जानन्यो गामपहरेद्विक्रीयाद्वार्थकारणात्। एतद्विज्ञातुमिच्छामि का नु तस्य गतिर्भवेत् ॥१३-७३-१॥
jānanyo gām apahared vikrīyād vā arthakāraṇāt. etad vijñātum icchāmi kā nu tasya gatir bhavet ॥13-73-1॥
[जानन् (jānan) - knowing; यः (yaḥ) - he who; गाम् (gām) - cow (accusative singular); अपहरेत् (apaharet) - should take away; विक्रीयात् (vikrīyāt) - should sell; वा (vā) - or; अर्थकारणात् (arthakāraṇāt) - because of wealth reason; एतत् (etat) - this; विज्ञातुम् (vijñātum) - to know; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; का (kā) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - of him; गतिः (gatiḥ) - course; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be;]
(Knowing, he who should take away a cow, or should sell (her) because of wealth reason, this to know I wish; what indeed of him course would be? (13-73-1))
I wish to know what indeed would be the course (fate) of one who, knowing, takes away or sells a cow for the sake of wealth. (13-73-1)
ब्रह्मोवाच॥

Brahmā said.
भक्षार्थं विक्रयार्थं वा येऽपहारं हि कुर्वते। दानार्थं वा ब्राह्मणाय तत्रेदं श्रूयतां फलम् ॥१३-७३-२॥
bhakṣārthaṃ vikrayārthaṃ vā ye'phāraṃ hi kurvate। dānārthaṃ vā brāhmaṇāya tatredaṃ śrūyatāṃ phalam ॥13-73-2॥
[भक्षार्थं (bhakṣārtham) - for the purpose of eating; विक्रयार्थं (vikrayārtham) - for the purpose of selling; वा (vā) - or; ये (ye) - those who; अपहारं (apahāram) - the act of taking away; theft; हि (hi) - indeed; कुर्वते (kurvate) - do; perform; दानार्थं (dānārtham) - for the purpose of giving as charity; वा (vā) - or; ब्राह्मणाय (brāhmaṇāya) - to a Brāhmaṇa; तत्र (tatra) - there; in that case; इदं (idaṃ) - this; श्रूयतां (śrūyatām) - let it be heard; फलम् (phalam) - result; fruit;]
(For the purpose of eating, for the purpose of selling, or those who indeed commit theft, for the purpose of charity, or to a Brāhmaṇa — there, let this result be heard.)
Whether one commits theft for eating, selling, charity, or to give to a Brāhmaṇa — listen here to the result of such an act. (13-73-2)
विक्रयार्थं हि यो हिंस्याद्भक्षयेद्वा निरङ्कुशः। घातयानं हि पुरुषं येऽनुमन्येयुरर्थिनः ॥१३-७३-३॥
vikrayārthaṃ hi yo hiṃsyādbhaksayedvā niraṅkuśaḥ। ghātayānaṃ hi puruṣaṃ ye'numanyeyurarthinaḥ ॥13-73-3॥
[विक्रयार्थम् (vikrayārtham) - for the purpose of sale; हि (hi) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; हिंस्यात् (hiṃsyāt) - would kill; भक्षयेत् (bhakṣayet) - would eat; वा (vā) - or; निरङ्कुशः (niraṅkuśaḥ) - unrestrained; घातयानम् (ghātayānam) - subject to killing; हि (hi) - indeed; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - person; ये (ye) - who; अनुमन्येयुः (anumanyeyuḥ) - would consent; अर्थिनः (arthinaḥ) - the desirous (of profit);]
(For the purpose of sale indeed, who would kill or eat (something), unrestrained; to the person subject to killing indeed, who would consent (are) the desirous (of profit).)
Indeed, one who, unrestrained, kills or eats (an animal) for the sake of sale, and those who desire profit and approve of a person subject to being killed, (are blameworthy). (13-73-3)
घातकः खादको वापि तथा यश्चानुमन्यते। यावन्ति तस्या लोमानि तावद्वर्षाणि मज्जति ॥१३-७३-४॥
ghātakaḥ khādako vāpi tathā yaścānumanyate। yāvanti tasyā lomāni tāvadvārṣāṇi majjati ॥13-73-4॥
[घातकः (ghātakaḥ) - killer; खादकः (khādakaḥ) - eater; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; तथा (tathā) - likewise; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; अनुमन्यते (anumanyate) - permits; यावन्ति (yāvanti) - as many as; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; लोमानि (lomāni) - hairs; तावत् (tāvat) - so many; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; मज्जति (majjati) - sinks;]
(The killer, the eater, or also likewise the one who permits; as many hairs as she has, for so many years sinks.)
The killer, the eater, and also the one who permits—each sinks for as many years as the number of her hairs. (13-73-4)
ये दोषा यादृशाश्चैव द्विजयज्ञोपघातके। विक्रये चापहारे च ते दोषा वै स्मृताः प्रभो ॥१३-७३-५॥
ye doṣā yādṛśāścaiva dvijayajñopaghātake। vikraye cāpahāre ca te doṣā vai smṛtāḥ prabho ॥13-73-5॥
[ये (ye) - which; दोषा (doṣā) - faults; यादृशाश्च (yādṛśāśca) - of such kind and; एव (eva) - indeed; द्विजयज्ञोपघातके (dvijayajñopaghātake) - in injury to the sacrifice of the twice-born; विक्रये (vikraye) - in sale; च (ca) - and; अपहारे (apahāre) - in theft; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - those; दोषा (doṣā) - faults; वै (vai) - indeed; स्मृताः (smṛtāḥ) - are regarded; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Which faults of such kind indeed in the injury to the sacrifice of the twice-born, in sale and in theft, those faults indeed are regarded, O lord.)
O lord, the faults of such kind as found in injury to the sacrifice of the twice-born, as well as in sale and theft, are indeed regarded as those (same) faults. (13-73-5)
अपहृत्य तु यो गां वै ब्राह्मणाय प्रयच्छति। यावद्दाने फलं तस्यास्तावन्निरयमृच्छति ॥१३-७३-६॥
apahṛtya tu yo gāṃ vai brāhmaṇāya prayacchati। yāvad-dāne phalaṃ tasyās-tāvannirayam ṛcchati ॥13-73-6॥
[अपहृत्य (apahṛtya) - having taken away; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; गाम् (gām) - cow; वै (vai) - indeed; ब्राह्मणाय (brāhmaṇāya) - to a Brāhmaṇa; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives, offers; यावत् (yāvat) - so long as; दाने (dāne) - in the act of gift; फलम् (phalam) - fruit, result; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of that (cow); तावन् (tāvan) - so much, as much; निरयम् (nirayam) - hell; ऋच्छति (ṛcchati) - attains;]
(But having taken away, he who indeed gives a cow to a Brāhmaṇa, as long as (he obtains) the fruit of the giving of that (cow), so long he attains hell.)
But whoever, having stolen a cow, gives it to a Brāhmaṇa, for as long as he enjoys the fruit of that gift, so long he goes to hell. (13-73-6)
सुवर्णं दक्षिणामाहुर्गोप्रदाने महाद्युते। सुवर्णं परमं ह्युक्तं दक्षिणार्थमसंशयम् ॥१३-७३-७॥
suvarṇaṃ dakṣiṇām āhur gopradāne mahādyute। suvarṇaṃ paramaṃ hy uktaṃ dakṣiṇārtham asaṃśayam ॥13-73-7॥
[सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - as the gift; as the offering; आहु: (āhuḥ) - they say; गो-प्रदाने (go-pradāne) - in the giving of a cow; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O highly radiant (one); सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; हि (hi) - indeed; उक्तम् (uktam) - it is said; दक्षिणार्थम् (dakṣiṇārtham) - for the purpose of gifting; for an offering; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(Gold as the gift they say in the giving of a cow, O highly radiant one. Gold, supreme indeed, is said for gifting purpose, without doubt.)
O highly radiant one, in the giving of a cow, they say gold is the (proper) gift. Indeed, gold is said to be the supreme offering for this purpose, without doubt. (13-73-7)
गोप्रदानं तारयते सप्त पूर्वांस्तथा परान्। सुवर्णं दक्षिणां दत्त्वा तावद्द्विगुणमुच्यते ॥१३-७३-८॥
gopradānaṁ tārayate sapta pūrvāṁs tathā parān। suvarṇaṁ dakṣiṇāṁ dattvā tāvad-dviguṇam ucyate ॥13-73-8॥
[गोप्रदानम् (gopradānam) - gift of a cow; तारयते (tārayate) - causes to cross over; सप्त (sapta) - seven; पूर्वान् (pūrvān) - ancestors (former ones); तथा (tathā) - likewise; परान् (parān) - descendants (later ones); सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - Dakṣiṇā (gift to priest); दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; तावत् (tāvat) - so much; द्विगुणम् (dviguṇam) - double; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said;]
(Gift of a cow causes to cross over seven ancestors and likewise descendants. Gold, Dakṣiṇā having given, so much double is said.)
The gift of a cow enables seven ancestors and seven descendants to cross over, and it is said that by giving gold as a Dakṣiṇā, the benefit is double that amount. (13-73-8)
सुवर्णं परमं दानं सुवर्णं दक्षिणा परा। सुवर्णं पावनं शक्र पावनानां परं स्मृतम् ॥१३-७३-९॥
suvarṇam paramaṃ dānaṃ suvarṇam dakṣiṇā parā। suvarṇam pāvanaṃ śakra pāvanānāṃ paraṃ smṛtam ॥13-73-9॥
[सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; दानम् (dānam) - gift; सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; दक्षिणा (dakṣiṇā) - offering; пरा (parā) - supreme; सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; पावनम् (pāvanam) - purifier; शक्र (śakra) - O Indra; पावनानाम् (pāvanānām) - of purifiers; परम् (param) - supreme; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is regarded;]
(Gold is the supreme gift, gold the supreme offering. Gold is the purifier, O Indra, and among purifiers, it is regarded as supreme.)
Gold is considered the highest gift and offering. O Indra, it is the supreme purifier among all purifiers. (13-73-9)
कुलानां पावनं प्राहुर्जातरूपं शतक्रतो। एषा मे दक्षिणा प्रोक्ता समासेन महाद्युते ॥१३-७३-१०॥
kulānāṃ pāvanaṃ prāhur jātarūpaṃ śatakrato। eṣā me dakṣiṇā proktā samāsena mahādyute ॥13-73-10॥
[कुलानां (kulānāṃ) - of families; पावनं (pāvanaṃ) - purifier; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - (they) declare; जातरूपं (jātarūpaṃ) - gold; शतक्रतो (śatakrato) - O Śatakratu (epithet of Indra); एषा (eṣā) - this; मे (me) - to me; दक्षिणा (dakṣiṇā) - sacrificial fee; प्रोक्ता (proktā) - is said; समासेन (samāsena) - in brief; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant one;]
(Of families purifier (is) declared gold, O Śatakratu. This to me sacrificial fee is said in brief, O greatly radiant one (13-73-10))
O Śatakratu, they declare gold to be the purifier of families. This, O greatly radiant one, is said by me in brief as the sacrificial fee. (13-73-10)
भीष्म उवाच॥

Bhishma said;
एतत्पितामहेनोक्तमिन्द्राय भरतर्षभ। इन्द्रो दशरथायाह रामायाह पिता तथा ॥१३-७३-११॥
etat pitāmahenoktam indrāya bharatarṣabha। indro daśarathāyāha rāmayāha pitā tathā ॥13-73-11॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; पितामहेन (pitāmahena) - by the grandfather; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; इन्द्राय (indrāya) - to Indra; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; दशरथाय आह (daśarathāya āha) - spoke to Daśaratha; रामाय आह (rāmāya āha) - spoke to Rāma; पिता तथा (pitā tathā) - father also;]
(This by the grandfather spoken to Indra, O best of the Bharatas. Indra spoke to Daśaratha, (and) also the father spoke to Rāma.)
O best of the Bharatas, this was spoken by the grandfather to Indra. Indra spoke to Daśaratha, and likewise the father to Rāma. (13-73-11)
राघवोऽपि प्रियभ्रात्रे लक्ष्मणाय यशस्विने। ऋषिभ्यो लक्ष्मणेनोक्तमरण्ये वसता विभो ॥१३-७३-१२॥
rāghavo'pi priyabhrātre lakṣmaṇāya yaśasvine। ṛṣibhyo lakṣmaṇenoktamaraṇye vasatā vibho ॥13-73-12॥
[राघवः (rāghavaḥ) - descendant of Raghu; Rama; अपि (api) - also; प्रियभ्रात्रे (priyabhrātre) - to the dear brother; लक्ष्मणाय (lakṣmaṇāya) - to Lakṣmaṇa; यशस्विने (yaśasvine) - to illustrious (one); ऋषिभ्यः (ṛṣibhyaḥ) - to the sages; लक्ष्मणेन (lakṣmaṇena) - by Lakṣmaṇa; उक्तम् (uktam) - said; अरण्ये (araṇye) - in the forest; वसता (vasatā) - while dwelling; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]
(Rāghava also to the dear brother, to Lakṣmaṇa, the illustrious one; to the sages, by Lakṣmaṇa, said in the forest while dwelling, O lord.)
Rāghava also spoke to his dear, illustrious brother Lakṣmaṇa what Lakṣmaṇa had said to the sages while dwelling in the forest, O lord. (13-73-12)
पारम्पर्यागतं चेदमृषयः संशितव्रताः। दुर्धरं धारयामासू राजानश्चैव धार्मिकाः ॥ उपाध्यायेन गदितं मम चेदं युधिष्ठिर ॥१३-७३-१३॥
pāramparyāgataṃ cedaṃ ṛṣayaḥ saṃśitavratāḥ। durdharaṃ dhārayāmāsu rājānaścaiva dhārmikāḥ॥ upādhyāyena gaditaṃ mama cedaṃ yudhiṣṭhira॥13-73-13॥
[पारम्पर्यागतं (pāramparyāgatam) - come by tradition; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; संशितव्रताः (saṃśitavratāḥ) - firm in vow; दुर्धरं (durdharam) - difficult to bear; धारयामासुः (dhārayāmāsuḥ) - bore; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; धार्मिकाः (dhārmikāḥ) - righteous; उपाध्यायेन (upādhyāyena) - by the preceptor; गदितं (gaditam) - spoken; मम (mama) - to me; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(This handed down by tradition, and this the sages firm in vow and kings indeed righteous bore, difficult to bear. This also spoken by the preceptor to me, Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Yudhiṣṭhira, this has been handed down by tradition—sages devoted to austere vows and righteous kings have upheld these difficult teachings; this too was explained to me by my preceptor. (13-73-13)
य इदं ब्राह्मणो नित्यं वदेद्ब्राह्मणसंसदि। यज्ञेषु गोप्रदानेषु द्वयोरपि समागमे ॥१३-७३-१४॥
ya idaṃ brāhmaṇo nityaṃ vaded brāhmaṇasaṃsadi। yajñeṣu gopradāneṣu dvayor api samāgame ॥13-73-14॥
[य (ya) - who; इदं (idaṃ) - this; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; वदेत् (vadet) - should say; ब्राह्मणसंसदि (brāhmaṇasaṃsadi) - in the assembly of Brāhmaṇas; यज्ञेषु (yajñeṣu) - in sacrifices; गोप्रदानेषु (gopradāneṣu) - in the giving of cows; द्वयोः (dvayoḥ) - of both; अपि (api) - also; समागमे (samāgame) - on the occasion of assembly;]
(Who this Brāhmaṇa always should say in the assembly of Brāhmaṇas, in sacrifices, in the giving of cows, and also on the occasion of the coming together of both.)
A Brāhmaṇa should always recite this in the assembly of Brāhmaṇas, during sacrifices, in the giving of cows, and whenever both come together. (13-73-14)
तस्य लोकाः किलाक्षय्या दैवतैः सह नित्यदा। इति ब्रह्मा स भगवानुवाच परमेश्वरः ॥१३-७३-१५॥
tasya lokāḥ kilākṣayyā daivataiḥ saha nityadā. iti brahmā sa bhagavān uvāca parameśvaraḥ ॥13-73-15॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; किल (kila) - indeed; अक्षय्याः (akṣayyāḥ) - imperishable; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - with the deities; सह (saha) - together; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; उवाच (uvāca) - said; परमेश्वरः (parameśvaraḥ) - the Supreme Lord;]
(Of him, the worlds indeed (are) imperishable with the deities together, always. Thus Brahmā, he, the venerable one, said, (the) Supreme Lord (said).)
Brahmā, the venerable Supreme Lord, said: "Indeed, his worlds are always imperishable together with the deities." (13-73-15)
