अपूर्वं वा भवेत्पात्रमथ वापि चिरोषितम्। दूरादभ्यागतं वापि किं पात्रं स्यात्पितामह ॥१३-३७-१॥
apūrvaṃ vā bhavet pātram atha vāpi ciroṣitam। dūrād abhyāgataṃ vāpi kiṃ pātraṃ syāt pitāmaha ॥13-37-1॥
[अपूर्वं (apūrvaṃ) - not-before; unprecedented; वा (vā) - or; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; may become; पात्रम् (pātram) - worthy; fit; vessel; अथ (atha) - or; then; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; even; चिरोषितम् (ciroṣitam) - long-resided; long-stayed; दूरात् (dūrāt) - from afar; अभ्यागतम् (abhyāgatam) - arrived; come; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; even; किं (kiṃ) - what; which; पात्रम् (pātram) - worthy; fit; vessel; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; might be; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(Not-before or may be worthy or then also long-resided; from afar arrived or also what worthy may be O grandsire.)
O grandsire, what may be considered worthy: something unprecedented, or one who has long resided, or one who has come from afar—what is worthy, O grandsire? (13-37-1)
भीष्म उवाच॥

क्रिया भवति केषाञ्चिदुपांशुव्रतमुत्तमम्। यो यो याचेत यत्किञ्चित्सर्वं दद्याम इत्युत ॥१३-३७-२॥
kriyā bhavati keṣāñcid upāṃśuvratam uttamam। yo yo yāceta yat kiñcit sarvaṃ dadyām ity uta ॥13-37-2॥
[क्रिया (kriyā) - action; ritual; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; is; केषाञ्चित् (keṣāñcit) - of some; उपांशु-व्रतम् (upāṃśu-vratam) - silent vow; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - highest; best; यः यः (yaḥ yaḥ) - whoever; whoever; याचेत् (yācet) - may ask; requests; यत् किञ्चित् (yat kiñcit) - whatever; anything; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; दद्याम् (dadyām) - I would give; I should give; इति (iti) - thus; उत् (ut) - indeed;]
(Action becomes for some the highest silent vow; whoever may ask for anything, all I would give, thus indeed.)
For some, the act of the highest silent vow is this: "Whatever anyone may ask for, I would give everything," thus indeed. (13-37-2)
अपीडयन्भृत्यवर्गमित्येवमनुशुश्रुम। पीडयन्भृत्यवर्गं हि आत्मानमपकर्षति ॥१३-३७-३॥
apīḍayanbhṛtyavargamityevamanuśuśruma। pīḍayanbhṛtyavargaṃ hi ātmānamapakarṣati ॥13-37-3॥
[अपीडयन् (apīḍayan) - not-oppressing; भृत्यवर्गम् (bhṛtyavargam) - servant-group; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - so; अनुशुश्रुम (anuśuśruma) - we have heard; पीडयन् (pīḍayan) - oppressing; भृत्यवर्गम् (bhṛtyavargam) - servant-group; हि (hi) - indeed; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - oneself; अपकर्षति (apakarṣati) - draws down;]
(Not-oppressing servant-group thus so we have heard. Oppressing servant-group indeed oneself draws down.)
We have heard thus: 'Not oppressing the group of servants.' For one who oppresses the group of servants indeed brings himself down. (13-37-3)
अपूर्वं वापि यत्पात्रं यच्चापि स्याच्चिरोषितम्। दूरादभ्यागतं चापि तत्पात्रं च विदुर्बुधाः ॥१३-३७-४॥
apūrvaṃ vāpi yatpātraṃ yaccāpi syācciroṣitam। dūrādabhyāgataṃ cāpi tatpātraṃ ca vidurbudhāḥ ॥13-37-4॥
[अपूर्वं (apūrvaṃ) - not-before; unprecedented; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; यत् (yat) - which; पात्रं (pātraṃ) - worthy; fit; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; चिरोषितम् (ciroṣitam) - long-resided; दूरात् (dūrāt) - from afar; अभ्यागतं (abhyāgataṃ) - arrived; come; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तत् (tat) - that; पात्रं (pātraṃ) - worthy; fit; च (ca) - and; विदुः (viduḥ) - know; बुधाः (budhāḥ) - wise ones;]
(Not-before or also which worthy, which and also may be long-resided, from afar arrived and also that worthy and know wise ones.)
The wise know as worthy that which is unprecedented, or which has long resided, or which has come from afar; they consider all these as worthy. (13-37-4)

अपीडया च भृत्यानां धर्मस्याहिंसया तथा। पात्रं विद्याम तत्त्वेन यस्मै दत्तं न सन्तपेत् ॥१३-३७-५॥
apīḍayā ca bhṛtyānāṃ dharmasyāhiṃsayā tathā। pātraṃ vidyām tattvena yasmai dattaṃ na santapet ॥13-37-5॥
[अपीडया (apīḍayā) - by non-oppression; च (ca) - and; भृत्यानाम् (bhṛtyānām) - of servants; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; अहिंसया (ahiṃsayā) - by non-violence; तथा (tathā) - likewise; पात्रम् (pātram) - worthy person; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - truly; यस्मै (yasmai) - to whom; दत्तम् (dattam) - given; न (na) - not; सन्तपेत् (santapet) - should regret;]
(By non-oppression and by non-violence of servants, likewise, knowledge truly given to a worthy person, one should not regret.)
One should not regret knowledge truly given to a worthy person, just as one should not regret non-oppression and non-violence towards servants. (13-37-5)

ऋत्विक्पुरोहिताचार्याः शिष्याः सम्बन्धिबान्धवाः। सर्वे पूज्याश्च मान्याश्च श्रुतवृत्तोपसंहिताः ॥१३-३७-६॥
ṛtvikpurohitācāryāḥ śiṣyāḥ sambandhibāndhavāḥ। sarve pūjyāś ca mānyāś ca śrutavṛttopasaṃhitāḥ ॥13-37-6॥
[ऋत्विक् (ṛtvik) - sacrificial priest; पुरोहित (purohita) - family priest; आचार्याः (ācāryāḥ) - teachers; शिष्याः (śiṣyāḥ) - disciples; सम्बन्धि (sambandhi) - relatives; बान्धवाः (bāndhavāḥ) - kinsmen; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पूज्याः (pūjyāḥ) - worthy of worship; च (ca) - and; मान्याः (mānyāḥ) - worthy of honor; च (ca) - and; श्रुत (śruta) - heard; वृत्त (vṛtta) - conduct; उपसंहिताः (upasaṃhitāḥ) - associated with;]
(Sacrificial priests, family priests, teachers, disciples, relatives, kinsmen; all worthy of worship and worthy of honor and associated with heard conduct.)
Sacrificial priests, family priests, teachers, disciples, relatives, and kinsmen—all are to be respected and honored, and are united by their well-known conduct. (13-37-6)
अतोऽन्यथा वर्तमानाः सर्वे नार्हन्ति सत्क्रियाम्। तस्मान्नित्यं परीक्षेत पुरुषान्प्रणिधाय वै ॥१३-३७-७॥
ato'nyathā vartamānāḥ sarve nārhanti satkriyām। tasmānnityaṃ parīkṣeta puruṣānpraṇidhāya vai ॥13-37-7॥
[अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; from this; from here; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; in another way; वर्तमानाः (vartamānāḥ) - existing; being; present; सर्वे (sarve) - all; everyone; न (na) - not; no; अर्हन्ति (arhanti) - are worthy; deserve; सत्क्रियाम् (satkriyām) - good action; proper conduct; honour; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; for that reason; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; constantly; परीक्षेत (parīkṣeta) - should examine; should test; पुरुषान् (puruṣān) - men; persons; प्रणिधाय (praṇidhāya) - having observed; having considered; वै (vai) - indeed; truly;]
(Therefore, otherwise existing all not are worthy of good action. Therefore, always should examine men having observed indeed.)
Therefore, all those who exist otherwise are not worthy of proper conduct. Hence, one should always examine men carefully indeed. (13-37-7)
अक्रोधः सत्यवचनमहिंसा दम आर्जवम्। अद्रोहो नातिमानश्च ह्रीस्तितिक्षा तपः शमः ॥१३-३७-८॥
akrodhaḥ satyavacanamahiṃsā dama ārjavam। adroho nātimānaś ca hrīstitikṣā tapaḥ śamaḥ ॥13-37-8॥
[अक्रोधः (akrodhaḥ) - absence of anger; सत्यवचन (satyavacana) - truthful speech; महिंसा (mahiṃsā) - non-injury; दम (dama) - self-restraint; आर्जवम् (ārjavam) - straightforwardness; अद्रोहः (adrohaḥ) - absence of malice; न (na) - not; अतिमानः (atimānaḥ) - excessive pride; च (ca) - and; ह्रीः (hrīḥ) - modesty; तितिक्षा (titikṣā) - forbearance; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; शमः (śamaḥ) - tranquility;]
(Absence of anger; truthful speech; non-injury; self-restraint; straightforwardness; absence of malice; not excessive pride; and modesty; forbearance; austerity; tranquility.)
Absence of anger, truthful speech, non-injury, self-restraint, straightforwardness, absence of malice, lack of excessive pride, modesty, forbearance, austerity, and tranquility. (13-37-8)
यस्मिन्नेतानि दृश्यन्ते न चाकार्याणि भारत। भावतो विनिविष्टानि तत्पात्रं मानमर्हति ॥१३-३७-९॥
yasminn etāni dṛśyante na ca akāryāṇi bhārata। bhāvataḥ viniviṣṭāni tat pātraṃ mānam arhati ॥13-37-9॥
[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; एतानि (etāni) - these; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अकार्याणि (akāryāṇi) - improper acts; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; भावतः (bhāvataḥ) - by nature; विनिविष्टानि (viniviṣṭāni) - firmly established; तत् (tat) - that; पात्रम् (pātram) - worthy person; मानम् (mānam) - honor; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves;]
(In whom these are seen and not improper acts, O Bhārata; by nature firmly established, that worthy person deserves honor.)
O Bhārata, that person in whom these qualities are seen and not improper acts, and in whom they are firmly established by nature, deserves honor. (13-37-9)
तथा चिरोषितं चापि सम्प्रत्यागतमेव च। अपूर्वं चैव पूर्वं च तत्पात्रं मानमर्हति ॥१३-३७-१०॥
tathā ciroṣitaṃ cāpi sampratyāgatameva ca। apūrvaṃ caiva pūrvaṃ ca tatpātraṃ mānamarhati ॥13-37-10॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in this way; चिरोषितं (ciroṣitam) - long-resided; long-stayed; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; even; सम्प्रत्यागतं (sampratyāgatam) - just-now-arrived; recently-come; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; च (ca) - and; अपूर्वं (apūrvam) - unprecedented; never-before; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; पूर्वं (pūrvam) - former; previous; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; पात्रं (pātram) - worthy; deserving; मानम् (mānam) - honor; respect; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; is worthy of;]
(Thus, long-resided and also just-now-arrived indeed and unprecedented and indeed former and that worthy honor deserves.)
Thus, both one who has resided long and one who has just arrived, the unprecedented and the former, all such are worthy of honor. (13-37-10)
अप्रामाण्यं च वेदानां शास्त्राणां चातिलङ्घनम्। सर्वत्र चानवस्थानमेतन्नाशनमात्मनः ॥१३-३७-११॥
aprāmāṇyaṃ ca vedānāṃ śāstrāṇāṃ cātilaṅghanam। sarvatra cānavasthānam etan nāśanam ātmanaḥ ॥13-37-11॥
[अप्रामाण्यं (aprāmāṇyam) - non-authoritativeness; च (ca) - and; वेदानां (vedānām) - of the Vedas; शास्त्राणां (śāstrāṇām) - of the śāstras; च (ca) - and; अतिलङ्घनम् (atilaṅghanam) - excessive transgression; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; च (ca) - and; अनवस्थानम् (anavasthānam) - instability; एतत् (etat) - this; नाशनम् (nāśanam) - destruction; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself;]
(Non-authoritativeness and of the Vedas, of the śāstras and excessive transgression; everywhere and instability, this is destruction of oneself.)

भवेत्पण्डितमानी यो ब्राह्मणो वेदनिन्दकः। आन्वीक्षिकीं तर्कविद्यामनुरक्तो निरर्थिकाम् ॥१३-३७-१२॥
bhavet-paṇḍita-mānī yo brāhmaṇo veda-nindakāḥ। ānvīkṣikīṃ tarka-vidyām-anurakto nirarthikām ॥13-37-12॥
[भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; पण्डितमानी (paṇḍita-mānī) - one who thinks himself a scholar; यः (yaḥ) - who; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; वेदनिन्दकः (veda-nindakaḥ) - criticizer of the Veda; आन्वीक्षिकीम् (ānvīkṣikīm) - the science of inquiry; तर्कविद्याम् (tarka-vidyām) - the science of logic; अनुरक्तः (anuraktaḥ) - attached; निरर्थिकाम् (nirarthikām) - useless;]
(May be one who thinks himself a scholar, who is a brāhmaṇa, criticizer of the Veda, attached to the science of inquiry and the science of logic, useless.)
A brāhmaṇa who considers himself a scholar, criticizes the Veda, and is attached to the sciences of inquiry and logic, is useless. (13-37-12)
हेतुवादान्ब्रुवन्सत्सु विजेताहेतुवादिकः। आक्रोष्टा चातिवक्ता च ब्राह्मणानां सदैव हि ॥१३-३७-१३॥
hetuvādān bruvan satsu vijetā hetuvādikaḥ। ākroṣṭā ca ativaktā ca brāhmaṇānāṃ sadaiva hi ॥13-37-13॥
[हेतुवादान् (hetuvādān) - those who argue logically; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; सत्सु (satsu) - among the good; विजेता (vijetā) - conqueror; हेतुवादिकः (hetuvādikaḥ) - one skilled in reasoning; आक्रोष्टा (ākroṣṭā) - reviler; च (ca) - and; अतिवक्ता (ativaktā) - one who speaks excessively; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the brāhmaṇas; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; हि (hi) - indeed;]
(Those who argue logically, speaking among the good, the conqueror is one skilled in reasoning; reviler and one who speaks excessively and of the brāhmaṇas always indeed.)
He who speaks among the good, conquering those who argue logically, is skilled in reasoning; he is always, indeed, a reviler and one who speaks excessively among the brāhmaṇas. (13-37-13)
सर्वाभिशङ्की मूढश्च बालः कटुकवागपि। बोद्धव्यस्तादृशस्तात नरश्वानं हि तं विदुः ॥१३-३७-१४॥
sarvābhiśaṅkī mūḍhaś ca bālaḥ kaṭukavāg api। boddhavyas tādṛśas tāta naraśvānaṃ hi taṃ viduḥ ॥13-37-14॥
[सर्वाभिशङ्की (sarvābhiśaṅkī) - one who suspects all; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - deluded; च (ca) - and; बालः (bālaḥ) - childish; कटुकवाक् (kaṭukavāk) - harsh in speech; अपि (api) - also; बोद्धव्यः (boddhavyaḥ) - to be understood; तादृशः (tādṛśaḥ) - such; तात (tāta) - dear one; नरश्वानम् (naraśvānam) - as a man-dog; हि (hi) - indeed; तं (taṃ) - him; विदुः (viduḥ) - they know;]
(One who suspects all, is deluded, and childish, also harsh in speech, such a one, dear one, is to be understood as a man-dog; indeed, him they know.)
Dear one, know that a person who suspects everyone, is deluded, childish, and harsh in speech, is to be regarded as a man-dog; indeed, such a person is recognized as such. (13-37-14)
यथा श्वा भषितुं चैव हन्तुं चैवावसृज्यते। एवं सम्भाषणार्थाय सर्वशास्त्रवधाय च ॥ अल्पश्रुताः कुतर्काश्च दृष्टाः स्पृष्टाः कुपण्डिताः ॥१३-३७-१५॥
yathā śvā bhaṣituṃ caiva hantuṃ caivāvasṛjyate। evaṃ sambhāṣaṇārthāya sarvaśāstravadhāya ca ॥ alpaśrutāḥ kutarkāś ca dṛṣṭāḥ spṛṣṭāḥ kupaṇḍitāḥ ॥13-37-15॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; श्वा (śvā) - dog; भषितुं (bhaṣitum) - to bark; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हन्तुं (hantum) - to bite; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अवसृज्यते (avasṛjyate) - is let loose; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सम्भाषणार्थाय (sambhāṣaṇārthāya) - for the purpose of conversation; सर्वशास्त्रवधाय (sarvaśāstravadhāya) - for the destruction of all śāstras; च (ca) - and; अल्पश्रुताः (alpaśrutāḥ) - those of little learning; कुतर्काः (kutarkāḥ) - those with false logic; च (ca) - and; दृष्टाः (dṛṣṭāḥ) - seen; स्पृष्टाः (spṛṣṭāḥ) - touched; कुपण्डिताः (kupaṇḍitāḥ) - bad scholars;]
(Just as a dog is let loose to bark and indeed to bite, thus for the purpose of conversation and for the destruction of all śāstras, those of little learning, those with false logic, seen, touched, bad scholars.)
Just as a dog is set loose to bark and bite, so too, for the sake of argument and the destruction of all śāstras, those with little learning and false logic—bad scholars—are seen and encountered. (13-37-15)
श्रुतिस्मृतीतिहासादिपुराणारण्यवेदिनः। अनुरुन्ध्याद्बहुज्ञांश्च सारज्ञांश्चैव पण्डितान् ॥१३-३७-१६॥
śrutismṛtītihāsādipurāṇāraṇyavedinaḥ। anurundhyādbahujñāṃśca sārajñāṃścaiva paṇḍitān ॥13-37-16॥
[श्रुति (śruti) - Veda; स्मृति (smṛti) - tradition; इतिहास (itihāsa) - epic; history; आदि (ādi) - and so on; etc.; पुराण (purāṇa) - Purāṇa; आरण्य (āraṇya) - forest text; वेदिनः (vedinaḥ) - knowers; अनुरुन्ध्यात् (anurundhyāt) - should seek; should pursue; बहुज्ञान् (bahujñān) - those who know much; च (ca) - and; सारज्ञान् (sārajñān) - those who know the essence; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पण्डितान् (paṇḍitān) - learned ones;]
(Veda, tradition, epic, and so on, Purāṇa, forest text knowers; should seek those who know much and those who know the essence and indeed learned ones.)
One should seek out those who are knowers of the Veda, tradition, epics, Purāṇas, forest texts, as well as those who are very knowledgeable, those who know the essence, and indeed, the learned ones. (13-37-16)
लोकयात्रा च द्रष्टव्या धर्मश्चात्महितानि च। एवं नरो वर्तमानः शाश्वतीरेधते समाः ॥१३-३७-१७॥
lokayātrā ca draṣṭavyā dharmaś cātmahitāni ca। evaṃ naro vartamānaḥ śāśvatīr edhate samāḥ ॥13-37-17॥
[लोकयात्रा (lokayātrā) - worldly conduct; च (ca) - and; द्रष्टव्या (draṣṭavyā) - to be observed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; च (ca) - and; आत्महितानि (ātmahitāni) - self-beneficial acts; च (ca) - and; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; नरः (naraḥ) - man; वर्तमानः (vartamānaḥ) - conducting himself; शाश्वतीः (śāśvatīḥ) - eternal; एधते (edhate) - prospers; समाः (samāḥ) - years;]
(Worldly conduct and to be observed, righteousness and self-beneficial acts and; thus man conducting himself, eternal prospers years.)
A man who observes worldly conduct, righteousness, and acts beneficial to himself in this way prospers for eternal years. (13-37-17)
ऋणमुन्मुच्य देवानामृषीणां च तथैव च। पितॄणामथ विप्राणामतिथीनां च पञ्चमम् ॥१३-३७-१८॥
ṛṇam-unmucya devānām ṛṣīṇāṃ ca tathaiva ca। pitṝṇām atha viprāṇām atithīnām ca pañcamam ॥13-37-18॥
[ऋणम् (ṛṇam) - debt; उन्मुच्य (unmucya) - having released; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; च (ca) - and; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - of the ancestors; अथ (atha) - then; विप्राणाम् (viprāṇām) - of the brāhmaṇas; अतिथीनाम् (atithīnām) - of the guests; च (ca) - and; पञ्चमम् (pañcamam) - the fifth;]
(Having released the debt of the gods, of the sages, and likewise, of the ancestors, then of the brāhmaṇas, of the guests, and the fifth.)
Having discharged the debts to the gods, sages, ancestors, brāhmaṇas, and guests, which are the five (debts). (13-37-18)
पर्यायेण विशुद्धेन सुनिर्णिक्तेन कर्मणा। एवं गृहस्थः कर्माणि कुर्वन्धर्मान्न हीयते ॥१३-३७-१९॥
paryāyeṇa viśuddhena sunirṇiktena karmaṇā। evaṃ gṛhasthaḥ karmāṇi kurvan dharmān na hīyate ॥13-37-19॥
[पर्यायेण (paryāyeṇa) - by succession; by turn; by order; विशुद्धेन (viśuddhena) - by purified; by cleansed; सुनिर्णिक्तेन (sunirṇiktena) - by well-determined; by thoroughly decided; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; by deed; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; गृहस्थः (gṛhasthaḥ) - householder; one who stays in the house; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; deeds; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - doing; performing; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from dharma; from righteousness; न (na) - not; हीयते (hīyate) - is deprived; is diminished;]
(By succession, by purified, by well-determined action, thus the householder performing actions is not deprived from dharma.)
Thus, when a householder performs actions in succession, with purity and thorough determination, he is not deprived of righteousness. (13-37-19)
