yayā buddhyā mahīpālo bhraṣṭaśrīr vicaren mahīm। kāladaṇḍaviniṣpiṣṭas tan me brūhi pitāmaha ॥12-216-1॥

O grandsire, tell me by what wisdom a king, deprived of his fortune and crushed by the rod of Time, should conduct himself on earth.

(Of whom indeed the wealth of the giver is not diminished at any time, that offering I do not obtain. O Brahman, tell me the offering.)
O Brahman, tell me of that offering whose giver's wealth is never diminished; I do not obtain such an offering.
स एव ह्यस्तमयते स स्म विद्योतते दिशः। स वर्षति स्म वर्षाणि यथाकालमतन्द्रितः ॥ तं बलिं नाधिगच्छामि ब्रह्मन्नाचक्ष्व मे बलिम् ॥१२-२१६-५॥

He alone sets, he alone shines in all directions. He alone sends the rains at the proper time, tirelessly. That offering I do not obtain, O Brahman; tell me about the offering.
स वायुर्वरुणश्चैव स रविः स च चन्द्रमाः। सोऽग्निस्तपति भूतानि पृथिवी च भवत्युत ॥ तं बलिं नाधिगच्छामि ब्रह्मन्नाचक्ष्व मे बलिम् ॥१२-२१६-६॥
sa vāyur varuṇaś caiva sa raviḥ sa ca candramāḥ। so'gnis tapati bhūtāni pṛthivī ca bhavaty uta॥ taṃ baliṃ nādhigacchāmi brahman nācakṣva me balim॥12-216-6॥

(He is wind, he is Varuṇa indeed, he is the sun, he is also the moon. He is fire, he burns beings, and the earth also becomes. That offering I do not obtain, O Brahman, tell me the offering.)
He is the wind, Varuṇa, the sun, and the moon; he is fire, he burns all beings, and he also becomes the earth. I do not obtain that offering, O Brahman; tell me about the offering.

नैतत्ते साधु मघवन्यदेतदनुपृच्छसि। पृष्टस्तु नानृतं ब्रूयात्तस्माद्वक्ष्यामि ते बलिम् ॥१२-२१६-७॥
naitatte sādhu maghavanyadetadanupṛcchasi। pṛṣṭastu nānṛtaṃ brūyāttasmādvakṣyāmi te balim ॥12-216-7॥
[न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; साधु (sādhu) - proper; मघवन् (maghavan) - O Maghavan (Indra); यत् (yat) - which; एतत् (etat) - this; अनुपृच्छसि (anupṛcchasi) - you ask repeatedly; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - having been asked; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; अनृतम् (anṛtam) - falsehood; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - should speak; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall tell; ते (te) - to you; बलिम् (balim) - offering;]
(Not this to you proper, O Maghavan, which this you ask repeatedly. Having been asked, but, not falsehood should speak; therefore, I shall tell to you the offering.)
O Maghavan, this is not proper for you to ask. But when asked, one should not speak falsehood; therefore, I shall tell you about the offering.
उष्ट्रेषु यदि वा गोषु खरेष्वश्वेषु वा पुनः। वरिष्ठो भविता जन्तुः शून्यागारे शचीपते ॥१२-२१६-८॥
uṣṭreṣu yadi vā goṣu khareṣvaśveṣu vā punaḥ। variṣṭho bhavitā jantuḥ śūnyāgāre śacīpate ॥12-216-8॥
[उष्ट्रेषु (uṣṭreṣu) - among camels; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; गोषु (goṣu) - among cows; खरेषु (khareṣu) - among donkeys; अश्वेषु (aśveṣu) - among horses; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; वरिष्ठः (variṣṭhaḥ) - the most excellent; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; जन्तुः (jantuḥ) - creature; शून्यागारे (śūnyāgāre) - in an empty house; शचीपते (śacīpate) - O lord of Śacī (Indra);]
(Among camels, if or among cows, among donkeys, among horses or again, the most excellent creature will be in an empty house, O lord of Śacī (Indra).)
O Indra, lord of Śacī, whether among camels, cows, donkeys, or horses, or again in an empty house, the most excellent creature will arise.

यदि स्म बलिना ब्रह्मञ्शून्यागारे समेयिवान्। हन्यामेनं न वा हन्यां तद्ब्रह्मन्ननुशाधि माम् ॥१२-२१६-९॥
yadi sma balinā brahmañ śūnyāgāre sameyivān। hanyāmenaṃ na vā hanyāṃ tad brahman anuśādhi mām ॥12-216-9॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; स्म (sma) - indeed; बलिना (balinā) - by the strong one; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; शून्यागारे (śūnyāgāre) - in an empty house; समेयिवान् (sameyivān) - having met; हन्याम् (hanyām) - I should kill; एनम् (enam) - him; न (na) - not; वा (vā) - or; हन्याम् (hanyām) - I should kill; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; अनुशाधि (anuśādhi) - instruct; माम् (mām) - me;]
(If indeed, O Brahman, having met the strong one in an empty house, should I kill him or not kill him? That, O Brahman, instruct me.)
O Brahman, if I were to meet the strong one in an empty house, should I kill him or not? Please instruct me on this, O Brahman.

मा स्म शक्र बलिं हिंसीर्न बलिर्वधमर्हति। न्यायांस्तु शक्र प्रष्टव्यस्त्वया वासव काम्यया ॥१२-२१६-१०॥
mā sma śakra baliṃ hiṃsīrna balirvadhamarhati। nyāyāṃstu śakra praṣṭavyastvayā vāsava kāmyayā ॥12-216-10॥
[मा (mā) - do not; स्म (sma) - indeed; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra (Indra); बलिं (baliṃ) - Bali (the king); हिंसीः (hiṃsīḥ) - you should harm; न (na) - not; बलिः (baliḥ) - Bali (the king); वधम् (vadham) - killing; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; न्यायान् (nyāyān) - just (means); तु (tu) - but; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra (Indra); प्रष्टव्यः (praṣṭavyaḥ) - should be asked; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वासव (vāsava) - O Vāsava (Indra); काम्यया (kāmyayā) - with desire;]
(Do not indeed, O Śakra, harm Bali; Bali does not deserve killing. But, O Śakra, you should ask by just means, O Vāsava, with desire.)
O Śakra, do not harm Bali; Bali does not deserve to be killed. Instead, O Śakra, you should question him by just means, O Vāsava, if you desire.

evamukto bhagavatā mahendraḥ pṛthivīṃ tadā। cacārairāvataskandhamadhiruhya śriyā vṛtaḥ ॥12-216-11॥

kharayonimanuprāptastuṣabhakṣo'si dānava। iyaṃ te yoniradhama śocasyāho na śocasi ॥12-216-13॥
[खर (khara) - donkey; योनिम् (yonim) - womb; अनुप्राप्तः (anuprāptaḥ) - having attained; तुष (tuṣa) - chaff; भक्षः (bhakṣaḥ) - eater; असि (asi) - you are; दानव (dānava) - demon; इयम् (iyam) - this; ते (te) - your; योनिः (yoniḥ) - birth; अधमा (adhama) - lowest; शोचस्य (śocasy) - you grieve; आहो (āho) - alas; न (na) - not; शोचसि (śocasi) - you grieve;]
(O demon, having attained the womb of a donkey, you are an eater of chaff. This is your lowest birth. Alas, you grieve, but you do not grieve.)
O demon, you have been born from a donkey and eat only chaff. This is your most degraded birth. Alas, you lament, but you do not truly grieve.
अदृष्टं बत पश्यामि द्विषतां वशमागतम्। श्रिया विहीनं मित्रैश्च भ्रष्टवीर्यपराक्रमम् ॥१२-२१६-१४॥
adṛṣṭaṃ bata paśyāmi dviṣatāṃ vaśamāgatam। śriyā vihīnaṃ mitraiśca bhraṣṭavīryaparākramam ॥12-216-14॥

(I see indeed the unseen (fate), come under the control of the enemies; deprived of fortune, by friends, and lost strength and valor.)

यत्तद्यानसहस्रेण ज्ञातिभिः परिवारितः। लोकान्प्रतापयन्सर्वान्यास्यस्मानवितर्कयन् ॥१२-२१६-१५॥
yattadyānasahasreṇa jñātibhiḥ parivāritaḥ। lokān pratāpayan sarvān yāsyasmān avitarkayan ॥12-216-15॥

(Which, that vehicle, by a thousand, by kinsmen, surrounded, worlds, shining upon, all, will go, us, without considering.)

त्वन्मुखाश्चैव दैतेया व्यतिष्ठंस्तव शासने। अकृष्टपच्या पृथिवी तवैश्वर्ये बभूव ह ॥ इदं च तेऽद्य व्यसनं शोचस्याहो न शोचसि ॥१२-२१६-१६॥
tvanmukhāś caiva daiteyā vyatiṣṭhaṁs tava śāsane। akṛṣṭapacyā pṛthivī tavaiśvarye babhūva ha ॥ idaṁ ca te'dya vyasanaṁ śocasy āho na śocasi ॥12-216-16॥

(Your-faced indeed Daityas stood in your rule. The earth, not-ploughed-grown, became in your sovereignty indeed. This and your today misfortune you grieve, oh, not you grieve.)
Even the Daityas, under your leadership, stood obedient to your rule. The earth, naturally fertile, flourished under your sovereignty. Yet today, you grieve this misfortune—oh, do you not grieve?
यदातिष्ठः समुद्रस्य पूर्वकूले विलेलिहन्। ज्ञातिभ्यो विभजन्वित्तं तदासीत्ते मनः कथम् ॥१२-२१६-१७॥
yadātiṣṭhaḥ samudrasya pūrvakūle vilelihan। jñātibhyo vibhajanvittaṃ tadāsītte manaḥ katham ॥12-216-17॥

(When you stood on the eastern shore of the ocean, licking (the lips), dividing wealth to relatives, then how was your mind?)

यत्ते सहस्रसमिता ननृतुर्देवयोषितः। बहूनि वर्षपूगानि विहारे दीप्यतः श्रिया ॥१२-२१६-१८॥
yat te sahasrasamitā nanṛtur devayoṣitaḥ। bahūni varṣapūgāni vihāre dīpyataḥ śriyā ॥12-216-18॥

For many groups of years, thousands of divine women danced for you in enjoyment, shining with splendor.
सर्वाः पुष्करमालिन्यः सर्वाः काञ्चनसप्रभाः। कथमद्य तदा चैव मनस्ते दानवेश्वर ॥१२-२१६-१९॥
sarvāḥ puṣkaramālīnyaḥ sarvāḥ kāñcanasaprabhāḥ। katham adya tadā caiva manas te dānaveśvara ॥12-216-19॥

(All lotus-garlanded, all having golden radiance. How today and then indeed is your mind, O lord of the Dānavas?)
All are adorned with lotus garlands and all shine with golden radiance. O lord of the Dānavas, how is your mind today and at that time?
छत्रं तवासीत्सुमहत्सौवर्णं मणिभूषितम्। ननृतुर्यत्र गन्धर्वाः षट्सहस्राणि सप्तधा ॥१२-२१६-२०॥
chatraṃ tavāsītsumahatsauvarṇaṃ maṇibhūṣitam। nanṛturyatra gandharvāḥ ṣaṭsahasrāṇi saptadhā ॥12-216-20॥
[छत्रम् (chatram) - umbrella; तव (tava) - your; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; सौवर्णम् (sauvarṇam) - golden; मणि (maṇi) - gem; भूषितम् (bhūṣitam) - adorned; ननृतुः (nanṛtuḥ) - danced; यत्र (yatra) - where; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; षट् (ṣaṭ) - six; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; सप्तधा (saptadhā) - in seven ways;]
(Your umbrella was very great, golden, adorned with gems. Where the Gandharvas, six thousand in seven ways, danced.)
Your umbrella was exceedingly large, made of gold, and decorated with gems. There, six thousand Gandharvas danced in seven groups.
यूपस्तवासीत्सुमहान्यजतः सर्वकाञ्चनः। यत्राददः सहस्राणामयुतानि गवां दश ॥१२-२१६-२१॥
yūpastavāsītsumahānyajataḥ sarvakāñcanaḥ। yatrādadah sahasrāṇāmayutāni gavāṃ daśa ॥12-216-21॥
[यूपः (yūpaḥ) - sacrificial post; तव (tava) - your; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; यजतः (yajataḥ) - of the sacrificer; सर्वकाञ्चनः (sarvakāñcanaḥ) - all-golden; यत्र (yatra) - where; अददः (adadaḥ) - you gave; सहस्राणाम् (sahasrāṇām) - of thousands; अयुतानि (ayutāni) - tens of thousands; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; दश (daśa) - ten;]
(The sacrificial post of yours was very great, all-golden, O sacrificer. Where you gave ten tens of thousands of cows.)
Your sacrificial post was very great and made entirely of gold, O sacrificer. There, you gave away ten times ten thousand cows.
यदा तु पृथिवीं सर्वां यजमानोऽनुपर्ययाः। शम्याक्षेपेण विधिना तदासीत्किं नु ते हृदि ॥१२-२१६-२२॥
yadā tu pṛthivīṃ sarvāṃ yajamāno'nuparyayāḥ। śamyākṣepena vidhinā tadāsītkiṃ nu te hṛdi ॥12-216-22॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; तु (tu) - but; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - earth (accusative singular); सर्वां (sarvāṃ) - all (accusative singular); यजमानः (yajamānaḥ) - the sacrificer; अनुपर्ययाः (anuparyayāḥ) - went around; शम्या (śamyā) - with the wooden peg; आक्षेपेण (ākṣepena) - by the act of throwing; विधिना (vidhinā) - by the rule; तदा (tadā) - then; असीत् (āsīt) - was; किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; ते (te) - in your; हृदि (hṛdi) - heart;]
(When but the sacrificer went around all the earth with the wooden peg by the act of throwing, by the rule, then what indeed was in your heart?)
But when the sacrificer circumambulated the entire earth with the wooden peg according to the prescribed rule, what, indeed, was in your heart at that time?
न ते पश्यामि भृङ्गारं न छत्रं व्यजनं न च। ब्रह्मदत्तां च ते मालां न पश्याम्यसुराधिप ॥१२-२१६-२३॥
na te paśyāmi bhṛṅgāraṃ na chatraṃ vyajanaṃ na ca। brahmadattāṃ ca te mālāṃ na paśyāmy asurādhipa ॥12-216-23॥

(Not your cosmetic box do I see, not parasol, fan, nor; and the garland given by Brahmā, your garland, O lord of asuras, I do not see.)
O lord of asuras, I do not see your cosmetic box, nor your parasol or fan; nor do I see the garland given by Brahmā that was yours.

न त्वं पश्यसि भृङ्गारं न छत्रं व्यजनं न च। ब्रह्मदत्तां च मे मालां न त्वं द्रक्ष्यसि वासव ॥१२-२१६-२४॥

गुहायां निहितानि त्वं मम रत्नानि पृच्छसि। यदा मे भविता कालस्तदा त्वं तानि द्रक्ष्यसि ॥१२-२१६-२५॥
guhāyāṃ nihitāni tvaṃ mama ratnāni pṛcchasi। yadā me bhavitā kālastadā tvaṃ tāni drakṣyasi ॥12-216-25॥
[गुहायाम् (guhāyām) - in the cave; निहितानि (nihitāni) - deposited; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मम (mama) - my; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - jewels; पृच्छसि (pṛcchasi) - you ask; यदा (yadā) - when; मे (me) - to me; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; तदा (tadā) - then; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तानि (tāni) - those; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see;]
(In the cave deposited you my jewels you ask. When to me will be time, then you those will see.)
You ask me about the jewels I have hidden in the cave. When the time comes for me, then you will see them.
न त्वेतदनुरूपं ते यशसो वा कुलस्य वा। समृद्धार्थोऽसमृद्धार्थं यन्मां कत्थितुमिच्छसि ॥१२-२१६-२६॥
na tv etad anurūpaṃ te yaśaso vā kulasya vā। samṛddhārtho'samṛddhārthaṃ yan māṃ katthitum icchasi ॥12-216-26॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; एतत् (etad) - this; अनुरूपम् (anurūpam) - befitting; ते (te) - your; यशसः (yaśasaḥ) - of fame; वा (vā) - or; कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the family; वा (vā) - or; समृद्धार्थः (samṛddhārthaḥ) - one who has attained prosperity; असमृद्धार्थम् (asamṛddhārtham) - one who has not attained prosperity; यत् (yat) - that; माम् (mām) - me; कत्थितुम् (katthitum) - to boast; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish;]
(But this is not befitting for you, nor for your fame or your family, that you, being prosperous, wish to boast about me, who is not prosperous.)

न हि दुःखेषु शोचन्ति न प्रहृष्यन्ति चर्द्धिषु। कृतप्रज्ञा ज्ञानतृप्ताः क्षान्ताः सन्तो मनीषिणः ॥१२-२१६-२७॥
na hi duḥkheṣu śocanti na prahṛṣyanti ca ṛddhiṣu। kṛtaprajñā jñānatṛptāḥ kṣāntāḥ santo manīṣiṇaḥ ॥12-216-27॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; दुःखेषु (duḥkheṣu) - in sufferings; शोचन्ति (śocanti) - they grieve; न (na) - not; प्रहृष्यन्ति (prahṛṣyanti) - they rejoice; च (ca) - and; ऋद्धिषु (ṛddhiṣu) - in prosperities; कृतप्रज्ञाः (kṛtaprajñāḥ) - those whose wisdom is established; ज्ञानतृप्ताः (jñānatṛptāḥ) - those satisfied with knowledge; क्षान्ताः (kṣāntāḥ) - forbearing; सन्तः (santaḥ) - good people; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - wise ones;]
(Not indeed in sufferings do they grieve, not do they rejoice in prosperities; those whose wisdom is established, satisfied with knowledge, forbearing, good people, wise ones.)
Truly, those whose wisdom is firm, who are content with knowledge, patient, virtuous, and wise, neither grieve in sorrow nor exult in prosperity.
त्वं तु प्राकृतया बुद्ध्या पुरंदर विकत्थसे। यदाहमिव भावी त्वं तदा नैवं वदिष्यसि ॥१२-२१६-२८॥
tvaṃ tu prākṛtayā buddhyā puraṃdara vikatthase। yadāhamiva bhāvī tvaṃ tadā naivaṃ vadiṣyasi ॥12-216-28॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तु (tu) - but; प्राकृतया (prākṛtayā) - with natural (ordinary); बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - intellect; पुरंदर (puraṃdara) - O Purandara (Indra); विकत्थसे (vikatthase) - you boast; यदा (yadā) - when; अहम् (aham) - I; इव (iva) - like; भावी (bhāvī) - to become; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; वदिष्यसि (vadiṣyasi) - you will speak;]
(You, but, with natural intellect, O Purandara, you boast. When you become like me, you then will not speak thus.)
But you, O Purandara, boast with an ordinary intellect. When you become like me, then you will not speak in this way.
