यानीमानि बहिर्वेद्यां दानानि परिचक्षते। तेभ्यो विशिष्टं किं दानं मतं ते कुरुपुङ्गव ॥१३-५८-१॥
yānīmāni bahirvedyāṃ dānāni paricakṣate। tebhyo viśiṣṭaṃ kiṃ dānaṃ mataṃ te kurupuṅgava॥13-58-1॥
[यानि (yāni) - which; (those) that; इमानि (imāni) - these; बहिर्वेद्यां (bahirvedyām) - outside the altar; दानानि (dānāni) - gifts; offerings; परिचक्षते (paricakṣate) - they declare; they explain; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from those; beyond those; विशिष्टं (viśiṣṭam) - distinct; superior; किं (kiṃ) - what; दानं (dānam) - gift; offering; मतं (mataṃ) - considered; thought; ते (te) - by you; कुरुपुङ्गव (kurupuṅgava) - O best of Kurus;]
(Which these gifts outside the altar they declare; from those, what distinct gift considered by you, O best of Kurus? (13-58-1))
O best of Kurus, which are these gifts given outside the altar that they declare? Among them, which gift do you consider as superior? (13-58-1)
कौतूहलं हि परमं तत्र मे वर्तते प्रभो। दातारं दत्तमन्वेति यद्दानं तत्प्रचक्ष्व मे ॥१३-५८-२॥
kautūhalaṁ hi paramaṁ tatra me vartate prabho। dātāraṁ dattam anv eti yat dānaṁ tat pracakṣva me ॥13-58-2॥
[कौतूहलं (kautūhalam) - curiosity; हि (hi) - indeed; परमं (paramam) - supreme; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - to me; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; दातारं (dātāram) - the giver; दत्तम् (dattam) - the gift; अनु (anu) - after; एति (eti) - goes; यत् (yat) - which; दानं (dānam) - gift; तत् (tat) - that; प्रचक्ष्व (pracakṣva) - explain; मे (me) - to me;]
(Curiosity indeed supreme there to me exists O lord. The giver, the gift after goes which gift, that explain to me.)
O lord, I indeed have supreme curiosity there. Please explain to me that gift by which the gift follows the giver. (13-58-2)

अभयं सर्वभूतेभ्यो व्यसने चाप्यनुग्रहम्। यच्चाभिलषितं दद्यात्तृषितायाभियाचते ॥१३-५८-३॥
abhayaṃ sarvabhūtebhyo vyasane cāpyanugraham। yaccābhilaṣitaṃ dadyāt tṛṣitāyābhiyācate ॥13-58-3॥
[अभयं (abhayam) - fearlessness; सर्वभूतेभ्यो (sarvabhūtebhyo) - to all beings; व्यासने (vyasane) - in adversity; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनुग्रहम् (anugraham) - favor; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; अभिलषितम् (abhilaṣitam) - desired; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - he should give; तृषिताय (tṛṣitāya) - to the thirsty; अभियाचते (abhiyācate) - who approaches or requests;]
(Fearlessness to all beings, and in adversity also favor; and whatever desired (thing), he should give to the thirsty who requests.)
He should grant fearlessness to all beings, offer favor even in adversity, and give whatever is desired to the thirsty one who asks. (13-58-3)
दत्तं मन्येत यद्दत्त्वा तद्दानं श्रेष्ठमुच्यते। दत्तं दातारमन्वेति यद्दानं भरतर्षभ ॥१३-५८-४॥
dattaṃ manyeta yaddattvā taddānaṃ śreṣṭhamucyate। dattaṃ dātāramanveti yaddānaṃ bharatarṣabha ॥13-58-4॥
[दत्तं (dattaṃ) - given;, मन्येत (manyeta) - he should think;, यत् (yat) - which;, दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given;, तत् (tat) - that;, दानं (dānaṃ) - gift;, श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - the best;, उच्यते (ucyate) - is said;, दत्तं (dattaṃ) - the given;, दाता (dātā) - the giver;, अरम् (aram) - unto;, अन्वेति (anveti) - follows;, यत् (yat) - which;, दानं (dānaṃ) - gift;, भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Given, he should think, which having given, that gift, the best, is said. The given follows the giver, which gift, O best of the Bharatas.)
That is said to be the best gift, O best of the Bharatas, which, having given, one feels it was given; such a gift follows the giver. (13-58-4)
हिरण्यदानं गोदानं पृथिवीदानमेव च। एतानि वै पवित्राणि तारयन्त्यपि दुष्कृतम् ॥१३-५८-५॥
hiraṇyadānaṃ godānaṃ pṛthivīdānameva ca। etāni vai pavitrāṇi tārayantyapi duṣkṛtam॥13-58-5॥
[हिरण्यदानं (hiraṇyadānam) - gift of gold; गोदानं (godānam) - gift of cows; पृथिवीदानम् (pṛthivīdānam) - gift of earth; [एव] ([eva]) - indeed; च (ca) - and; एतानि (etāni) - these; वै (vai) - verily; पवित्राणि (pavitrāṇi) - purifiers; तारयन्ति (tārayanti) - cause to cross over; अपि (api) - even; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - evil deed;]
(Gift of gold, gift of cows, gift of earth indeed and—these verily purifiers cause even evil deed to cross over.)
The gifts of gold, cows, and even of earth—these purify and liberate one even from evil deeds. (13-58-5)
एतानि पुरुषव्याघ्र साधुभ्यो देहि नित्यदा। दानानि हि नरं पापान्मोक्षयन्ति न संशयः ॥१३-५८-६॥
etāni puruṣavyāghra sādhubhyo dehi nityadā। dānāni hi naraṃ pāpān mokṣayanti na saṃśayaḥ ॥13-58-6॥
[एतानि (etāni) - these; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - O tiger among men; साधुभ्यः (sādhubhyaḥ) - to the virtuous ones; देहि (dehi) - give; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always; दानानि (dānāni) - gifts; हि (hi) - indeed; नरम् (naram) - a person; पापात् (pāpāt) - from sin; मोक्षयन्ति (mokṣayanti) - they liberate; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(These, O tiger among men, to the virtuous ones give always. Gifts indeed a person from sin they liberate; not (is there) doubt.)
O tiger among men, always give these gifts to the virtuous. Indeed, gifts free a person from sin; there is no doubt about this. (13-58-6)
यद्यदिष्टतमं लोके यच्चास्य दयितं गृहे। तत्तद्गुणवते देयं तदेवाक्षयमिच्छता ॥१३-५८-७॥
yady adiṣṭatamaṁ loke yac cāsya dayitaṁ gṛhe. tattad guṇavate deyaṁ tadevā kṣayam icchatā ॥13-58-7॥
[यद्यत् (yadyat) - whatever; इष्टतमम् (iṣṭatamam) - most beloved; लोके (loke) - in the world; यत् च (yat ca) - and whatever; अस्य (asya) - of him (one); दयितम् (dayitam) - dear; गृहे (gṛhe) - in (his) house; तत्तत् (tattat) - those very things; गुणवते (guṇavate) - to a worthy person; देयम् (deyam) - should be given; तदेव (tadeva) - that alone; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable (undiminishing); इच्छता (icchatā) - by one who desires;]
(Whatever is most beloved in the world, and whatever is dear of him in his house, those very things should be given to a worthy person by one who desires the imperishable; that alone (gift) is imperishable.)
Whatever one treasures most in the world and whatever is most dear to him at home, such things should be given to a worthy person by one wishing for the imperishable; only that gift is undiminishing. (13-58-7)
प्रियाणि लभते लोके प्रियदः प्रियकृत्तथा। प्रियो भवति भूतानामिह चैव परत्र च ॥१३-५८-८॥
priyāṇi labhate loke priyadaḥ priyakṛttathā। priyo bhavati bhūtānāmiha caiva paratra ca ॥13-58-8॥
[प्रियाणि (priyāṇi) - dear things; लभते (labhate) - obtains; लोके (loke) - in the world; प्रियदः (priyadaḥ) - one who gives affection; प्रियकृत् (priyakṛt) - one who does what is pleasing; तथा (tathā) - likewise; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - among beings; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; परत्र (paratra) - in the hereafter; च (ca) - and;]
(Dear things obtains in the world one who gives affection, one who does what is pleasing likewise; dear becomes among beings here and indeed in the hereafter and.)
One who gives affection and does what is pleasing obtains dear things in this world; he becomes dear to beings both here and hereafter. (13-58-8)
याचमानमभीमानादाशावन्तमकिञ्चनम्। यो नार्चति यथाशक्ति स नृशंसो युधिष्ठिर ॥१३-५८-९॥
yācamānam abhīmānād āśāvantam akiñcanam। yaḥ na arcati yathāśakti sa nṛśaṁso yudhiṣṭhira ॥13-58-9॥
[याचमानम् (yācamānam) - one begging; अभीमानात् (abhīmānāt) - out of pride; आशावन्तम् (āśāvantam) - having hope; अकिञ्चनम् (akiñcanam) - one who has nothing; यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - does not; अर्चति (arcati) - honors; यथाशक्ति (yathāśakti) - according to (one's) ability; सः (sa) - he; नृशंसः (nṛśaṁsaḥ) - cruel; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(One begging, out of pride, having hope, possessing nothing, who does not honor according to (his) ability, he is cruel, O Yudhiṣṭhira.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, whoever, out of pride, does not honor to the best of his ability one who is begging, who is full of hope, and who possesses nothing—he is cruel. (13-58-9)
अमित्रमपि चेद्दीनं शरणैषिणमागतम्। व्यसने योऽनुगृह्णाति स वै पुरुषसत्तमः ॥१३-५८-१०॥
amitra-m api ced dīnaṃ śaraṇa-iṣiṇam āgatam। vyasane yo' anugṛhṇāti sa vai puruṣa-sattamaḥ॥13-58-10॥
[अमित्रम् (amitraṃ) - enemy; अपि (api) - even; चेत् (cet) - if; दीनं (dīnaṃ) - afflicted; शरणैषिणम् (śaraṇa-iṣiṇam) - seeking refuge; आगतम् (āgatam) - has come; व्यसने (vyasane) - in distress; यः (yaḥ) - who; अनुगृह्णाति (anugṛhṇāti) - shows favor; स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; पुरुषसत्तमः (puruṣa-sattamaḥ) - the best of men;]
(Even enemy if afflicted seeking refuge has come, in distress who shows favor, he indeed the best of men.)
He who shows favor to even an enemy who, afflicted, comes seeking refuge in distress, he indeed is the best of men. (13-58-10)
कृशाय ह्रीमते तात वृत्तिक्षीणाय सीदते। अपहन्यात्क्षुधं यस्तु न तेन पुरुषः समः ॥१३-५८-११॥
kṛśāya hrīmate tāta vṛttikṣīṇāya sīdate| apahanyāt kṣudhaṃ yas tu na tena puruṣaḥ samaḥ ॥13-58-11॥
[कृशाय (kṛśāya) - to the emaciated one; ह्रीमते (hrīmate) - to the modest one; तात (tāta) - O dear one; वृत्तिक्षीणाय (vṛttikṣīṇāya) - to him whose livelihood is exhausted; सीदते (sīdate) - to the one who is sinking; अपहन्यात् (apahanyāt) - if one should remove; क्षुधम् (kṣudham) - hunger; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; तेन (tena) - by him; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a man; समः (samaḥ) - equal;]
(To the emaciated one, to the modest one, O dear one, to him whose livelihood is exhausted, to the one who is sinking—if someone should remove hunger, who but him, not by him is a man equal.)
O dear one, one who removes the hunger of an emaciated, modest person whose livelihood is exhausted and who is sinking—there is no man equal to him. (13-58-11)
ह्रिया तु नियतान्साधून्पुत्रदारैश्च कर्शितान्। अयाचमानान्कौन्तेय सर्वोपायैर्निमन्त्रय ॥१३-५८-१२॥
hriyā tu niyatānsādhūnputradāraiś ca karśitān | ayācamānān kaunteya sarvopāyair nimantraya ॥13-58-12॥
[ह्रिया (hriyā) - with modesty; तु (tu) - but; नियतान् (niyatān) - self-controlled; साधून् (sādhūn) - virtuous ones; पुत्रदारैः (putradāraiḥ) - by sons and wives; च (ca) - and; कर्शितान् (karśitān) - afflicted; अयाचमानान् (ayācamānān) - not begging; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; सर्वोपायैः (sarvopāyaiḥ) - by all means; निमन्त्रय (nimantraya) - invite;]
(But with modesty, the self-controlled, virtuous ones, afflicted with sons and wives, not begging, O son of Kunti, by all means, invite.)
O son of Kunti, invite, by all means, those virtuous and self-controlled people, who are afflicted with their sons and wives, who do not beg, but with modesty. (13-58-12)
आशिषं ये न देवेषु न मर्त्येषु च कुर्वते। अर्हन्तो नित्यसत्त्वस्था यथालब्धोपजीविनः ॥१३-५८-१३॥
āśiṣaṃ ye na deveṣu na martyeṣu ca kurvate। arhanto nityasattvasthā yathālabdhopajīvinaḥ ॥13-58-13॥
[आशिषम् (āśiṣam) - benediction; ये (ye) - who; न (na) - not; देवेषु (deveṣu) - in the gods; न (na) - not; मर्त्येषु (martyeṣu) - in mortals; च (ca) - and; कुर्वते (kurvate) - perform; अर्हन्तः (arhantaḥ) - worthy ones; नित्यसत्त्वस्थाः (nityasattvasthāḥ) - steadfast in eternal essence; यथालब्धोपजीविनः (yathālabdhopajīvinaḥ) - subsisting as obtained;]
(Benediction who not in the gods not in mortals and perform, worthy ones steadfast in eternal essence subsisting as obtained.)
Those who do not offer benedictions either to gods or mortals, who are worthy, steadfast in eternal essence, and subsist upon what is obtained as it comes. (13-58-13)
आशीविषसमेभ्यश्च तेभ्यो रक्षस्व भारत। तान्युक्तैरुपजिज्ञास्य तथा द्विजवरोत्तमान् ॥१३-५८-१४॥
āśīviṣasamebhyaś ca tebhyo rakṣasva bhārata. tān yuktair upajijñāsya tathā dvijavarottamān ॥13-58-14॥
[आशीविषसमेभ्यः (āśīviṣasamebhyaḥ) - from those who are like poisonous serpents; च (ca) - and; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from them; रक्षस्व (rakṣasva) - protect (yourself); भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तान् (tān) - those; युक्तैः (yuktaiḥ) - by the skilled ones; उपजिज्ञास्य (upajijñāsya) - you should investigate; तथा (tathā) - likewise; द्विजवरोत्तमान् (dvijavarottamān) - the best among excellent brāhmaṇas;]
(And from those who are like poisonous serpents, from them protect (yourself), O Bhārata. Those you should investigate by the skilled ones, likewise the best among excellent brāhmaṇas.)
O Bhārata, protect yourself from those who are like poisonous serpents. Have the skilled ones investigate them, as well as the foremost among the excellent brāhmaṇas. (13-58-14)
कृतैरावसथैर्नित्यं सप्रेष्यैः सपरिच्छदैः। निमन्त्रयेथाः कौरव्य सर्वकामसुखावहैः ॥१३-५८-१५॥
kṛtair āvasathair nityaṃ sapreṣyaiḥ saparicchadaiḥ। nimantrayeythāḥ kauravya sarvakāmasukhāvahaiḥ॥13-58-15॥
[कृतैः (kṛtaiḥ) - prepared; accomplished; made; by; आवसथैः (āvasathaiḥ) - by dwellings; abodes; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; सप्रेष्यैः (sapreṣyaiḥ) - with attendants; with servants; सपरिच्छदैः (saparicchadaiḥ) - with paraphernalia; with equipment; निमन्त्रयेथाः (nimantrayeythāḥ) - you should invite; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; Kaurava; सर्वकामसुखावहैः (sarvakāmasukhāvahaiḥ) - bringing all-desired happiness; conferring all desired pleasures;]
(By dwellings prepared, always, with attendants, with paraphernalia, you should invite, O Kaurava, bringing all-desired happiness.)
O Kaurava, you should always invite (them) with well-prepared dwellings, attendants, and equipment, all of which confer every kind of happiness. (13-58-15)
यदि ते प्रतिगृह्णीयुः श्रद्धापूतं युधिष्ठिर। कार्यमित्येव मन्वाना धार्मिकाः पुण्यकर्मिणः ॥१३-५८-१६॥
yadi te pratigṛhṇīyuḥ śraddhāpūtaṃ yudhiṣṭhira. kāryamityeva manvānā dhārmikāḥ puṇyakarmiṇaḥ ॥13-58-16॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - they; प्रतिगृह्णीयुः (pratigṛhṇīyuḥ) - might accept; श्रद्धापूतं (śraddhāpūtaṃ) - purified by faith; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhishthira; कार्यम् (kāryam) - to be done; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; मन्वानाः (manvānāḥ) - thinking; धार्मिकाः (dhārmikāḥ) - the righteous; पुण्यकर्मिणः (puṇyakarmiṇaḥ) - those of meritorious deeds;]
(If they might accept purified-by-faith, O Yudhishthira, thinking indeed thus 'to be done', the righteous, those of meritorious deeds.)
If the righteous and those of meritorious deeds, O Yudhishthira, might accept what is purified by faith, thinking indeed that it should be done. (13-58-16)
विद्यास्नाता व्रतस्नाता ये व्यपाश्रित्यजीविनः। गूढस्वाध्यायतपसो ब्राह्मणाः संशितव्रताः ॥१३-५८-१७॥
vidyā-snātā vrata-snātā ye vyapāśritya-jīvinaḥ। gūḍha-svādhyāya-tapaso brāhmaṇāḥ saṁśita-vratāḥ ॥13-58-17॥
[विद्यास्नाता (vidyā-snātā) - having bathed in knowledge; व्रतस्नाता (vrata-snātā) - having bathed in vows; ये (ye) - who; व्यपाश्रित्यजीविनः (vyapāśritya-jīvinaḥ) - living by support (of others); गूढस्वाध्यायतपसो (gūḍha-svādhyāya-tapaso) - of secret study and austerity; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; संशितव्रताः (saṁśita-vratāḥ) - firm in vow;]
(Having bathed in knowledge, having bathed in vows, who live supported (by others), whose study and austerity are hidden, brāhmaṇas firm in vow.)
Brāhmaṇas who are purified by knowledge and by vows, who subsist on support from others, whose self-study and austerity are concealed, and who are firm in their vows. (13-58-17)
तेषु शुद्धेषु दान्तेषु स्वदारनिरतेषु च। यत्करिष्यसि कल्याणं तत्त्वा लोकेषु धास्यति ॥१३-५८-१८॥
teṣu śuddheṣu dānteṣu svadāranirateṣu ca। yat kariṣyasi kalyāṇaṃ tattvā lokeṣu dhāsyati॥13-58-18॥
[तेषु (teṣu) - in those; शुद्धेषु (śuddheṣu) - pure; दान्तेषु (dānteṣu) - self-controlled; स्वदारनिरतेषु (svadāranirateṣu) - devoted to their own wives; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - you will do; कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - good; तत् (tat) - that; त्वा (tvā) - by you; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; धास्यति (dhāsyati) - will hold;]
(In those pure, self-controlled, devoted to their own wives, and, which you will do good, that by you in the worlds will hold.)
Among those who are pure, self-controlled, and devoted to their own wives, whatever good you perform, that will spread your reputation throughout the worlds. (13-58-18)
यथाग्निहोत्रं सुहुतं सायं प्रातर्द्विजातिना। तथा भवति दत्तं वै द्विजेभ्योऽथ कृतात्मना ॥१३-५८-१९॥
yathāgnihotraṃ suhutaṃ sāyaṃ prātar dvijātinā। tathā bhavati dattaṃ vai dvijebhyo'tha kṛtātmanā ॥13-58-19॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; अग्निहोत्रं (agnihotraṃ) - agnihotra (fire sacrifice); सुहुतं (suhutaṃ) - well offered; सायं (sāyaṃ) - in the evening; प्रातर् (prātar) - in the morning; द्विजातिना (dvijātinā) - by a twice-born; तथा (tathā) - so; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; दत्तं (dattaṃ) - given; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विजेभ्यः (dvijebhyaḥ) - to the twice-born; अथ (atha) - then; कृतात्मना (kṛtātmanā) - by one whose self is purified;]
(Just as agnihotra well offered in the evening and morning by a twice-born, so indeed becomes the gift given to the twice-born, then by one whose self is purified.)
Just as the Agnihotra sacrifice that is properly offered by a twice-born in the evening and morning, so too is a gift made to the twice-born by one whose self is purified. (13-58-19)
एष ते विततो यज्ञः श्रद्धापूतः सदक्षिणः। विशिष्टः सर्वयज्ञेभ्यो ददतस्तात वर्तताम् ॥१३-५८-२०॥
eṣa te vitato yajñaḥ śraddhā-pūtaḥ sadakṣiṇaḥ। viśiṣṭaḥ sarva-yajñebhyo dadatas tāta vartatām ॥13-58-20॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; ते (te) - to you; विततः (vitataḥ) - offered; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; श्रद्धा-पूतः (śraddhā-pūtaḥ) - purified by faith; स-दक्षिणः (sadakṣiṇaḥ) - with gifts; विशिष्टः (viśiṣṭaḥ) - distinguished; सर्व-यज्ञेभ्यः (sarva-yajñebhyaḥ) - from all sacrifices; ददतः (dadatas) - of the giver; तात (tāta) - O dear; वर्तताम् (vartatām) - may it be;]
(This to you offered sacrifice purified by faith with gifts distinguished from all sacrifices of the giver O dear may it be.)
May this sacrifice, offered to you, purified by faith and accompanied by gifts, O dear, be distinguished above all other sacrifices of the giver. (13-58-20)
निवापो दानसदृशस्तादृशेषु युधिष्ठिर। निवपन्पूजयंश्चैव तेष्वानृण्यं निगच्छति ॥१३-५८-२१॥
nivāpo dānasadṛśastādṛśeṣu yudhiṣṭhira। nivapanpūjayaṃścaiva teṣvānṛṇyaṃ nigacchati ॥13-58-21॥
[निवापः (nivāpaḥ) - offering of food (to beings); दानसदृशः (dānasadṛśaḥ) - equal to giving; तादृशेषु (tādṛśeṣu) - to such (beings); युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhishthira; निवपन् (nivapan) - offering; पूजयन् (pūjayan) - honoring; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तेषु (teṣu) - to them; अनृण्यम् (anṛṇyam) - freedom from debt; निगच्छति (nigacchati) - attains;]
(The offering of food is equal to a gift to such beings, O Yudhishthira; offering and indeed honoring them, one attains freedom from debt.)
O Yudhishthira, offering food to such beings is equal to giving a gift; by making offerings and honoring them, one indeed attains freedom from debt. (13-58-21)
य एव नो न कुप्यन्ति न लुभ्यन्ति तृणेष्वपि। त एव नः पूज्यतमा ये चान्ये प्रियवादिनः ॥१३-५८-२२॥
ya eva no na kupyanti na lubhyanti tṛṇeṣv api। ta eva naḥ pūjyatamā ye ca anye priyavādinaḥ॥13-58-22॥
[य (ya) - who; एव (eva) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - to us; न (na) - not; कुप्यन्ति (kupyanti) - become angry; न (na) - not; लुभ्यन्ति (lubhyanti) - become greedy; तृणेषु (tṛṇeṣu) - in even grasses; अपि (api) - even; ते (te) - they; एव (eva) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - our; पूज्यतमाः (pūjyatamāḥ) - most worthy of honor; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; प्रियवादिनः (priyavādinaḥ) - speakers of pleasant words;]
(Who indeed to us do not become angry, do not become greedy even about grasses, they indeed are to us the most worthy of honor, and those others who are speakers of pleasant words.)
Those who do not get angry at us and do not become greedy even for trivial things like grass, they alone are most worthy of our honor, not merely those others who speak pleasant words. (13-58-22)
ये नो न बहु मन्यन्ते न प्रवर्तन्ति चापरे। पुत्रवत्परिपाल्यास्ते नमस्तेभ्यस्तथाभयम् ॥१३-५८-२३॥
ye no na bahu manyante na pravartanti cāpare. putravat-paripālyās te namas tebhyas tathābhayam ॥13-58-23॥
[ये (ye) - those who; नः (naḥ) - us; न (na) - not; बहु (bahu) - much; मन्त्र्यन्ते (manyante) - consider; न (na) - not; प्रवर्तन्ति (pravartanti) - associate; च (ca) - and; अपरे (apare) - others; पुत्रवत् (putravat) - like sons; परिपाल्याः (paripālyāḥ) - to be protected; ते (te) - they; नमः (namaḥ) - salutation; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - unto them; तथा (tathā) - also; अभयम् (abhayam) - fearlessness;]
(Those who do not consider us much, nor do other persons associate, like sons to be protected they, salutation unto them also fearlessness.)
Those who do not value us highly, nor do other people associate with us, are also to be protected like sons; to them, salutation and safety also. (13-58-23)
ऋत्विक्पुरोहिताचार्या मृदुब्रह्मधरा हि ते। क्षत्रेणापि हि संसृष्टं तेजः शाम्यति वै द्विजे ॥१३-५८-२४॥
ṛtvik-purohita-ācāryā mṛdu-brahma-dharā hi te। kṣatreṇa api hi saṃsṛṣṭaṃ tejaḥ śāmyati vai dvije ॥13-58-24॥
[ऋत्विक्पुरोहिताचार्या (ṛtvik-purohita-ācāryā) - priests, household priests, and preceptors; मृदुब्रह्मधरा (mṛdu-brahma-dharā) - soft (mild) Brahman-bearers; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - they; क्षत्रेणापि (kṣatreṇa api) - even by kṣatriya-power; हि (hi) - indeed; संसृष्टं (saṃsṛṣṭam) - associated; तेजः (tejaḥ) - lustre; शाम्यति (śāmyati) - is subdued; वै (vai) - truly; द्विजे (dvije) - in the twice-born (brāhmaṇa);]
(Priests, household priests, and preceptors, soft Brahman-bearers indeed they; even by kṣatriya power, indeed, the lustre associated is subdued truly in the twice-born.)
Priests, household priests, and teachers, being gentle bearers of Brahman, indeed have their lustre diminished by association with kṣatriya power, truly, in the case of a brāhmaṇa. (13-58-24)
अस्ति मे बलवानस्मि राजास्मीति युधिष्ठिर। ब्राह्मणान्मा स्म पर्यश्नीर्वासोभिरशनेन च ॥१३-५८-२५॥
asti me balavānasmi rājāsmīti yudhiṣṭhira। brāhmaṇān mā sma paryaśnīr vāsobhir aśanena ca ॥13-58-25॥
[अस्ति (asti) - there is; exists; मे (me) - to me; for me; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; powerful; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; राजा (rājā) - king; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; so saying; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brāhmaṇas; मा (mā) - not; स्म (sma) - indeed; ever; पर्यश्नीर् (paryaśnīr) - should you oppress; injure; वासोभिः (vāsobhiḥ) - by clothing; अशनेन (aśanena) - by food; च (ca) - and;]
(There is to me, 'I am strong, I am king'—thus, O Yudhishthira; never should you oppress Brāhmaṇas with clothing, with food, and so on.)
O Yudhishthira, though you may think, 'I am strong, I am king,' never afflict the Brāhmaṇas with (lack of) clothing, food, or the like. (13-58-25)
यच्छोभार्थं बलार्थं वा वित्तमस्ति तवानघ। तेन ते ब्राह्मणाः पूज्याः स्वधर्ममनुतिष्ठता ॥१३-५८-२६॥
yac chobhārthaṃ balārthaṃ vā vittam asti tavānagha। tena te brāhmaṇāḥ pūjyāḥ svadharmam anutiṣṭhatā ॥13-58-26॥
[यत् (yat) - which; शोभा-अर्थम् (śobhā-artham) - for splendour; बल-अर्थम् (bala-artham) - for strength; वा (vā) - or; वित्तम् (vittam) - wealth; अस्ति (asti) - is; तव (tava) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; तेन (tena) - with that; ते (te) - your; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; पूज्याः (pūjyāḥ) - are to be worshipped; स्वधर्मम् (svadharmam) - own dharma; अनुतिष्ठता (anutiṣṭhatā) - by observing;]
(Which for splendour, for strength, or wealth is yours, O sinless one; with that your Brāhmaṇas are to be worshipped, by observing (their) own dharma.)
O sinless one, whatever wealth that is yours for splendour or strength, with that you should worship Brāhmaṇas who observe their own dharma. (13-58-26)
नमस्कार्यास्त्वया विप्रा वर्तमाना यथातथम्। यथासुखं यथोत्साहं ललन्तु त्वयि पुत्रवत् ॥१३-५८-२७॥
namaskāryās tvayā viprā vartamānā yathā tatham। yathā-sukhaṃ yathotsāhaṃ lalantu tvayi putravat॥13-58-27॥
[नमस्कार्याः (namaskāryāḥ) - to be revered; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; वर्तमानाः (vartamānāḥ) - present (ones); यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - so; यथासुखम् (yathā-sukham) - according to comfort; यथोत्साहम् (yathotsāham) - according to enthusiasm; ललन्तु (lalantu) - may they sport; त्वयि (tvayi) - with you; पुत्रवत् (putravat) - like unto a son;]
(To be revered by you, the present Brāhmaṇas, as it is; according to comfort, according to enthusiasm, may they sport with you as with a son.)
The present Brāhmaṇas, who are to be revered by you, should interact with you as they wish, with comfort and enthusiasm, just as with their own son. (13-58-27)
को ह्यन्यः सुप्रसादानां सुहृदामल्पतोषिणाम्। वृत्तिमर्हत्युपक्षेप्तुं त्वदन्यः कुरुसत्तम ॥१३-५८-२८॥
ko hyanyaḥ suprasādānāṃ suhṛdāmalpatoṣiṇām। vṛttimarhatyupakṣeptuṃ tvadanyaḥ kurusattama ॥13-58-28॥
[को (ko) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; सुप्रसादानाम् (suprasādānām) - of those very easily pleased; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; अल्पतोषिणाम् (alpa-toṣiṇām) - of those satisfied with little; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - livelihood; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; उपक्षेप्तुम् (upakṣeptum) - to bestow; त्वत् (tvat) - than you; अतः (anyaḥ) - other; कुरुसत्तम (kurusattama) - O best of Kurus;]
(Who indeed other than you, O best of Kurus, is worthy to bestow livelihood to friends who are very easily pleased, satisfied with little?)
O best of the Kurus, who other than you is truly worthy to provide for friends who are easily pleased and satisfied with little? (13-58-28)
यथा पत्याश्रयो धर्मः स्त्रीणां लोके सनातनः। स देवः सा गतिर्नान्या तथास्माकं द्विजातयः ॥१३-५८-२९॥
yathā patyāśrayo dharmaḥ strīṇāṃ loke sanātanaḥ। sa devaḥ sā gatirnānyā tathāsmākaṃ dvijātayaḥ॥13-58-29॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; पत्याश्रयः (patyāśrayaḥ) - dependence upon husband; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - of women; लोके (loke) - in the world; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; सः (saḥ) - he; देवः (devaḥ) - god; सा (sā) - she; गतिः (gatiḥ) - goal; न अन्याः (na anyā) - no other; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; द्विजातयः (dvijātayaḥ) - those of the twice-born classes;]
(Just as dependence upon husband is the eternal duty of women in the world, he is god, she is the goal, not another; in the same way, for us of the twice-born classes.)
Just as reliance on the husband is the eternal duty of women in the world, with the husband being their god and only goal, so too is it for us of the twice-born classes. (13-58-29)
यदि नो ब्राह्मणास्तात सन्त्यजेयुरपूजिताः। पश्यन्तो दारुणं कर्म सततं क्षत्रिये स्थितम् ॥१३-५८-३०॥
yadi no brāhmaṇās tāta santyajeyur apūjitāḥ. paśyanto dāruṇaṃ karma satataṃ kṣatriye sthitam ॥13-58-30॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; नो (no) - for us; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; तात (tāta) - O dear one; सन्त्यजेयुः (santyajeyuḥ) - would abandon; अपूजिताः (apūjitāḥ) - when not honored; पश्यन्तः (paśyantaḥ) - seeing; दारुणं (dāruṇam) - terrible; कर्म (karma) - action; सततम् (satatam) - constantly; क्षत्रिये (kṣatriye) - in the kṣatriya (class); स्थितम् (sthitam) - existing;]
(If for us the brāhmaṇas, O dear one, would abandon (us), not being honored, seeing the terrible action constantly existing among the kṣatriyas.)
O dear one, if the brāhmaṇas, not being honored by us, were to abandon us, seeing the terrible actions that are always present among kṣatriyas. (13-58-30)
अवेदानामकीर्तीनामलोकानामयज्वनाम्। कोऽस्माकं जीवितेनार्थस्तद्धि नो ब्राह्मणाश्रयम् ॥१३-५८-३१॥
avedānāmakīrtīnāmlokānāmayajvanām। ko'smākaṃ jīvitenārthastaddhi no brāhmaṇāśrayam ॥13-58-31॥
[अवेदानाम् (avedānām) - of those without Veda; अकीर्तीनाम् (akīrtīnām) - of those without fame; अलोकानाम् (alokānām) - of worlds/realms lacking; अयज्वनाम् (ayajvanām) - of those who do not perform sacrifices; कः (kaḥ) - what; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - for us; जीवितेन (jīvitena) - with life; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us; ब्राह्मणाश्रयम् (brāhmaṇāśrayam) - reliance upon the Brāhmaṇas;]
(Of those without Veda, of those without fame, of those without worlds, of those not performing sacrifices—what for us is the purpose with life? That indeed is not reliance upon the Brāhmaṇas for us.)
For us, what is the purpose of life among those who are without the Veda, without fame, who have no worlds, and do not perform sacrifices? Indeed, that is not dependence upon the Brāhmaṇas for us. (13-58-31)
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि यथा धर्मः सनातनः। राजन्यो ब्राह्मणं राजन्पुरा परिचचार ह ॥ वैश्यो राजन्यमित्येव शूद्रो वैश्यमिति श्रुतिः ॥१३-५८-३२॥
atra te vartayiṣyāmi yathā dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ। rājanyo brāhmaṇaṃ rājan purā paricacāra ha ॥ vaiśyo rājanyam ityeva śūdro vaiśyam iti śrutiḥ ॥13-58-32॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; ते (te) - to you; वर्तयिष्यामि (vartayiṣyāmi) - I shall explain; यथा (yathā) - as; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; राजन्यः (rājanyaḥ) - the kṣatriya; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - the brāhmaṇa; राजन् (rājan) - O King; पुरा (purā) - formerly; परिचचार (paricacāra) - did serve; ह (ha) - indeed; वैश्यः (vaiśyaḥ) - the vaiśya; राजन्यम् (rājanyam) - the kṣatriya; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - certainly; शूद्रः (śūdraḥ) - the śūdra; वैश्यं (vaiśyam) - the vaiśya; इति (iti) - thus; श्रुतिः (śrutiḥ) - scripture;]
(Here to you I shall explain as the eternal duty; the kṣatriya, O King, formerly served the brāhmaṇa indeed. The śruti (scripture) declares: the vaiśya (served) the kṣatriya thus certainly, the śūdra (served) the vaiśya thus.)
Here I will explain to you how the eternal duty is: Once, O King, the kṣatriya served the brāhmaṇa. The scripture declares that the vaiśya served the kṣatriya, and the śūdra served the vaiśya. (13-58-32)
दूराच्छूद्रेणोपचर्यो ब्राह्मणोऽग्निरिव ज्वलन्। संस्पर्शपरिचर्यस्तु वैश्येन क्षत्रियेण च ॥१३-५८-३३॥
dūrāc chūdreṇopacaryo brāhmaṇo'gniriva jvalan। saṁsparśaparicaryas tu vaiśyena kṣatriyeṇa ca ॥13-58-33॥
[दूरात् (dūrāt) - from a distance; शूद्रेण (śūdreṇa) - by a Śūdra; उपचर्यः (upacaryaḥ) - to be served; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; इव (iva) - like; ज्वलन् (jvalan) - blazing; संस्पर्शपरिचर्याः (saṁsparśaparicaryāḥ) - by touching and service; तु (tu) - but; वैश्येन (vaiśyena) - by a Vaiśya; क्षत्रियेण (kṣatriyeṇa) - by a Kṣatriya; च (ca) - and;]
(From a distance by a Śūdra to be served the Brāhmaṇa, like blazing fire. By touching and service but by a Vaiśya and a Kṣatriya.)
A Brāhmaṇa, like blazing fire, should be served by a Śūdra from a distance; but by a Vaiśya and a Kṣatriya, he may be served by touching and personal attendance. (13-58-33)
मृदुभावान्सत्यशीलान्सत्यधर्मानुपालकान्। आशीविषानिव क्रुद्धांस्तानुपाचरत द्विजान् ॥१३-५८-३४॥
mṛdubhāvān satyaśīlān satyadharmānupālakān। āśīviṣān iva kruddhāṃs tān upācarata dvijān ॥13-58-34॥
[मृदु-भावान् (mṛdu-bhāvān) - of gentle nature; सत्य-शीलान् (satya-śīlān) - of truthful character; सत्य-धर्म-अनुपालकान् (satya-dharma-anupālakān) - upholding true dharma; आशीविषान्-इव (āśīviṣān-iva) - like venomous serpents; क्रुद्धान् (kruddhān) - angry; तान् (tān) - those; उपाचरत् (upācarat) - served; द्विजान् (dvijān) - the twice-born;]
(Of gentle nature, of truthful character, upholding true dharma, like venomous serpents (when) angry, those (Brahmins) he served.)
He served those twice-born who were gentle by nature, truthful in character, upholders of true dharma, and (yet) when angered were like venomous serpents. (13-58-34)
अपरेषां परेषां च परेभ्यश्चैव ये परे। क्षत्रियाणां प्रतपतां तेजसा च बलेन च ॥ ब्राह्मणेष्वेव शाम्यन्ति तेजांसि च तपांसि च ॥१३-५८-३५॥
apareṣām pareṣāṃ ca parebhyaścaiva ye pare। kṣatriyāṇāṃ pratapatāṃ tejasā ca balena ca॥ brāhmaṇeṣveva śāmyanti tejāṃsi ca tapāṃsi ca॥13-58-35॥
[अपरेषां (apareṣām) - of others; (those who are different from the previous ones); परेषां (pareṣāṃ) - of further; of the supreme; of those others; च (ca) - and; परेभ्यः (parebhyaḥ) - from others; from the supreme; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; truly; ये (ye) - who; परे (pare) - others; further ones; क्षत्रियाणां (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the kṣatriyas; (warrior class); प्रतपतां (pratapatām) - of those who burn; of those who shine; तेजसा (tejasā) - by splendor; by energy; च (ca) - and; बलेन (balena) - by strength; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - in the brāhmaṇas; एव (eva) - indeed; शाम्यन्ति (śāmyanti) - are pacified; are extinguished; तेजांसि (tejāṃsi) - the powers; energies; च (ca) - and; तपांसि (tapāṃsi) - the austerities; च (ca) - and;]
(Of others and of others and indeed also of those who are beyond others, of kṣatriyas who burn (shine), by splendor and by strength—indeed, in the brāhmaṇas are extinguished the powers and the austerities.)
The powers and austerities of all others, including those superior and high among the kṣatriyas, with their energy and strength, are ultimately pacified in the brāhmaṇas. (13-58-35)
न मे पिता प्रियतरो न त्वं तात तथा प्रियः। न मे पितुः पिता राजन्न चात्मा न च जीवितम् ॥१३-५८-३६॥
na me pitā priyataro na tvaṃ tāta tathā priyaḥ। na me pituḥ pitā rājann ca ātmā na ca jīvitam॥13-58-36॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; पिता (pitā) - father; प्रियतरः (priyataraḥ) - dearer; न (na) - not; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; तात (tāta) - dear father; तथा (tathā) - in that way; likewise; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; पितुः (pituḥ) - of my father; पिता (pitā) - father; राजन् (rājan) - O king; च (ca) - and; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
(Not to me father dearer, not you, O father, likewise dear. Not to me of my father father, O king, and self, not and life.)
To me, no one is dearer than my father, O father, not even you; nor is my father's father, O king, nor my own self, nor even my life. (13-58-36)
त्वत्तश्च मे प्रियतरः पृथिव्यां नास्ति कश्चन। त्वत्तोऽपि मे प्रियतरा ब्राह्मणा भरतर्षभ ॥१३-५८-३७॥
tvattaś ca me priyataraḥ pṛthivyāṃ nāsti kaścana। tvatto'pi me priyatarā brāhmaṇā bharatarṣabha ॥13-58-37॥
[त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; प्रियतरः (priyataraḥ) - dearer (masculine, nominative singular); पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on the earth; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; त्वत्तोऽपि (tvatto'pi) - than you also; मे (me) - to me; प्रियतरा (priyatarā) - dearer (feminine, nominative plural, for brāhmaṇāḥ; contextually, more dear); ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(From you and to me dearer on the earth there is not anyone. Than you also to me dearer are Brāhmaṇas, O bull among the Bharatas.)
There is no one on earth dearer to me than you; yet even than you, the Brāhmaṇas are dearer to me, O best of the Bharatas. (13-58-37)
ब्रवीमि सत्यमेतच्च यथाहं पाण्डुनन्दन। तेन सत्येन गच्छेयं लोकान्यत्र स शन्तनुः ॥१३-५८-३८॥
bravīmi satyam etac ca yathā ahaṃ pāṇḍunandana। tena satyena gaccheyaṃ lokān yatra sa śantanuḥ॥13-58-38॥
[ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; सत्यं (satyam) - truth; एतच्च (etac ca) - and this; यथा (yathā) - as; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; पाण्डुनन्दन (pāṇḍunandana) - O descendant of Paṇḍu; तेन (tena) - by that; सत्येन (satyena) - truth; गच्छेयं (gaccheyaṃ) - may I go; लोकान् (lokān) - to worlds; यत्र (yatra) - where; स (sa) - that; शन्तनुः (śantanuḥ) - Śantanu;]
(I speak the truth and this, as I, O descendant of Paṇḍu. By that truth may I go to the worlds where that Śantanu (is).)
I truly speak this, O descendant of Paṇḍu. By that truth, may I reach those worlds where Śantanu is. (13-58-38)
पश्येयं च सतां लोकाञ्छुचीन्ब्रह्मपुरस्कृतान्। तत्र मे तात गन्तव्यमह्नाय च चिराय च ॥१३-५८-३९॥
paśyeyaṃ ca satāṃ lokāñ chucīn brahmapuraskṛtān। tatra me tāta gantavyam ahnāya ca cirāya ca ॥13-58-39॥
[पश्येयं (paśyeyam) - may I see; च (ca) - and; सतां (satām) - of the virtuous; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; शुचीन् (śucīn) - pure; ब्रह्मपुरस्कृतान् (brahma-puraskṛtān) - preceded by Brahman; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - for me; तात (tāta) - O father; गन्तव्यम् (gantavyam) - is to be gone; अह्नाय (ahnāya) - for the day; च (ca) - and; चिराय (cirāya) - for a long time; च (ca) - and;]
(May I see and the worlds of the virtuous, pure, preceded by Brahman. There for me, O father, is to be gone, for the day and for a long time and (then).)
May I see the pure worlds of the virtuous, presided over by Brahman. There, O father, I must go, both for a day and for a long time. (13-58-39)
सोऽहमेतादृशाँल्लोकान्दृष्ट्वा भरतसत्तम। यन्मे कृतं ब्राह्मणेषु न तप्ये तेन पार्थिव ॥१३-५८-४०॥
so'ham etādṛśāṁl lokān dṛṣṭvā bharatasattama। yan me kṛtaṁ brāhmaṇeṣu na tapye tena pārthiva ॥13-58-40॥

(He I such as these worlds having seen, O best of the Bharatas, which by me done to the brāhmaṇas, not I repent therefore, O king.)
O best of the Bharatas, seeing such worlds as these, I do not regret what I have done to the brāhmaṇas, O king. (13-58-40)
