वृक्षान्पद्मोत्पलधरान्सर्वर्तुकुसुमांस्तथा। विमानच्छन्दकांश्चापि प्रासादान्पद्मसंनिभान् ॥१३-५४-७॥

पर्यङ्कान्सर्वसौवर्णान्परार्ध्यास्तरणास्तृतान्। भक्ष्यभोज्यमनन्तं च तत्र तत्रोपकल्पितम् ॥१३-५४-९॥
paryaṅkān sarva-sauvarṇān parārdhyā-staraṇāṁs tṛtān| bhakṣya-bhojya-manantaṁ ca tatra tatra upakalpitam ॥13-54-9॥

The king heard there the very sweet sound of songs, and likewise the sound of recitation, as well as the very sweet voices of swans. (13-54-14)
तं दृष्ट्वात्यद्भुतं राजा मनसाचिन्तयत्तदा। स्वप्नोऽयं चित्तविभ्रंश उताहो सत्यमेव तु ॥१३-५४-१५॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvātyadbhutaṃ rājā manasācintayattadā। svapno'yaṃ cittavibhraṃśa utāho satyameva tu॥13-54-15॥

(Him having seen extremely wonderful, the king in (his) mind thought then. Dream this, confusion of mind, or or truth indeed but.)
Having seen him, who was extremely wonderful, the king then thought in his mind: Is this a dream, a confusion of the mind, or is it indeed the truth? (13-54-15)
अहो सह शरीरेण प्राप्तोऽस्मि परमां गतिम्। उत्तरान्वा कुरून्पुण्यानथ वाप्यमरावतीम् ॥१३-५४-१६॥
aho saha śarīreṇa prāpto'smi paramāṃ gatim। uttarānvā kurūn puṇyān atha vāpy amarāvatīm ॥13-54-16॥

(Ah, with the body I have attained the supreme goal; or the northern (holy) Kurus, or else even Amarāvatī.)

किं त्विदं महदाश्चर्यं सम्पश्यामीत्यचिन्तयत्। एवं सञ्चिन्तयन्नेव ददर्श मुनिपुङ्गवम् ॥१३-५४-१७॥
kiṁ tvidam mahadāścaryaṁ sampaśyāmītyacintayat। evaṁ sañcintayanneva dadarśa munipuṅgavam ॥13-54-17॥

तस्मिन्विमाने सौवर्णे मणिस्तम्भसमाकुले। महार्हे शयने दिव्ये शयानं भृगुनन्दनम् ॥१३-५४-१८॥
tasmin vimāne sauvarṇe maṇi-stambha-samākule। mahārhe śayane divye śayānaṃ bhṛgu-nandanam॥13-54-18॥

तमभ्ययात्प्रहर्षेण नरेन्द्रः सह भार्यया। अन्तर्हितस्ततो भूयश्च्यवनः शयनं च तत् ॥१३-५४-१९॥
tam abhyayāt praharṣeṇa narendraḥ saha bhāryayā। antarhitaḥ tato bhūyaḥ cyavanaḥ śayanaṃ ca tat ॥13-54-19॥

tato'nyasmin vanoddeśe punar eva dadarśa tam। kauśyāṃ bṛsyāṃ samāsīnaṃ japamānaṃ mahāvratam॥ evaṃ yogabalād vipro mohayāmāsa pārthivam॥13-54-20॥

(Then in another part of the forest, again indeed, he saw him, seated on a kusa-grass and deerskin, reciting (mantra), a great vows-holder. Thus, by the power of yoga, the Brāhmaṇa bewildered the king.)

क्षणेन तद्वनं चैव ते चैवाप्सरसां गणाः। गन्धर्वाः पादपाश्चैव सर्वमन्तरधीयत ॥१३-५४-२१॥
kṣaṇena tad vanaṃ caiva te caiva apsarasāṃ gaṇāḥ। gandharvāḥ pādapāś caiva sarvam antaradhīyata॥13-54-21॥

(In a moment, that forest and indeed those groups of apsarases, gandharvas, trees, and indeed everything disappeared.)
In a moment, that forest, the apsaras groups, gandharvas, the trees, and everything else disappeared. (13-54-21)
निःशब्दमभवच्चापि गङ्गाकूलं पुनर्नृप। कुशवल्मीकभूयिष्ठं बभूव च यथा पुरा ॥१३-५४-२२॥
niḥśabdam abhavac cāpi gaṅgākūlaṃ punar nṛpa। kuśavalmīkabhūyiṣṭhaṃ babhūva ca yathā purā॥ 13-54-22॥
[निःशब्दम् (niḥśabdam) - silent; अभवच्च (abhavac ca) - became and; अपि (api) - also; गङ्गाकूलम् (gaṅgākūlam) - Ganga’s bank; पुनः (punar) - again; नृप (nṛpa) - O King; कुश-वल्मीका-भूयिष्ठम् (kuśa-valmīka-bhūyiṣṭham) - full of kuśa grass and ant-hills; बभूव (babhūva) - became; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(Silent it became and also the Ganga’s bank again, O King. Full of kuśa grass and ant-hills became and as formerly.)
O King, again the bank of the Ganga became silent, filled mostly with kuśa grass and ant-hills, just as before. (13-54-22)
ततः स राजा कुशिकः सभार्यस्तेन कर्मणा। विस्मयं परमं प्राप्तस्तद्दृष्ट्वा महदद्भुतम् ॥१३-५४-२३॥
tataḥ sa rājā kuśikaḥ sabhāryas tena karmaṇā। vismayaṃ paramaṃ prāptas taddṛṣṭvā mahad adbhutam ॥13-54-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; कुशिकः (kuśikaḥ) - Kuśika; सभार्यः (sabhāryaḥ) - with (his) wife; तेन (tena) - by that; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - action; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - astonishment; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - obtained; तत् (tat) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; महत् (mahat) - great; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonder;]
(Then he king Kuśika with (his) wife, by that action, supreme astonishment obtained, having seen that great wonder.)
Then King Kuśika, together with his wife, was greatly astonished, having witnessed that great marvel. (13-54-23)
ततः प्रोवाच कुशिको भार्यां हर्षसमन्वितः। पश्य भद्रे यथा भावाश्चित्रा दृष्टाः सुदुर्लभाः ॥१३-५४-२४॥
tataḥ provāca kuśiko bhāryāṃ harṣasamanvitaḥ। paśya bhadre yathā bhāvaś citrā dṛṣṭāḥ sudurlabhāḥ ॥13-54-24॥

(Then Kuśika, filled with joy, spoke to (his) wife: "Look, O good lady, how emotions, varied and very rare, have been seen." (13-54-24))

प्रसादाद्भृगुमुख्यस्य किमन्यत्र तपोबलात्। तपसा तदवाप्यं हि यन्न शक्यं मनोरथैः ॥१३-५४-२५॥
prasādādbhṛgumukhyasya kimanyatra tapobalāt। tapasā tadavāpyaṃ hi yanna śakyaṃ manorathaiḥ ॥13-54-25॥
[प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - from favor; भृगु-मुख्यस्य (bhṛgu-mukhyasya) - of the chief of Bhṛgu; किम् (kim) - what; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; तपः-बलात् (tapaḥ-balāt) - from the strength of penance; तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; तत् (tat) - that; अवाप्यम् (avāpyam) - to be attained; हि (hi) - indeed; यत् (yat) - which; न (na) - not; शक्यम् (śakyaṃ) - possible; मनोरथैः (manorathaiḥ) - by desires;]
(From the favor of the chief of Bhṛgu, what (is attainable) elsewhere from the strength of penance? By penance that indeed is to be attained which is not possible by desires.)
What can be attained from the favor of the chief of Bhṛgu, except through the strength of penance? For that which cannot be attained by mere desires is surely attained by penance. (13-54-25)
त्रैलोक्यराज्यादपि हि तप एव विशिष्यते। तपसा हि सुतप्तेन क्रीडत्येष तपोधनः ॥१३-५४-२६॥
trailokyarājyād api hi tapa eva viśiṣyate। tapasā hi sutaptena krīḍatyeṣa tapodhanaḥ ॥13-54-26॥
[त्रैलोक्यराज्यात् (trailokyarājyāt) - from the sovereignty of the three worlds; अपि (api) - even; हि (hi) - indeed; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; एव (eva) - alone; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is superior; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; हि (hi) - indeed; सुतप्तेन (sutaptena) - by well-performed austerity; क्रीडति (krīḍati) - plays; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; तपोधनः (tapodhanaḥ) - one whose wealth is austerity;]
(From the sovereignty of the three worlds even, indeed austerity alone is superior. By austerity indeed, by well-performed austerity, plays this one whose wealth is austerity.)
Austerity alone is indeed superior even to the sovereignty of the three worlds. This one whose wealth is austerity delights through austerity well performed. (13-54-26)
अहो प्रभावो ब्रह्मर्षेश्च्यवनस्य महात्मनः। इच्छन्नेष तपोवीर्यादन्याँल्लोकान्सृजेदपि ॥१३-५४-२७॥
aho prabhāvo brahmarṣeś cyavanasya mahātmanaḥ। icchan eṣa tapovīryād anyān lokān sṛjet api॥13-54-27॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; प्रभावः (prabhāvaḥ) - splendor; ब्रह्मर्षेः (brahmarṣeḥ) - of the Brahmarṣi; च्यवनस्य (cyavanasya) - of Cyavana; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; इच्छन् (icchan) - desiring; एष (eṣa) - he; तपः-वीर्याद् (tapo-vīryāt) - from ascetic power; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; सृजेत् (sṛjet) - might create; अपि (api) - even;]
(Indeed, the splendor of the great-souled Brahmarṣi Cyavana; desiring, he, from ascetic power, other worlds might even create.)
Indeed, such is the power of the great-souled Brahmarṣi Cyavana; if he wished, he could even create other worlds by the strength of his penance. (13-54-27)
ब्राह्मणा एव जायेरन्पुण्यवाग्बुद्धिकर्मणः। उत्सहेदिह कर्तुं हि कोऽन्यो वै च्यवनादृते ॥१३-५४-२८॥
brāhmaṇā eva jāyeran puṇya-vāk-buddhi-karmaṇaḥ। utsahed iha kartuṃ hi ko'anyo vai cyavanād ṛte॥13-54-28॥
[ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; (priests; learned men); एव (eva) - indeed; only; जायेरन् (jāyeran) - should be born; (may come into being); पुण्य (puṇya) - virtuous; auspicious; वाक् (vāk) - speech; बुद्धि (buddhi) - intellect; कर्मणः (karmaṇaḥ) - of action; उत्सहेत् (utsahet) - should be able; (may strive;) इह (iha) - here; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; (to perform;) हि (hi) - indeed; for; कः (kaḥ) - who; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; वै (vai) - indeed; च्यवनात् (cyavanāt) - apart from Cyavana; (except Cyavana;) ऋते (ṛte) - excluding; without;]
(Brāhmaṇas indeed should be born endowed with virtuous speech, intellect, and action; here, who indeed, other than Cyavana, should be able to do (this)?)
Brāhmaṇas should truly be born endowed with virtuous speech, intellect, and deeds; indeed, who else here but Cyavana could possibly accomplish this? (13-54-28)
ब्राह्मण्यं दुर्लभं लोके राज्यं हि सुलभं नरैः। ब्राह्मण्यस्य प्रभावाद्धि रथे युक्तौ स्वधुर्यवत् ॥१३-५४-२९॥
brāhmaṇyaṃ durlabhaṃ loke rājyaṃ hi sulabhaṃ naraiḥ। brāhmaṇyasya prabhāvāddhi rathe yuktau svadhuryavat ॥13-54-29॥
[ब्राह्मण्यं (brāhmaṇyam) - the state of being a Brāhmaṇa; दुर्लभं (durlabham) - difficult to obtain; लोके (loke) - in the world; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; हि (hi) - indeed; सुलभं (sulabham) - easy to obtain; नरैः (naraiḥ) - by men; ब्राह्मण्यस्य (brāhmaṇyasya) - of Brāhmaṇahood; प्रभावात् (prabhāvāt) - from the power; हि (hi) - indeed; रथे (rathe) - in a chariot; युक्तौ (yuktau) - when harnessed; स्वधुर्यवत् (svadhuryavat) - like the (independent) chariot horse;]
(Brāhmaṇahood difficult to obtain in the world, kingdom indeed easy to obtain by men. Of Brāhmaṇahood from the power indeed, in a chariot when harnessed like the chariot horse.)
Brāhmaṇahood is difficult to attain in this world, whereas kingship is easily attained by men. Indeed, by the power of Brāhmaṇahood, just as in a chariot two horses are yoked, so too (other attainments are drawn along) like the leading horse. (13-54-29)
इत्येवं चिन्तयानः स विदितश्च्यवनस्य वै। सम्प्रेक्ष्योवाच स नृपं क्षिप्रमागम्यतामिति ॥१३-५४-३०॥
ityevaṃ cintayānaḥ sa viditaś cyavanasya vai। samprekṣyovāca sa nṛpaṃ kṣipram āgamyatām iti ॥13-54-30॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवं (evaṃ) - in this way; चिन्तयानः (cintayānaḥ) - thinking; स (sa) - he; विदितः (viditaḥ) - having been known; च्यवनस्य (cyavanasya) - of Cyavana; वै (vai) - indeed; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having seen; उवाच (uvāca) - he said; स (sa) - he; नृपम् (nṛpam) - to the king; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; आगम्यताम् (āgamyatām) - let him come; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Thus, in this way, thinking, he, having been known, of Cyavana indeed, having seen, said, he, to the king, quickly, let him come, thus.)
Thus, as he was thinking in this manner, having learned of Cyavana, and having observed, he said to the king, “Let him come quickly.” (13-54-30)
इत्युक्तः सहभार्यस्तमभ्यगच्छन्महामुनिम्। शिरसा वन्दनीयं तमवन्दत स पार्थिवः ॥१३-५४-३१॥
ity-uktaḥ saha-bhāryaḥ tam abhyagacchan mahā-munim। śirasā vandanīyaṃ tam avandata sa pārthivaḥ ॥13-54-31॥

(Thus having been addressed, together with (his) wife, he approached him, the great sage. With (his) head (bent), the venerable one, him, he bowed, the king.)
Thus addressed, the king, along with his wife, approached the great sage and bowed to him with his head. (13-54-31)
तस्याशिषः प्रयुज्याथ स मुनिस्तं नराधिपम्। निषीदेत्यब्रवीद्धीमान्सान्त्वयन्पुरुषर्षभ ॥१३-५४-३२॥
tasyāśiṣaḥ prayujyātha sa munis taṁ narādhipam। niṣīdety abravīd dhīmān sāntvayan puruṣarṣabha ॥13-54-32॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; (of him); आशिषः (āśiṣaḥ) - blessings; प्रयुज्य (prayujya) - having uttered; अथ (atha) - then; स (sa) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; तम् (tam) - him; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - the king; (lord of men); निषीद (niṣīda) - sit; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; said; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise; सान्त्वयन् (sāntvayan) - consoling; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - best of men;]
(Having uttered his blessings, then the sage (he) to that king said thus: 'Sit,' consoling, the wise one (said), O best of men.)
Then, having bestowed his blessings, the wise sage consoled the best of men—the king—and said to him: 'Sit.' (13-54-32)
ततः प्रकृतिमापन्नो भार्गवो नृपते नृपम्। उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा तर्पयन्निव भारत ॥१३-५४-३३॥
tataḥ prakṛtim-āpanno bhārgavo nṛpate nṛpam। uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā tarpayann-iva bhārata ॥13-54-33॥

(Then, having attained his natural state, Bhārgava, O king, to the king said with gentle speech, as if gratifying, O Bhārata.)
Then Bhārgava, having regained his composure, addressed the king with gentle words, as if to please him, O Bhārata. (13-54-33)
राजन्सम्यग्जितानीह पञ्च पञ्चसु यत्त्वया। मनःषष्ठानीन्द्रियाणि कृच्छ्रान्मुक्तोऽसि तेन वै ॥१३-५४-३४॥
rājansam-yag-jitāniha pañca pañcasu yat-tvayā| manaḥ-ṣaṣṭhāni-indriyāṇi kṛcchrān-mukto’si tena vai ॥13-54-34॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; सम्यक् (samyak) - rightly; जितानि (jitāni) - conquered; इह (iha) - here; पञ्च (pañca) - five; पञ्चसु (pañcasu) - among the five; यत् (yat) - which; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मनः-षष्ठानि (manaḥ-ṣaṣṭhāni) - with the mind as the sixth; इन्द्रियाणि (indriyāṇi) - the senses; कृच्छ्रात् (kṛcchrāt) - from difficulty; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - liberated; असि (asi) - you are; तेन (tena) - by that; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(O king, the five (senses) rightly conquered here among the five, which by you, the senses with the mind as sixth, from difficulty, liberated you are by that indeed.)
O king, because you have rightly conquered the five senses and the mind as the sixth among the five, you are thereby indeed liberated from difficulties. (13-54-34)
सम्यगाराधितः पुत्र त्वयाहं वदतां वर। न हि ते वृजिनं किञ्चित्सुसूक्ष्ममपि विद्यते ॥१३-५४-३५॥
samyag-ārādhitaḥ putra tvayāhaṃ vadatāṃ vara। na hi te vṛjinaṃ kiñcit susūkṣmam api vidyate॥13-54-35॥
[सम्यक्-आराधितः (samyag-ārādhitaḥ) - properly honored; पुत्र (putra) - son; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; वदतां (vadatām) - of speakers; वर (vara) - best; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - in you; वृजिनं (vṛjinam) - sin; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - even a little; सुसूक्ष्मम् (susūkṣmam) - very subtle; अपि (api) - even; विध्यते (vidyate) - is found;]
(Properly honored, son, by you I am, best of speakers. Not indeed in you is sin, even the very slightest, found.)
O son, you have properly honored me, best among speakers. Indeed, not even the slightest sin is found in you. (13-54-35)
अनुजानीहि मां राजन्गमिष्यामि यथागतम्। प्रीतोऽस्मि तव राजेन्द्र वरश्च प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥१३-५४-३६॥
anujānīhi māṁ rājan gamiṣyāmi yathāgatam | prīto'smi tava rājendra varaś ca pratigṛhyatām ॥13-54-36॥
[अनुजानीहि (anujānīhi) - permit; मां (mām) - me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; यथा (yathā) - as; आगतम् (āgatam) - (I) came; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तव (tava) - of you; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O chief of kings; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; च (ca) - and; प्रतिगृह्यताम् (pratigṛhyatām) - let it be accepted;]
(Permit me, O king, I shall go as (I) came. Pleased I am of you, O chief of kings, and let the boon be accepted.)
O king, permit me; I shall depart as I came. I am pleased with you, O chief of kings; also, let your boon be accepted. (13-54-36)

एष एव वरो मुख्यः प्राप्तो मे भृगुनन्दन। यत्प्रीतोऽसि समाचारात्कुलं पूतं ममानघ ॥१३-५४-३८॥
eṣa eva varo mukhyaḥ prāpto me bhṛgunandana. yat prīto'si samācārāt kulaṃ pūtaṃ mama anagha ॥13-54-38॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; एव (eva) - indeed; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; मुख्यः (mukhyaḥ) - principal; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - obtained; मे (me) - by me; भृगुनन्दन (bhṛgunandana) - O descendant of Bhṛgu; यत् (yat) - that; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; असि (asi) - you are; समाचारात् (samācārāt) - from the news; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; पूतं (pūtaṃ) - purified; मम (mama) - my; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(This indeed boon principal obtained by me O descendant of Bhṛgu. That pleased you are from the news, family purified my O sinless one. (13-54-38))

एष मेऽनुग्रहो विप्र जीविते च प्रयोजनम्। एतद्राज्यफलं चैव तपश्चैतत्परं मम ॥१३-५४-३९॥
eṣa me'nugraho vipra jīvite ca prayojanam। etad rājya-phalaṃ caiva tapaś caitat paraṃ mama ॥13-54-39॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; मेऽनुग्रहः (me'nugrahaḥ) - my favor; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; जीविते (jīvite) - in life; च (ca) - and; प्रयोजनम् (prayojanam) - purpose; एतत् (etat) - this; राज्यफलं (rājya-phalam) - kingdom-fruit; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; परम् (param) - supreme; मम (mama) - of me;]
(This is my favor, brāhmaṇa, and the purpose in (my) life. This is the fruit of the kingdom indeed, and this austerity, this (is) supreme for me.)
This is my favor, O brāhmaṇa, and the very purpose of my life. This is both the reward of kingship, and this austerity—this is supreme for me. (13-54-39)
यदि तु प्रीतिमान्विप्र मयि त्वं भृगुनन्दन। अस्ति मे संशयः कश्चित्तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१३-५४-४०॥
yadi tu prītimān vipra mayi tvaṃ bhṛgunandana। asti me saṃśayaḥ kaścit tan me vyākhyātum arhasi ॥13-54-40॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; तु (tu) - but; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - affectionate; विप्र (vipra) - Brāhmaṇa; मयि (mayi) - towards me; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; भृगु-नन्दन (bhṛgu-nandana) - O descendant of Bhṛgu; अस्ति (asti) - there is; मे (me) - to me; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; व्याख्यातुम् (vyākhyātum) - to explain; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(If but affectionate Brāhmaṇa towards me you, O descendant of Bhṛgu, there is to me some doubt, that to me to explain you ought.)
But if you, O affectionate Brāhmaṇa, have love for me, O descendant of Bhṛgu, I have some doubt; you ought to explain that to me. (13-54-40)
