dharmādharmavimuktaṃ yadvimuktaṃ sarvasaṃśrayāt। janmamṛtyuvimuktaṃ ca vimuktaṃ puṇyapāpayoḥ ॥12-298-1॥
[धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; अधर्म (adharma) - unrighteousness; विमुक्तं (vimuktam) - freed; यत् (yat) - which; विमुक्तं (vimuktam) - freed; सर्व (sarva) - all; संश्रयात् (saṃśrayāt) - from dependence; जन्म (janma) - birth; मृत्यु (mṛtyu) - death; विमुक्तं (vimuktam) - freed; च (ca) - and; विमुक्तं (vimuktam) - freed; पुण्य (puṇya) - merit; पापयोः (pāpayoḥ) - from both sin;]

(Which is auspicious, eternal, fearless, eternal, and imperishable, unchanging, pure, eternal, effortless—that you are worthy to speak.)
You are worthy to speak of that which is auspicious, eternal, fearless, imperishable, unchanging, pure, and effortless.

प्रभवं चाप्ययं चैव कालसङ्ख्यां तथैव च। वक्तुमर्हसि विप्रेन्द्र त्वदनुग्रहकाङ्क्षिणः ॥१२-२९८-६॥
prabhavaṃ cāpyayaṃ caiva kālasaṅkhyāṃ tathaiva ca। vaktumarhasi viprendra tvadanugrahakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ॥12-298-6॥

(Origin and dissolution and indeed the reckoning of time likewise and to speak you are worthy, O best of Brāhmaṇas, by you favor desiring.)
O best of Brāhmaṇas, you are worthy to speak of the origin, dissolution, and likewise the reckoning of time, for we are desiring your favor.
अज्ञानात्परिपृच्छामि त्वं हि ज्ञानमयो निधिः। तदहं श्रोतुमिच्छामि सर्वमेतदसंशयम् ॥१२-२९८-७॥
ajñānāt paripṛcchāmi tvaṃ hi jñānamayo nidhiḥ। tad ahaṃ śrotum icchāmi sarvam etad asaṃśayam ॥12-298-7॥

(From ignorance I thoroughly ask you, indeed you are a treasure consisting of knowledge. That I desire to hear all this without doubt.)
Because of my ignorance, I ask you thoroughly, for you are truly a treasure of knowledge. Therefore, I wish to hear all this from you without any doubt.

(Let it be heard, O protector of the earth, that which you ask— the supreme knowledge of the yogas, and especially of the Sāṅkhyas.)

न तवाविदितं किञ्चिन्मां तु जिज्ञासते भवान्। पृष्टेन चापि वक्तव्यमेष धर्मः सनातनः ॥१२-२९८-९॥
na tavāviditaṃ kiñcin māṃ tu jijñāsate bhavān। pṛṣṭena cāpi vaktavyam eṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥12-298-9॥

(Not to you is anything unknown, but you inquire of me; when asked, also, it should be spoken—this is the eternal law.)

अष्टौ प्रकृतयः प्रोक्ता विकाराश्चापि षोडश। अथ सप्त तु व्यक्तानि प्राहुरध्यात्मचिन्तकाः ॥१२-२९८-१०॥
aṣṭau prakṛtayaḥ proktā vikārāś cāpi ṣoḍaśa। atha sapta tu vyaktāni prāhur adhyātmacintakāḥ ॥12-298-10॥
[अष्टौ (aṣṭau) - eight; प्रकृतयः (prakṛtayaḥ) - natures; प्रोक्ता (proktā) - are said; विकाराः (vikārāḥ) - modifications; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; षोडश (ṣoḍaśa) - sixteen; अथ (atha) - now; सप्त (sapta) - seven; तु (tu) - but; व्यक्तानि (vyaktāni) - manifested; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they declare; अध्यात्मचिन्तकाः (adhyātmacintakāḥ) - those who contemplate on the self;]

(Unmanifest and the great principle indeed, likewise the ego-principle indeed and earth, air, space, waters, and light as the fifth.)

शब्दस्पर्शौ च रूपं च रसो गन्धस्तथैव च। वाक्च हस्तौ च पादौ च पायुर्मेढ्रं तथैव च ॥१२-२९८-१३॥
śabdasparśau ca rūpaṃ ca raso gandhas tathaiva ca। vāk ca hastau ca pādau ca pāyur meḍhraṃ tathaiva ca ॥12-298-13॥

(sound, touches and form and taste, smell likewise and; speech and two hands and two feet and anus, genitals likewise and.)

एते विशेषा राजेन्द्र महाभूतेषु पञ्चसु। बुद्धीन्द्रियाण्यथैतानि सविशेषाणि मैथिल ॥१२-२९८-१४॥

(These particularities, O king, are in the five great elements. The organs of intellect, then these, with particularities, O Maithila.)

मनः षोडशकं प्राहुरध्यात्मगतिचिन्तकाः। त्वं चैवान्ये च विद्वांसस्तत्त्वबुद्धिविशारदाः ॥१२-२९८-१५॥
manaḥ ṣoḍaśakaṃ prāhur adhyātmagaticintakāḥ। tvaṃ caiva anye ca vidvāṃsaḥ tattvabuddhiviśāradāḥ ॥12-298-15॥

(The mind is said to be sixteenfold by those who contemplate the movement of the self; you and other learned ones skilled in understanding the truth (have said so).)

(Sound, touch, form, taste, and likewise smell—these, they say, are the fifth creation, the material, according to the thinkers on elements.)
