योगक्षेमो हि राष्ट्रस्य राजन्यायत्त उच्यते। योगक्षेमश्च राज्ञोऽपि समायत्तः पुरोहिते ॥१२-७५-१॥
yogakṣemo hi rāṣṭrasya rājanyāyatta ucyate। yogakṣemaśca rājño'pi samāyattaḥ purohite ॥12-75-1॥
[योगक्षेमः (yogakṣemaḥ) - acquisition and preservation; हि (hi) - indeed; राष्ट्रस्य (rāṣṭrasya) - of the kingdom; राजन्यायत्तः (rājanyāyattaḥ) - dependent on the king; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; योगक्षेमः (yogakṣemaḥ) - acquisition and preservation; च (ca) - and; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; अपि (api) - also; समायत्तः (samāyattaḥ) - dependent; पुरोहिते (purohite) - on the priest;]
(Acquisition and preservation indeed of the kingdom is said to be dependent on the king. Acquisition and preservation also of the king is dependent on the priest.)
It is said that the acquisition and preservation of the kingdom depend on the king, while the king's own acquisition and preservation depend on the priest.
यतादृष्टं भयं ब्रह्म प्रजानां शमयत्युत। दृष्टं च राजा बाहुभ्यां तद्राष्ट्रं सुखमेधते ॥१२-७५-२॥
yatādṛṣṭaṃ bhayaṃ brahma prajānāṃ śamayatyuta। dṛṣṭaṃ ca rājā bāhubhyāṃ tadrāṣṭraṃ sukhamedhate ॥12-75-2॥
[यत् (yat) - which; अदृष्टम् (adṛṣṭam) - unseen; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahmin; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of the subjects; शमयति (śamayati) - removes; उत (uta) - indeed; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; च (ca) - and; राजा (rājā) - king; बाहुभ्याम् (bāhubhyām) - by (his) arms; तत् (tat) - that; राष्ट्रम् (rāṣṭram) - kingdom; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; एधते (edhate) - thrives;]
(Which unseen fear the Brahmin removes of the subjects indeed; the seen (fear) the king by (his) arms, that kingdom happiness thrives.)
The Brahmin dispels the unseen fears of the people, while the king, by his own strength, removes the visible ones; thus, that kingdom prospers in happiness.
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। मुचुकुन्दस्य संवादं राज्ञो वैश्रवणस्य च ॥१२-७५-३॥
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। mucukundasya saṃvādaṃ rājño vaiśravaṇasya ca ॥12-75-3॥

मुचुकुन्दो विजित्येमां पृथिवीं पृथिवीपतिः। जिज्ञासमानः स्वबलमभ्ययादलकाधिपम् ॥१२-७५-४॥

(Muçukunda, having conquered this earth, the lord of the earth, desiring to know (or test) his own strength, approached the lord of Alaka.)
Muçukunda, after conquering this earth, the king, wishing to test his own strength, went to Kubera, the lord of Alaka.
ततो वैश्रवणो राजा रक्षांसि समवासृजत्। ते बलान्यवमृद्नन्तः प्राचरंस्तस्य नैरृताः ॥१२-७५-५॥
tato vaiśravaṇo rājā rakṣāṃsi samavāsṛjat। te balānyavamṛdnantaḥ prācaraṃstasya nairṛtāḥ ॥12-75-5॥

(Then Vaiśravaṇa the king completely dispatched the demons. They, crushing the forces, moved about—his followers of Nairṛta.)
Then King Vaiśravaṇa sent forth the demons, and his Nairṛta followers moved about, crushing the enemy forces.
स हन्यमाने सैन्ये स्वे मुचुकुन्दो नराधिपः। गर्हयामास विद्वांसं पुरोहितमरिंदमः ॥१२-७५-६॥
sa hanyamāne sainye sve mucukundo narādhipaḥ। garhayāmāsa vidvāṁsaṁ purohitam ariṁdamaḥ ॥12-75-6॥
[स (sa) - he; हन्यमाने (hanyamāne) - being slain; सैन्ये (sainye) - in the army; स्वे (sve) - his own; मुचुकुन्दः (mucukundaḥ) - Mucukunda; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; गर्हयामास (garhayāmāsa) - censured; विद्वांसम् (vidvāṁsam) - the learned one; पुरोहितम् (purohitam) - the priest; अरिंदमः (ariṁdamaḥ) - destroyer of enemies;]
(He, when his own army was being slain, Mucukunda the king censured the learned priest, the destroyer of enemies.)
When his own army was being destroyed, King Mucukunda, the destroyer of enemies, censured his learned priest.
तत उग्रं तपस्तप्त्वा वसिष्ठो ब्रह्मवित्तमः। रक्षांस्यपावधीत्तत्र पन्थानं चाप्यविन्दत ॥१२-७५-७॥
tata ugraṃ tapas-taptvā vasiṣṭho brahmavittamaḥ। rakṣāṃsy apāvadīt tatra panthānaṃ cāpy avindat ॥12-75-7॥
[तत् (tat) - then; उग्रम् (ugram) - intense; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तप्त्वा (taptvā) - having performed; वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; ब्रह्मवित्तमः (brahmavittamaḥ) - the foremost knower of Brahman; रक्षांसि (rakṣāṃsi) - demons; अपावधीत् (apāvadīt) - drove away; तत्र (tatra) - there; पन्थानम् (panthānam) - path; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अविन्दत् (avindat) - found;]
(Then, having performed intense austerity, Vasiṣṭha, the foremost knower of Brahman, drove away the demons there and also found the path.)

ततो वैश्रवणो राजा मुचुकुन्दमदर्शयत्। वध्यमानेषु सैन्येषु वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१२-७५-८॥
tato vaiśravaṇo rājā mucukundamadarśayat। vadhyamāneṣu sainyeṣu vacanaṃ cedamabravīt ॥12-75-8॥

(Then Vaiśravaṇa, the king, showed Mucukunda. While the armies were being slain, he also spoke this speech.)
Then King Vaiśravaṇa revealed Mucukunda and, as the armies were being destroyed, spoke these words.
त्वत्तो हि बलिनः पूर्वे राजानः सपुरोहिताः। न चैवं समवर्तंस्ते यथा त्वमिह वर्तसे ॥१२-७५-९॥
tvatto hi balinaḥ pūrve rājānaḥ sapurohitāḥ। na caivaṃ samavartaṃste yathā tvamiha vartase ॥12-75-9॥
[त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; हि (hi) - indeed; बलिनः (balinaḥ) - the powerful; पूर्वे (pūrve) - former; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; सपुरोहिताः (sapurohitāḥ) - with priests; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; समवर्तन्त (samavartanta) - conducted themselves; ते (te) - they; यथा (yathā) - as; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इह (iha) - here; वर्तसे (vartase) - conduct yourself;]
(From you indeed the powerful former kings with priests not thus conducted themselves as you here conduct yourself.)
Indeed, even the powerful kings of old with their priests did not conduct themselves here as you do.
ते खल्वपि कृतास्त्राश्च बलवन्तश्च भूमिपाः। आगम्य पर्युपासन्ते मामीशं सुखदुःखयोः ॥१२-७५-१०॥
te khalvapi kṛtāstrāś ca balavantaś ca bhūmipāḥ। āgamya paryupāsante mām īśaṃ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ ॥12-75-10॥
[ते (te) - they; खलु (khalu) - indeed; अपि (api) - also; कृतास्त्राः (kṛtāstrāḥ) - having mastered weapons; च (ca) - and; बलवन्तः (balavantaḥ) - powerful; च (ca) - and; भूमिपाः (bhūmipāḥ) - kings; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; पर्युपासन्ते (paryupāsante) - surround and serve; माम् (mām) - me; ईशम् (īśam) - as the Lord; सुखदुःखयोः (sukhaduḥkhayoḥ) - in happiness and sorrow;]
(They indeed also, having mastered weapons and being powerful kings, having come, surround and serve me, the Lord, in happiness and sorrow.)
Those kings, powerful and skilled in arms, indeed come and attend upon me, the Lord, both in happiness and in sorrow.
यद्यस्ति बाहुवीर्यं ते तद्दर्शयितुमर्हसि। किं ब्राह्मणबलेन त्वमतिमात्रं प्रवर्तसे ॥१२-७५-११॥
yadyasti bāhuvīryaṃ te taddarśayitumarhasi। kiṃ brāhmaṇabalena tvamatimātraṃ pravartase ॥12-75-11॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; अस्ति (asti) - there is; बाहु-वीर्यं (bāhu-vīryaṃ) - arm-strength; ते (te) - your; तत् (tat) - that; दर्शयितुम् (darśayitum) - to show; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; किं (kiṃ) - why; ब्राह्मण-बलेन (brāhmaṇa-balena) - by Brāhmaṇa-power; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अति-मात्रं (ati-mātraṃ) - excessively; प्रवर्तसे (pravartase) - you act;]
(If there is arm-strength (physical power) of yours, you ought to show that. Why do you act excessively by Brāhmaṇa-power?)
If you possess physical strength, you should show it. Why do you act so excessively relying on Brāhmaṇa-power?
मुचुकुन्दस्ततः क्रुद्धः प्रत्युवाच धनेश्वरम्। न्यायपूर्वमसंरब्धमसम्भ्रान्तमिदं वचः ॥१२-७५-१२॥
mucukundas tataḥ kruddhaḥ pratyuvāca dhaneśvaram। nyāyapūrvam asaṁrabdham asambhrāntam idaṁ vacaḥ ॥12-75-12॥
[मुचुकुन्दः (mucukundaḥ) - Mucukunda; (proper noun, name of a king); ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; enraged; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; spoke in return; धनेश्वरम् (dhaneśvaram) - to Dhaneśvara; (proper noun, name of a person); न्यायपूर्वम् (nyāyapūrvam) - with justice; according to law; असंरब्धम् (asaṁrabdham) - without agitation; calmly; असम्भ्रान्तम् (asambhrāntam) - unconfused; without bewilderment; इदं (idaṁ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; words;]
(Mucukunda then, angry, replied to Dhaneśvara; with justice, without agitation, unconfused, this speech.)
Then Mucukunda, though angry, calmly and justly replied these words to Dhaneśvara, without agitation or confusion.
ब्रह्मक्षत्रमिदं सृष्टमेकयोनि स्वयम्भुवा। पृथग्बलविधानं च तल्लोकं परिरक्षति ॥१२-७५-१३॥
brahmakṣatram idaṃ sṛṣṭam ekayoni svayambhuvā। pṛthag balavidhānaṃ ca tal lokaṃ parirakṣati॥12-75-13॥
[ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahmin; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - Kṣatriya; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सृष्टम् (sṛṣṭam) - created; एकयोनि (ekayoni) - of one origin; स्वयम्भुवा (svayambhuvā) - by the self-born; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; बलविधानम् (balavidhānam) - arrangement of power; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; लोकम् (lokam) - world; परिरक्षति (parirakṣati) - protects;]
(Brahmin and Kṣatriya, this (was) created of one origin by the self-born; separately, the arrangement of power also, that protects the world.)
The Brahmin and Kṣatriya were both created from a single origin by the self-born; their separate arrangements of power protect the world.
तपोमन्त्रबलं नित्यं ब्राह्मणेषु प्रतिष्ठितम्। अस्त्रबाहुबलं नित्यं क्षत्रियेषु प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥१२-७५-१४॥
tapomantrabalaṃ nityaṃ brāhmaṇeṣu pratiṣṭhitam। astrabāhubalaṃ nityaṃ kṣatriyeṣu pratiṣṭhitam ॥12-75-14॥
[तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; मन्त्र (mantra) - sacred formula; बलम् (balam) - strength; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - in the Brāhmaṇas; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - established; अस्त्र (astra) - weapon; बाहु (bāhu) - arm; बलं (balaṃ) - strength; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; क्षत्रियेषु (kṣatriyeṣu) - in the Kṣatriyas; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - established;]
(Austerity, mantra, and strength are always established in the Brāhmaṇas. Weapon, arm, and strength are always established in the Kṣatriyas.)
The power of austerity and mantra is always established among the Brāhmaṇas; the power of weapons and physical strength is always established among the Kṣatriyas.
ताभ्यां सम्भूय कर्तव्यं प्रजानां परिपालनम्। तथा च मां प्रवर्तन्तं गर्हयस्यलकाधिप ॥१२-७५-१५॥
tābhyāṃ sambhūya kartavyaṃ prajānāṃ paripālanam। tathā ca māṃ pravartantaṃ garhayasyalakādhipa ॥12-75-15॥

(By those two having united, the protection of the subjects is to be done. Thus, me acting, you blame, O lord of Alaka.)
The protection of the subjects should be carried out by those two together. Yet, while I am acting thus, you blame me, O lord of Alaka.
ततोऽब्रवीद्वैश्रवणो राजानं सपुरोहितम्। नाहं राज्यमनिर्दिष्टं कस्मैचिद्विदधाम्युत ॥१२-७५-१६॥
tato'bravīd vaiśravaṇo rājānaṃ sapurohitam। nāhaṃ rājyam anirdiṣṭaṃ kasmaicid vidadhāmy uta ॥12-75-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वैश्रवणः (vaiśravaṇaḥ) - Vaiśravaṇa; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; सपुरोहितम् (sapurohitam) - with the priest; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; अनिर्दिष्टम् (anirdiṣṭam) - not assigned; कस्मैचित् (kasmaicit) - to anyone; विदधामि (vidadhāmi) - I bestow; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Then Vaiśravaṇa said to the king with the priest: I do not indeed bestow a kingdom not assigned to anyone.)
Then Vaiśravaṇa said to the king and his priest, "I do not grant a kingdom to anyone unless it has been specifically assigned."
नाच्छिन्दे चापि निर्दिष्टमिति जानीहि पार्थिव। प्रशाधि पृथिवीं वीर मद्दत्तामखिलामिमाम् ॥१२-७५-१७॥
nācchinde cāpi nirdiṣṭamiti jānīhi pārthiva। praśādhi pṛthivīṃ vīra maddattāmakhilāmimām ॥12-75-17॥

(Do not break what is assigned, know this, O king. Govern this entire earth, O hero, given by me.)
O king, know that you must not violate what has been assigned. O hero, rule this entire earth, which has been given by me.
मुचुकुन्द उवाच॥

Mucukunda said:
नाहं राज्यं भवद्दत्तं भोक्तुमिच्छामि पार्थिव। बाहुवीर्यार्जितं राज्यमश्नीयामिति कामये ॥१२-७५-१८॥
nāhaṃ rājyaṃ bhavaddattaṃ bhoktumicchāmi pārthiva। bāhuvīryārjitaṃ rājyamaśnīyāmiti kāmaye ॥12-75-18॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; भवत्-दत्तम् (bhavat-dattam) - given by you; भोक्तुम् (bhoktum) - to enjoy; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; बाहु-वीर्य-अर्जितम् (bāhu-vīrya-arjitam) - acquired by the strength of arms; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; अश्नीयाम् (aśnīyām) - I may enjoy; इति (iti) - thus; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire;]
(Not I kingdom given by you to enjoy I desire, O king. By the strength of arms acquired kingdom I may enjoy, thus I desire.)
O king, I do not wish to enjoy a kingdom given by you. I desire to enjoy a kingdom acquired by the strength of my own arms.

ततो वैश्रवणो राजा विस्मयं परमं ययौ। क्षत्रधर्मे स्थितं दृष्ट्वा मुचुकुन्दमसम्भ्रमम् ॥१२-७५-१९॥
tato vaiśravaṇo rājā vismayaṃ paramaṃ yayau। kṣatradharme sthitaṃ dṛṣṭvā mucukundamasambhramam ॥12-75-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वैश्रवणः (vaiśravaṇaḥ) - Vaiśravaṇa; राजा (rājā) - king; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - astonishment; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; ययौ (yayau) - went (to); क्षत्रधर्मे (kṣatradharme) - in the duty of a warrior; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मुचुकुन्दम् (mucukundam) - Mucukunda; असम्भ्रमम् (asambhramam) - unagitated;]
(Then King Vaiśravaṇa went to supreme astonishment, having seen Mucukunda standing unagitated in the duty of a warrior.)
Then King Vaiśravaṇa was greatly astonished, seeing Mucukunda standing firm and unagitated in his warrior's duty.
ततो राजा मुचुकुन्दः सोऽन्वशासद्वसुन्धराम्। बाहुवीर्यार्जितां सम्यक्क्षत्रधर्ममनुव्रतः ॥१२-७५-२०॥
tato rājā mucukundaḥ so'nvaśāsad vasundharām। bāhuvīryārjitāṃ samyak kṣatradharmam anuvrataḥ ॥12-75-20॥

(Then king Mucukunda, he ruled over the earth, properly devoted to the duty of a kṣatriya, which was acquired by the strength of arms.)
Then King Mucukunda ruled the earth, faithfully upholding the kṣatriya duty, which he had rightfully gained through his own valor.
एवं यो ब्रह्मविद्राजा ब्रह्मपूर्वं प्रवर्तते। जयत्यविजितामुर्वीं यशश्च महदश्नुते ॥१२-७५-२१॥
evaṃ yo brahmavidrājā brahmapūrvaṃ pravartate। jayatyavijitāmurvīṃ yaśaśca mahadaśnute ॥12-75-21॥

(Thus, the king who is a knower of Brahman, who acts with Brahman as the foremost, conquers the unconquered earth and attains great fame.)
