केन तुष्यन्ति ते सद्यस्तुष्टाः किं प्रदिशन्त्युत। शंस मे तन्महाबाहो फलं पुण्यकृतं महत् ॥१३-६२-२॥
kena tuṣyanti te sadyastuṣṭāḥ kiṁ pradiśantyuta. śaṁsa me tanmahābāho phalaṁ puṇyakṛtaṁ mahat ॥13-62-2॥

O mighty-armed one, by what are those who are immediately satisfied made happy? What do they indicate, or tell me about that great fruit of righteous action. (13-62-2)
दत्तं किं फलवद्राजन्निह लोके परत्र च। भवतः श्रोतुमिच्छामि तन्मे विस्तरतो वद ॥१३-६२-३॥
dattaṃ kiṃ phalavadrājann iha loke paratra ca। bhavataḥ śrotum icchāmi tan me vistarato vada॥13-62-3॥

O king, I desire to hear from you what kind of giving is fruitful, both in this world and the next; therefore, tell me that in detail. (13-62-3)

O Bhārata, listen as I tell you what the divine-sighted Nārada said to me when he was formerly questioned on this matter. (13-62-4)

अन्नमेव प्रशंसन्ति देवाः सर्षिगणाः पुरा। लोकतन्त्रं हि यज्ञाश्च सर्वमन्ने प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥१३-६२-५॥
annam eva praśaṁsanti devāḥ saṛṣigaṇāḥ purā। lokatantraṁ hi yajñāś ca sarvam anne pratiṣṭhitam ॥13-62-5॥

The gods along with groups of sages formerly praised only food; for the order of the world and all sacrifices are established in food. (13-62-5)
अन्नेन सदृशं दानं न भूतं न भविष्यति। तस्मादन्नं विशेषेण दातुमिच्छन्ति मानवाः ॥१३-६२-६॥
annena sadṛśaṃ dānaṃ na bhūtaṃ na bhaviṣyati। tasmād annaṃ viśeṣeṇa dātum icchanti mānavāḥ ॥13-62-6॥

There has not been, nor will there be, a gift equal to food. Therefore, humans especially desire to give food. (13-62-6)
अन्नमूर्जस्करं लोके प्राणाश्चान्ने प्रतिष्ठिताः। अन्नेन धार्यते सर्वं विश्वं जगदिदं प्रभो ॥१३-६२-७॥
annam ūrjaskaraṃ loke prāṇāś cānne pratiṣṭhitāḥ। annena dhāryate sarvaṃ viśvaṃ jagad idaṃ prabho ॥13-62-7॥

(Food producing strength in the world, vital energies are established in food. By food is supported all the universe, this world, O Lord.)
O Lord, food that produces strength in the world; vital energies are established in food. All this universe, this world, is sustained by food. (13-62-7)
अन्नाद्गृहस्था लोकेऽस्मिन्भिक्षवस्तत एव च। अन्नात्प्रभवति प्राणः प्रत्यक्षं नात्र संशयः ॥१३-६२-८॥
annād-gṛhasthā loke'smin bhikṣavas-tata eva ca। annāt prabhavati prāṇaḥ pratyakṣaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ॥13-62-8॥
[अन्नात् (annāt) - from food; गृहस्था (gṛhasthāḥ) - householders; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; भिक्षवः (bhikṣavaḥ) - mendicants; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अन्नात् (annāt) - from food; प्रभवति (prabhavati) - arises; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ) - life-breath; प्रत्यक्षम् (pratyakṣam) - manifestly; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(From food, householders in this world and mendicants indeed and; from food arises life-breath, manifestly, here not doubt.)
In this world, both householders and mendicants depend on food; from food, life-breath arises — this is manifest, there is no doubt about it. (13-62-8)
कुटुम्बं पीडयित्वापि ब्राह्मणाय महात्मने। दातव्यं भिक्षवे चान्नमात्मनो भूतिमिच्छता ॥१३-६२-९॥
kuṭumbaṃ pīḍayitvāpi brāhmaṇāya mahātmane. dātavyaṃ bhikṣave cānnam ātmano bhūtim icchatā ॥13-62-9॥
[कुटुम्बं (kuṭumbaṃ) - family; पीडयित्वा (pīḍayitvā) - having caused distress; अपि (api) - even; ब्राह्मणाय (brāhmaṇāya) - to the Brāhmaṇa; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled one; दातव्यं (dātavyam) - should be given; भिक्षवे (bhikṣave) - to the beggar; च (ca) - and; अन्नम् (annam) - food; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - by oneself; भूतिम् (bhūtim) - welfare; इच्छता (icchatā) - desiring;]
(Even having distressed the family, food should be given to the Brāhmaṇa, the great-souled one, and to the beggar, by one who desires one's own welfare.)
One who desires his own welfare should give food, even by distressing his family, to the Brāhmaṇa, the great-souled one, and to the beggar. (13-62-9)
ब्राह्मणायाभिरूपाय यो दद्यादन्नमर्थिने। निदधाति निधिं श्रेष्ठं पारलौकिकमात्मनः ॥१३-६२-१०॥
brāhmaṇāyābhirūpāya yo dadyād annam arthine। nidadhāti nidhiṃ śreṣṭhaṃ pāralaukikam ātmanaḥ॥13-62-10॥
[ब्राह्मणायाभिरूपाय (brāhmaṇāya abhirūpāya) - to the Brāhmaṇa; deserving; यो (yaḥ) - who; दद्याद् (dadyāt) - would give; अन्नम् (annam) - food; अर्थिने (arthine) - to the one seeking (begging); निदधाति (nidadhāti) - deposits; निधिं (nidhiṃ) - treasure; श्रेष्ठं (śreṣṭham) - excellent; पारलौकिकम् (pāralaukikam) - otherworldly; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - for oneself;]
(To the deserving Brāhmaṇa, who would give food to the one seeking, deposits an excellent otherworldly treasure for oneself.)
He who gives food to a deserving Brāhmaṇa who is in need, deposits an excellent otherworldly treasure for himself. (13-62-10)
श्रान्तमध्वनि वर्तन्तं वृद्धमर्हमुपस्थितम्। अर्चयेद्भूतिमन्विच्छन्गृहस्थो गृहमागतम् ॥१३-६२-११॥
śrāntamadhvani vartantaṃ vṛddham arham upasthitam। arcayed bhūtim anvicchan gṛhastho gṛham āgatam॥13-62-11॥
[श्रान्तमध्वनि (śrāntam-adhvani) - to one weary (śrānta) on the road (adhvan); वर्तन्तं (vartantam) - who is continuing; वृद्धम् (vṛddham) - an old man; अर्हम् (arham) - worthy (of respect); उपस्थितम् (upasthitam) - arrived; अर्चयेत् (arcayet) - should honor; भूतिम् (bhūtim) - prosperity; अन्विच्छन् (anvicchan) - desiring; गृहस्थः (gṛhasthaḥ) - householder; गृहमागतम् (gṛham-āgatam) - one who has come to the house;]
(A householder, desiring prosperity, should honor one who is old, worthy, arrived, weary from travel, and who has come to the house.)
A householder who desires prosperity should honor a worthy old man, weary from travel, who has come to his house. (13-62-11)
क्रोधमुत्पतितं हित्वा सुशीलो वीतमत्सरः। अन्नदः प्राप्नुते राजन्दिवि चेह च यत्सुखम् ॥१३-६२-१२॥
krodham utpatitaṃ hitvā suśīlo vītamatsaraḥ। annadaḥ prāpnute rājan divi ca iha ca yat sukham ॥13-62-12॥
[क्रोधम् (krodham) - anger; उत्पतितम् (utpatitam) - arisen; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; सुशीलः (suśīlaḥ) - of good character; वीतमत्सरः (vītamatsaraḥ) - free from envy; अन्नदः (annadaḥ) - giver of food; प्राप्नुते (prāpnute) - attains; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness;]
(Anger arisen having abandoned, of good character, free from envy, giver of food attains, O king, in heaven and here and that happiness.)
O king, one who abandons arisen anger, is of good character, free from envy, and is a giver of food attains that happiness both here and in heaven. (13-62-12)
नावमन्येदभिगतं न प्रणुद्यात्कथञ्चन। अपि श्वपाके शुनि वा न दानं विप्रणश्यति ॥१३-६२-१३॥
nāvamanyed abhigataṃ na praṇudyāt kathañcana। api śvapāke śuni vā na dānaṃ vipraṇaśyati ॥13-62-13॥
[न (na) - not; अवमन्येत् (avamanyet) - should despise; अभिगतं (abhigatam) - arrived; न (na) - not; प्रणुद्यात् (praṇudyāt) - should reject; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; अपि (api) - even; श्वपाके (śvapāke) - in a caṇḍāla (outcaste who eats dog flesh); शुनि (śuni) - in a dog; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; दानं (dānam) - gift; विप्रणश्यति (vipraṇaśyati) - is destroyed;]
(Not should despise the one who has come, not should reject in any way; even in a caṇḍāla or in a dog, not the gift is destroyed.)
One should not despise or in any way reject someone who has arrived; even if the recipient is a caṇḍāla or a dog, a gift is never lost. (13-62-13)
यो दद्यादपरिक्लिष्टमन्नमध्वनि वर्तते। श्रान्तायादृष्टपूर्वाय स महद्धर्ममाप्नुयात् ॥१३-६२-१४॥
yo dadyād aparikliṣṭam annam adhvani vartate। śrāntāya adṛṣṭapūrvāya sa mahad dharmam āpnuyāt॥13-62-14॥
[यो (yo) - who; दद्याद् (dadyād) - should give; अपरिक्लिष्टम् (aparikliṣṭam) - unspoiled; अन्नम् (annam) - food; अध्वनि (adhvani) - on the road; वर्तते (vartate) - is; श्रान्ताय (śrāntāya) - to the weary one; अदृष्टपूर्वाय (adṛṣṭapūrvāya) - to one not seen before; सः (saḥ) - he; महत् (mahat) - great; धर्मम् (dharmam) - merit; आप्नुयात् (āpnuyāt) - would attain;]
(Who should give unspoiled food, on the road is, to the weary one, to one not seen before, he great merit would attain.)
Whoever gives unspoiled food to a weary traveler whom he has not seen before while on the road, he attains great merit. (13-62-14)
पितॄन्देवानृषीन्विप्रानतिथींश्च जनाधिप। यो नरः प्रीणयत्यन्नैस्तस्य पुण्यफलं महत् ॥१३-६२-१५॥
pitṝn devān ṛṣīn viprān atithīṁś ca janādhipa। yo naraḥ prīṇayaty annais tasya puṇya-phalaṁ mahat ॥13-62-15॥
[पितॄन् (pitṝn) - fathers (manes); देवान् (devān) - gods; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; विप्रान् (viprān) - Brāhmaṇas; अतिथीन् (atithīn) - guests; च (ca) - and; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O ruler of men; यः (yaḥ) - who; नरः (naraḥ) - man; प्रीणयति (prīṇayati) - pleases; अन्नैः (annaiḥ) - with food; तस्य (tasya) - his; पुण्यफलम् (puṇya-phalam) - fruit of merit; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(Fathers (manes), gods, sages, Brāhmaṇas, guests and O ruler of men, who man pleases with food, his fruit of merit (is) great.)
O ruler of men, the man who pleases fathers, gods, sages, Brāhmaṇas, and guests with food obtains a great reward of merit. (13-62-15)
कृत्वापि पापकं कर्म यो दद्यादन्नमर्थिने। ब्राह्मणाय विशेषेण न स पापेन युज्यते ॥१३-६२-१६॥
kṛtvāpi pāpakaṃ karma yo dadyād annam arthine. brāhmaṇāya viśeṣeṇa na sa pāpena yujyate ॥13-62-16॥
[कृत्वा अपि (kṛtvā api) - even having done; also; पापकं कर्म (pāpakaṃ karma) - sinful act; action; यः (yaḥ) - who; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - would give; अन्नम् (annam) - food; अर्थिने (arthine) - to one in need; ब्राह्मणाय (brāhmaṇāya) - to a Brāhmaṇa; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; पापेन (pāpena) - by sin; युज्यते (yujyate) - is associated;]
(Even having done a sinful act, who would give food to one in need, especially to a Brāhmaṇa, he is not associated by sin.)
Even if one has performed a sinful act, whoever gives food to a needy person—especially to a Brāhmaṇa—he is not tainted by that sin. (13-62-16)
ब्राह्मणेष्वक्षयं दानमन्नं शूद्रे महाफलम्। अन्नदानं च शूद्रे च ब्राह्मणे च विशिष्यते ॥१३-६२-१७॥
brāhmaṇeṣvakṣayaṃ dānamannaṃ śūdre mahāphalam। annadānaṃ ca śūdre ca brāhmaṇe ca viśiṣyate॥13-62-17॥
[ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - among Brāhmaṇas; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; दानम् (dānam) - gift; अन्नम् (annam) - food; शूद्रे (śūdre) - for Śūdra; महाफलम् (mahāphalam) - great fruit (result); अन्नदानम् (annadānam) - the gift of food; च (ca) - and; शूद्रे (śūdre) - in Śūdra; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणे (brāhmaṇe) - in Brāhmaṇa; च (ca) - and; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is considered superior;]
(Among Brāhmaṇas, imperishable is the gift of food; for Śūdra, great fruit; the gift of food also in Śūdra and in Brāhmaṇa is considered superior. (13-62-17))
Among Brāhmaṇas, the giving of food is imperishable; for a Śūdra, it yields great merit. The donation of food, both to a Śūdra and a Brāhmaṇa, is considered especially excellent. (13-62-17)
न पृच्छेद्गोत्रचरणं स्वाध्यायं देशमेव वा। भिक्षितो ब्राह्मणेनेह जन्म वान्नं प्रयाचितः ॥१३-६२-१८॥
na pṛcched gotracaraṇaṃ svādhyāyaṃ deśam eva vā। bhikṣito brāhmaṇen iha janma vā annaṃ prayācitaḥ॥13-62-18॥
[न (na) - not; पृच्छेत् (pṛcchet) - he should enquire; गोत्रचरणम् (gotracaraṇam) - family and tradition; स्वाध्यायम् (svādhyāyam) - self-study of Veda; देशम् (deśam) - country; एव (eva) - only; वा (vā) - or; भिक्षितः (bhikṣitaḥ) - having begged; ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - by a Brāhmaṇa; इह (iha) - here; जन्म (janma) - birth; वा (vā) - or; अन्नम् (annam) - food; प्रयाचितः (prayācitaḥ) - being asked (for);]
(Not should enquire family and tradition, self-study of Veda, country only or. Having begged by a Brāhmaṇa here birth or food being asked for.)
A Brāhmaṇa, when begging, should not ask about family, tradition, Vedic study, or country. Here, having been begged, he should give food without inquiring about birth or other matters. (13-62-18)
अन्नदस्यान्नवृक्षाश्च सर्वकामफलान्विताः। भवन्तीहाथ वामुत्र नृपते नात्र संशयः ॥१३-६२-१९॥
annadasyānnavṛkṣāś ca sarvakāmaphalānvitāḥ। bhavantīhātha vāmutra nṛpate nātra saṃśayaḥ॥13-62-19॥
[अन्नदस्य (annadasya) - of the giver of food; अन्नवृक्षाः (annavṛkṣāḥ) - food trees; च (ca) - and; सर्वकामफलान्विताः (sarvakāmaphalānvitāḥ) - possessed of all desired fruits; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; arise; इह (iha) - here; अथ (atha) - and; then; वा (vā) - or; अमत्र (amutra) - there (in the other world); नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Of the giver of food, food trees possessed of all desired fruits arise, here or there, O king; not here is doubt.)
O king, for the giver of food, trees bearing all desired fruits appear, whether here or in the next world; of this there is no doubt. (13-62-19)
आशंसन्ते हि पितरः सुवृष्टिमिव कर्षकाः। अस्माकमपि पुत्रो वा पौत्रो वान्नं प्रदास्यति ॥१३-६२-२०॥
āśaṁsante hi pitaraḥ suvṛṣṭim-iva karṣakāḥ। asmākam-api putro vā pautro vā annaṁ pradāsyati ॥13-62-20॥
[आशंसन्ते (āśaṁsante) - hope for; हि (hi) - indeed; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; सुवृष्टिमिव (suvṛṣṭim-iva) - like good rain; कर्षकाः (karṣakāḥ) - farmers; अस्माकमपि (asmākam-api) - of us also; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; वा (vā) - or; पौत्रः (pautraḥ) - grandson; वा (vā) - or; अन्नं (annaṁ) - food; प्रदास्यति (pradāsyati) - will offer;]
(Hope for indeed ancestors like good rain farmers. Of us also son or grandson or food will offer.)
Just as farmers hope for good rain, so indeed do the ancestors hope: "Our son or grandson too will offer food." (13-62-20)
ब्राह्मणो हि महद्भूतं स्वयं देहीति याचते। अकामो वा सकामो वा दत्त्वा पुण्यमवाप्नुयात् ॥१३-६२-२१॥
brāhmaṇo hi mahadbhūtaṃ svayaṃ dehīti yācate। akāmo vā sakāmo vā dattvā puṇyam avāpnuyāt ॥13-62-21॥

(Brāhmaṇa indeed great being himself "give" thus asks. Without desire or with desire or, having given, merit may attain.)
A brāhmaṇa, indeed a great being, himself asks saying "give". Whether without desire or with desire, having given, one may attain merit. (13-62-21)
ब्राह्मणः सर्वभूतानामतिथिः प्रसृताग्रभुक्। विप्रा यमभिगच्छन्ति भिक्षमाणा गृहं सदा ॥१३-६२-२२॥
brāhmaṇaḥ sarvabhūtānām-atithiḥ prasṛtāgrabhuk| viprā yam-abhi-gacchanti bhikṣamāṇā gṛhaṃ sadā ॥13-62-22॥

(Brāhmaṇa of all beings guest, one who eats what is offered by the outstretched hand. The wise whom approach begging the house always. (13-62-22))
The Brāhmaṇa is the guest of all beings, the one who eats what is offered by the outstretched hand. The wise (Brāhmaṇas), seeking alms, always approach the house. (13-62-22)
सत्कृताश्च निवर्तन्ते तदतीव प्रवर्धते। महाभोगे कुले जन्म प्रेत्य प्राप्नोति भारत ॥१३-६२-२३॥
satkṛtāś ca nivartante tad atīva pravardhate। mahābhoge kule janma pretya prāpnoti bhārata॥13-62-23॥

(Those who are honored and turn away, that exceedingly grows. In great enjoyment, in a family, birth after dying he obtains, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, when the honored ones withdraw, that (thing) grows exceedingly, and after death one gains birth in a family of great enjoyments. (13-62-23)
दत्त्वा त्वन्नं नरो लोके तथा स्थानमनुत्तमम्। मृष्टमृष्टान्नदायी तु स्वर्गे वसति सत्कृतः ॥१३-६२-२४॥
dattvā tv annaṃ naro loke tathā sthānam anuttamam। mṛṣṭa-mṛṣṭānna-dāyī tu svarge vasati satkṛtaḥ॥13-62-24॥
[दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; त्वन्नं (tv annaṃ) - your food; नरः (naraḥ) - man; लोके (loke) - in the world; तथा (tathā) - likewise; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; मृष्टमृष्टान्नदायी (mṛṣṭa-mṛṣṭānna-dāyī) - giver of pure and pure food; तु (tu) - but; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; वसति (vasati) - dwells; सत्कृतः (satkṛtaḥ) - honored;]
(Having given your food, a man in the world likewise (obtains) an unsurpassed place; but the giver of pure and pure food dwells in heaven, honored.)
A man who gives your food in this world attains, likewise, the highest place; but the giver of finest and purest food dwells in heaven, honored. (13-62-24)
अन्नं प्राणा नराणां हि सर्वमन्ने प्रतिष्ठितम्। अन्नदः पशुमान्पुत्री धनवान्भोगवानपि ॥१३-६२-२५॥
annaṃ prāṇā narāṇāṃ hi sarvam anne pratiṣṭhitam। annadaḥ paśumān putrī dhanavān bhogavān api॥13-62-25॥

(Food, life breaths of men indeed; all in food established. Giver of food, having cattle, having a son, wealthy, enjoying pleasures also.)
Food is indeed the life of men; all is established in food. The giver of food has cattle, sons, wealth, and also enjoys pleasures. (13-62-25)
प्राणवांश्चापि भवति रूपवांश्च तथा नृप। अन्नदः प्राणदो लोके सर्वदः प्रोच्यते तु सः ॥१३-६२-२६॥
prāṇavāṃś cāpi bhavati rūpavāṃś ca tathā nṛpa। annadaḥ prāṇado loke sarvadaḥ procyate tu saḥ ॥13-62-26॥
[प्राणवान् (prāṇavān) - possessed of vital breath; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; रूपवान् (rūpavān) - possessed of beauty; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - so; in like manner; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; अन्नदः (annadaḥ) - giver of food; प्राणदः (prāṇadaḥ) - giver of life; लोके (loke) - in the world; सर्वदः (sarvadaḥ) - giver of everything; प्रोच्यते (procyate) - is pronounced; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(He becomes possessed of vital breath and also of beauty, O king. The giver of food is called in the world the giver of life, the giver of everything, but he is thus spoken of.)
O king, a person becomes both endowed with vital energy and beauty. The giver of food is regarded in the world as the giver of life and of all things; that is what he is proclaimed as. (13-62-26)
अन्नं हि दत्त्वातिथये ब्राह्मणाय यथाविधि। प्रदाता सुखमाप्नोति देवैश्चाप्यभिपूज्यते ॥१३-६२-२७॥

(Food indeed having given to a guest, to a brāhmaṇa, according to rule, the giver happiness attains, by the gods and also is especially honoured.)
Indeed, by giving food to a guest brāhmaṇa according to proper rules, the giver attains happiness and is also especially honoured by the gods. (13-62-27)
ब्राह्मणो हि महद्भूतं क्षेत्रं चरति पादवत्। उप्यते तत्र यद्बीजं तद्धि पुण्यफलं महत् ॥१३-६२-२८॥

(Brāhmaṇa indeed great being field moves as with feet. Is sown there whatever seed, that indeed meritorious fruit great.)
The Brāhmaṇa, indeed, moves like one with feet on the great field (of being). Whatever seed is sown there, that surely yields great meritorious fruit. (13-62-28)
प्रत्यक्षं प्रीतिजननं भोक्तृदात्रोर्भवत्युत। सर्वाण्यन्यानि दानानि परोक्षफलवन्त्युत ॥१३-६२-२९॥
pratyakṣaṁ prīti-jananaṁ bhoktṛ-dātror bhavat yuta। sarvāṇi anyāni dānāni parokṣa-phala-vant yuta ॥13-62-29॥
[प्रत्यक्षम् (pratyakṣam) - direct; immediately visible; प्रीतिजननम् (prīti-jananam) - causing delight; generating satisfaction; भोक्तृदात्रोः (bhoktṛ-dātror) - for the recipient and the giver; of the eater and the giver; भवति (bhavati) - it is; it becomes; उत (uta) - indeed; also; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; दानानि (dānāni) - gifts; donations; परोक्षफलवन्ति (parokṣa-phala-vanti) - possessing indirect fruit; giving unseen result; उत (uta) - indeed; also;]
(Direct generation of delight for recipient and giver becomes indeed. All other donations are possessed of indirect fruit indeed. (13-62-29))
Giving directly brings immediate delight to both the receiver and the giver. All other types of gifts yield only indirect or unseen results. (13-62-29)
अन्नाद्धि प्रसवं विद्धि रतिमन्नाद्धि भारत। धर्मार्थावन्नतो विद्धि रोगनाशं तथान्नतः ॥१३-६२-३०॥
annāddhi prasavaṃ viddhi ratimannāddhi bhārata। dharmārthāvannato viddhi roganāśaṃ tathānnataḥ ॥13-62-30॥
[अन्नात् (annāt) - from food; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रसवम् (prasavam) - generation; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; रतिम् (ratim) - pleasure; अन्नात् (annāt) - from food; हि (hi) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; धर्मार्थौ (dharmārthau) - dharma and artha; अन्नतः (annataḥ) - from food; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; रोगनाशम् (roganāśam) - destruction of disease; तथा (tathā) - also; अन्नतः (annataḥ) - from food;]
(From food indeed generation (comes); know, pleasure (comes) from food, O Bhārata. Dharma and artha from food know; destruction of disease also from food.)
O Bhārata, know that generation indeed arises from food; pleasure also comes from food. Dharma and artha are derived from food, and likewise, from food comes the destruction of disease. (13-62-30)
अन्नं ह्यमृतमित्याह पुराकल्पे प्रजापतिः। अन्नं भुवं दिवं खं च सर्वमन्ने प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥१३-६२-३१॥
annaṃ hy amṛtam ity āha purākalpe prajāpatiḥ। annaṃ bhuvaṃ divaṃ khaṃ ca sarvam anne pratiṣṭhitam॥13-62-31॥
[अन्नम् (annaṃ) - food; हि (hi) - indeed; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - immortal; nectar; इति (iti) - thus; आह (āha) - said; पुराकल्पे (purākalpe) - in a former age; प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - Prajapati; the Lord of creatures; अन्नम् (annaṃ) - food; भुवम् (bhuvam) - earth; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; खम् (kham) - sky; च (ca) - and; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; अन्ने (anne) - in food; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - established;]
(Food, indeed, is immortal—thus said Prajapati in a former age. Food, earth, heaven, and sky, and all, are established in food.)
Prajapati once said in a former age: "Food is indeed immortal." Food, earth, heaven, sky—everything is established in food. (13-62-31)
अन्नप्रणाशे भिद्यन्ते शरीरे पञ्च धातवः। बलं बलवतोऽपीह प्रणश्यत्यन्नहानितः ॥१३-६२-३२॥
annapraṇāśe bhidyante śarīre pañca dhātavaḥ। balaṃ balavato'piha praṇaśyatyannahānitaḥ ॥13-62-32॥
[अन्नप्रणाशे (annapraṇāśe) - at the destruction of food; भिद्यन्ते (bhidyante) - are broken apart; शरीरे (śarīre) - in the body; पञ्च (pañca) - five; धातवः (dhātavaḥ) - elements (bodily constituents); बलं (balaṃ) - strength; बलवतः (balavataḥ) - of the strong; अपि (api) - even; इह (iha) - here; प्रणश्यति (praṇaśyati) - perishes; अन्नहानितः (annahānitaḥ) - owing to loss of food;]
(At the destruction of food, in the body, the five elements are broken apart; strength, even of the strong here, perishes owing to loss of food.)
When food is lost, the five bodily elements in the body are broken apart; even the strength of a strong person perishes here due to the lack of food. (13-62-32)
आवाहाश्च विवाहाश्च यज्ञाश्चान्नमृते तथा। न वर्तन्ते नरश्रेष्ठ ब्रह्म चात्र प्रलीयते ॥१३-६२-३३॥
āvāhāś ca vivāhāś ca yajñāś cānnam ṛte tathā। na vartante naraśreṣṭha brahma cātra pralīyate ॥13-62-33॥

(Invocations and marriages and sacrifices and, without food, likewise, do not exist, O best among men; the Veda here is dissolved.)
O best of men, invocations, marriages, sacrifices, and likewise, without food, do not exist; the Veda itself is also lost here. (13-62-33)
अन्नतः सर्वमेतद्धि यत्किञ्चित्स्थाणु जङ्गमम्। त्रिषु लोकेषु धर्मार्थमन्नं देयमतो बुधैः ॥१३-६२-३४॥
annataḥ sarvam etad dhi yat kiñcit sthāṇu jaṅgamam। triṣu lokeṣu dharmārtham annaṃ deyam ato budhaiḥ॥13-62-34॥

(From food all this indeed whatever immobile (and) moving (beings); in the three worlds, for the sake of dharma, food should be given therefore by the wise.)
Indeed, everything here, whether immobile or moving, arises from food; therefore, in the three worlds, food should be given for the sake of dharma by the wise. (13-62-34)
अन्नदस्य मनुष्यस्य बलमोजो यशः सुखम्। कीर्तिश्च वर्धते शश्वत्त्रिषु लोकेषु पार्थिव ॥१३-६२-३५॥
annadasya manuṣyasya balamojo yaśaḥ sukham। kīrtiś ca vardhate śaśvat triṣu lokeṣu pārthiva ॥13-62-35॥

(Of the giver of food, O king, strength, vital energy, fame, happiness, and renown always increase in the three worlds.)

मेघेष्वम्भः संनिधत्ते प्राणानां पवनः शिवः। तच्च मेघगतं वारि शक्रो वर्षति भारत ॥१३-६२-३६॥
megheṣv ambhaḥ saṃnidhatte prāṇānāṃ pavanaḥ śivaḥ। tac ca meghagataṃ vāri śakro varṣati bhārata॥13-62-36॥
[मेघेषु (megheṣu) - in clouds; अम्भः (ambhaḥ) - water; संनिधत्ते (saṃnidhatte) - is brought together; प्राणानाम् (prāṇānām) - of living beings; पवनः (pavanaḥ) - wind; शिवः (śivaḥ) - auspicious; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; मेघगतं (meghagataṃ) - gone into the cloud; वारि (vāri) - water; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; वर्षति (varṣati) - showers; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(In clouds water is collected, of living beings the wind is auspicious. And that water gone into the cloud, Indra showers, O Bhārata.)
Water is gathered in the clouds, and the wind is auspicious for living beings. That water which has entered the clouds, Indra releases as rain, O Bhārata. (13-62-36)
आदत्ते च रसं भौममादित्यः स्वगभस्तिभिः। वायुरादित्यतस्तांश्च रसान्देवः प्रजापतिः ॥१३-६२-३७॥
ādattē ca rasaṃ bhaumam ādityaḥ svagabhastibhiḥ. vāyur ādityatas tāṃś ca rasān devaḥ prajāpatiḥ ॥13-62-37॥

(And the sun takes the essence of earth with his own rays. The wind from the sun, and those essences, the god Prajapati (takes).)

तद्यदा मेघतो वारि पतितं भवति क्षितौ। तदा वसुमती देवी स्निग्धा भवति भारत ॥१३-६२-३८॥
tad yadā meghato vāri patitaṃ bhavati kṣitau। tadā vasumatī devī snigdhā bhavati bhārata ॥13-62-38॥
[तत् (tat) - then; यदा (yadā) - when; मेघतः (meghataḥ) - from the cloud; वारि (vāri) - water; पतितम् (patitam) - fallen; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on the earth; तदा (tadā) - then; वसुमती (vasumatī) - Vasumatī (the earth); देवी (devī) - the goddess; स्निग्धा (snigdhā) - moistened; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then when water fallen from the cloud becomes on the earth, then Vasumatī the goddess becomes moistened, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, when water has fallen from the cloud onto the earth, then the goddess Vasumatī becomes moistened. (13-62-38)
ततः सस्यानि रोहन्ति येन वर्तयते जगत्। मांसमेदोस्थिशुक्राणां प्रादुर्भावस्ततः पुनः ॥१३-६२-३९॥
tataḥ sasyāni rohanti yena vartayate jagat। māṃsa-medo-asthi-śukrāṇāṃ prādurbhāvas tataḥ punaḥ॥13-62-39॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from that; then; सस्यानि (sasyāni) - plants; crops; रोहन्ति (rohanti) - grow; arise; येन (yena) - by which; through which; वर्तयते (vartayate) - maintains; sustains; जगत् (jagat) - the world; universe; मांसमेदोस्थिशुक्राणां (māṃsa-medo-asthi-śukrāṇāṃ) - of flesh, fat, bone, (and) semen; प्रादुर्भावः (prādurbhāvaḥ) - manifestation; coming into being; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; then; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(From that, plants grow; by which the world is maintained. The manifestation of flesh, fat, bone, (and) semen, from that again.)
Then from that, crops arise, by which the world is sustained. Again, from that, the formation of flesh, fat, bone, and semen takes place. (13-62-39)
सम्भवन्ति ततः शुक्रात्प्राणिनः पृथिवीपते। अग्नीषोमौ हि तच्छुक्रं प्रजनः पुष्यतश्च ह ॥१३-६२-४०॥
sambhavanti tataḥ śukrāt prāṇinaḥ pṛthivīpate। agnīṣomau hi tac śukraṃ prajanaḥ puṣyataś ca ha ॥13-62-40॥
[सम्भवन्ति (sambhavanti) - arise; become; come into being; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; thence; शुक्रात् (śukrāt) - from semen; from virile fluid; प्राणिनः (prāṇinaḥ) - living beings; animate creatures; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O king of the earth; O lord of the earth; अग्नीषोमौ (agnīṣomau) - Agni and Soma; the deities Agni and Soma; हि (hi) - indeed; for; तत् (tat) - that; शुक्रं (śukraṃ) - semen; virile fluid; प्रजनः (prajanaḥ) - creatures; offspring; पुष्यतः (puṣyataḥ) - nourishing; supporting; च (ca) - and; ह (ha) - indeed; surely;]
(Arise from that semen, living beings, O king of the earth. Agni and Soma indeed that semen, the offspring nourishing and indeed.)
O king of the earth, living beings arise from that semen. Indeed, Agni and Soma nourish and support that semen, which produces offspring. (13-62-40)
एवमन्नं च सूर्यश्च पवनः शुक्रमेव च। एक एव स्मृतो राशिर्यतो भूतानि जज्ञिरे ॥१३-६२-४१॥
evam annaṃ ca sūryaś ca pavanaḥ śukram eva ca। eka eva smṛto rāśir yato bhūtāni jajñire॥13-62-41॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; अन्नं (annaṃ) - food; च (ca) - and; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - sun; च (ca) - and; पवनः (pavanaḥ) - wind; शुक्रम् (śukram) - the pure; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; एव (eva) - indeed; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is considered; राशिः (rāśiḥ) - mass; यतः (yataḥ) - from which; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; जज्ञिरे (jajñire) - were born;]
(Thus food and the sun and wind and indeed the pure, and one indeed is considered the mass from which beings were born.)
Thus, food, the sun, the wind, and the pure (essence) — all are considered as one single mass from which beings have arisen. (13-62-41)
प्राणान्ददाति भूतानां तेजश्च भरतर्षभ। गृहमभ्यागतायाशु यो दद्यादन्नमर्थिने ॥१३-६२-४२॥
prāṇān dadāti bhūtānāṃ tejaś ca bharatarṣabha। gṛham abhyāgatāya āśu yaḥ dadyād annam arthine॥13-62-42॥

(He gives vital energies to beings and lustre, O best of the Bharatas, who quickly should give food to a suppliant who has arrived at the house.)
O best of the Bharatas, the one who quickly gives food to a suppliant who has come to the house imparts vital energies and lustre to living beings. (13-62-42)

(By Nārada, thus being told, I ate food always, O king. Non-envious one, you also, therefore, give food, free from illness.)

दत्त्वान्नं विधिवद्राजन्विप्रेभ्यस्त्वमपि प्रभो। यथावदनुरूपेभ्यस्ततः स्वर्गमवाप्स्यसि ॥१३-६२-४४॥
dattvā annaṃ vidhivad rājan viprebhyas tvam api prabho। yathāvad anurūpebhyaḥ tataḥ svargam avāpsyasi॥13-62-44॥
[दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; अन्नम् (annam) - food; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as is proper; अनुरूपेभ्यः (anurūpebhyaḥ) - to those who are deserving; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will attain;]
(Having given food according to rule, O king, to the Brāhmaṇas, you also, O lord, as is proper to those who are deserving, then heaven you will attain.)
O king, after you offer food properly to deserving Brāhmaṇas as prescribed, you too, O lord, will attain heaven. (13-62-44)
अन्नदानां हि ये लोकास्तांस्त्वं शृणु नराधिप। भवनानि प्रकाशन्ते दिवि तेषां महात्मनाम् ॥ नानासंस्थानरूपाणि नानास्तम्भान्वितानि च ॥१३-६२-४५॥

(Of food-givers indeed which worlds those you hear, O king. Mansions shine in heaven of them, of great souls. Of various forms, endowed with various pillars, and.)
O king, hear from me which worlds (are attained) by the givers of food. The mansions of those great souls shine in heaven, of various forms and endowed with many pillars. (13-62-45)
चन्द्रमण्डलशुभ्राणि किङ्किणीजालवन्ति च। तरुणादित्यवर्णानि स्थावराणि चराणि च ॥१३-६२-४६॥
candramaṇḍalaśubhrāṇi kiṅkiṇījālavanti ca। taruṇādityavarṇāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca ॥13-62-46॥
[चन्द्रमण्डलशुभ्राणि (candra-maṇḍala-śubhrāṇi) - moon-disc-brilliant; shining like the disc of the moon; किङ्किणीजालवन्ति (kiṅkiṇī-jāla-vanti) - with clusters of small bells; possessing networks of bells; च (ca) - and; तरुणादित्यवर्णानि (taruṇa-āditya-varṇāni) - young-sun-colored; having the hue of the early sun; स्थावराणि (sthāvarāṇi) - inanimate; stationary; चराणि (carāṇi) - animate; moving; च (ca) - and;]
(Moon-disc-brilliant, with clusters of bells and; young-sun-colored, inanimate, animate and.)
Brilliant like the disc of the moon, adorned with networks of little bells; hued like the rising sun, both stationary and moving things. (13-62-46)
अनेकशतभौमानि सान्तर्जलवनानि च। वैडूर्यार्कप्रकाशानि रौप्यरुक्ममयानि च ॥१३-६२-४७॥
anekaśatabhaum āni sāntarjalavanāni ca। vaiḍūryārkaprakāśāni raupyarukmamayāni ca॥13-62-47॥
[अनेकशत (anekaśata) - hundreds; many hundreds; भौमानि (bhaumāni) - made of earth; earthly; स (sa) - with; together with; अन्तर् (antar) - inner; internal; जलवनानि (jalavanāni) - water-forests; forests with water; च (ca) - and; वैडूर्य (vaiḍūrya) - of beryl; of lapis lazuli (a gem); अर्कप्रकाशानि (arkaprakāśāni) - shining like the sun; having the brilliance of the sun; रौप्य (raupya) - of silver; रुक्ममयानि (rukmamayāni) - made of gold; च (ca) - and;]
(Many hundreds of earthly (structures), with internal water-forests and also (structures) of beryl, shining with solar radiance, and (structures) made of silver and gold also.)
There are many hundreds of mansions of earth, with internal water-forests, as well as (mansions) of beryl gleaming with the brightness of the sun, and also structures made of silver and gold. (13-62-47)
सर्वकामफलाश्चापि वृक्षा भवनसंस्थिताः। वाप्यो वीथ्यः सभाः कूपा दीर्घिकाश्चैव सर्वशः ॥१३-६२-४८॥
sarvakāmaphalāś cāpi vṛkṣā bhavanasaṅsthitāḥ। vāpyō vīthyaḥ sabhāḥ kūpā dīrghikāś caiva sarvaśaḥ॥13-62-48॥
[सर्वकामफलाः (sarvakāmaphalāḥ) - yielding all desired fruits; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वृक्षाः (vṛkṣāḥ) - trees; भवनसंस्थिताः (bhavanasaṅsthitāḥ) - situated near houses; वाप्यः (vāpyaḥ) - reservoirs; वीथ्यः (vīthyaḥ) - streets; सभाः (sabhāḥ) - assembly halls; कूपाः (kūpāḥ) - wells; दीर्घिकाः (dīrghikāḥ) - ponds; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - everywhere;]
(Yielding all desired fruits and also trees situated near houses; reservoirs, streets, assembly halls, wells, ponds indeed everywhere.)

घोषवन्ति च यानानि युक्तान्यथ सहस्रशः। भक्ष्यभोज्यमयाः शैला वासांस्याभरणानि च ॥१३-६२-४९॥
ghoṣavanti ca yānāni yuktānyatha sahasraśaḥ। bhakṣyabhojyamayāḥ śailā vāsāṃsyābharaṇāni ca॥13-62-49॥
[घोषवन्ति (ghoṣavanti) - resounding; च (ca) - and; यानानि (yānāni) - vehicles; युक्तानि (yuktāni) - yoked; अथ (atha) - then; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; भक्ष्यभोज्यमयाः (bhakṣyabhojyamayāḥ) - made of edible and enjoyable (things); শैला (śailā) - mountains; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - garments; आभरणानि (ābharaṇāni) - ornaments; च (ca) - and;]
(Resounding also vehicles yoked then by thousands; made of edible and enjoyable (things) mountains, garments, ornaments and.)
There were also vehicles resounding and yoked by the thousands; mountains made of edible and enjoyable things, as well as garments and ornaments. (13-62-49)
क्षीरं स्रवन्त्यः सरितस्तथा चैवान्नपर्वताः। प्रासादाः पाण्डुराभ्राभाः शय्याश्च कनकोज्ज्वलाः ॥ तानन्नदाः प्रपद्यन्ते तस्मादन्नप्रदो भव ॥१३-६२-५०॥
kṣīraṃ sravantyaḥ saritas tathā caiva annaparvatāḥ. prāsādāḥ pāṇḍurābhrābhāḥ śayyāś ca kanakojjvalāḥ ॥ tān annadāḥ prapadyante tasmād annaprado bhava ॥ 13-62-50॥
[क्षीरं (kṣīram) - milk; स्रवन्त्यः (sravantyaḥ) - flowing; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्नपर्वताः (anna-parvatāḥ) - mountains of food; प्रासादाः (prāsādāḥ) - palaces; पाण्डुर-अभ्र-अभाः (pāṇḍura-abhra-abhāḥ) - with the glow of white clouds; शय्याः (śayyāḥ) - beds; च (ca) - and; कनक-उज्ज्वलाः (kanaka-ujjvalāḥ) - shining with gold; तान् (tān) - those; अन्नदाः (annadāḥ) - givers of food; प्रपद्यन्ते (prapadyante) - attain; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अन्नप्रदः (annapradaḥ) - one who gives food; भव (bhava) - be; १३-६२-५० (13-62-50) -;]
(Milk-flowing rivers, thus also mountains of food, palaces with the glow of white clouds, and beds shining with gold; those (are) attained by givers of food; therefore, be a giver of food. (13-62-50))
Rivers flowing with milk, mountains of food, palaces shining like white clouds, and beds glistening with gold—these are attained by those who give food. Therefore, be a giver of food. (13-62-50)
एते लोकाः पुण्यकृतामन्नदानां महात्मनाम्। तस्मादन्नं विशेषेण दातव्यं मानवैर्भुवि ॥१३-६२-५१॥
ete lokāḥ puṇyakṛtām annadānām mahātmanām। tasmād annaṃ viśeṣeṇa dātavyaṃ mānavair bhuvi॥13-62-51॥
[एते (ete) - these; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; पुण्यकृताम् (puṇyakṛtām) - of those who have performed meritorious deeds; अन्नदानां (annadānām) - of those who give food as charity; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of great souls; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अन्नम् (annam) - food; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; दातव्यम् (dātavyam) - should be given; मानवैः (mānavaiḥ) - by humans; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth;]
(These worlds (are) of those who have performed meritorious deeds of giving food, of great souls. Therefore, food especially should be given by humans on the earth.)
These worlds belong to those great souls who have performed the meritorious act of giving food. Therefore, humans should especially give food on the earth. (13-62-51)
