Yudhishthira said.
उक्तं वै गोप्रदानं ते नाचिकेतमृषिं प्रति। माहात्म्यमपि चैवोक्तमुद्देशेन गवां प्रभो ॥१३-७१-१॥
uktaṃ vai gopradānaṃ te nāciketaṛṣiṃ prati। māhātmyam api caiva uktam uddeśena gavāṃ prabho ॥13-71-1॥
[उक्तं (uktaṃ) - said; वै (vai) - indeed; गोप्रदानं (gopradānaṃ) - the gifting of cows; ते (te) - to you; नाचिकेतमृषिं (nāciketaṛṣiṃ) - (unto) the sage Naciketa; प्रति (prati) - with respect to; माहात्म्यम् (māhātmyam) - greatness; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उक्तम् (uktam) - said; उद्देशेन (uddeśena) - for the sake (or by way) of indication; गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; प्रभो (prabho) - O master;]
(Indeed, to you, the gifting of cows was said with respect to the sage Naciketa. Also the greatness of cows, O master, indeed was said by way of indication.)
The instructions about the gifting of cows were indeed explained to you, regarding the sage Naciketa. Also, O master, the greatness of cows was stated briefly. (13-71-1)
नृगेण च यथा दुःखमनुभूतं महात्मना। एकापराधादज्ञानात्पितामह महामते ॥१३-७१-२॥
nṛgeṇa ca yathā duḥkham-anubhūtaṃ mahātmanā। ekāparādhād-ajñānāt-pitāmaha mahāmate ॥13-71-2॥
[नृगेण (nṛgeṇa) - by Nṛga;, च (ca) - and;, यथा (yathā) - as;, दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering;, अनुभूतम् (anubhūtaṃ) - experienced;, महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one;, एक (eka) - one;, अपराधात् (aparādhāt) - from transgression;, अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - from ignorance;, पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;, महामते (mahāmate) - O greatly wise (one);]
(By Nṛga and as suffering experienced by the great-souled one, from one transgression, from ignorance, O grandsire, O greatly wise one.)
O grandsire, O greatly wise one, as suffering was experienced by the great-souled Nṛga from a single transgression due to ignorance. (13-71-2)
द्वारवत्यां यथा चासौ निविशन्त्यां समुद्धृतः। मोक्षहेतुरभूत्कृष्णस्तदप्यवधृतं मया ॥१३-७१-३॥
dvāravatyāṃ yathā cāsau niviśantyāṃ samuddhṛtaḥ। mokṣaheturabhūt kṛṣṇas tad apy avadhṛtaṃ mayā॥13-71-3॥
[द्वारवत्याम् (dvāravatyām) - in Dvāravatī; (Locative singular of the place-name Dvāravatī; the city) ; यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner that; च (ca) - and; असौ (asau) - he; that (distant pronoun); निविशन्त्याम् (niviśantyām) - when entering; (locative singular feminine of present participle of 'ni-viś' - to enter); समुद्धृतः (samuddhṛtaḥ) - raised up; rescued; मोक्ष-हेतुः (mokṣa-hetuḥ) - cause of liberation; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; तत् (tat) - that; अपि (api) - also; अवधृतम् (avadhṛtam) - was considered; was understood; मया (mayā) - by me; (instrumental singular first person pronoun);]
(In Dvāravatī, just as when he was about to enter, being rescued, the cause of liberation became Kṛṣṇa; that also was understood by me.)
When he was being rescued in Dvāravatī, it was Kṛṣṇa who became the cause of liberation; I also considered that. (13-71-3)
किं त्वस्ति मम संदेहो गवां लोकं प्रति प्रभो। तत्त्वतः श्रोतुमिच्छामि गोदा यत्र विशन्त्युत ॥१३-७१-४॥
kiṁ tv asti mama saṁdeho gavāṁ lokaṁ prati prabho। tattvataḥ śrotum icchāmi godā yatra viśanti uta ॥13-71-4॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; तु (tu) - but; अस्ति (asti) - is; मम (mama) - my; सन्देहः (saṁdehaḥ) - doubt; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; लोकम् (lokam) - world; प्रति (prati) - regarding; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; गौदाः (godāḥ) - the givers of cows; यत्र (yatra) - where; विशन्ति (viśanti) - enter; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(What but is my doubt regarding the world of cows, O lord? Truly to hear I wish where the givers of cows indeed enter.)
But, O lord, I have a doubt regarding the world of cows; I wish to hear truly where the givers of cows actually go. (13-71-4)
भीष्म उवाच॥

अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। यथापृच्छत्पद्मयोनिमेतदेव शतक्रतुः ॥१३-७१-५॥
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṁ purātanam। yathā pṛcchat padmayonim etad eva śatakratuḥ ॥13-71-5॥
[अत्रापि (atrāpi) - here also; उदाहरन्ति (udāharanti) - they recite; they quote; इमम् (imam) - this; इतिहासं (itihāsaṁ) - historical account; legend; पुरातनम् (purātanam) - ancient; old; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked; पद्मयोनिम् (padmayonim) - Padmayoni; (one with a lotus as source; i.e., Brahmā); एतदेव (etad eva) - this very (thing); शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Śatakratu; (Indra);]
(Here also they recite this ancient historical account; just as Śatakratu (Indra) asked Padmayoni (Brahmā) this very (thing).)
Here too, they quote this ancient legend, as Śatakratu (Indra) once asked Padmayoni (Brahmā) this very matter. (13-71-5)

Indra said.
स्वर्लोकवासिनां लक्ष्मीमभिभूय स्वया त्विषा। गोलोकवासिनः पश्ये व्रजतः संशयोऽत्र मे ॥१३-७१-६॥
svarlokavāsināṃ lakṣmīm abhibhūya svayā tviṣā। golokavāsinaḥ paśye vrajataḥ saṃśayo'tra me ॥13-71-6॥
[स्वर्लोकवासिनां (svarloka-vāsinām) - of the inhabitants of the heavenly world; लक्ष्मीम् (lakṣmīm) - prosperity; अभिभूय (abhibhūya) - having surpassed; स्वया (svayā) - by one's own; त्विषा (tviṣā) - splendor; गोलोकवासिनः (goloka-vāsinaḥ) - of the inhabitants of Goloka; पश्ये (paśye) - I see; व्रजतः (vrajataḥ) - departing; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; अत्र (atra) - here; मे (me) - to me;]
(Having surpassed the prosperity of the inhabitants of the heavenly world by one's own splendor, of the inhabitants of Goloka, I see while departing; doubt here to me.)
I see, as I depart, that the inhabitants of Goloka have surpassed, by their own splendor, the prosperity of those who dwell in the heavenly world; thus, a doubt arises here in me. (13-71-6)
कीदृशा भगवँल्लोका गवां तद्ब्रूहि मेऽनघ। यानावसन्ति दातार एतदिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥१३-७१-७॥
kīdṛśā bhagavaṁllokā gavāṁ tadbrūhi me'nagha। yānāvasanti dātāra etadicchāmi veditum ॥13-71-7॥
[कीदृशा (kīdṛśā) - of what kind; भगवँल्लोका (bhagavaṁllokā) - O revered one, worlds; गवां (gavāṁ) - of cows; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; यान् (yān) - in which; आवसन्ति (āvasanti) - reside; दातार (dātāra) - the givers; एतत् (etat) - this; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; वेदितुम् (veditum) - to know;]
(Of what kind, O revered one, are the worlds of cows, that tell to me, O sinless one, in which reside the givers; this I desire to know.)
O sinless one, tell me what kinds of worlds exist for those who give cows—it is these in which the donors reside that I wish to know. (13-71-7)
कीदृशाः किम्फलाः कः स्वित्परमस्तत्र वै गुणः। कथं च पुरुषास्तत्र गच्छन्ति विगतज्वराः ॥१३-७१-८॥
kīdṛśāḥ kimphalāḥ kaḥ svit paramas tatra vai guṇaḥ। kathaṁ ca puruṣās tatra gacchanti vigatajvarāḥ॥13-71-8॥
[कीदृशाः (kīdṛśāḥ) - of what kind; as to their quality; किम्फलाः (kimphalāḥ) - what fruits; (what is) the fruit; कः (kaḥ) - which; who; स्वित् (svit) - indeed; truly; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; highest; तत्र (tatra) - there; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; गुणः (guṇaḥ) - quality; virtue; कथम् (katham) - how; च (ca) - and; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; persons; तत्र (tatra) - there; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; reach; विगतज्वराः (vigatajvarāḥ) - free from fever (affliction); without distress;]
(Of what kind? What fruits? What indeed is the highest quality there? How and men there go, free from fever?)
Of what kind are (they)? What are the fruits? What indeed is the highest quality there? How do men, free from affliction, go there? (13-71-8)
कियत्कालं प्रदानस्य दाता च फलमश्नुते। कथं बहुविधं दानं स्यादल्पमपि वा कथम् ॥१३-७१-९॥
kiyatkālaṃ pradānasya dātā ca phalamaśnute। kathaṃ bahuvidhaṃ dānaṃ syād alpam api vā katham ॥13-71-9॥
[कियत्कालं (kiyatkālam) - for how long; प्रदानस्य (pradānasya) - of the giving; दाता (dātā) - the giver; च (ca) - and; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अश्नुते (aśnute) - enjoys; कथम् (katham) - how; बहुविधं (bahuvidham) - of many kinds; दानं (dānam) - gift; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; अल्पम् (alpam) - small; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; कथम् (katham) - how;]
(For how long of the giving does the giver too enjoy the fruit? How may gift of many kinds be, or how even small?)
For how long does a giver enjoy the fruit of a gift? How can a gift become of many kinds, or even a small one—how? (13-71-9)
बह्वीनां कीदृशं दानमल्पानां वापि कीदृशम्। अदत्त्वा गोप्रदाः सन्ति केन वा तच्च शंस मे ॥१३-७१-१०॥
bahvīnāṃ kīdṛśaṃ dānam alpānāṃ vāpi kīdṛśam। adattvā gopradāḥ santi kena vā tacca śaṃsa me ॥13-71-10॥
[बह्वीनां (bahvīnāṃ) - of many; कीदृशं (kīdṛśaṃ) - of what kind; दानम् (dānam) - gift; अल्पानां (alpānāṃ) - of few; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; कीदृशम् (kīdṛśam) - of what kind; अदत्त्वा (adattvā) - without giving; गोप्रदाः (gopradāḥ) - givers of cows; सन्ति (santi) - are; केन (kena) - by what; वा (vā) - or; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; शंस (śaṃsa) - tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(Of many, of what kind is the gift? Of few also, of what kind? Without giving, givers of cows are; by what or that and tell to me.)
Of many people, what kind of gift is there? And of a few, what kind? How can there be givers of cows without actually giving? By what means does this happen? Tell me that. (13-71-10)
कथं च बहुदाता स्यादल्पदात्रा समः प्रभो। अल्पप्रदाता बहुदः कथं च स्यादिहेश्वर ॥१३-७१-११॥
kathaṁ ca bahudātā syādalpadātrā samaḥ prabho। alpapradātā bahudaḥ kathaṁ ca syādiheśvara ॥13-71-11॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; च (ca) - and; बहुदाता (bahudātā) - the giver of much; स्यात् (syāt) - may become; अल्पदात्रा (alpadātrā) - with the giver of little; समः (samaḥ) - equal; प्रभो (prabho) - O master; अल्पप्रदाता (alpapradātā) - the giver of little; बहुदः (bahudaḥ) - the giver of much; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; च (ca) - and; स्यात् (syāt) - may become; इह (iha) - in this world; ईश्वर (īśvara) - O Lord;]
(How and the giver of much may become equal with the giver of little, O master? The giver of little, the giver of much, how and may become, in this world, O Lord? (13-71-11))
O master, how can one who gives much ever be equal to one who gives little? O Lord, in this world, how can the giver of little become like the giver of much? (13-71-11)
कीदृशी दक्षिणा चैव गोप्रदाने विशिष्यते। एतत्तथ्येन भगवन्मम शंसितुमर्हसि ॥१३-७१-१२॥
kīdṛśī dakṣiṇā caiva gopradāne viśiṣyate। etattathyena bhagavan mama śaṃsitum arhasi॥13-71-12॥
[कीदृशी (kīdṛśī) - what kind; दक्षिणा (dakṣiṇā) - gift; fee; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गोप्रदाने (gopradāne) - in the giving of a cow; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is distinguished; excels; एतत् (etat) - this; तथ्येन (tathyena) - truly; with truth; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; मम (mama) - to me; शंसितुम् (śaṃsitum) - to declare; to tell; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; you are worthy;]
(What kind of gift and indeed excels in the giving of a cow? This, truly, O revered one, to me you ought to declare.)
O revered one, you ought to tell me truthfully what kind of gift excels in the giving of a cow. (13-71-12)
