वरश्च गृह्यतां मत्तो यश्च ते संशयो हृदि। तं च ब्रूहि नरश्रेष्ठ सर्वं सम्पादयामि ते ॥१३-५५-१॥
varaś ca gṛhyatāṃ matto yaś ca te saṃśayo hṛdi। taṃ ca brūhi naraśreṣṭha sarvaṃ sampādayāmi te ॥13-55-1॥
[वरः (varaḥ) - boon; च (ca) - and; गृह्यताम् (gṛhyatām) - let it be accepted; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; यः (yaḥ) - which; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - for you; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (your) heart; तं (taṃ) - that; च (ca) - and; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; सम्पादयामि (sampādayāmi) - I shall accomplish; ते (te) - for you;]
(And let the boon be accepted from me, and which doubt is in your heart, that also speak, O best of men; all (of it) I shall accomplish for you.)
Accept a boon from me, O best of men, and tell me whatever doubt is in your heart; I will accomplish everything for you. (13-55-1)

यदि प्रीतोऽसि भगवंस्ततो मे वद भार्गव। कारणं श्रोतुमिच्छामि मद्गृहे वासकारितम् ॥१३-५५-२॥
yadi prīto'si bhagavaṃs tato me vada bhārgava। kāraṇaṃ śrotum icchāmi mad-gṛhe vāsa-kāritam ॥13-55-2॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; असि (asi) - you are; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O esteemed one; ततः (tataḥ) - then; मे (me) - to me; वद (vada) - tell; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O descendant of Bhṛgu; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; मद्गृहे (mad-gṛhe) - in my house; वासकारितम् (vāsa-kāritam) - the causing of residence;]
(If pleased you are, O esteemed one, then to me tell, O descendant of Bhṛgu. The cause to hear I desire—the causing of residence in my house.)
If you are pleased, O revered one, then tell me, O Bhārgava. I wish to hear the reason for making you stay in my house. (13-55-2)
शयनं चैकपार्श्वेन दिवसानेकविंशतिम्। अकिञ्चिदुक्त्वा गमनं बहिश्च मुनिपुङ्गव ॥१३-५५-३॥
śayanaṃ caika-pārśvena divasān ekaviṃśatim | akiñcid uktvā gamanaṃ bahiś ca muni-puṅgava ॥13-55-3॥

O foremost sage, lying on one side for twenty-one days, and without saying anything, going outside.
अन्तर्धानमकस्माच्च पुनरेव च दर्शनम्। पुनश्च शयनं विप्र दिवसानेकविंशतिम् ॥१३-५५-४॥
antardhānam akasmāc ca punar eva ca darśanam। punaś ca śayanaṃ vipra divasān ekaviṃśatim ॥13-55-4॥

(Disappearance suddenly and again indeed and appearance. Again and lying down, O Brāhmaṇa, days twenty-one.)
Disappearance occurred suddenly, and again there was an appearance. Again, O Brāhmaṇa, there was lying down for twenty-one days. (13-55-4)
तैलाभ्यक्तस्य गमनं भोजनं च गृहे मम। समुपानीय विविधं यद्दग्धं जातवेदसा ॥ निर्याणं च रथेनाशु सहसा यत्कृतं त्वया ॥१३-५५-५॥
tailābhyaktasya gamanaṁ bhojanaṁ ca gṛhe mama। samupānīya vividhaṁ yaddagdhaṁ jātavedasā ॥ niryāṇaṁ ca rathenāśu sahasā yatkṛtaṁ tvayā ॥13-55-5॥
[तैलाभ्यक्तस्य (tailābhyaktasya) - anointed with oil; of (the one who is) गमनं (gamanaṁ) - going; भोजनं (bhojanaṁ) - eating; च (ca) - and; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; मम (mama) - my; समुपानीय (samupānīya) - having brought together; विविधं (vividhaṁ) - various; यत् (yat) - which; दग्धं (dagdhaṁ) - burnt; जातवेदसा (jātavedasā) - by fire (Agni); निर्याणं (niryāṇaṁ) - departure; च (ca) - and; रथेन (rathena) - by a chariot; आशु (āśu) - quickly; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; यत् (yat) - which; कृतं (kṛtaṁ) - done; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Of the one anointed with oil, going, and eating in my house; having brought together various things which were burnt by fire; and the departure by chariot quickly and suddenly which was done by you.)
The going and eating in my house by the one anointed with oil, the various things you brought together and which were burnt by fire, and also the swift, sudden departure by chariot which was done by you. (13-55-5)
धनानां च विसर्गस्य वनस्यापि च दर्शनम्। प्रासादानां बहूनां च काञ्चनानां महामुने ॥१३-५५-६॥
dhanānāṃ ca visargasya vanasyāpi ca darśanam। prāsādānāṃ bahūnāṃ ca kāñcanānāṃ mahāmune॥ 13-55-6॥
[धनानां (dhanānāṃ) - of riches; च (ca) - and; विसर्गस्य (visargasya) - of distribution; वनस्यापि (vanasyāpi) - of forest also; च (ca) - and; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; प्रासादानां (prāsādānāṃ) - of palaces; बहूनां (bahūnāṃ) - of many; च (ca) - and; काञ्चनानां (kāñcanānāṃ) - of gold; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage;]
(The sight of the riches and distribution, and of the forest also, and the sight of many palaces and of gold, O great sage.)
O great sage, the sight of riches and their distribution, as well as of the forest, and of many golden palaces. (13-55-6)
मणिविद्रुमपादानां पर्यङ्कानां च दर्शनम्। पुनश्चादर्शनं तस्य श्रोतुमिच्छामि कारणम् ॥१३-५५-७॥
maṇividrumapādānāṃ paryaṅkānāṃ ca darśanam। punaś cādarśanaṃ tasya śrotum icchāmi kāraṇam ॥13-55-7॥
[मणिविद्रुमपादानां (maṇividrumapādānāṃ) - of couches having legs of jewels and coral; पर्यङ्कानां (paryaṅkānāṃ) - of couches; च (ca) - and; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - the sight; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; अदर्शनम् (adarśanam) - disappearance; तस्य (tasya) - of that; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - the cause;]
(Of the couches with legs of jewels and coral, and of couches, the sight; again, and the disappearance of that, to hear I wish the cause.)
I wish to hear the cause of the appearance and then disappearance of those couches with legs of jewels and coral. (13-55-7)
अतीव ह्यत्र मुह्यामि चिन्तयानो दिवानिशम्। न चैवात्राधिगच्छामि सर्वस्यास्य विनिश्चयम् ॥ एतदिच्छामि कार्त्स्न्येन सत्यं श्रोतुं तपोधन ॥१३-५५-८॥
atīva hyatra muhyāmi cintayāno divāniśam. na caivātrādhigacchāmi sarvasyāsya viniścayam ॥ etadicchāmi kārtsnyena satyaṁ śrotuṁ tapodhana ॥13-55-8॥
[अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; हि (hi) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; मुह्यामि (muhyāmi) - I am bewildered; चिन्तयानः (cintayānaḥ) - thinking; दिवा-निशम् (divā-niśam) - day and night; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; अधिगच्छामि (adhigacchāmi) - I attain (understand); सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all (this); अस्य (asya) - of this; विनिश्चयम् (viniścayam) - certainty (definite conclusion); एतत् (etat) - this; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; कार्त्स्न्येन (kārtsnyena) - in entirety; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truly; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O possessor of austerity (O ascetic);]
(Exceedingly indeed here I am bewildered, thinking day and night. Not and indeed here I do attain the certainty of all this. This I wish, in entirety, truly to hear, O possessor of austerity.)
Indeed, here I am greatly bewildered, constantly thinking day and night; and I am unable to arrive at any definite conclusion about all this. I therefore wish to hear the complete and true answer to this from you, O ascetic. (13-55-8)

शृणु सर्वमशेषेण यदिदं येन हेतुना। न हि शक्यमनाख्यातुमेवं पृष्टेन पार्थिव ॥१३-५५-९॥
śṛṇu sarvamaśeṣeṇa yadidaṃ yena hetunā। na hi śakyamanākhyātumevaṃ pṛṣṭena pārthiva ॥13-55-9॥
[शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अशेषेण (aśeṣeṇa) - completely; without remainder; यत् (yat) - that which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; येन (yena) - by which; हेतुना (hetunā) - with reason; by cause; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; अनाख्यातुम् (anākhyātum) - to not state; to not narrate; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; पृष्टेन (pṛṣṭena) - being asked; by one who is questioned; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Listen completely all, that which this, by which reason. Not indeed possible to not state thus, being asked, O king. (13-55-9))
O king, listen to everything completely: that which is here and the reason for it. Indeed, upon being asked thus, it is not possible not to narrate it. (13-55-9)
पितामहस्य वदतः पुरा देवसमागमे। श्रुतवानस्मि यद्राजंस्तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥१३-५५-१०॥
pitāmahasya vadataḥ purā deva-samāgame। śrutavānasmi yad rājan tan me nigadataḥ śṛṇu॥13-55-10॥
[पितामहस्य (pitāmahasya) - of the grandsire; (i.e., Brahmā); वदतः (vadataḥ) - speaking; (genitive singular); पुरा (purā) - formerly; देवसमागमे (deva-samāgame) - in the assembly of the gods; श्रुतवानस्मि (śrutavānasmi) - I have heard; यत् (yad) - what; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; निगदतः (nigadataḥ) - speaking; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear;]
(Of the grandsire speaking, formerly, in the assembly of the gods, I have heard what, O king, that to me (as I am) speaking, hear.)
O king, what I heard long ago from the grandsire when he was speaking in the assembly of the gods, hear that from me now. (13-55-10)
ब्रह्मक्षत्रविरोधेन भविता कुलसङ्करः। पौत्रस्ते भविता राजंस्तेजोवीर्यसमन्वितः ॥१३-५५-११॥
brahma-kṣatra-virodhena bhavitā kula-saṅkaraḥ। pautras te bhavitā rājan tejo-vīrya-samanvitaḥ॥13-55-11॥
[ब्रह्मक्षत्रविरोधेन (brahma-kṣatra-virodhena) - by the opposition between (those of) brahma and kṣatra (castes); भविता (bhavitā) - will arise; will be; will happen; कुलसङ्करः (kula-saṅkaraḥ) - mixture of families; degeneration of lineages; पौत्रः (pautraḥ) - grandson; ते (te) - your; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; will arise; राजन् (rājan) - O King; तेजःवीर्यसमन्वितः (tejaḥ-vīrya-samanvitaḥ) - endowed with energy and manliness;]
(By the opposition between brahma and kṣatra, mixture of families will arise. Your grandson will arise, O King, endowed with energy and manliness. (13-55-11))
Because of conflict between the brahma and kṣatra classes, there will be a mixture of lineages. O King, your grandson will be born endowed with energy and valor. (13-55-11)
ततः स्वकुलरक्षार्थमहं त्वा समुपागमम्। चिकीर्षन्कुशिकोच्छेदं संदिधक्षुः कुलं तव ॥१३-५५-१२॥
tataḥ svakula-rakṣārtham ahaṃ tvā samupāgamam। cikīrṣan kuśika-ucchēdaṃ sandidhakṣuḥ kulaṃ tava ॥13-55-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; स्वकुलरक्षार्थम् (svakula-rakṣārtham) - for the purpose of protecting my own lineage; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वा (tvā) - you; समुपागमम् (samupāgamam) - approached; चिकीर्षन् (cikīrṣan) - desiring to do; कुशिकोच्छेदम् (kuśika-ucchēdam) - the destruction of the Kuśika (lineage); संदिधक्षुः (sandidhakṣuḥ) - intending; कुलम् (kulam) - lineage; तव (tava) - your;]
(Thereafter, for the protection of my own lineage, I approached you, desiring to effect the destruction of the Kuśika, intending your lineage.)
Therefore, for the sake of protecting my lineage, I approached you, wishing to bring about the destruction of the Kuśika and intending (to harm) your family. (13-55-12)
ततोऽहमागम्य पुरा त्वामवोचं महीपते। नियमं कञ्चिदारप्स्ये शुश्रूषा क्रियतामिति ॥१३-५५-१३॥
tato'hamāgamya purā tvāmavocaṃ mahīpate. niyamaṃ kañcidārapsye śuśrūṣā kriyatāmiti ॥13-55-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; moving from that; अहम् (aham) - I; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; approaching; पुरा (purā) - formerly; before; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अवोचम् (avocam) - I said; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king; lord of the earth; नियमम् (niyamam) - discipline; observance; restraint; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - some; a certain; आरप्स्ये (ārapsye) - I shall undertake; I shall begin; शुश्रूषा (śuśrūṣā) - service; desire to serve; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; let it be made; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Then I, having come before, said to you, O king: 'I shall undertake a certain discipline; let service be done,' thus.)
Then, having come before, I said to you, O king: 'I will undertake a certain discipline; let service be performed.' (13-55-13)
न च ते दुष्कृतं किञ्चिदहमासादयं गृहे। तेन जीवसि राजर्षे न भवेथास्ततोऽन्यथा ॥१३-५५-१४॥
na ca te duṣkṛtaṃ kiñcid aham āsādayaṃ gṛhe। tena jīvasi rājarṣe na bhavethās tato'nyathā ॥13-55-14॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; दुष्कृतं (duṣkṛtam) - evil deed; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अहम् (aham) - I; आसादयम् (āsādayam) - have found; गृहे (gṛhe) - in (your) house; तेन (tena) - therefore; जीवसि (jīvasi) - you live; राजर्षे (rājarṣe) - O royal sage; न (na) - not; भवेथाः (bhavethāḥ) - you would be; तातः (tataḥ) - then; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(And I found not any evil deed in your house; therefore you live, O royal sage; otherwise you would not be (alive) then.)
And I have not found any evil deed in your house; therefore, O royal sage, you live—otherwise, it would not have been so. (13-55-14)
एतां बुद्धिं समास्थाय दिवसानेकविंशतिम्। सुप्तोऽस्मि यदि मां कश्चिद्बोधयेदिति पार्थिव ॥१३-५५-१५॥
etāṃ buddhiṃ samāsthāya divasānekaviṃśatim। supto'smi yadi māṃ kaścidbodhayediti pārthiva ॥13-55-15॥
[एतां (etāṃ) (etāṃ) - this; बुद्धिं (buddhim) (buddhim) - thought; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) (samāsthāya) - having adopted; दिवसानेकविंशतिम् (divasānekaviṃśatim) (divasānekaviṃśatim) - twenty-one days; सुप्तः (suptaḥ) (suptaḥ) - asleep; अस्मि (asmi) (asmi) - am; यदि (yadi) (yadi) - if; माम् (mām) (mām) - me; कश्चित् (kaścit) (kaścit) - someone; बोधयेत् (bodhayet) (bodhayet) - should awaken; इति (iti) (iti) - "thus"; पार्थिव (pārthiva) (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Having adopted this thought for twenty-one days, I am asleep; if someone should awaken me thus, O king.)
O king, having held this thought, I will sleep for twenty-one days; if someone awakens me, let them do so in this way. (13-55-15)
यदा त्वया सभार्येण संसुप्तो न प्रबोधितः। अहं तदैव ते प्रीतो मनसा राजसत्तम ॥१३-५५-१६॥
yadā tvayā sabhāryeṇa saṁsupto na prabodhitaḥ। ahaṁ tadaiva te prīto manasā rājasattama ॥13-55-16॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सभार्येण (sabhāryeṇa) - with (your) wife; संसुप्तः (saṁsuptaḥ) - asleep; न (na) - not; प्रबोधितः (prabodhitaḥ) - awakened; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; तदैव (tadaiva) - at that very (moment); ते (te) - with you; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; मनसा (manasā) - with (my) mind; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best among kings;]
(When by you, with (your) wife, (while) asleep, (I was) not awakened, I at that very moment with (my) mind (was) pleased, O best among kings.)
O best among kings, when you, sleeping with your wife, did not awaken me, I was pleased with you in my heart at that very moment. (13-55-16)
उत्थाय चास्मि निष्क्रान्तो यदि मां त्वं महीपते। पृच्छेः क्व यास्यसीत्येवं शपेयं त्वामिति प्रभो ॥१३-५५-१७॥
utthāya cāsmi niṣkrānto yadi māṁ tvaṁ mahīpate. pṛccheḥ kva yāsyasītyevaṁ śapeyaṁ tvāmiti prabho ॥13-55-17॥
[उत्थाय (utthāya) - having arisen; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; निष्क्रान्तः (niṣkrāntaḥ) - departed; यदि (yadi) - if; माम् (mām) - me; त्वम् (tvaṁ) - you; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king; पृच्छेः (pṛccheḥ) - you should ask; क्व (kva) - where; यास्यसि (yāsyasi) - you will go; इति (iti) - thus; एवं (evaṁ) - in this way; शपेयं (śapeyaṁ) - I would swear; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Having arisen and I am departed; if me you, O king, should ask, "Where will you go?" thus, in this way, I would swear you thus, O lord.)
O king, having arisen, if when I am departed, you should ask me, "Where will you go?"—in this way, O lord, I would declare an oath to you. (13-55-17)
अन्तर्हितश्चास्मि पुनः पुनरेव च ते गृहे। योगमास्थाय संविष्टो दिवसानेकविंशतिम् ॥१३-५५-१८॥
antarhitaś cāsmi punaḥ punar eva ca te gṛhe। yogam āsthāya saṁviṣṭo divasānekaviṁśatim ॥13-55-18॥
[अन्तर्हितः (antarhitaḥ) - disappeared; hidden; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punar) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; just; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; गृहे (gṛhe) - in (the) house; योगम् (yogam) - yoga (supernatural power); आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; having assumed; संविष्टः (saṁviṣṭaḥ) - settled; stayed; दिवसान् (divasān) - days (accusative plural); एकविंशतिम् (ekaviṁśatim) - twenty-one (accusative singular);]
(I am disappeared and again and again indeed in your house, having resorted to yoga, settled twenty-one days.)
I have repeatedly disappeared in your house; having assumed yogic power, I remained for twenty-one days. (13-55-18)
क्षुधितो मामसूयेथाः श्रमाद्वेति नराधिप। एतां बुद्धिं समास्थाय कर्शितौ वां मया क्षुधा ॥१३-५५-१९॥
kṣudhito māmasūyethāḥ śramādveti narādhipa। etāṃ buddhiṃ samāsthāya karṣitau vāṃ mayā kṣudhā ॥13-55-19॥
[क्षुधितः (kṣudhitaḥ) - hungry; माम् (mām) - me; असूयेथाः (asūyethāḥ) - should blame; श्रमात् (śramāt) - from fatigue; वेति (veti) - thinks; knows; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men; एतां (etām) - this; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - thought; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - having adopted; कर्शितौ (karṣitau) - emaciated (dual); वाम् (vāṃ) - you two; मया (mayā) - by me; क्षुधा (kṣudhā) - by hunger;]
(Hungry, me you should blame, from fatigue thinks, O lord of men. This thought having adopted, emaciated you two by me, by hunger.)
O lord of men, thinking that 'hungry, you should blame me due to fatigue,' adopt this thought: you two were emaciated by me out of hunger. (13-55-19)
न च तेऽभूत्सुसूक्ष्मोऽपि मन्युर्मनसि पार्थिव। सभार्यस्य नरश्रेष्ठ तेन ते प्रीतिमानहम् ॥१३-५५-२०॥
na ca te'bhūt susūkṣmaḥ api manyuḥ manasi pārthiva | sabhāryasya naraśreṣṭha tena te prītimān aham ॥13-55-20॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तेऽभूत् (te'bhūt) - to you (te) was (abhūt); सुसूक्ष्मः (susūkṣmaḥ) - very subtle; अपि (api) - even; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; मनसि (manasi) - in (your) mind; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; सभार्यस्य (sabhāryasya) - with (your) wife; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; तेन (tena) - by that; ते (te) - your; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - pleased; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(And not to you was even a very subtle anger in (your) mind, O king. With (your) wife, O best of men, by that, your, pleased am I.)
O king, not even the subtlest anger was present in your mind. O best of men, as you were with your wife, by that, I am pleased with you. (13-55-20)
भोजनं च समानाय्य यत्तदादीपितं मया। क्रुध्येथा यदि मात्सर्यादिति तन्मर्षितं च ते ॥१३-५५-२१॥
bhojanaṃ ca samānāyya yattadādīpitaṃ mayā | krudhyeṭhā yadi mātsaryāditi tanmarṣitaṃ ca te ॥13-55-21॥
[भोजनम् (bhojanam) - food; च (ca) - and; समानाय्य (samānāyya) - having distributed (equally); यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; आदीपितम् (ādīpitam) - incited; मया (mayā) - by me; क्रुध्येथा (krudhyeṭhā) - you became angry; यदि (yadi) - if; मात्सर्यात् (mātsaryāt) - from jealousy; इति (iti) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; मर्षितम् (marṣitam) - forgiven; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - by you;]
(And food, having distributed equally, which that was instigated by me, you became angry; if from jealousy thus, that was forgiven by you;)
And as for the food—having equally distributed it—which I had incited, if you became angry out of jealousy for that, it was forgiven by you. (13-55-21)
ततोऽहं रथमारुह्य त्वामवोचं नराधिप। सभार्यो मां वहस्वेति तच्च त्वं कृतवांस्तथा ॥१३-५५-२२॥
tato'haṃ ratham āruhya tvām avocaṃ narādhipa। sa-bhāryaḥ mām vahasva iti tac ca tvaṃ kṛtavāṃs tathā ॥13-55-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आरुह्य (āruhya) - having mounted; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अवोचम् (avocam) - said; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O ruler of men; सभार्यः (sa-bhāryaḥ) - with the wife; माम् (mām) - me; वह (vaha) - carry; स्व (sva) - yourself; इति (iti) - thus; तत् (tac) - that; च (ca) - and; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - did (performed/have done); तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Then I having mounted the chariot, said to you, O ruler of men: "Carry me with (my) wife," thus. And that you did thus.)
Then, having mounted the chariot, I said to you, O ruler of men: "Carry me together with my wife." And you did just that. (13-55-22)
अविशङ्को नरपते प्रीतोऽहं चापि तेन ते। धनोत्सर्गेऽपि च कृते न त्वां क्रोधः प्रधर्षयत् ॥१३-५५-२३॥
aviśaṅko narapate prīto'haṃ cāpi tena te. dhanotsarge'pi ca kṛte na tvāṃ krodhaḥ pradharṣayat ॥13-55-23॥
[अविशङ्कः (aviśaṅkaḥ) - without suspicion; नरपते (narapate) - O king; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अहम् (aham) - I; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by him; ते (te) - your; धनोत्सर्गे (dhana-utsarge) - in the relinquishment of wealth; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; कृते (kṛte) - having been done; न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; प्रधर्षयत् (pradharṣayat) - overcame;]
(Without suspicion, O king, pleased am I and indeed by him, your (person); even in the relinquishment of wealth having been done, anger did not overcome you.)
O king, I am without suspicion and well pleased with you, and indeed, even when your wealth was surrendered, anger did not overcome you. (13-55-23)
ततः प्रीतेन ते राजन्पुनरेतत्कृतं तव। सभार्यस्य वनं भूयस्तद्विद्धि मनुजाधिप ॥१३-५५-२४॥
tataḥ prītena te rājan punaretat kṛtaṃ tava. sabhāryasya vanaṃ bhūyas tad viddhi manujādhipa ॥13-55-24॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that point; प्रीतेन (prītena) - by the pleased (one); with affection; ते (te) - to you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुनः (punar) - again; एतत् (etat) - this; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - has been done; तव (tava) - for you; सभार्यस्य (sabhāryasya) - with (your) wife; वनं (vanaṃ) - forest; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; तत् (tat) - that; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - O lord of men;]
(Then by the pleased (one) to you, O king, again this has been done for you. With your wife, the forest again, that know, O lord of men.)
Then, O king, this has again been done for you by the pleased one; know that, O lord of men, you (are to go) with your wife to the forest again. (13-55-24)
प्रीत्यर्थं तव चैतन्मे स्वर्गसंदर्शनं कृतम्। यत्ते वनेऽस्मिन्नृपते दृष्टं दिव्यं निदर्शनम् ॥१३-५५-२५॥
prītyarthaṃ tava caitanme svargasaṃdarśanaṃ kṛtam। yatte vane'sminnṛpate dṛṣṭaṃ divyaṃ nidarśanam ॥13-55-25॥
[प्रीत्यर्थं (prītyartham) - for the sake of affection; तव (tava) - of you; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; मे (me) - by me; स्वर्गसंदर्शनं (svargasaṃdarśanam) - showing of heaven; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done; यत् (yat) - that which; ते (te) - to you; वनेऽस्मिन् (vane'smin) - in this forest; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - was seen; दिव्यं (divyam) - divine; निदर्शनम् (nidarśanam) - manifestation;]
(For the sake of affection and of you, O king, this showing of heaven was done by me. That which divine manifestation was seen by you in this forest.)
O king, this vision of heaven was shown by me for your pleasure and for your sake. That divine manifestation which you saw in this forest (13-55-25).
स्वर्गोद्देशस्त्वया राजन्सशरीरेण पार्थिव। मुहूर्तमनुभूतोऽसौ सभार्येण नृपोत्तम ॥१३-५५-२६॥
svargoddeśastvayā rājansaśarīreṇa pārthiva। muhūrtamanubhūto'sau sabhāryeṇa nṛpottama ॥13-55-26॥
[स्वर्गोद्देशः (svargoddeśaḥ) - going to heaven; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सशरीरेण (saśarīreṇa) - with the body; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - king; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; अनुभूतः (anubhūtaḥ) - experienced; असौ (asau) - he; सभार्येण (sabhāryeṇa) - with wife; नृपोतम (nṛpottama) - O best of kings;]
(Going to heaven by you, O king, with the body, O king, for a moment experienced he, with wife, O best of kings.)
O best of kings, by you, the king, going to heaven with (your) body together with (your) wife was experienced for a moment. (13-55-26)
निदर्शनार्थं तपसो धर्मस्य च नराधिप। तत्र यासीत्स्पृहा राजंस्तच्चापि विदितं मम ॥१३-५५-२७॥
nidarśanārthaṁ tapaso dharmasya ca narādhipa. tatra yāsītspr̥hā rājan taccāpi viditaṁ mama ॥13-55-27॥
[निदर्शनार्थं (nidarśanārtham) - for the sake of example; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; च (ca) - and; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; तत्र (tatra) - there; या (yā) - which; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; स्पृहा (spr̥hā) - desire; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - also; अपि (api) - even; विदितं (viditam) - known; मम (mama) - to me;]
(For the sake of example of austerity and of dharma, O king, there, which desire was, O king, that also is known to me.)
O king, for the sake of exemplifying austerity and dharma, whatever desire existed there, that too is known to me. (13-55-27)
ब्राह्मण्यं काङ्क्षसे हि त्वं तपश्च पृथिवीपते। अवमन्य नरेन्द्रत्वं देवेन्द्रत्वं च पार्थिव ॥१३-५५-२८॥
brāhmaṇyaṃ kāṅkṣase hi tvaṃ tapaś ca pṛthivīpate। avamanya narendratvaṃ devendratvaṃ ca pārthiva ॥13-55-28॥
[ब्राह्मण्यं (brāhmaṇyam) - Brahminhood; the state of being a Brāhmaṇa; काङ्क्षसे (kāṅkṣase) - you desire; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; penance; च (ca) - and; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth; अवमन्य (avamanya) - disregarding; नरेन्द्रत्वं (narendratvam) - the position of king; देवेन्द्रत्वं (devendratvam) - the position of Indra; च (ca) - and; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Brahminhood you desire indeed, you, austerity and, O lord of the earth; disregarding kingship, Indraship and, O king.)
You truly desire Brahminhood and austerity, O lord of the earth, disregarding kingship and even the Indraship, O king. (13-55-28)
एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वं ब्राह्मण्यं तात दुर्लभम्। ब्राह्मण्ये सति चर्षित्वमृषित्वे च तपस्विता ॥१३-५५-२९॥
evam etad yathāttha tvaṃ brāhmaṇyaṃ tāta durlabham। brāhmaṇye sati carṣitvam ṛṣitve ca tapasvitā ॥13-55-29॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; अत्थ (attha) - you have said; त्वम् (tvam) - you; ब्राह्मण्यं (brāhmaṇyam) - brahminhood; तात (tāta) - dear one; दुर्लभम् (durlabham) - difficult to attain; ब्राह्मण्ये (brāhmaṇye) - in brahminhood; सति (sati) - when present; च (ca) - and; र्षित्वम् (ṛṣitvam) - the state of a seer; ऋषित्वे (ṛṣitve) - in the state of a seer; च (ca) - and; तपस्विता (tapasvitā) - asceticism;]
(Thus, this is as you have said, you—brahminhood, dear one, is difficult to attain. In brahminhood being present, and seerhood, in the state of a seer, and asceticism.)
Yes, it is just as you have said, dear one; brahminhood is difficult to attain. When brahminhood is present, then follow the qualities of a seer and asceticism. (13-55-29)
भविष्यत्येष ते कामः कुशिकात्कौशिको द्विजः। तृतीयं पुरुषं प्राप्य ब्राह्मणत्वं गमिष्यति ॥१३-५५-३०॥
bhaviṣyatyeṣa te kāmaḥ kuśikātkauśiko dvijaḥ। tṛtīyaṃ puruṣaṃ prāpya brāhmaṇatvaṃ gamiṣyati॥13-55-30॥
[भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; एष (eṣa) - this; ते (te) - your; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; कुशिकात् (kuśikāt) - from Kuśika; कौशिकः (kauśikaḥ) - descendant of Kuśika; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - twice-born; तृतीयं (tṛtīyam) - third; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - person; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; ब्राह्मणत्वं (brāhmaṇatvam) - Brahminhood; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will attain;]
(This your desire will become; from Kuśika, the descendant of Kuśika, the twice-born, having attained the third person, will attain Brahminhood.)
This wish of yours will be fulfilled; the twice-born descendant of Kuśika, attaining the third generation, will achieve Brahminhood. (13-55-30)
वंशस्ते पार्थिवश्रेष्ठ भृगूणामेव तेजसा। पौत्रस्ते भविता विप्र तपस्वी पावकद्युतिः ॥१३-५५-३१॥
vaṃśas te pārthiva-śreṣṭha bhṛgūṇām eva tejasā। pautras te bhavitā vipra tapasvī pāvaka-dyutiḥ ॥13-55-31॥
[वंशः (vaṃśaḥ) - lineage; ते (te) - of you; पार्थिवश्रेष्ठ (pārthiva-śreṣṭha) - O best of kings; भृगूणाम् (bhṛgūṇām) - of the Bhṛgus; एव (eva) - indeed; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the splendor; पौत्रः (pautraḥ) - grandson; ते (te) - your; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; तपस्वी (tapasvī) - ascetic; पावकद्युतिः (pāvaka-dyutiḥ) - having the radiance of fire;]
(Lineage your, O best of kings, indeed by the splendor of the Bhṛgus. Your grandson will be a brāhmaṇa, ascetic, having the radiance of fire.)
O best of kings, your lineage will be enhanced by the splendor of the Bhṛgus. Your grandson will be a brāhmaṇa, an ascetic, possessing the radiance of fire. (13-55-31)
यः स देवमनुष्याणां भयमुत्पादयिष्यति। त्रयाणां चैव लोकानां सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥१३-५५-३२॥
yaḥ sa devamanuṣyāṇāṃ bhayam utpādayiṣyati. trayāṇāṃ caiva lokānāṃ satyam etad bravīmi te ॥13-55-32॥
[यः (yaḥ) - he who; स (sa) - that; देवमनुष्याणां (devamanuṣyāṇām) - of gods and men; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; उत्पादयिष्यति (utpādayiṣyati) - will produce; त्रयाणां (trayāṇām) - of the three; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; लोकानां (lokānām) - of worlds; सत्यं (satyam) - truth; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; ते (te) - to you;]
(He who that of gods and men fear will produce, of the three and indeed of worlds, truth this I speak to you.)
He who will cause fear among gods and humans, and indeed among all three worlds—this is truth, I declare this to you. (13-55-32)
वरं गृहाण राजर्षे यस्ते मनसि वर्तते। तीर्थयात्रां गमिष्यामि पुरा कालोऽतिवर्तते ॥१३-५५-३३॥
varaṃ gṛhāṇa rājarṣe yaste manasi vartate। tīrthayātrāṃ gamiṣyāmi purā kālo'tivartate ॥13-55-33॥

(Take a boon, O royal sage, which for you in (your) mind exists. Pilgrimage I shall go (on) soon, time is passing over.)

(This indeed boon to me today, that you are pleased, O great sage. Let this be as you have spoken, austerity in the grandson of mine, O sinless one. Brahminhood to me, of the family, let there be, O revered one; this is to me the boon.)
This is, indeed, my boon today—that you are pleased, O great sage. Let what you have said be fulfilled: let austerity be present in my grandson, O sinless one. Let Brahminhood exist for my family, O revered one; this is my boon. (13-55-34)
पुनश्चाख्यातुमिच्छामि भगवन्विस्तरेण वै। कथमेष्यति विप्रत्वं कुलं मे भृगुनन्दन ॥ कश्चासौ भविता बन्धुर्मम कश्चापि संमतः ॥१३-५५-३५॥
punaś cākhātuṁ icchāmi bhagavan vistareṇa vai। katham eṣyati vipratvaṁ kulaṁ me bhṛgunandana ॥ kaś ca asau bhavitā bandhur mama kaḥ ca api saṁmataḥ ॥13-55-35॥

(Again and to tell I wish, O lord, in detail indeed; how will attain brāhmaṇa-hood my family, O descendant of Bhṛgu? Who and he will be relative of me, who and also approved? (13-55-35))
O lord, I wish to be told again, in detail indeed: how will my family attain brāhmaṇa-hood, O descendant of Bhṛgu? Who will be that relative of mine, who also will be regarded as approved? (13-55-35)
