श्रुतं दानफलं तात यत्त्वया परिकीर्तितम्। अन्नं तु ते विशेषेण प्रशस्तमिह भारत ॥१३-६६-१॥
śrutaṃ dāna-phalaṃ tāta yat tvayā parikīrtitam. annaṃ tu te viśeṣeṇa praśastam iha bhārata ॥13-66-1॥

(Heard the fruit of giving, O dear one, which by you was extolled. Food, however, to you, especially, praised here, O Bhārata (13-66-1))
O dear one, I have heard from you of the fruit of giving, but among them, food is especially praised here, O Bhārata (13-66-1)
पानीयदानं परमं कथं चेह महाफलम्। इत्येतच्छ्रोतुमिच्छामि विस्तरेण पितामह ॥१३-६६-२॥
pānīyadānaṃ paramaṃ kathaṃ ceha mahāphalam। ityetacchrotumicchāmi vistareṇa pitāmaha ॥13-66-2॥

(The gift of water (is) supreme, how and here (it has) great fruit; thus, this I wish to hear in detail, O grandsire.)
O grandsire, I wish to hear in detail how the gift of water is supreme and how it yields great fruit here. (13-66-2)

हन्त ते वर्तयिष्यामि यथावद्भरतर्षभ। गदतस्तन्ममाद्येह शृणु सत्यपराक्रम ॥ पानीयदानात्प्रभृति सर्वं वक्ष्यामि तेऽनघ ॥१३-६६-३॥
hanta te vartayiṣyāmi yathāvad bharatarṣabha। gadatas tan mama adya iha śṛṇu satyaparākrama ॥ pānīyadānāt prabhṛti sarvaṃ vakṣyāmi te anagha ॥13-66-3॥
[हन्त (hanta) - indeed; ते (te) - to you; वर्तयिष्यामि (vartayiṣyāmi) - I shall relate; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as it is; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; गदतः (gadatas) - as I speak; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - my; अद्य (adya) - today; इह (iha) - here; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; सत्यपराक्रम (satyaparākrama) - O truly brave; पानीयदानात् (pānīyadānāt) - from the giving of water; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - beginning; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall tell; ते (te) - to you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Indeed, to you I shall relate as it is, O bull among the Bharatas. As I speak, that which is mine, today here, listen, O truly brave. From the giving of water, beginning, all I shall tell to you, O sinless one. (13-66-3))

यदन्नं यच्च पानीयं सम्प्रदायाश्नुते नरः। न तस्मात्परमं दानं किञ्चिदस्तीति मे मतिः ॥१३-६६-४॥
yad annaṃ yac ca pānīyaṃ sampradāya aśnute naraḥ। na tasmāt paramam dānaṃ kiñcid asti iti me matiḥ॥13-66-4॥
[यत् (yat) - which; अन्नं (annaṃ) - food; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; पानीयं (pānīyaṃ) - water; सम्प्रदाय (sampradāya) - having given; अश्नुते (aśnute) - enjoys; consumes; नरः (naraḥ) - man; न (na) - not; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - than that; परमं (paramam) - higher; superior; दानं (dānaṃ) - gift; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अस्ति (asti) - is; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
(Which food and which water, having given, a man partakes; not than that a higher gift anything is, thus my opinion.)
In my opinion, there is no gift greater than giving food and water to one who partakes of it. (13-66-4)
अन्नात्प्राणभृतस्तात प्रवर्तन्ते हि सर्वशः। तस्मादन्नं परं लोके सर्वदानेषु कथ्यते ॥१३-६६-५॥
annāt prāṇabhṛtas tāta pravartante hi sarvaśaḥ। tasmād annaṃ paraṃ loke sarvadāneṣu kathyate ॥13-66-5॥
[अन्नात् (annāt) - from food; प्राणभृतः (prāṇabhṛtaḥ) - the living beings; तात (tāta) - dear one; प्रवर्तन्ते (pravartante) - proceed; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अन्नम् (annam) - food; परम् (param) - supreme; लोके (loke) - in the world; सर्वदानेषु (sarvadāneṣu) - among all gifts; कथ्यते (kathyate) - is said;]
(From food, the living beings, dear one, indeed proceed in every way; therefore, food is said to be the supreme among all gifts in the world.)
Dear one, all living beings indeed arise from food in every way; therefore, food is considered the highest among all gifts in the world. (13-66-5)
अन्नाद्बलं च तेजश्च प्राणिनां वर्धते सदा। अन्नदानमतस्तस्माच्छ्रेष्ठमाह प्रजापतिः ॥१३-६६-६॥
annādbalaṃ ca tejaśca prāṇināṃ vardhate sadā। annadānamatastasmācchreṣṭhamāha prajāpatiḥ ॥13-66-6॥
[अन्नात् (annāt) - from food; बलम् (balam) - strength; च (ca) - and; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; च (ca) - and; प्राणिनाम् (prāṇinām) - of beings; वर्धते (vardhate) - increases; सदा (sadā) - always; अन्नदानम् (annadānam) - food-giving; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - hence; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - the best; आह (āha) - has said; प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - Prajapati (the lord of creatures);]
(From food, strength and energy of beings always increase; food-giving, therefore, hence, the best, has said Prajapati.)
Prajapati has said that giving food is the best, for from food, strength and energy always increase among living beings. (13-66-6)
सावित्र्या ह्यपि कौन्तेय श्रुतं ते वचनं शुभम्। यतश्चैतद्यथा चैतद्देवसत्रे महामते ॥१३-६६-७॥
sāvitryā hyapi kaunteya śrutaṃ te vacanaṃ śubham। yataś caitad yathā caitad devasatre mahāmate ॥13-66-7॥
[सावित्र्या (sāvitryā) - by Sāvitrī;— हि (hi) - indeed;— अपि (api) - also;— कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti;— श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard;— ते (te) - by you;— वचनं (vacanam) - word;— शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious;— यतश्च (yataś ca) - since also;— एतत् (etat) - this;— यथा (yathā) - as;— च (ca) - and;— एतत् (etat) - this;— देवसत्रे (devasatre) - in the sacrifice to the gods;— महामते (mahāmate) - O great-minded one;—;]
(By Sāvitrī indeed also, O son of Kunti, the auspicious word was heard by you; since also this, as this, in the sacrifice to the gods, O great-minded one.)
O son of Kunti, you have also heard the auspicious words spoken by Sāvitrī; for this reason and in this manner, O greatly wise one, this took place in the sacrifice to the gods. (13-66-7)
अन्ने दत्ते नरेणेह प्राणा दत्ता भवन्त्युत। प्राणदानाद्धि परमं न दानमिह विद्यते ॥१३-६६-८॥
anne datte nareṇa iha prāṇā dattā bhavantyuta. prāṇa-dānāt hi paramam na dānam iha vidyate ॥13-66-8॥
[अन्ने (anne) - when food; (is) given; दत्ते (datte) - (is) given; नरेण (nareṇa) - by man; इह (iha) - here; प्राणा (prāṇāḥ) - lives; vital breaths; दत्ता (dattāḥ) - (are) given; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; उत (uta) - indeed; प्राणदानात् (prāṇa-dānāt) - from gift of life; हि (hi) - indeed; परमं (paramam) - supreme; न (na) - not; दानम् (dānam) - gift; इह (iha) - here; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; is found;]
(When food is given by a man here, lives indeed are given. From the gift of life, indeed, no supreme gift here is found.)
When a man gives food here, it is truly as if he gives life itself. Indeed, no gift here surpasses the gift of life. (13-66-8)
श्रुतं हि ते महाबाहो लोमशस्यापि तद्वचः। प्राणान्दत्त्वा कपोताय यत्प्राप्तं शिबिना पुरा ॥१३-६६-९॥
śrutaṃ hi te mahābāho lomaśasyāpi tadvacaḥ। prāṇān dattvā kapotāya yatprāptaṃ śibinā purā ॥13-66-9॥
[श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - by you; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; लोमशस्य (lomaśasya) - of Lomaśa; अपि (api) - also; तत् (tat) - that; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - the lives; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; कपोताय (kapotāya) - to the pigeon; यत् (yat) - which; प्राप्तं (prāptam) - was attained; शिबिना (śibinā) - by Śibi; पुरा (purā) - formerly;]
(That speech of Lomaśa also, indeed, O mighty-armed, has been heard by you: which was attained by Śibi formerly, having given the lives to the pigeon.)
O mighty-armed, you have indeed heard that account of Lomaśa also—how King Śibi, in ancient times, attained (renown) by giving his own life to the pigeon. (13-66-9)
तां गतिं लभते दत्त्वा द्विजस्यान्नं विशां पते। गतिं विशिष्टां गच्छन्ति प्राणदा इति नः श्रुतम् ॥१३-६६-१०॥
tāṃ gatiṃ labhate dattvā dvijasyānnaṃ viśāṃ pate। gatiṃ viśiṣṭāṃ gacchanti prāṇadā iti naḥ śrutam ॥13-66-10॥
[तां (tām) - that; (accusative singular feminine); गतिं (gatiṃ) - state; path; attainment; (accusative singular feminine); लभते (labhate) - obtains; attains; (third person singular, present, parasmaipada); दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; (absolutive/gerund of √dā); द्विजस्य (dvijasya) - of the twice-born; (genitive singular masculine); अन्नं (annaṃ) - food; (accusative singular neuter); विशां (viśām) - of men; of people; (genitive plural feminine); पते (pate) - O lord; (vocative singular masculine); गतिं (gatiṃ) - state; path; attainment; (accusative singular feminine); विशिष्टां (viśiṣṭāṃ) - special; distinguished; (accusative singular feminine); गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; attain; (third person plural, present); प्राणदा (prāṇadā) - givers of life; donors of sustenance; (nominative plural feminine); इति (iti) - thus; so; नः (naḥ) - by us; for us; to us; (genitive/dative/ablative plural first person); श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; (neuter singular past participle);]
(That state attains having given to the twice-born food, O lord of men. State special attain donors of life, thus by us heard. (13-66-10))
Having given food to a twice-born, O lord of men, one attains that state. The givers of life attain a special state—so we have heard. (13-66-10)
अन्नं चापि प्रभवति पानीयात्कुरुसत्तम। नीरजातेन हि विना न किञ्चित्सम्प्रवर्तते ॥१३-६६-११॥
annaṃ cāpi prabhavati pānīyāt kurusattama। nīrajātena hi vinā na kiñcit sampravartate ॥13-66-11॥
[अन्नम् (annam) - food; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रभवति (prabhavati) - arises; पानीयात् (pānīyāt) - from water; कुरुसत्तम (kurusattama) - O best of the Kurus; नीरजातेन (nīrajātena) - by what is produced from water; हि (hi) - indeed; विना (vinā) - without; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; सम्प्रवर्तते (sampravartate) - proceeds;]
(Food also indeed arises from water, O best of the Kurus. Without what is produced from water, not even anything proceeds.)
O best of the Kurus, food also arises from water. Indeed, without that which is produced from water, nothing proceeds at all. (13-66-11)
नीरजातश्च भगवान्सोमो ग्रहगणेश्वरः। अमृतं च सुधा चैव स्वाहा चैव वषट्तथा ॥१३-६६-१२॥
nīrajātaś ca bhagavān somo grahagaṇeśvaraḥ। amṛtaṃ ca sudhā caiva svāhā caiva vaṣaṭ tathā॥13-66-12॥
[नीरजातः (nīrajātaḥ) - born from water; च (ca) - and; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable (one); सोमः (somaḥ) - Soma; ग्रहगणेश्वरः (grahagaṇeśvaraḥ) - lord of the group of planets; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar (of immortality); च (ca) - and; सुधा (sudhā) - ambrosia; चैव (caiva) - and also; स्वाहा (svāhā) - the offering utterance 'svāhā'; चैव (caiva) - and also; वषट् (vaṣaṭ) - the sacrificial exclamation 'vaṣaṭ'; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(Born from water, and the venerable Soma, lord of the group of planets; nectar and ambrosia, and also 'Svāhā', and also 'Vaṣaṭ', so.)
Soma, the venerable one born from water, lord of the group of planets, is both nectar and ambrosia, as well as the exclamations 'Svāhā' and 'Vaṣaṭ'. (13-66-12)
अन्नौषध्यो महाराज वीरुधश्च जलोद्भवाः। यतः प्राणभृतां प्राणाः सम्भवन्ति विशां पते ॥१३-६६-१३॥
annauṣadhyo mahārāja vīrudhaś ca jalodbhavāḥ। yataḥ prāṇabhṛtāṃ prāṇāḥ sambhavanti viśāṃ pate ॥13-66-13॥
[अन्नौषध्यः (annauṣadhyaḥ) - food and medicinal plants; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; वीरुधः (vīrudhaḥ) - herbs; च (ca) - and; जलोड्भवाः (jalodbhavāḥ) - water-born; यतः (yataḥ) - from which; प्राणभृताम् (prāṇabhṛtām) - of living beings; प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - lives; सम्भवन्ति (sambhavanti) - arise; विशां (viśām) - of people; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(Food and medicinal plants, O great king, and herbs and water-born (plants), from which the lives of living beings arise, O lord of people.)
O great king, food, medicinal plants, herbs, and water-born plants are those from which the lives of living beings arise, O lord of the people. (13-66-13)
देवानाममृतं चान्नं नागानां च सुधा तथा। पितॄणां च स्वधा प्रोक्ता पशूनां चापि वीरुधः ॥१३-६६-१४॥
devānām amṛtaṃ ca annaṃ nāgānāṃ ca sudhā tathā. pitṝṇāṃ ca svadhā proktā paśūnāṃ cāpi vīrudhaḥ ॥13-66-14॥
[देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - ambrosia; (nectar; immortality-substance;) च (ca) - and; अन्नम् (annam) - food; नागानाम् (nāgānām) - of the nāgas; च (ca) - and; सुधा (sudhā) - elixir; तथा (tathā) - also; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - of the ancestors; च (ca) - and; स्वधा (svadhā) - oblation; प्रोक्ता (proktā) - is said; पशूनाम् (paśūnām) - of the animals; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वीरुधः (vīrudhaḥ) - herbs;]
(Of the gods, ambrosia and food; of the nāgas, also elixir; of the ancestors, and oblation is said; of the animals, also herbs.)
For the gods, ambrosia and food; for the nāgas, elixir as well; for the ancestors, oblation is declared; for animals, also herbs. (13-66-14)
अन्नमेव मनुष्याणां प्राणानाहुर्मनीषिणः। तच्च सर्वं नरव्याघ्र पानीयात्सम्प्रवर्तते ॥१३-६६-१५॥
annam eva manuṣyāṇāṃ prāṇān āhur manīṣiṇaḥ. tac ca sarvaṃ naravyāghra pānīyāt sampravartate ॥13-66-15॥
[अन्नम् (annam) - food; एव (eva) - indeed; मनुष्याणाम् (manuṣyāṇām) - of men; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; आहुः (āhuḥ) - say (they); मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; पानीयात् (pānīyāt) - from water; सम्प्रवर्तते (sampravartate) - arises;]
(Food indeed the lives of men say (they) the wise. That and all, O tiger among men, from water arises.)
The wise say that food alone is the life of men. And, O tiger among men, all that (food) arises from water. (13-66-15)
तस्मात्पानीयदानाद्वै न परं विद्यते क्वचित्। तच्च दद्यान्नरो नित्यं य इच्छेद्भूतिमात्मनः ॥१३-६६-१६॥
tasmātpānīyadānādvai na paraṁ vidyate kvacit। tacca dadyānnaro nityaṁ ya icchedbhūtimātmanaḥ ॥13-66-16॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; पानीयदानात् (pānīyadānāt) - from offering of water; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; परम् (param) - higher; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - one should give; नरः (naraḥ) - man; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; यः (yaḥ) - who; इच्छेत् (icchet) - might desire; भूतिम् (bhūtim) - prosperity; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself;]
(Therefore, from the offering of water indeed not higher exists anywhere. That and should give man always who might desire prosperity of himself.)
Therefore, of all offerings, none is greater anywhere than the gift of water. So a man should always give it, if he desires his own prosperity. (13-66-16)
धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं जलदानं विशां पते। शत्रूंश्चाप्यधि कौन्तेय सदा तिष्ठति तोयदः ॥१३-६६-१७॥
dhanyaṃ yaśasyam āyuṣyam jaladānaṃ viśāṃ pate | śatrūṃś cāpy adhi kaunteya sadā tiṣṭhati toyadaḥ ॥13-66-17॥
[धन्यम् (dhanyam) - fortunate; यशस्य (yaśasyam) - glorious; आयुष्यम् (āyuṣyam) - life-giving; जलदानम् (jaladānam) - giver of water; विशां (viśām) - of people; पते (pate) - O lord; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अधि (adhi) - over; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; सदा (sadā) - always; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - stands; तोयदः (toyadaḥ) - the cloud;]
(Fortunate, glorious, life-giving, giver of water, O lord of people, over enemies also, O son of Kunti, always stands the cloud.)
O son of Kunti, the cloud, which is fortunate, glorious, life-giving, the giver of water, always stands above even enemies, O lord of people. (13-66-17)
सर्वकामानवाप्नोति कीर्तिं चैवेह शाश्वतीम्। प्रेत्य चानन्त्यमाप्नोति पापेभ्यश्च प्रमुच्यते ॥१३-६६-१८॥
sarvakāmān avāpnoti kīrtiṃ caiva iha śāśvatīm। pretya ca anantyam āpnoti pāpebhyaś ca pramucyate ॥13-66-18॥
[सर्वकामान् (sarvakāmān) - all desires; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) - attains; कीर्तिम् (kīrtim) - fame; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; इह (iha) - here; शाश्वतीम् (śāśvatīm) - perpetual; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having departed (after death); च (ca) - and; अनन्त्यम् (anantyam) - the eternal; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; पापेभ्यः (pāpebhyaḥ) - from sins; च (ca) - and; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released;]
(All desires attains, fame and indeed here perpetual; after death and the eternal attains; from sins and is released.)
He attains all desires and gains indeed everlasting fame here; after death, he attains the eternal and is released from sins. (13-66-18)
तोयदो मनुजव्याघ्र स्वर्गं गत्वा महाद्युते। अक्षयान्समवाप्नोति लोकानित्यब्रवीन्मनुः ॥१३-६६-१९॥
toya-daḥ manuja-vyāghra svargaṃ gatvā mahādyute. akṣayān sam-avāpnoti lokān iti abravīn manuḥ ॥13-66-19॥
[तोयदः (toya-daḥ) - giver of water; (cloud or benefactor); मनुजव्याघ्र (manuja-vyāghra) - tiger among men; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant (one); अक्षयान् (akṣayān) - imperishable; समवाप्नोति (sam-avāpnoti) - fully attains; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीन्मनुः (abravīn manuḥ) - said Manu;]
(Giver of water, tiger among men, having gone to heaven, O greatly radiant one, imperishable worlds fully attains, thus said Manu.)
O tiger among men, the giver of water, having gone to heaven, attains imperishable worlds, O greatly radiant one—thus said Manu. (13-66-19)
