स दृश्यमानो रक्षोभिर्जलमध्येऽवदत्ततः। अब्रुवंश्च पिशाचास्तं नैवं त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥१२-२५३-७॥
sa dṛśyamāno rakṣobhir jalamadhye'vadattataḥ। abruvaṃś ca piśācās taṃ naivaṃ tvaṃ vaktum arhasi ॥12-253-7॥

Tulādhāra, a renowned merchant of Vārāṇasī, is also not qualified to speak in the manner that you do, O best of the twice-born.
इत्युक्तो जाजलिर्भूतैः प्रत्युवाच महातपाः। पश्येयं तमहं प्राज्ञं तुलाधारं यशस्विनम् ॥१२-२५३-९॥

kiṁ kṛtaṁ sukṛtaṁ karma tāta jājalinā purā। yena siddhiṁ parāṁ prāptas tanno vyākhyātum arhasi ॥12-253-12॥

O father, what virtuous deed did Jājali perform in the past by which he attained supreme accomplishment? Please explain that to us.

अतीव तपसा युक्तो घोरेण स बभूव ह। नद्युपस्पर्शनरतः सायं प्रातर्महातपाः ॥१२-२५३-१३॥
atīva tapasā yukto ghoreṇa sa babhūva ha। nady-upasparśana-rataḥ sāyaṃ prātar-mahātapāḥ ॥12-253-13॥

वतातपसहो ग्रीष्मे न च धर्ममविन्दत। दुःखशय्याश्च विविधा भूमौ च परिवर्तनम् ॥१२-२५३-१६॥
vatātapasaho grīṣme na ca dharmam avindata। duḥkhaśayyāś ca vividhā bhūmau ca parivartanam ॥12-253-16॥

(Having considered the sparrows on the head, Jājali, the best of those reciting, clapped then in the sky: "Dharma has indeed been attained by me.")
Jājali, the foremost among reciters, after considering the sparrows on his head, clapped his hands and declared in the sky, "Indeed, I have attained Dharma."
अथान्तरिक्षे वागासीत्तां स शुश्राव जाजलिः। धर्मेण न समस्त्वं वै तुलाधारस्य जाजले ॥१२-२५३-४२॥

वाराणस्यां महाप्राज्ञस्तुलाधारः प्रतिष्ठितः। सोऽप्येवं नार्हते वक्तुं यथा त्वं भाषसे द्विज ॥१२-२५३-४३॥
vārāṇasyāṃ mahāprājñastulādhāraḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ। so'py evaṃ nārhate vaktuṃ yathā tvaṃ bhāṣase dvija ॥12-253-43॥
[वाराणस्याम् (vārāṇasyām) - in Vārāṇasī; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - greatly wise one; तुलाधारः (tulādhāraḥ) - Tuladhaara (name); प्रतिष्ठितः (pratiṣṭhitaḥ) - established; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; एवम् (evam) - thus; न (na) - not; अर्हते (arhate) - is worthy; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; यथा (yathā) - as; त्वम् (tvam) - you; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - you speak; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born (Brahmin);]
(In Vārāṇasī, the greatly wise Tuladhara was established. He also is not worthy to speak thus as you speak, O twice-born.)

सोऽमर्षवशमापन्नस्तुलाधारदिदृक्षया। पृथिवीमचरद्राजन्यत्रसायङ्गृहो मुनिः ॥१२-२५३-४४॥
so'marṣavaśamāpannastulādhāradidṛkṣayā। pṛthivīmacaradrājanyatrasāyaṅgṛho muniḥ ॥12-253-44॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अमर्ष-वशम्-आपन्नः (amarṣa-vaśam-āpannaḥ) - under the control of impatience; तुला-धार-दिदृक्षया (tulā-dhāra-didṛkṣayā) - with the desire to see the balance beam; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; अचरत् (acarat) - wandered; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यत्र (yatra) - where; सायम्-गृहम् (sāyaṃ-gṛham) - evening home; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage;]
(He, having come under the control of impatience, with the desire to see the balance beam, wandered the earth, O king, where the sage had his evening home.)
Driven by impatience and wishing to see the balance beam, he wandered the earth, O king, to the place where the sage stayed in the evening.
कालेन महतागच्छत्स तु वाराणसीं पुरीम्। विक्रीणन्तं च पण्यानि तुलाधारं ददर्श सः ॥१२-२५३-४५॥
kālena mahatāgacchatsa tu vārāṇasīṃ purīm। vikrīṇantaṃ ca paṇyāni tulādhāraṃ dadarśa saḥ ॥12-253-45॥
[कालेन (kālena) - by time; महतā (mahatā) - by great (time); अगच्छत् (agacchat) - he went; सः (saḥ) - he; तु (tu) - but; वाराणसीं (vārāṇasīṃ) - Vārāṇasī; पुरीम् (purīm) - city; विक्रीणन्तं (vikrīṇantam) - selling; च (ca) - and; पण्यानि (paṇyāni) - goods; तुलाधारं (tulādhāraṃ) - Tulādhāra (name of a person); ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(By (the passage of) great time, he went, but he, to Vārāṇasī city. Selling and goods, Tulādhāra (he) saw, he.)
After a long time, he went to the city of Vārāṇasī. There, he saw Tulādhāra selling goods.
सोऽपि दृष्ट्वैव तं विप्रमायान्तं भाण्डजीवनः। समुत्थाय सुसंहृष्टः स्वागतेनाभ्यपूजयत् ॥१२-२५३-४६॥
so'pi dṛṣṭvaiva taṃ vipram āyāntaṃ bhāṇḍajīvanaḥ। samutthāya susaṃhṛṣṭaḥ svāgatenābhyapūjayat ॥12-253-46॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - indeed; तम् (tam) - him; विप्रम् (vipram) - brāhmaṇa; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - coming; भाण्डजीवनः (bhāṇḍajīvanaḥ) - one whose life depends on pots (a potter); समुत्थाय (samutthāya) - having risen; सुसंहृष्टः (susaṃhṛṣṭaḥ) - very delighted; स्वागतेन (svāgatena) - with welcome; अभ्यपूजयत् (abhyapūjayat) - honored; १२-२५३-४६ (12-253-46) - 12-253-46;]
(He also, having indeed seen that brāhmaṇa coming, the potter, having risen, very delighted, honored (him) with welcome.)
The potter, upon seeing the brāhmaṇa approaching, rose up joyfully and welcomed him with honor.

Tulādhāra said.
आयानेवासि विदितो मम ब्रह्मन्न संशयः। ब्रवीमि यत्तु वचनं तच्छृणुष्व द्विजोत्तम ॥१२-२५३-४७॥
āyāne vāsi vidito mama brahman na saṃśayaḥ। bravīmi yat tu vacanaṃ tac chṛṇuṣva dvijottama ॥12-253-47॥
[आयाने (āyāne) - on arrival; एव (eva) - indeed; असि (asi) - you are; विदितः (viditaḥ) - known; मम (mama) - to me; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; यत् (yat) - what; तु (tu) - but; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; तत् (tat) - that; शृणुष्व (śṛṇuṣva) - listen; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born;]
(On arrival indeed you are known to me, O Brāhmaṇa, not (is there) doubt. I speak what but word that listen, O best of twice-born.)
O Brāhmaṇa, on your arrival you have indeed become known to me, there is no doubt. Now, O best of twice-born, listen to the words I speak.
सागरानूपमाश्रित्य तपस्तप्तं त्वया महत्। न च धर्मस्य सञ्ज्ञां त्वं पुरा वेत्थ कथञ्चन ॥१२-२५३-४८॥
sāgarānūpam āśritya tapas taptaṃ tvayā mahat। na ca dharmasya sañjñāṃ tvaṃ purā vettha kathaṃcana ॥12-253-48॥
[सागरानूपम् (sāgarānūpam) - by the seashore; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तप्तम् (taptam) - practiced; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; महत् (mahat) - great; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; सञ्ज्ञाम् (sañjñām) - knowledge; त्वम् (tvam) - you; पुरा (purā) - formerly; वेत्थ (vettha) - knew; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Having resorted to the seashore, great austerity was practiced by you; and you did not know the knowledge of dharma formerly in any way.)
You performed great austerities by the seashore, but in the past you had no knowledge of dharma in any way.
ततः सिद्धस्य तपसा तव विप्र शकुन्तकाः। क्षिप्रं शिरस्यजायन्त ते च सम्भावितास्त्वया ॥१२-२५३-४९॥
tataḥ siddhasya tapasā tava vipra śakuntakāḥ। kṣipraṃ śirasyajāyanta te ca sambhāvitāstvayā ॥12-253-49॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सिद्धस्य (siddhasya) - of the accomplished; तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; तव (tava) - your; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; शकुन्तकाः (śakuntakāḥ) - birds; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; शिरसि (śirasi) - on the head; अजायन्त (ajāyanta) - were born; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; सम्भाविताः (sambhāvitāḥ) - honored; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Then, O brāhmaṇa, by your accomplished penance, birds were quickly born on the head, and they were honored by you.)
Then, O brāhmaṇa, as a result of your accomplished penance, birds quickly appeared on your head, and you honored them.
जातपक्षा यदा ते च गताश्चारीमितस्ततः। मन्यमानस्ततो धर्मं चटकप्रभवं द्विज ॥ खे वाचं त्वमथाश्रौषीर्मां प्रति द्विजसत्तम ॥१२-२५३-५०॥
jātapakṣā yadā te ca gatāścārīmitastataḥ। manyamānastato dharmaṃ caṭakaprabhavaṃ dvija ॥ khe vācaṃ tvamathāśrauṣīrmāṃ prati dvijasattama ॥12-253-50॥
[जातपक्षा (jātapakṣāḥ) - having grown wings; (i.e., fledglings;) यदा (yadā) - when; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; गताः (gatāḥ) - gone; च (ca) - and; अरिम् (arim) - enemy; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; ततः (tataḥ) - then; मन्मानः (manyamānaḥ) - thinking; ततः (tataḥ) - then; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - duty; चटकप्रभवम् (caṭakaprabhavam) - originated from the sparrow; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born (bird or Brahmin;) खे (khe) - in the sky; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अथ (atha) - then; अश्रौषीः (aśrauṣīḥ) - heard; माम् (mām) - me; प्रति (prati) - towards; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born;]
(When your fledglings had grown wings and had gone away from here and there, then, thinking thus, O twice-born, you considered the duty originating from the sparrow. Then, O best of the twice-born, you heard my speech in the sky addressed to me.)
When your young ones had grown wings and departed, you, thinking thus, considered the duty that arose from the sparrow. Then, O best of the twice-born, you heard my words in the sky addressed to me.
अमर्षवशमापन्नस्ततः प्राप्तो भवानिह। करवाणि प्रियं किं ते तद्ब्रूहि द्विजसत्तम ॥१२-२५३-५१॥
amarṣavaśam-āpannas tataḥ prāpto bhavān iha। karavāṇi priyaṃ kiṃ te tad brūhi dvijasattama ॥12-253-51॥
[अमर्ष (amarṣa) - anger; वशम् (vaśam) - control; आपन्नः (āpannaḥ) - fallen into; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - arrived; भवान् (bhavān) - you; इह (iha) - here; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - I shall do; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; किं (kiṃ) - what; ते (te) - for you; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born;]
(Having fallen under the control of anger, then you have arrived here. Tell me, O best of the twice-born, what dear thing I shall do for you, that (please) tell.)
You have come here, overcome by anger. O best of the twice-born, tell me what dear thing I should do for you.
