Brahmā said.
योऽयं प्रश्नस्त्वया पृष्टो गोप्रदानाधिकारवान्। नास्य प्रष्टास्ति लोकेऽस्मिंस्त्वत्तोऽन्यो हि शतक्रतो ॥१३-७२-१॥
yo'yaṃ praśnas tvayā pṛṣṭo gopradānādhikāravān। nāsya praṣṭāsti loke'smiṃs tvatto'nyo hi śatakrato ॥13-72-1॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; प्रश्नः (praśnaḥ) - question; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - asked; गोप्रदानाधिकारवान् (gopradānādhikāravān) - having the authority over the bestowal of cows; न (na) - not; अस्य (asya) - for him; प्रष्टा (praṣṭā) - questioner; अस्ति (asti) - is; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - other than you; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; हि (hi) - surely; शतक्रतो (śatakrato) - O Indra;]
(Who this question by you asked, having the authority over cow-bestowal; not for him a questioner is in this world other than you, surely, O Śatakratu.)
O Śatakratu, this question about the authority for cow-bestowal, which has been asked by you—there is surely no one else in this world other than you to ask it. (13-72-1)
सन्ति नानाविधा लोका यांस्त्वं शक्र न पश्यसि। पश्यामि यानहं लोकानेकपत्न्यश्च याः स्त्रियः ॥१३-७२-२॥
santi nānāvidhā lokā yāṁs tvaṁ śakra na paśyasi। paśyāmi yān ahaṁ lokān ekapatnyaś ca yāḥ striyaḥ॥13-72-2॥
[सन्ति (santi) - are; exist; नानाविधा (nānāvidhā) - of various kinds; diverse; लोका (lokā) - worlds; realms; यान् (yān) - which; whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra (Indra); न (na) - not; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - you see; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; यान् (yān) - which; whom; अहम् (aham) - I; लोका (lokā) - worlds; realms; एकपत्न्यः (ekapatnyaḥ) - having one wife each; with one wife; च (ca) - and; याः (yāḥ) - who; which; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women;]
(Exist diverse worlds which you, O Śakra, do not see. I see which worlds, and women who are each with one wife.)
There are many kinds of worlds that you, O Śakra, do not see. I see those worlds, and the women who each have one husband. (13-72-2)
कर्मभिश्चापि सुशुभैः सुव्रता ऋषयस्तथा। सशरीरा हि तान्यान्ति ब्राह्मणाः शुभवृत्तयः ॥१३-७२-३॥
karmabhiś cāpi suśubhaiḥ suvratā ṛṣayas tathā। saśarīrā hi tān yānti brāhmaṇāḥ śubhavṛttayaḥ॥13-72-3॥
[कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - with actions; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सुशुभैः (suśubhaiḥ) - very auspicious (ones); सुव्रताः (suvratāḥ) - those of good vows; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; तथा (tathā) - thus; सशरीराः (saśarīrāḥ) - with bodies; हि (hi) - indeed; तान् (tān) - those; यान्ति (yānti) - go; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; शुभवृत्तयः (śubhavṛttayaḥ) - of auspicious conduct;]
(And with very auspicious actions also, those of good vows, sages thus, with bodies indeed, those go brāhmaṇas of auspicious conduct.)
Brāhmaṇas of auspicious conduct, performing very auspicious actions and possessing good vows, just like the sages, indeed go to those [states] even with their bodies. (13-72-3)
शरीरन्यासमोक्षेण मनसा निर्मलेन च। स्वप्नभूतांश्च ताँल्लोकान्पश्यन्तीहापि सुव्रताः ॥१३-७२-४॥
śarīranyāsamokṣeṇa manasā nirmalena ca। svapnabhūtāṃś ca tāṃl lokān paśyantīhāpi suvratāḥ ॥13-72-4॥
[शरीर-न्यास-मोक्षेण (śarīra-nyāsa-mokṣeṇa) - by the release of bodily withdrawal; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; निर्मलेन (nirmalena) - pure; untainted; च (ca) - and; स्वप्न-भूतान् (svapna-bhūtān) - become like a dream; च (ca) - and; तान् लोकान् (tān lokān) - those worlds; पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - they see; इह (iha) - here; अपि (api) - even; सुव्रताः (suvratāḥ) - those of good vows;]
(By the release of bodily withdrawal, and also with the pure mind, and (when) those worlds have become like a dream, even here, those of good vows see (them).)
By bodily withdrawal and with a pure mind, the virtuous, while still here, see those worlds as if in a dream. (13-72-4)
ते तु लोकाः सहस्राक्ष शृणु यादृग्गुणान्विताः। न तत्र क्रमते कालो न जरा न च पापकम् ॥ तथान्यन्नाशुभं किञ्चिन्न व्याधिस्तत्र न क्लमः ॥१३-७२-५॥
te tu lokāḥ sahasrākṣa śṛṇu yādṛg-guṇānvitāḥ। na tatra kramate kālaḥ na jarā na ca pāpakam॥ tathā anyat na aśubham kiñcit na vyādhiḥ tatra na klamaḥ॥13-72-5॥
[ते (te) - those; तु (tu) - indeed; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; सहस्राक्ष (sahasrākṣa) - O thousand-eyed; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; यादृग्गुणान्विताः (yādṛg-guṇānvitāḥ) - endowed with such qualities; न (na) - not; तत्र (tatra) - there; क्रमते (kramate) - penetrates; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; न (na) - not; जरा (jarā) - old age; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पापकम् (pāpakam) - evil; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; न (na) - not; अशुभम् (aśubham) - inauspicious; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; न (na) - not; व्याधिः (vyādhiḥ) - disease; तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; क्लमः (klamaḥ) - fatigue;]
(Those indeed worlds, O thousand-eyed, hear, endowed with such qualities. Not there penetrates time, not old age, nor evil. Likewise, other inauspicious anything not; disease there not; not fatigue.)
O thousand-eyed, listen: those worlds are endowed with such qualities. There, time does not enter; neither old age, nor evil is present. Likewise, there is nothing else inauspicious, no disease, and no fatigue. (13-72-5)
यद्यच्च गावो मनसा तस्मिन्वाञ्छन्ति वासव। तत्सर्वं प्रापयन्ति स्म मम प्रत्यक्षदर्शनात् ॥ कामगाः कामचारिण्यः कामात्कामांश्च भुञ्जते ॥१३-७२-६॥
yadyacca gāvo manasā tasminvāñchanti vāsava. tatsarvaṃ prāpayanti sma mama pratyakṣadarśanāt ॥ kāmagāḥ kāmacāriṇyaḥ kāmātkāmāṃśca bhuñjate ॥13-72-6॥
[यद्यच् (yadyac) - whatever; च (ca) - and; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that (him); वाञ्छन्ति (vāñchanti) - they desire; वासव (vāsava) - O Vāsava (Indra); तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; प्रापयन्ति (prāpayanti) - they cause to obtain; स्म (sma) - indeed (past tense particle); मम (mama) - to me; प्रत्यक्षदर्शनात् (pratyakṣadarśanāt) - from direct sight; कामगाः (kāmagāḥ) - freely roaming at will; कामचारिण्यः (kāmacāriṇyaḥ) - moving as they wish; कामात् (kāmāt) - from desire; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; च (ca) - and; भुञ्जते (bhuñjate) - they enjoy;]
(Whatever cows by mind in him desire, O Vāsava, that all they indeed caused to be obtained for me from direct sight. Freely-roaming at will, moving as they wish, from desire they enjoy desires.)
O Vāsava, whatever the cows desired in their mind of him, they all indeed made available for me by direct perception. These cows, moving and acting as they wish, enjoy all pleasures they wish for. (13-72-6)
वाप्यः सरांसि सरितो विविधानि वनानि च। गृहाणि पर्वताश्चैव यावद्द्रव्यं च किञ्चन ॥१३-७२-७॥
vāpyaḥ sarāṃsi sarito vividhāni vanāni ca। gṛhāṇi parvatāścaiva yāvad dravyaṃ ca kiñcana॥13-72-7॥
[वाप्यः (vāpyaḥ) - tanks; ponds; सरांसि (sarāṃsi) - lakes; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; च (ca) - and; गृहाणि (gṛhāṇi) - houses; पर्वताः (parvatāḥ) - mountains; चैव (ca eva) - and also; यावत् (yāvat) - as much as; द्रव्यं (dravyaṃ) - wealth; च (ca) - and; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - whatever;]
(Tanks, lakes, rivers, various forests, and houses, mountains also, as much as wealth and whatever.)
Tanks, lakes, rivers, various forests, houses, mountains, all kinds of wealth and possessions—whatever there is. (13-72-7)
मनोज्ञं सर्वभूतेभ्यः सर्वं तत्र प्रदृश्यते। ईदृशान्विद्धि ताँल्लोकान्नास्ति लोकस्ततोऽधिकः ॥१३-७२-८॥
manojñaṃ sarvabhūtebhyaḥ sarvaṃ tatra pradṛśyate. īdṛśān viddhi tāṃl lokān nāsti lokaḥ tato'dhikaḥ ॥13-72-8॥
[मनोज्ञं (manojñam) - pleasing to the mind; सर्वभूतेभ्यः (sarvabhūtebhyaḥ) - to all beings; सर्वं (sarvam) - all (everything); तत्र (tatra) - there; प्रदृश्यते (pradṛśyate) - is seen; ईदृशान् (īdṛśān) - such (as these); विद्धि (viddhi) - know; ताम् (tām) - those; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; लोकः (lokaḥ) - a world; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; अधिकः (adhikaḥ) - greater;]
(Pleasing to the mind for all beings, all there is seen. Such, know those worlds, there is not a world than that greater.)
Everything seen there is pleasing to the mind and beneficial to all beings. Know such worlds; there is no world greater than those. (13-72-8)
तत्र सर्वसहाः क्षान्ता वत्सला गुरुवर्तिनः। अहङ्कारैर्विरहिता यान्ति शक्र नरोत्तमाः ॥१३-७२-९॥
tatra sarvasahāḥ kṣāntā vatsalā guru-vartinaḥ | ahaṅkārair virahitā yānti śakra narottamāḥ ॥13-72-9॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; सर्वसहाः (sarvasahāḥ) - enduring all; tolerant; क्षान्ताः (kṣāntāḥ) - forbearing; forgiving; वत्सलाः (vatsalāḥ) - affectionate; loving; गुरुवर्तिनः (guru-vartinaḥ) - obedient to elders; following teachers; अहङ्कारैः (ahaṅkāraiḥ) - by egos; by pride; विरहिताः (virahitāḥ) - devoid of; free from; यान्ति (yānti) - they attain; they go; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; Indra; नरोत्तमाः (narottamāḥ) - the best of men; excellent men;]
(There, those who endure all, are forbearing, affectionate, obedient to elders, free from egos, attain, O Śakra, the best of men.)
There, O Śakra, those who are tolerant of all, forgiving, loving, obedient to elders, and free from pride become the best among men. (13-72-9)
यः सर्वमांसानि न भक्षयीत; पुमान्सदा यावदन्ताय युक्तः। मातापित्रोरर्चिता सत्ययुक्तः; शुश्रूषिता ब्राह्मणानामनिन्द्यः ॥१३-७२-१०॥
yaḥ sarvamāṁsāni na bhakṣayīta; pumān sadā yāvad-antāya yuktaḥ. mātā-pitror arcitā satya-yuktaḥ; śuśrūṣitā brāhmaṇānām anindyaḥ ॥13-72-10॥
[यः (yaḥ) - he who; सर्वमांसानि (sarvamāṁsāni) - all kinds of flesh; न (na) - not; भक्षयीत (bhakṣayīta) - should eat; पुमान् (pumān) - man; सदा (sadā) - always; यावदन्ताय (yāvad-antāya) - until the end; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged (in conduct); मातापित्रोः (mātā-pitror) - to mother and father; अर्चिता (arcitā) - who has honored; सत्ययुक्तः (satya-yuktaḥ) - associated with truth; शुश्रूषिता (śuśrūṣitā) - who has served; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of brāhmaṇas; अनिन्द्यः (anindyaḥ) - blameless;]
(He who all kinds of flesh not should eat; man always until the end engaged (in conduct). To mother and father honored, associated with truth; who has served of brāhmaṇas, blameless.)
He who does not eat any kind of flesh, who is always devoted until the end, who honors his mother and father, is devoted to truth, who serves the brāhmaṇas and is blameless, (13-72-10)
अक्रोधनो गोषु तथा द्विजेषु; धर्मे रतो गुरुशुश्रूषकश्च। यावज्जीवं सत्यवृत्ते रतश्च; दाने रतो यः क्षमी चापराधे ॥१३-७२-११॥
akrodhano goṣu tathā dvijeṣu; dharme rato guruśuśrūṣakaś ca. yāvajjīvaṃ satyavṛtte rataś ca; dāne rato yaḥ kṣamī cāparādhe ॥13-72-11॥
[अक्रोधनो (akrodhano) - not wrathful; गोषु (goṣu) - toward cows; तथा (tathā) - likewise; द्विजेषु (dvijeṣu) - toward twice-born; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; रतः (rataḥ) - delighted; गुरुशुश्रूषकः (guruśuśrūṣakaḥ) - one who serves elders; च (ca) - and; यावज्जीवं (yāvajjīvaṃ) - as long as [he] lives; सत्यवृत्ते (satyavṛtte) - in truthful conduct; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; च (ca) - and; दाने (dāne) - in giving; रतः (rataḥ) - delighted; यः (yaḥ) - who; क्षमी (kṣamī) - forgiving; च (ca) - and; पराधे (aparādhe) - in [the matter of] offence;]
(Not wrathful toward cows likewise toward twice-born; in dharma delighted, one who serves elders and; as long as [he] lives in truthful conduct engaged and; in giving delighted, who forgiving and in offence.)
He who is not wrathful toward cows or the twice-born, who delights in dharma, who serves his elders; who throughout his life remains engaged in truthfulness, is devoted to giving, is forgiving and in matters of offence, (13-72-11).
मृदुर्दान्तो देवपरायणश्च; सर्वातिथिश्चापि तथा दयावान्। ईदृग्गुणो मानवः सम्प्रयाति; लोकं गवां शाश्वतं चाव्ययं च ॥१३-७२-१२॥
mṛdurdānto devaparāyaṇaśca; sarvātithiścāpi tathā dayāvān। īdṛgguṇo mānavaḥ samprayāti; lokaṃ gavāṃ śāśvataṃ cāvyayaṃ ca ॥13-72-12॥
[मृदुः (mṛduḥ) - gentle; दान्तः (dāntaḥ) - self-restrained; देवपरायणः (devaparāyaṇaḥ) - devoted to the divine; च (ca) - and; सर्वातिथि (sarvātithi) - a host to all guests; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तथा (tathā) - so; दयावान् (dayāvān) - compassionate; ईदृग्गुणः (īdṛgguṇaḥ) - possessed of such qualities; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man; सम्प्रयाति (samprayāti) - proceeds; लोकम् (lokam) - to the world; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal; च (ca) - and; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - indestructible; च (ca) - and;]
(Gentle, self-restrained, devoted to the divine, and a host to all guests, so also compassionate—such a person, a man possessing these qualities, goes to the eternal and indestructible world of the cows.)
A gentle, self-restrained, god-devoted, universally hospitable, and compassionate person—such a person proceeds to the eternal and indestructible realm of the cows. (13-72-12)
न पारदारी पश्यति लोकमेनं; न वै गुरुघ्नो न मृषाप्रलापी। सदापवादी ब्राह्मणः शान्तवेदो; दोषैरन्यैर्यश्च युक्तो दुरात्मा ॥१३-७२-१३॥
na pāradārī paśyati lokam enaṃ; na vai gurughno na mṛṣāpralāpī. sadāpavādī brāhmaṇaḥ śāntavedo; doṣair anyair yaś ca yukto durātmā ॥13-72-13॥
[न (na) - not; पारदारी (pāradārī) - one who goes to another's wife; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees; लोकम् (lokam) - the people; एनम् (enaṃ) - this; न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; गुरुघ्नः (gurughnaḥ) - killer of teacher; न (na) - not; मृषाप्रलापी (mṛṣāpralāpī) - speaker of falsehood; सदा (sadā) - always; अपवादी (apavādī) - slanderer; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; शान्तवेदः (śāntavedo) - whose Vedas are quieted; दोषैः (doṣaiḥ) - with faults; अन्यैः (anyair) - other (ones); यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; दुरात्मा (durātmā) - wicked-souled;]
(Not an adulterer sees this people; not, indeed, a teacher-slayer, not a false speaker. Always a slanderer Brāhmaṇa whose Vedas are quieted; with other faults who and is endowed, wicked-souled (he is). (13-72-13))
He is not an adulterer who sees these people, nor a killer of the teacher, nor a liar. (But) always a Brāhmaṇa who is a slanderer whose Vedas are inactive, and who is endowed with other faults, is wicked-souled. (13-72-13)
न मित्रध्रुङ्नैकृतिकः कृतघ्नः; शठोऽनृजुर्धर्मविद्वेषकश्च। न ब्रह्महा मनसापि प्रपश्ये; द्गवां लोकं पुण्यकृतां निवासम् ॥१३-७२-१४॥
na mitradhruṅ naikr̥tikaḥ kr̥taghnaḥ; śaṭho'nr̥jur dharmavidveṣakaś ca. na brahmahā manasā'pi prapaśye; dugāṃ lokaṃ puṇyakr̥tāṃ nivāsam ॥13-72-14॥
[न (na) - not; मित्रध्रुङ् (mitradhruṅ) - betrayer of a friend; नैकृतिकः (naikr̥tikaḥ) - hypocrite; कृतघ्नः (kr̥taghnaḥ) - ingrate; शठः (śaṭhaḥ) - deceitful person; अनृजुः (anr̥juḥ) - dishonest; धर्मविद्वेषकः (dharmavidveṣakaḥ) - hater of righteousness; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; ब्रह्महा (brahmahā) - slayer of a Brāhmaṇa; मनसा अपि (manasā'pi) - even in mind; प्रपश्ये (prapaśye) - may see; द्गवां (dugavāṃ) - of the radiant ones (cows/the blessed); लोकं (lokaṃ) - world; पुण्यकृताम् (puṇyakr̥tām) - of the meritorious; निवासम् (nivāsam) - abode;]
(Not the betrayer of a friend, not the hypocrite, not the ingrate, not the deceitful, nor the dishonest, nor the hater of righteousness, nor the slayer of a Brāhmaṇa, even in mind, may see the world, the abode of the meritorious radiant ones.)
Neither the betrayer of a friend, nor the hypocrite, the ingrate, the deceitful, the dishonest, the hater of righteousness, nor a slayer of a Brāhmaṇa can ever, even in mind, behold the realm that is the abode of the virtuous and blessed. (13-72-14)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं नैपुणेन सुरेश्वर। गोप्रदानरतानां तु फलं शृणु शतक्रतो ॥१३-७२-१५॥
etat te sarvam ākhyātam naipuṇena sureśvara। gopradānaratānāṃ tu phalaṃ śṛṇu śatakrato ॥13-72-15॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; नैपुणेन (naipuṇena) - with skill; सुरेश्वर (sureśvara) - O lord of the gods; गो-प्रदान-रतानाम् (go-pradāna-ratānām) - of those engaged in cow-giving; तु (tu) - but; फलम् (phalam) - the result; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; शतक्रतो (śatakrato) - O hundred-powered (Indra);]
(This to you all has been told with skill, O lord of the gods; but the result of those engaged in cow-giving, listen, O hundred-powered (Indra). (13-72-15))
O lord of the gods, all this has been told to you with skill; but now, O Indra, listen to the result of those devoted to giving cows. (13-72-15)
दायाद्यलब्धैरर्थैर्यो गाः क्रीत्वा सम्प्रयच्छति। धर्मार्जितधनक्रीतान्स लोकानश्नुतेऽक्षयान् ॥१३-७२-१६॥
dāyādyalabdhair arthair yo gāḥ krītvā samprayacchati। dharmārjita-dhana-krītān sa lokān aśnute’kṣayān ॥13-72-16॥
[दायाद्यलब्धैः (dāyādyalabdhaiḥ) - by means obtained from inheritance; अर्थैः (arthaiḥ) - with wealth; यः (yaḥ) - who; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; क्रीत्वा (krītvā) - having purchased; सम्प्रयच्छति (samprayacchati) - gives; धर्मार्जितधनक्रीतान् (dharmārjita-dhana-krītān) - acquired by wealth obtained righteously; सः (saḥ) - he; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains; अक्षयान् (akṣayān) - imperishable;]
(Who, with wealth obtained from inheritance, having bought cows, gives (them), he attains the imperishable worlds acquired by wealth righteously obtained.)
He who, with inherited wealth, buys cows and gives them as gifts attains those imperishable worlds earned by righteously obtained wealth. (13-72-16)
यो वै द्यूते धनं जित्वा गाः क्रीत्वा सम्प्रयच्छति। स दिव्यमयुतं शक्र वर्षाणां फलमश्नुते ॥१३-७२-१७॥
yo vai dyūte dhanaṃ jitvā gāḥ krītvā samprayacchati। sa divyam ayutaṃ śakra varṣāṇāṃ phalam aśnute॥13-72-17॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; द्यूते (dyūte) - in gambling; धनं (dhanaṃ) - wealth; जित्वा (jitvā) - having won; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; क्रीत्वा (krītvā) - having bought; सम्प्रयच्छति (samprayacchati) - gives over; स (sa) - he; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अयुतं (ayutaṃ) - ten thousand; शक्र (śakra) - of Indra; वर्षाणां (varṣāṇāṃ) - of years; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अश्नुते (aśnute) - enjoys;]
(Who indeed in gambling having won wealth, having bought cows, gives over; he the divine ten thousand of Indra's years fruit enjoys.)
Whoever indeed, having gained wealth in gambling and then purchases cows and gives them away, he enjoys the fruit of ten thousand years in the heavenly realm of Indra. (13-72-17)
दायाद्या यस्य वै गावो न्यायपूर्वैरुपार्जिताः। प्रदत्तास्ताः प्रदातॄणां सम्भवन्त्यक्षया ध्रुवाः ॥१३-७२-१८॥
dāyādyā yasya vai gāvo nyāyapūrvair upārjitāḥ। pradattās tāḥ pradātṝṇāṃ sambhavanty akṣayā dhruvāḥ ॥13-72-18॥
[दायाद्याः (dāyādyāḥ) - heirs; यस्य (yasya) - whose; वै (vai) - indeed; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; न्यायपूर्वैः (nyāyapūrvaiḥ) - with righteous means; उपार्जिताः (upārjitāḥ) - acquired; प्रदत्ताः (pradattāḥ) - given away; ताः (tāḥ) - those; प्रदातॄणां (pradātṝṇāṃ) - of the donors; सम्भवन्ति (sambhavanti) - bring about; अक्षयाः (akṣayāḥ) - imperishable; ध्रुवाः (dhruvāḥ) - certain;]
(Heirs whose cows, indeed, with righteous means acquired, given away, those of the donors bring about imperishable and certain (results).)
The cows righteously acquired by heirs and given away, indeed, certainly bring imperishable benefits to the donors. (13-72-18)
प्रतिगृह्य च यो दद्याद्गाः सुशुद्धेन चेतसा। तस्यापीहाक्षयाँल्लोकान्ध्रुवान्विद्धि शचीपते ॥१३-७२-१९॥
pratigṛhya ca yo dadyād gāḥ suśuddhena cetasā । tasyāpi iha akṣayān lokān dhruvān viddhi śacī-pate ॥13-72-19॥
[प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - would give; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; सुशुद्धेन (suśuddhena) - very pure; चेतसा (cetasā) - with mind; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अपि (api) - also; इह (iha) - here; अक्षयान् (akṣayān) - imperishable; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; ध्रुवान् (dhruvān) - steady; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; शचीपते (śacīpate) - O lord of Śacī;]
(Having accepted and who would give cows with very pure mind; of him also here imperishable worlds steady know O lord of Śacī.)
O lord of Śacī, know that even for him who, after accepting, gives cows with a very pure mind, here exist steady, imperishable worlds. (13-72-19)
जन्मप्रभृति सत्यं च यो ब्रूयान्नियतेन्द्रियः। गुरुद्विजसहः क्षान्तस्तस्य गोभिः समा गतिः ॥१३-७२-२०॥
janmaprabhṛti satyaṁ ca yo brūyān niyatendriyaḥ। guru-dvija-sahaḥ kṣāntaḥ tasya gobhiḥ samā gatiḥ॥13-72-20॥
[जन्मप्रभृति (janmaprabhṛti) - from birth; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; च (ca) - and; यो (yo) - who; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - should speak; नियतेन्द्रियः (niyatendriyaḥ) - one whose senses are restrained; गुरुद्विजसहः (guru-dvija-sahaḥ) - enduring elders and twice-born; क्षान्तः (kṣāntaḥ) - forbearing; तस्य (tasya) - of him; गोभिः (gobhiḥ) - with cows; समा (samā) - together, equal; गतिः (gatiḥ) - attainment, state, destination;]
(From birth, truth and who should speak, one whose senses are restrained, enduring elders and twice-born, forbearing, of him with cows equal is the attainment.)
He who speaks truth from birth, whose senses are restrained, who endures elders and the twice-born, and is forbearing—his attainment is equal to that of the cows. (13-72-20)
न जातु ब्राह्मणो वाच्यो यदवाच्यं शचीपते। मनसा गोषु न द्रुह्येद्गोवृत्तिर्गोनुकम्पकः ॥१३-७२-२१॥
na jātu brāhmaṇo vācyo yad avācyaṃ śacīpate| manasā goṣu na druhyed govṛttir gonukampakaḥ ॥13-72-21॥
[न (na) - not; जातु (jātu) - ever; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - should be spoken (as); यत् (yat) - what; अवाच्यम् (avācyam) - unspeakable; improper to be said; शचीपते (śacīpate) - O lord of Śacī (O Indra); मनसा (manasā) - by (his) mind; गोषु (goṣu) - towards cows; न (na) - not; द्रुह्येत् (druhyet) - should harm; should wrong; गोवृत्तिः (govṛttiḥ) - one whose conduct is towards cattle; caring for cows; गोनुकम्पकः (gonukampakaḥ) - one who is compassionate to cows;]
(Not ever should a Brāhmaṇa be called what is unspeakable, O lord of Śacī. By mind, towards cows, he should not harm — one whose conduct is with cattle, compassionate to cows.)
O lord of Śacī (Indra), a Brāhmaṇa should never be spoken of in a manner that is improper. One who is devoted to cows and compassionate towards them should never harbor any ill intent toward cows, even in thought. (13-72-21)
सत्ये धर्मे च निरतस्तस्य शक्र फलं शृणु। गोसहस्रेण समिता तस्य धेनुर्भवत्युत ॥१३-७२-२२॥
satye dharme ca niratastasya śakra phalaṃ śṛṇu। gosahasreṇa samitā tasya dhenurbhavatyuta ॥13-72-22॥
[सत्ये (satye) - in truth; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; च (ca) - and; निरतः (nirataḥ) - engaged; तस्य (tasya) - of him; शक्र (śakra) - O Indra; फलं (phalam) - fruit; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; गोसहस्रेण (gosahasreṇa) - by a thousand cows; समिता (samitā) - equal; तस्य (tasya) - of him; धेनुः (dhenuḥ) - cow; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(In truth, in righteousness and engaged—of him, O Indra, the fruit hear. By a thousand cows equal, of him the cow becomes indeed. (13-72-22))
O Indra, hear: The fruit of him who is engaged in truth and righteousness is that his cow becomes equal to a thousand cows. (13-72-22)
क्षत्रियस्य गुणैरेभिरन्वितस्य फलं शृणु। तस्यापि शततुल्या गौर्भवतीति विनिश्चयः ॥१३-७२-२३॥
kṣatriyasya guṇair ebhir anvitasyā phalaṃ śṛṇu. tasyāpi śatatulyā gaur bhavatīti viniścayaḥ ॥13-72-23॥
[क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - of the kṣatriya; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - with virtues; एभिः (ebhiḥ) - with these; अन्वितस्य (anvitasya) - endowed; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; तस्यापि (tasyāpi) - of him also; शततुल्या (śatatulyā) - equal to a hundred; गौर् (gaur) - a cow; भवती (bhavatī) - becomes; इति (iti) - thus; विनिश्चयः (viniścayaḥ) - certainty;]
(Of the kṣatriya, endowed with these virtues, the fruit hear. Of him also, a cow becomes equal to a hundred—thus (is) the certainty.)
Hear the fruit of a kṣatriya who is endowed with these virtues: for him too, a single cow becomes equal to a hundred—this is certain. (13-72-23)
वैश्यस्यैते यदि गुणास्तस्य पञ्चाशतं भवेत्। शूद्रस्यापि विनीतस्य चतुर्भागफलं स्मृतम् ॥१३-७२-२४॥
vaiśyasyaite yadi guṇās tasya pañcāśataṃ bhavet। śūdrasyāpi vinītasya caturbhāgaphalaṃ smṛtam ॥13-72-24॥
[वैश्यस्य (vaiśyasya) - of the Vaiśya; एते (ete) - these; यदि (yadi) - if; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; तस्य (tasya) - his; पञ्चाशतम् (pañcāśatam) - fifty; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; शूद्रस्य (śūdrasya) - of the Śūdra; अपि (api) - also; विनीतस्य (vinītasya) - of the humble; चतुर् (catur) - four; भाग (bhāga) - part; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is remembered;]
(Of the Vaiśya, these if qualities his fifty would be. Of the Śūdra also, of the humble, a fourth-part fruit is remembered.)
If these qualities are found in the Vaiśya, his share is fifty. For the humble Śūdra also, it is remembered that he receives one-fourth of the fruit. (13-72-24)
एतच्चैवं योऽनुतिष्ठेत युक्तः; सत्येन युक्तो गुरुशुश्रूषया च। दान्तः क्षान्तो देवतार्ची प्रशान्तः; शुचिर्बुद्धो धर्मशीलोऽनहंवाक् ॥१३-७२-२५॥
etac caivaṁ yo'nutiṣṭheta yuktaḥ; satyena yukto guruśuśrūṣayā ca। dāntaḥ kṣānto devatārcī praśāntaḥ; śucir buddho dharmaśīlo'nahaṁvāk ॥13-72-25॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; च (ca) - and; एवम् (evam) - thus; यः (yaḥ) - who; अनुतिष्ठेत् (anutiṣṭheta) - would perform; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - self-controlled; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; गुरुशुश्रूषया (guruśuśrūṣayā) - by service to the teacher; च (ca) - and; दान्तः (dāntaḥ) - one who has subdued his senses; क्षान्तः (kṣāntaḥ) - patient; देवतार्ची (devatārcī) - worshipper of the gods; प्रशान्तः (praśāntaḥ) - possessed of tranquility; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; बुद्धः (buddhaḥ) - wise; धर्मशीलः (dharmaśīlaḥ) - righteous; अनहंवाक् (anahaṁvāk) - not arrogant in speech;]
(This and thus who would perform, self-controlled; by truth engaged and by service to the teacher. One who has subdued his senses, patient, worshipper of the gods, possessed of tranquility; pure, wise, righteous, not arrogant in speech. (13-72-25))
Whoever, being self-controlled, performs this as thus stated, engaged in truth and in service to the teacher; who is subdued, patient, a worshipper of the gods, calm, pure, wise, righteous, and without arrogance in speech—he indeed (is laudable). (13-72-25)
महत्फलं प्राप्नुते स द्विजाय; दत्त्वा दोग्ध्रीं विधिनानेन धेनुम्। नित्यं दद्यादेकभक्तः सदा च; सत्ये स्थितो गुरुशुश्रूषिता च ॥१३-७२-२६॥
mahatphalaṃ prāpnute sa dvijāya; dattvā dogdhrīṃ vidhinā anena dhenum. nityaṃ dadyād ekabhaktaḥ sadā ca; satye sthitaḥ guruśuśrūṣitā ca ॥13-72-26॥
[महत्-फलं (mahat-phalaṃ) - great fruit; (great reward;) प्राप्नुते (prāpnute) - obtains; (attains;) सः (saḥ) - he; द्विजाय (dvijāya) - to the twice-born; (to a Brāhmaṇa;) दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; दोग्ध्रीं (dogdhrīṃ) - milk-giving (cow); विधिना (vidhinā) - according to the rule; आनेन (anena) - by this; धेनुम् (dhenum) - cow; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; एक-भक्तः (eka-bhaktaḥ) - taking food once a day; सदा (sadā) - always; च (ca) - and; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; (established;) गुरु-शुश्रूषिता (guru-śuśrūṣitā) - has served (his) teacher; च (ca) - and;]
(Great reward (he) obtains he to the twice-born; having given a milk-giving cow according to this rule. Always should give, eating once a day, always and; established in truth and having served the teacher also.)
He obtains great reward who, having given a milk-yielding cow to a Brāhmaṇa in accordance with this rule, always gives, takes food only once a day, is always established in truth, and has served his teacher. (13-72-26)
वेदाध्यायी गोषु यो भक्तिमांश्च; नित्यं दृष्ट्वा योऽभिनन्देत गाश्च। आ जातितो यश्च गवां नमेत; इदं फलं शक्र निबोध तस्य ॥१३-७२-२७॥
vedādhyāyī goṣu yo bhaktimāṁś ca; nityaṁ dṛṣṭvā yo'bhinandeta gāś ca. ā jātito yaś ca gavāṁ nameta; idaṁ phalaṁ śakra nibodha tasya ॥13-72-27॥
[वेदाध्यायी (vedādhyāyī) - Veda-reciter; गोषु (goṣu) - among cows; यः (yaḥ) - who; भक्तिमान् (bhaktimān) - devoted; च (ca) - and; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; यः (yaḥ) - who; अभिनन्देत (abhinandeta) - would greet; गाः (gāḥ) - the cows; च (ca) - and; आ (ā) - from; जातितः (jātitaḥ) - birth; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; गवाम् (gavām) - to cows; नमेत (nameta) - would bow; इदं (idaṁ) - this; फलं (phalaṁ) - fruit; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; तस्य (tasya) - of him;]
(Veda-reciter among cows who devoted and; always having seen who would greet the cows and; from birth who and to cows would bow; this fruit O Śakra understand of him.)
He who, being a Veda-reciter, is devoted among cows, and who always greets the cows when he sees them, and who bows to cows from birth—O Śakra, understand this is the fruit belonging to him. (13-72-27)
यत्स्यादिष्ट्वा राजसूये फलं तु; यत्स्यादिष्ट्वा बहुना काञ्चनेन। एतत्तुल्यं फलमस्याहुरग्र्यं; सर्वे सन्तस्त्वृषयो ये च सिद्धाः ॥१३-७२-२८॥
yatsyādiṣṭvā rājasūye phalaṃ tu; yatsyādiṣṭvā bahunā kāñcanena। etattulyaṃ phalamasya āhuragryaṃ; sarve santastvṛṣayo ye ca siddhāḥ ॥13-72-28॥
[यत् (yat) - which; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; इष्ट्वा (iṣṭvā) - having performed the sacrifice; राजसूये (rājasūye) - in the Rājasūya [sacrifice]; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; reward; तु (tu) - but; यत् (yat) - which; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; इष्ट्वा (iṣṭvā) - having performed (the sacrifice); बहुना (bahunā) - with much; काञ्चनेन (kāñcanena) - with gold; एतत्तुल्यं (etattulyaṃ) - equal to this; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; reward; अस्य (asya) - of this; आहु: (āhuḥ) - they say; अग्र्यम् (agryam) - highest; excellent; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सन्त: (santaḥ) - good people; wise; त्व् (tv) - indeed; ऋषय: (ṛṣayaḥ) - seers; sages; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; सिद्धा: (siddhāḥ) - perfected; accomplished;]
(Which would be, having performed the Rājasūya, the reward; but which would be, having worshipped with much gold; equal to this, the fruit of this, they say is highest; all good people, the seers and those who are perfected.)
The reward attained by performing the Rājasūya sacrifice, and the reward attained by worship with abundant gold—these, all sages, good people, and accomplished ones say, are equal to the highest fruit of this. (13-72-28)
योऽग्रं भक्तान्किञ्चिदप्राश्य दद्या; द्गोभ्यो नित्यं गोव्रती सत्यवादी। शान्तो बुद्धो गोसहस्रस्य पुण्यं; संवत्सरेणाप्नुयात्पुण्यशीलः ॥१३-७२-२९॥
yo’graṃ bhaktānkiñcidaprāśya dadyā; dgobhyo nityaṃ govratī satyavādī. śānto buddho gosahasrasya puṇyaṃ; saṃvatsareṇāpnuyāt puṇyaśīlaḥ ॥13-72-29॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अग्रं (agraṃ) - the first portion; भक्तान् (bhaktān) - to devotees; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; अप्राश्य (aprāśya) - without eating; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; गौभ्यः (gobhyaḥ) - to cows; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; गोव्रती (govratī) - performer of vow relating to cows; सत्यवादी (satyavādī) - speaker of truth; शान्तः (śāntaḥ) - peaceful; बुद्धः (buddhaḥ) - wise; गोसहस्रस्य (gosahasrasya) - of a thousand cows; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - merit; संवत्सरेण (saṃvatsareṇa) - in a year; आप्नुयात् (āpnuyāt) - may obtain; पुण्यशीलः (puṇyaśīlaḥ) - one who is virtuous;]
(Who, the first portion to devotees a little without eating, should give; to cows always, vow-keeper relating to cows, speaker of truth, peaceful, wise, of a thousand cows, merit, in a year, may obtain, one who is virtuous.)
He who, without eating even a little of the first portion, gives it to devotees, always gives to cows, observes the vow concerning cows, speaks the truth, is peaceful and wise—such a virtuous person gains the merit of giving a thousand cows in a year. (13-72-29)
य एकं भक्तमश्नीयाद्दद्यादेकं गवां च यत्। दश वर्षाण्यनन्तानि गोव्रती गोनुकम्पकः ॥१३-७२-३०॥
ya ekaṁ bhaktam aśnīyāt dadyāt ekaṁ gavāṁ ca yat। daśa varṣāṇy anantāni govratī go-nukampakaḥ ॥13-72-30॥
[य (ya) - who; एकं (ekaṁ) - one; भक्तम् (bhaktam) - cooked rice; अश्नीयात् (aśnīyāt) - should eat; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; एकं (ekaṁ) - one; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - what; दश (daśa) - ten; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; अनन्तानि (anantāni) - endless; गोव्रती (govratī) - observing the vow regarding cows; गोनुकम्पकः (go-nukampakaḥ) - protector of cows;]
(Who one cooked-rice should eat, should give one of cows also what; ten years endless observing-cow-vow protector-of-cows.)
Whoever should eat one cooked-rice and should give one thing of cows also, he who observes the vow regarding cows and is a protector of cows obtains endless ten years of merit. (13-72-30)
एकेनैव च भक्तेन यः क्रीत्वा गां प्रयच्छति। यावन्ति तस्य प्रोक्तानि दिवसानि शतक्रतो ॥ तावच्छतानां स गवां फलमाप्नोति शाश्वतम् ॥१३-७२-३१॥
ekenaīva ca bhaktena yaḥ kr̥tvā gāṃ prayacchati. yāvanti tasya proktāni divasāni śatakrato ॥ tāvacchatānāṃ sa gavāṃ phalam āpnoti śāśvatam ॥13-72-31॥
[एकेनैव (ekenaīva) - with only one; indeed; च (ca) - and; भक्तेन (bhaktena) - by a devotee; यः (yaḥ) - who; क्रीत्वा (kr̥tvā) - having purchased; गाम् (gāṃ) - a cow; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives; यावन्ति (yāvanti) - as many as; तस्य (tasya) - his; प्रोक्तानि (proktāni) - spoken; दिवसानि (divasāni) - days; शतक्रतो (śatakrato) - O Indra; तावत् (tāvat) - so many; शतानाम् (śatānāṃ) - hundreds; स (sa) - he; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - obtains; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal;]
(With only one, indeed, and by a devotee, who having purchased a cow gives, as many as his spoken days, O Indra, so many hundreds he the fruit of cows obtains eternal.)
If a devotee purchases and gives a single cow, O Indra, then for as many days as are spoken (prescribed), he obtains the eternal fruit of hundreds of cows. (13-72-31)
ब्राह्मणस्य फलं हीदं क्षत्रियेऽभिहितं शृणु। पञ्चवार्षिकमेतत्तु क्षत्रियस्य फलं स्मृतम् ॥ ततोऽर्धेन तु वैश्यस्य शूद्रो वैश्यार्धतः स्मृतः ॥१३-७२-३२॥
brāhmaṇasya phalaṃ hīdaṃ kṣatriye'bhihitaṃ śṛṇu। pañcavārṣikam etat tu kṣatriyasya phalaṃ smṛtam॥ tato'rdhena tu vaiśyasya śūdro vaiśyārdhataḥ smṛtaḥ॥13-72-32॥
[ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of a Brāhmaṇa; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; (reward; result;) हि (hi) - indeed; (for; verily;) इदं (idaṃ) - this; क्षत्रिये (kṣatriye) - to a Kṣatriya; अभिहितं (abhihitam) - declared; spoken; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; पञ्चवार्षिकम् (pañcavārṣikam) - of five years; lasting five years; एतत् (etat) - this; तु (tu) - but; indeed; क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - of a Kṣatriya; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; (reward; result;) स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is remembered; is considered; ततः (tataḥ) - thereupon; thereafter; अर्धेन (ardhena) - by (its) half; तु (tu) - but; indeed; वैश्यस्य (vaiśyasya) - of a Vaiśya; शूद्रः (śūdraḥ) - a Śūdra; वैश्यार्धतः (vaiśyārdhataḥ) - by half of (that of) a Vaiśya; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is considered; is regarded;]
(Of a Brāhmaṇa the fruit indeed this to a Kṣatriya is declared, listen. Five-year (reward) this but of a Kṣatriya the fruit is considered. Thereafter, by half indeed of a Vaiśya; a Śūdra by half of a Vaiśya is considered.)
The reward of a Brāhmaṇa—listen to what is declared for a Kṣatriya. This is considered the Kṣatriya’s reward for five years. Thereafter, the Vaiśya receives half of that, and a Śūdra is regarded as receiving half of the Vaiśya’s portion. (13-72-32)
यश्चात्मविक्रयं कृत्वा गाः क्रीत्वा सम्प्रयच्छति। यावतीः स्पर्शयेद्गा वै तावत्तु फलमश्नुते ॥ लोम्नि लोम्नि महाभाग लोकाश्चास्याक्षयाः स्मृताः ॥१३-७२-३३॥
yaś cātmavikrayaṃ kṛtvā gāḥ krītvā samprayacchati। yāvatīḥ sparśayed gā vai tāvattu phalamaśnute॥ lomni lomni mahābhāga lokāś cāsyākṣayāḥ smṛtāḥ॥ 13-72-33॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; आत्मविक्रयम् (ātmavikrayam) - sale of oneself; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; क्रीत्वा (krītvā) - having bought; सम्प्रयच्छति (samprayacchati) - gives; यावतीः (yāvatīḥ) - as many as; स्पर्शयेत् (sparśayet) - one touches; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; वै (vai) - indeed; तावत् (tāvat) - so much; तु (tu) - but; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains; लोम्नि (lomni) - on each hair; लोम्नि (lomni) - on each hair; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate one; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; अक्षयाः (akṣayāḥ) - imperishable; स्मृताः (smṛtāḥ) - are considered; १३-७२-३३ (13-72-33) - (13-72-33);]
(Who, having sold himself, having bought cows, gives (them); as many cows as one touches, so much fruit he attains indeed. On each hair, on each hair, O greatly fortunate one, worlds of him are considered imperishable. (13-72-33))
Whoever, having sold himself, purchases cows and gives them away; for as many cows as he touches, he attains reward accordingly. On each and every hair, O greatly fortunate one, imperishable worlds for him are declared. (13-72-33)
सङ्ग्रामेष्वर्जयित्वा तु यो वै गाः सम्प्रयच्छति। आत्मविक्रयतुल्यास्ताः शाश्वता विद्धि कौशिक ॥१३-७२-३४॥
saṅgrāmeṣvarjayitvā tu yo vai gāḥ samprayacchati. ātmavikrayatulyāstāḥ śāśvatā viddhi kauśika ॥13-72-34॥
[सङ्ग्रामेषु (saṅgrāmeṣu) - in battles; अर्जयित्वा (arjayitvā) - having acquired; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; सम्प्रयच्छति (samprayacchati) - gives; आत्मविक्रयतुल्याः (ātmavikrayatulyāḥ) - equal to selling oneself; ताः (tāḥ) - those; शाश्वताः (śāśvatāḥ) - eternal; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; कौशिक (kauśika) - O Kauśika;]
(In battles, having acquired, but who indeed cows gives, equal to selling oneself those, eternal, know, O Kauśika.)
O Kauśika, know that those who give cows acquired in battles, their gift is as if they have sold themselves; such gifts are enduring. (13-72-34)
अलाभे यो गवां दद्यात्तिलधेनुं यतव्रतः। दुर्गात्स तारितो धेन्वा क्षीरनद्यां प्रमोदते ॥१३-७२-३५॥
alābhe yo gavāṃ dadyāt tiladhenum yatavrataḥ। durgāt sa tārito dhenvā kṣīranadyāṃ pramodate ॥13-72-35॥
[अलाभे (alābhe) - in absence of gain; यः (yaḥ) - who; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; तिलधेनुम् (tiladhenum) - sesame-cow (cow made of sesame seeds); यतव्रतः (yatavrataḥ) - who is self-restrained in vow; दुर्गात् (durgāt) - from danger; सः (saḥ) - he; तारितः (tāritaḥ) - rescued; धेन्वा (dhenvā) - by a cow; क्षीरनद्याम् (kṣīranadyām) - in the milk river; प्रमोदते (pramodate) - rejoices;]
(In absence of gain, who of cows should give sesame-cow, self-restrained in vow; from danger he rescued by a cow, in the milk river rejoices.)
If one who is self-restrained in vow, in case cows are not available, gives a cow made of sesame seeds, he is rescued from peril by a cow and rejoices in the river of milk. (13-72-35)
न त्वेवासां दानमात्रं प्रशस्तं; पात्रं कालो गोविशेषो विधिश्च। कालज्ञानं विप्र गवान्तरं हि; दुःखं ज्ञातुं पावकादित्यभूतम् ॥१३-७२-३६॥
na tvevāsāṃ dānamātraṃ praśastaṃ; pātraṃ kālo goviśeṣo vidhiś ca. kālajñānaṃ vipra gavāntaraṃ hi; duḥkhaṃ jñātuṃ pāvakādityabhūtam ॥13-72-36॥
[न (na) - not; त् (t) - indeed; एव (eva) - certainly; असां (asāṃ) - of these; दानमात्रं (dānamātraṃ) - mere giving; प्रशस्तं (praśastaṃ) - praiseworthy; पात्रं (pātraṃ) - recipient; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; गोविशेषः (goviśeṣaḥ) - particular kind of cow; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - rule; च (ca) - and; कालज्ञानं (kālajñānam) - knowledge of the proper time; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; गवान्तरं (gavāntaram) - difference among cows; हि (hi) - indeed; दुःखं (duḥkham) - difficulty; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; पावकादित्यभूतम् (pāvakādityabhūtam) - related to fire, sun, elements;]
(Not indeed merely the giving of these is praiseworthy; the recipient, time, specific cow, and rule. Knowledge of the right time, O Brāhmaṇa, and the distinction among cows, indeed; difficulty to know (those things) associated with fire, sun, and elements.)
The mere act of giving these is not truly praiseworthy; one must consider the recipient, the timing, the particular kind of cow, and the rule. Knowing the correct time and the differences among cows, O Brāhmaṇa, is truly difficult—to discern the subtleties related to fire, the sun, and the elements. (13-72-36)
स्वाध्यायाढ्यं शुद्धयोनिं प्रशान्तं; वैतानस्थं पापभीरुं कृतज्ञम्। गोषु क्षान्तं नातितीक्ष्णं शरण्यं; वृत्तिग्लानं तादृशं पात्रमाहुः ॥१३-७२-३७॥

(Abundant in self-study, of pure origin, peaceful; practised in Vaitāna rites, afraid of sin, grateful. Toward cows forbearing, not too harsh, refuge-giving; whose livelihood is worn out, such one as this, a fit recipient, they call. (13-72-37))
One who is abundant in self-study, of pure lineage, peaceful, engaged in Vaitāna rites, afraid of sin, grateful; who is patient towards cows, not excessively harsh, offers refuge, and whose livelihood is distressed—such a person, they say, is a fit recipient. (13-72-37)
वृत्तिग्लाने सीदति चातिमात्रं; कृष्यर्थं वा होमहेतोः प्रसूत्याम्। गुर्वर्थं वा बालसंवृद्धये वा; धेनुं दद्याद्देशकाले विशिष्टे ॥१३-७२-३८॥
vṛttiglāne sīdati cātimātraṃ; kṛṣyartham vā homahetor prasūtyām. gurvartham vā bālasaṃvṛddhaye vā; dhenuṃ dadyād deśakāle viśiṣṭe ॥13-72-38॥
[वृत्तिग्लाने (vṛttiglāne) - (when) enfeebled by old age; सीदति (sīdati) - becomes weak; च (ca) - and; अतिमात्रं (atimātram) - excessively; कृष्यर्थं (kṛṣyartham) - for the purpose of agriculture; वा (vā) - or; होमहेतोः (homahetoḥ) - for the reason of a sacrificial rite; प्रसूत्याम् (prasūtyām) - on giving birth; गुर्वर्थं (gurvartham) - for the sake of the teacher; बालसंवृद्धये (bālasaṃvṛddhaye) - for the upbringing of a child; वा (vā) - or; धेनुं (dhenuṃ) - a cow; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; देशकाले (deśakāle) - in proper place and time; विशिष्टे (viśiṣṭe) - specified;]
(When (a cow) becomes weak by enfeeblement due to old age, and excessively, or for the purpose of agriculture, or on account of a sacrificial rite, or on giving birth, or for the sake of a teacher, or for the upbringing of a child, one should give a cow at the specified place and time.)
If a cow is excessively weakened by old age, or for purposes such as agriculture, sacrificial rites, after giving birth, for the benefit of a teacher, or for raising a child, then one should give a cow at the proper place and time. (13-72-38)
अन्तर्जाताः सुक्रयज्ञानलब्धाः; प्राणक्रीता निर्जिताश्चौकजाश्च। कृच्छ्रोत्सृष्टाः पोषणाभ्यागताश्च; द्वारैरेतैर्गोविशेषाः प्रशस्ताः ॥१३-७२-३९॥
antarjātāḥ sukrayajñānalabdhāḥ; prāṇakrītā nirjitāścaukajāśca। kṛcchrotsṛṣṭāḥ poṣaṇābhyāgatāśca; dvārairetairgoviśeṣāḥ praśastāḥ ॥13-72-39॥
[अन्तर्जाताः (antarjātāḥ) - born within (the community); सुक्रयज्ञानलब्धाः (sukrayajñānalabdhāḥ) - obtained through proper purchase and knowledge; प्राणक्रीताः (prāṇakrītāḥ) - acquired by giving life (life-ransom); निर्जिताः (nirjitāḥ) - won (in contest); चौकजाः (caukajāḥ) - secured from the cattle pen; कृच्छ्रोत्सृष्टाः (kṛcchrotsṛṣṭāḥ) - released due to distress; पोषणाभ्यागताः (poṣaṇābhyāgatāḥ) - arrived for nourishment; द्वारैः (dvāraiḥ) - by means (types, circumstances); एतैः (etaiḥ) - by these; गोविशेषाः (goviśeṣāḥ) - special classes of cows; प्रशस्ताः (praśastāḥ) - are praised;]
(Born within, obtained through proper purchase and knowledge, acquired by giving life, won in contest, secured from the cattle pen, released due to distress, arrived for nourishment—by these means, these special classes of cows are praised.)
Cows of these special categories—those born within, properly purchased and known, acquired by ransoming life, won in contests, secured from cattle pens, released due to distress, and those that have come for nourishment—are all regarded as commendable. (13-72-39)
बलान्विताः शीलवयोपपन्नाः; सर्वाः प्रशंसन्ति सुगन्धवत्यः। यथा हि गङ्गा सरितां वरिष्ठा; तथार्जुनीनां कपिला वरिष्ठा ॥१३-७२-४०॥
balānvitāḥ śīlava yopapannāḥ; sarvāḥ praśaṁsanti sugandhavatyaḥ. yathā hi gaṅgā saritām variṣṭhā; tathārjunīnām kapilā variṣṭhā ॥13-72-40॥
[बलान्विताः (balānvitāḥ) - endowed with strength; शीलवयोपपन्नाः (śīla-vayaḥ-upapannāḥ) - possessed of virtue and age; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all (feminine plural); प्रशंसन्ति (praśaṁsanti) - praise; सुगन्धवत्यः (sugandhavatyaḥ) - fragrant ones (feminine plural); यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā (the river); सरितां (saritām) - of rivers; वरिष्ठा (variṣṭhā) - most excellent; तथा (tathā) - so; अर्जुनीनां (arjunīnām) - of the arjunīs (a kind of cow); कपिला (kapilā) - the tawny (cow); वरिष्ठा (variṣṭhā) - the best;]
(Endowed with strength, possessed of virtue and age; all praise the fragrant ones. Just as indeed Gaṅgā is the most excellent of rivers, so of the arjunīs the tawny cow is the best. (13-72-40))
Endowed with strength, possessing good character and age, all praise the fragrant ones. Just as Gaṅgā is the foremost among rivers, so the tawny cow is the best among arjunī cows. (13-72-40)
तिस्रो रात्रीस्त्वद्भिरुपोष्य भूमौ; तृप्ता गावस्तर्पितेभ्यः प्रदेयाः। वत्सैः पुष्टैः क्षीरपैः सुप्रचारा; स्त्र्यहं दत्त्वा गोरसैर्वर्तितव्यम् ॥१३-७२-४१॥
tisro rātrīs tvadbhir upoṣya bhūmau; tṛptā gāvas tarpitebhyaḥ pradeyāḥ. vatsaiḥ puṣṭaiḥ kṣīrapaiḥ supracārā; stryahaṃ dattvā gorasair vartitavyam ॥13-72-41॥
[तिस्रः (tisraḥ) - three; रात्र्यः (rātryaḥ) - nights; त्वद्भिः (tvadbhir) - by you; उपोष्य (upoṣya) - having fasted; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; तृप्ताः (tṛptāḥ) - satisfied; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; तर्पितेभ्यः (tarpitebhyaḥ) - to those who are satisfied; प्रदेयाः (pradeyāḥ) - should be given; वत्सैः (vatsaiḥ) - with calves; पुष्टैः (puṣṭaiḥ) - well-nourished; क्षीरपैः (kṣīrapaiḥ) - milk-drinking; सुप्रचाराः (supracārāḥ) - well-behaved; स्त्र्यहम् (stryaham) - three days; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; गोरसैः (gorasaiḥ) - with products of cow; वर्तितव्यम् (vartitavyam) - should be sustained;]
(Three nights by you having fasted on the ground; satisfied cows to the satisfied (recipients) should be given. With well-nourished, milk-drinking, well-behaved calves; for three days, having given (the cows), one should subsist on cow products.)
You must fast on the ground for three nights; afterward, cows that are satisfied should be given to those who are satisfied. With well-nourished, milk-drinking, well-behaved calves (attached), after giving them for three days, one should sustain oneself only on cow products. (13-72-41)
दत्त्वा धेनुं सुव्रतां साधुवत्सां; कल्याणवृत्तामपलायिनीं च। यावन्ति लोमानि भवन्ति तस्या; स्तावन्ति वर्षाणि वसत्यमुत्र ॥१३-७२-४२॥
dattvā dhenuṃ suvratāṃ sādhuvatsāṃ; kalyāṇavṛttāmapalāyinīṃ ca। yāvanti lomāni bhavanti tasyā; stāvanti varṣāṇi vasatyamutra ॥13-72-42॥
[दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; धेनुं (dhenuṃ) - a cow; सुव्रतां (suvratāṃ) - of good vows; साधुवत्सां (sādhuvatsāṃ) - having a good calf; कल्याणवृत्ताम् (kalyāṇavṛttām) - of auspicious conduct; अपलायिनीं (apalāyinīṃ) - not running away; च (ca) - and; यावन्ति (yāvanti) - as many as; लोमानि (lomāni) - hairs; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; तस्या (tasyā) - of her; स्तावन्ति (stāvanti) - so many; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; वसति (vasati) - resides; अमुत्र (amutra) - there (in the other world);]
(Having given a cow of good vows, having a good calf, of auspicious conduct, not running away, and as many hairs as are of her, so many years one resides there.)
One who gives a cow of good vows, with a good calf, auspicious conduct, and not running away—he dwells there (in heaven) for as many years as there are hairs on her body. (13-72-42)
तथानड्वाहं ब्राह्मणायाथ धुर्यं; दत्त्वा युवानं बलिनं विनीतम्। हलस्य वोढारमनन्तवीर्यं; प्राप्नोति लोकान्दशधेनुदस्य ॥१३-७२-४३॥
tathā naḍvāhaṃ brāhmaṇāyātha dhuryaṃ; dattvā yuvānaṃ balinaṃ vinītam। halasya voḍhāram anantavīryaṃ; prāpnoti lokān daśadhenudasya ॥13-72-43॥
[तथा (tathā) - in this manner; नड्वाहं (naḍvāhaṃ) - draught animal; ब्राह्मणाय (brāhmaṇāya) - to a Brāhmaṇa; अथ (atha) - then; धुर्यं (dhuryaṃ) - yoke-bearing (animal); दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; युवानं (yuvānaṃ) - young; बलिनं (balinaṃ) - strong; विनीतम् (vinītam) - well-trained; हलस्य (halasya) - of the plough; वोढारम् (voḍhāram) - bearer; अनन्तवीर्यं (anantavīryaṃ) - of endless strength; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; दशधेनुदस्य (daśadhenudasya) - of the giver of ten cows;]
(In this manner, a draught animal, to a Brāhmaṇa then a yoke-bearing (animal), having given, young, strong, well-trained, of the plough, bearer, of endless strength, attains worlds, of the giver of ten cows.)
In this way, one who gives a young, strong, and well-trained draught animal—capable of bearing the plough and of endless strength—to a Brāhmaṇa, attains the worlds (merit) that are obtained by the giver of ten cows. (13-72-43)
कान्तारे ब्राह्मणान्गाश्च यः परित्राति कौशिक। क्षेमेण च विमुच्येत तस्य पुण्यफलं शृणु ॥ अश्वमेधक्रतोस्तुल्यं फलं भवति शाश्वतम् ॥१३-७२-४४॥
kāntāre brāhmaṇān gāś ca yaḥ paritrāti kauśika। kṣemeṇa ca vimucyeta tasya puṇyaphalaṃ śṛṇu॥ aśvamedhakratoḥ tulyaṃ phalaṃ bhavati śāśvatam॥13-72-44॥
[कान्तारे (kāntāre) - in the forest; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas (accusative plural); गाः (gāḥ) - cows (accusative plural); च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; परित्राति (paritrāti) - rescues; कौशिक (kauśika) - O Kauśika; क्षेमेण (kṣemeṇa) - with safety; च (ca) - and; विमुच्येत (vimucyeta) - is released, becomes free; तस्य (tasya) - his; पुण्यफलं (puṇyaphalaṃ) - fruit of merit; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; अश्वमेधक्रतोः (aśvamedhakratoḥ) - of an Aśvamedha-sacrifice; तुल्यं (tulyaṃ) - equal; फलं (phalaṃ) - result; भवति (bhavati) - becomes, is; शाश्वतम् (śāśvatam) - eternal;]
(In the forest, Brāhmaṇas and cows, who rescues, O Kauśika, with safety and is released, his fruit of merit hear. Of the Aśvamedha-sacrifice, an equal result becomes eternal.)
O Kauśika, whoever rescues Brāhmaṇas and cows in the forest and brings them to safety, listen to the merit he obtains: he gains an eternal result equal to that of an Aśvamedha sacrifice. (13-72-44)
मृत्युकाले सहस्राक्ष यां वृत्तिमनुकाङ्क्षते। लोकान्बहुविधान्दिव्यान्यद्वास्य हृदि वर्तते ॥१३-७२-४५॥
mṛtyukāle sahasrākṣa yāṃ vṛttim anukāṅkṣate। lokān bahuvidhān divyān yad vā asya hṛdi vartate॥13-72-45॥
[मृत्युकाले (mṛtyukāle) - at the time of death; सहस्राक्ष (sahasrākṣa) - O Thousand-eyed one; यां (yāṃ) - which; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - state; अनुकाङ्क्षते (anukāṅkṣate) - desires; wants; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; बहुविधान् (bahuvidhān) - of many kinds; diverse; दिव्यान् (divyān) - divine; यद् (yad) - which; वा (vā) - or; अस्य (asya) - his; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; is present;]
(At the time of death, O Thousand-eyed one, whichever state he desires, or whichever diverse divine worlds are present in his heart,)
O Thousand-eyed one, at the time of death, whichever state a person desires or whichever diverse divine worlds are present in his heart, (13-72-45)
तत्सर्वं समवाप्नोति कर्मणा तेन मानवः। गोभिश्च समनुज्ञातः सर्वत्र स महीयते ॥१३-७२-४६॥
tatsarvaṃ samavāpnoti karmaṇā tena mānavaḥ. gobhiśca samanujñātaḥ sarvatra sa mahīyate ॥13-72-46॥
[तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; समवाप्नोति (samavāpnoti) - entirely attains; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; तेन (tena) - by that; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - human being; गोभिः (gobhiḥ) - by cows; च (ca) - and; समनुज्ञातः (samanujñātaḥ) - approved; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; स (sa) - he; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(That all entirely attains by action by that human being; by the cows and approved, everywhere he is honored.)
That human being, by such action, attains all; being approved by the cows also, he is honored everywhere. (13-72-46)
यस्त्वेतेनैव विधिना गां वनेष्वनुगच्छति। तृणगोमयपर्णाशी निःस्पृहो नियतः शुचिः ॥१३-७२-४७॥
yas tv etenaiva vidhinā gāṃ vaneṣv anugacchati। tṛṇagomayaparṇāśī niḥspṛho niyataḥ śuciḥ॥13-72-47॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; (he who;) ; तु (tu) - but; however; on the other hand; एतेन (etena) - by this; with this; एव (eva) - indeed; just; only; विधिना (vidhinā) - with method; by rule; by ritual; गाम् (gām) - cow; (here, earth); वनेषु (vaneṣu) - in the forests; अनुगच्छति (anugacchati) - follows; goes after; तृणगोमयपर्णाशी (tṛṇagomayaparṇāśī) - eating grass, cow-dung, and leaves; निःस्पृहः (niḥspṛhaḥ) - free from desire; नियतः (niyataḥ) - disciplined; self-controlled; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure;]
(But he who, by this very method, follows the cow (earth) in the forests, eating grass, cow-dung, and leaves, free from desire, disciplined, pure.)
But he who, by this same method, follows the cow (the earth) in the forests, subsisting on grass, cow-dung, and leaves, being free from desire, disciplined, and pure, (he is virtuous). (13-72-47)
अकामं तेन वस्तव्यं मुदितेन शतक्रतो। मम लोके सुरैः सार्धं लोके यत्रापि चेच्छति ॥१३-७२-४८॥
akāmaṃ tena vastavyaṃ muditena śatakrato। mama loke suraiḥ sārdhaṃ loke yatrāpi cecchati ॥13-72-48॥
[अकामं (akāmaṃ) - without desire; तेन (tena) - by him; वस्तव्यं (vastavyaṃ) - to be dwelled; मुदितेन (muditena) - with joy; शतक्रतो (śatakrato) - O Śatakratu (Indra; vocative); मम (mama) - my; लोके (loke) - in the world; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - with the gods; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together with; लोके (loke) - in the world; यत्र (yatra) - where; अपि (api) - even; चेत् (cet) - if; इच्छति (icchati) - he desires;]
(Without desire, by him should be dwelled with joy, O Śatakratu, in my world with the gods together, in the world where even if he desires.)
O Śatakratu, without desire, he should live joyfully in my world, together with the gods, wherever he may wish, in any world. (13-72-48)
