दानं यज्ञक्रिया चेह किं स्वित्प्रेत्य महाफलम्। कस्य ज्यायः फलं प्रोक्तं कीदृशेभ्यः कथं कदा ॥१३-६०-१॥
dānaṃ yajñakriyā ca iha kiṃ svit pretya mahāphalam। kasya jyāyaḥ phalaṃ proktaṃ kīdṛśebhyaḥ kathaṃ kadā॥13-60-1॥
[दानं (dānam) - gift; यज्ञक्रिया (yajñakriyā) - sacrifice-rite; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; किं (kiṃ) - what; स्वित् (svit) - indeed; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; महाफलम् (mahāphalam) - great result; कस्य (kasya) - whose; ज्यायः (jyāyaḥ) - greater; फलम् (phalam) - result; प्रोक्तं (proktaṃ) - is said; कीदृशेभ्यः (kīdṛśebhyaḥ) - than which kind (of acts); कथं (kathaṃ) - how; कदा (kadā) - when;]
(Gift, sacrifice-rite and here what indeed after death (has the) great result; whose greater result is said, than which kind (of acts), how, when.)
Which among gift and sacrifice here yields the greatest result after death? Whose result is declared greater, than which kind of acts, how, and when? (13-60-1)
एतदिच्छामि विज्ञातुं याथातथ्येन भारत। विद्वञ्जिज्ञासमानाय दानधर्मान्प्रचक्ष्व मे ॥१३-६०-२॥
etadicchāmi vijñātuṃ yāthātathyena bhārata. vidvanjijñāsamānāya dānadharmānpracakṣva me ॥13-60-2॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; विज्ञातुम् (vijñātum) - to know; याथातथ्येन (yāthātathyena) - according to the reality; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; विद्वन् (vidvan) - O learned one; जिज्ञासमानाय (jijñāsamānāya) - to the one desiring to know; दानधर्मान् (dānadharmān) - the dharmas (rules) of giving; प्रचक्ष्व (pracakṣva) - tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(This I wish to know according to the reality, O Bhārata. O learned one, tell (describe) to me, who desires to know, the dharmas of giving.)
O Bhārata, I wish to know this in its true nature. O wise one, tell me the rules of giving, for I desire to understand them. (13-60-2)
अन्तर्वेद्यां च यद्दत्तं श्रद्धया चानृशंस्यतः। किं स्विन्निःश्रेयसं तात तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१३-६०-३॥
antarvedyāṃ ca yad dattaṃ śraddhayā ca anṛśaṃsyataḥ। kiṃ svin niḥśreyasaṃ tāta tan me brūhi pitāmaha ॥13-60-3॥
[अन्तर्वेद्यां (antarvedyām) - on the central sacrificial altar; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - what; दत्तं (dattaṃ) - is given; श्रद्धया (śraddhayā) - with faith; च (ca) - and; अनृशंस्यतः (anṛśaṃsyataḥ) - from one who is compassionate; किं (kiṃ) - what; स्विन् (svin) - indeed; निःश्रेयसं (niḥśreyasaṃ) - the supreme good; तात (tāta) - O dear one; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(On the central sacrificial altar and what is given with faith and from one who is compassionate, what indeed is the supreme good, O dear one, that to me tell, O grandsire.)
O grandsire, please tell me, O dear one, what is the supreme good of what is given with faith and compassion on the central sacrificial altar. (13-60-3)

रौद्रं कर्म क्षत्रियस्य सततं तात वर्तते। तस्य वैतानिकं कर्म दानं चैवेह पावनम् ॥१३-६०-४॥
raudraṃ karma kṣatriyasya satataṃ tāta vartate। tasya vaitānikaṃ karma dānaṃ caiveha pāvanam ॥13-60-4॥
[रौद्रं (raudraṃ) - terrible; कर्म (karma) - action; क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - of the kṣatriya; सततं (satataṃ) - always; तात (tāta) - O dear one; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; तस्य (tasya) - his; वैतानिकं (vaitānikaṃ) - related to Vedic ritual; कर्म (karma) - action; दानं (dānaṃ) - gift; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; इह (iha) - here; पावनम् (pāvanam) - purifying;]
(Terrible action of the kṣatriya always, O dear one, exists. Of him, Vedic ritual action and gift indeed here (are) purifying.)
O dear one, terrible actions always belong to the kṣatriya; but for him, Vedic ritual actions and giving gifts here are truly purifying. (13-60-4)
न तु पापकृतां राज्ञां प्रतिगृह्णन्ति साधवः। एतस्मात्कारणाद्यज्ञैर्यजेद्राजाप्तदक्षिणैः ॥१३-६०-५॥
na tu pāpakṛtāṃ rājñāṃ pratigṛhṇanti sādhavaḥ. etasmātkāraṇādyajñairyajedrājāptadakṣiṇaiḥ ॥13-60-5॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; पापकृताम् (pāpakṛtām) - of evil-doing; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; प्रतिगृह्णन्ति (pratigṛhṇanti) - accept; साधवः (sādhavaḥ) - the virtuous; एतस्मात् (etasmāt) - from this; कारणात् (kāraṇāt) - reason; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; यजेत् (yajet) - should worship; राजा (rājā) - the king; आप्तदक्षिणैः (āptadakṣiṇaiḥ) - with duly-acquired gifts (dakṣiṇāḥ);]
(But the virtuous do not accept of evil-doing kings; from this reason, by sacrifices, should worship (the) king with duly-acquired gifts.)
But the virtuous do not accept gifts from wicked kings. For this reason, the king should perform sacrifices with gifts that have been rightly acquired. (13-60-5)
अथ चेत्प्रतिगृह्णीयुर्दद्यादहरहर्नृपः। श्रद्धामास्थाय परमां पावनं ह्येतदुत्तमम् ॥१३-६०-६॥
atha cet pratigṛhṇīyur dadyād ahar ahar nṛpaḥ। śraddhām āsthāya paramām pāvanaṃ hy etad uttamam॥13-60-6॥
[अथ (atha) - then; चेत् (cet) - if; प्रतिगृह्णीयुः (pratigṛhṇīyuḥ) - they accept; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; अहर् अहः (ahar ahar) - day by day; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; श्रद्धाम् (śraddhām) - faith; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having established; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; पावनम् (pāvanam) - purifying; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
(Then if they accept, the king should give day by day, having established supreme faith; for this (is) indeed purifying, excellent.)
If they accept, then the king should give every day, with supreme faith; for this is indeed most purifying and excellent. (13-60-6)
ब्राह्मणांस्तर्पयेद्द्रव्यैस्ततो यज्ञे यतव्रतः। मैत्रान्साधून्वेदविदः शीलवृत्ततपोन्वितान् ॥१३-६०-७॥
brāhmaṇāṁstarpayed dravyais tato yajñe yatavrataḥ। maitrān sādhūn vedavidaḥ śīlavṛttatapōnvitān॥ 13-60-7॥
[ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; (the priests;) तर्पयेत् (tarpayet) - should satisfy; (propitiate;) द्रव्यैः (dravyaiḥ) - with materials; (with offerings;) ततः (tataḥ) - then; (after that;) यज्ञे (yajñe) - in (the) sacrifice; (at the ritual;) यतव्रतः (yatavrataḥ) - one who is self-restrained, observant of vows; (the disciplined;) मैत्रान् (maitrān) - friendly ones; (those with affection;) साधून् (sādhūn) - virtuous ones; (good people;) वेदविदः (vedavidaḥ) - knowers of the Veda; (learned in the Veda;) शीलवृत्ततपोन्वितान् (śīla-vṛtta-tapah-anvitān) - endowed with character, conduct, and austerity; (having virtue, right conduct, austerity;);]
(Brāhmaṇas should be satisfied with materials; then, in the sacrifice, one who is self-restrained; friendly, virtuous, knowers of the Veda, endowed with character, conduct, and austerity.)
He should satisfy the Brāhmaṇas with offerings; then, during the sacrifice, being self-restrained, (he should honor) friendly and virtuous persons who are learned in the Veda, endowed with good character, conduct, and austerity. (13-60-7)
यत्ते तेन करिष्यन्ति कृतं तेन भविष्यति। यज्ञान्साधय साधुभ्यः स्वाद्वन्नान्दक्षिणावतः ॥१३-६०-८॥
yatte tena kariṣyanti kṛtaṃ tena bhaviṣyati। yajñān sādhaya sādhubhyaḥ svādvannān dakṣiṇāvataḥ ॥13-60-8॥
[यत् (yat) - what; ते (te) - for you; तेन (tena) - by him; करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - they will do; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; तेन (tena) - by him; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - it will become; यज्ञान् (yajñān) - sacrifices; साधय (sādhaya) - accomplish; साधुभ्यः (sādhubhyaḥ) - for the good people; स्वाद्वन्नान् (svādvannān) - delicious foods; दक्षिणावतः (dakṣiṇāvataḥ) - together with gifts;]
(What for you by him they will do, done by him it will become. Accomplish the sacrifices for the good people, with delicious foods together with gifts.)
Whatever is done for you by him, that will happen. Perform the sacrifices for the good people, offering delicious foods along with gifts. (13-60-8)
इष्टं दत्तं च मन्येथा आत्मानं दानकर्मणा। पूजयेथा यायजूकांस्तवाप्यंशो भवेद्यथा ॥१३-६०-९॥
iṣṭaṃ dattaṃ ca manyethā ātmānaṃ dānakarmaṇā। pūjayethā yāyajūkāṃstava apyaṃśo bhaved yathā ॥13-60-9॥
[इष्टं (iṣṭam) - sacrificial offering; दत्तं (dattam) - gift; च (ca) - and; मnyeथा (manyeṭhā) - you should consider; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - yourself; दानकर्मणा (dānakarmaṇā) - by the act of giving; पूजयेथा (pūjayethā) - you should honor; यायजूकान् (yāyajūkān) - priests; तव (tava) - your; अपि (api) - also; अंशः (aṃśaḥ) - portion; भवेत् (bhavet) - should become; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(Sacrificial offering, gift and, you should consider yourself by the act of giving; you should honor priests; your also portion should become just as.)
You should consider sacrifices and gifts as your own act through giving; you should also honor the priests, so that your share will indeed arise just as proper. (13-60-9)
प्रजावतो भरेथाश्च ब्राह्मणान्बहुभारिणः। प्रजावांस्तेन भवति यथा जनयिता तथा ॥१३-६०-१०॥
prajāvato bharethāś ca brāhmaṇān bahubhāriṇaḥ। prajāvāṃs tena bhavati yathā janayitā tathā ॥13-60-10॥
[प्रजावतः (prajāvataḥ) - of those possessing offspring; भरेथाश्च (bharethāś ca) - you should support, and; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brāhmaṇas; बहुभारिणः (bahubhāriṇaḥ) - bearing many burdens; प्रजावांश् (prajāvāṃs) - one possessing offspring; तेन (tena) - by that (support); भवति (bhavati) - becomes; यथा (yathā) - just as; जनयिता (janayitā) - one who begets; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(Of those possessing offspring, you should support the Brāhmaṇas bearing many burdens; one possessing offspring, by that, becomes, just as one who begets, so.)
You should support Brāhmaṇas who have many burdens and possess offspring; by doing so, one becomes (the cause of) progeny, just as a begetter does. (13-60-10)
यावतो वै साधुधर्मान्सन्तः संवर्तयन्त्युत। सर्वे ते चापि भर्तव्या नरा ये बहुभारिणः ॥१३-६०-११॥
yāvato vai sādhu-dharmān santaḥ saṁvartayanty uta। sarve te cāpi bhartavyā narā ye bahu-bhāriṇaḥ ॥13-60-11॥
[यावतः (yāvataḥ) - as many as; however many; yet; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; certainly; साधुधर्मान् (sādhu-dharmān) - virtuous duties; righteous qualities; merits; सन्तः (santaḥ) - the good ones; the virtuous ones; संवर्तयन्ति (saṁvartayanti) - perform; carry out; maintain; उत (uta) - and; moreover; also; सर्वे (sarve) - all; each; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; even; भर्तव्या (bhartavyā) - are to be supported; should be maintained; नराः (narāḥ) - men; people; ये (ye) - who; बहुभारिणः (bahu-bhāriṇaḥ) - carrying many burdens; bearing much weight;]
(However many indeed virtuous duties the good ones perform and also, all they indeed are to be maintained—the men who bear many burdens.)
All those men who perform virtuous duties and bear great burdens are to be supported.
समृद्धः सम्प्रयच्छस्व ब्राह्मणेभ्यो युधिष्ठिर। धेनूरनडुहोऽन्नानि च्छत्रं वासांस्युपानहौ ॥१३-६०-१२॥
samṛddhaḥ samprayacchasva brāhmaṇebhyo yudhiṣṭhira। dhenūraṇaḍuho'nnāni chhatraṃ vāsāṃsyupānahau ॥13-60-12॥
[समृद्धः (samṛddhaḥ) - prosperous one; सम्प्रयच्छस्व (samprayacchasva) - bestow thou; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - unto the Brāhmaṇas; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; धेनूः (dhenūḥ) - cows; अनडुहः (aṇaḍuhaḥ) - bulls; अन्नानि (annāni) - grains (food); छत्रम् (chhatram) - umbrella; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - garments; उपानहौ (upānahau) - sandals;]
(Prosperous one, bestow unto the Brāhmaṇas, O Yudhiṣṭhira, cows, bulls, grains, umbrella, garments, sandals.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, being prosperous, give to the Brāhmaṇas cows, bulls, food, an umbrella, garments, and sandals. (13-60-12)
आज्यानि यजमानेभ्यस्तथान्नाद्यानि भारत। अश्ववन्ति च यानानि वेश्मानि शयनानि च ॥१३-६०-१३॥
ājyāni yajamānebhyaḥ tathā annādyāni bhārata। aśvavanti ca yānāni veśmāni śayanāni ca॥13-60-13॥
[आज्यानि (ājyāni) - offerings of clarified butter; यजमानेभ्यः (yajamānebhyaḥ) - to the sacrificers; तथा (tathā) - as well; अन्नाद्यानि (annādyāni) - food and eatables; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अश्ववन्ति (aśvavanti) - horsed (having horses); च (ca) - and; यानानि (yānāni) - vehicles; वेश्मानि (veśmāni) - houses; शयनानि (śayanāni) - beds; च (ca) - and;]
(Offerings of clarified butter to the sacrificers as well as food and eatables, O Bhārata; vehicles with horses and houses and beds and.)
O Bhārata, offerings of clarified butter were given to the sacrificers, as well as food and eatables; there were also horse-drawn vehicles, houses, and beds. (13-60-13)
एते देया व्युष्टिमन्तो लघूपायाश्च भारत। अजुगुप्सांश्च विज्ञाय ब्राह्मणान्वृत्तिकर्शितान् ॥१३-६०-१४॥
ete deyā vyuṣṭimanto laghūpāyāś ca bhārata। ajugupsāṃś ca vijñāya brāhmaṇān vṛtti-karśitān ॥13-60-14॥
[एते (ete) - these; देया (deyā) - to be given; व्युष्टिमन्तः (vyuṣṭimantaḥ) - having abundance; लघूपायाः (laghūpāyāḥ) - with meager means; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अजुगुप्सान् (ajugupsān) - not despicable; च (ca) - and; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having known; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; वृत्तिकर्शितान् (vṛtti-karśitān) - distressed for livelihood;]
(These, to be given, having abundance, with meager means, and, O Bhārata; not despicable, and, having known, Brāhmaṇas, distressed for livelihood.)
O Bhārata, having recognized Brāhmaṇas who are not despicable, who are distressed for livelihood, and who have meager means or abundance, these should be given (gifts). (13-60-14)
उपच्छन्नं प्रकाशं वा वृत्त्या तान्प्रतिपादय। राजसूयाश्वमेधाभ्यां श्रेयस्तत्क्षत्रियान्प्रति ॥१३-६०-१५॥
upacchannaṃ prakāśaṃ vā vṛttyā tān pratipādaya। rājasūyāśvamedhābhyāṃ śreyas tat kṣatriyān prati ॥13-60-15॥
[उपच्छन्नं (upacchannam) - concealed; प्रकाशं (prakāśam) - manifest; वा (vā) - or; वृत्त्या (vṛttyā) - by conduct; तान् (tān) - those; प्रतिपादय (pratipādaya) - teach; राजसूयाश्वमेधाभ्यां (rājasūyāśvamedhābhyām) - by the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha (sacrifices); श्रेयः (śreyas) - highest good; तत् (tat) - that; क्षत्रियान् (kṣatriyān) - kṣatriyas; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Concealed or manifest, by conduct, teach those. By the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha, the highest good, that towards kṣatriyas.)
Whether concealed or manifest, teach them by conduct. Regarding kṣatriyas, their highest good is through the Rājasūya and Aśvamedha (sacrifices). (13-60-15)
एवं पापैर्विमुक्तस्त्वं पूतः स्वर्गमवाप्स्यसि। स्रंसयित्वा पुनः कोशं यद्राष्ट्रं पालयिष्यसि ॥१३-६०-१६॥
evaṁ pāpairvimuktastvaṁ pūtaḥ svargamavāpsyasi। sraṁsayitvā punaḥ kośaṁ yadrāṣṭraṁ pālayiṣyasi॥13-60-16॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; पापैः (pāpaiḥ) - by sins; विमुक्तः (vimuktaḥ) - freed; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; पूतः (pūtaḥ) - purified; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will attain; स्रंसयित्वा (sraṁsayitvā) - having drained; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; कोशं (kośam) - the treasury; यत् (yat) - which; राष्ट्रं (rāṣṭram) - kingdom; पालयिष्यसि (pālayiṣyasi) - you will protect;]
(Thus, by sins freed you, purified, heaven will attain. Having drained again the treasury, which kingdom you will protect.)
Thus, being freed from sins, you will become purified and attain heaven. After draining out the treasury, you will again protect the kingdom. (13-60-16)
ततश्च ब्रह्मभूयस्त्वमवाप्स्यसि धनानि च। आत्मनश्च परेषां च वृत्तिं संरक्ष भारत ॥१३-६०-१७॥
tataś ca brahmabhūyas tvam avāpsyasi dhanāni ca। ātmanaś ca pareṣāṃ ca vṛttiṃ saṃrakṣa bhārata॥13-60-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मभूयः (brahmabhūyaḥ) - the state of absorbing into Brahman; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - will attain; धनानि (dhanāni) - riches; च (ca) - and; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of yourself; च (ca) - and; परेषां (pareṣām) - of others; च (ca) - and; वृत्तिं (vṛttim) - livelihood; संरक्ष (saṃrakṣa) - protect; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then and the state of Brahman you will attain and riches; of yourself and of others and livelihood protect, O Bhārata.)
Then, you will attain the state of Brahman and riches; protect the livelihood of yourself and of others, O Bhārata. (13-60-17)
पुत्रवच्चापि भृत्यान्स्वान्प्रजाश्च परिपालय। योगक्षेमश्च ते नित्यं ब्राह्मणेष्वस्तु भारत ॥१३-६०-१८॥
putravaccāpi bhṛtyān svān prajāḥ ca paripālaya। yogakṣemaś ca te nityaṃ brāhmaṇeṣu astu bhārata ॥13-60-18॥
[पुत्रवत् (putravat) - like a son; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भृत्यान् (bhṛtyān) - servants; स्वान् (svān) - your own; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; च (ca) - and; परिपालय (paripālaya) - protect; योगक्षेमः (yogakṣemaḥ) - acquisition and preservation; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - for you; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - among Brahmins; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata);]
(Like a son and also your own servants and subjects, protect. Acquisition and preservation and for you always among Brahmins let it be, O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata) (13-60-18))
O Bhārata, protect your servants and subjects just as you would a son. May acquisition and preservation always be with you among Brahmins. (13-60-18)
अरक्षितारं हर्तारं विलोप्तारमदायकम्। तं स्म राजकलिं हन्युः प्रजाः सम्भूय निर्घृणम् ॥१३-६०-१९॥
arakṣitāraṁ hartāraṁ viloptāramadāyakam। taṁ sma rājakaliṁ hanyuḥ prajāḥ sambhūya nirghṛṇam ॥13-60-19॥
[अरक्षितारं (arakṣitāram) - one who does not protect; हर्तारं (hartāram) - one who steals; विलोप्तारम् (viloptāram) - one who destroys; अदायकम् (adāyakam) - one who does not give (what is due); तं (taṁ) - that (person); स्म (sma) - indeed; राजकलिं (rājakalim) - a royal wrongdoer (evil king); हन्युः (hanyuḥ) - should kill; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; सम्भूय (sambhūya) - having assembled; निर्घृणम् (nirghṛṇam) - pitiless (cruel);]
(One who does not protect, one who steals, one who destroys, one who does not give (what is due)—that indeed royal wrongdoer, the subjects, having assembled, pitiless, should kill.)
The subjects, having assembled, should pitilessly kill that royal wrongdoer who does not protect, who steals, who destroys, and who does not give (what is due). (13-60-19)
अहं वो रक्षितेत्युक्त्वा यो न रक्षति भूमिपः। स संहत्य निहन्तव्यः श्वेव सोन्माद आतुरः ॥१३-६०-२०॥
ahaṃ vo rakṣiteti uktvā yaḥ na rakṣati bhūmipaḥ। saṃ saṃhatya nihantavyaḥ śveva sa unmada āturaḥ॥13-60-20॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; वः (vo) - you (plural); रक्षितेति (rakṣiteti) - "I will protect" thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; रक्षति (rakṣati) - protects; भूमिपः (bhūmipaḥ) - king; स (sa) - he; संहत्य (saṃhatya) - having united; निहन्तव्यः (nihantavyaḥ) - is to be slain; श्वेव (śveva) - even tomorrow; सोन्माद (sa unmada) - with madness; आतुरः (āturaḥ) - afflicted;]
(I you "I will protect" thus having spoken who not protects king, he having united is to be slain even tomorrow, with madness afflicted.)
The king who, having said to you "I will protect," does not protect, he, even if afflicted with madness, should be slain collectively, even as early as tomorrow. (13-60-20)
पापं कुर्वन्ति यत्किञ्चित्प्रजा राज्ञा ह्यरक्षिताः। चतुर्थं तस्य पापस्य राजा भारत विन्दति ॥१३-६०-२१॥
pāpaṃ kurvanti yatkiñcitprajā rājñā hyarakṣitāḥ। caturthaṃ tasya pāpasya rājā bhārata vindati॥13-60-21॥

(Sin they do whatever anything subjects by the king indeed unprotected. A fourth part of that sin the king O Bhārata obtains.)
O Bhārata, of whatever sins the unprotected subjects commit, the king obtains a fourth part. (13-60-21)
अप्याहुः सर्वमेवेति भूयोऽर्धमिति निश्चयः। चतुर्थं मतमस्माकं मनोः श्रुत्वानुशासनम्॥१३-६०-२२॥

जीवन्तं त्वानुजीवन्तु प्रजाः सर्वा युधिष्ठिर। पर्जन्यमिव भूतानि महाद्रुममिव द्विजाः ॥१३-६०-२४॥
jīvantaṃ tvānujīvantu prajāḥ sarvā yudhiṣṭhira। parjanyamiva bhūtāni mahādrumamiva dvijāḥ ॥13-60-24॥

(Living you, may all creatures subsist, O Yudhishthira; like beings (subsist) on the rain-cloud, like twice-born (subsist) on the great tree.)
May all creatures live by you who are living, O Yudhishthira, just as beings live by the rain-cloud and the twice-born by the great tree. (13-60-24)
कुबेरमिव रक्षांसि शतक्रतुमिवामराः। ज्ञातयस्त्वानुजीवन्तु सुहृदश्च परन्तप ॥१३-६०-२५॥
kuberam iva rakṣāṃsi śatakratum ivāmarāḥ। jñātayas tv ānujīvantu suhṛdaś ca parantapa ॥13-60-25॥
[कुबेरम् (kuberam) - Kubera (the lord of wealth); इव (iva) - like; रक्षांसि (rakṣāṃsi) - demons; शतक्रतुम् (śatakratum) - Indra (having performed a hundred sacrifices); इव (iva) - like; अमराः (amarāḥ) - immortals; ज्ञातयः (jñātayaḥ) - relatives; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनुजीवन्तु (anujīvantu) - may live after; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; च (ca) - and; परन्तप (parantapa) - O afflicter of foes;]
(Like the demons (attend upon) Kubera, like the immortals (attend upon) Indra, may your relatives and friends live after you, O afflicter of foes.)
May your relatives and friends live long after you, O afflicter of foes, just as the demons serve Kubera and the immortals serve Indra. (13-60-25)
