मनोरथरथं प्राप्य इन्द्रियार्थहयं नरः। रश्मिभिर्ज्ञानसम्भूतैर्यो गच्छति स बुद्धिमान् ॥१२-२८०-१॥
manoratharathaṃ prāpya indriyārthahayaṃ naraḥ। raśmibhirjñānasambhūtairyō gacchati sa buddhimān ॥12-280-1॥
[मनोरथ (manoratha) - desire; intention; रथं (rathaṃ) - chariot; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; इन्द्रियार्थ (indriyārtha) - sense-objects; हयं (hayaṃ) - horse; नरः (naraḥ) - man; रश्मिभिः (raśmibhiḥ) - by reins; ज्ञानसम्भूतैः (jñānasambhūtaiḥ) - arisen from knowledge; यः (yaḥ) - who; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; सः (saḥ) - he; बुद्धिमान् (buddhimān) - wise;]
(Having obtained the chariot of desire, the man who goes with the horses of sense-objects, by reins arisen from knowledge, he is wise.)
He who, having acquired the chariot of desire and harnessed the horses of the senses with reins made of knowledge, proceeds thus—he is truly wise.
सेवाश्रितेन मनसा वृत्तिहीनस्य शस्यते। द्विजातिहस्तान्निर्वृत्ता न तु तुल्यात्परस्परम् ॥१२-२८०-२॥
sevāśritena manasā vṛttihīnasya śasyate। dvijātihastānnirvṛttā na tu tulyātparasparam ॥12-280-2॥
[सेवाश्रितेन (sevāśritena) - by one who has resorted to service; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; वृत्तिहीनस्य (vṛttihīnasya) - of one devoid of means of livelihood; शस्यते (śasyate) - is praised; द्विजातिहस्तात् (dvijātihastāt) - from the hand of a twice-born; निर्वृत्ता (nirvṛttā) - obtained; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; तुल्यात् (tulyāt) - from an equal; परस्परम् (parasparam) - mutually;]
(By one who has resorted to service, with mind, the food obtained from the hand of a twice-born, of one devoid of means of livelihood, is praised; but not mutually from an equal.)
Food obtained from the hand of a twice-born, by one who has resorted to service and is devoid of means of livelihood, is praised; but not when mutually taken from an equal.
आयुर्नसुलभं लब्ध्वा नावकर्षेद्विशां पते। उत्कर्षार्थं प्रयतते नरः पुण्येन कर्मणा ॥१२-२८०-३॥
āyur-nasulabhaṃ labdhvā nāvakārṣed-viśāṃ pate| utkarṣārthaṃ prayatate naraḥ puṇyena karmaṇā ॥12-280-3॥
[आयुः (āyuḥ) - life; न (na) - not; सुलभम् (sulabham) - easily obtained; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; न (na) - not; अवकर्षेत् (avakarṣet) - should degrade; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; उत्कर्षार्थम् (utkarṣārtham) - for the sake of elevation; प्रयतते (prayatate) - strives; नरः (naraḥ) - man; पुण्येन (puṇyena) - by merit; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action;]
(Having obtained life, not easily obtained, one should not degrade, O lord of men; for the sake of elevation, a man strives by meritorious action.)
O lord of men, having attained this rare human life, one should not debase oneself; rather, a person should strive for elevation through virtuous deeds.
वर्णेभ्योऽपि परिभ्रष्टः स वै संमानमर्हति। न तु यः सत्क्रियां प्राप्य राजसं कर्म सेवते ॥१२-२८०-४॥
varṇebhyo'pi paribhraṣṭaḥ sa vai saṃmānam arhati। na tu yaḥ satkriyāṃ prāpya rājasaṃ karma sevate ॥12-280-4॥
[वर्णेभ्यः (varṇebhyaḥ) - from the castes; अपि (api) - even; परिभ्रष्टः (paribhraṣṭaḥ) - fallen away; सः (saḥ) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; संमानम् (saṃmānam) - honor; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; सत्क्रियां (satkriyām) - good conduct; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; राजसम् (rājasam) - passionate; कर्म (karma) - action; सेवते (sevate) - engages in;]
(Even one fallen away from the castes, he indeed deserves honor; but not he who, having obtained good conduct, engages in passionate action.)
Even if someone has fallen from their caste, he truly deserves honor; but not the one who, though having attained good conduct, engages in passionate or base actions.
वर्णोत्कर्षमवाप्नोति नरः पुण्येन कर्मणा। दुर्लभं तमलब्धा हि हन्यात्पापेन कर्मणा ॥१२-२८०-५॥
varṇotkarṣam avāpnoti naraḥ puṇyena karmaṇā। durlabhaṃ tam alabdhā hi hanyāt pāpena karmaṇā ॥12-280-5॥
[वर्णोत्कर्षम् (varṇotkarṣam) - excellence of caste; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; नरः (naraḥ) - man; पुण्येन (puṇyena) - by merit; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; दुर्लभम् (durlabham) - difficult to obtain; तम् (tam) - that; अलब्धा (alabdhā) - not having obtained; हि (hi) - indeed; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - destroys; पापेन (pāpena) - by sin; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action;]
(A man attains excellence of caste by meritorious action. Indeed, not having obtained that, he destroys it by sinful action.)
A man attains the excellence of his caste through virtuous deeds; but if he fails to achieve it, he destroys it by sinful actions.
अज्ञानाद्धि कृतं पापं तपसैवाभिनिर्णुदेत्। पापं हि कर्म फलति पापमेव स्वयं कृतम् ॥ तस्मात्पापं न सेवेत कर्म दुःखफलोदयम् ॥१२-२८०-६॥
ajñānāddhi kṛtaṃ pāpaṃ tapasaivābhinirṇudet। pāpaṃ hi karma phalati pāpameva svayaṃ kṛtam ॥ tasmātpāpaṃ na seveta karma duḥkaphalodayam ॥12-280-6॥
[अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - from ignorance; हि (hi) - indeed; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; पापं (pāpam) - sin; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; एव (eva) - only; अभिनिर्णुदेत् (abhinirṇudet) - should completely destroy; पापं (pāpam) - sin; हि (hi) - indeed; कर्म (karma) - action; फलति (phalati) - bears fruit; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; एव (eva) - only; स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; पापं (pāpam) - sin; न (na) - not; सेवेत (seveta) - should associate with; कर्म (karma) - action; दुःख (duḥkha) - suffering; फल (phala) - fruit; उदयम् (udayam) - arising;]
(Sin done out of ignorance should indeed be destroyed only by austerity. Indeed, sinful action bears fruit; only the sin done by oneself. Therefore, one should not associate with sinful action, which brings about the fruit of suffering.)
Sin committed out of ignorance should be destroyed by austerity alone. Sinful actions certainly bear fruit; only the sin committed by oneself. Therefore, one should not engage in sinful actions that result in suffering.
पापानुबन्धं यत्कर्म यद्यपि स्यान्महाफलम्। न तत्सेवेत मेधावी शुचिः कुसलिलं यथा ॥१२-२८०-७॥
pāpānubandhaṃ yat karma yadyapi syān mahāphalam। na tat seveta medhāvī śuciḥ kusalilaṃ yathā ॥12-280-7॥
[पाप (pāpa) - sin; अनुबन्धं (anubandhaṃ) - connected; यत् (yat) - which; कर्म (karma) - action; यद्यपि (yadyapi) - although; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; महाफलम् (mahāphalam) - great fruit; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; सेवेत (seveta) - should associate; मेधावी (medhāvī) - wise; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; कुसलिलं (kusalilaṃ) - bad water; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(An action which is connected with sin, even if it may yield great fruit, a wise and pure person should not associate with that, just as (one does) not (associate with) bad water.)
A wise and pure person should not engage in any action that is associated with sin, even if it yields great results, just as one should avoid bad water.
किङ्कष्टमनुपश्यामि फलं पापस्य कर्मणः। प्रत्यापन्नस्य हि सतो नात्मा तावद्विरोचते ॥१२-२८०-८॥
kiṅkaṣṭam anupaśyāmi phalaṃ pāpasya karmaṇaḥ। pratyāpannasya hi sataḥ na ātmā tāvat virocate ॥12-280-8॥
[किम् (kim) - what; कष्टम् (kaṣṭam) - painful; अनुपश्यामि (anupaśyāmi) - I observe; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of sin; कर्मणः (karmaṇaḥ) - of action; प्रत्यापन्नस्य (pratyāpannasya) - of one who has returned; हि (hi) - indeed; सतः (sataḥ) - of the being; न (na) - not; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; तावत् (tāvat) - so much; विरोचते (virocate) - shines;]
(What painful fruit of sinful action do I observe? For indeed, the self of one who has returned does not shine so much.)
What painful result of sinful action do I see? For truly, the self of one who has returned does not shine as before.
प्रत्यापत्तिश्च यस्येह बालिशस्य न जायते। तस्यापि सुमहांस्तापः प्रस्थितस्योपजायते ॥१२-२८०-९॥
pratyāpattiś ca yasya iha bāliśasya na jāyate। tasyāpi sumahāṁs tāpaḥ prasthitasya upajāyate ॥12-280-9॥
[प्रत्यापत्तिः (pratyāpattiḥ) - return; च (ca) - and; यस्य (yasya) - whose; इह (iha) - here; बालिशस्य (bāliśasya) - of the foolish; न (na) - not; जायते (jāyate) - arises; तस्य (tasya) - for him; अपि (api) - also; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; तापः (tāpaḥ) - pain; प्रस्थितस्य (prasthitasya) - of the one who has set out; उपजायते (upajāyate) - arises;]
(And return here does not arise for the foolish; for him also very great pain arises when he has set out.)
For the foolish person, there is no return here; for him, too, great suffering arises once he has set out.
विरक्तं शोध्यते वस्त्रं न तु कृष्णोपसंहितम्। प्रयत्नेन मनुष्येन्द्र पापमेवं निबोध मे ॥१२-२८०-१०॥
viraktaṃ śodhyate vastraṃ na tu kṛṣṇopasaṃhitam। prayatnena manuṣyendra pāpamevaṃ nibodha me ॥12-280-10॥
[विरक्तं (viraktaṃ) - discolored; शोध्यते (śodhyate) - is cleansed; वस्त्रं (vastraṃ) - cloth; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; कृष्णोपसंहितम् (kṛṣṇopasaṃhitam) - mixed with black (dye); प्रयत्नेन (prayatnena) - with effort; मनुष्येन्द्र (manuṣyendra) - O best of men; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; मे (me) - from me;]
(Discolored cloth is cleansed, but not that which is mixed with black. With effort, O best of men, understand sin thus from me.)
Discolored cloth can be cleansed, but not cloth mixed with black dye. In the same way, O best of men, understand from me that sin is like this.
स्वयं कृत्वा तु यः पापं शुभमेवानुतिष्ठति। प्रायश्चित्तं नरः कर्तुमुभयं सोऽश्नुते पृथक् ॥१२-२८०-११॥
svayaṃ kṛtvā tu yaḥ pāpaṃ śubham-evānutiṣṭhati। prāyaścittaṃ naraḥ kartum-ubhayam so'śnute pṛthak ॥12-280-11॥
[स्वयं (svayam) - oneself; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; पापं (pāpaṃ) - sin; शुभम् (śubham) - good deed; एव (eva) - only; अनुतिष्ठति (anutiṣṭhati) - performs; प्रायश्चित्तं (prāyaścittam) - atonement; नरः (naraḥ) - man; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; उभयं (ubhayam) - both; सः (saḥ) - he; अश्नुते (aśnute) - obtains; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately;]
(Oneself having done but who sin, only good deed performs. Atonement man to do both he obtains separately.)
But if a man, having committed a sin himself, performs only good deeds, he attains both the results of atonement and of action separately.
अज्ञानात्तु कृतां हिंसामहिंसा व्यपकर्षति। ब्राह्मणाः शास्त्रनिर्देशादित्याहुर्ब्रह्मवादिनः ॥१२-२८०-१२॥
ajñānāttu kṛtāṃ hiṃsāmahiṃsā vyapakarṣati। brāhmaṇāḥ śāstranirdeśādityāhurbrahmavādinaḥ ॥12-280-12॥
[अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - from ignorance; तु (tu) - but; कृताम् (kṛtām) - committed; हिंसाम् (hiṃsām) - injury; अहिंसा (ahiṃsā) - non-injury; व्यपकर्षति (vyapakarṣati) - removes; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - the Brāhmaṇas; शास्त्रनिर्देशात् (śāstranirdeśāt) - by the instruction of the śāstra; इति (iti) - thus; आहुः (āhuḥ) - say; ब्रह्मवादिनः (brahmavādinaḥ) - the speakers of Brahman;]
(But from ignorance, non-injury removes the injury committed; thus say the speakers of Brahman, the Brāhmaṇas, by the instruction of the śāstra.)
The speakers of Brahman, the Brāhmaṇas, say that non-injury, as instructed by the śāstra, removes the injury committed out of ignorance.
तथा कामकृतं चास्य विहिंसैवापकर्षति। इत्याहुर्धर्मशास्त्रज्ञा ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः ॥१२-२८०-१३॥
tathā kāmakṛtaṃ cāsya vihiṃsaivāpakarṣati। ityāhur dharmaśāstrajñā brāhmaṇā vedapāragāḥ ॥12-280-13॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; कामकृतम् (kāmakṛtam) - done by desire; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; विहिंसा (vihiṃsā) - injury; एव (eva) - indeed; अपकर्षति (apakarṣati) - draws away; इति (iti) - thus; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; धर्मशास्त्रज्ञाः (dharmaśāstrajñāḥ) - knowers of dharma-śāstra; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; वेदपारगाः (vedapāragāḥ) - those who have mastered the Vedas;]
(Thus, that which is done by desire, and injury indeed draws away (from merit) of him; thus say the knowers of dharma-śāstra, the Brāhmaṇas, those who have mastered the Vedas.)
Thus, the knowers of dharma-śāstra, the Brāhmaṇas who have mastered the Vedas, say that actions done out of desire and injury indeed deprive a person (of merit).
अहं तु तावत्पश्यामि कर्म यद्वर्तते कृतम्। गुणयुक्तं प्रकाशं च पापेनानुपसंहितम् ॥१२-२८०-१४॥
ahaṃ tu tāvatpaśyāmi karma yadvartate kṛtam। guṇayuktaṃ prakāśaṃ ca pāpenānupasaṃhitam ॥12-280-14॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; तु (tu) - but; तावत् (tāvat) - so far; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - see; कर्म (karma) - action; यत् (yat) - which; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; गुणयुक्तं (guṇayuktaṃ) - endowed with qualities; प्रकाशं (prakāśaṃ) - illumination; च (ca) - and; पापेन (pāpena) - by evil; अनुपसंहितम् (anupasaṃhitam) - not accompanied;]
(I but so far see action which exists done, endowed with qualities, illumination and by evil not accompanied.)
But as for me, I see only those actions which have been performed, endowed with qualities and illumination, and not accompanied by evil.
यथा सूक्ष्माणि कर्माणि फलन्तीह यथातथम्। बुद्धियुक्तानि तानीह कृतानि मनसा सह ॥१२-२८०-१५॥
yathā sūkṣmāṇi karmāṇi phalantīha yathātatham। buddhiyuktāni tānīha kṛtāni manasā saha ॥12-280-15॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; सूक्ष्माणि (sūkṣmāṇi) - subtle; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; फलन्ति (phalanti) - bear fruit; इह (iha) - here; यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - so; बुद्धियुक्तानि (buddhiyuktāni) - endowed with intelligence; तानि (tāni) - those; इह (iha) - here; कृतानि (kṛtāni) - performed; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; सह (saha) - together;]
(Just as subtle actions bear fruit here in whatever way, so too those actions performed here with the mind endowed with intelligence (bear fruit) together.)
Just as subtle actions yield results here in various ways, so also, those actions performed here with an intelligent mind bear fruit accordingly.
भवत्यल्पफलं कर्म सेवितं नित्यमुल्बणम्। अबुद्धिपूर्वं धर्मज्ञ कृतमुग्रेण कर्मणा ॥१२-२८०-१६॥
bhavaty-alpa-phalaṃ karma sevitaṃ nityam-ulbaṇam। abuddhi-pūrvaṃ dharma-jña kṛtam-ugreṇa karmaṇā ॥12-280-16॥
[भवति (bhavati) - becomes; अल्पफलं (alpa-phalaṃ) - of little fruit; कर्म (karma) - action; सेवितं (sevitaṃ) - practiced; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; उल्बणम् (ulbaṇam) - harsh; अबुद्धिपूर्वं (abuddhi-pūrvam) - done without wisdom; धर्मज्ञ (dharma-jña) - knower of dharma; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; उग्रेण (ugreṇa) - with severity; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action;]
(Action of little fruit, practiced always, harsh, done without wisdom, O knower of dharma, done with severe action.)
O knower of dharma, action that is always harsh, of little fruit, and practiced without wisdom, is performed with severity and yields little result.
कृतानि यानि कर्माणि दैवतैर्मुनिभिस्तथा। नाचरेत्तानि धर्मात्मा श्रुत्वा चापि न कुत्सयेत् ॥१२-२८०-१७॥
kṛtāni yāni karmāṇi daivatair munibhis tathā। nācarettāni dharmātmā śrutvā cāpi na kutsayet ॥12-280-17॥
[कृतानि (kṛtāni) - performed; done; यानि (yāni) - which; those which; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; deeds; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - by the gods; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - by sages; तथा (tathā) - also; likewise; न (na) - not; आचरेत् (ācaret) - should practice; should perform; तानि (tāni) - those; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous soul; virtuous person; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; also; न (na) - not; कुत्सयेत् (kutsayet) - should censure; should condemn;]
(The actions which have been performed by the gods and also by sages, a righteous soul should not practice those; having heard (of them), he should also not censure them.)
A virtuous person should neither perform those actions which have been done by gods and sages, nor, having heard of them, should he criticize them.
सञ्चिन्त्य मनसा राजन्विदित्वा शक्तिमात्मनः। करोति यः शुभं कर्म स वै भद्राणि पश्यति ॥१२-२८०-१८॥
sañcintya manasā rājan viditvā śaktim ātmanaḥ। karoti yaḥ śubhaṃ karma sa vai bhadrāṇi paśyati॥12-280-18॥
[सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; शक्तिम् (śaktim) - capacity; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; करोति (karoti) - does; यः (yaḥ) - who; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; कर्म (karma) - action; स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; भद्राणि (bhadrāṇi) - good things; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees;]
(Having considered with the mind, O king, having known one's own capacity, he who does auspicious action, he indeed sees good things.)
O king, one who, after thoughtful consideration and knowing his own capacity, performs auspicious deeds, truly attains good results.
नवे कपाले सलिलं संन्यस्तं हीयते यथा। नवेतरे तथाभावं प्राप्नोति सुखभावितम् ॥१२-२८०-१९॥
nave kapāle salilaṃ saṃnyastaṃ hīyate yathā। navetare tathābhāvaṃ prāpnoti sukhabhāvitam ॥12-280-19॥
[नवे (nave) - in a new; कपाले (kapāle) - pot; सलिलं (salilaṃ) - water; संन्यस्तं (saṃnyastaṃ) - placed; हीयते (hīyate) - diminishes; यथा (yathā) - just as; नवेतरे (navetare) - in another new; तथाभावं (tathābhāvaṃ) - in the same way; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; सुखभावितम् (sukhabhāvitam) - imbued with happiness;]
(Just as water placed in a new pot diminishes, in another new (pot) it attains the same state, imbued with happiness.)
Just as water placed in a new pot diminishes, so too, in another new pot, it attains the same condition, filled with happiness.
सतोयेऽन्यत्तु यत्तोयं तस्मिन्नेव प्रसिच्यते। वृद्धे वृद्धिमवाप्नोति सलिले सलिलं यथा ॥१२-२८०-२०॥
satoye'nyattu yattoyaṃ tasminneva prasicyate। vṛddhe vṛddhimavāpnoti salile salilaṃ yathā ॥12-280-20॥
[सतोये (satoye) - in a pond with water; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; तु (tu) - but; यत् (yat) - which; तोयम् (toyam) - water; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रसिच्यते (prasicyate) - is poured; वृद्धे (vṛddhe) - in what is increased; वृद्धिम् (vṛddhim) - increase; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - obtains; सलिले (salile) - in water; सलिलम् (salilam) - water; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(In a pond with water, but when other water is poured into that, it indeed obtains increase in what is increased, just as water in water.)
Just as when water is poured into a pond already filled with water, the water increases, so too does something increase when added to what is already abundant.
एवं कर्माणि यानीह बुद्धियुक्तानि भूपते। नसमानीह हीनानि तानि पुण्यतमान्यपि ॥१२-२८०-२१॥
evaṃ karmāṇi yāni iha buddhi-yuktāni bhūpate। na samāni iha hīnani tāni puṇyatamāni api॥12-280-21॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; यानि (yāni) - which; इह (iha) - here; बुद्धियुक्तानि (buddhiyuktāni) - endowed with intelligence; भूपते (bhūpate) - O king; न (na) - not; समानि (samāni) - equal; इह (iha) - here; हीनानि (hīnani) - inferior; तानि (tāni) - those; पुण्यतमानि (puṇyatamāni) - most meritorious; अपि (api) - even;]
(Thus, actions which here are endowed with intelligence, O king, are not here equal to inferior ones; those, even if most meritorious.)
O king, thus, actions performed here with intelligence are not equal to inferior ones; even if those inferior actions are most meritorious.
राज्ञा जेतव्याः सायुधाश्चोन्नताश्च; सम्यक्कर्तव्यं पालनं च प्रजानाम्। अग्निश्चेयो बहुभिश्चापि यज्ञै; रन्ते मध्ये वा वनमाश्रित्य स्थेयम् ॥१२-२८०-२२॥
rājñā jetavyāḥ sāyudhāś c'onnatāś ca; samyak kartavyaṃ pālanaṃ ca prajānām। agniś c'eyo bahubhiś cāpi yajñai; rante madhye vā vanam āśritya stheyam ॥12-280-22॥

(By the king, the armed and the proud are to be conquered; proper protection of the subjects is to be done. Fire is better than many sacrifices; they delight in the midst or having resorted to the forest, one should remain.)

दमान्वितः पुरुषो धर्मशीलो; भूतानि चात्मानमिवानुपश्येत्। गरीयसः पूजयेदात्मशक्त्या; सत्येन शीलेन सुखं नरेन्द्र ॥१२-२८०-२३॥

(A man endowed with self-restraint and righteous character should regard living beings as himself. He should honor those greater (elders, superiors) with his own ability; with truth and virtue, O king, (he attains) happiness.)
