;]
(Then Yudhishthira the king, the two sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva), Bhima and Arjuna also, like all beings, went to Krishna's abode.)
Then King Yudhishthira, along with Nakula, Sahadeva, Bhima, and Arjuna, all went to Krishna's residence, just as all beings do.
आगच्छत्स्वथ कृष्णोऽपि पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु। शैनेयसहितो धीमान्रथमेवान्वपद्यत ॥१२-५३-१९॥
āgacchatsvatha kṛṣṇo'pi pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu। śaineyasahito dhīmānrathamevānvapadyata ॥12-53-19॥
[आगच्छत् (āgacchat) - coming; (from ā + gam, to come; present participle); स्व (sva) - own; (reflexive pronoun); अथ (atha) - then; (particle indicating sequence); कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; (proper noun); अपि (api) - also; (particle); पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍaveṣu) - among the Pāṇḍavas; (locative plural); महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - among the great-souled; (locative plural); शैनेय-सहितः (śaineya-sahitaḥ) - accompanied by Śaineya (Sātyaki); धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; (possessed of intelligence); रथम् (ratham) - chariot; (accusative singular); एव (eva) - only; (emphatic particle); अन्वपद्यत (anvapadyata) - ascended; (from anu + pad, to follow/ascend; imperfect tense);]
(Coming then his own, Kṛṣṇa also among the Pāṇḍavas, among the great-souled, accompanied by Śaineya, the wise one ascended only the chariot.)
Then Kṛṣṇa, accompanied by Sātyaki, also came to the great-souled Pāṇḍavas and, being wise, ascended the chariot.
रथस्थाः संविदं कृत्वा सुखां पृष्ट्वा च शर्वरीम्। मेघघोषै रथवरैः प्रययुस्ते महारथाः ॥१२-५३-२०॥
rathasthāḥ saṃvidaṃ kṛtvā sukhāṃ pṛṣṭvā ca śarvarīm। meghaghoṣai rathavaraiḥ prayayuste mahārathāḥ ॥12-53-20॥

(Standing on chariots, having consulted, having asked about the pleasant night, and with thunderous excellent chariots, those great chariot-warriors set out.)
After conferring while standing on their chariots and inquiring about the pleasant night, those great chariot-warriors set out with their thunderous, excellent chariots.
मेघपुष्पं बलाहं च सैन्यं सुग्रीवमेव च। दारुकश्चोदयामास वासुदेवस्य वाजिनः ॥१२-५३-२१॥
meghapuṣpaṃ balāhaṃ ca sainyaṃ sugrīvameva ca। dārukaścodayāmāsa vāsudevasya vājinaḥ ॥12-53-21॥

Then, O king, those horses of Vāsudeva, urged on by Dāruka, went forth, scratching the earth with the tips of their hooves.
ते ग्रसन्त इवाकाशं वेगवन्तो महाबलाः। क्षेत्रं धर्मस्य कृत्स्नस्य कुरुक्षेत्रमवातरन् ॥१२-५३-२३॥
te grasanta ivākāśaṃ vegavanto mahābalāḥ। kṣetraṃ dharmasya kṛtsnasya kurukṣetram avatāran ॥12-53-23॥

tato yayur yatra bhīṣmaḥ śaratalpagataḥ prabhuḥ। āste brahmarṣibhiḥ sārdhaṃ brahmā devagaṇairyathā ॥12-53-24॥

(Then they went where Bhīṣma, the lord, lying on a bed of arrows, remains together with the Brahmarṣis, as Brahmā with the hosts of gods.)
Then they proceeded to the place where Bhīṣma, the lord, lay on his bed of arrows, surrounded by the Brahmarṣis, just as Brahmā is surrounded by the hosts of gods.
ततोऽवतीर्य गोविन्दो रथात्स च युधिष्ठिरः। भीमो गाण्डीवधन्वा च यमौ सात्यकिरेव च ॥ ऋषीनभ्यर्चयामासुः करानुद्यम्य दक्षिणान् ॥१२-५३-२५॥
tato'vatīrya govindo rathāts ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhīmo gāṇḍīvadhanvā ca yamau sātyakireva ca ॥ ṛṣīn abhyarcayāmāsuḥ karān udyamya dakṣiṇān ॥12-53-25॥

(Then, having descended, Govinda from the chariot, he and Yudhishthira, Bhima, the wielder of Gandiva, and the two sons of Yama, and Satyaki indeed, and (all of them), having raised their right hands, worshipped the sages.)
Then Govinda, Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna (the wielder of Gandiva), Nakula and Sahadeva (the sons of Yama), and Satyaki, having descended from the chariot, raised their right hands and worshipped the sages.
स तैः परिवृतो राजा नक्षत्रैरिव चन्द्रमाः। अभ्याजगाम गाङ्गेयं ब्रह्माणमिव वासवः ॥१२-५३-२६॥
sa taiḥ parivṛto rājā nakṣatrairiva candramāḥ। abhyājagāma gāṅgeyaṃ brahmāṇamiva vāsavaḥ ॥12-53-26॥
[स (sa) - he; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; परिवृतः (parivṛtaḥ) - surrounded; राजा (rājā) - king; नक्षत्रैः (nakṣatraiḥ) - by stars; इव (iva) - like; चन्द्रमाः (candramāḥ) - moon; अभ्याजगाम (abhyājagāma) - approached; गाङ्गेयं (gāṅgeyaṃ) - Gāṅgeya (Bhīṣma, son of Ganga); ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - Brahman; इव (iva) - like; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Vāsava (Indra);]
(He, surrounded by them, the king, like the moon by stars, approached Gāṅgeya (Bhīṣma), like Vāsava (Indra) (approaches) Brahman.)
Surrounded by his followers, the king advanced towards Bhīṣma, just as the moon is surrounded by stars, or as Indra approaches Brahman.
शरतल्पे शयानं तमादित्यं पतितं यथा। ददर्श स महाबाहुर्भयादागतसाध्वसः ॥१२-५३-२७॥
śaratalpe śayānaṃ tam ādityaṃ patitaṃ yathā। dadarśa sa mahābāhur bhayād āgata-sādhvasaḥ ॥12-53-27॥
[शरतल्पे (śaratalpe) - on a bed of arrows; शयानं (śayānam) - lying; तम् (tam) - him; आदित्यम् (ādityam) - the sun-like; पतितम् (patitam) - fallen; यथा (yathā) - as; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; सः (saḥ) - he; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; आगत (āgata) - arisen; साध्वसः (sādhvasaḥ) - anxiety;]
(On a bed of arrows lying him, the sun-like, fallen as; he saw, the mighty-armed, from fear arisen anxiety.)
The mighty-armed one saw him lying on the bed of arrows, fallen like the sun, overcome with anxiety arising from fear.
