भीष्म उवाच॥

एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच तं मुनिं जनमेजयः। गर्ह्यं भवान्गर्हयति निन्द्यं निन्दति मा भवान् ॥१२-१४७-१॥
evam-uktaḥ pratyuvāca taṃ muniṃ janamejayaḥ। garhyaṃ bhavān garhayati nindyaṃ nindati mā bhavān ॥12-147-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; तं (taṃ) - to him; मुनिं (muniṃ) - sage; जनमेजयः (janamejayaḥ) - Janamejaya; गर्ह्यम् (garhyaṃ) - blameworthy; भवान् (bhavān) - you; गर्हयति (garhayati) - blames; निन्द्यम् (nindyaṃ) - reproachable; निन्दति (nindati) - censures; मा (mā) - not; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
(Thus having been spoken, Janamejaya replied to that sage: "You blame what is blameworthy, you censure what is reproachable; do not (do so), O you.")
Thus addressed, Janamejaya replied to the sage: "You blame what is blameworthy and censure what is reproachable; please do not do so, O revered one."
धिक्कार्यं मा धिक्कुरुते तस्मात्त्वाहं प्रसादये। सर्वं हीदं स्वकृतं मे ज्वलाम्यग्नाविवाहितः ॥१२-१४७-२॥
dhikkāryaṃ mā dhikkurute tasmāttvāhaṃ prasādaye। sarvaṃ hīdaṃ svakṛtaṃ me jvalāmyagnāvivāhitaḥ ॥12-147-2॥
[धिक्कार्यं (dhikkāryam) - to be censured; मा (mā) - not; धिक्कुरुते (dhikkurute) - censures; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वा (tvā) - you; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; प्रसादये (prasādaye) - appease; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; हि (hi) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; स्वकृतं (svakṛtam) - done by oneself; मे (me) - by me; ज्वलामि (jvalāmi) - I burn; अग्नौ (agnau) - in fire; इव (iva) - like; आहितः (āhitaḥ) - placed;]
(To be censured, not censures; therefore, you, I appease. All indeed this done by oneself by me, I burn in fire like placed.)
I do not censure what is to be censured; therefore, I seek your appeasement. All this indeed is my own doing; I burn like something placed in fire.
स्वकर्माण्यभिसन्धाय नाभिनन्दति मे मनः। प्राप्तं नूनं मया घोरं भयं वैवस्वतादपि ॥१२-१४७-३॥
svakarmāṇyabhisandhāya nābhinandati me manaḥ। prāptaṃ nūnaṃ mayā ghoraṃ bhayaṃ vaivasvatādapi ॥12-147-3॥
[स्व (sva) - own; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; अभिसन्धाय (abhisandhāya) - having resolved; न (na) - not; अभिनन्दति (abhinandati) - rejoices; मे (me) - my; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; प्राप्तं (prāptaṃ) - attained; नूनं (nūnaṃ) - surely; मया (mayā) - by me; घोरं (ghoraṃ) - terrible; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; वैवस्वतात् (vaivasvatāt) - from Vaivasvata (Yama, god of death); अपि (api) - even;]
(Having resolved upon my own actions, my mind does not rejoice. Surely, I have attained terrible fear, even from Vaivasvata (Yama, god of death).)
My mind, having resolved to perform my own actions, does not feel joy. Surely, I have encountered a terrible fear, even greater than that from Vaivasvata, the god of death.
तत्तु शल्यमनिर्हृत्य कथं शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम्। सर्वमन्यून्विनीय त्वमभि मा वद शौनक ॥१२-१४७-४॥
tattu śalyamanirhṛtya kathaṃ śakṣyāmi jīvitum। sarvamanyūnviniya tvamabhi mā vada śaunaka ॥12-147-4॥
[तत् (tat) - that; तु (tu) - but; शल्यम् (śalyam) - thorn; (metaphorically: pain, grief;) अनिर्हृत्य (anirhṛtya) - not having removed; कथम् (katham) - how; शक्ष्यामि (śakṣyāmi) - shall I be able; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अन्यून् (anyūn) - inferior ones; विनीय (vinīya) - having set aside; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अभि (abhi) - to; towards; मा (mā) - not; वद (vada) - speak; शौनक (śaunaka) - O Śaunaka;]
(But that thorn not having removed, how shall I be able to live? All inferior ones having set aside, you to me do not speak, O Śaunaka.)
But how can I live without removing that thorn? Set aside all lesser matters and do not speak to me of them, O Śaunaka.
महानसं ब्राह्मणानां भविष्याम्यर्थवान्पुनः। अस्तु शेषं कुलस्यास्य मा पराभूदिदं कुलम् ॥१२-१४७-५॥
mahānasaṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ bhaviṣyāmyarthavān punaḥ। astu śeṣaṃ kulasyāsya mā parābhūdidam kulam ॥12-147-5॥
[महानसं (mahānasaṃ) - great kitchen; ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I shall become; अर्थवान् (arthavān) - prosperous; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; शेषं (śeṣaṃ) - remainder; कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the family; अस्य (asya) - of this; मा (mā) - not; पराभूत् (parābhūt) - be defeated; इदं (idam) - this; कुलम् (kulam) - family;]
(I shall become the great kitchen of the Brāhmaṇas, prosperous again. Let the remainder of this family be; let not this family be defeated.)
I will again become the great kitchen for the Brāhmaṇas, prosperous. Let the rest of this family remain; may this family not be defeated.
न हि नो ब्रह्मशप्तानां शेषो भवितुमर्हति। श्रुतीरलभमानानां संविदं वेदनिश्चयात् ॥१२-१४७-६॥
na hi no brahmaśaptānāṃ śeṣo bhavitumarhati। śrutīralabhamānānāṃ saṃvidaṃ vedaniścayāt ॥12-147-6॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; नो (no) - of us; ब्रह्मशप्तानाम् (brahmaśaptānām) - of those cursed by Brahman; शेषः (śeṣaḥ) - remnant; भवितुम् (bhavitum) - to be; अर्हति (arhati) - is fit; श्रुतिः (śrutiḥ) - revelation; अलभमानानाम् (alabhamānānām) - of those not obtaining; संविदम् (saṃvidam) - consciousness; वेदनिश्चयात् (vedaniścayāt) - from the certainty of the Veda;]
(Not indeed of us, of those cursed by Brahman, a remnant is fit to be. Revelation, of those not obtaining consciousness, from the certainty of the Veda.)
Indeed, for us who are cursed by Brahman, no remnant is fit to remain. For those who do not attain consciousness, revelation is determined by the certainty of the Veda.
निर्विद्यमानः सुभृशं भूयो वक्ष्यामि साम्प्रतम्। भूयश्चैवाभिनङ्क्षन्ति निर्धर्मा निर्जपा इव ॥१२-१४७-७॥
nirvidyamānaḥ subhṛśaṃ bhūyo vakṣyāmi sāmpratam। bhūyaścaivābhinaṅkṣanti nirdharmā nirjapā iva ॥12-147-7॥
[निर्विद्यमानः (nirvidyamānaḥ) - becoming disillusioned; सुभृशं (subhṛśam) - very much; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall speak; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - at present; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अभिनङ्क्षन्ति (abhinaṅkṣanti) - they blame; निर्धर्माः (nirdharmāḥ) - devoid of dharma; निर्जपाः (nirjapāḥ) - devoid of japa; इव (iva) - like;]
(Becoming disillusioned very much, I shall speak again at present. Again, indeed, those devoid of dharma and devoid of japa blame, like (such people).)
Now, being greatly disillusioned, I will speak again. Moreover, those who are without dharma and without japa are always blaming, just like such people.
अर्वाक्च प्रतितिष्ठन्ति पुलिन्दशबरा इव। न ह्ययज्ञा अमुं लोकं प्राप्नुवन्ति कथञ्चन ॥१२-१४७-८॥
arvākca pratitiṣṭhanti pulindaśabarā iva। na hyayajñā amuṃ lokaṃ prāpnuvanti kathaṃcana ॥12-147-8॥
[अर्वाक् (arvāk) - towards here; च (ca) - and; प्रतितिष्ठन्ति (pratitiṣṭhanti) - stand firmly; पुलिन्दशबरा (pulindaśabarāḥ) - Pulindas and Śabaras; इव (iva) - like; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अयज्ञाः (ayajñāḥ) - those who do not perform sacrifice; अमुं (amuṃ) - that; लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; प्राप्नुवन्ति (prāpnuvanti) - attain; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Towards here and stand firmly like Pulindas and Śabaras; not indeed those who do not perform sacrifice that world attain in any way.)
Just as Pulindas and Śabaras remain here, those who do not perform sacrifices do not attain that world in any way.
अविज्ञायैव मे प्रज्ञां बालस्येव सुपण्डितः। ब्रह्मन्पितेव पुत्रेभ्यः प्रति मां वाञ्छ शौनक ॥१२-१४७-९॥
avijñāyaiva me prajñāṃ bālasyeva supaṇḍitaḥ। brahmanpiteva putrebhyaḥ prati māṃ vāñcha śaunaka ॥12-147-9॥
[अविज्ञायैव (avijñāyaiva) - without knowing indeed; मे (me) - my; प्रज्ञां (prajñām) - wisdom; बालस्येव (bālasya iva) - like a child's; सुपण्डितः (supaṇḍitaḥ) - a learned man; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; पितेव (pita iva) - like a father; पुत्रेभ्यः (putrebhyaḥ) - to sons; प्रति (prati) - towards; मां (mām) - me; वाञ्छ (vāñcha) - wish; शौनक (śaunaka) - O Śaunaka;]
(Indeed, without knowing my wisdom, a learned man, like a child, O Brāhmaṇa, wish towards me like a father to sons, O Śaunaka.)
O Śaunaka, O Brāhmaṇa, without knowing my wisdom, even a learned man may wish towards me as a father does to his sons, like a child.
शौनक उवाच॥

किमाश्चर्यं यतः प्राज्ञो बहु कुर्याद्धि साम्प्रतम्। इति वै पण्डितो भूत्वा भूतानां नोपतप्यति ॥१२-१४७-१०॥
kimāścaryaṃ yataḥ prājño bahu kuryāddhi sāmpratam। iti vai paṇḍito bhūtvā bhūtānāṃ nopatapyati ॥12-147-10॥
[किम् (kim) - what; आश्चर्यं (āścaryam) - wonder; यतः (yataḥ) - because; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - wise person; बहु (bahu) - much; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would do; हि (hi) - indeed; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - at present; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed; पण्डितः (paṇḍitaḥ) - learned one; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; न (na) - not; उपतप्यति (upatapyati) - grieves;]
(What wonder, because the wise person would indeed do much at present. Thus, indeed, having become a learned one, he does not grieve for beings.)
What is surprising in this, since a wise person indeed does much at the present time? Thus, having become learned, he does not grieve for beings.
प्रज्ञाप्रासादमारुह्य अशोच्यः शोचते जनान्। जगतीस्थानिवाद्रिस्थः प्रज्ञया प्रतिपश्यति ॥१२-१४७-११॥
prajñā-prāsāda-māruhya aśocyaḥ śocate janān। jagatī-sthān iva adri-sthaḥ prajñayā pratipaśyati ॥12-147-11॥
[प्रज्ञा (prajñā) - wisdom; प्रासाद (prāsāda) - palace; मारुह्य (māruhya) - having ascended; अशोच्यः (aśocyaḥ) - one who should not be grieved for; शोचते (śocate) - grieves; जनान् (janān) - people; जगतीस्थान् (jagatī-sthān) - those situated on the earth; इव (iva) - like; अद्रिस्थः (adri-sthaḥ) - one situated on a mountain; प्रज्ञया (prajñayā) - by wisdom; प्रतिपश्यति (pratipaśyati) - observes;]
(Having ascended the palace of wisdom, one who should not be grieved for grieves for people. Like one situated on a mountain observes those situated on the earth, he observes by wisdom.)
Having ascended the palace of wisdom, the wise man grieves for those who should not be grieved for. Just as one standing on a mountain observes those on the earth, so too does he observe with wisdom.
न चोपलभते तत्र न च कार्याणि पश्यति। निर्विण्णात्मा परोक्षो वा धिक्कृतः सर्वसाधुषु ॥१२-१४७-१२॥
na copalabhate tatra na ca kāryāṇi paśyati। nirviṇṇātmā parokṣo vā dhikkṛtaḥ sarvasādhuṣu ॥12-147-12॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; उपलभते (upalabhate) - perceives; (from upa-labh, to obtain, perceive) तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; कार्याणि (kāryāṇi) - actions; (plural of kārya, things to be done) पश्यति (paśyati) - sees; निर्विण्णात्मा (nirviṇṇātmā) - disheartened in spirit; (nirviṇṇa-ātman, whose mind is dejected) परोक्षः (parokṣaḥ) - indifferent; (literally: not directly involved, unseen) वा (vā) - or; धिक्कृतः (dhikkṛtaḥ) - condemned; सर्वसाधुषु (sarvasādhuṣu) - among all the virtuous; (locative plural);]
(He neither perceives there nor sees actions. Disheartened in spirit, indifferent or condemned among all the virtuous.)
He neither perceives nor sees any actions there. With a disheartened spirit, whether indifferent or condemned, he is among all the virtuous.
विदित्वोभयतो वीर्यं माहात्म्यं वेद आगमे। कुरुष्वेह महाशान्तिं ब्रह्मा शरणमस्तु ते ॥१२-१४७-१३॥
viditvobhayato vīryaṃ māhātmyaṃ veda āgame। kuruṣveha mahāśāntiṃ brahmā śaraṇamastu te ॥12-147-13॥
[विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; उभयतः (ubhayataḥ) - from both sides; वीर्यं (vīryam) - strength; माहात्म्यं (māhātmyaṃ) - greatness; वेद (veda) - Veda; आगमे (āgame) - in the scripture; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; इह (iha) - here; महाशान्तिं (mahāśāntiṃ) - great peace; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; अस्तु (astu) - may it be; ते (te) - for you;]
(Having known the strength and greatness from both sides in the Veda and scripture, do here great peace; may Brahmā be the refuge for you.)
Having understood the strength and greatness from both the Veda and the scriptures, perform here the act of great peace; may Brahmā be your refuge.
तद्वै पारत्रिकं चारु ब्राह्मणानामकुप्यताम्। अथ चेत्तप्यसे पापैर्धर्मं चेदनुपश्यसि ॥१२-१४७-१४॥
tad vai pāratrikaṃ cāru brāhmaṇānām akupyatām। atha cet tapyase pāpair dharmaṃ ced anupaśyasi ॥12-147-14॥
[तत् (tat) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; पारत्रिकम् (pāratrikam) - otherworldly; चारु (cāru) - dear; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; अकुप्यताम् (akupyatām) - should not be disturbed; अथ (atha) - then; चेत् (cet) - if; तप्यसे (tapyase) - you are tormented; पापैः (pāpaiḥ) - by sins; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; चेत् (cet) - if; अनुपश्यसि (anupaśyasi) - you perceive;]
(That indeed is otherworldly, dear, of the Brāhmaṇas, should not be disturbed. Then, if you are tormented by sins, if you perceive dharma.)
That which is otherworldly and dear to the Brāhmaṇas should not be disturbed. But if you are afflicted by sins and perceive dharma, then (act accordingly).
जनमेजय उवाच॥

अनुतप्ये च पापेन न चाधर्मं चराम्यहम्। बुभूषुं भजमानं च प्रतिवाञ्छामि शौनक ॥१२-१४७-१५॥
anutapye ca pāpena na cādharmam carāmyaham। bubhūṣum bhajamānaṃ ca prativāñchāmi śaunaka ॥12-147-15॥

O Śaunaka, I do not repent for sin, nor do I act unrighteously. I wish for one who desires to live and seeks (the good life).

छित्त्वा स्तम्भं च मानं च प्रीतिमिच्छामि ते नृप। सर्वभूतहिते तिष्ठ धर्मं चैव प्रतिस्मर ॥१२-१४७-१६॥
chittvā stambhaṃ ca mānaṃ ca prītim icchāmi te nṛpa। sarvabhūtahite tiṣṭha dharmaṃ caiva pratismara ॥12-147-16॥
[छित्त्वा (chittvā) - having cut off; स्तम्भं (stambhaṃ) - pride; च (ca) - and; मानं (mānaṃ) - arrogance; च (ca) - and; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - affection; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; ते (te) - from you; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; सर्वभूतहिते (sarvabhūtahite) - in the welfare of all beings; तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stand; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - dharma; चैव (caiva) - and also; प्रतिस्मर (pratismara) - remember repeatedly;]
(Having cut off pride and arrogance, I desire affection from you, O king. Stand in the welfare of all beings, and also remember dharma repeatedly.)
O king, after abandoning pride and arrogance, I wish for your affection. Remain established in the welfare of all beings and always remember dharma.
न भयान्न च कार्पण्यान्न लोभात्त्वामुपाह्वये। तां मे देवा गिरं सत्यां शृण्वन्तु ब्राह्मणैः सह ॥१२-१४७-१७॥
na bhayānna ca kārpaṇyānna lobhāttvāmupāhvaye। tāṃ me devā giraṃ satyāṃ śṛṇvantu brāhmaṇaiḥ saha ॥12-147-17॥
[न (na) - not; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; कार्पण्यात् (kārpaṇyāt) - from misery; न (na) - not; लोभात् (lobhāt) - from greed; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; उपाह्वये (upāhvaye) - I invoke; ताम् (tām) - that; मे (me) - my; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; गिरम् (giram) - speech; सत्याम् (satyām) - true; शृण्वन्तु (śṛṇvantu) - may hear; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by the Brāhmaṇas; सह (saha) - together;]
(Not from fear, nor from misery, nor from greed do I invoke you. That my true speech may the gods hear together with the Brāhmaṇas.)
I do not invoke you out of fear, misery, or greed. May the gods, together with the Brāhmaṇas, hear my true words.
सोऽहं न केनचिच्चार्थी त्वां च धर्ममुपाह्वये। क्रोशतां सर्वभूतानामहो धिगिति कुर्वताम् ॥१२-१४७-१८॥
so'ham na kenacic cārthī tvām ca dharmam upāhvaye। krośatāṃ sarvabhūtānām aho dhig iti kurvatām ॥12-147-18॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; केनचित् (kenacit) - by anyone; च (ca) - and; अर्थी (arthī) - seeker (of benefit); त्वाम् (tvām) - you; च (ca) - and; धर्मम् (dharmam) - Dharma; उपाह्वये (upāhvaye) - I invoke; क्रोशताम् (krośatām) - of those who cry out; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; अहो (aho) - ah!; धिक् (dhik) - shame!; इति (iti) - thus; कुर्वताम् (kurvatām) - of those who do (say);]
(He I not by anyone seeker (of benefit) you and Dharma I invoke; of those who cry out of all beings ah! shame! thus of those who do (say);)
I am not a seeker of benefit from anyone; I invoke you, Dharma. Of those who cry out among all beings, ah! shame on those who act thus.
वक्ष्यन्ति मामधर्मज्ञा वक्ष्यन्त्यसुहृदो जनाः। वाचस्ताः सुहृदः श्रुत्वा सञ्ज्वरिष्यन्ति मे भृशम् ॥१२-१४७-१९॥
vakṣyanti mām adharmajñā vakṣyanty asuhṛdo janāḥ। vācas tāḥ suhṛdaḥ śrutvā sañjvariṣyanti me bhṛśam ॥12-147-19॥

(Those who know unrighteousness will speak of me, enemies, people will speak. Those words, friends, having heard, will be greatly agitated for me.)
Those who know unrighteousness and enemies among the people will speak of me. When my friends hear those words, they will be greatly agitated for my sake.
केचिदेव महाप्राज्ञाः परिज्ञास्यन्ति कार्यताम्। जानीहि मे कृतं तात ब्राह्मणान्प्रति भारत ॥१२-१४७-२०॥
kecideva mahāprājñāḥ parijñāsyanti kāryatām। jānīhi me kṛtaṃ tāta brāhmaṇānprati bhārata ॥12-147-20॥

(Some indeed greatly wise ones will fully understand the import. Know my deed, O dear one, regarding the Brāhmaṇas, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, know that only some truly wise ones will fully understand the import of my deed towards the Brāhmaṇas, dear one.
यथा ते मत्कृते क्षेमं लभेरंस्तत्तथा कुरु। प्रतिजानीहि चाद्रोहं ब्राह्मणानां नराधिप ॥१२-१४७-२१॥
yathā te matkṛte kṣemaṃ labheraṃstattathā kuru। pratijānīhi cādrohaṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ narādhipa ॥12-147-21॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; as; in which manner; ते (te) - for you; to you; मत्कृते (matkṛte) - for my sake; on account of me; क्षेमं (kṣemaṃ) - welfare; safety; security; लभेरं (labheraṃ) - they may obtain; they might gain; तत्तथा (tattathā) - so thus; in that way; कुरु (kuru) - do; perform; प्रतिजानीहि (pratijānīhi) - promise; affirm; च (ca) - and; अद्रोहं (adrohaṃ) - non-injury; non-harm; absence of hostility; ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānāṃ) - of the Brāhmaṇas; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; lord of men;]
(Just as for you, for my sake, welfare they may obtain, so thus do. Promise also non-injury to the Brāhmaṇas, O king.)
Act in such a way that, for my sake, they may obtain welfare as you desire. Also, O king, promise not to harm the Brāhmaṇas.

naiva vācā na manasā na punar jātu karmaṇā। drogdhāsmi brāhmaṇān vipra caraṇāveva te spṛśe ॥12-147-22॥

(Not indeed by speech, not by mind, nor ever again by action will I harm the Brāhmaṇas; O sage, I indeed touch your feet.)
I will never again harm the Brāhmaṇas by speech, mind, or action; O sage, I truly touch your feet.
