युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

Yudhiṣṭhira said.
किं पार्थिवेन कर्तव्यं किं च कृत्वा सुखी भवेत्। तन्ममाचक्ष्व तत्त्वेन सर्वं धर्मभृतां वर ॥१२-११३-१॥
kiṁ pārthivena kartavyaṁ kiṁ ca kṛtvā sukhī bhavet। tanmamācakṣva tattvena sarvaṁ dharmabhṛtāṁ vara ॥12-113-1॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; पार्थिवेन (pārthivena) - by a king; कर्तव्यं (kartavyam) - to be done; किं (kiṁ) - what; च (ca) - and; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - to me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - truly; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - best;]
(What by a king is to be done, and what having done may become happy? That to me tell truly, all, O best of the upholders of dharma.)
What should a king do, and by doing what may he become happy? Please tell me all this truly, O best among the upholders of dharma.
भीष्म उवाच॥

हन्त तेऽहं प्रवक्ष्यामि शृणु कार्यैकनिश्चयम्। यथा राज्ञेह कर्तव्यं यच्च कृत्वा सुखी भवेत् ॥१२-११३-२॥
hanta te'haṃ pravakṣyāmi śṛṇu kāryaika-niścayam। yathā rājñeha kartavyaṃ yac ca kṛtvā sukhī bhavet ॥12-113-2॥
[हन्त (hanta) - indeed; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - shall declare; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; कार्य (kārya) - duty; एक (eka) - one; निश्चयम् (niścayam) - determination; यथा (yathā) - as; राज्ञे (rājñe) - to the king; इह (iha) - here; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - to be done; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; भवेत् (bhavet) - would become;]
(Indeed, to you I shall declare, listen, the one determination regarding duty; as to the king here what is to be done and which, having done, would become happy.)
Indeed, I will tell you—listen—of the one decisive duty: what should be done here for the king, and what, when done, will bring happiness.
न त्वेवं वर्तितव्यं स्म यथेदमनुशुश्रुमः। उष्ट्रस्य सुमहद्वृत्तं तन्निबोध युधिष्ठिर ॥१२-११३-३॥
na tvevaṃ vartitavyaṃ sma yathedamanuśuśrumaḥ। uṣṭrasya sumahadvṛttaṃ tannibodha yudhiṣṭhira ॥12-113-3॥
[न (na) - not; त्वेवं (tvevaṃ) - thus by you; वर्तितव्यम् (vartitavyam) - should be conducted; स्म (sma) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - as; इदम् (idam) - this; अनुशुश्रुमः (anuśuśrumaḥ) - we have heard; उष्ट्रस्य (uṣṭrasya) - of the camel; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - conduct; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - know; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhishthira;]
(Not thus by you should be conducted indeed as this we have heard. Of the camel very great conduct that know, O Yudhishthira.)
You should not act in this way as we have heard. Listen, O Yudhishthira, to the remarkable conduct of the camel.
जातिस्मरो महानुष्ट्रः प्राजापत्ययुगोद्भवः। तपः सुमहदातिष्ठदरण्ये संशितव्रतः ॥१२-११३-४॥
jātismaro mahānuṣṭraḥ prājāpatyayugodbhavaḥ। tapaḥ sumahadātiṣṭhadaraṇye saṃśitavrataḥ ॥12-113-4॥
[जातिस्मरः (jātismaraḥ) - one who remembers previous births; महानुष्ट्रः (mahānuṣṭraḥ) - great ascetic; प्राजापत्ययुगोद्भवः (prājāpatyayugodbhavaḥ) - born in the age of Prajāpati; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; अातिष्ठत् (ātiṣṭhat) - undertook; अरण्ये (araṇye) - in the forest; संशितव्रतः (saṃśitavrataḥ) - firm in vows;]
(One who remembers previous births, a great ascetic, born in the age of Prajāpati, undertook very great austerity in the forest, firm in vows.)
He, who remembered his previous births, was a great ascetic born in the age of Prajāpati. He undertook intense austerities in the forest, steadfast in his vows.
तपसस्तस्य चान्ते वै प्रीतिमानभवत्प्रभुः। वरेण छन्दयामास ततश्चैनं पितामहः ॥१२-११३-५॥
tapasas tasya cānte vai prītimān abhavat prabhuḥ। vareṇa chandhayām āsa tataś cainaṃ pitāmahaḥ ॥12-113-5॥
[तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; तस्य (tasya) - of him; च (ca) - and; अन्ते (ante) - at the end; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - full of joy; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; वरेण (vareṇa) - with a boon; छन्दयामास (chandayām āsa) - caused to choose; ततः (tataḥ) - then; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire;]
(Of austerity of him and at the end indeed full of joy became the lord. With a boon caused to choose then and him the grandsire.)
At the end of his austerity, the lord became full of joy. Then the grandsire, with a boon, caused him to choose.
उष्ट्र उवाच॥

The camel said.
भगवंस्त्वत्प्रसादान्मे दीर्घा ग्रीवा भवेदियम्। योजनानां शतं साग्रं या गच्छेच्चरितुं विभो ॥१२-११३-६॥
bhagavaṃs tvatprasādān me dīrghā grīvā bhaved iyam। yojanānāṃ śataṃ sāgraṃ yā gacchec carituṃ vibho ॥12-113-6॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; त्वत् (tvat) - your; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by grace; मे (me) - to me; दीर्घा (dīrghā) - long; ग्रीवा (grīvā) - neck; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; इयम् (iyam) - this; योजनानाम् (yojanānām) - of yojanas; शतम् (śatam) - hundred; साग्रम् (sāgram) - with remainder; या (yā) - which; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - may go; चरितुम् (caritum) - to move; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one;]
(O Lord, by your grace, may this neck of mine become long, which may go to move a hundred yojanas with remainder, O mighty one.)
O Lord, by your grace, may this neck of mine become long, so that it can travel and move a hundred yojanas and more, O mighty one.

एवमस्त्विति चोक्तः स वरदेन महात्मना। प्रतिलभ्य वरं श्रेष्ठं ययावुष्ट्रः स्वकं वनम् ॥१२-११३-७॥
evam astv iti coktaḥ sa varadena mahātmanā। pratilabhya varaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ yayāv uṣṭraḥ svakaṃ vanam ॥12-113-7॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - so; च (ca) - and; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; वरदेन (varadena) - by the boon-giver; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; प्रतिलभ्य (pratilabhya) - having obtained; वरम् (varam) - boon; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - excellent; ययौ (yayau) - went; उष्ट्रः (uṣṭraḥ) - the camel; स्वकम् (svakam) - his own; वनम् (vanam) - forest;]
(Thus let it be—so spoken, he by the boon-giver, by the great-souled one, having obtained the excellent boon, went, the camel, to his own forest.)
Thus, when the great-souled boon-giver said, "So be it," the camel, having received the excellent boon, returned to his own forest.
स चकार तदालस्यं वरदानात्स दुर्मतिः। न चैच्छच्चरितुं गन्तुं दुरात्मा कालमोहितः ॥१२-११३-८॥
sa cakāra tad ālasyaṃ varadānāt sa durmatiḥ। na ca aicchat caritum gantum durātmā kālamohitaḥ ॥12-113-8॥
[स (sa) - he; चकार (cakāra) - did; तत् (tat) - that; आलस्यं (ālasyaṃ) - laziness; वरदानात् (varadānāt) - from the boon; सः (saḥ) - he; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - wicked-minded; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ऐच्छत् (aicchat) - desired; चरितुम् (caritum) - to act; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; दुरात्मा (durātmā) - evil-souled; कालमोहितः (kālamohitaḥ) - deluded by time;]
(He did that laziness from the boon, he, the wicked-minded. And the evil-souled, deluded by time, did not desire to act or to go.)
He, having received the boon, became lazy; that wicked-minded one, deluded by time, did not wish to act or go anywhere.
स कदाचित्प्रसार्यैवं तां ग्रीवां शतयोजनाम्। चचाराश्रान्तहृदयो वातश्चागात्ततो महान् ॥१२-११३-९॥
sa kadācit prasāryaivaṃ tāṃ grīvāṃ śatayojanām। cacārāśrāntahṛdayo vātaścāgāttato mahān ॥12-113-9॥
[स (sa) - he; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; प्रसार्य (prasārya) - having stretched out; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ताम् (tām) - that (feminine, i.e., neck); ग्रीवाम् (grīvām) - neck; शतयोजनाम् (śatayojanām) - of a hundred yojanas; च (ca) - and; अश्रान्तहृदयः (aśrāntahṛdayaḥ) - with tireless heart; वातः (vātaḥ) - wind; च (ca) - and; आगात् (āgāt) - came; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(He, at some time, having thus stretched out that neck of a hundred yojanas, and with a tireless heart, the great wind also came from there.)
Once, he stretched out his neck, which was a hundred yojanas long; with tireless heart, the great wind also arose from there.
स गुहायां शिरोग्रीवं निधाय पशुरात्मनः। आस्ताथ वर्षमभ्यागात्सुमहत्प्लावयज्जगत् ॥१२-११३-१०॥
sa guhāyāṃ śirogrīvaṃ nidhāya paśurātmanaḥ। āstātha varṣam abhyāgāt sumahat plāvayaj jagat ॥12-113-10॥
[स (sa) - he; गुहायाम् (guhāyām) - in the cave; शिरः-ग्रीवम् (śiraḥ-grīvam) - head and neck; निधाय (nidhāya) - having placed; पशुः (paśuḥ) - the animal; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; आस्ताथ (āstātha) - remained; वर्षम् (varṣam) - rain; अभ्यागात् (abhyāgāt) - came; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; प्लावयत् (plāvayat) - flooding; जगत् (jagat) - the world;]
(He, having placed his head and neck of himself (like an animal) in the cave, remained. The rain came, very great, flooding the world.)
He placed his head and neck like an animal in the cave and remained there. Then a very great rain came, flooding the world.
अथ शीतपरीताङ्गो जम्बुकः क्षुच्छ्रमान्वितः। सदारस्तां गुहामाशु प्रविवेश जलार्दितः ॥१२-११३-११॥
atha śītaparītāṅgo jambukaḥ kṣucchramānvitaḥ। sadāras tāṃ guhām āśu praviveśa jalārditaḥ॥12-113-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; शीतपरीताङ्गः (śītaparītāṅgaḥ) - with body afflicted by cold; जम्बुकः (jambukaḥ) - the jackal; क्षुच्छ्रमान्वितः (kṣucchramānvitaḥ) - afflicted with hunger; सदारः (sadāraḥ) - with his wife; ताम् (tām) - that; गुहाम् (guhām) - cave; आशु (āśu) - quickly; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; जलार्दितः (jalārditaḥ) - soaked with water;]
(Then, with body afflicted by cold, the jackal, afflicted with hunger, with his wife, quickly entered that cave, soaked with water.)
Then, the jackal, shivering from cold and tormented by hunger, entered that cave quickly with his wife, his body drenched with water.
स दृष्ट्वा मांसजीवी तु सुभृशं क्षुच्छ्रमान्वितः। अभक्षयत्ततो ग्रीवामुष्ट्रस्य भरतर्षभ ॥१२-११३-१२॥
sa dṛṣṭvā māṃsajīvī tu subhṛśaṃ kṣucchramānvitaḥ। abhakṣayattato grīvāmuṣṭrasya bharatarṣabha ॥12-113-12॥
[स (sa) - he; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मांसजीवी (māṃsajīvī) - meat-eater; तु (tu) - but; सुभृशं (subhṛśam) - exceedingly; क्षुच्छ्रमान्वितः (kṣucchramānvitaḥ) - afflicted with hunger; अभक्षयत् (abhakṣayat) - ate; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ग्रीवाम् (grīvām) - neck; उष्ट्रस्य (uṣṭrasya) - of the camel; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(He, having seen, the meat-eater but exceedingly afflicted with hunger, ate then the neck of the camel, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, the meat-eater, having seen this and being exceedingly afflicted with hunger, then ate the neck of the camel.
यदा त्वबुध्यतात्मानं भक्ष्यमाणं स वै पशुः। तदा सङ्कोचने यत्नमकरोद्भृशदुःखितः ॥१२-११३-१३॥
yadā tvabudhyatātmānaṃ bhakṣyamāṇaṃ sa vai paśuḥ। tadā saṅkocane yatnamakarodbhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ ॥12-113-13॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; त्व (tva) - indeed; अबुध्यत (abudhyata) - became aware; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; भक्ष्यमाणम् (bhakṣyamāṇam) - being eaten; सः (saḥ) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; पशुः (paśuḥ) - animal; तदा (tadā) - then; सङ्कोचने (saṅkocane) - in contraction; यत्नम् (yatnam) - effort; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; भृशदुःखितः (bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ) - greatly distressed;]
(When indeed he became aware of himself being eaten, that animal then made effort in contraction, greatly distressed.)
When he realized that he himself was being eaten, the animal, greatly distressed, then made every effort to contract himself.
यावदूर्ध्वमधश्चैव ग्रीवां सङ्क्षिपते पशुः। तावत्तेन सदारेण जम्बुकेन स भक्षितः ॥१२-११३-१४॥
yāvadūrdhvamadhaścaiva grīvāṃ saṅkṣipate paśuḥ। tāvattena sadāreṇa jambukena sa bhakṣitaḥ ॥12-113-14॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; अधः (adhaḥ) - downwards; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ग्रीवाम् (grīvām) - neck; सङ्क्षिपते (saṅkṣipate) - contracts; पशुः (paśuḥ) - the animal; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; तेन (tena) - by him; सदारेण (sadāreṇa) - with his wife; जम्बुकेन (jambukena) - by the jackal; सः (saḥ) - he; भक्षितः (bhakṣitaḥ) - was eaten;]
(As long as the animal contracts its neck upwards and downwards, so long he, with his wife, was eaten by the jackal.)
As long as the animal kept contracting its neck up and down, during that time, he and his wife were devoured by the jackal.
स हत्वा भक्षयित्वा च जम्बुकोष्ट्रं ततस्तदा। विगते वातवर्षे च निश्चक्राम गुहामुखात् ॥१२-११३-१५॥
sa hatvā bhakṣayitvā ca jambukoṣṭraṃ tatastadā। vigate vātavarṣe ca niścakrāma guhāmukhāt ॥12-113-15॥
[स (sa) - he; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; भक्षयित्वा (bhakṣayitvā) - having eaten; च (ca) - and; जम्बुकोष्ट्रम् (jambukoṣṭram) - the jackal's den; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तदा (tadā) - at that time; विगते (vigate) - having ceased; वातवर्षे (vātavarṣe) - wind and rain; च (ca) - and; निश्चक्राम (niścakrāma) - came out; गुहामुखात् (guhāmukhāt) - from the cave's mouth;]
(He, having killed and eaten, and (having stayed in) the jackal's den, then at that time, when the wind and rain had ceased, and, came out from the cave's mouth.)
After killing and eating (the prey) in the jackal's den, when the wind and rain had ceased, he came out from the mouth of the cave.
एवं दुर्बुद्धिना प्राप्तमुष्ट्रेण निधनं तदा। आलस्यस्य क्रमात्पश्य महद्दोषमुपागतम् ॥१२-११३-१६॥
evaṃ durbuddhinā prāptamuṣṭreṇa nidhanaṃ tadā। ālasyasya kramāt paśya mahaddoṣam upāgatam ॥12-113-16॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; दुर्बुद्धिना (durbuddhinā) - by the one with bad intellect; प्राप्तमुष्ट्रेण (prāptamuṣṭreṇa) - by the acquired camel; निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - destruction; तदा (tadā) - then; आलस्यस्य (ālasyasya) - of laziness; क्रमात् (kramāt) - gradually; पश्य (paśya) - see; महद्दोषम् (mahaddoṣam) - great fault; उपागतम् (upāgatam) - has come;]
(Thus, by the one with bad intellect, by the acquired camel, destruction then (occurred). Of laziness, gradually, see, great fault has come.)
Thus, due to the bad intellect of the one who acquired the camel, destruction occurred then. See how, due to laziness, a great fault gradually arose.
त्वमप्येतं विधिं त्यक्त्वा योगेन नियतेन्द्रियः। वर्तस्व बुद्धिमूलं हि विजयं मनुरब्रवीत् ॥१२-११३-१७॥
tvam apy etaṃ vidhiṃ tyaktvā yogena niyatendriyaḥ। vartasva buddhimūlaṃ hi vijayaṃ manur abravīt ॥12-113-17॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; एतं (etaṃ) - this; विधिं (vidhiṃ) - procedure; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; योगेन (yogena) - by discipline; नियतेन्द्रियः (niyatendriyaḥ) - one whose senses are controlled; वर्तस्व (vartasva) - conduct yourself; बुद्धिमूलं (buddhimūlaṃ) - rooted in intellect; हि (hi) - indeed; विजयं (vijayaṃ) - victory; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(You also, having abandoned this procedure, with controlled senses by discipline, conduct yourself rooted in intellect; indeed, Manu said victory (is so).)
You too, abandoning this procedure, with your senses controlled by discipline, act with intellect as your foundation; for Manu declared that victory comes thus.
बुद्धिश्रेष्ठानि कर्माणि बाहुमध्यानि भारत। तानि जङ्घाजघन्यानि भारप्रत्यवराणि च ॥१२-११३-१८॥
buddhiśreṣṭhāni karmāṇi bāhumadhyāni bhārata। tāni jaṅghājaghanyāni bhārapratyavarāṇi ca ॥12-113-18॥
[बुद्धि (buddhi) - intellect; श्रेष्ठानि (śreṣṭhāni) - the best; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; बाहु (bāhu) - arms; मध्यानि (madhyāni) - middle ones; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तानि (tāni) - those; जङ्घा (jaṅghā) - legs; जघन्यानि (jaghanyāni) - the lowest; भार (bhāra) - burden; प्रत्यवराणि (pratyavarāṇi) - inferior; च (ca) - and;]
(Intellect-best actions are the arms-middle ones, O Bhārata. Those legs-lowest are burden-inferior and.)
O Bhārata, the actions that are best are those of the intellect; those of the arms are in the middle. The actions of the legs are the lowest and are considered inferior in bearing burdens.
राज्यं तिष्ठति दक्षस्य सङ्गृहीतेन्द्रियस्य च। गुप्तमन्त्रश्रुतवतः सुसहायस्य चानघ ॥१२-११३-१९॥
rājyaṃ tiṣṭhati dakṣasya saṅgṛhītendriyasya ca। guptamantraśrutavataḥ susahāyasya cānagha ॥12-113-19॥
[राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; दक्षस्य (dakṣasya) - of the competent; सङ्गृहीतेन्द्रियस्य (saṅgṛhītendriyasya) - of one whose senses are controlled; च (ca) - and; गुप्तमन्त्रश्रुतवतः (guptamantraśrutavataḥ) - of one who has heard and keeps secret counsel; सुसहायस्य (susahāyasya) - of one with good allies; च (ca) - and; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(The kingdom remains with the competent, with one whose senses are controlled, and with one who has heard and keeps secret counsel, with one who has good allies, and O sinless one.)
O sinless one, the kingdom endures with the competent, the self-controlled, the discreet in counsel, and one who has good allies.
परीक्ष्यकारिणोऽर्थाश्च तिष्ठन्तीह युधिष्ठिर। सहाययुक्तेन मही कृत्स्ना शक्या प्रशासितुम् ॥१२-११३-२०॥
parīkṣyakāriṇo'rthāś ca tiṣṭhantīha yudhiṣṭhira. sahāyayuktena mahī kṛtsnā śakyā praśāsitum ॥12-113-20॥
[परीक्ष्यकारिणः (parīkṣyakāriṇaḥ) - those who act after examination; अर्थाः (arthāḥ) - purposes; च (ca) - and; तिष्ठन्ति (tiṣṭhanti) - remain; इह (iha) - here; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira; सहाययुक्तेन (sahāyayuktena) - with one who is endowed with helpers; मही (mahī) - the earth; कृत्स्ना (kṛtsnā) - entire; शक्या (śakyā) - can be; प्रशासितुम् (praśāsitum) - to be governed;]
(Those purposes which are undertaken after examination remain here, O Yudhiṣṭhira; the entire earth can be governed by one who is endowed with helpers.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, only those undertakings which are carefully examined endure; with the aid of capable helpers, the entire earth can be governed.
इदं हि सद्भिः कथितं विधिज्ञैः; पुरा महेन्द्रप्रतिमप्रभाव। मयापि चोक्तं तव शास्त्रदृष्ट्या; त्वमत्र युक्तः प्रचरस्व राजन् ॥१२-११३-२१॥
idaṃ hi sadbhiḥ kathitaṃ vidhijñaiḥ; purā mahendrapratimaprabhāva. mayāpi coktaṃ tava śāstradṛṣṭyā; tvamatra yuktaḥ pracarasva rājan ॥12-113-21॥
