tilānāṃ kīdṛśaṃ dānam atha dīpasya caiva ha। annānāṃ vāsasāṃ caiva bhūya eva bravīhi me ॥13-67-1॥

Please tell me again, what kind of gift of sesame seeds, and also of lamps, as well as of food grains and clothes. (13-67-1)

अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। ब्राह्मणस्य च संवादं यमस्य च युधिष्ठिर ॥१३-६७-२॥
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। brāhmaṇasya ca saṃvādaṃ yamasya ca yudhiṣṭhira ॥13-67-2॥

मध्यदेशे महान्ग्रामो ब्राह्मणानां बभूव ह। गङ्गायमुनयोर्मध्ये यामुनस्य गिरेरधः ॥१३-६७-३॥
madhyadeśe mahān grāmo brāhmaṇānāṃ babhūva ha. gaṅgā-yamunayor madhye yāmunasya girer adhaḥ ॥13-67-3॥
[मध्यदेशे (madhyadeśe) - in the Madhyadeśa; महान् (mahān) - great; ग्रामः (grāmaḥ) - village; ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; बभूव (babhūva) - became; ह (ha) - indeed; गङ्गायमुनयोः (gaṅgā-yamunayor) - of Gaṅgā and Yamunā; मध्ये (madhye) - in the middle; यामुनस्य (yāmunasya) - of Yamuna; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the hill; अधः (adhaḥ) - below;]
(In the Madhyadeśa, a great village of the Brāhmaṇas indeed became. Of Gaṅgā and Yamunā, in the middle, below the hill of Yamunā.)
In the region of Madhyadeśa, there was indeed a great village of Brāhmaṇas, situated between the Gaṅgā and Yamunā rivers, below the hill of Yamunā. (13-67-3)
पर्णशालेति विख्यातो रमणीयो नराधिप। विद्वांसस्तत्र भूयिष्ठा ब्राह्मणाश्चावसंस्तदा ॥१३-६७-४॥
parṇaśāleti vikhyāto ramaṇīyo narādhipa। vidvāṃsastatra bhūyiṣṭhā brāhmaṇāścāvaṃsaṃstadā॥13-67-4॥
[पर्णशालेति (parṇaśāle iti) - parṇaśālā – leaf-hall; iti – thus; विख्यातः (vikhyātaḥ) - well-known; रमणीयः (ramaṇīyaḥ) - charming; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; विद्वांसः (vidvāṃsaḥ) - learned ones; तत्र (tatra) - there; भूयिष्ठाः (bhūyiṣṭhāḥ) - mostly; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; अवसंस् (avasaṃs) - resided; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(The leaf-hall, thus, was well-known, charming, O king. Learned ones, there, mostly, the brāhmaṇas and, resided then.)
O king, the place known as the Parṇaśālā was charming and well-known. There, mostly brāhmaṇas and other learned ones resided at that time. (13-67-4)
अथ प्राह यमः कञ्चित्पुरुषं कृष्णवाससम्। रक्ताक्षमूर्ध्वरोमाणं काकजङ्घाक्षिनासिकम् ॥१३-६७-५॥
atha prāha yamaḥ kañcit-puruṣaṁ kṛṣṇa-vāsasam। raktākṣa-mūrdhva-romāṇaṁ kākajaṅgha-akṣi-nāsikam ॥13-67-5॥
[अथ (atha) - then; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - a certain; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - man; कृष्णवाससम् (kṛṣṇa-vāsasam) - black-clad; रक्ताक्षम् (raktākṣam) - red-eyed; ऊर्ध्वरोमाणम् (mūrdhva-romāṇam) - with hair standing upwards; काकजङ्घ (kākajaṅgha) - with crow-like shanks; आक्षिनासिकम् (akṣi-nāsikam) - with eyes (and) nose;]
(Then Yama spoke to a certain man, black-clad, red-eyed, with hair standing upwards, with crow-like shanks, with eyes and nose.)
Then Yama spoke to a certain man who was clothed in black, had red eyes, hair standing on end, legs like those of a crow, and eyes and nose resembling those of a crow. (13-67-5)
गच्छ त्वं ब्राह्मणग्रामं ततो गत्वा तमानय। अगस्त्यं गोत्रतश्चापि नामतश्चापि शर्मिणम् ॥१३-६७-६॥
gaccha tvaṁ brāhmaṇagrāmaṁ tato gatvā tam ānaya। agastyaṁ gotrataś cāpi nāmataś cāpi śarmiṇam ॥13-67-6॥

(Go you the village of brāhmaṇas; from there having gone, him bring. Agastya by lineage and also by name and also Śarmiṇa.)
Go to the village of brāhmaṇas; after going there, bring him: Agastya by lineage and Śarmiṇa by name. (13-67-6)
शमे निविष्टं विद्वांसमध्यापकमनादृतम्। मा चान्यमानयेथास्त्वं सगोत्रं तस्य पार्श्वतः ॥१३-६७-७॥
śame niviṣṭaṃ vidvāṃsam adhyāpakam anādṛtam। mā cānyam ānayethās tvaṃ sagotraṃ tasya pārśvataḥ ॥13-67-7॥
[शमे (śame) - in composure; in calm; in tranquillity; निविष्टं (niviṣṭam) - sitting; established; settled; विद्वांसम् (vidvāṃsam) - a learned person; a scholar; अध्यापकम् (adhyāpakam) - a teacher; अनादृतम् (anādṛtam) - disregarded; not respected; मा (mā) - do not; च (ca) - and; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; someone else; आनयेथाः (ānayethāḥ) - may you bring; should you bring; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सगोत्रम् (sagotram) - with the same lineage; of the same family; तस्य (tasya) - his; of him; पार्श्वतः (pārśvataḥ) - beside; next to;]
(In composure sitting, a learned teacher not respected; and do not may you bring another with the same lineage beside him.)
Do not bring another teacher of the same lineage to sit beside a learned teacher who is settled in composure but not respected. (13-67-7)
स हि तादृग्गुणस्तेन तुल्योऽध्ययनजन्मना। अपत्येषु तथा वृत्ते समस्तेनैव धीमता ॥ तमानय यथोद्दिष्टं पूजा कार्या हि तस्य मे ॥१३-६७-८॥
sa hi tādṛg-guṇas tena tulyo'dhyayana-janmanā। apatyeṣu tathā vṛtte samastenaiva dhīmatā ॥ tam ānaya yathoddiṣṭaṃ pūjā kāryā hi tasya me ॥13-67-8॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; तादृग्गुणः (tādṛg-guṇaḥ) - having such qualities; तेन (tena) - by him; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; अध्ययन-जन्मना (adhyayana-janmanā) - by birth of study; अपत्येषु (apatyeṣu) - among children; तथा (tathā) - likewise; वृत्ते (vṛtte) - in conduct; समस्तेन एव (samastena eva) - by all (means) indeed; धीमता (dhīmatā) - by the wise; तम् (tam) - him; आनय (ānaya) - bring; यथोद्दिष्टम् (yathoddiṣṭam) - as pointed out; पूजा (pūjā) - worship; कार्या (kāryā) - should be done; हि (hi) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - for him; मे (me) - by me;]
(He indeed, having such qualities, by him equal by birth of study, among children likewise, in conduct, by all indeed by the wise. Bring him as pointed out; worship should indeed be done for him by me. (13-67-8))
For he, having such qualities, is equal by virtue of birth and study; likewise among children, and by all means in conduct according to the wise. Bring him as specified; worship must indeed be performed for him by me. (13-67-8)
स गत्वा प्रतिकूलं तच्चकार यमशासनम्। तमाक्रम्यानयामास प्रतिषिद्धो यमेन यः ॥१३-६७-९॥
sa gatvā pratikūlaṁ taccakāra yamaśāsanam। tamākramyānayāmāsa pratiṣiddho yamena yaḥ ॥13-67-9॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; प्रतिकूलं (pratikūlam) - contrary; तत् (tat) - that; चकार (cakāra) - did; यमशासनम् (yamaśāsanam) - Yama's command; तम् (tam) - him; आक्रम्य (ākramya) - having overcome; आनयामास (ānayāmāsa) - brought; प्रतिषिद्धः (pratiṣiddhaḥ) - forbidden; यमेन (yamena) - by Yama; यः (yaḥ) - who;]
(He having gone, contrary, that did, Yama's command. Him having overcome brought (he) forbidden by Yama, who. (13-67-9))
He went and did that which was contrary to Yama's command. Having overpowered him, he brought (him), though forbidden by Yama. (13-67-9)
तस्मै यमः समुत्थाय पूजां कृत्वा च वीर्यवान्। प्रोवाच नीयतामेष सोऽन्य आनीयतामिति ॥१३-६७-१०॥
tasmai yamaḥ samutthāya pūjāṃ kṛtvā ca vīryavān। provāca nīyatāmeṣa so'nya ānīyatāmiti ॥13-67-10॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; समुत्थाय (samutthāya) - having risen; पूजां (pūjāṃ) - honour; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; प्रोवाच (provāca) - he said; नीयताम् (nīyatām) - let him be led; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (one); सः (saḥ) - he; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; आनीयताम् (ānīyatām) - let another be brought; इति (iti) - thus;]
(To him Yama, having risen, having performed honour and powerful, he said, "Let this one be led out; let another be brought thus." (13-67-10))
To him, Yama—the powerful one—rose, performed honour, and said, "Let this one be taken away; let another be brought." (13-67-10)
एवमुक्ते तु वचने धर्मराजेन स द्विजः। उवाच धर्मराजानं निर्विण्णोऽध्ययनेन वै ॥ यो मे कालो भवेच्छेषस्तं वसेयमिहाच्युत ॥१३-६७-११॥
evam-ukte tu vacane dharmarājena sa dvijaḥ। uvāca dharmarājānam nirviṇṇaḥ adhyayanena vai ॥ yaḥ me kālaḥ bhavet śeṣaḥ tam vaseyam iha acyuta ॥13-67-11॥
[एवं-उक्ते (evaṃ-ukte) - thus having been spoken; तु (tu) - but; वचने (vacane) - in this speech; धर्मराजेन (dharmarājena) - by Dharmarāja; सः (saḥ) - he; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; धर्मराजानम् (dharmarājānam) - to Dharmarāja; निर्विण्णः (nirviṇṇaḥ) - disenchanted; अध्ययनेन (adhyayanena) - with study; वै (vai) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - which; मे (me) - my; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; शेषः (śeṣaḥ) - remaining; तम् (tam) - that; वसेयम् (vaseyam) - may I dwell; इह (iha) - here; अच्युत (acyuta) - O steadfast one;]
(Thus having been spoken but in this speech by Dharmarāja, he, the twice-born, spoke to Dharmarāja, disenchanted with study indeed. The time which to me may remain, that may I dwell here, O Acyuta.)
When thus addressed by Dharmarāja, that twice-born said to Dharmarāja—disenchanted with study, indeed—"O Acyuta, let me spend whatever time remains to me here." (13-67-11)

नाहं कालस्य विहितं प्राप्नोमीह कथञ्चन। यो हि धर्मं चरति वै तं तु जानामि केवलम् ॥१३-६७-१२॥
nāhaṃ kālasya vihitaṃ prāpnomīha kathaṃcana। yo hi dharmaṃ carati vai taṃ tu jānāmi kevalam॥13-67-12॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; विहितं (vihitam) - ordained; prescribed; प्राप्नोमि (prāpnomi) - (do) attain; reach; इह (iha) - here; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; at all; यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - dharma; righteousness; चरति (carati) - performs; practices; वै (vai) - certainly; तम् (tam) - him; तु (tu) - but; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; केवलम् (kevalam) - only; exclusively;]
(Not I, of time ordained, do attain here in any way; who indeed dharma practices certainly, him but I know only.)
I do not in any way attain what is ordained by time here; but I know only the one who indeed practices dharma. (13-67-12)
गच्छ विप्र त्वमद्यैव आलयं स्वं महाद्युते। ब्रूहि वा त्वं यथा स्वैरं करवाणि किमित्युत ॥१३-६७-१३॥
gaccha vipra tvam adyaiva ālayaṃ svaṃ mahādyute। brūhi vā tvam yathā svairaṃ karavāṇi kim ity uta ॥13-67-13॥
[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अद्यैव (adyaiva) - today itself; आलयं (ālayaṃ) - home; स्वं (svaṃ) - your; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly luminous one; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; वा (vā) - or; त्वम् (tvam) - you; यथा (yathā) - how; स्वैरम् (svairam) - freely; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - I shall do; किम् (kim) - what; इति (iti) - thus; उत (uta) - or;]
(Go, brāhmaṇa, you today itself to your home, O greatly luminous one. Or tell, you, how freely I shall do what thus or.)
O brāhmaṇa, go at once today to your own home, O greatly radiant one. Or else, tell me: what shall I do as you wish? (13-67-13)

yattatra kṛtvā sumahatpuṇyaṃ syāttadbravīhi me। sarvasya hi pramāṇaṃ tvaṃ trailokyasyāpi sattama ॥13-67-14॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तत्र (tatra) - there; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; पुण्यं (puṇyaṃ) - merit; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रमाणं (pramāṇaṃ) - authority; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; त्रैलोक्यस्य (trailokyasya) - of the three worlds; अपि (api) - also; सत्तम (sattama) - best; . (Which there having done very great merit may be, that tell to me. Of all indeed you authority, of the three worlds also, best.)
Tell me that act there by which very great merit may arise. For you are the authority for all, O best among the three worlds. (13-67-14)

शृणु तत्त्वेन विप्रर्षे प्रदानविधिमुत्तमम्। तिलाः परमकं दानं पुण्यं चैवेह शाश्वतम् ॥१३-६७-१५॥
śṛṇu tattvena vipraṛṣe pradānavidhim uttamam। tilāḥ paramakaṃ dānaṃ puṇyaṃ caiva iha śāśvatam॥13-67-15॥
[शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - in truth; by the principle; विप्रर्षे (vipraṛṣe) - O sage among Brāhmaṇas; प्रदानविधिम् (pradānavidhim) - the procedure of giving; method of charity; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; best; तिलाः (tilāḥ) - sesame seeds; परमकम् (paramakam) - supremely excellent; दानम् (dānam) - gift; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - merit; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; इह (iha) - here; in this world; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal;]
(Hear in truth, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, the supreme procedure of giving. Sesame seeds (are) the supremely excellent gift, (bringing) merit indeed here (which is) eternal.)
Hear, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, the supreme method of charity. The gift of sesame seeds is the highest gift, and its merit here is indeed eternal. (13-67-15)
तिलाश्च सम्प्रदातव्या यथाशक्ति द्विजर्षभ। नित्यदानात्सर्वकामांस्तिला निर्वर्तयन्त्युत ॥१३-६७-१६॥
tilāś ca sampradātavyā yathāśakti dvijarṣabha। nityadānāt sarvakāmāṃs tilā nirvartayanty uta॥13-67-16॥
[तिलाः (tilāḥ) - sesame seeds; च (ca) - and; सम्प्रदातव्या (sampradātavyāḥ) - should be given; यथा-शक्ति (yathā-śakti) - according to one's capability; द्विज-ऋषभ (dvija-ṛṣabha) - O best of twice-born; नित्य-दानात् (nitya-dānāt) - from regular giving; सर्व-कामान् (sarva-kāmān) - all desires; तिलाः (tilāḥ) - sesame seeds; निर्वर्तयन्ति (nirvartayanti) - fulfill; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Sesame seeds and should be given according to one's capability, O best of twice-born. From regular giving, all desires sesame seeds fulfill indeed. (13-67-16))
O best of the twice-born, sesame seeds should also be given according to one's ability. By regularly giving them, sesame seeds indeed fulfill all desires. (13-67-16)
तिलाञ्श्राद्धे प्रशंसन्ति दानमेतद्ध्यनुत्तमम्। तान्प्रयच्छस्व विप्रेभ्यो विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥१३-६७-१७॥
tilāñśrāddhe praśaṃsanti dānam etad dhy anuttamam. tān prayacchasva viprebhyo vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ॥13-67-17॥
[तिलाञ्श्राद्धे (tilāñśrāddhe) - in the sesame śrāddha; प्रशंसन्ति (praśaṃsanti) - they praise; दानम् (dānam) - gift; एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; तान् (tān) - them; प्रयच्छस्व (prayacchasva) - give; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - to Brāhmaṇas; विधिदृष्टेन (vidhidṛṣṭena) - prescribed by rule; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - with act;]
(In the sesame śrāddha, they praise this gift indeed as unsurpassed. Give them to Brāhmaṇas with the act prescribed by rule.)
The gift during the sesame śrāddha is indeed praised as the highest. Therefore, give these (sesame seeds) to Brāhmaṇas, following the prescribed procedure. (13-67-17)
तिला भक्षयितव्याश्च सदा त्वालभनं च तैः। कार्यं सततमिच्छद्भिः श्रेयः सर्वात्मना गृहे ॥१३-६७-१८॥
tilā bhakṣayitavyāś ca sadā tv ālabhanaṃ ca taiḥ। kāryaṃ satatam icchadbhiḥ śreyaḥ sarvātmanā gṛhe ॥13-67-18॥
[तिला (tilā) - sesame seeds; भक्षयितव्याः (bhakṣayitavyāḥ) - must be eaten; च (ca) - and; सदा (sadā) - always; त्वालभनं (tvālabhanaṃ) - your food; च (ca) - and; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - to be done; सततम् (satatam) - constantly; इच्छद्भिः (icchadbhiḥ) - by those desiring; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the highest good; सर्वात्मना (sarvātmanā) - with all one’s being; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house;]
(Sesame seeds must be eaten, and your food also, by them; to be done constantly by those desiring the highest good, with all one’s being, in the house.)
Sesame seeds must always be eaten, and your food also, by those who wish for the greatest good; this should always be done with full devotion at home. (13-67-18)
तथापः सर्वदा देयाः पेयाश्चैव न संशयः। पुष्करिण्यस्तडागानि कूपांश्चैवात्र खानयेत् ॥१३-६७-१९॥

[तथा (tathā) - thus; अपः (apaḥ) - water; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always; देयाः (deyāḥ) - should be given; पेयाः (peyāḥ) - should be drunk; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; पुष्करिण्यः (puṣkariṇyaḥ) - ponds; तडागानि (taḍāgāni) - lakes; कूपान् (kūpān) - wells; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; खानयेत् (khānayet) - one should dig;]
(Thus water always should be given, and (it) should be drunk indeed, there is not doubt. Ponds, lakes, (and) wells indeed here one should dig.)

एतत्सुदुर्लभतरमिह लोके द्विजोत्तम। आपो नित्यं प्रदेयास्ते पुण्यं ह्येतदनुत्तमम् ॥१३-६७-२०॥

प्रपाश्च कार्याः पानार्थं नित्यं ते द्विजसत्तम। भुक्तेऽप्यथ प्रदेयं ते पानीयं वै विशेषतः ॥१३-६७-२१॥

(Drinking places and should be made for drinking always by you, O best of the twice-born. When (someone) has eaten, even then water should be given by you, indeed especially.)

इत्युक्ते स तदा तेन यमदूतेन वै गृहान्। नीतश्चकार च तथा सर्वं तद्यमशासनम् ॥१३-६७-२२॥

[इति-उक्ते (iti-ukte) - having thus been spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; तेन (tena) - by him; यमदूतेन (yamadūtena) - by the messenger of Yama; वै (vai) - indeed; गृहान् (gṛhān) - the houses; नीतः (nītaḥ) - was led; च (ca) - and; अकार (cakāra) - he did; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - thus; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; तत्-यम-शासनम् (tat-yama-śāsanam) - that command of Yama;]
(Having thus been spoken, he then by the messenger of Yama indeed was led to the houses and did thus all that command of Yama.)
When thus addressed, he was then indeed led to the houses by that messenger of Yama and performed all of Yama's commands accordingly. (13-67-22)
नीत्वा तं यमदूतोऽपि गृहीत्वा शर्मिणं तदा। ययौ स धर्मराजाय न्यवेदयत चापि तम् ॥१३-६७-२३॥
nītvā taṁ yamadūto'pi gṛhītvā śarmiṇaṁ tadā। yayau sa dharmarājāya nyavedayata cāpi tam ॥13-67-23॥
[नीत्वा (nītvā) - having led; तं (taṁ) - him; यमदूतः (yamadūtaḥ) - the messenger of Yama; अपि (api) - also; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having seized; शर्मिणं (śarmiṇam) - Śarmiṇa (the person named Śarmiṇ); तदा (tadā) - then; ययौ (yayau) - departed; सः (saḥ) - he; धर्मराजाय (dharmarājāya) - to Dharmarāja (King of Dharma, Yama); न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - reported; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तम् (tam) - him;]
(Having led him, the messenger of Yama also having seized Śarmiṇa then, he departed to Dharmarāja and also reported him.)
Having carried him away, the messenger of Yama, having seized Śarmiṇa at that time, went to Dharmarāja and also reported him. (13-67-23)
तं धर्मराजो धर्मज्ञं पूजयित्वा प्रतापवान्। कृत्वा च संविदं तेन विससर्ज यथागतम् ॥१३-६७-२४॥
taṃ dharmarājo dharmajñaṃ pūjayitvā pratāpavān। kṛtvā ca saṃvidaṃ tena visasarja yathāgatam ॥13-67-24॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the king of dharma; धर्मज्ञं (dharmajñam) - knower of dharma; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having honored; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - glorious; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; च (ca) - and; संविदं (saṃvidam) - agreement; तेन (tena) - with him; विससर्ज (visasarja) - dismissed; यथागतम् (yathāgatam) - as he had come;]
(Him the king of dharma, knower of dharma, having honored, glorious, having made and agreement with him, dismissed as he had come.)

तथा प्रशंसते दीपान्यमः पितृहितेप्सया। तस्माद्दीपप्रदो नित्यं सन्तारयति वै पितॄन् ॥१३-६७-२६॥
tathā praśaṁsate dīpān yamāḥ pitṛ-hitepsayā। tasmād dīpa-prado nityaṁ santārayati vai pitṝn ॥13-67-26॥

दातव्याः सततं दीपास्तस्माद्भरतसत्तम। देवानां च पितॄणां च चक्षुष्यास्ते मताः प्रभो ॥१३-६७-२७॥
dātavyāḥ satataṃ dīpās tasmād bharatasattama। devānāṃ ca pitṝṇāṃ ca cakṣuṣyās te matāḥ prabho ॥13-67-27॥
[दातव्याः (dātavyāḥ) - to be given; सततं (satataṃ) - constantly; दीपाः (dīpāḥ) - lamps; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; च (ca) - and; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - of the ancestors; च (ca) - and; चक्षुष्याः (cakṣuṣyāḥ) - visible (to the eye); ते (te) - these; मताः (matāḥ) - are regarded as; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Lamps are to be given constantly; therefore, O best of the Bharatas, these are regarded as visible (pleasing) to the eyes of the gods and the ancestors, O lord.)

रत्नदानं च सुमहत्पुण्यमुक्तं जनाधिप। तानि विक्रीय यजते ब्राह्मणो ह्यभयङ्करः ॥१३-६७-२८॥
ratnadānaṃ ca sumahatpuṇyam uktaṃ janādhipa। tāni vikrīya yajate brāhmaṇo hy abhayaṅkaraḥ ॥13-67-28॥
[रत्नदानं (ratnadānam) - gift of jewels; च (ca) - and; सुमहत्पुण्यम् (sumahatpuṇyam) - very great merit; उक्तं (uktam) - is said; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O lord of people; तानि (tāni) - those; विक्रीय (vikrīya) - having sold; यजते (yajate) - performs sacrifice; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; हि (hi) - indeed; अभयङ्करः (abhayaṅkaraḥ) - remover of fear;]
(Gift of jewels and very great merit is said, O lord of people. Those (jewels), having sold, the Brāhmaṇa indeed performs sacrifice, (he is a) remover of fear.)

यद्वै ददाति विप्रेभ्यो ब्राह्मणः प्रतिगृह्य वै। उभयोः स्यात्तदक्षय्यं दातुरादातुरेव च ॥१३-६७-२९॥
yad vai dadāti viprebhyo brāhmaṇaḥ pratigṛhya vai। ubhayoḥ syāt tad akṣayyaṃ dātur ādātur eva ca॥13-67-29॥
[यत् (yat) - which; वै (vai) - indeed; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - to priests; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having received; वै (vai) - indeed; उभयोः (ubhayoḥ) - of both; स्यात् (syāt) - exists; तत् (tat) - that; अक्षय्यम् (akṣayyaṃ) - imperishable; दातुः (dātur) - of the giver; आदातुर् (ādātur) - of the receiver; एव (eva) - only; च (ca) - and;]
(Which indeed gives to priests a Brāhmaṇa, having received indeed; of both exists that imperishable, of the giver and only of the receiver.)
Whatever a Brāhmaṇa gives to priests, having duly received, that becomes imperishable for both — for the giver and for the receiver alike. (13-67-29)
यो ददाति स्थितः स्थित्यां तादृशाय प्रतिग्रहम्। उभयोरक्षयं धर्मं तं मनुः प्राह धर्मवित् ॥१३-६७-३०॥
yo dadāti sthitaḥ sthityāṃ tādṛśāya pratigraham| ubhayorakṣayaṃ dharmaṃ taṃ manuḥ prāha dharmavit॥13-67-30॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - situated; स्थित्यां (sthityām) - in livelihood; तादृशाय (tādṛśāya) - to one of such kind; प्रतिग्रहम् (pratigraham) - acceptance; उभयोः (ubhayoḥ) - of both; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - righteous act; तम् (tam) - that; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; प्राह (prāha) - said; धर्मवित् (dharmavit) - knower of dharma;]
(Who gives, situated, in livelihood, to one of such kind, acceptance—of both, imperishable, righteous act, that, Manu, said, knower of dharma.)
Manu, the knower of dharma, said that the act in which one situated in his livelihood gives and another of the same kind accepts is a righteous act imperishable for both. (13-67-30)
वाससां तु प्रदानेन स्वदारनिरतो नरः। सुवस्त्रश्च सुवेषश्च भवतीत्यनुशुश्रुम ॥१३-६७-३१॥
vāsasāṃ tu pradānena svadāra-nirato naraḥ। suvastraś ca suveṣaś ca bhavatīty anuśuśruma ॥13-67-31॥
[वाससां (vāsasāṃ) - of garments; तु (tu) - but; प्रदानेन (pradānena) - by the giving; स्वदारनिरतः (svadāra-nirataḥ) - devoted to his own wife; नरः (naraḥ) - man; सुवस्त्रः (suvastraḥ) - well clothed; च (ca) - and; सुवेषः (suveṣaḥ) - well adorned; च (ca) - and; भवती (bhavati) - becomes; इति (iti) - thus; अनुशुश्रुम (anuśuśruma) - we have heard;]
(But by the giving of garments, a man devoted to his own wife becomes well clothed and well adorned—thus we have heard.)

गावः सुवर्णं च तथा तिलाश्चैवानुवर्णिताः। बहुशः पुरुषव्याघ्र वेदप्रामाण्यदर्शनात् ॥१३-६७-३२॥
gāvaḥ suvarṇaṃ ca tathā tilāścaivānvarṇitāḥ। bahuśaḥ puruṣavyāghra vedaprāmāṇyadarśanāt॥13-67-32॥
[गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; सुवर्णं (suvarṇam) - gold; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; तिलाः (tilāḥ) - sesame seeds; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अनुवर्णिताः (anuvarṇitāḥ) - have been repeatedly mentioned; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - frequently; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - O tiger among men; वेदप्रामाण्यदर्शनात् (vedaprāmāṇyadarśanāt) - from the witnessing of the authority of the Veda;]
(Cows, gold, and also sesame seeds, and indeed have been repeatedly mentioned; frequently, O tiger among men, from the witnessing of the authority of the Veda.)

(Marriages and indeed should be performed, sons should be produced and; acquisition of son indeed, O Kauravya, than all acquisitions is superior.)
