सर्वान्कामान्प्रयच्छन्ति ये प्रयच्छन्ति काञ्चनम्। इत्येवं भगवानत्रिः पितामहसुतोऽब्रवीत् ॥१३-६४-१॥
sarvān kāmān prayacchanti ye prayacchanti kāñcanam। ityevaṁ bhagavān atriḥ pitāmahasuto'bravīt ॥13-64-1॥
[सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - give; ये (ye) - those who; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - give; काञ्चनम् (kāñcanam) - gold; इति (iti) - thus; एवं (evaṁ) - so; thus; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; अत्रिः (atriḥ) - Atri; पितामहसुतः (pitāmaha-sutaḥ) - son of the grandsire; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(All desires those who give, give gold. Thus so the venerable Atri, son of the grandsire, said.)
Those who give gold grant all desires—thus spoke the venerable Atri, son of the grandsire. (13-64-1)
पवित्रं शुच्यथायुष्यं पितॄणामक्षयं च तत्। सुवर्णं मनुजेन्द्रेण हरिश्चन्द्रेण कीर्तितम् ॥१३-६४-२॥
pavitraṃ śucyathāyuṣyaṃ pitṝṇāmakṣayaṃ ca tat। suvarṇaṃ manujendreṇa hariścandreṇa kīrtitam ॥13-64-2॥
[पवित्रं (pavitraṃ) - pure; शुच्यथायुष्यं (śucyathāyuṣyaṃ) - pure and life-promoting; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - of the ancestors; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; मनुजेन्द्रेण (manujendreṇa) - by the king of men; हरिश्चन्द्रेण (hariścandreṇa) - by Harishchandra; कीर्तितम् (kīrtitam) - was proclaimed;]
(Pure, pure and life-promoting, of the ancestors imperishable and that gold by the king of men, by Harishchandra, was proclaimed.)
That gold, pure, life-promoting, and imperishable for the ancestors, was proclaimed by King Harishchandra. (13-64-2)
पानीयदानं परमं दानानां मनुरब्रवीत्। तस्माद्वापीश्च कूपांश्च तडागानि च खानयेत् ॥१३-६४-३॥
pānīyadānaṃ paramaṃ dānānāṃ manurabravīt। tasmād vāpīś ca kūpāṃś ca taḍāgāni ca khānayet ॥13-64-3॥
[पानीयदानम् (pānīyadānam) - the gift of water; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; दानानाम् (dānānām) - of gifts; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu (the lawgiver); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; वापीः (vāpīḥ) - tanks; च (ca) - and; कूपान् (kūpān) - wells; च (ca) - and; तडागानि (taḍāgāni) - ponds; च (ca) - and; खानयेत् (khānayet) - one should have dug;]
(The gift of water is the highest of gifts, Manu said; therefore, tanks and wells and ponds and (other water bodies) one should have dug.)
Manu said, "Of all gifts, the gift of water is the greatest; therefore, one should have tanks, wells, and ponds constructed." (13-64-3)
अर्धं पापस्य हरति पुरुषस्येह कर्मणः। कूपः प्रवृत्तपानीयः सुप्रवृत्तश्च नित्यशः ॥१३-६४-४॥
ardhaṁ pāpasya harati puruṣasyeha karmaṇaḥ। kūpaḥ pravṛttapānīyaḥ supravṛttaśca nityaśaḥ ॥13-64-4॥
[अर्धं (ardhaṁ) - half; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of sin; हरति (harati) - removes; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a person; इह (iha) - here; कर्मणः (karmaṇaḥ) - of the act; कूपः (kūpaḥ) - a well; प्रवृत्तपानीयः (pravṛttapānīyaḥ) - having provision for drawing water; सुप्रवृत्तश्च (supravṛttaś ca) - and well-maintained; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always;]
(Half of the sin of a person here, of the act, a well having provision for drawing water and being well-maintained always, removes.)
A well that always provides easily drawn water and is well maintained here removes half of the sin of the actions of a person. (13-64-4)
सर्वं तारयते वंशं यस्य खाते जलाशये। गावः पिबन्ति विप्राश्च साधवश्च नराः सदा ॥१३-६४-५॥
sarvaṃ tārayate vaṃśaṃ yasya khāte jalāśaye। gāvaḥ pibanti viprāś ca sādhavaś ca narāḥ sadā ॥13-64-5॥
[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; तारयते (tārayate) - liberates; saves; वंशम् (vaṃśam) - family; lineage; यस्यम् (yasya) - whose; खाते (khāte) - in (the) pit; जलाशये (jalāśaye) - in (the) reservoir of water; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; पिबन्ति (pibanti) - drink; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brahmins; च (ca) - and; साधवः (sādhavaḥ) - the virtuous; the good; च (ca) - and; नराः (narāḥ) - men; people; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(All liberates (the) lineage whose, in the pit, in the water reservoir, cows drink, Brahmins and virtuous and men always.)
The entire lineage of the one in whose pit or water reservoir cows, Brahmins, the virtuous, and men always drink is liberated. (13-64-5)
निदाघकाले पानीयं यस्य तिष्ठत्यवारितम्। स दुर्गं विषमं कृच्छ्रं न कदाचिदवाप्नुते ॥१३-६४-६॥
nidāghakāle pānīyaṁ yasya tiṣṭhatyavāritam। sa durgaṁ viṣamaṁ kṛcchraṁ na kadācidavāpnute ॥13-64-6॥
[निदाघकाले (nidāgha-kāle) - in the hot season; पानीयं (pānīyam) - water; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; अवारितम् (avāritam) - unobstructed; स (sa) - he; दुर्गम् (durgaṁ) - difficulty; विषमम् (viṣamam) - unevenness; कृच्छ्रम् (kṛcchram) - hardship; न (na) - not; कदाचित् (kadācit) - ever; अवाप्नुते (avāpnute) - obtains;]
(In the hot season, water of whom remains unobstructed, he difficulty unevenness hardship not ever obtains.)
He whose water remains unobstructed in the hot season never experiences difficulty, unevenness, or hardship. (13-64-6)
बृहस्पतेर्भगवतः पूष्णश्चैव भगस्य च। अश्विनोश्चैव वह्नेश्च प्रीतिर्भवति सर्पिषा ॥१३-६४-७॥
bṛhaspaterbhagavataḥ pūṣṇaścaiva bhagasya ca. aśvinoścaiva vahneśca prītiḥ bhavati sarpiṣā ॥13-64-7॥
[बृहस्पतेः (bṛhaspateḥ) - of Bṛhaspati; भगवतः (bhagavataḥ) - of the blessed (one); पूष्णः (pūṣṇaḥ) - of Pūṣan; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भगस्य (bhagasya) - of Bhaga; च (ca) - and; अश्विनोः (aśvinoḥ) - of the Aśvins; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वह्नेः (vahneḥ) - of Agni (the Fire-god); च (ca) - and; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - delight; satisfaction; भवति (bhavati) - arises; becomes; सर्पिषा (sarpiṣā) - with ghee;]
(Of Bṛhaspati, of the blessed one, of Pūṣan, and indeed of Bhaga, and of the Aśvins, and indeed of the Fire-god, delight arises with ghee.)
With ghee, satisfaction is produced for Bṛhaspati, the blessed one, Pūṣan, Bhaga, the Aśvins, and Agni. (13-64-7)
परमं भेषजं ह्येतद्यज्ञानामेतदुत्तमम्। रसानामुत्तमं चैतत्फलानां चैतदुत्तमम् ॥१३-६४-८॥
paramaṃ bheṣajaṃ hy etad jñānām etad uttamam। rasānām uttamaṃ ca etat phalānāṃ ca etad uttamam॥13-64-8॥
[परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; भेषजं (bheṣajam) - medicine; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etad) - this; ज्ञानाम् (jñānām) - of knowledges (of knowledge); एतत् (etad) - this; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; रसानाम् (rasānām) - of tastes (of juices/essences); उत्तमम् (uttamam) - the best; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; फलानाम् (phalānām) - of fruits; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - the best;]
(Supreme medicine indeed this; of knowledges this excellent; of tastes the best and this; of fruits and this the best.)
This is indeed the supreme medicine, the highest of all knowledges, the best among all tastes, and the best among fruits. (13-64-8)
फलकामो यशस्कामः पुष्टिकामश्च नित्यदा। घृतं दद्याद्द्विजातिभ्यः पुरुषः शुचिरात्मवान् ॥१३-६४-९॥
phalakāmo yaśaskāmaḥ puṣṭikāmaś ca nityadā। ghṛtaṃ dadyād dvijātibhyaḥ puruṣaḥ śucir ātmavān ॥13-64-9॥
[फलकामः (phalakāmaḥ) - desirous of reward; यशस्कामः (yaśaskāmaḥ) - desirous of fame; पुष्टिकामः (puṣṭikāmaḥ) - desirous of nourishment; च (ca) - and; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always; घृतम् (ghṛtam) - ghee; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; द्विजातिभ्यः (dvijātibhyaḥ) - to the twice-born (Brāhmaṇa, Kṣatriya, Vaiśya); पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; आत्मवान् (ātmavān) - self-possessed;]
(Desirous of reward, desirous of fame, desirous of nourishment, and always, ghee should give to the twice-born the man pure self-possessed.)
A person who desires reward, fame, or nourishment should always, while pure and self-controlled, give ghee to the twice-born. (13-64-9)
घृतं मासे आश्वयुजि विप्रेभ्यो यः प्रयच्छति। तस्मै प्रयच्छतो रूपं प्रीतौ देवाविहाश्विनौ ॥१३-६४-१०॥
ghṛtaṃ māse āśvayuji viprebhyo yaḥ prayacchati। tasmai prayacchato rūpaṃ prītau devāvihāśvinau॥13-64-10॥
[घृतं (ghṛtam) - clarified butter; मासे (māse) - in the month; आश्वयुजि (āśvayuji) - Āśvayuja (the lunar month); विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; प्रयच्छतः (prayacchataḥ) - who gives; रूपं (rūpam) - form; प्रीतौ (prītau) - being pleased; देवाविह (devāv iha) - the two gods here; अश्विनौ (aśvinau) - the Ashvins;]
(Clarified butter in the month Āśvayuja to the Brāhmaṇas who gives—to him who gives, form, being pleased, the two gods here, the Ashvins.)
Whoever gives clarified butter to Brāhmaṇas in the month of Āśvayuja, the two gods here, the Ashvins, being pleased, grant form (beauty) to that giver. (13-64-10)
पायसं सर्पिषा मिश्रं द्विजेभ्यो यः प्रयच्छति। गृहं तस्य न रक्षांसि धर्षयन्ति कदाचन ॥१३-६४-११॥
pāyasaṃ sarpiṣā miśraṃ dvijebhyo yaḥ prayacchati। gṛhaṃ tasya na rakṣāṃsi dharṣayanti kadācana॥13-64-11॥
[पायसं (pāyasaṃ) - milk-rice; pudding; सर्पिषा (sarpiṣā) - with ghee; मिश्रं (miśraṃ) - mixed; द्विजेभ्यः (dvijebhyaḥ) - to Brahmins; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; तस्य (tasya) - of him; न (na) - not; रक्षांसि (rakṣāṃsi) - demons; धर्षयन्ति (dharṣayanti) - violate; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever;]
(Milk-rice mixed with ghee to Brahmins who gives, the house of him not demons violate ever.)
He who gives milk-rice mixed with ghee to Brahmins, demons never violate his house. (13-64-11)
पिपासया न म्रियते सोपच्छन्दश्च दृश्यते। न प्राप्नुयाच्च व्यसनं करकान्यः प्रयच्छति ॥१३-६४-१२॥
pipāsayā na mriyate sopacchandaś ca dṛśyate। na prāpnuyāc ca vyasanaṃ karakānyaḥ prayacchati ॥13-64-12॥
[पिपासया (pipāsayā) - by thirst; न (na) - not; म्रियते (mriyate) - he dies; सः (saḥ) - he; उपच्छन्दः (upacchandaḥ) - one with abundance (of means for satisfaction), satisfied; च (ca) - and; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; न (na) - not; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - should attain; च (ca) - and; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - calamity; करक (karaka) - one who can give (goods), donor; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives, bestows;]
(By thirst not he dies; he with abundance and is seen; not should attain and calamity; another donor gives.)
A man does not die from thirst; one with resources is also seen; one should not incur calamity, as another benefactor provides. (13-64-12)
प्रयतो ब्राह्मणाग्रेभ्यः श्रद्धया परया युतः। उपस्पर्शनषड्भागं लभते पुरुषः सदा ॥१३-६४-१३॥
prayato brāhmaṇāgrebhyaḥ śraddhayā parayā yutaḥ। upasparśanaṣaḍbhāgaṃ labhate puruṣaḥ sadā॥13-64-13॥
[प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - with self-control; ब्राह्मणाग्रेभ्यः (brāhmaṇāgrebhyaḥ) - from the foremost brāhmaṇas; श्रद्धया (śraddhayā) - with faith; परया (parayā) - supreme; युतः (yutaḥ) - endowed; उपस्पर्शन-षड्भागं (upasparśana-ṣaḍbhāgam) - a sixth part of the merit of touching water; लभते (labhate) - obtains; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a person; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(A person, endowed with supreme faith, with self-control, from the foremost brāhmaṇas, always obtains a sixth part of the merit of touching water.)
A person who, with supreme faith and self-control, receives (rites) from the foremost brāhmaṇas, always obtains a sixth share of the merit of the ritual touching of water. (13-64-13)
यः साधनार्थं काष्ठानि ब्राह्मणेभ्यः प्रयच्छति। प्रतापार्थं च राजेन्द्र वृत्तवद्भ्यः सदा नरः ॥१३-६४-१४॥
yaḥ sādhanārthaṁ kāṣṭhāni brāhmaṇebhyaḥ prayacchati। pratāpārthaṁ ca rājendra vṛttavadbhyaḥ sadā naraḥ ॥13-64-14॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; साधनार्थं (sādhanārtham) - for the purpose of ritual implements; काष्ठानि (kāṣṭhāni) - firewood; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives; प्रतापार्थं (pratāpārtham) - for the purpose of prowess; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; वृत्तवद्भ्यः (vṛttavadbhyaḥ) - to those possessing good conduct; सदा (sadā) - always; नरः (naraḥ) - a man;]
(Who for the purpose of ritual implements gives firewood to the Brāhmaṇas, and for the purpose of prowess, O king, always (gives) to those possessing good conduct, a man.)
O king, whoever gives firewood to Brāhmaṇas for ritual purposes and (gives) to the virtuous for the sake of valor, such a man always (obtains merit). (13-64-14)
सिध्यन्त्यर्थाः सदा तस्य कार्याणि विविधानि च। उपर्युपरि शत्रूणां वपुषा दीप्यते च सः ॥१३-६४-१५॥
sidhyantyarthāḥ sadā tasya kāryāṇi vividhāni ca। uparyupari śatrūṇāṃ vapuṣā dīpyate ca saḥ॥13-64-15॥
[सिध्यन्त्यर्थाः (sidhyantyarthāḥ) - objectives becoming successful; सदा (sadā) - always; तस्य (tasya) - his; कार्याणि (kāryāṇi) - actions; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; च (ca) - and; उपर्युपरि (uparyupari) - above and above; शत्रूणां (śatrūṇām) - of enemies; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - with form (in body); दीप्यते (dīpyate) - shines; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he;]

भगवांश्चास्य सुप्रीतो वह्निर्भवति नित्यशः। न तं त्यजन्ते पशवः सङ्ग्रामे च जयत्यपि ॥१३-६४-१६॥
bhagavāṁś cāsya suprīto vahnir bhavati nityaśaḥ। na taṁ tyajante paśavaḥ saṅgrāme ca jayaty api॥13-64-16॥
[भगवान् (bhagavān) (bhagavān) - the blessed one; च (ca) (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) (asya) - to him; सुप्रीतः (suprītaḥ) (suprītaḥ) - well-pleased; वह्निः (vahniḥ) (vahniḥ) - Fire (Agni); भवति (bhavati) (bhavati) - becomes; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) (nityaśaḥ) - always; न (na) (na) - not; तम् (tam) (tam) - him; त्यजन्ते (tyajante) (tyajante) - abandon; पशवः (paśavaḥ) (paśavaḥ) - animals; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) (saṅgrāme) - in battle; च (ca) (ca) - and; जयति (jayati) (jayati) - he conquers; अपि (api) (api) - also;]
(The blessed one and to him, well-pleased Fire becomes always; not him abandon animals; in battle and he conquers also.)
And for him, the blessed Fire is always well-pleased; the animals do not abandon him, and even in battle, he is victorious. (13-64-16)
पुत्राञ्छ्रियं च लभते यश्छत्रं सम्प्रयच्छति। चक्षुर्व्याधिं न लभते यज्ञभागमथाश्नुते ॥१३-६४-१७॥
putrāñ śriyaṃ ca labhate yaś chatraṃ samprayacchati। cakṣurvyādhiṃ na labhate yajñabhāgam athāśnute॥13-64-17॥
[पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; श्रियं (śriyam) - wealth; च (ca) - and; लभते (labhate) - obtains; यः (yaḥ) - who; छत्रं (chatram) - umbrella; सम्प्रयच्छति (samprayacchati) - gives; चक्षुः (cakṣuḥ) - eye; व्याधिं (vyādhiṃ) - disease; न (na) - not; लभते (labhate) - obtains; यज्ञभागम् (yajñabhāgam) - share of the sacrifice; अथ (atha) - then; अश्नुते (aśnute) - enjoys;]
(Sons, wealth and, obtains, who umbrella gives. Eye disease not obtains; share of the sacrifice then enjoys.)
Whoever gives an umbrella obtains sons and wealth. He does not incur eye disease and then enjoys a share of the sacrifice. (13-64-17)
निदाघकाले वर्षे वा यश्छत्रं सम्प्रयच्छति। नास्य कश्चिन्मनोदाहः कदाचिदपि जायते ॥ कृच्छ्रात्स विषमाच्चैव विप्र मोक्षमवाप्नुते ॥१३-६४-१८॥
nidāghakāle varṣe vā yaś chatraṃ samprayacchati। nāsya kaścin manodāhaḥ kadācid api jāyate॥ kṛcchrāt sa viṣamāc caiva vipra mokṣam avāpnute॥13-64-18॥
[निदाघकाले (nidāghakāle) - in the season of intense heat; वर्षे (varṣe) - or in the rain; वा (vā) - or; यः (yaḥ) - who; छत्रं (chatraṃ) - umbrella; सम्प्रयच्छति (samprayacchati) - gives; न (na) - not; अस्य (asya) - of him; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; मनोदाहः (manodāhaḥ) - torment of mind; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at any time; अपि (api) - even; जायते (jāyate) - arises; कृच्छ्रात् (kṛcchrāt) - from hardship; स (sa) - he; विषमात् (viṣamāt) - from distress; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विप्र (vipra) - O Brāhmaṇa; मोक्षमवाप्नुते (mokṣam avāpnute) - obtains liberation;]
(In the season of intense heat or in the rain, whoever gives an umbrella, not of him does anyone's torment of mind at any time even arise. From hardship and from distress indeed, O Brāhmaṇa, he obtains liberation. (13-64-18))
Whoever gives an umbrella in intense heat or rain will never suffer mental torment, O Brāhmaṇa; such a person is freed from hardship and distress, and attains liberation. (13-64-18)
प्रदानं सर्वदानानां शकटस्य विशिष्यते। एवमाह महाभागः शाण्डिल्यो भगवानृषिः ॥१३-६४-१९॥
pradānaṃ sarvadānānāṃ śakaṭasya viśiṣyate। evam āha mahābhāgaḥ śāṇḍilyo bhagavān ṛṣiḥ ॥13-64-19॥
