yau tu syātāṃ caraṇenopapannau; yau vidyayā sadṛśau janmanā ca. tābhyāṃ dānaṃ katarasmai viśiṣṭa; mayācamānāya ca yācate ca ॥13-59-1॥
[यौ (yau) - which two; तु (tu) - but; स्यातां (syātāṃ) - may be (dual); चरणेन (caraṇena) - by conduct; उपपन्नौ (upapannau) - endowed (dual); यौ (yau) - which two; विद्यया (vidyayā) - by knowledge; सदृशौ (sadṛśau) - equal (dual); जन्मना (janmanā) - by birth; च (ca) - and; ताभ्यां (tābhyāṃ) - to those two; दानं (dānaṃ) - gift; कतरस्मै (katarasmai) - to which one; विशिष्ट (viśiṣṭa) - distinguished; मया (mayā) - by me; आचमानाय (ācamānāya) - to him who has performed ācamana; च (ca) - and; याचते (yācate) - asks (begs); च (ca) - and;]
(Which two indeed may be endowed by conduct; which two are equal by knowledge and by birth; to those two, to which one is the gift superior; by me, to him who has performed ācamana and who asks.)
Of two persons: one who is endowed with proper conduct, and one who is equal in knowledge and by birth—which of these two deserves a superior gift from me: the one who has performed ācamana, or the one who requests? (13-59-1)

श्रेयो वै याचतः पार्थ दत्तमाहुरयाचते। अर्हत्तमो वै धृतिमान्कृपणादधृतात्मनः ॥१३-५९-२॥
śreyo vai yācataḥ pārtha dattam āhur ayācate। arhattamo vai dhṛtimān kṛpaṇād adhṛtātmanaḥ ॥13-59-2॥
[श्रेयो (śreyaḥ) - better; वै (vai) - indeed; याचतः (yācataḥ) - of one who asks; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; दत्तम् (dattam) - gift; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; अयाचते (ayācate) - of one who does not ask; अर्हत्तमः (arhattamaḥ) - most worthy; वै (vai) - indeed; धृतिमान् (dhṛtimān) - one who is steadfast; कृपणात् (kṛpaṇāt) - than a miser; अधृतात्मनः (adhṛtātmanaḥ) - than one lacking steadfastness;]
(Better indeed is the gift given to one who asks, O Pārtha, they say, than to one who does not ask. The most worthy indeed is the steadfast one, more than a miser, than one lacking steadfastness.)
O Pārtha, they say that a gift given to a supplicant is truly better than to one who does not ask. The steadfast person is considered most worthy, more than a miser or one lacking firmness. (13-59-2)
क्षत्रियो रक्षणधृतिर्ब्राह्मणोऽनर्थनाधृतिः। ब्राह्मणो धृतिमान्विद्वान्देवान्प्रीणाति तुष्टिमान् ॥१३-५९-३॥
kṣatriyo rakṣaṇadhṛtir brāhmaṇo'narthanādhṛtiḥ। brāhmaṇo dhṛtimān vidvān devān prīṇāti tuṣṭimān ॥13-59-3॥
[क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) (kṣatriyaḥ) - warrior; रक्षणधृतिः (rakṣaṇa-dhṛtiḥ) (rakṣaṇa-dhṛtiḥ) - he whose firmness is in protection; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; priest; अनर्थनाधृतिः (anarthanā-dhṛtiḥ) (anarthanā-dhṛtiḥ) - whose firmness is not in acquisition (not in seeking profit); ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; priest; धृतिमान् (dhṛtimān) (dhṛtimān) - firm; steadfast; विद्वान् (vidvān) (vidvān) - wise; learned; देवान् (devān) (devān) - the gods; प्रीणाति (prīṇāti) (prīṇāti) - pleases; तुष्टिमान् (tuṣṭimān) (tuṣṭimān) - content; satisfied;]
(The kṣatriya is one whose firmness is in protection; the brāhmaṇa is one whose firmness is not in acquisition. The brāhmaṇa, being firm, wise, pleases the gods and is content.)
A kṣatriya is steadfast in protection, while a brāhmaṇa is steadfast without seeking gain. The brāhmaṇa, firm and wise, pleases the gods and is content. (13-59-3)
याच्ञामाहुरनीशस्य अभिहारं च भारत। उद्वेजयति याचन्हि सदा भूतानि दस्युवत् ॥१३-५९-४॥
yācñām āhur anīśasya abhihāraṃ ca bhārata। udvejayati yācan hi sadā bhūtāni dasyuvat॥13-59-4॥
[याच्ञाम् (yācñām) - begging; आहु: (āhuḥ) - they say; अनीशस्य (anīśasya) - of one bereft of power; अभिहारं (abhihāram) - seizure; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; उद्वेजयति (udvejayati) - agitates; याचन् (yācan) - a beggar; हि (hi) - indeed; सदा (sadā) - always; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - living beings; दस्युवत् (dasyuvat) - like a thief;]
(They say begging is the seizure of one bereft of power, and, O Bhārata, a beggar indeed always agitates living beings, like a thief.)
O Bhārata, they say begging is the resort of the powerless; for a beggar always disturbs living beings, just like a thief. (13-59-4)
म्रियते याचमानो वै तमनु म्रियते ददत्। ददत्सञ्जीवयत्येनमात्मानं च युधिष्ठिर ॥१३-५९-५॥
mriyate yācamāno vai tam-anu mriyate dadat। dadat sañjīvayaty enam ātmānaṃ ca yudhiṣṭhira॥13-59-5॥

आनृशंस्यं परो धर्मो याचते यत्प्रदीयते। अयाचतः सीदमानान्सर्वोपायैर्निमन्त्रय ॥१३-५९-६॥
ānṛśaṁsyaṁ paro dharmo yācate yat pradīyate। ayācataḥ sīdamānān sarvopāyair nimantraya॥13-59-6॥

(Compassion, supreme duty, requests what is given; to one who does not ask, to those who are sinking, by all means, invite.)
Compassion is the supreme duty that requests what is given; invite by all means those who are not asking and are in distress. (13-59-6)
यदि वै तादृशा राष्ट्रे वसेयुस्ते द्विजोत्तमाः। भस्मच्छन्नानिवाग्नींस्तान्बुध्येथास्त्वं प्रयत्नतः ॥१३-५९-७॥
yadi vai tādṛśā rāṣṭre vaseyus te dvijottamāḥ। bhasmacchannān ivāgnīṁs tān budhyethās tvaṁ prayatnataḥ॥13-59-7॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; वै (vai) - indeed; तादृशा (tādṛśāḥ) - such; राष्ट्रे (rāṣṭre) - in the kingdom; वसेयुः (vaseyuḥ) - they might dwell; ते (te) - those; द्विजोत्तमाः (dvijottamāḥ) - best of twice-born (brāhmaṇas); भस्मच्छन्नानिवाग्नीन् (bhasmacchannān iva agnīn) - like fires covered with ashes; तान् (tān) - them; बुध्येथाः (budhyethāḥ) - you should recognize; त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्रयत्नतः (prayatnataḥ) - with effort;]
(If indeed such (brāhmaṇas) the best of twice-born might dwell in the kingdom, those, like fires covered with ashes, them you should recognize, you, with effort.)

तपसा दीप्यमानास्ते दहेयुः पृथिवीमपि। पूज्या हि ज्ञानविज्ञानतपोयोगसमन्विताः ॥१३-५९-८॥
tapasā dīpyamānās te daheyuḥ pṛthivīm api। pūjyā hi jñānavijñānatapoyogasamanvitāḥ ॥13-59-8॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; दीप्यमानाः (dīpyamānāḥ) - shining; ते (te) - they; दहेयुः (daheyuḥ) - they could burn; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - earth; अपि (api) - even; पूज्याः (pūjyāḥ) - worthy of worship; हि (hi) - indeed; ज्ञान (jñāna) - knowledge; विज्ञान (vijñāna) - wisdom; तपः (tapaḥ) - asceticism; योग (yoga) - spiritual discipline; समन्विताः (samanvitāḥ) - endowed with;]
(By austerity shining they could burn even the earth. Worthy of worship indeed those endowed with knowledge, wisdom, asceticism, and spiritual discipline.)

तेभ्यः पूजां प्रयुञ्जीथा ब्राह्मणेभ्यः परन्तप। ददद्बहुविधान्दायानुपच्छन्दानयाचताम् ॥१३-५९-९॥
tebhyaḥ pūjāṃ prayuñjīthā brāhmaṇebhyaḥ parantapa। dadadbahuvidhāndāyānupacchandānayācatām ॥13-59-9॥
[तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - to them; पूजां (pūjām) - worship; प्रयुञ्जीथा (prayuñjīthā) - you should perform; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; ददत् (dadat) - giving; बहुविधान् (bahuvidhān) - many kinds of; दायान् (dāyān) - gifts; उपच्छन्दान् (upacchandān) - supplementary (gifts); याचताम् (yācatām) - to those asking;]
(To them, worship you should perform; to the Brāhmaṇas, O scorcher of foes, giving many kinds of gifts, supplementary gifts, to those who ask.)
O scorcher of foes, to those Brāhmaṇas you should offer worship, giving many kinds of gifts and supplementary gifts to those who ask. (13-59-9)
यदग्निहोत्रे सुहुते सायम्प्रातर्भवेत्फलम्। विद्यावेदव्रतवति तद्दानफलमुच्यते ॥१३-५९-१०॥
yad agnihotre suhute sāyamprātar bhavet phalam। vidyā-veda-vratavati tad dāna-phalam ucyate ॥13-59-10॥
[यत् (yat) - that which; अग्निहोत्रे (agnihotre) - in the Agnihotra (sacrificial fire ritual); सुहुते (suhute) - well-offered; सायम् (sāyam) - in the evening; प्रातर् (prātar) - in the morning; भवेत् (bhavet) - arises; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; result; विद्यावेदव्रतवति (vidyā-veda-vratavati) - in one who possesses knowledge, the Veda, and observance of vows; तत् (tad) - that; दानफलम् (dāna-phalam) - the fruit of giving; the result of charity; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said;]
(That which, in the Agnihotra, well-offered, in evening and in morning, arises as fruit; in one possessing knowledge, the Veda, and vow, that is said to be the fruit of giving.)
Whatever fruit arises from the well-offered Agnihotra in the evening and morning, in one who possesses knowledge, the Veda, and a vow, that is declared to be the fruit of giving. (13-59-10)
विद्यावेदव्रतस्नातानव्यपाश्रयजीविनः। गूढस्वाध्यायतपसो ब्राह्मणान्संशितव्रतान् ॥१३-५९-११॥
vidyā-veda-vrata-snātān-avyapāśraya-jīvinaḥ। gūḍha-svādhyāya-tapasaḥ brāhmaṇān saṁśita-vratān ॥13-59-11॥
[विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; वेद (veda) - Veda; व्रत (vrata) - vow; स्नातान् (snātān) - initiated (in sacred bath); अव्यपाश्रय (avyapāśraya) - without dependence; जीविनः (jīvinaḥ) - those who live; गूढ (gūḍha) - hidden; स्वाध्याय (svādhyāya) - self-study; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; संशित (saṁśita) - firm; व्रतान् (vratān) - in vows;]
(Those Brāhmaṇas, with knowledge, Veda, vow, initiated (in sacred bath), living without dependence, hidden self-study and austerity, firm in vows.)
Brāhmaṇas endowed with knowledge, Veda, vows, who have been initiated, who live independently, whose austerities and self-study are concealed, steadfast in their vows. (13-59-11)
कृतैरावसथैर्हृद्यैः सप्रेष्यैः सपरिच्छदैः। निमन्त्रयेथाः कौन्तेय कामैश्चान्यैर्द्विजोत्तमान् ॥१३-५९-१२॥
kṛtair āvasathair hṛdyaiḥ sapreṣyaiḥ saparicchadaiḥ। nimantrayeythāḥ kaunteya kāmaiś cānyair dvijottamān ॥13-59-12॥
[कृतैः (kṛtaiḥ) - prepared; done; आवसथैः (āvasathaiḥ) - with residences; abodes; हृद्यैः (hṛdyaiḥ) - pleasing; delightful; सप्रेष्यैः (sapreṣyaiḥ) - with attendants; with servants; सपरिच्छदैः (saparicchadaiḥ) - with equipment; with furnishings; निमन्त्रयेथाः (nimantrayeythāḥ) - you should invite; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kuntī; कामैः (kāmaiḥ) - with desires; with wishes; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - with others; द्विजोत्तमान् (dvijottamān) - the best among twice-born; the foremost Brāhmaṇas;]
(With pleasing prepared residences, with attendants, with furnishings, you should invite, O son of Kuntī, the foremost Brāhmaṇas with desires and with others.)
O son of Kuntī, you should invite the foremost Brāhmaṇas together with others, providing delightful prepared residences attended by servants and furnished with equipment for their satisfaction. (13-59-12)
अपि ते प्रतिगृह्णीयुः श्रद्धापूतं युधिष्ठिर। कार्यमित्येव मन्वाना धर्मज्ञाः सूक्ष्मदर्शिनः ॥१३-५९-१३॥
api te pratigṛhṇīyuḥ śraddhāpūtaṃ yudhiṣṭhira। kāryamityeva manvānā dharmajñāḥ sūkṣmadarśinaḥ ॥13-59-13॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; however; ते (te) - your; प्रतिगृह्णीयुः (pratigṛhṇīyuḥ) - would accept; श्रद्धापूतं (śraddhāpūtaṃ) - purified by faith; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - only; surely; मन्वाना (manvānā) - thinking; धर्मज्ञाः (dharmajñāḥ) - knowers of dharma; सूक्ष्मदर्शिनः (sūkṣmadarśinaḥ) - subtle-seers;]
(Indeed, your (gift), purified by faith, O Yudhiṣṭhira, would be accepted, thinking it certainly as duty to be done, by those knowers of dharma possessing subtle insight.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, the knowers of dharma endowed with subtle insight would indeed accept your gift purified by faith, thinking it alone as something that must be done. (13-59-13)
अपि ते ब्राह्मणा भुक्त्वा गताः सोद्धरणान्गृहान्। येषां दाराः प्रतीक्षन्ते पर्जन्यमिव कर्षकाः ॥१३-५९-१४॥
api te brāhmaṇā bhuktvā gatāḥ soddharaṇān gṛhān। yeṣāṃ dārāḥ pratīkṣante parjanyam iva karṣakāḥ॥13-59-14॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; however; ते (te) - those; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; गताः (gatāḥ) - departed; स-उद्धरणान् (so-ddharaṇān) - with their portions (of offerings); गृहान् (gṛhān) - to (their) homes; येषां (yeṣām) - whose; दाराः (dārāḥ) - wives; प्रतीक्षन्ते (pratīkṣante) - are waiting; पर्जन्यम् (parjanyam) - the rain-cloud; इव (iva) - like; कर्षकाः (karṣakāḥ) - cultivators;]
(Indeed, those Brāhmaṇas, having eaten, departed with their portions to (their) homes, whose wives are waiting, like cultivators for the rain-cloud.)
Have those Brāhmaṇas, after eating and taking their shares, gone home—those whose wives wait for them as farmers wait for the rain-cloud? (13-59-14)
अन्नानि प्रातःसवने नियता ब्रह्मचारिणः। ब्राह्मणास्तात भुञ्जानास्त्रेताग्नीन्प्रीणयन्तु ते ॥१३-५९-१५॥
annāni prātaḥ-savane niyatā brahmacāriṇaḥ । brāhmaṇās-tāta bhuñjānās-tretāgnīn prīṇayantu te ॥13-59-15॥
[अन्नानि (annāni) - foods; प्रातःसवने (prātaḥ-savane) - in the morning soma-pressing (ritual); नियता (niyatā) - self-restrained; ब्रह्मचारिणः (brahmacāriṇaḥ) - celibates; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; तात (tāta) - O dear; भुञ्जानाः (bhuñjānāḥ) - eating; त्रेताग्नीन् (tretāgnīn) - the three sacred fires; प्रीणयन्तु (prīṇayantu) - may they please; ते (te) - they;]
(Foods in the morning soma-pressing ritual, self-restrained celibates, Brāhmaṇas, O dear, eating, the three sacred fires, may they please, they.)
O dear, let the self-restrained celibate Brāhmaṇas, eating the foods at the morning soma-pressing, please the three sacred fires. (13-59-15)
माध्यंदिनं ते सवनं ददतस्तात वर्तताम्। गा हिरण्यानि वासांसि तेनेन्द्रः प्रीयतां तव ॥१३-५९-१६॥
mādhyaṃdinaṃ te savanaṃ dadatastāta vartatām। gā hiraṇyāni vāsāṃsi tenendraḥ prīyatāṃ tava॥13-59-16॥
[माध्यंदिनं (mādhyaṃdinaṃ) - midday (Soma offering); ते (te) - your; सवनं (savanaṃ) - pressing (Soma-sacrifice); ददत (dadat) - giving; स्तात (tāta) - O dear; (vocative); वर्तताम् (vartatām) - may it proceed; गा (gāḥ) - cows; हिरण्यानि (hiraṇyāni) - gold; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - garments; तेन (tena) - by that; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; प्रीयतां (prīyatām) - may (he) be pleased; (optative passive); तव (tava) - with you;]
(Midday Soma-offering your sacrifice giving O dear may it proceed. Cows, gold, garments—by that may Indra be pleased with you. (13-59-16))
O dear, may your midday Soma offering be performed; may cows, gold, and garments be given, and by this may Indra be pleased with you. (13-59-16)
तृतीयं सवनं तत्ते वैश्वदेवं युधिष्ठिर। यद्देवेभ्यः पितृभ्यश्च विप्रेभ्यश्च प्रयच्छसि ॥१३-५९-१७॥
tṛtīyaṃ savanaṃ tatte vaiśvadevaṃ yudhiṣṭhira। yad devebhyaḥ pitṛbhyaś ca viprebhyaś ca prayacchasi ॥13-59-17॥
[तृतीयं (tṛtīyam) - third; सवनं (savanam) - sacrifice; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - your; वैश्वदेवं (vaiśvadevam) - of Viśvadevas (offering to all gods); युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; यत् (yat) - which; देवेभ्यः (devebhyaḥ) - to the gods; पितृभ्यः (pitṛbhyaḥ) - to the ancestors; च (ca) - and; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - to the brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; प्रयच्छसि (prayacchasi) - you offer;]
(Third sacrifice, that your Vaiśvadeva, Yudhiṣṭhira, which to the gods, to the ancestors and to the brāhmaṇas and you offer.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, the third oblation, that Vaiśvadeva, you offer to the gods, ancestors, and brāhmaṇas. (13-59-17)
अहिंसा सर्वभूतेभ्यः संविभागश्च सर्वशः। दमस्त्यागो धृतिः सत्यं भवत्ववभृथाय ते ॥१३-५९-१८॥
ahiṁsā sarvabhūtebhyaḥ saṁvibhāgaś ca sarvaśaḥ। damas tyāgo dhṛtiḥ satyaṁ bhavatv avabhṛthāya te॥13-59-18॥
[अहिंसा (ahiṁsā) - non-injury; सर्वभूतेभ्यः (sarvabhūtebhyaḥ) - towards all beings; संविभागः (saṁvibhāgaḥ) - sharing (of wealth/food); च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; दमः (damaḥ) - self-restraint; त्यागः (tyāgaḥ) - renunciation; धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; भवतु (bhavatu) - let there be; अवभृथाय (avabhṛthāya) - for the avabhṛtha (concluding bath/rite); ते (te) - for you;]
(Non-injury towards all beings, sharing and in every way, self-restraint, renunciation, steadfastness, truth — let there be for the avabhṛtha for you.)
Let non-injury towards all beings, sharing in every way, self-restraint, renunciation, steadfastness, and truth be present for you at the avabhṛtha ceremony. (13-59-18)
एष ते विततो यज्ञः श्रद्धापूतः सदक्षिणः। विशिष्टः सर्वयज्ञेभ्यो नित्यं तात प्रवर्तताम् ॥१३-५९-१९॥
