धर्ममर्थं च कामं च वेदाः शंसन्ति भारत। कस्य लाभो विशिष्टोऽत्र तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१२-२६३-१॥
dharmam arthaṃ ca kāmaṃ ca vedāḥ śaṃsanti bhārata। kasya lābho viśiṣṭo'tra tan me brūhi pitāmaha ॥12-263-1॥
[धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; अर्थम् (artham) - wealth; च (ca) - and; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; च (ca) - and; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - the Vedas; शंसन्ति (śaṃsanti) - declare; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; कस्य (kasya) - whose; लाभः (lābhaḥ) - gain; विशिष्टः (viśiṣṭaḥ) - distinguished; अत्र (atra) - here; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(Duty, wealth, and desire, the Vedas declare, O Bhārata; whose gain is distinguished here, that to me tell, O grandsire.)
O Bhārata, the Vedas declare duty, wealth, and desire; tell me, O grandsire, whose gain among these is considered the highest.
भीष्म उवाच॥

Bhīṣma said.
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि इतिहासं पुरातनम्। कुण्डधारेण यत्प्रीत्या भक्तायोपकृतं पुरा ॥१२-२६३-२॥
atra te vartayiṣyāmi itihāsaṃ purātanam। kuṇḍadhāreṇa yatprītyā bhaktāyopakṛtaṃ purā ॥12-263-2॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; ते (te) - to you; वर्तयिष्यामि (vartayiṣyāmi) - I shall narrate; इतिहासम् (itihāsam) - history; पुरातनम् (purātanam) - ancient; कुण्डधारेण (kuṇḍadhāreṇa) - by Kuṇḍadhāra; यत् (yat) - which; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; भक्ताय (bhaktāya) - to the devotee; उपकृतम् (upakṛtam) - was done (a favor); पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Here to you I shall narrate the ancient history; by Kuṇḍadhāra, which with affection to the devotee was done formerly.)
Here, I will tell you the ancient story of how Kuṇḍadhāra, out of affection, once bestowed a favor upon a devotee.
अधनो ब्राह्मणः कश्चित्कामाद्धर्ममवैक्षत। यज्ञार्थं स ततोऽर्थार्थी तपोऽतप्यत दारुणम् ॥१२-२६३-३॥
adhano brāhmaṇaḥ kaścit kāmād dharmam avaikṣata। yajñārthaṃ sa tato'rthārthī tapo'tapyata dāruṇam ॥12-263-3॥
[अधनः (adhanaḥ) - without wealth; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; कामात् (kāmāt) - from desire; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; अवैक्षत (avaikṣata) - sought; यज्ञार्थम् (yajñārtham) - for the sake of sacrifice; सः (saḥ) - he; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अर्थार्थी (arthārthī) - seeking wealth; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; अतप्यत (atapyata) - performed; दारुणम् (dāruṇam) - severe;]
(A certain brāhmaṇa without wealth, from desire, sought dharma. For the sake of sacrifice, he then, seeking wealth, performed severe austerity.)
A certain brāhmaṇa, lacking wealth, out of desire, sought dharma. For the sake of a sacrifice, he then, seeking wealth, undertook severe austerity.
स निश्चयमथो कृत्वा पूजयामास देवताः। भक्त्या न चैवाध्यगच्छद्धनं सम्पूज्य देवताः ॥१२-२६३-४॥
sa niścayam atho kṛtvā pūjayām āsa devatāḥ। bhaktyā na caiva adhyagacchad dhanaṃ sampūjya devatāḥ॥12-263-4॥
[स (sa) - he; निश्चयम् (niścayam) - decision; अथः (atho) - then; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; पूजयाम् (pūjayām) - to worship; आस (āsa) - began; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अध्यगच्छत् (adhyagacchat) - obtained; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having worshipped; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities;]
(He, having then made a decision, began to worship the deities. With devotion, he did not indeed obtain wealth, having worshipped the deities.)
He firmly resolved and began to worship the deities. Though he worshipped the deities with devotion, he did not obtain any wealth.
ततश्चिन्तां पुनः प्राप्तः कतमद्दैवतं नु तत्। यन्मे द्रुतं प्रसीदेत मानुषैरजडीकृतम् ॥१२-२६३-५॥
tataś cintāṃ punaḥ prāptaḥ katamaddaiivataṃ nu tat। yan me drutaṃ prasīdet mānuṣair jaḍīkṛtam ॥12-263-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; चिन्तां (cintāṃ) - thought; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; कतमत् (katamat) - which; दैवतं (daivataṃ) - deity; नु (nu) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; यत् (yat) - which; मे (me) - to me; द्रुतं (drutaṃ) - quickly; प्रसीदेत् (prasīdet) - would be pleased; मानुषैः (mānuṣaiḥ) - by men; अजडीकृतम् (ajaḍīkṛtam) - made not dull;]
(Then, again, thought attained (me): 'Which indeed is that deity which would quickly be pleased with me, made not dull by men?')
Then he again began to ponder: 'Which is that deity who, not rendered indifferent by men, would quickly be pleased with me?'
अथ सौम्येन वपुषा देवानुचरमन्तिके। प्रत्यपश्यज्जलधरं कुण्डधारमवस्थितम् ॥१२-२६३-६॥
atha saumyena vapuṣā devānucaram-antike। pratyapaśyaj-jaladharaṃ kuṇḍadhāram-avasthitam ॥12-263-6॥
[अथ (atha) - then; सौम्येन (saumyena) - with gentle; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - form; देवानुचरम् (devānucaram) - divine attendant; अन्तिके (antike) - near; प्रत्यपश्यत् (pratyapaśyat) - he saw; जलधरम् (jaladharam) - cloud; कुण्डधारम् (kuṇḍadhāram) - having streams; अवस्थितम् (avasthitam) - situated;]
(Then, with a gentle form, near the divine attendant, he saw a cloud having streams, situated.)
Then, with a gentle form, he saw near the divine attendant a cloud with streams, standing there.
दृष्ट्वैव तं महात्मानं तस्य भक्तिरजायत। अयं मे धास्यति श्रेयो वपुरेतद्धि तादृशम् ॥१२-२६३-७॥
dṛṣṭvaiva taṃ mahātmānaṃ tasya bhaktir ajāyata। ayaṃ me dhāsyati śreyo vapur etad dhi tādṛśam ॥12-263-7॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - indeed; तं (taṃ) - him; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - great-souled one; तस्य (tasya) - his; भक्तिः (bhaktiḥ) - devotion; अजायत (ajāyata) - arose; अयम् (ayam) - this; मे (me) - my; धास्यति (dhāsyati) - will bring; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - highest good; वपुः (vapuḥ) - form; एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; तादृशम् (tādṛśam) - such as this;]
(Having seen indeed that great-souled one, devotion to him arose. This form, indeed, such as this, will bring my highest good.)
Upon seeing that great-souled one, devotion to him arose in me. This very form will surely bring me the highest good.
सन्निकृष्टश्च देवस्य न चान्यैर्मानुषैर्वृतः। एष मे दास्यति धनं प्रभूतं शीघ्रमेव च ॥१२-२६३-८॥
sannikṛṣṭaś ca devasya na cānyair mānuṣair vṛtaḥ। eṣa me dāsyati dhanaṃ prabhūtaṃ śīghrameva ca ॥12-263-8॥
[सन्निकृष्टः (sannikṛṣṭaḥ) - closely-associated; च (ca) - and; देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; मानुषैः (mānuṣaiḥ) - by men; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; मे (me) - to me; दास्यति (dāsyati) - will give; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; प्रभूतम् (prabhūtam) - abundant; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Closely-associated and of the god, not and by others by men surrounded; this to me will give wealth abundant quickly indeed and.)
He is closely associated with the god and is not surrounded by other men; this one will give me abundant wealth very quickly.
ततो धूपैश्च गन्धैश्च माल्यैरुच्चावचैरपि। बलिभिर्विविधैश्चापि पूजयामास तं द्विजः ॥१२-२६३-९॥
tato dhūpaiś ca gandhaiś ca mālyair uccāvacair api| balibhir vividhaiś cāpi pūjayāmāsa taṃ dvijaḥ ॥12-263-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; धूपैः (dhūpaiḥ) - with incenses; च (ca) - and; गन्धैः (gandhaiḥ) - with fragrances; च (ca) - and; माल्यैः (mālyaiḥ) - with garlands; उच्चावचैः (uccāvacaiḥ) - of various kinds; अपि (api) - also; बलिभिः (balibhiḥ) - with offerings; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - of various sorts; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - worshipped; तम् (tam) - him; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born (Brahmin);]
(Then, with incenses and with fragrances and with garlands of various kinds also, with offerings of various sorts also, the twice-born worshipped him.)
Then the Brahmin worshipped him with various incenses, fragrances, garlands, and diverse offerings.
ततः स्वल्पेन कालेन तुष्टो जलधरस्तदा। तस्योपकारे नियतामिमां वाचमुवाच ह ॥१२-२६३-१०॥
tataḥ svalpena kālena tuṣṭo jaladharastadā। tasyopakāre niyatāmimāṃ vācamuvāca ha ॥12-263-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्वल्पेन (svalpena) - by little; कालेन (kālena) - by time; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - pleased; जलधरः (jaladharaḥ) - the cloud; तदा (tadā) - then; तस्य (tasya) - his; उपकारे (upakāre) - in help; नियताम् (niyatām) - fixed; इमाम् (imām) - this; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then, in a little time, the cloud, pleased, then, in his help, fixed, this speech spoke indeed.)
Then, after a short time, the cloud, being pleased by his help, spoke these fixed words.
ब्रह्मघ्ने च सुरापे च चोरे भग्नव्रते तथा। निष्कृतिर्विहिता सद्भिः कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः ॥१२-२६३-११॥
brahma-ghne ca surāpe ca core bhagna-vrate tathā। niṣkṛtir vihitā sadbhiḥ kṛtaghne nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ ॥12-263-11॥
[ब्रह्मघ्ने (brahma-ghne) - to the slayer of a Brāhmaṇa; च (ca) - and; सुरापे (surāpe) - to the drinker of liquor; च (ca) - and; चोरे (core) - to the thief; भग्नव्रते (bhagna-vrate) - to the breaker of a vow; तथा (tathā) - likewise; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - atonement; विहिता (vihitā) - is prescribed; सद्भिः (sadbhiḥ) - by the virtuous; कृतघ्ने (kṛtaghne) - to the ungrateful one; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - atonement;]
(To the slayer of a Brāhmaṇa, and to the drinker of liquor, and to the thief, to the breaker of a vow likewise, atonement is prescribed by the virtuous; to the ungrateful one, there is no atonement.)
Atonement is prescribed by the virtuous for the slayer of a Brāhmaṇa, the drinker of liquor, the thief, and the breaker of a vow; but for the ungrateful one, there is no atonement.
आशायास्तनयोऽधर्मः क्रोधोऽसूयासुतः स्मृतः। पुत्रो लोभो निकृत्यास्तु कृतघ्नो नार्हति प्रजाम् ॥१२-२६३-१२॥
āśāyās tanayo'dharmaḥ krodho'sūyāsutaḥ smṛtaḥ। putro lobho nikṛtyāstu kṛtaghno nārhati prajām ॥12-263-12॥
[आशायाः (āśāyāḥ) - of hope; तनयः (tanayaḥ) - son; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; असूया (asūyā) - envy; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is considered; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; लोभः (lobhaḥ) - greed; निकृत्या (nikṛtyā) - by deceit; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; कृतघ्नः (kṛtaghnaḥ) - ungrateful; न (na) - not; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; प्रजाम् (prajām) - offspring;]
(Of hope, the son is unrighteousness; anger is considered the son of envy. Greed is the son of deceit; the ungrateful does not deserve offspring.)
Unrighteousness is born of hope; anger is said to be the son of envy. Greed is the offspring of deceit; the ungrateful person does not deserve to have children.
ततः स ब्राह्मणः स्वप्ने कुण्डधारस्य तेजसा। अपश्यत्सर्वभूतानि कुशेषु शयितस्तदा ॥१२-२६३-१३॥
tataḥ sa brāhmaṇaḥ svapne kuṇḍadhārasya tejasā। apaśyat sarvabhūtāni kuśeṣu śayitas tadā ॥12-263-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; स्वप्ने (svapne) - in dream; कुण्डधारस्य (kuṇḍadhārasya) - of Kuṇḍadhāra; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the brilliance; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; कुशेषु (kuśeṣu) - on the kuśa grass; शयितः (śayitaḥ) - lying; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then he, the brāhmaṇa, in a dream, by the brilliance of Kuṇḍadhāra, saw all beings lying on the kuśa grass at that time.)
Then, in his dream, the brāhmaṇa saw, by the brilliance of Kuṇḍadhāra, all beings lying on the kuśa grass.
शमेन तपसा चैव भक्त्या च निरुपस्कृतः। शुद्धात्मा ब्राह्मणो रात्रौ निदर्शनमपश्यत ॥१२-२६३-१४॥
śamena tapasā caiva bhaktyā ca nirupaskṛtaḥ। śuddhātmā brāhmaṇo rātrau nidarśanam apaśyat ॥12-263-14॥
[शमेन (śamena) - by tranquility; by self-restraint; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; by penance; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - by devotion; च (ca) - and; निरुपस्कृतः (nirupaskṛtaḥ) - unadorned; without external observances; शुद्धात्मा (śuddhātmā) - pure-souled; of pure self; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; निदर्शनम् (nidarśanam) - a vision; an appearance; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; perceived;]
(By tranquility, by austerity, and indeed by devotion, unadorned, pure-souled, the Brāhmaṇa saw a vision at night.)
The Brāhmaṇa, who was pure in soul, unadorned, and endowed with tranquility, austerity, and devotion, saw a vision at night.
मणिभद्रं स तत्रस्थं देवतानां महाद्युतिम्। अपश्यत महात्मानं व्यादिशन्तं युधिष्ठिर ॥१२-२६३-१५॥
maṇibhadraṃ sa tatrasthaṃ devatānāṃ mahādyutim। apaśyata mahātmānaṃ vyādiśantaṃ yudhiṣṭhira ॥12-263-15॥
[मणिभद्रं (maṇibhadram) - Maṇibhadra; (a divine being;) स (sa) - he; तत्रस्थं (tatrastham) - situated there; देवतानां (devatānām) - of the deities; महाद्युतिम् (mahādyutim) - of great splendor; अपश्यत (apaśyata) - saw; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - the great-souled one; व्यादिशन्तं (vyādiśantam) - directing; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(He saw Maṇibhadra, situated there, of the deities, of great splendor, the great-souled one, directing, Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Yudhiṣṭhira saw Maṇibhadra, the great-souled and resplendent being among the deities, present there and giving directions.
तत्र देवाः प्रयच्छन्ति राज्यानि च धनानि च। शुभैः कर्मभिरारब्धाः प्रच्छिदन्त्यशुभेषु च ॥१२-२६३-१६॥
tatra devāḥ prayacchanti rājyāni ca dhanāni ca। śubhaiḥ karmabhir ārabdhāḥ pracchidanty aśubheṣu ca ॥12-263-16॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - bestow; राज्यानि (rājyāni) - kingdoms; च (ca) - and; धनानि (dhanāni) - wealths; च (ca) - and; शुभैः (śubhaiḥ) - by auspicious; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; आरब्धाः (ārabdhāḥ) - begun; प्रच्छिदन्ति (pracchidanti) - cut off; अशुभेषु (aśubheṣu) - in inauspicious; च (ca) - and;]
(There the gods bestow kingdoms and wealths. Those begun by auspicious actions are cut off among inauspicious (ones) and also.)
There, the gods grant kingdoms and wealth. Those attained by auspicious actions are destroyed among inauspicious ones as well.
पश्यतामथ यक्षाणां कुण्डधारो महाद्युतिः। निष्पत्य पतितो भूमौ देवानां भरतर्षभ ॥१२-२६३-१७॥
paśyatām atha yakṣāṇāṃ kuṇḍadhāro mahādyutiḥ। niṣpatya patito bhūmau devānāṃ bharatarṣabha ॥12-263-17॥
[पश्यताम् (paśyatām) - of those seeing; अथ (atha) - then; यक्षाणाम् (yakṣāṇām) - of the Yakṣas; कुण्डधारः (kuṇḍadhāraḥ) - Kuṇḍadhāra (name); महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - greatly radiant; निष्पत्य (niṣpatya) - having come out; पतितः (patitaḥ) - fallen; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull of the Bharatas;]
(Then, as the Yakṣas were watching, Kuṇḍadhāra, greatly radiant, having come out, fell on the ground, O bull of the Bharatas, of the gods.)
Then, O Bharata, as the Yakṣas looked on, the greatly radiant Kuṇḍadhāra, belonging to the gods, came out and fell to the ground.
ततस्तु देववचनान्मणिभद्रो महायशाः। उवाच पतितं भूमौ कुण्डधार किमिष्यते ॥१२-२६३-१८॥
tatastu devavacanānmaṇibhadro mahāyaśāḥ। uvāca patitaṃ bhūmau kuṇḍadhāra kimiṣyate ॥12-263-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; देववचनात् (devavacanāt) - from the words of the gods; मणिभद्रः (maṇibhadraḥ) - Maṇibhadra; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - greatly renowned; उवाच (uvāca) - said; पतितम् (patitam) - fallen; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; कुण्डधार (kuṇḍadhāra) - Kuṇḍadhāra; किम् (kim) - what; इष्यते (iṣyate) - is desired;]
(Then but from the words of the gods, Maṇibhadra, greatly renowned, said: "Fallen on the ground, Kuṇḍadhāra, what is desired?")
Then, Maṇibhadra, greatly renowned, having heard the words of the gods, said: "Kuṇḍadhāra, what do you desire, having fallen on the ground?"
कुण्डधार उवाच॥

Kuṇḍadhāra said.
यदि प्रसन्ना देवा मे भक्तोऽयं ब्राह्मणो मम। अस्यानुग्रहमिच्छामि कृतं किञ्चित्सुखोदयम् ॥१२-२६३-१९॥
yadi prasannā devā me bhakto'yaṃ brāhmaṇo mama। asyānugraham icchāmi kṛtaṃ kiñcit sukhodayam ॥12-263-19॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; प्रसन्ना (prasannā) - pleased; देवा (devā) - gods; मे (me) - my; भक्तः (bhaktaḥ) - devoted; अयम् (ayam) - this; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; मम (mama) - of me; अस्य (asya) - to him; अनुग्रहम् (anugraham) - favor; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - some; सुखोदयम् (sukhodayam) - arising of happiness;]
(If the gods are pleased, this brāhmaṇa is my devoted one. I desire to grant him a favor, some arising of happiness having been done.)
If the gods are pleased with me, this brāhmaṇa is my devotee. I wish to grant him a favor, to bring about some happiness for him.

ततस्तं मणिभद्रस्तु पुनर्वचनमब्रवीत्। देवानामेव वचनात्कुण्डधारं महाद्युतिम् ॥१२-२६३-२०॥
tatastaṃ maṇibhradrastu punarvacanamabravīt। devānāmeva vacanātkuṇḍadhāraṃ mahādyutim ॥12-263-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम् (tam) - him; मणिभद्रः (maṇibhadraḥ) - Maṇibhadra; तु (tu) - but; पुनः (punar) - again; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; एव (eva) - indeed; वचनात् (vacanāt) - by the word; कुण्डधारम् (kuṇḍadhāram) - Kuṇḍadhāra; महाद्युतिम् (mahādyutim) - of great splendor;]
(Then Maṇibhadra again said to him: By the word of the gods indeed, Kuṇḍadhāra of great splendor.)
Then Maṇibhadra again spoke to him: "By the command of the gods, Kuṇḍadhāra, the one of great splendor."

(Arise, arise, auspiciousness to you, accomplished in your task, be happy. As long as this brāhmaṇa, your friend, requests wealth, by the command of the gods, so long I give this innumerable (wealth).)

विचार्य कुण्डधारस्तु मानुष्यं चलमध्रुवम्। तपसे मतिमाधत्त ब्राह्मणस्य यशस्विनः ॥१२-२६३-२२॥
vicārya kuṇḍadhārastu mānuṣyaṃ calamadhruvam। tapase matimādhatta brāhmaṇasya yaśasvinaḥ ॥12-263-22॥
[विचार्य (vicārya) - having considered; कुण्डधारः (kuṇḍadhāraḥ) - Kuṇḍadhāra (name); तु (tu) - but; मानुष्यं (mānuṣyam) - human existence; चलम् (calam) - unstable; अध्रुवम् (adhruvam) - impermanent; तपसे (tapase) - for austerity; मतिम् (matim) - mind; आधत्त (ādhatta) - applied; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brāhmaṇa; यशस्विनः (yaśasvinaḥ) - illustrious;]
(Having considered, Kuṇḍadhāra but human existence (is) unstable, impermanent. For austerity, (he) applied (his) mind of the illustrious Brāhmaṇa.)
After reflecting, Kuṇḍadhāra realized that human life is unstable and impermanent. Therefore, the illustrious Brāhmaṇa set his mind on austerity.

पृथिवीं रत्नपूर्णां वा महद्वा धनसञ्चयम्। भक्ताय नाहमिच्छामि भवेदेष तु धार्मिकः ॥१२-२६३-२४॥

(May his intellect delight in dharma, and may he indeed subsist on dharma. May he be one for whom dharma is foremost. This is my favor regarded.)
May his mind find joy in dharma, and may he live by dharma. Let him be one for whom dharma is paramount. This is the favor I consider as mine.

(When the fruit of dharma is the kingdom and various pleasures, let this person indeed enjoy the fruits, devoid of bodily suffering.)

(Then that very Kuṇḍadhāra, greatly renowned, many times performed practice in dharma; then the deities became pleased with him.)
Then the greatly renowned Kuṇḍadhāra repeatedly practiced dharma, and as a result, the deities became pleased with him.

(Pleased your deities all of the twice-born of this likewise and will become this one righteous-souled in dharma and will place mind.)
All your deities are pleased, and likewise those of this twice-born. He will become righteous-souled, and his mind will be set in dharma.

tataḥ prīto jaladharaḥ kṛtakāryo yudhiṣṭhira। īpsitaṃ manaso labdhvā varamanyaiḥ sudurlabham ॥12-263-29॥

nirvedāddevatānāṃ ca prasādāts sa dvijottamaḥ। vanaṃ praviśya sumahattapa ārabdhavāṃstadā ॥12-263-32॥

(From detachment, and by the grace of the deities, he, the best of the twice-born, having entered the forest, then undertook very great austerity.)

देवतातिथिशेषेण फलमूलाशनो द्विजः। धर्मे चापि महाराज रतिरस्याभ्यजायत ॥१२-२६३-३३॥
devatātithiśeṣeṇa phalamūlāśano dvijaḥ। dharme cāpi mahārāja ratirasyābhyajāyata ॥12-263-33॥

(The twice-born, eating fruits and roots with what remained after offering to deities and guests, O great king, his delight in dharma also arose.)
O great king, the twice-born, subsisting on fruits and roots left after offerings to deities and guests, developed a delight in dharma.
त्यक्त्वा मूलफलं सर्वं पर्णाहारोऽभवद्द्विजः। पर्णं त्यक्त्वा जलाहारस्तदासीद्द्विजसत्तमः ॥१२-२६३-३४॥
tyaktvā mūlaphalaṃ sarvaṃ parṇāhāro'bhavaddvijaḥ। parṇaṃ tyaktvā jalāhārastadāsīddvijasattamaḥ ॥12-263-34॥
[त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; मूलफलं (mūlaphalam) - root and fruit; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; पर्णाहारः (parṇāhāraḥ) - leaf-eater; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born (Brahmin); पर्णं (parṇam) - leaf; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; जलाहारः (jalāhāraḥ) - water-eater; तदा (tadā) - then; असीत् (āsīt) - became; द्विजसत्तमः (dvijasattamaḥ) - the best among the twice-born;]
(Having abandoned all root and fruit, the twice-born became a leaf-eater. Having abandoned leaf, then the best among the twice-born became a water-eater.)
Having given up all roots and fruits, the Brahmin subsisted on leaves. Then, giving up leaves, the best among the Brahmins lived only on water.
वायुभक्षस्ततः पश्चाद्बहून्वर्षगणानभूत्। न चास्य क्षीयते प्राणस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥१२-२६३-३५॥
vāyubhakṣas tataḥ paścād bahūn varṣagaṇān abhūt। na ca asya kṣīyate prāṇas tad adbhutam iva abhavat ॥12-263-35॥
[वायुभक्षः (vāyubhakṣaḥ) - air-eater; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; बहून् (bahūn) - many; वर्षगणान् (varṣagaṇān) - years (groups of); अभूत् (abhūt) - he was; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; क्षीयते (kṣīyate) - is diminished; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ) - life-breath; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Air-eater then afterwards many years he was; not and his is diminished life-breath; that wonderful as if became.)
He lived for many years subsisting on air; his life-breath was not diminished, and that seemed truly wonderful.
धर्मे च श्रद्दधानस्य तपस्युग्रे च वर्ततः। कालेन महता तस्य दिव्या दृष्टिरजायत ॥१२-२६३-३६॥
dharme ca śraddadhānasya tapasyugre ca vartataḥ। kālena mahatā tasya divyā dṛṣṭirajāyata ॥12-263-36॥
[धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; च (ca) - and; श्रद्दधानस्य (śraddadhānasya) - of the faithful; तपस्युग्रे (tapasyugre) - in severe austerity; च (ca) - and; वर्ततः (vartataḥ) - abiding; कालेन (kālena) - by time; महता (mahatā) - great; तस्य (tasya) - of him; दिव्या (divyā) - divine; दृष्टिः (dṛṣṭiḥ) - vision; अजायत (ajāyata) - arose;]
(In dharma and in severe austerity, of the faithful, abiding, by great time, of him, divine vision arose.)
As he abided faithfully in dharma and severe austerity, over time, a divine vision arose in him.
तस्य बुद्धिः प्रादुरासीद्यदि दद्यां महद्धनम्। तुष्टः कस्मैचिदेवाहं न मिथ्या वाग्भवेन्मम ॥१२-२६३-३७॥

(Of him, a thought arose: "If I should give great wealth, being pleased, indeed to someone, my speech should not be false.")

ततः प्रहृष्टवदनो भूय आरब्धवांस्तपः। भूयश्चाचिन्तयत्सिद्धो यत्परं सोऽभ्यपद्यत ॥१२-२६३-३८॥

(If I would give the kingdom, being indeed pleased with anyone, he would soon become king; my speech would not be false.)
If I were to grant the kingdom to anyone with whom I am truly pleased, he would quickly become king; my word would not be false.
तस्य साक्षात्कुण्डधारो दर्शयामास भारत। ब्राह्मणस्य तपोयोगात्सौहृदेनाभिचोदितः ॥१२-२६३-४०॥

Then Kuṇḍadhāra said, "I grant you the supreme divine vision. O brāhmaṇa, see the path of the kings and behold the worlds with your eye."
ततो राज्ञां सहस्राणि मग्नानि निरये तदा। दूरादपश्यद्विप्रः स दिव्ययुक्तेन चक्षुषा ॥१२-२६३-४३॥

मां पूजयित्वा भावेन यदि त्वं दुःखमाप्नुयाः। कृतं मया भवेत्किं ते कश्च तेऽनुग्रहो भवेत् ॥१२-२६३-४४॥
māṃ pūjayitvā bhāvena yadi tvaṃ duḥkham āpnuyāḥ। kṛtaṃ mayā bhavet kiṃ te kaś ca te'nugraho bhavet ॥12-263-44॥

(Having worshipped me with devotion, if you should obtain suffering, what done by me would be for you? And who would be your favor?)
If, after worshipping me with devotion, you still experience suffering, what benefit would my actions have for you? And what kind of favor would you receive from me?
पश्य पश्य च भूयस्त्वं कामानिच्छेत्कथं नरः। स्वर्गद्वारं हि संरुद्धं मानुषेषु विशेषतः ॥१२-२६३-४५॥
paśya paśya ca bhūyas tvaṃ kāmān icchet kathaṃ naraḥ। svargadvāraṃ hi saṃruddhaṃ mānuṣeṣu viśeṣataḥ ॥12-263-45॥

(See, see, and again you, how should a man desire desires? The gate of heaven is indeed closed, especially among men.)
Behold, behold again, how can a man desire pleasures? For the gate of heaven is indeed closed, especially among men.

ततोऽपश्यत्स कामं च क्रोधं लोभं भयं मदम्। निद्रां तन्द्रीं तथालस्यमावृत्य पुरुषान्स्थितान् ॥१२-२६३-४६॥
tato'paśyat sa kāmaṃ ca krodhaṃ lobhaṃ bhayaṃ madam| nidrāṃ tandrīṃ tathālasyaṃ āvṛtya puruṣān sthitān ॥12-263-46॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; सः (saḥ) - he; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; च (ca) - and; क्रोधम् (krodham) - anger; लोभम् (lobham) - greed; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; मदम् (madam) - pride; निद्राम् (nidrām) - sleep; तन्द्रीं (tandrīṃ) - sloth; तथा (tathā) - also; आलस्यम् (ālasyaṃ) - laziness; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having enveloped; पुरुषान् (puruṣān) - men; स्थितान् (sthitān) - standing;]
(Then he saw desire and anger, greed, fear, pride, sleep, sloth, and also laziness, having enveloped men standing.)
Then he saw that desire, anger, greed, fear, pride, sleep, sloth, and laziness had enveloped the men who stood there.
कुण्डधार उवाच॥

एतैर्लोकाः सुसंरुद्धा देवानां मानुषाद्भयम्। तथैव देववचनाद्विघ्नं कुर्वन्ति सर्वशः ॥१२-२६३-४७॥
etairlokāḥ susaṁruddhā devānāṁ mānuṣādbhayam। tathaiva devavacanādvighnaṁ kurvanti sarvaśaḥ ॥12-263-47॥
[एतैः (etaiḥ) - by these; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; सुसंरुद्धाः (susaṁruddhāḥ) - well-blocked; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; मानुषात् (mānuṣāt) - from humans; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; देववचनात् (devavacanāt) - from the word of the gods; विघ्नम् (vighnam) - obstacle; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - they make; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way;]
(By these, the worlds are well-blocked, fear (arises) for the gods from humans. In the same way, from the word of the gods, they make obstacles in every way.)
By these, the worlds are well-blocked and the gods fear humans. Likewise, as per the word of the gods, they create obstacles in every way. (12-263-47)
न देवैरननुज्ञातः कश्चिद्भवति धार्मिकः। एष शक्तोऽसि तपसा राज्यं दातुं धनानि च ॥१२-२६३-४८॥
na devair ananujñātaḥ kaścid bhavati dhārmikaḥ। eṣa śakto'si tapasā rājyaṃ dātuṃ dhanāni ca ॥12-263-48॥
[न (na) - not; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अननुज्ञातः (ananujñātaḥ) - not permitted; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; धार्मिकः (dhārmikaḥ) - righteous; एष (eṣa) - this; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; असि (asi) - you are; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; राज्यम् (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; धनानि (dhanāni) - wealths; च (ca) - and;]
(Not by the gods unpermitted anyone becomes righteous. This (one) is capable, you are, by austerity, to give kingdom and wealths.)
No one becomes righteous without the permission of the gods. You are capable, by your austerity, of granting both the kingdom and wealth.
भीष्म उवाच॥

ततः पपात शिरसा ब्राह्मणस्तोयधारिणे। उवाच चैनं धर्मात्मा महान्मेऽनुग्रहः कृतः ॥१२-२६३-४९॥
tataḥ papāta śirasā brāhmaṇas toyadhāriṇe। uvāca ca enaṃ dharmātmā mahān me'nugrahaḥ kṛtaḥ ॥12-263-49॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पपात (papāta) - fell; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (his) head; ब्राह्मणस् (brāhmaṇas) - the brāhmaṇa; तोयधारिणे (toyadhāriṇe) - to the bearer of water; उवाच (uvāca) - said; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - to him; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - the righteous one; महान् (mahān) - great; मे (me) - to me; अनुग्रहः (anugrahaḥ) - favor; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been done;]
(Then (he) fell with (his) head to the brāhmaṇa, the bearer of water. The righteous great one said to him: "A great favor has been done to me.")

कामलोभानुबन्धेन पुरा ते यदसूयितम्। मया स्नेहमविज्ञाय तत्र मे क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥१२-२६३-५०॥
kāmalobhānubandhena purā te yadasūyitam। mayā snehamavijñāya tatra me kṣantumarhasi ॥12-263-50॥
[काम (kāma) - desire; लोभ (lobha) - greed; अनुबन्धेन (anubandhena) - by the connection; पुरा (purā) - formerly; ते (te) - by you; यत् (yat) - which; असूयितम् (asūyitam) - was envied; मया (mayā) - by me; स्नेहम् (sneham) - affection; अविज्ञाय (avijñāya) - not knowing; तत्र (tatra) - in that; मे (me) - my; क्षन्तुम् (kṣantum) - to forgive; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; १२-२६३-५० (12-263-50) - 12-263-50;]
(By the connection of desire and greed, formerly, which was envied by you, not knowing affection by me, in that, you ought to forgive me.)
In the past, due to desire and greed, I envied you, not understanding your affection; in that matter, you ought to forgive me.
क्षान्तमेव मयेत्युक्त्वा कुण्डधारो द्विजर्षभम्। सम्परिष्वज्य बाहुभ्यां तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥१२-२६३-५१॥
kṣāntam eva mayety uktvā kuṇḍadhāro dvijarṣabham। sampariṣvajya bāhubhyāṃ tatraivāntaradhīyata ॥12-263-51॥
[क्षान्तम् (kṣāntam) - forgiven; (having been) forgiven; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; मया (mayā) - by me; इति (iti) - thus; so; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; कुण्डधारः (kuṇḍadhāraḥ) - Kuṇḍadhāra (name); द्विजर्षभम् (dvijarṣabham) - the best of Brāhmaṇas; सम्परिष्वज्य (sampariṣvajya) - having embraced; बाहुभ्याम् (bāhubhyām) - with (his) arms; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - just; indeed; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared; vanished;]
(Having said "It has indeed been forgiven by me," Kuṇḍadhāra, having embraced the best of Brāhmaṇas with his arms, disappeared right there.)
Kuṇḍadhāra said, "I have indeed forgiven you," and, embracing the best of Brāhmaṇas with his arms, vanished on the spot.
ततः सर्वानिमाँल्लोकान्ब्राह्मणोऽनुचचार ह। कुण्डधारप्रसादेन तपसा योजितः पुरा ॥१२-२६३-५२॥
tataḥ sarvānimāṃllokān brāhmaṇo'nucacāra ha। kuṇḍadhāraprasādena tapasā yojitaḥ purā ॥12-263-52॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; इमाँन् (imān) - these; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; अनुचचार (anucacāra) - wandered; ह (ha) - indeed; कुण्डधारप्रसादेन (kuṇḍadhāraprasādena) - by the grace of Kuṇḍadhāra; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; योजितः (yojitaḥ) - joined; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Then the Brāhmaṇa indeed wandered all these worlds, formerly joined by austerity and by the grace of Kuṇḍadhāra.)
Then, by the grace of Kuṇḍadhāra and through his austerity, the Brāhmaṇa once wandered through all these worlds.
विहायसा च गमनं तथा सङ्कल्पितार्थता। धर्माच्छक्त्या तथा योगाद्या चैव परमा गतिः ॥१२-२६३-५३॥
vihāyasā ca gamanaṃ tathā saṅkalpitārthatā। dharmācchaktyā tathā yogādyā caiva paramā gatiḥ ॥12-263-53॥
[विहायसा (vihāyasā) - by air; by the sky; च (ca) - and; गमनं (gamanaṃ) - movement; going; तथा (tathā) - likewise; in that way; सङ्कल्पितार्थता (saṅkalpitārthatā) - the state of having the object of intention; धर्माच्छक्त्या (dharmācchaktyā) - by the power of dharma; तथा (tathā) - likewise; योगाद्या (yogādyā) - by yoga and others; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; परमा (paramā) - supreme; गतिः (gatiḥ) - attainment; path;]
(By air and movement, likewise the state of having the object of intention; by the power of dharma, likewise by yoga and others, and indeed the supreme attainment.)
Travel by air, movement, and the realization of intended objects; through the power of dharma, as well as by yoga and similar means, one attains the highest goal.
देवता ब्राह्मणाः सन्तो यक्षा मानुषचारणाः। धार्मिकान्पूजयन्तीह न धनाढ्यान्न कामिनः ॥१२-२६३-५४॥
devatā brāhmaṇāḥ santo yakṣā mānuṣacāraṇāḥ। dhārmikānpūjayantīha na dhanāḍhyānna kāminaḥ ॥12-263-54॥
[देवता (devatā) - deities; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; सन्तः (santaḥ) - the virtuous; यक्षा (yakṣā) - Yakṣas; मानुषचारणाः (mānuṣacāraṇāḥ) - human sages; धार्मिकान् (dhārmikān) - the righteous; पूजयन्ति (pūjayanti) - honor; इह (iha) - here; न (na) - not; धनाढ्यान् (dhanāḍhyān) - the wealthy; न (na) - not; कामिनः (kāminaḥ) - the desirous;]
(Deities, Brāhmaṇas, the virtuous, Yakṣas, and human sages honor here the righteous, not the wealthy, not the desirous.)

सुप्रसन्ना हि ते देवा यत्ते धर्मे रता मतिः। धने सुखकला काचिद्धर्मे तु परमं सुखम् ॥१२-२६३-५५॥
suprasannā hi te devā yatte dharme ratā matiḥ। dhane sukhakalā kācid dharme tu paramaṃ sukham ॥12-263-55॥
[सुप्रसन्ना (suprasannā) - very pleased; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; देवा (devā) - gods; यत् (yat) - because; ते (te) - your; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; रता (ratā) - engaged; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind; धने (dhane) - in wealth; सुखकला (sukhakalā) - the art of happiness; काचित् (kācit) - some; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; तु (tu) - but; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness;]
(Very pleased indeed are your gods because your mind is engaged in dharma. In wealth there is some art of happiness, but in dharma is supreme happiness.)
Your gods are truly pleased because your mind is devoted to dharma. There is some happiness in wealth, but the highest happiness is found in dharma.
