युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

Yudhiṣṭhira said.
दह्यमानाय विप्राय यः प्रयच्छत्युपानहौ। यत्फलं तस्य भवति तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१३-६५-१॥
dahyamānāya viprāya yaḥ prayacchaty upānahau। yatphalaṃ tasya bhavati tan me brūhi pitāmaha ॥13-65-1॥
[दह्यमानाय (dahyamānāya) - to one who is burning; विप्राय (viprāya) - to a brāhmaṇa; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives; उपानहौ (upānahau) - sandals; यत्फलं (yatphalaṃ) - what fruit; तस्य (tasya) - of him; भवति (bhavati) - arises; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O Grandfather;]
(To the one who is burning, to a brāhmaṇa, who gives sandals, what fruit of him arises, that to me tell, O Grandfather.)
O Grandfather, tell me what result accrues to one who gives sandals to a burning (suffering) brāhmaṇa. (13-65-1)
भीष्म उवाच॥

Bhishma said;
उपानहौ प्रयच्छेद्यो ब्राह्मणेभ्यः समाहितः। मर्दते कण्टकान्सर्वान्विषमान्निस्तरत्यपि ॥ स शत्रूणामुपरि च सन्तिष्ठति युधिष्ठिर ॥१३-६५-२॥
upānahau prayaccheddyo brāhmaṇebhyaḥ samāhitaḥ। mardate kaṇṭakān sarvān viṣamān nistaratya pi॥ sa śatrūṇām upari ca santiṣṭhati yudhiṣṭhira॥13-65-2॥
[उपानहौ (upānahau) - sandals; प्रयच्छेत् (prayacchet) - should give; यो (yo) - who; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to Brāhmaṇas; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - self-collected; मर्दते (mardate) - crushes; कण्टकान् (kaṇṭakān) - thorns; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; विषमान् (viṣamān) - uneven (grounds); निस्तरति (nistaratī) - passes beyond; अपि (api) - even; सः (saḥ) - he; शत्रूणाम् (śatrūṇām) - of enemies; उपरि (upari) - above; च (ca) - and; सन्तिष्ठति (santiṣṭhati) - stands; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Sandals should give who to Brāhmaṇas self-collected; crushes thorns all, even uneven (grounds) passes beyond; he of enemies above and stands, Yudhiṣṭhira.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, the self-collected one who gives sandals to Brāhmaṇas crushes all thorns, passes over all uneven places, and stands above his enemies. (13-65-2)
यानं चाश्वतरीयुक्तं तस्य शुभ्रं विशां पते। उपतिष्ठति कौन्तेय रूप्यकाञ्चनभूषणम् ॥ शकटं दम्यसंयुक्तं दत्तं भवति चैव हि ॥१३-६५-३॥
yānaṃ cāśvatarī-yuktaṃ tasya śubhraṃ viśāṃ pate. upatiṣṭhati kaunteya rūpya-kāñcana-bhūṣaṇam ॥ śakaṭaṃ damya-saṃyuktaṃ dattaṃ bhavati caiva hi ॥13-65-3॥
[यानं (yānam) - vehicle; च (ca) - and; अश्वतरीयुक्तं (aśvatarī-yuktam) - yoked with mules; तस्य (tasya) - his; शुभ्रं (śubhram) - white; विशां (viśām) - of people; पते (pate) - o lord; उपतिष्ठति (upatiṣṭhati) - approaches; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; रूप्यकाञ्चनभूषणम् (rūpya-kāñcana-bhūṣaṇam) - adorned with silver and gold ornaments; शकटं (śakaṭam) - cart; दम्यसंयुक्तं (damya-saṃyuktam) - joined with yokes (reins); दत्तं (dattam) - given; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - surely;]
(Vehicle and yoked with mules, his white, O lord of people, approaches, O Kaunteya, adorned with silver and gold ornaments. Cart joined with reins, given, becomes and indeed surely.)
O Kaunteya, a vehicle yoked with mules, white and adorned with silver and gold ornaments, approaches him, O lord of people. Likewise, a cart joined with reins, when given, surely accrues (to the giver also). (13-65-3)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

Yudhiṣṭhira said.
यत्फलं तिलदाने च भूमिदाने च कीर्तितम्। गोप्रदानेऽन्नदाने च भूयस्तद्ब्रूहि कौरव ॥१३-६५-४॥
yat phalaṃ tiladāne ca bhūmidāne ca kīrtitam। gopradāne'nnadāne ca bhūyas tad brūhi kaurava ॥13-65-4॥
[यत् (yat) - which; that; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; result; तिलदाने (tiladāne) - in the giving of sesame; च (ca) - and; भूमिदाने (bhūmidāne) - in the giving of land; च (ca) - and; कीर्तितम् (kīrtitam) - said; stated; गोप्रदाने (gopradāne) - in the giving of cows; अन्नदाने (annadāne) - in the giving of food; च (ca) - and; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - exceeding; moreover; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; say; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava;]
(Which result in the giving of sesame and in the giving of land is stated, and in the giving of cows and in the giving of food and moreover— that tell, O Kaurava.)
O Kaurava, tell me what result is stated regarding the giving of sesame, of land, of cows, and of food, and also what is said to be greater. (13-65-4)

शृणुष्व मम कौन्तेय तिलदानस्य यत्फलम्। निशम्य च यथान्यायं प्रयच्छ कुरुसत्तम ॥१३-६५-५॥
śṛṇuṣva mama kaunteya tiladānasya yatphalam | niśamya ca yathānyāyaṃ prayaccha kurusattama ॥13-65-5॥
[शृणुष्व (śṛṇuṣva) - hear; मम (mama) - my; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; तिलदानस्य (tiladānasya) - of sesame-giving; यत् (yat) - what; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; च (ca) - and; यथान्यायम् (yathānyāyam) - according to justice; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; कुरुसत्तम (kurusattama) - O best of Kurus;]
(Hear my O son of Kunti, of sesame-giving what fruit. Having heard and according to justice give, O best of Kurus.)
O son of Kunti, hear from me the fruit of giving sesame seeds. Having heard and according to what is right, offer (them), O best of Kurus. (13-65-5)
पितॄणां प्रथमं भोज्यं तिलाः सृष्टाः स्वयम्भुवा। तिलदानेन वै तस्मात्पितृपक्षः प्रमोदते ॥१३-६५-६॥
pitṝṇāṁ prathamaṁ bhojyaṁ tilāḥ sṛṣṭāḥ svayambhuvā। tiladānena vai tasmātpitṛpakṣaḥ pramodate ॥13-65-6॥
[पितॄणां (pitṝṇām) - of the ancestors; प्रथमं (prathamaṁ) - the first; भोज्यं (bhojyaṁ) - food; तिलाः (tilāḥ) - sesame seeds; सृष्टाः (sṛṣṭāḥ) - created; स्वयम्भुवा (svayambhuvā) - by Svayambhū (the self-born); तिलदानेन (tiladānena) - by the gift of sesame seeds; वै (vai) - indeed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; पितृपक्षः (pitṛpakṣaḥ) - the lineage of ancestors; प्रमोदते (pramodate) - rejoices;]
(Of the ancestors, the first food, sesame seeds, were created by Svayambhū. By the gift of sesame seeds indeed, therefore, the lineage of ancestors rejoices.)
Sesame seeds were created by Svayambhū as the first food for the ancestors. Therefore, by offering sesame seeds, the ancestors' lineage is delighted. (13-65-6)
माघमासे तिलान्यस्तु ब्राह्मणेभ्यः प्रयच्छति। सर्वसत्त्वसमाकीर्णं नरकं स न पश्यति ॥१३-६५-७॥
māghamāse tilāny astu brāhmaṇebhyaḥ prayacchati। sarvasattvasamākīrṇaṃ narakaṃ sa na paśyati॥13-65-7॥
[माघमासे (māghamāse) - in the month of Māgha; तिलानि (tilāni) - sesame seeds; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to Brāhmaṇas; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives; सर्वसत्त्वसमाकीर्णं (sarvasattvasamākīrṇam) - filled with all beings; नरकं (narakam) - hell; स (sa) - he; न (na) - not; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees;]
(In the month of Māgha, who but gives sesame seeds to Brāhmaṇas, hell filled with all beings he does not see.)
Whoever gives sesame seeds to Brāhmaṇas in the month of Māgha does not see hell crowded with all beings. (13-65-7)
सर्वकामैः स यजते यस्तिलैर्यजते पितॄन्। न चाकामेन दातव्यं तिलश्राद्धं कथञ्चन ॥१३-६५-८॥
sarvakāmaiḥ sa yajate yaḥ tilair yajate pitṝn। na cākāmena dātavyaṃ tilaśrāddhaṃ kathañcana ॥13-65-8॥
[सर्वकामैः (sarvakāmaiḥ) - with all desires; सः (saḥ) - he; यजते (yajate) - sacrifices; यः (yaḥ) - he who; तिलैः (tilaiḥ) - with sesame seeds; यजते (yajate) - sacrifices; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अकामेन (akāmena) - without desire; दातव्यम् (dātavyam) - should be given; तिलश्राद्धम् (tilaśrāddham) - offering of sesame; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
(With all desires, he sacrifices who, with sesame seeds sacrifices to the ancestors. Not and without desire, should be given sesame offering in any way.)
He who performs the ancestral sacrifice with sesame seeds offers (it) with all his desires. The sesame rite should not at all be given without desire. (13-65-8)
महर्षेः कश्यपस्यैते गात्रेभ्यः प्रसृतास्तिलाः। ततो दिव्यं गता भावं प्रदानेषु तिलाः प्रभो ॥१३-६५-९॥
maharṣeḥ kaśyapasyaite gātrebhyaḥ prasṛtāstilāḥ। tato divyaṃ gatā bhāvaṃ pradāneṣu tilāḥ prabho ॥13-65-9॥
[महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; कश्यपस्य (kaśyapasya) - of Kaśyapa; एते (ete) - these; गात्रेभ्यः (gātrebhyaḥ) - from the limbs; प्रसृताः (prasṛtāḥ) - emerged; तिलाः (tilāḥ) - sesame seeds; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; दिव्यं (divyaṃ) - divine; गताः (gatāḥ) - attained; भावं (bhāvaṃ) - state; प्रदानेषु (pradāneṣu) - in offerings; तिलाः (tilāḥ) - sesame seeds; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Of the great sage Kaśyapa, these sesame seeds emerged from the limbs; from that, attaining the divine state, in offerings sesame seeds, O lord.)
O lord, these sesame seeds sprang from the body of the great sage Kaśyapa; therefore, sesame seeds possess a divine nature when offered.
पौष्टिका रूपदाश्चैव तथा पापविनाशनाः। तस्मात्सर्वप्रदानेभ्यस्तिलदानं विशिष्यते ॥१३-६५-१०॥
pauṣṭikā rūpadāś caiva tathā pāpavināśanāḥ। tasmāt sarvapradānebhyaḥ tiladānaṃ viśiṣyate ॥13-65-10॥
[पौष्टिकाः (pauṣṭikāḥ) - nourishing; रूपदाः (rūpadāḥ) - givers of beauty; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तथा (tathā) - also; पापविनाशनाः (pāpavināśanāḥ) - destroyers of sin; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्वप्रदानेभ्यः (sarvapradānebhyaḥ) - than all other gifts; तिलदानम् (tiladānam) - gift of sesame; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is distinguished;]
(Nourishing, givers of beauty, and also destroyers of sin, therefore, than all other gifts, the gift of sesame is distinguished.)
Sesame is nourishing, confers beauty, and destroys sin; therefore, among all gifts, the giving of sesame is considered superior. (13-65-10)
आपस्तम्बश्च मेधावी शङ्खश्च लिखितस्तथा। महर्षिर्गौतमश्चापि तिलदानैर्दिवं गताः ॥१३-६५-११॥
āpastambaś ca medhāvī śaṅkhaś ca likhitas tathā। maharṣir gautamaś cāpi tiladānair divaṃ gatāḥ ॥13-65-11॥
[आपस्तम्बश्च (āpastambaś ca) - Āpastamba and; मेधावी (medhāvī) - Medhāvī; शङ्खश्च (śaṅkhaś ca) - Śaṅkha also; लिखितस्तथा (likhitas tathā) - Likhita likewise; महर्षिर्गौतमश्चापि (maharṣir gautamaś ca api) - the great ṛṣi Gautama also; तिलदानैः (tiladānair) - by offerings of sesame; दिवं (divam) - to heaven; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone;]
(Āpastamba and Medhāvī, Śaṅkha also, Likhita likewise, the great ṛṣi Gautama also, by offerings of sesame, to heaven have gone.)
Āpastamba, Medhāvī, Śaṅkha, Likhita, and the great sage Gautama have all attained heaven by gifts of sesame. (13-65-11)
तिलहोमपरा विप्राः सर्वे संयतमैथुनाः। समा गव्येन हविषा प्रवृत्तिषु च संस्थिताः ॥१३-६५-१२॥
tilahomaparā viprāḥ sarve saṃyatamaithunāḥ| samā gavvena haviṣā pravṛttiṣu ca saṃsthitāḥ ॥13-65-12॥
[तिलहोमपरा (tilahomaparā) - engaged in sesame oblations; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; संयतमैथुनाः (saṃyatamaithunāḥ) - restrained in sexual union; समा (samā) - year; गव्येन (gavvena) - with cow's (product, i.e., clarified butter); हविषा (haviṣā) - by oblation; प्रवृत्तिषु (pravṛttiṣu) - in activities; च (ca) - and; संस्थिताः (saṃsthitāḥ) - established;]
(Engaged in sesame oblations, all Brāhmaṇas, restrained in sexual union, (for) a year, with cow's clarified butter as oblation, and established in activities.)
All Brāhmaṇas, devoted to sesame oblations, self-restrained in sexual union, for a year, established in the proper rites with sacrificial offerings of cow’s ghee. (13-65-12)
सर्वेषामेव दानानां तिलदानं परं स्मृतम्। अक्षयं सर्वदानानां तिलदानमिहोच्यते ॥१३-६५-१३॥
sarveṣāmeva dānānāṃ tiladānaṃ paraṃ smṛtam। akṣayaṃ sarvadānānāṃ tiladānamihocyate ॥13-65-13॥
[सर्वेषामेव (sarveṣāmeva) - of all (truly); दानानां (dānānāṃ) - of gifts; तिलदानं (tiladānaṃ) - the gift of sesame; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is declared; अक्षयं (akṣayam) - imperishable; सर्वदानानां (sarvadānānāṃ) - of all gifts; तिलदानम् (tiladānam) - the gift of sesame; इह (iha) - here; उच्यते (ucyate) - is stated;]
(Of all (truly) of gifts, the gift of sesame supreme is declared. Imperishable, of all gifts, the gift of sesame here is stated.)
Truly among all gifts, the gift of sesame is considered the highest. Among all gifts, the gift of sesame is here said to be imperishable. (13-65-13)
उत्पन्ने च पुरा हव्ये कुशिकर्षिः परन्तप। तिलैरग्नित्रयं हुत्वा प्राप्तवान्गतिमुत्तमाम् ॥१३-६५-१४॥
utpanne ca purā havye kuśikarṣiḥ parantapa | tilair agni-trayaṃ hutvā prāptavān gatim uttamām ||13-65-14||
[उत्पन्ने (utpanne) - having arisen;, च (ca) - and;, पुरा (purā) - formerly;, हव्ये (havye) - in the oblation;, कुशिकर्षिः (kuśikarṣiḥ) - the sage Kuśika;, परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;, तिलैः (tilaiḥ) - with sesame seeds;, अग्नित्रयं (agni-trayam) - the three fires;, हुत्वा (hutvā) - having offered (in oblation);, प्राप्तवान् (prāptavān) - obtained;, गतिम् (gatim) - state;, उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - excellent;.;]
(And when the oblation had arisen, formerly, the sage Kuśika, O scorcher of foes, having offered the three fires with sesame seeds, obtained the excellent state.)
Long ago, when the oblation was prepared, the sage Kuśika, O scorcher of foes, having offered the three fires with sesame seeds, attained the highest state. (13-65-14)
इति प्रोक्तं कुरुश्रेष्ठ तिलदानमनुत्तमम्। विधानं येन विधिना तिलानामिह शस्यते ॥१३-६५-१५॥
iti proktaṃ kuruśreṣṭha tiladānam-anuttamam। vidhānaṃ yena vidhinā tilānām-iha śasyate ॥13-65-15॥
[इति (iti) - thus; प्रोक्तं (proktam) - said; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kuru(s); तिलदानम् (tiladānam) - the gift of sesame; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; विधानं (vidhānam) - procedure; येन् (yena) - by which; विधिना (vidhinā) - method; तिलानाम् (tilānām) - of sesame; इह (iha) - here; शस्यते (śasyate) - is praised;]
(Thus has been said, O best of the Kuru(s), the unsurpassed gift of sesame. The procedure by which, by which method, of sesame, here is praised. (13-65-15))
Thus, O best of the Kurus, the unsurpassed gift of sesame has been described. Here the procedure by which the offering of sesame is praised is given. (13-65-15)
अत ऊर्ध्वं निबोधेदं देवानां यष्टुमिच्छताम्। समागमं महाराज ब्रह्मणा वै स्वयम्भुवा ॥१३-६५-१६॥
ata ūrdhvaṁ nibodhedaṁ devānāṁ yaṣṭum icchatām। samāgamaṁ mahārāja brahmaṇā vai svayambhuvā॥13-65-16॥
[अत (ata) - from here; then; after this; ऊर्ध्वं (ūrdhvaṁ) - further; above; afterwards; निबोध (nibodha) - know; understand; इदं (idaṁ) - this; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; यष्टुम् (yaṣṭum) - to worship; to sacrifice; इच्छताम् (icchatām) - desiring; of those wishing; समागमं (samāgamam) - gathering; assembly; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahma; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; स्वयम्भुवा (svayambhuvā) - by the Self-born;]
(Then, further, know this assembly of the gods desiring to worship, O great king, by Brahma, indeed, by the Self-born.)
O great king, now further know this assembly of the gods who wished to offer worship, which was indeed convened by Brahma, the Self-born. (13-65-16)
देवाः समेत्य ब्रह्माणं भूमिभागं यियक्षवः। शुभं देशमयाचन्त यजेम इति पार्थिव ॥१३-६५-१७॥
devāḥ sametya brahmāṇaṁ bhūmibhāgaṁ yiyakṣavaḥ। śubhaṁ deśam ayācanta yajema iti pārthiva ॥13-65-17॥
[देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; ब्रह्माणं (brahmāṇam) - to Brahmā; भूमि (bhūmi) - earth; भागं (bhāgam) - a portion; यियक्षवः (yiyakṣavaḥ) - desiring to sacrifice; शुभं (śubham) - auspicious; देशम् (deśam) - land; अयाचन्त (ayācanta) - they requested; यजेम (yajema) - "let us sacrifice"; इति (iti) - thus; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(gods having assembled to Brahmā a portion of earth desiring to sacrifice, auspicious land they requested "let us sacrifice" thus O king)
O king, the gods, having assembled, desiring to perform a sacrifice, requested Brahmā for an auspicious piece of land on earth, saying, "Let us sacrifice." (13-65-17)
देवा ऊचुः॥

The gods said.
भगवंस्त्वं प्रभुर्भूमेः सर्वस्य त्रिदिवस्य च। यजेमहि महाभाग यज्ञं भवदनुज्ञया ॥ नाननुज्ञातभूमिर्हि यज्ञस्य फलमश्नुते ॥१३-६५-१८॥
bhagavaṁs tvaṁ prabhur bhūmeḥ sarvasya tridivasya ca। yajema hi mahābhāga yajñaṁ bhavad-anujñayā॥ nānanujñāta-bhūmir hi yajñasya phalam aśnute॥13-65-18॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of the earth; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; त्रिदिवस्य (tridivasya) - of the threefold heaven; च (ca) - and; यजेमहि (yajemahi) - let us offer sacrifice; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate; यज्ञं (yajñam) - sacrifice; भवत् (bhavat) - your; अनुज्ञया (anujñayā) - by permission; न (na) - not; अनुज्ञातभूमिः (anujñāta-bhūmiḥ) - ground (land) given permission; हि (hi) - indeed; यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of sacrifice; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अश्नुते (aśnute) - obtains;]
(O revered one, you, lord of the earth, of all, of the threefold heaven and; let us offer sacrifice, O greatly fortunate, sacrifice by your permission. Not land given permission indeed of sacrifice fruit obtains. (13-65-18))
O revered one, you are the lord of the earth, of all and of the threefold heaven; O greatly fortunate, let us perform the sacrifice by your permission. For land not permitted does not indeed yield the fruit of sacrifice. (13-65-18)
त्वं हि सर्वस्य जगतः स्थावरस्य चरस्य च। प्रभुर्भवसि तस्मात्त्वं समनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥१३-६५-१९॥
tvaṃ hi sarvasya jagataḥ sthāvarasya carasya ca। prabhuḥ bhavasi tasmāt tvaṃ samanugñātum arhasi॥13-65-19॥

(You indeed of all the world, of the stationary, of the moving, and master you are; therefore, you to permit are worthy.)
You are indeed the master of all the world, both the stationary and the moving; therefore, you alone are worthy to grant permission. (13-65-19)

[ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; मेदिनीभागं (medinībhāgam) - portion of the earth; भवद्भ्यः (bhavadbhyaḥ) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; सुरर्षभाः (surarṣabhāḥ) - O best of the gods; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; देशे (deśe) - place; करिष्यध्वम् (kariṣyadhvam) - you will perform; यज्ञं (yajñam) - sacrifice; काश्यपनन्दनाः (kāśyapanandanāḥ) - descendants of Kaśyapa;]
(I give portion of the earth to you, I, O best of the gods. In which place you will perform sacrifice, O descendants of Kaśyapa.)
O best of the gods, I give you a portion of the earth. In whichever place you, descendants of Kaśyapa, will perform sacrifice.

(O revered one, we are those whose desires have been fulfilled; we shall worship with proper offerings. But this place, the sages always constantly revered.)

Then Agastya, Kanva, Bhrigu, Atri, Vṛṣākapi, Asita, and Devala also came to the divine sacrifice. (13-65-22)
ततो देवा महात्मान ईजिरे यज्ञमच्युत। तथा समापयामासुर्यथाकालं सुरर्षभाः ॥१३-६५-२३॥
tato devā mahātmāna ījire yajñam acyuta। tathā samāpayāmāsur yathā-kālaṃ surarṣabhāḥ॥13-65-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; ईजिरे (ījire) - sacrificed (performed sacrifice); यज्ञम् (yajñam) - sacrifice; अच्युत (acyuta) - to the infallible (Acyuta); तथा (tathā) - thus; समापयामासुः (samāpayāmāsuḥ) - they completed; यथाकालम् (yathā-kālam) - according to time; सुरर्षभाः (surarṣabhāḥ) - best among the gods;]
(Then the gods, the great-souled ones, sacrificed the sacrifice to Acyuta. Thus, the best among the gods completed (it) according to time.)
Then the gods of great soul performed the sacrifice for Acyuta. In this way, the best among the gods completed it at the proper time. (13-65-23)
त इष्टयज्ञास्त्रिदशा हिमवत्यचलोत्तमे। षष्ठमंशं क्रतोस्तस्य भूमिदानं प्रचक्रिरे ॥१३-६५-२४॥
ta iṣṭayajñās tridaśā himavaty acalottame। ṣaṣṭham aṁśaṁ kratos tasya bhūmidānaṁ pracakrire ॥13-65-24॥
[त (ta) - they; इष्टयज्ञाः (iṣṭayajñāḥ) - sacrificial worshippers; त्रिदशाः (tridaśāḥ) - the thirty-three gods; हिमवति (himavati) - in Himavat (Himalaya); अचलोत्तमे (acalottame) - in the greatest of mountains; षष्ठम् (ṣaṣṭham) - sixth; अंशम् (aṁśam) - portion; क्रतोः (kratoḥ) - of the sacrifice; तस्य (tasya) - of it; भूमिदानम् (bhūmidānam) - giving of land; प्रचक्रिरे (pracakrire) - performed;]
(They, the sacrificial worshippers, the thirty-three gods, in Himavat, in the greatest of mountains, the sixth portion of the sacrifice, of it, the giving of land, performed.)
There, the thirty-three gods who are expert in sacrifices, performed the giving of land as the sixth portion of the sacrifice, in the great Himavat mountain. (13-65-24)
प्रादेशमात्रं भूमेस्तु यो दद्यादनुपस्कृतम्। न सीदति स कृच्छ्रेषु न च दुर्गाण्यवाप्नुते ॥१३-६५-२५॥
prādeśamātraṃ bhūmes tu yo dadyād anupaskṛtam. na sīdati sa kṛcchreṣu na ca durgāṇy avāpnute ॥13-65-25॥
[प्रादेशमात्रं (prādeśamātram) - of the measure of a pradeśa (hand span); भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of earth; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; अनुपस्कृतम् (anupaskṛtam) - uncultivated; न (na) - not; सीदति (sīdati) - becomes afflicted; स (sa) - he; कृच्छ्रेषु (kṛcchreṣu) - in difficulties; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; दुर्गाणि (durgāṇi) - calamities; अवाप्नुते (avāpnute) - attains;]
(Who gives uncultivated earth of the measure of a hand span, he does not become afflicted in difficulties and does not attain calamities.)
Whoever gives an uncultivated piece of land about a hand span in size does not suffer in times of distress and does not encounter calamities. (13-65-25)
शीतवातातपसहां गृहभूमिं सुसंस्कृताम्। प्रदाय सुरलोकस्थः पुण्यान्तेऽपि न चाल्यते ॥१३-६५-२६॥
śītavātātapasahāṃ gṛhabhūmiṃ susaṃskṛtām। pradāya suralokasthaḥ puṇyānte'pi na cālyate ॥13-65-26॥
[शीत-वात-ातप-सहां (śīta-vāta-ātapa-sahām) - enduring cold, wind, and heat; गृह-भूमिं (gṛha-bhūmiṃ) - house land; सुसंस्कृताम् (susaṃskṛtām) - well-prepared; प्रदाय (pradāya) - giving; सुर-लोक-स्थः (sura-loka-sthaḥ) - one dwelling in the world of gods; पुण्य-अन्तेऽपि (puṇya-ante'pi) - even at the end of merit; न चाल्यते (na cālyate) - is not moved;]
(Enduring cold, wind, and heat, (the) well-prepared house land having given, one dwelling in the world of gods even at the end of merit is not moved.)
Even a resident of the world of gods who has given well-prepared house land capable of withstanding cold, wind, and heat is not displaced even at the end of his merit. (13-65-26)
मुदितो वसते प्राज्ञः शक्रेण सह पार्थिव। प्रतिश्रयप्रदाता च सोऽपि स्वर्गे महीयते ॥१३-६५-२७॥
mudito vasate prājñaḥ śakreṇa saha pārthiva। pratiśrayapradātā ca so'pi svarge mahīyate॥13-65-27॥
[मुदितः (muditaḥ) - rejoicing; वसते (vasate) - dwells; प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - the wise (man); शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - with Indra; सह (saha) - together; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; प्रतिश्रयप्रदाता (pratiśrayapradātā) - the giver of shelter; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Rejoicing dwells the wise man with Indra together, O king. The giver of shelter also, he too in heaven is honored.)
O king, the wise man who rejoices dwells with Indra; and the giver of shelter is also honored in heaven. (13-65-27)
अध्यापककुले जातः श्रोत्रियो नियतेन्द्रियः। गृहे यस्य वसेत्तुष्टः प्रधानं लोकमश्नुते ॥१३-६५-२८॥
adhyāpakakule jātaḥ śrotriyo niyatendriyaḥ। gṛhe yasya vasettuṣṭaḥ pradhānaṃ lokamaśnute॥13-65-28॥
[अध्यापककुले (adhyāpakakule) - in the family of a teacher; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; श्रोत्रियः (śrotriyaḥ) - versed in the Vedas; नियतेन्द्रियः (niyatendriyaḥ) - with controlled senses; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; वसेत् (vaset) - would dwell; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - content; प्रधानम् (pradhānam) - excellence; foremost (or chief); लोकम् (lokam) - world; realm; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains; enjoys;]
(Born in the family of a teacher, versed in the Vedas, with controlled senses— in whose house (such a one) would dwell content, he attains the foremost world.)
He who, content, has living in his house one who was born in the family of a teacher, is versed in the Vedas, and has controlled senses, attains the highest realm. (13-65-28)
तथा गवार्थे शरणं शीतवर्षसहं महत्। आसप्तमं तारयति कुलं भरतसत्तम ॥१३-६५-२९॥
tathā gavā-arthe śaraṇaṃ śīta-varṣa-sahaṃ mahat। ā-saptamam tārayati kulaṃ bharata-sattama ॥13-65-29॥
[तथा (tathā) - likewise; गवार्थे (gavā-arthe) - for the sake of a cow; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; शीतवर्षसहम् (śīta-varṣa-saham) - enduring cold and rain; महत् (mahat) - great; आसप्तमम् (ā-saptamam) - up to the seventh (generation); तारयति (tārayati) - one causes to cross (saves); कुलम् (kulam) - family; भरतसत्तम (bharata-sattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Likewise, for the sake of a cow, a great refuge enduring cold and rain up to the seventh generation causes the family to cross, O best of the Bharatas.)
Likewise, O best of the Bharatas, a great refuge that endures cold and rain for the sake of a cow saves (his) family up to the seventh generation. (13-65-29)
क्षेत्रभूमिं ददल्लोके पुत्र श्रियमवाप्नुयात्। रत्नभूमिं प्रदत्त्वा तु कुलवंशं विवर्धयेत् ॥१३-६५-३०॥
kṣetrabhūmiṃ dadalloke putra śriyamavāpnuyāt। ratnabhūmiṃ pradattvā tu kulavaṃśaṃ vivardhayet॥13-65-30॥
[क्षेत्रभूमिं (kṣetrabhūmiṃ) - field-land (a plot of cultivated land); ददत् (dadat) - giving; लोके (loke) - in the world; पुत्र (putra) - son; श्रियं (śriyam) - prosperity; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - might obtain; रत्नभूमिं (ratnabhūmiṃ) - jewel-land (a land endowed with gems); प्रदत्त्वा (pradattvā) - having given; तु (tu) - but; कुलवंशं (kulavaṃśaṃ) - family lineage; विवर्धयेत् (vivardhayet) - might increase;]
(Giving field-land in the world, a son might obtain prosperity. But having given jewel-land, he might increase (his) family lineage. (13-65-30))
A son who gives field-land in this world may obtain prosperity, but by giving jewel-land, he may increase his family lineage. (13-65-30)
न चोषरां न निर्दग्धां महीं दद्यात्कथञ्चन। न श्मशानपरीतां च न च पापनिषेविताम् ॥१३-६५-३१॥
na coṣarāṃ na nirdagdhāṃ mahīṃ dadyāt kathañcana। na śmaśānaparītāṃ ca na ca pāpaniṣevitām ॥13-65-31॥
[न (na) - not; चोषरां (coṣarām) - barren (land); न (na) - not; निर्दग्धां (nirdagdhām) - completely burnt; महीं (mahīm) - land; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - by any means; न (na) - not; श्मशानपरीतां (śmaśānaparītām) - surrounded by cremation ground; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पापनिषेविताम् (pāpaniṣevitām) - frequented by evil (people or deeds);]
(Not barren, not completely burnt land should one give by any means; nor land surrounded by a cremation ground and not land frequented by evil.)
One should, by no means, give land that is barren, completely burnt, surrounded by a cremation ground, or frequented by evil. (13-65-31)
पारक्ये भूमिदेशे तु पितॄणां निर्वपेत्तु यः। तद्भूमिस्वामिपितृभिः श्राद्धकर्म विहन्यते ॥१३-६५-३२॥
pārakye bhūmideśe tu pitṝṇāṃ nirvapettu yaḥ। tadbhūmisvāmipitṛbhiḥ śrāddhakarma vihanyate ॥13-65-32॥
[पारक्ये (pārakye) - belonging to another; (locative); भूमिदेशे (bhūmideśe) - in the land or region; (locative); तु (tu) - but; पितॄणां (pitṝṇāṃ) - of the ancestors; निर्वपेत् (nirvapet) - offers (performs an offering); तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; तद्भूमिस्वामिपितृभिः (tadbhūmisvāmi-pitṛbhiḥ) - by the ancestors of that land's owner; श्राद्धकर्म (śrāddhakarma) - the śrāddha-rite (rite for ancestors); विहन्यते (vihanyate) - is obstructed (prevented);]
(In another's land or region but for the ancestors, whoever offers, but, by the ancestors of that land's owner, the śrāddha-rite is obstructed.)
If one offers śrāddha for one's ancestors on another's land, the śrāddha-rite is obstructed by the ancestors of the owner of that land. (13-65-32)
तस्मात्क्रीत्वा महीं दद्यात्स्वल्पामपि विचक्षणः। पिण्डः पितृभ्यो दत्तो वै तस्यां भवति शाश्वतः ॥१३-६५-३३॥
tasmātkṛtvā mahīṁ dadyātsvalpāmapi vicakṣaṇaḥ. piṇḍaḥ pitṛbhyo datto vai tasyāṁ bhavati śāśvataḥ ॥13-65-33॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; क्रीत्वा (kṛtvā) - having bought; महीं (mahīṁ) - land; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; स्वल्पाम् (svalpām) - a little; अपि (api) - even; विचक्षणः (vicakṣaṇaḥ) - the wise one; पिण्डः (piṇḍaḥ) - the oblation of rice (piṇḍa); पितृभ्यः (pitṛbhyaḥ) - to the ancestors; दत्तः (dattaḥ) - offered; वै (vai) - indeed; तस्याम् (tasyām) - on that (land); भवति (bhavati) - becomes; शाश्वतः (śāśvataḥ) - perpetual;]
(Therefore having bought land, the wise one should give (even) a little; the oblation of rice offered to the ancestors indeed on that (land) becomes perpetual.)
Therefore, the wise person, even after acquiring a little land, should offer it; for an offering of rice to the ancestors, when given on such land, becomes everlasting. (13-65-33)
अटवीपर्वताश्चैव नदीतीर्थानि यानि च। सर्वाण्यस्वामिकान्याहुर्न हि तत्र परिग्रहः ॥१३-६५-३४॥
aṭavīparvatāścaiva nadītīrthāni yāni ca। sarvāṇyasvāmikānyāhurna hi tatra parigrahaḥ ॥13-65-34॥
[अटवी (aṭavī) - forest; पर्वताः (parvatāḥ) - mountains; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नदी (nadī) - river; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - fords; यानि (yāni) - which; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; अस्वामिकानि (asvāmikāni) - ownerless; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; तत्र (tatra) - there; परिग्रहः (parigrahaḥ) - possession;]
(Forests mountains and indeed river fords which and all ownerless they say not indeed there possession.)
They say that all forests, mountains, and river fords are ownerless, and possession is not permitted there. (13-65-34)
इत्येतद्भूमिदानस्य फलमुक्तं विशां पते। अतः परं तु गोदानं कीर्तयिष्यामि तेऽनघ ॥१३-६५-३५॥
ity etad bhūmi-dānasya phalam uktaṁ viśāṁ pate. ataḥ paraṁ tu go-dānaṁ kīrtayiṣyāmi te 'nagha ॥13-65-35॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; भूमिदानस्य (bhūmi-dānasya) - of the donation of land; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; विशां (viśām) - of the men; पते (pate) - O lord; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; परम् (param) - next; तु (tu) - but; गोदानम् (go-dānam) - cow-gift; कीर्तयिष्यामि (kīrtayiṣyāmi) - I shall proclaim; ते (te) - to you; अनघ ('anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Thus this, of land donation, fruit spoken, O lord of men. Therefore next but cow-gift I shall proclaim to you, O sinless one.)
Thus the fruit of land donation has been spoken, O lord of men. Now, I shall proclaim to you the giving of cows, O sinless one. (13-65-35)
गावोऽधिकास्तपस्विभ्यो यस्मात्सर्वेभ्य एव च। तस्मान्महेश्वरो देवस्तपस्ताभिः समास्थितः ॥१३-६५-३६॥
gāvo'dhikāstapasvibhyo yasmātsarvebhya eva ca। tasmānmaheśvaro devastapastābhiḥ samāsthitaḥ ॥13-65-36॥
[गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; अधिकाः (adhikāḥ) - superior; तपस्विभ्यः (tapasvibhyaḥ) - to ascetics; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; सर्वेभ्यः (sarvebhyaḥ) - to all; एव (eva) - certainly; च (ca) - and; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; महेश्वरः (maheśvaraḥ) - great lord; देवः (devaḥ) - god; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; ताभिः (tābhiḥ) - by them; समास्थितः (samāsthitaḥ) - undertook;]
(Cows are superior to ascetics because to all certainly and; therefore the great lord god austerity by them undertook.)
Cows are even superior to all ascetics; therefore, the great lord Maheshvara (Shiva) undertook austerities using them. (13-65-36)
ब्रह्मलोके वसन्त्येताः सोमेन सह भारत। आसां ब्रह्मर्षयः सिद्धाः प्रार्थयन्ति परां गतिम् ॥१३-६५-३७॥
brahmaloke vasanty etāḥ somena saha bhārata. āsāṃ brahmarṣayaḥ siddhāḥ prārthayanti parāṃ gatim ॥13-65-37॥
[ब्रह्मलोके (brahmaloke) - in the world of Brahma; वसन्ति (vasanti) - dwell; एताः (etāḥ) - these (women); सोमेन (somena) - with Soma; सह (saha) - together; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; आसां (āsāṃ) - of these (women); ब्रह्मर्षयः (brahmarṣayaḥ) - Brahmarṣis; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; प्रार्थयन्ति (prārthayanti) - pray for; परां (parām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - goal;]
(In the world of Brahma, these dwell together with Soma, O Bhārata. Of these, the Brahmarṣis and siddhas pray for the supreme goal.)
O Bhārata, these women dwell in Brahma's world together with Soma; the Brahmarṣis and siddhas among them pray for the supreme state. (13-65-37)
पयसा हविषा दध्ना शकृताप्यथ चर्मणा। अस्थिभिश्चोपकुर्वन्ति शृङ्गैर्वालैश्च भारत ॥१३-६५-३८॥
payasā haviṣā dadhnā śakṛdāpyatha carmaṇā| asthibhiścopakurvanti śṛṅgairvālaiśca bhārata ॥13-65-38॥
[पयसा (payasā) - with milk; हविषा (haviṣā) - with oblation; दध्ना (dadhnā) - with curd; शकृतापि (śakṛdā api) - also with dung; अथ (atha) - and; चर्मणा (carmaṇā) - with hide; अस्थिभिः (asthibhiḥ) - with bones; च (ca) - and; उपकुर्वन्ति (upakurvanti) - they perform service; शृङ्गैः (śṛṅgaiḥ) - with horns; वालैः (vālaiḥ) - with tails; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(With milk, with oblation, with curd, also with dung, and with hide, with bones and they perform service with horns and tails, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, with milk, oblation, curd, even dung, hide, bones, as well as with horns and tails, they perform service.
नासां शीतातपौ स्यातां सदैताः कर्म कुर्वते। न वर्षं विषमं वापि दुःखमासां भवत्युत ॥१३-६५-३९॥
nāsāṃ śītātapau syātāṃ sadaitāḥ karma kurvate। na varṣaṃ viṣamaṃ vāpi duḥkham āsāṃ bhavaty uta॥13-65-39॥
[नासां (nāsāṃ) - not of them; शीतातपौ (śītātapau) - cold and heat; स्यातां (syātāṃ) - there is (for them); सदा (sadā) - always; एताः (etāḥ) - they (these, feminine); कर्म (karma) - action; कुर्वते (kurvate) - perform; न (na) - not; वर्षं (varṣam) - rain (year); विषमं (viṣamam) - difficult; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; आसां (āsāṃ) - of them; भवति (bhavati) - there is; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Not of them cold and heat there is; always these actions perform. Not rain, difficult or also suffering of them there is indeed.)
For them, there is neither cold nor heat; these always perform their actions. For them, neither rain, nor any difficulty, nor suffering exists indeed. (13-65-39)
ब्राह्मणैः सहिता यान्ति तस्मात्परतरं पदम्। एकं गोब्राह्मणं तस्मात्प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः ॥१३-६५-४०॥
brāhmaṇaiḥ sahitā yānti tasmāt parataraṃ padam। ekaṃ gobrāhmaṇaṃ tasmāt pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ ॥13-65-40॥
[ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - with Brāhmaṇas; सहिता (sahitā) - together; joined; यान्ति (yānti) - they go; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; therefore; परतरं (parataraṃ) - higher; superior; पदम् (padam) - state; position; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; single; गोब्राह्मणं (gobrāhmaṇam) - cow and Brāhmaṇa; (compound: go + brāhmaṇa); तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; प्रवदन्ति (pravadanti) - they declare; they say; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise ones; sages;]
(With Brāhmaṇas joined they go from that to the higher state. Therefore, one cow-and-Brāhmaṇa, therefore, the wise ones declare.)
With Brāhmaṇas united, they attain the highest state; therefore, the wise call cow and Brāhmaṇa one. (13-65-40)
रन्तिदेवस्य यज्ञे ताः पशुत्वेनोपकल्पिताः। ततश्चर्मण्वती राजन्गोचर्मभ्यः प्रवर्तिता ॥१३-६५-४१॥
rantidevasya yajñe tāḥ paśutvenopakalpitāḥ। tataś carmaṇvatī rājan go-carmabhyaḥ pravartitā ॥13-65-41॥
[रन्तिदेवस्य (rantidevasya) - of Rantideva; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in the sacrifice; ताः (tāḥ) - those (they); पशुत्वेन (paśutvena) - as animals; by the status of animals; उपकल्पिताः (upakalpitāḥ) - prepared; designated; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; thereafter; चर्मण्वती (carmaṇvatī) - Carmaṇvatī (the river); राजन् (rājan) - O king; गोचर्मभ्यः (go-carmabhyaḥ) - from the cow hides; प्रवर्तिता (pravartitā) - caused to flow; set in motion;]
(In the sacrifice of Rantideva, those (victims) were appointed in the status of animals. Thereafter, O king, the river Carmaṇvatī was set in motion from (the) cow hides.)
At Rantideva's sacrifice, those were designated as animals. Afterwards, O king, the river Carmaṇvatī was caused to flow from cow hides. (13-65-41)
पशुत्वाच्च विनिर्मुक्ताः प्रदानायोपकल्पिताः। ता इमा विप्रमुख्येभ्यो यो ददाति महीपते ॥ निस्तरेदापदं कृच्छ्रां विषमस्थोऽपि पार्थिव ॥१३-६५-४२॥
paśutvācca vinirmuktāḥ pradānāyopakalpitāḥ। tā imā vipramukhyebhyo yo dadāti mahīpate ॥ nistaredāpadaṃ kṛcchrāṃ viṣamastho'pi pārthiva ॥13-65-42॥
[पशुत्वात् (paśutvāt) - from animalhood; च (ca) - and; विनिर्मुक्ताः (vinirmuktāḥ) - freed; प्रदानाय (pradānāya) - for giving; उपकल्पिताः (upakalpitāḥ) - prepared; ता (tā) - those (feminine, plural); इमा (imā) - these; विप्रमुख्येभ्यः (vipramukhyebhyaḥ) - to the foremost brāhmaṇas; यः (yaḥ) - who; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king; निस्तरेत् (nistaret) - would cross (over); आपदं (āpadaṃ) - danger; कृच्छ्रां (kṛcchrāṃ) - severe; विषमस्थः (viṣamasthaḥ) - in distress; अपि (api) - even; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O ruler;]
(And freed from animalhood, prepared for giving, those, these to the foremost brāhmaṇas, who gives, O king, would cross severe danger, even being in distress, O ruler.)
O king, those (cows) that are freed from animal nature and readied for giving—he who gives these to the principal brāhmaṇas, O ruler, would overcome even great difficulty or danger, even if he himself is in trouble. (13-65-42)
गवां सहस्रदः प्रेत्य नरकं न प्रपश्यति। सर्वत्र विजयं चापि लभते मनुजाधिप ॥१३-६५-४३॥
gavāṃ sahasradaḥ pretya narakaṃ na prapaśyati. sarvatra vijayaṃ cāpi labhate manujādhipa ॥13-65-43॥
[गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; सहस्रदः (sahasradaḥ) - giver of a thousand; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having died; नरकं (narakaṃ) - hell; न (na) - not; प्रपश्यति (prapaśyati) - sees; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; विजयं (vijayaṃ) - victory; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; लभते (labhate) - obtains; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - O lord of men;]
(O lord of men, the giver of a thousand cows, having died, does not see hell; everywhere, he also obtains victory.)
O lord of men, one who gives a thousand cows does not go to hell after death, but everywhere attains victory. (13-65-43)
अमृतं वै गवां क्षीरमित्याह त्रिदशाधिपः। तस्माद्ददाति यो धेनुममृतं स प्रयच्छति ॥१३-६५-४४॥
amṛtaṃ vai gavāṃ kṣīram ity āha tridaśādhipaḥ। tasmād dadāti yo dhenum amṛtaṃ sa prayacchati॥13-65-44॥
[अमृतं (amṛtam) - nectar; (of immortality); वै (vai) - indeed; गवां (gavām) - of cows; (genitive plural of gauḥ); क्षीरम् (kṣīram) - milk; (neuter singular); इति (iti) - thus; (quotation marker); आह (āha) - he said; (perfect, 3rd singular); त्रिदशाधिपः (tridaśādhipaḥ) - the lord of the thirty (gods); Indra; (nominative singular); तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; (present, 3rd singular); यः (yaḥ) - who; (relative pronoun, masculine singular); धेनुम् (dhenum) - a cow; (accusative singular); अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; (of immortality); सः (saḥ) - he; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - bestows; gives completely; (present, 3rd singular);]
(Nectar indeed of cows (is) milk—thus said the lord of the thirty (gods). Therefore, he gives who (gives) a cow, nectar he bestows.)
The milk of cows is indeed nectar, so said the lord of the gods. Therefore, whoever gives a cow gives nectar. (13-65-44)
अग्नीनामव्ययं ह्येतद्धौम्यं वेदविदो विदुः। तस्माद्ददाति यो धेनुं स हौम्यं सम्प्रयच्छति ॥१३-६५-४५॥
agnīnām avyayaṃ hy etad dhaumyaṃ vedavido viduḥ। tasmād dadāti yo dhenuṃ sa haumyaṃ samprayacchati ॥13-65-45॥
[अग्नीनाम् (agnīnām) - of the fires; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - imperishable; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; धौम्यम् (dhaumyam) - relating to Dhaumya (sacrificial priest); वेदविदः (vedavidaḥ) - knowers of the Veda; विदुः (viduḥ) - know; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; यः (yaḥ) - who; धेनुम् (dhenuṃ) - cow; सः (saḥ) - he; हौम्यम् (haumyam) - relating to the Soma-sacrifice; सम्प्रयच्छति (samprayacchati) - bestows;]
(Of the fires the imperishable indeed this Dhaumya (sacrificial priest), knowers of the Veda know. Therefore gives who a cow, he haumya (relating to Soma-sacrifice) bestows.)
This imperishable principle of the fires, known by the Veda-knowers as Dhaumya, whoever gives a cow therefore, he bestows a Soma-sacrificial gift. (13-65-45)
स्वर्गो वै मूर्तिमानेष वृषभं यो गवां पतिम्। विप्रे गुणयुते दद्यात्स वै स्वर्गे महीयते ॥१३-६५-४६॥
svargo vai mūrtimāneṣa vṛṣabhaṃ yo gavāṃ patim। vipre guṇayute dadyāt sa vai svarge mahīyate॥13-65-46॥
[स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; वै (vai) - indeed; मूर्तिमान् (mūrtimān) - embodied; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; वृषभम् (vṛṣabham) - bull; यः (yaḥ) - who; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; पतिम् (patim) - lord; विप्रे (vipre) - to the brāhmaṇa; गुणयुते (guṇayute) - endowed with virtues; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; सः (saḥ) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Heaven indeed is embodied, this (bull), who (is) the lord of cows; to a brāhmaṇa endowed with virtues should one give; he indeed in heaven is honored.)
This bull, the lord of cows, is truly a personification of heaven; one who gives it to a virtuous brāhmaṇa is indeed honored in heaven. (13-65-46)
प्राणा वै प्राणिनामेते प्रोच्यन्ते भरतर्षभ। तस्माद्ददाति यो धेनुं प्राणान्वै स प्रयच्छति ॥१३-६५-४७॥
prāṇā vai prāṇināmete procyante bharatarṣabha। tasmāddadāti yo dhenuṃ prāṇānvai sa prayacchati ॥13-65-47॥
[प्राणा (prāṇā) - vital breaths; वै (vai) - indeed; प्राणिनाम् (prāṇinām) - of living beings; एते (ete) - these; प्रोच्यन्ते (procyante) - are said; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; यः (yaḥ) - who; धेनुम् (dhenuṃ) - cow; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; वै (vai) - indeed; सः (sa) - he; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - bestows;]
(Vital breaths indeed of living beings these are said, O best of the Bharatas. Therefore, whoever gives a cow, life-breaths indeed he bestows.)
O foremost of the Bharatas, these (cows) are said to be the vital breaths of living beings. Therefore, whoever gives a cow truly bestows life itself. (13-65-47)
गावः शरण्या भूतानामिति वेदविदो विदुः। तस्माद्ददाति यो धेनुं शरणं सम्प्रयच्छति ॥१३-६५-४८॥
gāvaḥ śaraṇyā bhūtānām iti vedavido viduḥ। tasmād dadāti yaḥ dhenum śaraṇam samprayacchati ॥13-65-48॥
[गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; शरण्या (śaraṇyā) - worthy of refuge; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; इति (iti) - thus; वेदविदः (vedavidaḥ) - knowers of the Veda; विदुः (viduḥ) - know; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; यः (yaḥ) - who; धेनुम् (dhenum) - cow; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; सम्प्रयच्छति (samprayacchati) - bestows;]
(Cows are worthy of refuge of beings thus knowers of the Veda know. Therefore gives who a cow refuge bestows.)
Those who know the Veda know that cows are a refuge for living beings. Therefore, whoever grants a cow as a refuge bestows protection. (13-65-48)
न वधार्थं प्रदातव्या न कीनाशे न नास्तिके। गोजीविने न दातव्या तथा गौः पुरुषर्षभ ॥१३-६५-४९॥
na vadhārthaṃ pradātavyā na kīnāśe na nāstike। gojīvine na dātavyā tathā gauḥ puruṣarṣabha ॥13-65-49॥
[न (na) - not; वधार्थं (vadhārtham) - for the purpose of killing; प्रदातव्या (pradātavyā) - should be given; न (na) - not; कीनाशे (kīnāśe) - to a destroyer (kīnāśa); न (na) - not; नास्तिके (nāstike) - to an atheist; गोजीविने (gojīvine) - to a cow-eater; न (na) - not; दातव्या (dātavyā) - should be given; तथा (tathā) - likewise; गौः (gauḥ) - cow; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men;]
(Not for the purpose of killing should be given, not to a destroyer, not to an atheist. To a cow-eater should not be given likewise the cow, O best of men (13-65-49))
A cow should not be given for the purpose of slaughter, nor to a destroyer of wealth, nor to an atheist, nor to a cow-eater; likewise, O best of men. (13-65-49)
ददाति तादृशानां वै नरो गाः पापकर्मणाम्। अक्षयं नरकं यातीत्येवमाहुर्मनीषिणः ॥१३-६५-५०॥
dadāti tādṛśānāṃ vai naro gāḥ pāpakarmaṇām। akṣayaṃ narakaṃ yātītyevamāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ ॥13-65-50॥
[ददाति (dadāti) - gives; तादृशानाम् (tādṛśānām) - of such (people); वै (vai) - indeed; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; पापकर्मणाम् (pāpakarmaṇām) - of those with evil deeds; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - endless; नरकम् (narakam) - hell; याति (yāti) - goes; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise ones;]
(A man indeed gives cows of such (people) of those with evil deeds; endless hell he goes thus in this way the wise ones say.)
The wise ones say that a man who gives cows belonging to such evil-doers will certainly go to endless hell. (13-65-50)
न कृशां पापवत्सां वा वन्ध्यां रोगान्वितां तथा। न व्यङ्गां न परिश्रान्तां दद्याद्गां ब्राह्मणाय वै ॥१३-६५-५१॥
na kṛśāṃ pāpavatsāṃ vā vandhyāṃ rogānvitāṃ tathā। na vyaṅgāṃ na pariśrāntāṃ dadyādgāṃ brāhmaṇāya vai॥13-65-51॥
[न (na) - not; कृशां (kṛśām) - emaciated (cow); पापवत्सां (pāpavatsām) - with a sinful calf; वा (vā) - or; वन्ध्यां (vandhyām) - barren (cow); रोगान्वितां (rogānvitām) - afflicted with disease; तथा (tathā) - likewise; न (na) - not; व्यङ्गां (vyaṅgām) - deformed (cow); न (na) - not; परिश्रान्तां (pariśrāntām) - exhausted (cow); दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; गां (gām) - cow; ब्राह्मणाय (brāhmaṇāya) - to a Brāhmaṇa; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Not an emaciated, with a sinful calf or barren, afflicted with disease likewise; not deformed, not exhausted should one give a cow to a Brāhmaṇa indeed.)
One should not give to a Brāhmaṇa a cow that is emaciated, that has a sinful calf, that is barren, afflicted with disease, deformed, or exhausted. (13-65-51)
दशगोसहस्रदः सम्यक्षक्रेण सह मोदते। अक्षयाँल्लभते लोकान्नरः शतसहस्रदः ॥१३-६५-५२॥
daśagosahasradaḥ samyak-śakreṇa saha modate। akṣayāṇ labhate lokān naraḥ śatasahasradaḥ॥13-65-52॥
[दशगोसहस्रदः (daśa-go-sahasra-daḥ) - giver of ten thousand cows; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - with Indra; सह (saha) - together; मोदते (modate) - rejoices; अक्षयान् (akṣayān) - imperishable; लभते (labhate) - obtains; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; नरः (naraḥ) - man; शतसहस्रदः (śata-sahasra-daḥ) - giver of a hundred thousand (cows);]
(The giver of ten thousand cows, properly, together with Indra, rejoices; the man, giver of a hundred thousand (cows), obtains imperishable worlds.)
The donor of ten thousand cows rejoices in the company of Indra; the man who gives a hundred thousand cows attains imperishable worlds. (13-65-52)
इत्येतद्गोप्रदानं च तिलदानं च कीर्तितम्। तथा भूमिप्रदानं च शृणुष्वान्ने च भारत ॥१३-६५-५३॥
ity etad go-pradānaṃ ca tila-dānaṃ ca kīrtitam। tathā bhūmi-pradānaṃ ca śṛṇu ṣva-anne ca bhārata॥13-65-53॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; गोप्रदानं (go-pradānam) - gift of cows; च (ca) - and; तिलदानं (tila-dānam) - gift of sesame; च (ca) - and; कीर्तितम् (kīrtitam) - has been mentioned; तथा (tathā) - so; भूमिप्रदानं (bhūmi-pradānam) - gift of land; च (ca) - and; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; ष्व (ṣva) - now; अन्ने (anne) - about food; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Thus this gift of cows and gift of sesame has been mentioned. So also gift of land and now hear about food, and O Bhārata,)
Thus, the gift of cows and the gift of sesame have been described; likewise, the gift of land. Now, O Bhārata, hear also about food. (13-65-53)
अन्नदानं प्रधानं हि कौन्तेय परिचक्षते। अन्नस्य हि प्रदानेन रन्तिदेवो दिवं गतः ॥१३-६५-५४॥
annadānaṃ pradhānaṃ hi kaunteya paricakṣate। annasya hi pradānena rantidevo divaṃ gataḥ ॥13-65-54॥
[अन्नदानं (annadānam) - gift of food; प्रधानं (pradhānam) - chief; हि (hi) - indeed; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; परिचक्षते (paricakṣate) - they declare; अन्नस्य (annasya) - of food; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रदानेन (pradānena) - by giving; रन्तिदेवः (rantidevaḥ) - Rantideva; दिवं (divam) - to heaven; गतः (gataḥ) - went;]
(The gift of food (is) chief indeed, O Kaunteya, they declare. By giving food indeed, Rantideva went to heaven.)
O son of Kunti, they declare that the gift of food is indeed the foremost. Indeed, by giving food, Rantideva went to heaven. (13-65-54)
श्रान्ताय क्षुधितायान्नं यः प्रयच्छति भूमिप। स्वायम्भुवं महाभागं स पश्यति नराधिप ॥१३-६५-५५॥
śrāntāya kṣudhitàyāannaṃ yaḥ prayacchati bhūmipa। svāyambhuvaṃ mahābhāgaṃ sa paśyati narādhipa ॥13-65-55॥
[श्रान्ताय (śrāntāya) - to the weary; क्षुधिताय (kṣudhitàya) - to the hungry; अन्नं (annaṃ) - food; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives; भूमिप (bhūmipa) - O king; स्वायम्भुवं (svāyambhuvaṃ) - Son of Svayambhu (Manu); महाभागं (mahābhāgaṃ) - the greatly fortunate one; स (sa) - he; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men;]
(To the weary, to the hungry, food who gives, O king, Svayambhu's greatly fortunate (son), he sees, O lord of men.)
O king, whoever gives food to the weary and the hungry, he beholds the greatly fortunate Svayambhu Manu himself, O lord of men. (13-65-55)
न हिरण्यैर्न वासोभिर्नाश्वदानेन भारत। प्राप्नुवन्ति नराः श्रेयो यथेहान्नप्रदाः प्रभो ॥१३-६५-५६॥
na hiraṇyair na vāsobhir nāśvadānena bhārata। prāpnuvanti narāḥ śreyo yathehānnapradāḥ prabho ॥13-65-56॥
[न (na) - not; हिरण्यैः (hiraṇyaiḥ) - with gold; न (na) - not; वासोभिः (vāsobhiḥ) - with garments; न (na) - not; अश्वदानेन (aśvadānena) - by gift of horses; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; प्राप्नुवन्ति (prāpnuvanti) - attain; नराः (narāḥ) - men; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - highest good; यथा (yathā) - as; इह (iha) - here; अन्नप्रदाः (annapradāḥ) - givers of food; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Not by gold, not by garments, not by gift of horses, O Bhārata, do men attain the highest good, as here do the givers of food, O lord.)
O Bhārata, men do not attain the highest good through gold, nor through garments, nor through giving horses, as do the givers of food here, O lord. (13-65-56)
अन्नं वै परमं द्रव्यमन्नं श्रीश्च परा मता। अन्नात्प्राणः प्रभवति तेजो वीर्यं बलं तथा ॥१३-६५-५७॥
annaṁ vai paramaṁ dravyam annaṁ śrīś ca parā matā। annāt prāṇaḥ prabhavati tejo vīryaṁ balaṁ tathā॥13-65-57॥
[अन्नम् (annaṁ) - food; वै (vai) - indeed; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; द्रव्यम् (dravyam) - substance; अन्नम् (annaṁ) - food; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - prosperity; च (ca) - and; परा (parā) - supreme; मता (matā) - is considered; अन्नात् (annāt) - from food; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ) - life-breath; प्रभवति (prabhavati) - arises; तेजः (tejaḥ) - vitality; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - vigor; बलम् (balaṁ) - strength; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Food indeed (is) the supreme substance; food and prosperity (are) considered supreme. From food life-breath arises, vitality, vigor, strength likewise.)
Food is truly the supreme substance, and both food and prosperity are regarded as supreme. From food arise life, energy, vigor, and strength. (13-65-57)
सद्भ्यो ददाति यश्चान्नं सदैकाग्रमना नरः। न स दुर्गाण्यवाप्नोतीत्येवमाह पराशरः ॥१३-६५-५८॥
sadbhyo dadāti yaścānnaṁ sadaikāgramanā naraḥ। na sa durgāṇyavāpnōtītyevamāha parāśaraḥ॥13-65-58॥
[सद्भ्यः (sadbhyaḥ) - to the good; to virtuous people; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्नम् (annam) - food; सदा (sadā) - always; एकाग्रमना (ekāgramanā) - with concentrated mind; नरः (naraḥ) - man; person; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; दुर्गाणि (durgāṇi) - difficulties; obstacles; अवाप्नोति (avāpnōti) - attains; encounters; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - so; in this manner; आह (āha) - said; पराशरः (parāśaraḥ) - Parāśara;]
(To the good gives who and food always with concentrated mind man; not he difficulties attains thus so said Parāśara.)
A man who always gives food to the virtuous with a concentrated mind does not encounter difficulties—thus said Parāśara. (13-65-58)
अर्चयित्वा यथान्यायं देवेभ्योऽन्नं निवेदयेत्। यदन्नो हि नरो राजंस्तदन्नास्तस्य देवताः ॥१३-६५-५९॥
arcayitvā yathānyāyaṁ devebhyo'nnaṁ nivedayet। yadanno hi naro rājan tadannāstasya devatāḥ ॥13-65-59॥
[अर्चयित्वा (arcayitvā) - having worshipped; यथान्यायं (yathānyāyam) - according to rule; देवेभ्यः (devebhyaḥ) - to the gods; अन्नं (annaṁ) - food; निवेदयेत् (nivedayet) - should offer; यद् (yad) - which; अन्नः (annaḥ) - food; हि (hi) - indeed; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; राजंन् (rājan) - O king; तत् (tat) - that; अन्नाः (annāḥ) - foods; तस्य (tasya) - his; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities;]
(Having worshipped according to rule, one should offer food to the gods. Which food indeed a man, O king, that food of his (is received by) the deities.)
After performing worship as prescribed, one should offer food to the gods. O king, the food that a man offers, that very food is (accepted by) his deities. (13-65-59)
कौमुद्यां शुक्लपक्षे तु योऽन्नदानं करोत्युत। स सन्तरति दुर्गाणि प्रेत्य चानन्त्यमश्नुते ॥१३-६५-६०॥
kaumudyāṁ śuklapakṣe tu yo'nnadānaṁ karotyuta। sa santarati durgāṇi pretya cānantyamaśnute॥13-65-60॥
[कौमुद्यां (kaumudyām) - in the month of Kārtika (on the Kaumudī night); शुक्लपक्षे (śuklapakṣe) - in the bright fortnight; तु (tu) - but; indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; अन्नदानम् (annadānam) - gift of food; करोति (karoti) - does; makes; उत (uta) - and; moreover; सः (saḥ) - he; सन्तरति (santarati) - crosses over; passes beyond; दुर्गाणि (durgāṇi) - difficulties; obstacles; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having departed (after death); च (ca) - and; अनन्त्यम् (anantyam) - endlessness; eternity; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains; enjoys;]
(In the month of Kārtika, in the bright fortnight, but who gives food, does, moreover, he crosses over difficulties; having departed, and eternity he attains.)
But in the bright fortnight of Kārtika, whoever gives food—he crosses over all difficulties, and after death, attains eternity. (13-65-60)
अभुक्त्वातिथये चान्नं प्रयच्छेद्यः समाहितः। स वै ब्रह्मविदां लोकान्प्राप्नुयाद्भरतर्षभ ॥१३-६५-६१॥
abhuktvātithaye cānnaṃ prayacchedyaḥ samāhitaḥ। sa vai brahmavidāṃ lokān prāpnuyād bharatarṣabha॥13-65-61॥
[अभुक्त्वा (abhuktvā) - without having eaten; अतिथये (atithaye) - to a guest; च (ca) - and; अन्नं (annaṃ) - food; प्रयच्छेत् (prayacchet) - should give; यः (yaḥ) - he who; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - self-composed; सः (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; ब्रह्मविदां (brahmavidām) - of the knowers of Brahman; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - should attain; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(Without having eaten, to a guest and food should give, he who self-composed; he indeed of the knowers of Brahman worlds should attain, O bull among the Bharatas.)
He who, being self-composed, gives food to a guest before eating himself—he indeed attains the worlds of the knowers of Brahman, O bull among the Bharatas. (13-65-61)
सुकृच्छ्रामापदं प्राप्तश्चान्नदः पुरुषस्तरेत्। पापं तरति चैवेह दुष्कृतं चापकर्षति ॥१३-६५-६२॥
sukṛcchrām-āpadaṁ prāptaś cān-nadaḥ puruṣas tareta। pāpaṁ tarati caiva iha duṣkṛtaṁ ca apakarṣati॥13-65-62॥
[सुकृच्छ्रām् (sukṛcchram) - severe hardship; आपदं (āpadam) - calamity; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has attained; च (ca) - and; अन्नदः (annadaḥ) - one who gives food; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; तरेत् (taret) - should cross; पापं (pāpam) - sin; तरति (tarati) - crosses; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; दुष्कृतं (duṣkṛtam) - evil deed; च (ca) - and; अपकर्षति (apakarṣati) - draws away;]
(One who has attained severe hardship or calamity, and who gives food, that man should cross. He crosses sin and here draws away evil deed.)
A man who has fallen into great hardship or calamity, if he gives food, should be freed from it. He crosses over sin and in this world dispels evil deeds. (13-65-62)
इत्येतदन्नदानस्य तिलदानस्य चैव ह। भूमिदानस्य च फलं गोदानस्य च कीर्तितम् ॥१३-६५-६३॥
ity etad annadānasya tiladānasya ca eva ha। bhūmidānasya ca phalaṃ godānasya ca kīrtitam॥13-65-63॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etad) - this; अन्नदानस्य (annadānasya) - of gift of food; तिलदानस्य (tiladānasya) - of gift of sesame; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - verily; भूमिदानस्य (bhūmidānasya) - of gift of land; च (ca) - and; फलम् (phalam) - result; गोदानस्य (godānasya) - of gift of cow; च (ca) - and; कीर्तितम् (kīrtitam) - has been declared;]
(Thus, this (is) of gift of food, of gift of sesame, and indeed verily; and of gift of land, result, and of gift of cow, has been declared.)
Thus, the results of giving food, sesame, land, and cows have been declared. (13-65-63)
