विस्रम्भितोऽहं भवता धर्मान्प्रवदता विभो। प्रवक्ष्यामि तु संदेहं तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१३-७४-१॥
visrambhito'ham bhavatā dharmān pravadatā vibho। pravakṣyāmi tu saṃdehaṃ tan me brūhi pitāmaha॥13-74-1॥
[विस्रम्भितः (visrambhitaḥ) - become confident; अहम् (aham) - I; भवतா (bhavatā) - by you; धर्मान् (dharmān) - dharmas; duties; प्रवदता (pravadatā) - speaking; explaining; विभो (vibho) - O lord; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall state; तु (tu) - but; सन्देहं (saṃdeham) - doubt; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandfather;]
(Confident I, by you speaking the dharmas, O lord, I shall state but a doubt; that to me tell, O grandfather.)
O lord, having become confident by your explaining the dharmas, I will state a doubt; please tell me that, O grandfather. (13-74-1)
व्रतानां किं फलं प्रोक्तं कीदृशं वा महाद्युते। नियमानां फलं किं च स्वधीतस्य च किं फलम् ॥१३-७४-२॥
vratānāṃ kiṃ phalaṃ proktaṃ kīdr̥śaṃ vā mahādyute। niyamānāṃ phalaṃ kiṃ ca svadhītasya ca kiṃ phalam॥13-74-2॥

(Of vows what fruit is said, of what kind or, O greatly radiant one? Of restraints fruit what and of self-study and what fruit? (13-74-2))
O greatly radiant one, what is said to be the fruit of vows, and of what kind is it? And what is the fruit of restraints, and what is the fruit of self-study? (13-74-2)
दमस्येह फलं किं च वेदानां धारणे च किम्। अध्यापने फलं किं च सर्वमिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥१३-७४-३॥
damasyeha phalaṃ kiṃ ca vedānāṃ dhāraṇe ca kim। adhyāpane phalaṃ kiṃ ca sarvam icchāmi veditum॥13-74-3॥
[दमस्य (damasya) - of self-restraint; इह (iha) - here; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; किं (kiṃ) - what; च (ca) - and; वेदानां (vedānāṃ) - of the Vedas; धारणे (dhāraṇe) - in retention; च (ca) - and; किम् (kim) - what; अध्यापने (adhyāpane) - in teaching; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; किं (kiṃ) - what; च (ca) - and; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; वेदितुम् (veditum) - to know;]
(Of self-restraint here fruit what and of the Vedas in retention and what; in teaching fruit what and all I wish to know.)
I wish to know all: what is the fruit of self-restraint here, what is the fruit of the retention of the Vedas, and what is the fruit of teaching. (13-74-3)
अप्रतिग्राहके किं च फलं लोके पितामह। तस्य किं च फलं दृष्टं श्रुतं यः सम्प्रयच्छति ॥१३-७४-४॥
apratigrahake kiṃ ca phalaṃ loke pitāmaha। tasya kiṃ ca phalaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ śrutaṃ yaḥ samprayacchati॥13-74-4॥
[अप्रतिग्राहके (apratigrahake) - in one who does not accept gifts; किं (kiṃ) - what; च (ca) - and; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; लोके (loke) - in the world; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire; तस्य (tasya) - his; किं (kiṃ) - what; च (ca) - and; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - seen; श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard; यः (yaḥ) - who; सम्प्रयच्छति (samprayacchati) - gives; ॥१३-७४-४॥ (॥13-74-4॥) - ;]
(In one who does not accept gifts, what and fruit in the world, O grandsire? His what and fruit seen, heard, who gives?)
O grandsire, in the case of one who does not accept gifts, what fruit (result) is there in this world? And what fruit is seen or heard for the one who gives to such a person? (13-74-4)
स्वकर्मनिरतानां च शूराणां चापि किं फलम्। सत्ये च किं फलं प्रोक्तं ब्रह्मचर्ये च किं फलम् ॥१३-७४-५॥
svakarmaniratānāṃ ca śūrāṇāṃ cāpi kiṃ phalam। satye ca kiṃ phalaṃ proktaṃ brahmacarye ca kiṃ phalam॥13-74-5॥

(Of those devoted to their own duties and of heroes also, what is the fruit? In truth and in celibacy, what fruit is said?)
What is the fruit of those devoted to their own duties and of heroes? What fruit is said to result from truth and from celibacy? (13-74-5)
पितृशुश्रूषणे किं च मातृशुश्रूषणे तथा। आचार्यगुरुशुश्रूषास्वनुक्रोशानुकम्पने ॥१३-७४-६॥
pitṛśuśrūṣaṇe kiṁ ca mātṛśuśrūṣaṇe tathā। ācāryaguruśuśrūṣāsvanukrośānukampane ॥13-74-6॥
[पितृशुश्रूषणे (pitṛ-śuśrūṣaṇe) - in service to father; किं (kiṁ) - what; च (ca) - and; मातृशुश्रूषणे (mātṛ-śuśrūṣaṇe) - in service to mother; तथा (tathā) - likewise; आचार्यगुरुशुश्रूषासु (ācārya-guru-śuśrūṣāsu) - in the services to teacher and preceptor; अनुक्रोश (anukrośa) - compassion; अनुकम्पने (anukampane) - in pity;]
(In service to father, what and in service to mother likewise, in the services to teacher and preceptor, in compassion, in pity.)
What (is) in service to father, likewise also in service to mother, in service to teachers and preceptors, in compassion, in pity. (13-74-6)
एतत्सर्वमशेषेण पितामह यथातथम्। वेत्तुमिच्छामि धर्मज्ञ परं कौतूहलं हि मे ॥१३-७४-७॥
etatsarvamaśeṣeṇa pitāmaha yathātatham। vettumicchāmi dharmajña paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi me ॥13-74-7॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अशेषेण (aśeṣeṇa) - without remainder; पितामह (pitāmaha) - grandfather; यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - so; वेतुम् (vettum) - to know; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; परम् (param) - great; कौतूहलम् (kautūhalam) - curiosity; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me;]
(This all without remainder, grandfather, as (it is) so, to know I desire, knower of dharma, great curiosity indeed to me.)
Grandfather, I wish to know all this completely, just as it is. Knower of dharma, for I indeed have great curiosity. (13-74-7)
भीष्म उवाच॥

Bhīṣma said.
यो व्रतं वै यथोद्दिष्टं तथा सम्प्रतिपद्यते। अखण्डं सम्यगारब्धं तस्य लोकाः सनातनाः ॥१३-७४-८॥
yo vrataṃ vai yathoddiṣṭaṃ tathā sampratipadyate। akhaṇḍaṃ samyagārabdhaṃ tasya lokāḥ sanātanāḥ॥13-74-8॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; व्रतं (vrataṃ) - vow; वै (vai) - indeed; यथोद्दिष्टं (yathoddiṣṭaṃ) - as has been prescribed; तथा (tathā) - thus; सम्प्रतिपद्यते (sampratipadyate) - undertakes; अखण्डं (akhaṇḍaṃ) - unbroken; सम्यग् (samyak) - properly; आरब्धं (ārabdhaṃ) - commenced; तस्य (tasya) - his; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; सनातनाः (sanātanāḥ) - eternal;]
(Who vow indeed as has been prescribed thus undertakes; unbroken properly commenced, his worlds eternal.)
Whoever undertakes this vow exactly as prescribed, in an unbroken and proper manner, attains eternal worlds. (13-74-8)
नियमानां फलं राजन्प्रत्यक्षमिह दृश्यते। नियमानां क्रतूनां च त्वयावाप्तमिदं फलम् ॥१३-७४-९॥
niyamānāṃ phalaṃ rājan pratyakṣam iha dṛśyate। niyamānāṃ kratūnāṃ ca tvayā āptam idaṃ phalam॥13-74-9॥
[नियमानाम् (niyamānām) - of observances; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रत्यक्षम् (pratyakṣam) - visible; इह (iha) - here; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; नियमानाम् (niyamānām) - of observances; क्रतूनाम् (kratūnām) - of sacrifices; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; आप्तम् (āptam) - obtained; इदं (idaṃ) - this; फलम् (phalam) - fruit;]
(Of observances fruit O king visible here is seen. Of observances of sacrifices and by you obtained this fruit.)
O king, the fruit of observances is visibly seen here. And this fruit of observances and sacrifices has been obtained by you. (13-74-9)
स्वधीतस्यापि च फलं दृश्यतेऽमुत्र चेह च। इहलोकेऽर्थवान्नित्यं ब्रह्मलोके च मोदते ॥१३-७४-१०॥
svadhītasya api ca phalaṁ dṛśyate amutra ca iha ca | iha-loke arthavān nityaṁ brahma-loke ca modate ॥13-74-10॥
[स्वधीतस्य (svadhītasya) - of one who has well-studied (the Veda); अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; फलं (phalaṁ) - fruit; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; अमुत्र (amutra) - there (in the other world); च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; इहलोके (iha-loke) - in this world; अर्थवान् (arthavān) - possessed of wealth; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; ब्रह्मलोके (brahma-loke) - in Brahmaloka; च (ca) - and; मोदते (modate) - rejoices;]
(The fruit of one who has well-studied is also seen there and here and in this world one is always possessed of wealth, and rejoices in Brahmaloka.)
The results of diligent study appear both in this world and the next; here, one is always prosperous, and in Brahmaloka, one delights. (13-74-10)
दमस्य तु फलं राजञ्शृणु त्वं विस्तरेण मे। दान्ताः सर्वत्र सुखिनो दान्ताः सर्वत्र निर्वृताः ॥१३-७४-११॥
damasya tu phalaṁ rājañśṛṇu tvaṁ vistareṇa me। dāntāḥ sarvatra sukhino dāntāḥ sarvatra nirvṛtāḥ ॥13-74-11॥
[दमस्य (damasya) - of self-restraint; तु (tu) - but; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; त्वम् (tvam) - you; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; मे (me) - from me; दान्ताः (dāntāḥ) - the self-restrained; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; सुखिनः (sukhinaḥ) - happy; दान्ताः (dāntāḥ) - the self-restrained; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; निर्वृताः (nirvṛtāḥ) - contented; १३-७४-११ (13-74-11) - (13-74-11);]
(But the fruit of self-restraint, O king, hear you in detail from me. The self-restrained are everywhere happy, the self-restrained are everywhere contented. (13-74-11))
But, O king, listen from me in detail to the fruit of self-restraint: the self-restrained are happy everywhere, the self-restrained are content everywhere. (13-74-11)
यत्रेच्छागामिनो दान्ताः सर्वशत्रुनिषूदनाः। प्रार्थयन्ति च यद्दान्ता लभन्ते तन्न संशयः ॥१३-७४-१२॥
yatrecchāgāmino dāntāḥ sarvaśatruniṣūdanāḥ। prārthayanti ca yaddāntā labhante tanna saṁśayaḥ॥13-74-12॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; इच्छा-गामिनः (icchā-gāminaḥ) - desiring; दान्ताः (dāntāḥ) - self-controlled; सर्व-शत्रु-निषूदनाः (sarva-śatru-niṣūdanāḥ) - destroyers of all enemies; प्रार्थयन्ति (prārthayanti) - they pray; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - that which; दान्ताः (dāntāḥ) - the self-controlled; लभन्ते (labhante) - they obtain; तत् (tat) - that; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Where desiring, self-controlled, destroyers of all enemies, they pray, and that which the self-controlled obtain, that is no doubt.)
Where self-controlled persons, who are destroyers of all enemies and act according to their desires, pray, whatever those self-controlled attain, that is surely without doubt. (13-74-12)
युज्यन्ते सर्वकामैर्हि दान्ताः सर्वत्र पाण्डव। स्वर्गे तथा प्रमोदन्ते तपसा विक्रमेण च ॥१३-७४-१३॥
yujyante sarvakāmair hi dāntāḥ sarvatra pāṇḍava। svarge tathā pramodante tapasā vikrameṇa ca ॥13-74-13॥
[युज्यन्ते (yujyante) - are joined; are associated with; सर्वकामैः (sarvakāmaiḥ) - with all desires; हि (hi) - indeed; दान्ताः (dāntāḥ) - the controlled (ones); those who have subdued (their senses); सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O son of Pāṇḍu; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; तथा (tathā) - also; likewise; प्रमोदन्ते (pramodante) - rejoice; delight; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; विक्रमेण (vikrameṇa) - by courage; by heroic effort; च (ca) - and;]
(Indeed, the controlled (ones) are joined with all desires everywhere, O son of Pāṇḍu. In heaven also they rejoice by austerity and by heroic effort.)
O son of Pandu, those who are self-controlled indeed obtain all desired objects everywhere. Likewise, in heaven they rejoice through austerity and heroic effort. (13-74-13)
दानैर्यज्ञैश्च विविधैर्यथा दान्ताः क्षमान्विताः। दाता कुप्यति नो दान्तस्तस्माद्दानात्परो दमः ॥१३-७४-१४॥
dānair yajñaiś ca vividhair yathā dāntāḥ kṣamānvitāḥ। dātā kupyati no dāntas tasmād dānāt paro damaḥ॥ 13-74-14॥
[दानैः (dānaiḥ) - by gifts; by acts of giving; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - by various (acts); यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; दान्ताः (dāntāḥ) - self-restrained ones; क्षमा-अन्विताः (kṣamā-anvitāḥ) - endowed with forbearance; दाता (dātā) - the giver; कुप्यति (kupyati) - becomes angry; नु (no) - not; दान्तः (dāntaḥ) - (the) self-restrained one; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; दानात् (dānāt) - than giving; than gift; परः (paraḥ) - superior; higher; दमः (damaḥ) - self-restraint;]
(By gifts, by sacrifices, and by various (acts), as (people become) self-restrained, endowed with forbearance; the giver becomes angry, not the self-restrained. Therefore, than giving, self-restraint is superior.)
Those who become self-restrained and endowed with forbearance by various gifts and sacrifices, yet the giver may still become angry, but the self-restrained does not. Therefore, self-restraint is superior to giving. (13-74-14)
यस्तु दद्यादकुप्यन्हि तस्य लोकाः सनातनाः। क्रोधो हन्ति हि यद्दानं तस्माद्दानात्परो दमः ॥१३-७४-१५॥
yastu dadyād akupyān hi tasya lokāḥ sanātanāḥ। krodho hanti hi yad dānaṃ tasmād dānāt paro damaḥ ॥13-74-15॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; अकुप्यन् (akupyān) - not becoming angry; हि (hi) - verily; तस्य (tasya) - his; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; सनातनाः (sanātanāḥ) - eternal; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; हन्ति (hanti) - destroys; हि (hi) - indeed; यत् (yat) - which; दानम् (dānam) - gift; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; दानात् (dānāt) - than giving; परः (paraḥ) - higher; दमः (damaḥ) - self-control;]
(Who but should give not becoming angry, verily his worlds are eternal. Anger destroys indeed which gift; therefore than giving, higher is self-control. (13-74-15))
But he who gives without anger—his worlds are eternal. Anger indeed destroys the merit of gifts; therefore, self-control is superior to giving. (13-74-15)
अदृश्यानि महाराज स्थानान्ययुतशो दिवि। ऋषीणां सर्वलोकेषु यानीतो यान्ति देवताः ॥१३-७४-१६॥
adṛśyāni mahārāja sthānānyayutaśo divi। ṛṣīṇāṃ sarvalokeṣu yāni ito yānti devatāḥ॥13-74-16॥
[अदृश्यानि (adṛśyāni) - invisible; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; स्थानानि (sthānāni) - places; अयुतशः (ayutaśaḥ) - by tens of thousands; दिवि (divi) - in the sky; ऋषीणां (ṛṣīṇām) - of the seers; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; यानि (yāni) - which; इतो (itaḥ) - from here; यान्ति (yānti) - go; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the gods;]
(Invisible, O great king, places by tens of thousands in the sky, of the seers in all worlds, which from here go, the gods.)
O great king, there are unseen places by tens of thousands in the sky—those to which the gods depart from here in all the worlds of the seers. (13-74-16)
दमेन यानि नृपते गच्छन्ति परमर्षयः। कामयाना महत्स्थानं तस्माद्दानात्परो दमः ॥१३-७४-१७॥
damena yāni nṛpate gacchanti paramarṣayaḥ| kāmayānā mahatsthānaṃ tasmāddānāt paro damaḥ ॥13-74-17॥
[दमेन (damena) - by self-restraint; यानि (yāni) - which; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go (to); परमर्षयः (paramarṣayaḥ) - the supreme sages; कामयाना (kāmayānā) - desiring; महत्स्थानं (mahatsthānaṃ) - great place (great state); तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; दानात् (dānāt) - than gift; परः (paraḥ) - greater; दमः (damaḥ) - self-restraint;]
(By self-restraint, which, O king, the supreme sages go (to), desiring the great place; therefore, than gift, greater is self-restraint.)
O king, by self-restraint, the supreme sages attain that great state which they desire; therefore, self-restraint is greater than charity. (13-74-17)
अध्यापकः परिक्लेशादक्षयं फलमश्नुते। विधिवत्पावकं हुत्वा ब्रह्मलोके नराधिप ॥१३-७४-१८॥
adhyāpakaḥ parikleśādakṣayaṃ phalamaśnute। vidhivatpāvakaṃ hutvā brahmaloke narādhipa ॥13-74-18॥
[अध्यापकः (adhyāpakaḥ) - teacher; परिक्लेशात् (parikleśāt) - from effort; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अश्नुते (aśnute) - obtains; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - in the proper manner; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire; हुत्वा (hutvā) - having offered; ब्रह्मलोके (brahmaloke) - in the world of Brahma; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(Teacher from effort imperishable fruit obtains. In the proper manner fire having offered in the world of Brahma O king.)
The teacher obtains imperishable fruit from effort. Having properly offered fire, he, O king, attains the world of Brahma. (13-74-18)
अधीत्यापि हि यो वेदान्न्यायविद्भ्यः प्रयच्छति। गुरुकर्मप्रशंसी च सोऽपि स्वर्गे महीयते ॥१३-७४-१९॥
adhītyāpi hi yo vedān nyāyavidbhyaḥ prayacchati। gurukarmapraśaṁsī ca so'pi svarge mahīyate ॥13-74-19॥
[अधीत्य (adhītya) - having studied; अपि (api) - even; हि (hi) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; वेदान् (vedān) - the Vedas; न्यायविद्भ्यः (nyāyavidbhyaḥ) - to those who know the law; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - gives; गुरुकर्मप्रशंसी (gurukarmapraśaṁsī) - one who praises the acts of the teacher; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Having studied, even indeed who the Vedas to those who know the law gives, one who praises the acts of the teacher and he also in heaven is honored.)
Even one who, having studied, gives the Vedas to those versed in the law, and who praises the acts of the teacher, he too is honored in heaven. (13-74-19)
क्षत्रियोऽध्ययने युक्तो यजने दानकर्मणि। युद्धे यश्च परित्राता सोऽपि स्वर्गे महीयते ॥१३-७४-२०॥
kṣatriyo'dhyayane yukto yajane dānakarmaṇi। yuddhe yaś ca paritrātā so'pi svarge mahīyate ॥13-74-20॥
[क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a Kṣatriya; अध्ययने (adhyayane) - in study; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; यजने (yajane) - in sacrifice; दानकर्मणि (dānakarmaṇi) - in the act of giving; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; परित्राता (paritrātā) - protector; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(A Kṣatriya engaged in study, in sacrifice, in the act of giving, and who is a protector in battle, he also is honored in heaven.)
A Kṣatriya who is devoted to study, sacrifice, charity, and acts as a protector in battle is also honored in heaven. (13-74-20)
वैश्यः स्वकर्मनिरतः प्रदानाल्लभते महत्। शूद्रः स्वकर्मनिरतः स्वर्गं शुश्रूषयार्च्छति ॥१३-७४-२१॥
vaiśyaḥ svakarmanirataḥ pradānāllabhate mahat। śūdraḥ svakarmanirataḥ svargaṃ śuśrūṣayārcchati ॥13-74-21॥

(Vaiśya devoted to his own duty by giving obtains great. Śūdra devoted to his own duty attains heaven by service.)
The Vaiśya, devoted to his own duty, obtains great (reward) through giving. The Śūdra, devoted to his own duty, attains heaven through service. (13-74-21)
शूरा बहुविधाः प्रोक्तास्तेषामर्थांश्च मे शृणु। शूरान्वयानां निर्दिष्टं फलं शूरस्य चैव ह ॥१३-७४-२२॥
śūrā bahuvidhāḥ proktās teṣām arthāṃś ca me śṛṇu। śūrān vayānāṃ nirdiṣṭaṃ phalaṃ śūrasya caiva ha ॥13-74-22॥
[शूरा (śūrāḥ) - heroes; बहुविधाः (bahuvidhāḥ) - of many kinds; प्रोक्ताः (proktāḥ) - are said; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अर्थान् (arthān) - meanings; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; शूरान् (śūrān) - heroes; वयानाम् (vayānām) - of kinds; निर्दिष्टम् (nirdiṣṭam) - prescribed; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; शूरस्य (śūrasya) - of the hero; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - verily;]
(Heroes of many kinds are said; and the meanings of them hear from me. Of the kinds of heroes, the prescribed fruit (result) and also of the hero indeed, verily.)
Heroes are of many kinds as said; hear from me their meanings. The prescribed result for the kinds of heroes and also for the hero himself. (13-74-22)
यज्ञशूरा दमे शूराः सत्यशूरास्तथापरे। युद्धशूरास्तथैवोक्ता दानशूराश्च मानवाः ॥१३-७४-२३॥
yajñaśūrā dame śūrāḥ satyaśūrās tathāpare | yuddhaśūrās tathaiva uktā dānaśūrāś ca mānavāḥ ॥13-74-23॥
[यज्ञशूराः (yajñaśūrāḥ) - heroes in sacrifice; दमे (dame) - in self-control; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; सत्यशूराः (satyaśūrāḥ) - heroes in truth; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अपरे (apare) - others; युद्धशूराः (yuddhaśūrāḥ) - heroes in battle; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; उक्ता (uktā) - are declared; दानशूराः (dānaśūrāḥ) - heroes in giving; च (ca) - and; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - men;]
(Heroes in sacrifice, in self-control heroes, heroes in truth, likewise others; heroes in battle, in the same way are declared, heroes in giving and men.)
There are men who are heroes in sacrifice, heroes in self-control, heroes in truth, and others; in the same way, men are said to be heroes in battle and heroes in generosity. (13-74-23)
बुद्धिशूरास्तथैवान्ये क्षमाशूरास्तथापरे। आर्जवे च तथा शूराः शमे वर्तन्ति मानवाः ॥१३-७४-२४॥
buddhiśūrās tathai vānye kṣamāśūrās tathāpare। ārjave ca tathā śūrāḥ śame vartanti mānavāḥ॥13-74-24॥
[बुद्धिशूराः (buddhiśūrāḥ) - those who are brave in intellect; तथा (tathā) - likewise; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्ये (anye) - others; क्षमाशूराः (kṣamāśūrāḥ) - those who are brave in forbearance; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अपरे (apare) - others; आर्जवे (ārjave) - in straightforwardness; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - brave ones; शमे (śame) - in tranquility; वर्तन्ति (vartanti) - abide; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - humans;]
(Those who are brave in intellect, likewise, indeed, others; those who are brave in forbearance, likewise, other (others); in straightforwardness and likewise brave ones, in tranquility abide, humans.)
Some humans are brave in intellect, others are brave in forbearance; still others are brave in straightforwardness; and there are brave ones who abide in tranquility. (13-74-24)
तैस्तैस्तु नियमैः शूरा बहवः सन्ति चापरे। वेदाध्ययनशूराश्च शूराश्चाध्यापने रताः ॥१३-७४-२५॥
taistais tu niyamaiḥ śūrā bahavaḥ santi cāpare। vedādhyayanaśūrāś ca śūrāś cādhyāpane ratāḥ॥13-74-25॥
[तैस्तैः (taistaiḥ) - by those various (different); तु (tu) - but; नियमैः (niyamaiḥ) - by rules; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; सन्ति (santi) - are; exist; च (ca) - and; अपरे (apare) - others; different ones; वेदाध्ययनशूराः (vedādhyayanaśūrāḥ) - heroes in the study of the Vedas; च (ca) - and; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; च (ca) - and; अध्यापने (adhyāpane) - in teaching; रताः (ratāḥ) - engaged; devoted;]
(But by those various rules heroes, many are, and others; heroes in the study of the Vedas and heroes devoted to teaching.)

गुरुशुश्रूषया शूराः पितृशुश्रूषयापरे। मातृशुश्रूषया शूरा भैक्ष्यशूरास्तथापरे ॥१३-७४-२६॥
guruśuśrūṣayā śūrāḥ pitṛśuśrūṣayāpare। mātṛśuśrūṣayā śūrā bhaikṣyaśūrās tathāpare ॥13-74-26॥
[गुरुशुश्रूषया (guruśuśrūṣayā) - by service of the teacher; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; पितृशुश्रूषया (pitṛśuśrūṣayā) - by service of the father; अपरे (apare) - others; मातृशुश्रूषया (mātṛśuśrūṣayā) - by service of the mother; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; भैक्ष्यशूराः (bhaikṣyaśūrāḥ) - heroes in begging (for alms); तथा (tathā) - likewise; अपरे (apare) - others;]

Some are heroes by serving the teacher, others by serving the father; some are heroes by serving the mother, and others likewise are heroes in accepting alms. (13-74-26)
साङ्ख्यशूराश्च बहवो योगशूरास्तथापरे। अरण्ये गृहवासे च शूराश्चातिथिपूजने ॥ सर्वे यान्ति पराँल्लोकान्स्वकर्मफलनिर्जितान् ॥१३-७४-२७॥

(Heroes in Sāṅkhya and many, heroes in Yoga likewise others, in forest, in household life and heroes and in the worship of guests. All go to supreme worlds won by the fruit of their own actions. (13-74-27))
Many are heroes in Sāṅkhya, and also others are heroes in Yoga; others are heroes residing in the forest or in the home, and some are heroes in honoring guests. All of them go to the highest worlds attained by the fruit of their own actions. (13-74-27)
धारणं सर्ववेदानां सर्वतीर्थावगाहनम्। सत्यं च ब्रुवतो नित्यं समं वा स्यान्न वा समम् ॥१३-७४-२८॥
dhāraṇaṃ sarvavedānāṃ sarvatīrthāvgāhanam। satyaṃ ca bruvato nityaṃ samaṃ vā syān na vā samam ॥13-74-28॥
[धारणम् (dhāraṇam) - bearing; upholding; सर्ववेदानाम् (sarvavedānām) - of all the Vedas; सर्वतीर्थावगाहनम् (sarvatīrthāvagāhanam) - bathing in all holy places; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; च (ca) - and; ब्रुवतः (bruvataḥ) - of one speaking; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; समं (samaṃ) - equal; वा (vā) - or; स्यात् (syāt) - it may be; न (na) - not; वा (vā) - or; समम् (samam) - equal;]
(Bearing of all the Vedas, bathing in all holy places, truth and of one speaking always equal or it may be not or equal.)

अश्वमेधसहस्रं च सत्यं च तुलया धृतम्। अश्वमेधसहस्राद्धि सत्यमेव विशिष्यते ॥१३-७४-२९॥
aśvamedhasahasraṃ ca satyaṃ ca tulayā dhṛtam। aśvamedhasahasrāddhi satyameva viśiṣyate ॥13-74-29॥
[अश्वमेधसहस्रं (aśvamedhasahasram) - thousand horse sacrifices; च (ca) - and; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; च (ca) - and; तुलया (tulayā) - with a balance; धृतम् (dhṛtam) - weighed; अश्वमेधसहस्रात् (aśvamedhasahasrāt) - than a thousand horse sacrifices; हि (hi) - indeed; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; एव (eva) - certainly; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - excels;]
(A thousand horse sacrifices and truth, when weighed in a balance; than a thousand horse sacrifices, indeed, truth alone excels.)
When a thousand horse sacrifices and truth are weighed in a balance, truth alone excels even a thousand horse sacrifices. (13-74-29)
सत्येन सूर्यस्तपति सत्येनाग्निः प्रदीप्यते। सत्येन मारुतो वाति सर्वं सत्ये प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥१३-७४-३०॥
satyena sūryaḥ tapati satyenāgniḥ pradīpyate। satyena māruto vāti sarvaṃ satye pratiṣṭhitam ॥13-74-30॥

(By truth the sun shines, by truth the fire is kindled, by truth the wind blows; all is established in truth.)

सत्येन देवान्प्रीणाति पितॄन्वै ब्राह्मणांस्तथा। सत्यमाहुः परं धर्मं तस्मात्सत्यं न लङ्घयेत् ॥१३-७४-३१॥
satyena devān prīṇāti pitṝn vai brāhmaṇāṃs tathā। satyam āhuḥ paraṃ dharmaṃ tasmāt satyaṃ na laṅghayet ॥13-74-31॥
[सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; by means of truth; देवान् (devān) - the gods; प्रीणाति (prīṇāti) - pleases; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - the ancestors; वै (vai) - indeed; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brāhmaṇas; तथा (tathā) - likewise; सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they declare; परम् (param) - supreme; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - duty; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; न (na) - not; लङ्घयेत् (laṅghayet) - should transgress;]
(By truth, one pleases the gods, the ancestors indeed, and likewise the Brāhmaṇas. Truth they declare to be the supreme duty; therefore, truth should not be transgressed. (13-74-31))

munayaḥ satyaniratā munayaḥ satyavikramāḥ। munayaḥ satyaśapathās tasmāt satyaṃ viśiṣyate ॥ satyavantaḥ svargaloke modante bharatarṣabha ॥13-74-32॥
[मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; सत्यनिरता (satyaniratā) - devoted to truth; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; सत्यविक्रमाः (satyavikramāḥ) - whose power is truth; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; सत्यशपथाः (satyaśapathāḥ) - those who swear by truth; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is distinguished; सत्यवन्तः (satyavantaḥ) - men of truth; स्वर्गलोके (svargaloke) - in the heavenly world; मोदन्ते (modante) - rejoice; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas;]
(Sages devoted to truth, sages whose strength is truth, sages who swear by truth; therefore, truth is distinguished. Men of truth rejoice in the heavenly world, bull among the Bharatas (13-74-32))
Sages devoted to truth, sages whose power is truth, and those who take truth as their vow—for this reason, truth is supreme. Men of truth rejoice in the heavenly realm, O foremost of the Bharatas. (13-74-32)
दमः सत्यफलावाप्तिरुक्ता सर्वात्मना मया। असंशयं विनीतात्मा सर्वः स्वर्गे महीयते ॥१३-७४-३३॥
damaḥ satya-phalāvāptiruktā sarvātmanā mayā। asaṁśayaṁ vinītātmā sarvaḥ svarge mahīyate॥13-74-33॥
[दमः (damaḥ) - self-restraint; सत्यफलावाप्तिः (satya-phalāvāptiḥ) - attainment of the fruit of truth; उक्ता (uktā) - has been declared; सर्वात्मना (sarvātmanā) - in every manner; मया (mayā) - by me; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt; विनीतात्मा (vinītātmā) - humble-minded; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - everyone; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Self-restraint, attainment of the fruit of truth, has been declared in every manner by me; without doubt, humble-minded everyone in heaven is honored.)
I have declared by all means that self-restraint and the attainment of the fruit of truth are important; without doubt, every humble-minded person is honored in heaven. (13-74-33)
ब्रह्मचर्यस्य तु गुणाञ्शृणु मे वसुधाधिप। आ जन्ममरणाद्यस्तु ब्रह्मचारी भवेदिह ॥ न तस्य किञ्चिदप्राप्यमिति विद्धि जनाधिप ॥१३-७४-३४॥
brahmacaryasya tu guṇāñ śṛṇu me vasudhādhipa। ā janma-maraṇāt yaḥ tu brahmacārī bhavet iha ॥ na tasya kiñcid aprāpyam iti viddhi janādhipa ॥13-74-34॥
[ब्रह्मचर्यस्य (brahmacaryasya) - of celibacy; तु (tu) - but; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; मे (me) - from me; वसुधाधिप (vasudhādhipa) - O lord of the earth; आ (ā) - up to; जन्ममरणात् (janma-maraṇāt) - from birth and death; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - indeed; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - practitioner of celibacy; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; इह (iha) - here; न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - for him; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अप्राप्यम् (aprāpyam) - unattainable; इति (iti) - thus; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O lord of people;]
(But the qualities of celibacy hear from me, O lord of the earth. From birth and death, who indeed may be a celibate here, for him nothing is unattainable—thus know, O lord of people.)
O lord of the earth, hear from me the qualities of celibacy. Whoever practices celibacy here from birth to death, know, O lord of people, that for him nothing is unattainable. (13-74-34)
बह्व्यः कोट्यस्त्वृषीणां तु ब्रह्मलोके वसन्त्युत। सत्ये रतानां सततं दान्तानामूर्ध्वरेतसाम् ॥१३-७४-३५॥
bahvyaḥ koṭyastu vṛṣīṇāṃ tu brahmaloke vasantyuta। satye ratānāṃ satataṃ dāntānām ūrdhvaretasām ॥13-74-35॥
[बह्व्यः (bahvyaḥ) - many; कोट्यः (koṭyaḥ) - crores (ten millions); वृषीणां (vṛṣīṇāṃ) - of ṛṣis (sages); तु (tu) - but; ब्रह्मलोके (brahmaloke) - in the world of Brahmā; वसन्ति (vasanti) - dwell; उत (uta) - indeed; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; रतानां (ratānāṃ) - of those who are devoted; सततं (satataṃ) - always; दान्तानाम् (dāntānām) - of those who are self-controlled; ऊर्ध्वरेतसाम् (ūrdhvaretasām) - of those whose vital energy is upward ( ॥१३-७४-३५॥ (13-74-35) - ;]
(Many crores of ṛṣis but in the world of Brahmā indeed dwell, of those who are devoted to truth, always of those self-controlled, of those whose vital energy is upward.)
Many crores of ṛṣis indeed dwell in Brahmaloka—those ever devoted to truth, self-controlled, and with their vital energy directed upward. (13-74-35)
ब्रह्मचर्यं दहेद्राजन्सर्वपापान्युपासितम्। ब्राह्मणेन विशेषेण ब्राह्मणो ह्यग्निरुच्यते ॥१३-७४-३६॥
brahmacaryaṃ dahed rājan sarvapāpāny upāsitam. brāhmaṇena viśeṣeṇa brāhmaṇo hy agnir ucyate ॥13-74-36॥
[ब्रह्मचर्यं (brahmacaryam) - celibacy; (the state of pursuing brahman;) दहेत् (dahed) - should burn; (should destroy;) राजन् (rājan) - O king; सर्वपापानि (sarvapāpāni) - all sins; उपासितम् (upāsitam) - those which have been attended (performed); ब्राह्मणेन (brāhmaṇena) - by a brāhmaṇa; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; हि (hi) - indeed; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said;]
(Brahmacarya should burn, O king, all sins that have been committed; by a brāhmaṇa especially, the brāhmaṇa indeed is said to be fire.)
O king, brahmacarya should burn all sins that have been committed; especially by the brāhmaṇa, for the brāhmaṇa is indeed said to be fire. (13-74-36)
प्रत्यक्षं च तवाप्येतद्ब्राह्मणेषु तपस्विषु। बिभेति हि यथा शक्रो ब्रह्मचारिप्रधर्षितः ॥ तद्ब्रह्मचर्यस्य फलमृषीणामिह दृश्यते ॥१३-७४-३७॥
pratyakṣaṃ ca tavāpy etad brāhmaṇeṣu tapasviṣu। bibheti hi yathā śakro brahmacāri-pradharṣitaḥ ॥ tad brahmacaryasya phalam ṛṣīṇām iha dṛśyate ॥13-74-37॥
[प्रत्यक्षम् (pratyakṣam) - directly; evidently; च (ca) - and; तवापि (tavāpi) - to you also; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - among the brāhmaṇas; तपस्विषु (tapasviṣu) - among the ascetics; बिभेति (bibheti) - is afraid; हि (hi) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - just as; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); ब्रह्मचारि-प्रधर्षितः (brahmacāri-pradharṣitaḥ) - overpowered by brahmacārins; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रह्मचर्यस्य (brahmacaryasya) - of brahmacarya (celibacy); फलम् (phalam) - the fruit; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the ṛṣis; इह (iha) - here; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen;]
(Directly and to you also this among the brāhmaṇas among the ascetics is afraid indeed just as Śakra, overpowered by brahmacārins. That fruit of brahmacarya of the ṛṣis here is seen. (13-74-37))
This is directly evident to you also: among the ascetic brāhmaṇas, even Śakra is afraid after being overpowered by brahmacārins. Thus, the fruit of brahmacarya among the ṛṣis is seen here. (13-74-37)
मातापित्रोः पूजने यो धर्मस्तमपि मे शृणु। शुश्रूषते यः पितरं न चासूयेत्कथञ्चन ॥ मातरं वानहंवादी गुरुमाचार्यमेव च ॥१३-७४-३८॥
mātāp itroḥ pūjane yo dharmas tam api me śṛṇu। śuśrūṣate yaḥ pitaraṃ na cāsūyet-kathañcana॥ mātaraṃ vā anahaṃvādī gurum ācāryam eva ca॥13-74-38॥
[मातापित्रोः (mātāp itroḥ) - of mother and father; पूजने (pūjane) - in honoring; यः (yaḥ) - who; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; तम् (tam) - that; अपि (api) - also; मे (me) - to me; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; शुश्रूषते (śuśrūṣate) - serves; यः (yaḥ) - who; पितरम् (pitaraṃ) - father; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; असूयेत् (asūyet) - should envy; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; वा (vā) - or; अनहंवादी (anahaṃvādī) - not egotistic in speech; गुरुम् (gurum) - teacher; आचार्यम् (ācāryam) - preceptor; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(In the honoring of mother and father, what duty (there is), that also hear from me. He who serves the father and does not envy in any way—(the same applies to) the mother, or (is) not egotistic in speech to the teacher and the preceptor indeed and.)
Now hear from me about the duty that lies in honoring mother and father. Whoever serves the father and does not envy in any way, likewise the mother, and speaks without pride to the teacher and to the preceptor—such is the way. (13-74-38)
तस्य राजन्फलं विद्धि स्वर्लोके स्थानमुत्तमम्। न च पश्येत नरकं गुरुशुश्रूषुरात्मवान् ॥१३-७४-३९॥
tasya rājan phalaṁ viddhi svarloke sthānam uttamam। na ca paśyet narakaṁ guruśuśrūṣur ātmavān॥13-74-39॥

(Of him, O king, the fruit know [to be] in heaven, a most excellent place. And he who serves the guru, self-controlled, should not see hell.)
Know, O king, that the fruit for such a one is an excellent place in heaven; moreover, the self-controlled one who serves his guru does not see hell. (13-74-39)
