ईहमानः समारम्भान्यदि नासादयेद्धनम्। धनतृष्णाभिभूतश्च किं कुर्वन्सुखमाप्नुयात् ॥१२-१७१-१॥
īhamānaḥ samārambhān yadi nāsādayed dhanam। dhana-tṛṣṇā-abhibhūtaś ca kiṃ kurvan sukham āpnuyāt ॥12-171-1॥

(Striving in undertakings, if one does not attain wealth, and being overpowered by desire for wealth, what happiness could one obtain by doing (so)?)
If a person strives in undertakings but does not attain wealth, and is overpowered by the desire for wealth, what happiness could he possibly achieve by such actions?

सर्वसाम्यमनायासः सत्यवाक्यं च भारत। निर्वेदश्चाविवित्सा च यस्य स्यात्स सुखी नरः ॥१२-१७१-२॥
sarvasāmyamanāyāsaḥ satyavākyaṃ ca bhārata। nirvedaścāvivitsā ca yasya syātsa sukhī naraḥ ॥12-171-2॥
[सर्वसाम्यम् (sarvasāmyaṃ) - complete equality; अनायासः (anāyāsaḥ) - absence of effort; सत्यवाक्यम् (satyavākyam) - truthful speech; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; निर्वेदः (nirvedaḥ) - dispassion; च (ca) - and; अविवित्सा (avivitsā) - absence of desire to acquire; च (ca) - and; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; स्यात् (syāt) - there is; सः (saḥ) - he; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(Complete equality, absence of effort, truthful speech, and, O Bhārata, dispassion and absence of desire to acquire, and of whom there is—he is a happy man.)
O Bhārata, that man is happy in whom there is complete equality, absence of effort, truthful speech, dispassion, and no desire to acquire.
एतान्येव पदान्याहुः पञ्च वृद्धाः प्रशान्तये। एष स्वर्गश्च धर्मश्च सुखं चानुत्तमं सताम् ॥१२-१७१-३॥
etānyeva padānyāhuḥ pañca vṛddhāḥ praśāntaye। eṣa svargaśca dharmaśca sukhaṃ cānuttamaṃ satām ॥12-171-3॥
[एतानि (etāni) - these; (neuter plural) एव (eva) - indeed; only; पदानि (padāni) - steps; words; positions; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they have said; पञ्च (pañca) - five; वृद्धाः (vṛddhāḥ) - elders; wise ones; प्रशान्तये (praśāntaye) - for the pacification; for tranquility; एष (eṣa) - this; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; च (ca) - and; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; law; च (ca) - and; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; च (ca) - and; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; highest; सताम् (satām) - of the good; of the virtuous;]
(These indeed steps they have said five elders for pacification. This heaven and righteousness and happiness and unsurpassed of the good.)
The elders have said that these five steps are indeed for attaining tranquility. For the virtuous, this is heaven, righteousness, happiness, and the highest (state).
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। निर्वेदान्मङ्किना गीतं तन्निबोध युधिष्ठिर ॥१२-१७१-४॥
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। nirvedān maṅkinā gītaṃ tan nibodha yudhiṣṭhira ॥12-171-4॥

ईहमानो धनं मङ्किर्भग्नेहश्च पुनः पुनः। केनचिद्धनशेषेण क्रीतवान्दम्यगोयुगम् ॥१२-१७१-५॥
īhamāno dhanaṃ maṅkir bhagnehaś ca punaḥ punaḥ। kenacid dhanaśeṣeṇa krītavān damyagoyugam ॥12-171-5॥

Maṅki, repeatedly striving for wealth even after his hopes were dashed, used what little wealth remained to buy a pair of draught oxen.
सुसम्बद्धौ तु तौ दम्यौ दमनायाभिनिःसृतौ। आसीनमुष्ट्रं मध्येन सहसैवाभ्यधावताम् ॥१२-१७१-६॥

(Well-bound but those two reins for restraining, having rushed forth, at the sitting camel, through the middle, suddenly indeed, they rushed at.)
But those two well-bound reins, having rushed forth for restraining, suddenly rushed at the sitting camel through the middle.
तयोः सम्प्राप्तयोरुष्ट्रः स्कन्धदेशममर्षणः। उत्थायोत्क्षिप्य तौ दम्यौ प्रससार महाजवः ॥१२-१७१-७॥
tayoḥ samprāptayoruṣṭraḥ skandhadeśamamārṣaṇaḥ। utthāyotkṣipya tau damyau prasasāra mahājavaḥ ॥12-171-7॥

(Of those two having arrived, the camel, not tolerating (it), having risen, having lifted up those two reins, he of great speed drove (on).)
When those two arrived, the camel, unable to tolerate it, rose up, lifted the two reins, and the one of great speed drove on.
ह्रियमाणौ तु तौ दम्यौ तेनोष्ट्रेण प्रमाथिना। म्रियमाणौ च सम्प्रेक्ष्य मङ्किस्तत्राब्रवीदिदम् ॥१२-१७१-८॥
hriyamāṇau tu tau damyau tenoṣṭreṇa pramāthinā। mriyamāṇau ca samprekṣya maṅkistatabravīdidam ॥12-171-8॥
[ह्रियमाणौ (hriyamāṇau) - being carried away; तु (tu) - but; तौ (tau) - those two; दम्यौ (damyau) - the animals to be tamed; तेन (tena) - by that; उष्ट्रेण (uṣṭreṇa) - by the camel; प्रमाथिना (pramāthinā) - by the violent one; म्रियमाणौ (mriyamāṇau) - being about to die; च (ca) - and; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; मङ्किः (maṅkiḥ) - Maṅki; तत्र (tatra) - there; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(Being carried away, but those two animals to be tamed by that violent camel, and seeing (them) being about to die, Maṅki there said this.)
But when those two animals to be tamed were being carried away by that violent camel and were about to die, Maṅki, seeing this, spoke these words there.
न चैवाविहितं शक्यं दक्षेणापीहितुं धनम्। युक्तेन श्रद्धया सम्यगीहां समनुतिष्ठता ॥१२-१७१-९॥
na caivaāvihitaṃ śakyaṃ dakṣeṇāpīhituṃ dhanam। yuktena śraddhayā samyagīhāṃ samanutiṣṭhatā ॥12-171-9॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अविहितम् (avihitam) - not prescribed; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; दक्षेण (dakṣeṇa) - by the skillful; अपि (api) - even; ईहितुम् (īhitum) - to obtain; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; युक्तेन (yuktena) - by one who is disciplined; श्रद्धया (śraddhayā) - with faith; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; ईहाम् (īhām) - effort; समनुतिष्ठता (samanutiṣṭhatā) - by performing;]
(Not indeed is unprescribed wealth possible to be obtained even by the skillful; by one who is disciplined, with faith, properly performing effort.)
Wealth that is not prescribed cannot be obtained even by the skillful; only one who is disciplined, acts with faith, and puts forth proper effort can succeed.
कृतस्य पूर्वं चानर्थैर्युक्तस्याप्यनुतिष्ठतः। इमं पश्यत सङ्गत्या मम दैवमुपप्लवम् ॥१२-१७१-१०॥
kṛtasya pūrvaṃ cānarthairyuktasyāpyanutiṣṭhataḥ। imaṃ paśyata saṅgatyā mama daivamupaplavam ॥12-171-10॥

See, by association, this calamity of my fate, arising from what has been done before and from misfortunes, even though endowed (with wisdom) but not following.
उद्यम्योद्यम्य मे दम्यौ विषमेणेव गच्छति। उत्क्षिप्य काकतालीयमुन्माथेनेव जम्बुकः ॥१२-१७१-११॥
udyamyodyamya me damyau viṣameṇeva gacchati। utkṣipya kākatālīyamunmātheneva jambukaḥ ॥12-171-11॥
[उद्यम्य (udyamya) - having raised; उद्यम्य (udyamya) - having raised; मे (me) - my; दम्यौ (damyau) - the two oxen; विषमेण (viṣameṇa) - on uneven (ground); इव (iva) - like; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; उत्क्षिप्य (utkṣipya) - having lifted; काकतालीयम् (kākatālīyam) - by chance; उन्माथेन (unmāthena) - by an upturning; इव (iva) - like; जम्बुकः (jambukaḥ) - the jackal;]
(Having raised and raised my two oxen goes as if on uneven (ground); having lifted, the jackal by chance by an upturning, as if.)
My two oxen, when repeatedly raised, move as if on uneven ground; the jackal, having been lifted by chance by an upturning, likewise.
मणी वोष्ट्रस्य लम्बेते प्रियौ वत्सतरौ मम। शुद्धं हि दैवमेवेदमतो नैवास्ति पौरुषम् ॥१२-१७१-१२॥
maṇī voṣṭrasya lambete priyau vatsatarau mama। śuddhaṃ hi daivamevedamato naivāsti pauruṣam ॥12-171-12॥
[मणी (maṇī) - jewel; वोष्ट्रस्य (voṣṭrasya) - of the camel; लम्बेते (lambete) - hang (dual); प्रियौ (priyau) - dear (dual); वत्सतरौ (vatsatarau) - two calves; मम (mama) - my; शुद्धं (śuddham) - pure; हि (hi) - indeed; दैवम् (daivam) - fate; एव (eva) - only; इदम् (idam) - this; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्ति (asti) - is; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - human effort;]
(The jewel of the camel hangs, the two calves dear to me. Indeed, this is pure fate only, therefore there is indeed no human effort.)
The camel's jewel hangs down, and my two beloved calves are lost. Truly, this is entirely due to fate; therefore, there is no place for human effort here.
यदि वाप्युपपद्येत पौरुषं नाम कर्हिचित्। अन्विष्यमाणं तदपि दैवमेवावतिष्ठते ॥१२-१७१-१३॥
yadi vāpyupapadyeta pauruṣaṃ nāma karhicit| anviṣyamāṇaṃ tadapi daivamevāvatiṣṭhate ॥12-171-13॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; उपपद्येत (upapadyeta) - were to arise; पौरुषं (pauruṣam) - human effort; नाम (nāma) - so-called; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - at any time; अन्विष्यमाणं (anviṣyamāṇam) - being sought; तद् (tad) - that; अपि (api) - even; दैवम् (daivam) - fate; एव (eva) - alone; अवतिṣ्ठते (avatiṣṭhate) - remains;]
(If even at any time so-called human effort were to arise, even that, being sought, fate alone remains.)
Even if so-called human effort arises at any time, when sought, it is fate alone that prevails.
तस्मान्निर्वेद एवेह गन्तव्यः सुखमीप्सता। सुखं स्वपिति निर्विण्णो निराशश्चार्थसाधने ॥१२-१७१-१४॥
tasmānnirveda eveha gantavyaḥ sukhāmīpsatā। sukhaṃ svapiti nirviṇṇo nirāśaścārthasādhane ॥12-171-14॥

(Therefore, indeed here, dispassion is to be attained by one desiring happiness. The disenchanted and hopeless one sleeps happily in the pursuit of objects.)
Therefore, one who desires happiness should attain dispassion here. The one who is disenchanted and hopeless sleeps happily even in the pursuit of worldly objects.
अहो सम्यक्षुकेनोक्तं सर्वतः परिमुच्यता। प्रतिष्ठता महारण्यं जनकस्य निवेशनात् ॥१२-१७१-१५॥
aho samyakṣukenoktaṃ sarvataḥ parimucyatā। pratiṣṭhatā mahāraṇyaṃ janakasya niveśanāt ॥12-171-15॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; सम्यक् (samyak) - well; षुकेन (ṣukena) - by Śuka; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; परिमुच्यता (parimucyatā) - be released; प्रतिष्ठता (pratiṣṭhatā) - proceed; महारण्यं (mahāraṇyaṃ) - great forest; जनकस्य (janakasya) - of Janaka; निवेशनात् (niveśanāt) - from the abode;]

यः कामान्प्राप्नुयात्सर्वान्यश्चैनान्केवलांस्त्यजेत्। प्रापणात्सर्वकामानां परित्यागो विशिष्यते ॥१२-१७१-१६॥
yaḥ kāmān prāpnuyāt sarvān yaś ca enān kevalān tyajet। prāpaṇāt sarva-kāmānām parityāgaḥ viśiṣyate ॥12-171-16॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - might obtain; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; एतान् (enān) - these; केवलान् (kevalān) - only; त्यजेत् (tyajet) - might abandon; प्रापणात् (prāpaṇāt) - than obtaining; सर्वकामानाम् (sarva-kāmānām) - of all desires; परित्यागः (parityāgaḥ) - renunciation; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is superior;]
(Who might obtain all desires and who might abandon these only desires; than obtaining all desires, renunciation is superior.)
He who may obtain all desires and he who may abandon these very desires; renunciation is considered superior to the attainment of all desires.
नान्तं सर्वविवित्सानां गतपूर्वोऽस्ति कश्चन। शरीरे जीविते चैव तृष्णा मन्दस्य वर्धते ॥१२-१७१-१७॥
nāntaṃ sarvavivitsānāṃ gatapūrvo'sti kaścana। śarīre jīvite caiva tṛṣṇā mandasya vardhate ॥12-171-17॥
[न (na) - not; अन्तम् (antam) - end; सर्वविवित्सानाम् (sarvavivitsānām) - of all desires to know; (sarva: all; vivitsā: desire to know; -nām: of;) गतपूर्वः (gatapūrvaḥ) - gone before; (gata: gone; pūrvaḥ: before;) अस्ति (asti) - there is; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; शरीरे (śarīre) - in the body; जीविते (jīvite) - in life; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तृष्णा (tṛṣṇā) - desire; thirst; मन्दस्य (mandasya) - of the dull; of the slow; वर्धते (vardhate) - grows; increases;]
(There is not an end to all desires to know that anyone has gone before. In the body and in life indeed, the desire of the dull grows.)
No one has ever reached the end of all desires to know. In the body and in life, the desire of the dull indeed increases.
निवर्तस्व विवित्साभ्यः शाम्य निर्विद्य मामक। असकृच्चासि निकृतो न च निर्विद्यसे तनो ॥१२-१७१-१८॥
nivartasva vivitsābhyaḥ śāmya nirvidya māmaka। asakṛc cāsi nikṛto na ca nirvidyase tano ॥12-171-18॥

(Turn back from those desiring to know, be calm, having become indifferent to mine. Repeatedly you are deceived and yet you do not become indifferent, O child.)
Turn away from those who seek knowledge, calm yourself, and become indifferent to what is mine. Though you are repeatedly deceived, you do not become indifferent, O child.
यदि नाहं विनाश्यस्ते यद्येवं रमसे मया। मा मां योजय लोभेन वृथा त्वं वित्तकामुक ॥१२-१७१-१९॥
yadi nāhaṃ vināśyaste yady evaṃ ramase mayā। mā māṃ yojaya lobhena vṛthā tvaṃ vittakāmuka ॥12-171-19॥

(If I am not to be destroyed by you, if thus you enjoy with me, do not join me with greed in vain, you wealth-desiring one.)
If I am not to be destroyed by you, and if you truly enjoy being with me, then do not unite with me out of greed in vain, O seeker of wealth.
सञ्चितं सञ्चितं द्रव्यं नष्टं तव पुनः पुनः। कदा विमोक्ष्यसे मूढ धनेहां धनकामुक ॥१२-१७१-२०॥
sañcitaṃ sañcitaṃ dravyaṃ naṣṭaṃ tava punaḥ punaḥ। kadā vimokṣyase mūḍha dhanehāṃ dhanakāmuka ॥12-171-20॥
[सञ्चितं (sañcitaṃ) - accumulated; सञ्चितं (sañcitaṃ) - accumulated; द्रव्यं (dravyaṃ) - wealth; नष्टं (naṣṭaṃ) - lost; तव (tava) - your; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; कदा (kadā) - when; विमोक्ष्यसे (vimokṣyase) - will you be freed; मूढ (mūḍha) - deluded one; धनेहां (dhanehāṃ) - for wealth; धनकामुक (dhanakāmuka) - wealth-desiring;]
(Accumulated, accumulated wealth is lost of yours again and again. When will you be freed, deluded one, from desire for wealth, O wealth-desiring?)
You keep accumulating wealth, but it is lost again and again. O deluded one, when will you free yourself from the desire for wealth, O lover of riches?
अहो नु मम बालिश्यं योऽहं क्रीडनकस्तव। किं नैव जातु पुरुषः परेषां प्रेष्यतामियात् ॥१२-१७१-२१॥
aho nu mama bāliśyaṃ yo'haṃ krīḍanakas tava| kiṃ naiva jātu puruṣaḥ pareṣāṃ preṣyatām iyāt ॥12-171-21॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; नु (nu) - truly; मम (mama) - my; बालिश्यं (bāliśyaṃ) - childishness; यः (yaḥ) - who; अहम् (aham) - I; क्रीडनकः (krīḍanakaḥ) - plaything; तव (tava) - your; किम् (kim) - what; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; जातु (jātu) - ever; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; परेषाम् (pareṣām) - of others; प्रेष्यताम् (preṣyatām) - servitude; इयात् (iyāt) - should go;]
(Indeed, truly, my childishness—who am I, your plaything. What, not indeed ever should a man go to the servitude of others.)
Alas, how childish I am, that I have become your plaything! Should a man ever submit to the servitude of others?
न पूर्वे नापरे जातु कामानामन्तमाप्नुवन्। त्यक्त्वा सर्वसमारम्भान्प्रतिबुद्धोऽस्मि जागृमि ॥१२-१७१-२२॥
na pūrve nāpare jātu kāmānām-antam-āpnuvan। tyaktvā sarva-samārambhān pratibuddho'smi jāgṛmi ॥12-171-22॥

(Not the former ones, nor the later ones, ever attained the end of desires. Having abandoned all undertakings, awakened, I am, I am awake.)

नूनं ते हृदयं काम वज्रसारमयं दृधम्। यदनर्थशताविष्टं शतधा न विदीर्यते ॥१२-१७१-२३॥

(Indeed, your heart, O Kāma, is made of adamantine essence, firm, which, though afflicted by hundreds of calamities, is not broken a hundredfold.)

त्यजामि काम त्वां चैव यच्च किञ्चित्प्रियं तव। तवाहं सुखमन्विच्छन्नात्मन्युपलभे सुखम् ॥१२-१७१-२४॥

(I abandon desire, you, and indeed whatever else is dear to you; seeking happiness for you, I obtain happiness in the self.)
I renounce desire, you, and whatever else is dear to you; seeking your happiness, I find happiness within myself.
काम जानामि ते मूलं सङ्कल्पात्किल जायसे। न त्वां सङ्कल्पयिष्यामि समूलो न भविष्यसि ॥१२-१७१-२५॥
kāma jānāmi te mūlaṃ saṅkalpātkila jāyase। na tvāṃ saṅkalpayiṣyāmi samūlo na bhaviṣyasi ॥12-171-25॥

(Desire, I know your root; indeed, you arise from resolve. I will not imagine you; with the root, you will not be.)

ईहा धनस्य न सुखा लब्ध्वा चिन्ता च भूयसी। लब्धनाशो यथा मृत्युर्लब्धं भवति वा न वा ॥१२-१७१-२६॥
īhā dhanasya na sukhā labdhvā cintā ca bhūyasī। labdhanāśo yathā mṛtyurlabdhaṃ bhavati vā na vā ॥12-171-26॥
[ईहा (īhā) - effort; धनस्य (dhanasya) - of wealth; न (na) - not; सुखा (sukhā) - happiness; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; चिन्ता (cintā) - anxiety; च (ca) - and; भूयसी (bhūyasī) - greater; लब्धनाशः (labdhanāśaḥ) - loss of what is obtained; यथा (yathā) - just as; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; लब्धम् (labdham) - what is obtained; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; वा (vā) - or;]
(Effort for wealth is not happiness; having obtained (it), anxiety is greater. Loss of what is obtained is like death; what is obtained may be or may not be.)
Efforts for wealth do not bring happiness; even after obtaining it, anxiety increases. The loss of acquired wealth is like death; what is gained may remain or may not.
परेत्य यो न लभते ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्। न च तुष्यति लब्धेन भूय एव च मार्गति ॥१२-१७१-२७॥
paretya yo na labhate tato duḥkhataraṃ nu kim। na ca tuṣyati labdhena bhūya eva ca mārgati ॥12-171-27॥
[परेत्य (paretya) - having departed; (from this world); यः (yaḥ) - who; (he who); न (na) - not; लभते (labhate) - obtains; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; दुःखतरम् (duḥkhataram) - more painful; (greater sorrow); नु (nu) - indeed; किम् (kim) - what; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तुष्यति (tuṣyati) - is satisfied; लब्धेन (labdhena) - with what is obtained; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - more; (again); एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; मार्गति (mārgati) - seeks; (searches for);]
(Having departed, he who does not obtain, what indeed is more painful than that? And he is not satisfied with what is obtained, again and again he seeks.)
After departing, if one does not attain, what indeed could be more sorrowful than that? And even with what is gained, he is not satisfied, but keeps seeking more and more.
अनुतर्षुल एवार्थः स्वादु गाङ्गमिवोदकम्। मद्विलापनमेतत्तु प्रतिबुद्धोऽस्मि सन्त्यज ॥१२-१७१-२८॥
anutarṣula evārthaḥ svādu gāṅgam ivodakam। mad-vilāpanam etat tu pratibuddho'smi santyaja ॥12-171-28॥
[अनुतर्षुल (anutarṣula) - not-to-be-coveted; एव (eva) - indeed; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - object; स्वादु (svādu) - sweet; गाङ्गम् (gāṅgam) - of the Ganges; इव (iva) - like; उदकम् (udakam) - water; मद् (mad) - my; विलापनम् (vilāpanam) - lamentation; एतत् (etat) - this; तु (tu) - but; प्रतिबुद्धः (pratibuddhaḥ) - awakened; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; सन्त्यज (santyaja) - abandon;]
(Not-to-be-coveted indeed is the object, sweet like water of the Ganges. My lamentation, this but, awakened I am, abandon.)
The object is truly not to be coveted, though it is as sweet as the water of the Ganges. This lamentation of mine, now that I am awakened, I abandon.
य इमं मामकं देहं भूतग्रामः समाश्रितः। स यात्वितो यथाकामं वसतां वा यथासुखम् ॥१२-१७१-२९॥
ya imaṃ māmakaṃ dehaṃ bhūtagrāmaḥ samāśritaḥ। sa yātvito yathākāmaṃ vasatāṃ vā yathāsukham ॥12-171-29॥
[य (ya) - who; इमं (imaṃ) - this; मामकं (māmakaṃ) - my; देहं (dehaṃ) - body; भूतग्रामः (bhūtagrāmaḥ) - aggregate of beings; समाश्रितः (samāśritaḥ) - has resorted to; स (sa) - he; यातु (yātu) - may go; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; यथाकामं (yathākāmaṃ) - as he wishes; वसतां (vasatāṃ) - of those who dwell; वा (vā) - or; यथासुखम् (yathāsukham) - as is comfortable;]
(Whoever, this my body, the aggregate of beings has resorted to, let him go from here as he wishes, or let him remain as is comfortable for those who dwell.)
Whoever has taken refuge in this body of mine, let him depart from here as he wishes, or let him remain as is comfortable for those who dwell.
न युष्मास्विह मे प्रीतिः कामलोभानुसारिषु। तस्मादुत्सृज्य सर्वान्वः सत्यमेवाश्रयाम्यहम् ॥१२-१७१-३०॥

(Seeing all beings in the body, in the mind and of the self; holding intellect in yoga, essence in the Veda, mind in Brahman.)

विहरिष्याम्यनासक्तः सुखी लोकान्निरामयः। यथा मा त्वं पुनर्नैवं दुःखेषु प्रणिधास्यसि ॥१२-१७१-३२॥

(By you indeed, for me, of the one impelled, another path does not exist. Of thirst, sorrow, and the weary, indeed you, desire, are always the source.)

धननाशोऽधिकं दुःखं मन्ये सर्वमहत्तरम्। ज्ञातयो ह्यवमन्यन्ते मित्राणि च धनच्युतम् ॥१२-१७१-३४॥
dhananāśo'dhikaṃ duḥkhaṃ manye sarvamahat-taram। jñātayo hyavamanyante mitrāṇi ca dhanacyutam॥12-171-34॥

(Loss of wealth (is) excessive suffering, I think, (it is) the greatest of all. Relatives indeed disregard, and friends (also disregard) one deprived of wealth.)

(But faults by thousands of ignorances are more difficult in poverty. In wealth, even that portion of happiness which exists is produced by sufferings.)

(Wealth—thus (they say)—of him, the man, formerly, robbers strike down; (they) afflict (him) with various punishments, always disturb and.)

(Slow greed is suffering—thus it was understood by me after a long time. Whatever desire you cling to, that very thing indeed you pursue.)

(Not-knower of reality you are, child and difficult to satisfy, never satisfied, fire. Not indeed you know easy to obtain, not indeed you know difficult to obtain.)
You are ignorant of reality, childish, hard to please, insatiable like fire. You do not know what is easy to obtain, nor do you know what is difficult to obtain.
पातालमिव दुष्पूरो मां दुःखैर्योक्तुमिच्छसि। नाहमद्य समावेष्टुं शक्यः काम पुनस्त्वया ॥१२-१७१-३९॥

(Like the netherworld, difficult to fill, you wish to bind me with sufferings. Not I today to be surrounded is possible indeed again by you.)
