काञ्चनादिदानम्

भीष्म उवाच॥
Bhiṣma said.
सर्वान्कामान्प्रयच्छन्ति ये प्रयच्छन्ति काञ्चनम्। इत्येवं भगवानत्रिः पितामहसुतोऽब्रवीत् ॥१३-६४-१॥
Those who give gold grant all desires—thus spoke the venerable Atri, son of the grandsire. (13-64-1)
पवित्रं शुच्यथायुष्यं पितॄणामक्षयं च तत्। सुवर्णं मनुजेन्द्रेण हरिश्चन्द्रेण कीर्तितम् ॥१३-६४-२॥
That gold, pure, life-promoting, and imperishable for the ancestors, was proclaimed by King Harishchandra. (13-64-2)
पानीयदानं परमं दानानां मनुरब्रवीत्। तस्माद्वापीश्च कूपांश्च तडागानि च खानयेत् ॥१३-६४-३॥
Manu said, "Of all gifts, the gift of water is the greatest; therefore, one should have tanks, wells, and ponds constructed." (13-64-3)
अर्धं पापस्य हरति पुरुषस्येह कर्मणः। कूपः प्रवृत्तपानीयः सुप्रवृत्तश्च नित्यशः ॥१३-६४-४॥
A well that always provides easily drawn water and is well maintained here removes half of the sin of the actions of a person. (13-64-4)
सर्वं तारयते वंशं यस्य खाते जलाशये। गावः पिबन्ति विप्राश्च साधवश्च नराः सदा ॥१३-६४-५॥
The entire lineage of the one in whose pit or water reservoir cows, Brahmins, the virtuous, and men always drink is liberated. (13-64-5)
निदाघकाले पानीयं यस्य तिष्ठत्यवारितम्। स दुर्गं विषमं कृच्छ्रं न कदाचिदवाप्नुते ॥१३-६४-६॥
He whose water remains unobstructed in the hot season never experiences difficulty, unevenness, or hardship. (13-64-6)
बृहस्पतेर्भगवतः पूष्णश्चैव भगस्य च। अश्विनोश्चैव वह्नेश्च प्रीतिर्भवति सर्पिषा ॥१३-६४-७॥
With ghee, satisfaction is produced for Bṛhaspati, the blessed one, Pūṣan, Bhaga, the Aśvins, and Agni. (13-64-7)
परमं भेषजं ह्येतद्यज्ञानामेतदुत्तमम्। रसानामुत्तमं चैतत्फलानां चैतदुत्तमम् ॥१३-६४-८॥
This is indeed the supreme medicine, the highest of all knowledges, the best among all tastes, and the best among fruits. (13-64-8)
फलकामो यशस्कामः पुष्टिकामश्च नित्यदा। घृतं दद्याद्द्विजातिभ्यः पुरुषः शुचिरात्मवान् ॥१३-६४-९॥
A person who desires reward, fame, or nourishment should always, while pure and self-controlled, give ghee to the twice-born. (13-64-9)
घृतं मासे आश्वयुजि विप्रेभ्यो यः प्रयच्छति। तस्मै प्रयच्छतो रूपं प्रीतौ देवाविहाश्विनौ ॥१३-६४-१०॥
Whoever gives clarified butter to Brāhmaṇas in the month of Āśvayuja, the two gods here, the Ashvins, being pleased, grant form (beauty) to that giver. (13-64-10)
पायसं सर्पिषा मिश्रं द्विजेभ्यो यः प्रयच्छति। गृहं तस्य न रक्षांसि धर्षयन्ति कदाचन ॥१३-६४-११॥
He who gives milk-rice mixed with ghee to Brahmins, demons never violate his house. (13-64-11)
पिपासया न म्रियते सोपच्छन्दश्च दृश्यते। न प्राप्नुयाच्च व्यसनं करकान्यः प्रयच्छति ॥१३-६४-१२॥
A man does not die from thirst; one with resources is also seen; one should not incur calamity, as another benefactor provides. (13-64-12)
प्रयतो ब्राह्मणाग्रेभ्यः श्रद्धया परया युतः। उपस्पर्शनषड्भागं लभते पुरुषः सदा ॥१३-६४-१३॥
A person who, with supreme faith and self-control, receives (rites) from the foremost brāhmaṇas, always obtains a sixth share of the merit of the ritual touching of water. (13-64-13)
यः साधनार्थं काष्ठानि ब्राह्मणेभ्यः प्रयच्छति। प्रतापार्थं च राजेन्द्र वृत्तवद्भ्यः सदा नरः ॥१३-६४-१४॥
O king, whoever gives firewood to Brāhmaṇas for ritual purposes and (gives) to the virtuous for the sake of valor, such a man always (obtains merit). (13-64-14)
सिध्यन्त्यर्थाः सदा तस्य कार्याणि विविधानि च। उपर्युपरि शत्रूणां वपुषा दीप्यते च सः ॥१३-६४-१५॥
His various actions and objectives are always successful; he shines above all his enemies by his form. (13-64-15)
भगवांश्चास्य सुप्रीतो वह्निर्भवति नित्यशः। न तं त्यजन्ते पशवः सङ्ग्रामे च जयत्यपि ॥१३-६४-१६॥
And for him, the blessed Fire is always well-pleased; the animals do not abandon him, and even in battle, he is victorious. (13-64-16)
पुत्राञ्छ्रियं च लभते यश्छत्रं सम्प्रयच्छति। चक्षुर्व्याधिं न लभते यज्ञभागमथाश्नुते ॥१३-६४-१७॥
Whoever gives an umbrella obtains sons and wealth. He does not incur eye disease and then enjoys a share of the sacrifice. (13-64-17)
निदाघकाले वर्षे वा यश्छत्रं सम्प्रयच्छति। नास्य कश्चिन्मनोदाहः कदाचिदपि जायते ॥ कृच्छ्रात्स विषमाच्चैव विप्र मोक्षमवाप्नुते ॥१३-६४-१८॥
Whoever gives an umbrella in intense heat or rain will never suffer mental torment, O Brāhmaṇa; such a person is freed from hardship and distress, and attains liberation. (13-64-18)
प्रदानं सर्वदानानां शकटस्य विशिष्यते। एवमाह महाभागः शाण्डिल्यो भगवानृषिः ॥१३-६४-१९॥
Among all gifts, the giving of a cart is distinguished. Thus spoke the highly fortunate sage Śāṇḍilya, the venerable seer. (13-64-19)
