प्रक्षीयमाणं तं बुद्ध्वा जलस्थायं भयागमे। अब्रवीद्दीर्घदर्शी तु तावुभौ सुहृदौ तदा ॥१२-१३५-५॥

(Who indeed prevents misfortune not yet come by good policies, he does not attain doubt. Let us go to what is pleasing to you two.)

दीर्घसूत्रस्तु यस्तत्र सोऽब्रवीत्सम्यगुच्यते। न तु कार्या त्वरा यावदिति मे निश्चिता मतिः ॥१२-१३५-८॥
dīrghasūtrastu yastatra so'bravītsamyagucyate। na tu kāryā tvarā yāvaditi me niścitā matiḥ ॥12-135-8॥

(But the one who is a procrastinator there, he said properly is said. But haste should not be done as long as thus my determined thought.)

अथ सम्प्रतिपत्तिज्ञः प्राब्रवीद्दीर्घदर्शिनम्। प्राप्ते काले न मे किञ्चिन्न्यायतः परिहास्यते ॥१२-१३५-९॥
atha sampratipattijñaḥ prābravīddīrghadarśinam। prāpte kāle na me kiñcinnyāyataḥ parihāsyate ॥12-135-9॥
[अथ (atha) - then; सम्प्रतिपत्तिज्ञः (sampratipattijñaḥ) - one who knows the proper procedure; प्राब्रवीत् (prābravīt) - said; दीर्घदर्शिनम् (dīrghadarśinam) - to the farsighted one; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - when arrived; काले (kāle) - at the time; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; न्यायतः (nyāyataḥ) - rightly; परिहास्यते (parihāsyate) - will be ridiculed;]
(Then the one who knows the proper procedure said to the farsighted one: When the time arrives, nothing of mine will rightly be ridiculed.)

एवमुक्तो निराक्रामद्दीर्घदर्शी महामतिः। जगाम स्रोतसैकेन गम्भीरसलिलाशयम् ॥१२-१३५-१०॥
evam-ukto nirākrāmad dīrghadarśī mahāmatiḥ। jagāma srotasaikena gambhīrasalilāśayam ॥12-135-10॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; निराक्रामत् (nirākrāmat) - departed; दीर्घदर्शी (dīrghadarśī) - far-seeing; महामतिः (mahāmatiḥ) - great-minded one; जगाम (jagāma) - went; स्रोतसा (srotasā) - by the current; एकेन (ekena) - by one; गम्भीर (gambhīra) - deep; सलिलाशयम् (salilāśayam) - water-reservoir;]
(Thus having been addressed, the far-seeing, great-minded one departed; he went by one current to the deep water-reservoir.)

ततः प्रस्रुततोयं तं समीक्ष्य सलिलाशयम्। बबन्धुर्विविधैर्योगैर्मत्स्यान्मत्स्योपजीविनः ॥१२-१३५-११॥
tataḥ prasrutato'yaṃ taṃ samīkṣya salilāśayam। babandhur vividhair yogair matsyān matsyopajīvinaḥ ॥12-135-11॥

(Then, having observed that water-reservoir with water flowing, those living by fish bound the fishes by various means.)

विलोड्यमाने तस्मिंस्तु स्रुततोये जलाशये। अगच्छद्ग्रहणं तत्र दीर्घसूत्रः सहापरैः ॥१२-१३५-१२॥
vilōḍyamāne tasmiṃstu srutatōyē jalāśayē। agacchadgrahaṇaṃ tatra dīrghasūtraḥ sahāparaiḥ ॥12-135-12॥
[विलोड्यमाने (vilōḍyamāne) - being agitated; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तु (tu) - but; स्रुत (sruta) - flowed; तोये (tōyē) - water; जलाशये (jalāśayē) - in the reservoir; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - did not go; ग्रहणम् (grahaṇam) - catching; तत्र (tatra) - there; दीर्घसूत्रः (dīrghasūtraḥ) - the procrastinator; सह (saha) - with; अपरैः (aparaiḥ) - others;]
(While it was being agitated, in that but flowed water reservoir, the catching did not happen there by the procrastinator with others.)

उद्दानं क्रियमाणं च मत्स्यानां वीक्ष्य रज्जुभिः। प्रविश्यान्तरमन्येषामग्रसत्प्रतिपत्तिमान् ॥१२-१३५-१३॥
uddānaṃ kriyamāṇaṃ ca matsyānāṃ vīkṣya rajjubhiḥ। praviśyāntaramanyeṣām agrasat pratipattimān ॥12-135-13॥

(Having seen the lifting being done of the fishes with ropes, having entered the inside of the others, the one possessing discernment ate.)

ग्रस्तमेव तदुद्दानं गृहीत्वास्त तथैव सः। सर्वानेव तु तांस्तत्र ते विदुर्ग्रथिता इति ॥१२-१३५-१४॥

(But the procrastinator, the dull-minded, deficient in intellect, and unconscious, the deluded one has attained death, just as indeed one whose senses are afflicted.)
But the procrastinator, dull-minded, lacking intellect and awareness, is as good as dead, just like one whose senses are impaired.
एवं प्राप्ततमं कालं यो मोहान्नावबुध्यते। स विनश्यति वै क्षिप्रं दीर्घसूत्रो यथा झषः ॥१२-१३५-१७॥
evaṃ prāptatamaṃ kālaṃ yo mohānnāvabudhyate। sa vinaśyati vai kṣipraṃ dīrghasūtro yathā jhaṣaḥ ॥12-135-17॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; प्राप्ततमं (prāptatamam) - fully-arrived; कालं (kālam) - time; यः (yaḥ) - who; मोहात् (mohāt) - from delusion; न (na) - not; अवबुध्यते (avabudhyate) - perceives; सः (saḥ) - he; विनश्यति (vinaśyati) - perishes; वै (vai) - indeed; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; दीर्घसूत्रः (dīrghasūtraḥ) - procrastinator; यथा (yathā) - like; झषः (jhaṣaḥ) - fish;]
(Thus, who does not perceive the fully-arrived time due to delusion, he indeed perishes quickly, like a procrastinator (perishes) like a fish.)
He who, out of delusion, does not recognize the time when it has fully arrived, perishes quickly, just as a procrastinator perishes like a fish.
आदौ न कुरुते श्रेयः कुशलोऽस्मीति यः पुमान्। स संशयमवाप्नोति यथा सम्प्रतिपत्तिमान् ॥१२-१३५-१८॥
ādau na kurute śreyaḥ kuśalo'smīti yaḥ pumān। sa saṃśayam avāpnoti yathā sampratipattimān ॥12-135-18॥
[आदौ (ādau) - in the beginning; न (na) - not; कुरुते (kurute) - does; performs; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - auspicious act; good deed; कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - skilled; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; यः (yaḥ) - who; पुमान् (pumān) - man; person; सः (saḥ) - he; संशयम् (saṃśayam) - doubt; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; reaches; यथा (yathā) - just as; like; सम्प्रतिपत्तिमान् (sampratipattimān) - one who has right understanding;]
(In the beginning, not does auspicious act, (thinking) 'I am skilled' thus, who man; he doubt attains, just as one who has right understanding.)
A man who, thinking 'I am skilled,' does not perform a good deed at the outset, attains doubt, just like one who truly understands.
अनागतविधानं तु यो नरः कुरुते क्षमम्। श्रेयः प्राप्नोति सोऽत्यर्थं दीर्घदर्शी यथा ह्यसौ ॥१२-१३५-१९॥
anāgatavidhānaṃ tu yo naraḥ kurute kṣamam। śreyaḥ prāpnoti so'tyarthaṃ dīrghadarśī yathā hyasau ॥12-135-19॥
[अनागतविधानम् (anāgatavidhānam) - arrangement for the future; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; नरः (naraḥ) - man; कुरुते (kurute) - does; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - properly; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - prosperity; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; सः (saḥ) - he; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - exceedingly; दीर्घदर्शी (dīrghadarśī) - far-sighted; यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; असौ (asau) - that one;]
(But the man who makes proper arrangements for the future attains prosperity exceedingly, just as that one who is far-sighted indeed.)
A man who prudently plans for the future attains great prosperity, just like one who is truly far-sighted.
कलाः काष्ठा मुहूर्ताश्च दिना नाड्यः क्षणा लवाः। पक्षा मासाश्च ऋतवस्तुल्याः संवत्सराणि च ॥१२-१३५-२०॥
kalāḥ kāṣṭhā muhūrtāś ca dinā nāḍyaḥ kṣaṇā lavāḥ। pakṣā māsāś ca ṛtavas tulyāḥ saṃvatsarāṇi ca ॥12-135-20॥

(Parts (of time), wooden sticks (units of time), muhurtas (time periods), and days, nāḍis (units of time), moments, instants, fortnights, months, and seasons, equal, and years.)
Parts of time, kāṣṭhās, muhūrtas, days, nāḍis, moments, instants, fortnights, months, seasons, and years are all equal (in their respective measures).
पृथिवी देश इत्युक्तः कालः स च न दृश्यते। अभिप्रेतार्थसिद्ध्यर्थं न्यायतो यच्च तत्तथा ॥१२-१३५-२१॥
