मुह्यामीव निशम्याद्य चिन्तयानः पुनः पुनः। हीनां पार्थिवसङ्घातैः श्रीमद्भिः पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥१३-५७-१॥
muhyāmīva niśamyādya cintayānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ। hīnāṃ pārthivasaṅghātaiḥ śrīmadbhiḥ pṛthivīmimām॥13-57-1॥
[मुह्यामि (muhyāmi) - I am bewildered; इव (iva) - as if; निशम्य (niśamya) - hearing; आद्य (ādya) - today; चिन्तयानः (cintayānaḥ) - contemplating; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; हीनाम् (hīnāṃ) - deprived; पार्थिवसङ्घातैः (pārthivasaṅghātaiḥ) - by assemblies of kings; श्रीमद्भिः (śrīmadbhiḥ) - prosperous; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - earth; इमाम् (imām) - this;]
(I am bewildered as if, hearing today, contemplating again and again, this earth deprived of prosperous assemblies of kings.)
Hearing today and reflecting again and again, I feel as if bewildered by this earth now deprived of her prosperous gatherings of kings. (13-57-1)
प्राप्य राज्यानि शतशो महीं जित्वापि भारत। कोटिशः पुरुषान्हत्वा परितप्ये पितामह ॥१३-५७-२॥
prāpya rājyāni śataśo mahīṃ jitvāpi bhārata। koṭiśaḥ puruṣānhatvā paritapye pitāmaha ॥13-57-2॥
[प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; राज्यानि (rājyāni) - kingdoms (plural); शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; महीं (mahīm) - the earth; जित्वा अपि (jitvā api) - even having conquered; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; कोटिशः (koṭiśaḥ) - by crores; पुरुषान् (puruṣān) - men; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; परितप्ये (paritapye) - I lament; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(Having obtained kingdoms by hundreds, even having conquered the earth, O Bhārata, having slain men by crores, I lament, O grandsire.)
O Bhārata, though I have obtained hundreds of kingdoms, conquered the earth, and slain millions of men, I grieve, O grandsire. (13-57-2)
का नु तासां वरस्त्रीणामवस्थाद्य भविष्यति। या हीनाः पतिभिः पुत्रैर्मातुलैर्भ्रातृभिस्तथा ॥१३-५७-३॥
kā nu tāsāṃ varastrīṇām avasthā adya bhaviṣyati. yā hīnāḥ patibhiḥ putraiḥ mātulaiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ tathā ॥13-57-3॥
[का (kā) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तासां (tāsāṃ) - of those; वरस्त्रीणाम् (varastrīṇām) - excellent women; अवस्था (avasthā) - condition; अद्य (adya) - today; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; या (yā) - who; हिनाः (hīnāḥ) - deprived; पतिभिः (patibhiḥ) - of husbands; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - of sons; मातुलैः (mātulaiḥ) - of maternal uncles; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - of brothers; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(What indeed of those excellent women, their condition today will be, who deprived of husbands, sons, maternal uncles, also of brothers?)
What indeed will become of those noble women today, who are now bereft of husbands, sons, maternal uncles, and brothers? (13-57-3)
वयं हि तान्गुरून्हत्वा ज्ञातींश्च सुहृदोऽपि च। अवाक्षीर्षाः पतिष्यामो नरके नात्र संशयः ॥१३-५७-४॥
vayaṁ hi tān gurūn hatvā jñātīṁś ca suhṛdo 'pi ca। avākśīrṣāḥ patiṣyāmo narake nātra saṁśayaḥ॥13-57-4॥
[वयं (vayam) - we; हि (hi) - indeed; तान् (tān) - those; गुरून् (gurūn) - elders; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; ज्ञातीन् (jñātīn) - kinsmen; च (ca) - and; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; अवाक्-शीर्षाः (avāk-śīrṣāḥ) - head-downward; पतिष्यामः (patiṣyāmaḥ) - shall fall; नरके (narake) - into hell; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(We indeed, those elders having slain, kinsmen and friends also and, head downward, shall fall into hell; not here (is) doubt.)
Indeed, if we kill those elders, kinsmen, and also friends, we shall fall headlong into hell; there is no doubt about this. (13-57-4)
शरीरं योक्तुमिच्छामि तपसोग्रेण भारत। उपदिष्टमिहेच्छामि तत्त्वतोऽहं विशां पते ॥१३-५७-५॥
śarīraṃ yoktum icchāmi tapasograṇā bhārata। upadiṣṭam ihecchāmi tattvato'haṃ viśāṃ pate ॥13-57-5॥

O Bhārata, I desire to unite the body by severe austerity. Here, I desire to be instructed in reality, O lord of men. (13-57-5)

yudhiṣṭhirasya tadvākyaṃ śrutvā bhīṣmo mahāmanāḥ। parīkṣya nipuṇaṃ buddhyā yudhiṣṭhiram abhāṣata ॥13-57-6॥

Hearing Yudhiṣṭhira's speech, Bhīṣma, the great-minded, carefully considered Yudhiṣṭhira's words with skill and then spoke. (13-57-6)
रहस्यमद्भुतं चैव शृणु वक्ष्यामि यत्त्वयि। या गतिः प्राप्यते येन प्रेत्यभावेषु भारत ॥१३-५७-७॥
rahasyam adbhutaṃ caiva śṛṇu vakṣyāmi yat tvayi। yā gatiḥ prāpyate yena pretyabhāveṣu bhārata ॥13-57-7॥
[रहस्यम् (rahasyam) (rahasyam) - secret; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) (adbhutam) - wondrous; च (ca) (ca) - and; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; शृणु (śṛṇu) (śṛṇu) - hear; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) (vakṣyāmi) - I shall declare; यत् (yat) (yat) - which; त्वयि (tvayi) (tvayi) - to you; या (yā) (yā) - which; गतिः (gatiḥ) (gatiḥ) - state; प्राप्यते (prāpyate) (prāpyate) - is attained; येन (yena) (yena) - by which; प्रेत्यभावेषु (pretyabhāveṣu) (pretyabhāveṣu) - after-death states; भारत (bhārata) (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Secret wondrous and indeed hear I shall declare which to you; which state is attained by which in after-death states, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, hear the secret and wondrous teaching I shall now reveal to you—what that state is which is attained after death, and by which (means one attains it). (13-57-7)
तपसा प्राप्यते स्वर्गस्तपसा प्राप्यते यशः। आयुःप्रकर्षो भोगाश्च लभ्यन्ते तपसा विभो ॥१३-५७-८॥
tapasā prāpyate svargastapasā prāpyate yaśaḥ। āyuḥ-prakarṣo bhogāś ca labhyante tapasā vibho॥13-57-8॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; by penance; प्राप्यते (prāpyate) - is attained; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; by penance; प्राप्यते (prāpyate) - is attained; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; glory; आयुःप्रकर्षः (āyuḥ-prakarṣaḥ) - increase of lifespan; भोगाः (bhogāḥ) - enjoyments; pleasures; च (ca) - and; लभ्यन्ते (labhyante) - are gained; are obtained; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; by penance; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one;]
(By austerity heaven is attained, by austerity fame is attained. Increase of lifespan and pleasures also are gained by austerity, O mighty one.)
Heaven is attained by austerity; fame is likewise attained by austerity. Increase of lifespan and enjoyments are also obtained by austerity, O mighty one. (13-57-8)
ज्ञानं विज्ञानमारोग्यं रूपं सम्पत्तथैव च। सौभाग्यं चैव तपसा प्राप्यते भरतर्षभ ॥१३-५७-९॥
jñānaṁ vijñānam ārogyaṁ rūpaṁ sampattathaiva ca। saubhāgyaṁ caiva tapasā prāpyate bharatarṣabha ॥13-57-9॥
[ज्ञानम् (jñānam) - knowledge; विज्ञानम् (vijñānam) - discernment; आरोग्यम् (ārogyam) - health; रूपम् (rūpam) - beauty; सम्पत्त् (sampatt) - prosperity; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; सौभाग्यम् (saubhāgyam) - good fortune; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; प्राप्यते (prāpyate) - is obtained; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Knowledge, discernment, health, beauty, prosperity likewise and good fortune and indeed by austerity are obtained, O best of Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, knowledge, discernment, health, beauty, prosperity, and even good fortune are obtained through austerity. (13-57-9)
धनं प्राप्नोति तपसा मौनं ज्ञानं प्रयच्छति। उपभोगांस्तु दानेन ब्रह्मचर्येण जीवितम् ॥१३-५७-१०॥
dhanaṁ prāpnoti tapasā maunaṁ jñānaṁ prayacchati। upabhogāṁs tu dānena brahmacaryeṇa jīvitam ॥13-57-10॥
[धनं (dhanaṁ) - wealth; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; मौनं (maunaṁ) - silence; ज्ञानं (jñānaṁ) - knowledge; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives; उपभोगान् (upabhogān) - enjoyments; तु (tu) - but; दानेन (dānena) - by charity; ब्रह्मचर्येण (brahmacaryeṇa) - by celibacy; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
(Wealth attains by austerity, silence knowledge gives. Enjoyments but by charity, by celibacy life.)
Wealth is attained through austerity, silence gives knowledge. Enjoyments come through charity, and life through celibacy. (13-57-10)
अहिंसायाः फलं रूपं दीक्षाया जन्म वै कुले। फलमूलाशिनां राज्यं स्वर्गः पर्णाशिनां भवेत् ॥१३-५७-११॥
ahiṁsāyāḥ phalaṁ rūpaṁ dīkṣāyā janma vai kule। phalamūlāśināṁ rājyaṁ svargaḥ parṇāśināṁ bhavet ॥13-57-11॥
[अहिंसायाः (ahiṁsāyāḥ) - of non-violence; फलं (phalaṁ) - fruit; (result;) रूपं (rūpaṁ) - form; (appearance;) दीक्षाया (dīkṣāyā) - of initiation (religious vow); जन्म (janma) - birth; वै (vai) - indeed; कुले (kule) - in a family; फलमूलाशिनां (phalamūlāśināṁ) - of those who subsist on fruits and roots; राज्यं (rājyaṁ) - kingdom; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; पर्णाशिनां (parṇāśināṁ) - of those who subsist on leaves; भवेत् (bhavet) - is (becomes;);]
(Of non-violence the fruit is form; of initiation birth indeed in a family. Of those who subsist on fruits and roots, kingdom; heaven is of those who subsist on leaves.)
The fruit of non-violence is beauty of form; the result of initiation is birth in a noble family. Those who subsist on fruits and roots attain kingdom, but those who subsist on leaves attain heaven. (13-57-11)
पयोभक्षो दिवं याति स्नानेन द्रविणाधिकः। गुरुशुश्रूषया विद्या नित्यश्राद्धेन सन्ततिः ॥१३-५७-१२॥
payobhakṣo divaṃ yāti snānena draviṇādhikaḥ। guruśuśrūṣayā vidyā nityaśrāddhena santatiḥ॥13-57-12॥
[पयोभक्षः (payobhakṣaḥ) - one who partakes of milk; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; याति (yāti) - goes; स्नानेन (snānena) - by bathing; द्रविणाधिकः (draviṇādhikaḥ) - one rich in wealth; गुरुशुश्रूषया (guruśuśrūṣayā) - by service to the teacher; विध्या (vidyā) - knowledge; नित्यश्राद्धेन (nityaśrāddhena) - by daily śrāddha; सन्ततिः (santatiḥ) - progeny;]
(One who partakes of milk goes to heaven; by bathing, one attains wealth; by service to the teacher, knowledge; by daily śrāddha, progeny.)
He who partakes of milk attains heaven; through bathing comes wealth; through service to the teacher comes knowledge; through daily śrāddha comes progeny. (13-57-12)
गवाढ्यः शाकदीक्षाभिः स्वर्गमाहुस्तृणाशनात्। स्त्रियस्त्रिषवणस्नानाद्वायुं पीत्वा क्रतुं लभेत् ॥१३-५७-१३॥
gavāḍhyaḥ śākadīkṣābhiḥ svargam āhus tṛṇāśanāt। striyas triṣavaṇasnānād vāyuṃ pītvā kratuṃ labheta ॥13-57-13॥
[गवाढ्यः (gavāḍhyaḥ) - one who possesses cattle; शाकदीक्षाभिः (śākadīkṣābhiḥ) - by vows consisting in subsisting on vegetables; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; तृणाशनात् (tṛṇāśanāt) - than eating grass; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; त्रिषवणस्नानात् (triṣavaṇasnānāt) - by bathing at the three periods of the day; वायुम् (vāyum) - air; पीत्वा (pītvā) - having drunk; क्रतुम् (kratum) - sacrifice; लभेत् (labheta) - one may obtain;]
(They say that those who possess cattle, by vows of subsisting on vegetables, (attain) heaven rather than eating grass. Women, by bathing three times a day, having drunk air, may obtain a sacrifice.)
They say that one who possesses cattle attains heaven by undertaking vows that involve eating vegetables, rather than by eating grass; women, by bathing at the three sacred times of the day and subsisting on air, may attain the merit of a sacrifice. (13-57-13)
नित्यस्नायी भवेद्दक्षः सन्ध्ये तु द्वे जपन्द्विजः। मरुं साधयतो राज्यं नाकपृष्ठमनाशके ॥१३-५७-१४॥
nityasnāpī bhaveddakṣaḥ sandhye tu dve japandvijaḥ| maruṃ sādhayato rājyaṃ nākapṛṣṭham anāśake ॥13-57-14॥
[नित्यस्नायी (nityasnāpī) - one who bathes daily; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; दक्षः (dakṣaḥ) - skilful; सन्ध्ये (sandhye) - at the two twilights (morning and evening); तु (tu) - but; द्वे (dve) - two; जपन् (japan) - reciting; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - a twice-born; मरुं (maruṃ) - Maru (a proper noun, possibly a sage or deity); साधयतः (sādhayataḥ) - while accomplishing; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingship; नाकपृष्ठम् (nākapṛṣṭham) - the supreme heaven; अनाशके (anāśake) - in the imperishable;]
(One who bathes daily should be skilful; at the two twilights but reciting twice a twice-born, Maru while accomplishing kingship, the supreme heaven in the imperishable.)
One who bathes daily should be skilful; but a twice-born reciting at the two twilights attains, while successfully accomplishing Maru, both kingship and the highest heaven which is imperishable. (13-57-14)
स्थण्डिले शयमानानां गृहाणि शयनानि च। चीरवल्कलवासोभिर्वासांस्याभरणानि च ॥१३-५७-१५॥
sthaṇḍile śayamānānāṃ gṛhāṇi śayanāni ca। cīravalkalavāsobhirvāsāṃsyābharaṇāni ca ॥13-57-15॥
[स्थण्डिले (sthaṇḍile) - on the bare ground; शयमानानां (śayamānānāṃ) - of those lying (down); गृहाणि (gṛhāṇi) - dwellings; शयनानि (śayanāni) - beds; च (ca) - and; चीरवल्कलवासोभिः (cīra-valkala-vāsobhiḥ) - with garments of bark and skin; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - clothes; आभरणानि (ābharaṇāni) - ornaments; च (ca) - and;]
(Of those lying on the bare ground, dwellings and beds; with garments of bark and skin, clothes and ornaments.)
For those who lie on the bare ground, their dwellings and beds are with bark and skin garments, their clothes and ornaments likewise. (13-57-15)
शय्यासनानि यानानि योगयुक्ते तपोधने। अग्निप्रवेशे नियतं ब्रह्मलोको विधीयते ॥१३-५७-१६॥
śayyāsanāni yānāni yogayukte tapodhanē। agnipravēśē niyataṃ brahmalōkō vidhīyatē ॥13-57-16॥
[शय्यासनानि (śayyāsanāni) - beds and seats; यानानि (yānāni) - vehicles; योगयुक्ते (yogayukte) - to one endowed with yoga; तपोधने (tapodhanē) - ascetic of wealth (one rich in austerity); अग्निप्रवेशे (agnipravēśē) - at the entering into fire; नियतं (niyataṃ) - surely; ब्रह्मलोकः (brahmalōkaḥ) - the world of Brahma; विधीयते (vidhīyatē) - is ordained;]
(Beds and seats, vehicles, to one endowed with yoga, ascetic of wealth, at the entering into fire, surely, the world of Brahma, is ordained.)
Beds, seats, vehicles, for the ascetic endowed with yoga and austerity, at the entering into fire, surely the Brahma-world is ordained. (13-57-16)
रसानां प्रतिसंहारात्सौभाग्यमिह विन्दति। आमिषप्रतिसंहारात्प्रजास्यायुष्मती भवेत् ॥१३-५७-१७॥
rasānāṃ pratisaṃhārātsaubhāgyamiha vindati. āmiṣapratisaṃhārātprajāsyāyuṣmatī bhavet ॥13-57-17॥
[रसानाम् (rasānām) - of juices (or enjoyable objects); प्रतिसंहारात् (pratisaṃhārāt) - from restraint; सौभाग्यम् (saubhāgyam) - good fortune; इह (iha) - here; विन्दति (vindati) - obtains; आमिष (āmiṣa) - of meat; प्रतिसंहारात् (pratisaṃhārāt) - from restraint; प्रजा (prajā) - offspring; स्य (syā) - of him (her); आयुष्मती (āyuṣmatī) - long-lived; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become;]
(From restraint of enjoyable objects, here, one obtains good fortune. From restraint of meat, his offspring may become long-lived.)
By refraining from enjoyable objects, one obtains good fortune here. By refraining from meat, his offspring may become long-lived. (13-57-17)
उदवासं वसेद्यस्तु स नराधिपतिर्भवेत्। सत्यवादी नरश्रेष्ठ दैवतैः सह मोदते ॥१३-५७-१८॥
udavāsaṃ vased yastu sa narādhipatir bhavet। satyavādī naraśreṣṭha daivataiḥ saha modate॥ 13-57-18॥
[उदवासम् (udavāsam) - temporary residence; वसेत् (vaset) - should dwell; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; नराधिपतिः (narādhipatiḥ) - king; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; सत्यवादी (satyavādī) - speaker of truth; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - best of men; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - with the gods; सह (saha) - together with; मोदते (modate) - rejoices;]
(He who indeed should dwell in temporary residence, he becomes king; the truthful, O best of men, rejoices together with the gods.)
He who dwells as a temporary resident truly becomes a king; the one who speaks the truth, O best among men, rejoices along with the gods. (13-57-18)
कीर्तिर्भवति दानेन तथारोग्यमहिंसया। द्विजशुश्रूषया राज्यं द्विजत्वं वापि पुष्कलम् ॥१३-५७-१९॥
kīrtir bhavati dānena tathā arogyam ahiṁsayā। dvijaśuśrūṣayā rājyaṁ dvijatvaṁ vā api puṣkalam ॥13-57-19॥
[कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; भवति (bhavati) - arises; दानेन (dānena) - by giving; तथा (tathā) - thus; अरोग्यम् (arogyam) - health; अहिंसया (ahiṁsayā) - by non-violence; द्विजशुश्रूषया (dvijaśuśrūṣayā) - by serving the twice-born; राज्यम् (rājyaṁ) - kingdom; द्विजत्वम् (dvijatvam) - twice-born status; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; पुष्कलम् (puṣkalam) - abundant;]
(Fame arises by giving, thus health by non-violence; by serving the twice-born, kingdom or even abundant twice-born status.)
Fame comes by generosity, and health through non-violence; by serving the twice-born, one may gain a kingdom or abundant twice-born status. (13-57-19)
पानीयस्य प्रदानेन कीर्तिर्भवति शाश्वती। अन्नपानप्रदानेन तृप्यते कामभोगतः ॥१३-५७-२०॥
pānīyasya pradānena kīrtir bhavati śāśvatī. annapānapradānena tṛpyate kāmabhogataḥ ॥13-57-20॥

(One who consoles all beings is released from all sorrows. By service to the gods, he obtains a divine kingdom and form. (13-57-21))

दीपालोकप्रदानेन चक्षुष्मान्भवते नरः। प्रेक्षणीयप्रदानेन स्मृतिं मेधां च विन्दति ॥१३-५७-२२॥

(By the giving of illumination from a lamp, a man becomes possessed of sight. By the giving of something to be seen, he obtains memory and intelligence.)
When a man donates the light of a lamp, he gains eyesight; by offering objects worthy of seeing, he attains both memory and intelligence. (13-57-22)
गन्धमाल्यनिवृत्त्या तु कीर्तिर्भवति पुष्कला। केशश्मश्रून्धारयतामग्र्या भवति सन्ततिः ॥१३-५७-२३॥
gandhamālyanivṛttyā tu kīrtir bhavati puṣkalā। keśaśmaśrūndhārayatām agryā bhavati santatiḥ॥13-57-23॥
[गन्धमाल्यनिवृत्त्या (gandhamālyanivṛttyā) - by abstention from perfumes and garlands; तु (tu) - but; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; भवति (bhavati) - arises; पुष्कला (puṣkalā) - abundant; केशश्मश्रून्धारयताम् (keśaśmaśrūndhārayatām) - for those who let hair and beard grow; अग्र्या (agryā) - excellent; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; सन्ततिः (santatiḥ) - progeny;]
(By abstention from perfumes and garlands, but fame arises abundant. For those who let hair and beard grow, excellent becomes progeny.)
But by abstaining from perfumes and garlands, abundant fame is obtained; for those who let their hair and beard grow, excellent progeny is produced. (13-57-23)
उपवासं च दीक्षां च अभिषेकं च पार्थिव। कृत्वा द्वादश वर्षाणि वीरस्थानाद्विशिष्यते ॥१३-५७-२४॥
upavāsaṁ ca dīkṣāṁ ca abhiṣekaṁ ca pārthiva। kṛtvā dvādaśa varṣāṇi vīrasthānād viśiṣyate ॥13-57-24॥

(Fasting and consecration and anointing and, O king, having performed twelve years, from the state of a hero, is distinguished.)
O king, one who has undertaken fasting, consecration, and anointing for twelve years becomes distinguished from the class of heroes. (13-57-24)
दासीदासमलङ्कारान्क्षेत्राणि च गृहाणि च। ब्रह्मदेयां सुतां दत्त्वा प्राप्नोति मनुजर्षभ ॥१३-५७-२५॥
dāsīdāsamalaṅkārān kṣetrāṇi ca gṛhāṇi ca. brahmadeyāṃ sutāṃ dattvā prāpnoti manujarṣabha ॥13-57-25॥
[दासीदासमलङ्कारान् (dāsīdāsamalaṅkārān) - maid-servants, servants, ornaments; क्षेत्राणि (kṣetrāṇi) - fields; च (ca) - and; गृहाणि (gṛhāṇi) - houses; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मदेयां (brahmadeyāṃ) - dedicated to brahman (gift set aside for a Brahmin); सुतां (sutāṃ) - daughter; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - one obtains; मनुजर्षभ (manujarṣabha) - O best of men;]
(maid-servants, servants, ornaments, fields and houses and having given a daughter as a brahmadeya, one obtains, O best of men.)
O best of men, one who gives maid-servants, servants, ornaments, fields, and houses, and having given a daughter as a brahmadeya, obtains (the stated reward). (13-57-25)
क्रतुभिश्चोपवासैश्च त्रिदिवं याति भारत। लभते च चिरं स्थानं बलिपुष्पप्रदो नरः ॥१३-५७-२६॥
kratu-bhiś ca upavāsaiś ca tridivaṁ yāti bhārata। labhate ca ciraṁ sthānaṁ bali-puṣpa-prado naraḥ ॥13-57-26॥
[क्रतुभिः (kratubhiḥ) - by sacrifices; च (ca) - and; उपवासैः (upavāsaiḥ) - by fastings; च (ca) - and; त्रिदिवं (tridivam) - to heaven; याति (yāti) - goes; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; लभते (labhate) - obtains; च (ca) - and; चिरं (ciram) - long; स्थानं (sthānam) - abode; बलिपुष्पप्रदः (bali-puṣpa-pradaḥ) - giver of offerings and flowers; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(By sacrifices and by fastings, to heaven goes, O Bhārata. Obtains also a long abode, the man who gives offerings and flowers.)
O Bhārata, by sacrifices and by fastings one goes to heaven. And the man who gives offerings and flowers also attains a long-lasting abode. (13-57-26)
सुवर्णशृङ्गैस्तु विभूषितानां; गवां सहस्रस्य नरः प्रदाता। प्राप्नोति पुण्यं दिवि देवलोक; मित्येवमाहुर्मुनिदेवसङ्घाः ॥१३-५७-२७॥
suvarṇaśṛṅgais tu vibhūṣitānāṃ; gavāṃ sahasrasya naraḥ pradātā। prāpnoti puṇyaṃ divi devaloka; mity evam āhur munidevasaṅghāḥ ॥13-57-27॥

(With golden horns indeed adorned, of cows of a thousand, man giver obtains merit in heaven, the world of the gods; thus so they say assemblies of sages and gods.)
The man who gives a thousand cows adorned with golden horns obtains merit in heaven, the world of the gods; thus, so say the assemblies of sages and gods. (13-57-27)
प्रयच्छते यः कपिलां सचैलां; कांस्योपदोहां कनकाग्रशृङ्गीम्। तैस्तैर्गुणैः कामदुघास्य भूत्वा; नरं प्रदातारमुपैति सा गौः ॥१३-५७-२८॥
prayacchate yaḥ kapilāṁ sacailāṁ; kāṁsyopadohāṁ kanakāgraśṛṅgīm। taistairguṇaiḥ kāmadughāsyā bhūtvā; naraṁ pradātāramupaiti sā gauḥ ॥13-57-28॥
[प्रयच्छते (prayacchate) - gives; यः (yaḥ) - who; कपिलां (kapilām) - tawny-coloured; सचैलां (sacailām) - with covering cloth; कांस्योपदोहां (kāṁsyopadohām) - with bronze milking vessel; कनकाग्रशृङ्गीम् (kanakāgraśṛṅgīm) - with golden-tipped horns; तैस्तैर्गुणैः (taistairguṇaiḥ) - with those qualities; कामदुघा (kāmadughā) - wish-fulfilling; अस्य (asya) - his; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; नरं (naraṁ) - man (person); प्रदातारम् (pradātāram) - giver; उपैति (upaiti) - approaches; सा (sā) - she; गौः (gauḥ) - cow;]
(Who gives a tawny cow, with covering cloth, with bronze milking vessel, with gold-tipped horns, having become endowed with those qualities, the wish-fulfiller, she, the cow, having become his, approaches the giver man.)
That cow, which is tawny, covered with cloth, has a bronze milking vessel and golden-tipped horns, possessing all these qualities, becomes a wish-fulfiller and comes to the man who gives her. (13-57-28)
यावन्ति लोमानि भवन्ति धेन्वा; स्तावत्फलं प्राप्नुते गोप्रदाता। पुत्रांश्च पौत्रांश्च कुलं च सर्व; मासप्तमं तारयते परत्र ॥१३-५७-२९॥
yāvanti lomāni bhavanti dhenvā; stāvatphalaṃ prāpnute gopradātā. putrāṃś ca pautrāṃś ca kulaṃ ca sarva; māsaptamaṃ tārayate paratra ॥13-57-29॥
[यावन्ति (yāvanti) - as many as; लोमानि (lomāni) - hairs; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; धेन्वा (dhenvā) - on the cow; स्तावत्फलं (stāvatphalaṃ) - so much fruit; प्राप्नुते (prāpnute) - obtains; गोप्रदाता (gopradātā) - the giver of a cow; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; च (ca) - and; पौत्रान् (pautrān) - grandsons; च (ca) - and; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; च (ca) - and; सर्व (sarva) - all; मासप्तमं (māsaptamaṃ) - the seventh month; तारयते (tārayate) - delivers (across); परत्र (paratra) - in the hereafter;]
(As many hairs as are on the cow, so much fruit obtains the giver of a cow. Sons and grandsons and the whole family, all, for the seventh month, delivers across in the hereafter.)
The giver of a cow receives as much merit as there are hairs on the cow, and delivers his sons, grandsons, and entire family in the hereafter for seven months. (13-57-29)
सदक्षिणां काञ्चनचारुशृङ्गीं; कांस्योपदोहां द्रविणोत्तरीयाम्। धेनुं तिलानां ददतो द्विजाय; लोका वसूनां सुलभा भवन्ति ॥१३-५७-३०॥
sadakṣiṇāṃ kāñcanacāruśṛṅgīṃ; kāṃsyopadohāṃ draviṇottarīyām। dhenuṃ tilānāṃ dadato dvijāya; lokā vasūnāṃ sulabhā bhavanti ॥13-57-30॥
[सदक्षिणां (sadakṣiṇām) - with proper dakṣiṇā; काञ्चनचारुशृङ्गीं (kāñcanacāruśṛṅgīm) - with beautiful golden horns; कांस्योपदोहां (kāṃsyopadohām) - having a bronze milking vessel; द्रविणोत्तरीयाम् (draviṇottarīyām) - with an upper garment of wealth; धेनुं (dhenuṃ) - cow; तिलानां (tilānām) - of sesame seeds; ददतो (dadato) - of (one) giving; द्विजाय (dvijāya) - to a twice-born; लोका (lokā) - worlds; वसूनां (vasūnāṃ) - of the Vasus; सुलभा (sulabhā) - easy to obtain; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become;]
(With proper dakṣiṇā, with beautiful golden horns, having a bronze milking vessel, with an upper garment of wealth, a cow (together with) sesame seeds, of (one) giving to a twice-born, worlds of the Vasus easy to obtain become.)
To one who gives a cow, equipped with due dakṣiṇā, beautiful golden horns, a bronze milking vessel, and an upper garment of wealth, along with sesame seeds, to a twice-born, the worlds of the Vasus become easily attainable. (13-57-30)
स्वकर्मभिर्मानवं संनिबद्धं; तीव्रान्धकारे नरके पतन्तम्। महार्णवे नौरिव वायुयुक्ता; दानं गवां तारयते परत्र ॥१३-५७-३१॥
svakarmabhir mānavaṃ saṃnibaddhaṃ; tīvra-andhakāre narake patantam। mahārṇave nau iva vāyu-yuktā; dānaṃ gavāṃ tārayate paratra ॥13-57-31॥
[स्वकर्मभिः (svakarmabhiḥ) - by his own actions; मानवम् (mānavam) - the man; संनिबद्धम् (saṃnibaddham) - bound; तीव्रान्धकारे (tīvra-andhakāre) - in intense darkness; नरके (narake) - in hell; पतन्तम् (patantam) - falling; महार्णवे (mahārṇave) - in the great ocean; नौः (nauḥ) - boat; इव (iva) - like; वायुयुक्ता (vāyu-yuktā) - endowed with wind; दानम् (dānam) - gift; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; तारयते (tārayate) - saves; परत्र (paratra) - in the next world;]
(By his own actions, the man bound, falling into hell in intense darkness, like a boat endowed with wind in the great ocean, gift of cows saves in the next world.)
Bound by his own actions, the man who is falling into hell's intense darkness is saved in the next world by the gift of cows, just as a boat endowed with wind is saved in the great ocean. (13-57-31)
यो ब्रह्मदेयां तु ददाति कन्यां; भूमिप्रदानं च करोति विप्रे। ददाति चान्नं विधिवच्च यश्च; स लोकमाप्नोति पुरंदरस्य ॥१३-५७-३२॥
yo brahmadeyāṁ tu dadāti kanyāṁ; bhūmipradānaṁ ca karoti vipre. dadāti cānnaṁ vidhivacca yaśca; sa lokam āpnoti purandarasya ॥13-57-32॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; ब्रह्मदेयाम् (brahmadeyām) - land given to brāhmaṇas; तु (tu) - but; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; कन्याम् (kanyām) - maiden; भूमिप्रदानम् (bhūmipradānam) - gift of land; च (ca) - and; करोति (karoti) - does; विप्रे (vipre) - to a brāhmaṇa; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; च (ca) - and; अन्नम् (annam) - food; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; सः (saḥ) - he; लोकम् (lokam) - world; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; पुरंदरस्य (purandarasya) - of Purandara (Indra);]
(Who gives land suitable for brahmanas, but gives a maiden; and gives the gift of land to a brāhmaṇa; and who gives food as prescribed by the rules; he attains the world of Purandara (Indra).)
He who gives brahmadeya land, gives a maiden in marriage, gifts land to a brāhmaṇa, and gives food according to prescribed rules, attains the world of Purandara (Indra). (13-57-32)
नैवेशिकं सर्वगुणोपपन्नं; ददाति वै यस्तु नरो द्विजाय। स्वाध्यायचारित्रगुणान्विताय; तस्यापि लोकाः कुरुषूत्तरेषु ॥१३-५७-३३॥
naiveśikaṁ sarvaguṇopapannaṁ; dadāti vai yastu naro dvijāya. svādhyāyacāritraguṇānvitāya; tasyāpi lokāḥ kuruṣūttareṣu ॥13-57-33॥
[नैवेशिकं (naiveśikam) - food suitable for ritual offering; सर्वगुणोपपन्नं (sarvaguṇopapannam) - endowed with all virtues; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; वै (vai) - indeed; यस्तु (yastu) - he who; नरः (naraḥ) - man; द्विजाय (dvijāya) - to a twice-born (Brāhmaṇa); स्वाध्यायचारित्रगुणान्विताय (svādhyāyacāritraguṇānvitāya) - possessed of the virtues of self-study and conduct; तस्यापि (tasyāpi) - of him also; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; कुरुषूत्तरेषु (kuruṣūttareṣu) - among the highest of the Kurus;]
(He who gives food fit for ritual offering, endowed with all virtues, indeed, a man to a twice-born possessing the virtues of self-study and conduct — his worlds are also among the highest of the Kurus.)
Whoever gives ritual food possessed of all virtues to a twice-born person endowed with the virtues of self-study and good conduct, even he attains the highest worlds among the Kurus. (13-57-33)
धुर्यप्रदानेन गवां तथाश्वै; र्लोकानवाप्नोति नरो वसूनाम्। स्वर्गाय चाहुर्हि हिरण्यदानं; ततो विशिष्टं कनकप्रदानम् ॥१३-५७-३४॥
dhuryapradānena gavāṃ tathāśvaiḥ; lokān avāpnoti naro vasūnām. svargāya ca āhuḥ hi hiraṇyadānaṃ; tato viśiṣṭaṃ kanakapradānam ॥13-57-34॥
[धुर्यप्रदानेन (dhuryapradānena) - by the gifting of beasts of burden; गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; तथा (tathā) - and likewise; अश्वैः (aśvaiḥ) - by horses; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; वसूनाम् (vasūnām) - of riches; स्वर्गाय (svargāya) - for heaven; च (ca) - and; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; हि (hi) - indeed; हिरण्यदानं (hiraṇyadānaṃ) - gift of gold; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; विशिष्टं (viśiṣṭaṃ) - superior; कनकप्रदानम् (kanakapradānam) - gift of precious gold;]
(By the gifting of beasts of burden, of cows, and likewise by horses, a man attains worlds of riches. For heaven, indeed, they say, the gift of gold; than that, superior is the gift of precious gold.)

छत्रप्रदानेन गृहं वरिष्ठं; यानं तथोपानहसम्प्रदाने। वस्त्रप्रदानेन फलं सुरूपं; गन्धप्रदाने सुरभिर्नरः स्यात् ॥१३-५७-३५॥
chatrapradānena gṛhaṃ variṣṭhaṃ; yānaṃ tathopānahasampradāne. vastrapradānena phalaṃ surūpaṃ; gandhapradāne surabhir naraḥ syāt ॥13-57-35॥
[छत्रप्रदानेन (chatra-pradānena) - by the giving of an umbrella; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; वरिष्ठम् (variṣṭham) - very excellent; यानम् (yānam) - vehicle; तथा (tathā) - likewise; उपानहसम्प्रदाने (upānahasampradāne) - in the giving of shoes; वस्त्रप्रदानेन (vastra-pradānena) - by the giving of cloth; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; सुरूपम् (surūpam) - beautiful; गन्धप्रदाने (gandha-pradāne) - in the giving of fragrance; सुरभिः (surabhiḥ) - fragrant; नरः (naraḥ) - man; स्यात् (syāt) - becomes;]
(By the giving of an umbrella, (one obtains) a very excellent house. Vehicle likewise (is obtained) in the giving of shoes. By the giving of cloth, (one attains) beautiful fruit. In the giving of fragrance, man becomes fragrant.)
By giving an umbrella, one attains an excellent dwelling; by giving shoes, a vehicle likewise; by giving cloth, one attains beautiful rewards; by giving fragrance, a person becomes fragrant. (13-57-35)
पुष्पोपगं वाथ फलोपगं वा; यः पादपं स्पर्शयते द्विजाय। स स्त्रीसमृद्धं बहुरत्नपूर्णं; लभत्ययत्नोपगतं गृहं वै ॥१३-५७-३६॥
puṣpopagaṁ vātha phalopagaṁ vā; yaḥ pādapaṁ sparśayate dvijāya. sa strīsamṛddhaṁ bahuratnapūrṇaṁ; labhatyayatnopagataṁ gṛhaṁ vai ॥13-57-36॥
[पुष्पोपगं (puṣpopagaṁ) - with flowers attained; (having flowers); वा (vā) - or; थ (atha) - or else; फलोपगं (phalopagaṁ) - with fruits attained; (having fruits); वा (vā) - or; यः (yaḥ) - who; पादपं (pādapaṁ) - tree; स्पर्शयते (sparśayate) - touches; द्विजाय (dvijāya) - for the twice-born; (to a Brāhmaṇa); स (sa) - he; स्त्रीसमृद्धं (strī-samṛddhaṁ) - abounding in women; बहुरत्नपूर्णं (bahuratnapūrṇaṁ) - filled with many gems; लभति (labhati) - obtains; अयत्नोपगतं (ayatnopagataṁ) - come without effort; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; वै (vai) - indeed; truly;]
(With flowers attained or else with fruits attained or; who the tree touches for the twice-born; he abounding in women, filled with many gems, obtains house come without effort indeed.)
Whoever touches a tree bearing flowers or fruits for a Brāhmaṇa, he truly obtains a house filled with many gems and women, which comes effortlessly. (13-57-36)
भक्षान्नपानीयरसप्रदाता; सर्वानवाप्नोति रसान्प्रकामम्। प्रतिश्रयाच्छादनसम्प्रदाता; प्राप्नोति तानेव न संशयोऽत्र ॥१३-५७-३७॥
bhakṣānnapānīyarasapradātā; sarvān avāpnoti rasān prakāmam। pratiśrayācchādanasampradātā; prāpnoti tān eva na saṁśayo'tra ॥13-57-37॥
[भक्ष-अन्न-पानीय-रस-प्रदाता (bhakṣa-anna-pānīya-rasa-pradātā) - giver of food, cooked rice, drink, juices; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; रसान् (rasān) - juices; tastes; प्रकामम् (prakāmam) - at will; as desired; प्रतिश्रय-अच्छादन-सम्-प्रदाता (pratiśraya-acchādana-sam-pradātā) - giver of shelter and clothing; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; तान् एव (tān eva) - those indeed; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; अत्र (atra) - here; ॥१३-५७-३७॥ (॥13-57-37॥) -;]
(The giver of food, cooked rice, water, and juices attains all tastes at will. The giver of shelter and clothing obtains those indeed; not (is there) any doubt here.)
One who gives food, cooked rice, water, and juices attains all kinds of tastes as desired. The one who provides shelter and clothing likewise receives such benefits; there is no doubt about this. (13-57-37)
स्रग्धूपगन्धान्यनुलेपनानि; स्नानानि माल्यानि च मानवो यः। दद्याद्द्विजेभ्यः स भवेदरोग; स्तथाभिरूपश्च नरेन्द्रलोके ॥१३-५७-३८॥
sragdhūpagandhānyanulepanāni; snānāni mālyāni ca mānavo yaḥ। dadyāddvijebhyaḥ sa bhavedaroga; stathābhirūpaśca narendraloke ॥13-57-38॥
[स्रक् (srak) - garland; धूप (dhūpa) - incense; गन्धानि (gandhāni) - scents; अनुलेपनानि (anulepanāni) - ointments; स्नानानि (snānāni) - baths; माल्यानि (mālyāni) - wreaths; च (ca) - and; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - human being; यः (yaḥ) - who; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; द्विजेभ्यः (dvijebhyaḥ) - to the twice-born; सः (saḥ) - he; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; अरोगः (arogaḥ) - free from disease; तथा (tathā) - thus; also; अभिरूपश्च (abhirūpaśca) - and handsome; नरेन्द्रलोके (narendraloke) - in the world of kings;]
(Garlands, incense, scents, ointments, baths, wreaths and— the human being who should give (these) to the twice-born, he becomes free from disease and also handsome in the world of kings.)
Whoever gives garlands, incense, scents, ointments, baths, and wreaths to the twice-born, that person becomes free from disease and also handsome in the world of kings. (13-57-38)
बीजैरशून्यं शयनैरुपेतं; दद्याद्गृहं यः पुरुषो द्विजाय। पुण्याभिरामं बहुरत्नपूर्णं; लभत्यधिष्ठानवरं स राजन् ॥१३-५७-३९॥
bījair aśūnyaṃ śayanair upetaṃ; dadyād gṛhaṃ yaḥ puruṣo dvijāya. puṇyābhirāmaṃ bahuratnapūrṇaṃ; labhaty adhiṣṭhānavaraṃ sa rājan ॥13-57-39॥
[बीजैः (bījaiḥ) - with seeds; अशून्यं (aśūnyaṃ) - not empty; शयनैः (śayanaiḥ) - with beds; उपेतं (upetaṃ) - furnished; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; गृहं (gṛham) - house; यः (yaḥ) - who; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; द्विजाय (dvijāya) - to a brāhmaṇa; पुण्याभिरामं (puṇyābhirāmaṃ) - delightful by virtue (auspicious, holy, beautiful); बहु (bahu) - much; रत्न (ratna) - gem; पूर्णं (pūrṇaṃ) - filled; लभते (labhate) - obtains; अधिष्ठानवरं (adhiṣṭhānavaram) - excellent seat; सः (saḥ) - he; राजन् (rājan) - O king;]
(A house not empty of seeds, furnished with beds, which a man gives to a brāhmaṇa; delightful by virtue, filled with many gems; he obtains the excellent seat, O king.)
O king, a man who gives to a brāhmaṇa a house furnished with beds and seeds, delightful and filled with many gems, attains an excellent abode. (13-57-39)
सुगन्धचित्रास्तरणोपपन्नं; दद्यान्नरो यः शयनं द्विजाय। रूपान्वितां पक्षवतीं मनोज्ञां; भार्यामयत्नोपगतां लभेत्सः ॥१३-५७-४०॥
sugandhacitrastr̥aṇopapannaṃ; dadyān naro yaḥ śayanaṃ dvijāya। rūpānvitāṃ pakṣavatīṃ manojñāṃ; bhāryāmayatnopagatāṃ labhetsaḥ॥13-57-40॥
[सुगन्ध-चित्र-आस्तरण-उपपन्नं (sugandha-citra-āstaraṇa-upapannaṃ) - furnished with fragrant and variegated bedding; दद्याञ् (dadyān) - should give; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; यः (yaḥ) - who; शयनं (śayanam) - bed; द्विजाय (dvijāya) - to a twice-born (Brahmin); रूपान्वितां (rūpānvitām) - endowed with beauty; पक्षवतीं (pakṣavatīm) - having wings; मनोज्ञां (manojñām) - delightful; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; अयत्नोपगतां (ayatnopagatām) - obtained without effort; लभेत् (labhet) - shall obtain; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Furnished with fragrant and variegated bedding, a man who gives a bed to a twice-born, he shall obtain a wife endowed with beauty, having wings, delightful and obtained without effort.)
He who gives to a Brahmin a bed furnished with fragrant and beautiful bedding will obtain a delightful, beautiful, splendid wife, effortlessly gained. (13-57-40)
पितामहस्यानुचरो वीरशायी भवेन्नरः। नाधिकं विद्यते तस्मादित्याहुः परमर्षयः ॥१३-५७-४१॥
pitāmahasyānucaro vīraśāyī bhaven naraḥ। nādhikaṃ vidyate tasmād ity āhuḥ paramarṣayaḥ॥13-57-41॥
[पितामहस्य (pitāmahasya) - of the Grandfather (Brahmā); अनुचरः (anucaraḥ) - attendant; follower; वीरशायी (vīraśāyī) - one who lies on the hero's bed (the bed of battle); भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; becomes; नरः (naraḥ) - man; न (na) - not; अधिकं (adhikaṃ) - greater; superior; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - than that; इति (iti) - so; thus; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; परमर्षयः (paramarṣayaḥ) - supreme sages;]
(A man who is the attendant of the Grandfather, who lies on the hero's bed, may become; nothing greater than that exists, thus say the supreme sages.)
A man who serves as attendant to the Grandfather and dies a hero's death in battle can attain that state; nothing is greater than that, say the supreme sages. (13-57-41)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रीतात्मा कुरुनन्दनः। नाश्रमेऽरोचयद्वासं वीरमार्गाभिकाङ्क्षया ॥१३-५७-४२॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā prītātmā kurunandanaḥ। nāśrame'rocayadvāsaṃ vīramārgābhikāṅkṣayā॥13-57-42॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तद्वचनम् (tadvacanam) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; प्रीतात्मा (prītātmā) - with delighted mind; कुरुनन्दनः (kurunandanaḥ) - descendant of Kuru; न (na) - not; आश्रमॆ (āśrame) - in the hermitage; अरोचयत् (arocayat) - he pleased; वासम् (vāsam) - dwelling; वीरमार्गाभिकाङ्क्षया (vīramārgābhikāṅkṣayā) - with desire for the hero's path;]
(Of him those words having heard, with delighted mind, the descendant of Kuru did not find dwelling in the hermitage pleasing, with desire for the hero's path.)
Having heard those words of his, the delighted son of the Kurus no longer found dwelling in the hermitage pleasing, desiring instead the warrior's path. (13-57-42)
ततो युधिष्ठिरः प्राह पाण्डवान्भरतर्षभ। पितामहस्य यद्वाक्यं तद्वो रोचत्विति प्रभुः ॥१३-५७-४३॥
tato yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prāha pāṇḍavān bharatarṣabha। pitāmahasya yad vākyaṃ tad vo rocatv iti prabhuḥ ॥13-57-43॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; प्राह (prāha) - said; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - to the Pāṇḍavas; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; पितामहस्य (pitāmahasya) - of (the) grandsire; यत् (yad) - which; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - statement; तत् (tat) - that; वः (vaḥ) - to you; रोचत् (rocat) - be pleasing; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(Then Yudhiṣṭhira said to the Pāṇḍavas, O best of the Bharatas: "Of the grandsire, which statement, that to you be pleasing," thus the lord (said). (13-57-43))
Then Yudhiṣṭhira said to the Pāṇḍavas, O best of the Bharatas: "Let that statement of the grandsire be agreeable to you," said the lord. (13-57-43)
ततस्तु पाण्डवाः सर्वे द्रौपदी च यशस्विनी। युधिष्ठिरस्य तद्वाक्यं बाढमित्यभ्यपूजयन् ॥१३-५७-४४॥
tatastu pāṇḍavāḥ sarve draupadī ca yaśasvinī। yudhiṣṭhirasya tadvākyaṃ bāḍhamityabhyapūjayan ॥13-57-44॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - however; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the illustrious one; युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhiṣṭhira; तद्वाक्यं (tadvākyam) - that speech; बाढम् (bāḍham) - certainly; इति (iti) - thus; अभ्यपूजयन् (abhyapūjayan) - they honored;]
(Then, however, all the Pāṇḍavas and Draupadī, the illustrious one, Yudhiṣṭhira's that speech certainly thus they honored.)
Then, all the Pāṇḍavas along with the illustrious Draupadī honored Yudhiṣṭhira's words, saying "certainly". (13-57-44)
