विधिं गवां परमहं श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः। येन ताञ्शाश्वताँल्लोकानखिलानश्नुवीमहि ॥१३-७५-१॥
vidhiṁ gavāṁ paramahaṁ śrotum icchāmi tattvataḥ। yena tāñ śāśvatān lokān akhilān aśnuvīmahi ॥13-75-1॥
[विधिं (vidhiṁ) - method; गवां (gavāṁ) - of cows; परमहं (paramahaṁ) - supreme; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly; येन् (yena) - by which; ताञ् (tāñ) - those; शाश्वताँल्लोकान् (śāśvatān lokān) - eternal worlds; अखिलान् (akhilān) - all; अश्नुवीमहि (aśnuvīmahi) - we may attain;]
(I desire to hear truly the supreme method of cows, by which we may attain all those eternal worlds.)
I wish to hear in truth about the supreme method relating to cows, by which we may attain all those eternal worlds. (13-75-1)

न गोदानात्परं किञ्चिद्विद्यते वसुधाधिप। गौर्हि न्यायागता दत्ता सद्यस्तारयते कुलम् ॥१३-७५-२॥
na godānāt paraṃ kiñcid vidyate vasudhādhipa। gaur hi nyāyāgatā dattā sadyas tārayate kulam ॥13-75-2॥
[न (na) - not; गोदानात् (godānāt) - than the gift of a cow; परम् (param) - greater; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; वसुधाधिप (vasudhādhipa) - O lord of the earth; गौः (gauḥ) - a cow; हि (hi) - indeed; न्यायागता (nyāyāgatā) - properly obtained; दत्ता (dattā) - given; सद्यः (sadyas) - immediately; तारयते (tārayate) - saves; कुलम् (kulam) - family;]
(Not exists anything greater than the gift of a cow, O lord of the earth. A cow indeed, properly obtained, given, immediately saves the family.)
O lord of the earth, there exists nothing greater than the gift of a cow. Indeed, a cow that is properly obtained and then given immediately saves the entire family. (13-75-2)
सतामर्थे सम्यगुत्पादितो यः; स वै कॢप्तः सम्यगिष्टः प्रजाभ्यः। तस्मात्पूर्वं ह्यादिकाले प्रवृत्तं; गवां दाने शृणु राजन्विधिं मे ॥१३-७५-३॥
satām-arthe samyag-utpādito yaḥ; sa vai kḷptaḥ samyag-iṣṭaḥ prajābhyaḥ. tasmāt pūrvaṃ hy-ādi-kāle pravṛttaṃ; gavāṃ dāne śṛṇu rājan vidhiṃ me ॥13-75-3॥
[सतामर्थे (satām-arthe) - for the sake of the good; सम्यगुत्पादितः (samyag-utpāditaḥ) - properly produced; यः (yaḥ) - which; that; स (sa) - he; it; वै (vai) - indeed; कॢप्तः (kḷptaḥ) - prepared; सम्यगिष्टः (samyag-iṣṭaḥ) - properly offered; प्रजाभ्यः (prajābhyaḥ) - to the people; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; before; हि (hi) - indeed; आदिकाले (ādi-kāle) - at the beginning; प्रवृत्तम् (pravṛttam) - commenced; begun; गवां (gavām) - of cows; दाने (dāne) - in the giving; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विधिं (vidhim) - the procedure; मे (me) - from me;]
(For the sake of the good, that which is properly produced, he indeed is prepared, properly offered to the people. Therefore, previously indeed, at the beginning, commenced in the giving of cows, hear, O king, the procedure from me.)
For the sake of the virtuous, what is properly produced becomes truly suitable and rightly given to the people. Therefore, in former times, at the beginning, the practice began for offering cows—hear from me, O king, the proper procedure. (13-75-3)
पुरा गोषूपनीतासु गोषु संदिग्धदर्शिना। मान्धात्रा प्रकृतं प्रश्नं बृहस्पतिरभाषत ॥१३-७५-४॥
purā goṣūpanītāsu goṣu saṃdigdha-darśinā. m āndhātrā prakṛtaṃ praśnaṃ bṛhaspatir abhāṣata ॥13-75-4॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; in ancient times; गोषूपनीतासु (goṣūpanītāsu) - when the cows had been brought in; (locative plural, feminine); गोषु (goṣu) - among the cows; (locative plural, feminine); संदिग्धदर्शिना (saṃdigdha-darśinā) - by the one who perceived uncertainty; by the doubting (observer); मान्धात्रा (māndhātrā) - by Māndhātr̥ (the king); प्रकृतं (prakṛtam) - pertinent; concerning (the matter); प्रश्नं (praśnam) - the question; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke;]
(Formerly, when the cows had been brought in, among the cows, by the doubting observer Māndhātr̥, the pertinent question, Bṛhaspati spoke.)
Long ago, when the cows were brought in, while among the cows, Bṛhaspati spoke the appropriate answer to the question asked by the doubting Māndhātr̥. (13-75-4)
द्विजातिमभिसत्कृत्य श्वः कालमभिवेद्य च। प्रदानार्थे नियुञ्जीत रोहिणीं नियतव्रतः ॥१३-७५-५॥
dvijātim abhisatkṛtya śvaḥ kālam abhivedya ca। pradānārthe niyuñjīta rohiṇīṃ niyatavrataḥ॥13-75-5॥
[द्विजातिम् (dvijātim) - the twice-born; (i.e., a Brāhmaṇa;) अभिसत्कृत्य (abhisatkṛtya) - having honored; (after honoring;) श्वः (śvaḥ) - tomorrow; कालम् (kālam) - the time; अभिवेद्य (abhivedya) - having understood; (having ascertained;) च (ca) - and; प्रदानार्थे (pradānārthe) - for the purpose of giving; नियुञ्जीत (niyuñjīta) - should employ; रोहिणीम् (rohiṇīm) - the Rohiṇī cow; नियतव्रतः (niyatavrataḥ) - one of fixed vow;]
(Having honored the twice-born, and having ascertained the time for tomorrow, one of fixed vow should employ the Rohiṇī cow for the purpose of giving.)
After honoring the twice-born and determining the time for the next day, one of steadfast vow should employ the Rohiṇī cow for the intended charity. (13-75-5)
आह्वानं च प्रयुञ्जीत समङ्गे बहुलेति च। प्रविश्य च गवां मध्यमिमां श्रुतिमुदाहरेत् ॥१३-७५-६॥
āhvānaṃ ca prayuñjīta samaṅge bahuleti ca। praviśya ca gavāṃ madhyamimāṃ śrutimudāharet ॥13-75-6॥
[आह्वानं (āhvānam) - invocation; च (ca) - and; प्रयुञ्जीत (prayuñjīta) - one should perform; समङ्गे (samaṅge) - in the complete (ritual); बहुलेति (bahuleti) - the word ‘bahula’ (as a spoken phrase); च (ca) - and; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; च (ca) - and; गवां (gavām) - of the cows; मध्यमिमां (madhyamimām) - the middle (note) one; श्रुतिम् (śrutim) - pitch; उदाहरेत् (udāharet) - one should utter;]
(Invocation and one should perform, in the complete (ritual), the word 'bahula' and also, having entered, of the cows, the middle note pitch one should utter.)
One should offer the invocation as well as, in the full ritual, utter the phrase ‘bahula’; then, entering (the place), one should recite the middle pitch of the cows' call. (13-75-6)
गौर्मे माता गोवृषभः पिता मे; दिवं शर्म जगती मे प्रतिष्ठा। प्रपद्यैवं शर्वरीमुष्य गोषु; मुनिर्वाणीमुत्सृजेद्गोप्रदाने ॥१३-७५-७॥
gaur me mātā govṛṣabhaḥ pitā me; divaṃ śarma jagatī me pratiṣṭhā. prapadyai vaṃ śarvarīm uṣya goṣu; munir vāṇīm utsṛjed gopradāne ॥13-75-7॥

(The cow my mother; the bull my father; heaven happiness, earth my support. Having thus entered, having spent the night among cows, the sage should utter speech at the giving of a cow (gift). (13-75-7))
The cow is my mother; the bull is my father; heaven is my happiness, and the earth is my support. Having thus entered and spent the night among cows, the sage should recite these words at the gifting of a cow. (13-75-7)
स तामेकां निशां गोभिः समसख्यः समव्रतः। ऐकात्म्यगमनात्सद्यः कल्मषाद्विप्रमुच्यते ॥१३-७५-८॥
sa tām ekāṃ niśāṃ gobhiḥ samasakhyaḥ samavrataḥ. aikātmyagamanāt sadyaḥ kalmaṣād vipramucyate ॥13-75-8॥
[स (sa) - he; ताम् (tām) - her; एकां (ekāṃ) - one; single; निशां (niśāṃ) - night; गोभिः (gobhiḥ) - with cows; समसख्यः (samasakhyaḥ) - with friends; in company; समव्रतः (samavrataḥ) - with the same vow; equally resolved; ऐकात्म्यगमनात् (aikātmya-gamanāt) - from going to unity; by going to oneness; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; कल्मषात् (kalmaṣāt) - from impurity; from sin; विप्रमुच्यते (vipramucyate) - is completely freed;]
(He her one night with cows with friends with the same vow from going to unity immediately from impurity is completely freed.)
If he, together with cows, friends, and like-minded companions, passes one night in unity with her, he is immediately freed from impurity. (13-75-8)
उत्सृष्टवृषवत्सा हि प्रदेया सूर्यदर्शने। त्रिविधं प्रतिपत्तव्यमर्थवादाशिषः स्तवाः ॥१३-७५-९॥
utsṛṣṭavṛṣavatsā hi pradeyā sūryadarśane। trividham pratipattavyam arthavādāśiṣaḥ stavāḥ ॥13-75-9॥
[उत्सृष्टवृषवत्सा (utsṛṣṭa-vṛṣa-vatsā) - having a bull-calf let loose; (i.e., cow not tied to calf); हि (hi) - indeed; प्रदेया (pradeyā) - are to be given; सूर्यदर्शने (sūryadarśane) - at the sight of the sun; (i.e., at sunrise); त्रिविधं (trividham) - threefold; प्रतिपत्तव्यम् (pratipattavyam) - is to be understood; अर्थवादाशिषः (arthavāda-āśiṣaḥ) - praise, benedictions; स्तवाः (stavāḥ) - hymns;]
(Cows having a bull-calf let loose are indeed to be given at sunrise. Threefold is to be understood: praise, benedictions, hymns.)

ऊर्जस्विन्य ऊर्जमेधाश्च यज्ञो; गर्भोऽमृतस्य जगतश्च प्रतिष्ठा। क्षितौ राधःप्रभवः शश्वदेव; प्राजापत्याः सर्वमित्यर्थवादः ॥१३-७५-१०॥
ūrjasvinya ūrjamedhāś ca yajño; garbho'mṛtasya jagataś ca pratiṣṭhā. kṣitau rādhaḥprabhavaḥ śaśvadeva; prājāpatyāḥ sarvam ity arthavādaḥ ॥13-75-10॥
[ऊर्जस्विन्य (ūrjasvinya) - O energetic one; (addressed with the quality of possessing vigour;) ऊर्जमेधाः (ūrjamedhāḥ) - one whose sacrifice is vigour (itself); च (ca) - and; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - the sacrifice; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - the womb; अमृतस्य (amṛtasya) - of immortality; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; च (ca) - and; प्रतिष्ठा (pratiṣṭhā) - foundation; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - in the earth; राधःप्रभवः (rādhaḥprabhavaḥ) - (whose) origin is in prosperity; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - everlasting; एव (eva) - indeed; प्राजापत्याः (prājāpatyāḥ) - of (the) Prajāpati (origin); सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इति (iti) - thus; अर्थवादः (arthavādaḥ) - praise statement (stating the sense; laudatory assertion;);]
(O energetic one, the sacrifice whose offering is vigour; the womb of immortality and the foundation of the world. In the earth, its origin is prosperity, everlasting indeed; all is (of) Prajāpati thus—(this is) a statement of praise.)
O energetic one, the sacrifice whose essence is vigour is the womb of immortality and the foundation of the world. Its origin in the earth is ever rooted in prosperity and belongs wholly to Prajāpati. Thus, this is an expression of praise. (13-75-10)
गावो ममैनः प्रणुदन्तु सौर्या; स्तथा सौम्याः स्वर्गयानाय सन्तु। आम्नाता मे ददतीराश्रयं तु; तथानुक्ताः सन्तु सर्वाशिषो मे ॥१३-७५-११॥
gāvo mamainaḥ praṇudantu sauryāḥ; stathā saumyāḥ svargayānāya santu. āmnātā me dadatīrāśrayaṃ tu; tathānuktāḥ santu sarvāśiṣo me ॥13-75-11॥
[गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; मम (mama) - my; एनः (enaḥ) - sin; प्रणुदन्तु (praṇudantu) - may (they) drive away; सौर्याः (sauryāḥ) - radiant (ones); तथा (tathā) - so, likewise; सौम्याः (saumyāḥ) - gentle (ones); स्वर्गयानाय (svargayānāya) - for going to heaven; सन्तु (santu) - may they be; आम्नाताः (āmnātāḥ) - recited (ones), prescribed ones; मे (me) - to me; ददतीः (dadatīḥ) - bestowing; आश्रयम् (āśrayam) - support, refuge; तु (tu) - but; तथा (tathā) - so, likewise; अनुक्ताः (anuktāḥ) - unspoken (ones); सन्तु (santu) - may they be; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; आशिषः (āśiṣaḥ) - blessings; मे (me) - to me;]
(Cows, my sin, may drive away, radiant ones; so, gentle ones, for heaven-going, may they be. Recited ones to me bestowing support, but so unspoken ones, may they be all blessings to me.)
May the cows, radiant ones, drive away my sin; likewise, may the gentle ones be for going to heaven. Those that have been recited, may they grant me support; and likewise, may all unspoken blessings be mine. (13-75-11)
शेषोत्सर्गे कर्मभिर्देहमोक्षे; सरस्वत्यः श्रेयसि सम्प्रवृत्ताः। यूयं नित्यं पुण्यकर्मोपवाह्या; दिशध्वं मे गतिमिष्टां प्रपन्नाः ॥१३-७५-१२॥
śeṣotsarge karmabhir dehamokṣe; sarasvatyaḥ śreyasi sampravṛttāḥ. yūyaṃ nityaṃ puṇyakarmopavāhyā; diśadhvaṃ me gatimiṣṭāṃ prapannāḥ ॥13-75-12॥
[शेषोत्सर्गे (śeṣotsarge) - in the release (otsarga) of what remains (śeṣa); कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions (karmas); देहमोक्षे (dehamokṣe) - in the liberation (mokṣa) from the body (deha); सरस्वत्यः (sarasvatyaḥ) - O overseers of the Sarasvatī (river goddesses); श्रेयसि (śreyasi) - in welfare (śreyas); सम्प्रवृत्ताः (sampravṛttāḥ) - engaged; यूयं (yūyam) - you (all); नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; पुण्यकर्मोपवाह्या (puṇyakarmopavāhyāḥ) - bearers (upavāhyāḥ) of meritorious deeds (puṇyakarma); दिशध्वं (diśadhvaṃ) - direct/lead (imperative plural); मे (me) - me; गतिमिष्टां (gatimiṣṭām) - desired (iṣṭāṃ) path/attainment (gati); प्रपन्नाः (prapannāḥ) - having been attained (to you);]
(In the release of what remains, by actions, in the liberation from the body, O Sarasvatī (river goddesses), engaged in welfare, you (all) always bearers of meritorious deeds; lead me to the desired attainment, being attained (by me).)
At the time of final release, by virtuous actions, in liberation from the body, O Sarasvatī goddesses engaged in the supreme good, you who are ever bearers of meritorious deeds, lead me, now surrendered, to the path I desire. (13-75-12)
या वै यूयं सोऽहमद्यैकभावो; युष्मान्दत्त्वा चाहमात्मप्रदाता। मनश्च्युता मनएवोपपन्नाः; सन्धुक्षध्वं सौम्यरूपोग्ररूपाः ॥१३-७५-१३॥
yā vai yūyaṁ so'ham adyaikabhāvo; yuṣmān dattvā cāham ātmapradātā. manaś-cyutā mana eva upapannāḥ; sandhukṣadhvaṁ saumyarūpa ugrarūpāḥ ॥13-75-13॥
[या (yā) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (all); सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; अद्य (adya) - today; एकभावः (ekabhāvaḥ) - of single essence; युष्मान् (yuṣmān) - you (all); दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; आत्मप्रदाता (ātmapradātā) - giver of the self; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; च्युता (cyutāḥ) - fallen; मन एव (mana eva) - to the mind indeed; उपपन्नाः (upapannāḥ) - have arrived; सन्धुक्षध्वम् (sandhukṣadhvam) - you (all) agitate; सौम्यरूप (saumyarūpa) - with gentle form; उग्ररूपाः (ugrarūpāḥ) - with fierce form;]
(Who indeed you (all), he I today of single essence; having given you (all) and I giver of the self. Minds fallen to the mind indeed have come; agitate, O you of gentle form, of fierce form.)
I, who indeed am what you all are, am today of one essence with you; having given you (all), I am the giver of myself. Having fallen from mind, I have come into the mind itself; O you of gentle and fierce forms, stir up (the energies). (13-75-13)
एवं तस्याग्रे पूर्वमर्धं वदेत; गवां दाता विधिवत्पूर्वदृष्टम्। प्रतिब्रूयाच्छेषमर्धं द्विजातिः; प्रतिगृह्णन्वै गोप्रदाने विधिज्ञः ॥१३-७५-१४॥
evaṃ tasyāgre pūrvam ardhaṃ vadeta; gavāṃ dātā vidhivat pūrva dṛṣṭam। pratibrūyāc cheṣam ardhaṃ dvijātiḥ; pratigṛhṇan vai go-pradāne vidhi-jñaḥ ॥13-75-14॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तस्य (tasya) - his; अग्रे (agre) - before; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - first; अर्धं (ardham) - half; वदेत (vadeta) - should speak; गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; दाता (dātā) - giver; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the rule; पूर्वदृष्टम् (pūrva-dṛṣṭam) - previously prescribed; प्रतिब्रूयात् (pratibrūyāt) - should respond; शेषमर्धं (śeṣam ardham) - remaining half; द्विजातिः (dvijātiḥ) - twice-born; प्रतिगृह्णन् (pratigṛhṇan) - while receiving; वै (vai) - indeed; गोप्रदाने (go-pradāne) - in the giving of cows; विधिज्ञः (vidhi-jñaḥ) - knower of the rule;]
(Thus before him, first half should be spoken; the giver of cows, according to the rule, (should speak) the previously prescribed (words). The twice-born should respond with the remaining half; while receiving, indeed, in the giving of cows, the knower of the rule.)
Thus, in front of him, the giver of cows should recite the first half, as prescribed by rule. The recipient, knowledgeable of the ordinance, being a twice-born, should reply with the remaining half while accepting, at the cow-giving. (13-75-14)
गां ददानीति वक्तव्यमर्घ्यवस्त्रवसुप्रदः। ऊधस्या भरितव्या च वैष्णवीति च चोदयेत् ॥१३-७५-१५॥
gāṃ dadānīti vaktavyamarghyavast­ravasupradaḥ। ūdhasyā bharitavyā ca vaiṣṇavīti ca codayet ॥13-75-15॥
[गां (gāṃ) - cow (accusative singular); ददानीति (dadānīti) - ‘I shall give’ thus; वक्तव्यम् (vaktavyam) - should be said; र्घ्यवस्त्रवसुप्रदः (arghya-vastra-vasu-pradaḥ) - bestower of arghya (offering), cloth, and wealth; ऊधस्या (ūdhasyā) - of the udder; भरितव्या (bharitavyā) - should be filled; च (ca) - and; वैष्णवीति (vaiṣṇavīti) - ‘Vaishnavi’ thus; च (ca) - and; चोदयेत् (codayet) - should be instigated;]
(Cow ‘I shall give’ thus should be said, the giver of arghya, cloth, and wealth. Of the udder, it should be filled, and ‘Vaishnavi’ thus and should be instigated. (13-75-15))
One should declare, ‘I shall give the cow;’ the bestower of arghya (offering), cloth, and wealth. The udder should be filled, and the cow should be prompted with the name ‘Vaishnavi’. (13-75-15)
नाम सङ्कीर्तयेत्तस्या यथासङ्ख्योत्तरं स वै। फलं षड्विंशदष्टौ च सहस्राणि च विंशतिः ॥१३-७५-१६॥
nāma saṅkīrtayettasyā yathāsaṅkhyottaraṃ sa vai। phalaṃ ṣaḍviṃśadaṣṭau ca sahasrāṇi ca viṃśatiḥ ॥13-75-16॥
[नाम (nāma) - name; सङ्कीर्तयेत् (saṅkīrtayet) - should recite; तस्या (tasyā) - of her; यथा (yathā) - as; सङ्ख्या (saṅkhyā) - number; उत्तरं (uttaram) - exceeding; स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; षड्विंशत् (ṣaḍviṃśat) - twenty-six; अष्टौ (aṣṭau) - eight; च (ca) - and; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; च (ca) - and; विंशतिः (viṃśatiḥ) - twenty;]
(Name should recite of her as number exceeding, he indeed; the fruit twenty-six eight and thousands and twenty.)
Whoever recites her name, as many times as the number specified and more, indeed receives the fruit: twenty-six thousand and twenty-eight. (13-75-16)
एवमेतान्गुणान्वृद्धान्गवादीनां यथाक्रमम्। गोप्रदाता समाप्नोति समस्तानष्टमे क्रमे ॥१३-७५-१७॥
evam etān guṇān vṛddhān gavādīnāṃ yathā kramam। gopradātā samāpnoti samastān aṣṭame krame ॥13-75-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतान् (etān) - these; गुणान् (guṇān) - virtues; वृद्धान् (vṛddhān) - increased; गवादीनां (gavādīnāṃ) - of cows and others; यथा (yathā) - as; क्रमम् (kramam) - order; गोप्रदाता (gopradātā) - the giver of cows; समाप्नोति (samāpnoti) - attains; समस्तान् (samastān) - all; अष्टमे (aṣṭame) - eighth; क्रमे (krame) - order;]
(Thus these virtues increased of cows and others as order, the giver of cows attains all in the eighth order.)
In this way, the giver of cows attains all the increased virtues of cows and the like in their respective order, all at the eighth stage. (13-75-17)
गोदः शीली निर्भयश्चार्घदाता; न स्याद्दुःखी वसुदाता च कामी। ऊधस्योढा भारत यश्च विद्वा; न्व्याख्यातास्ते वैष्णवाश्चन्द्रलोकाः ॥१३-७५-१८॥
godaḥ śīlī nirbhayaś cārghadātā; na syād duḥkhī vasudātā ca kāmī। ūdhasyoḍhā bhārata yaś ca vidvā; nvvyākhyātās te vaiṣṇavāś candralokāḥ ॥13-75-18॥
[गोदः (godaḥ) - one who gives a cow; शीली (śīlī) - virtuous; निर्भयः (nirbhayaḥ) - fearless; च (ca) - and; अर्घदाता (arghadātā) - one who offers arghya (water of greeting); न (na) - not; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; दुःखी (duḥkhī) - unhappy; वसुदाता (vasudātā) - giver of wealth; च (ca) - and; कामि (kāmī) - desirous; ऊधस्य (ūdhasya) - of uddha (udder, i.e., of cow); उढा (uḍhā) - one who has borne (the udder), a wife; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; विद्वा (vidvā) - the learned one; न्व्याख्याताः (nvvyākhyātāḥ) - thus have been explained; ते (te) - they; वैष्णवाः (vaiṣṇavāḥ) - Viṣṇu's devotees; चन्द्रलोकाः (candralokāḥ) - like the world of the moon;]
(One who gives a cow, virtuous, fearless, and giver of arghya; should not be unhappy, giver of wealth and desirous. One who has a wife, O Bhārata, and who is learned; thus have been explained— they are Viṣṇu's devotees like the world of the moon (bright).)
O Bhārata, a giver of cows, one devoted to virtue, fearless, a giver of arghya, who does not suffer sorrow, a giver of wealth, free from desire, one who has a wife and who is learned—all these have been described; they are Vaishnavas and are like the lunar world (radiant, pure). (13-75-18)
गा वै दत्त्वा गोव्रती स्यात्त्रिरात्रं; निशां चैकां संवसेतेह ताभिः। काम्याष्टम्यां वर्तितव्यं त्रिरात्रं; रसैर्वा गोः शकृता प्रस्नवैर्वा ॥१३-७५-१९॥
gā vai dattvā govratī syāt trirātraṁ; niśāṁ caikāṁ saṁvaseteha tābhiḥ. kāmyāṣṭamyāṁ vartitavyaṁ trirātraṁ; rasair vā goḥ śakṛtā prasnavair vā ॥13-75-19॥
[गा (gā) - cow; वै (vai) - indeed; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; गोव्रती (govratī) - one observing the vow relating to cows; स्यात् (syāt) - should become; त्रिरात्रं (trirātram) - for three nights; निशां (niśām) - a night; च (ca) - and; एकां (ekām) - one; संवसेत् (saṁvaset) - should dwell; इह (iha) - here; ताभिः (tābhiḥ) - with them (those cows); काम्याष्टम्यां (kāmyāṣṭamyām) - on the desired eighth day (āṣṭamī, eight lunar day, for a particular purpose); वर्तितव्यं (vartitavyam) - should stay; त्रिरात्रं (trirātram) - for three nights; रसायः (rasaiḥ) - with liquids; वा (vā) - or; गोः (goḥ) - of the cow; शकृता (śakṛtā) - with dung; प्रस्नवैः (prasnavaiḥ) - with milkings (stream of milk); वा (vā) - or;]
(Cow indeed, having given, one observing the cow-vow should become for three nights; and a single night should dwell here with them. On the desired eighth-day, should dwell for three nights, with liquids or with cow-dung or with milkings.)
One who has given a cow indeed should observe the cow-vow for three nights; and should spend one night here with those (cows). On the desired aṣṭamī (eighth lunar day), one should remain for three nights, subsisting on liquids, or with cow-dung, or with the stream of milk. (13-75-19)
वेदव्रती स्याद्वृषभप्रदाता; वेदावाप्तिर्गोयुगस्य प्रदाने। तथा गवां विधिमासाद्य यज्वा; लोकानग्र्यान्विन्दते नाविधिज्ञः ॥१३-७५-२०॥
vedavratī syād vṛṣabhapradātā; vedāvāptir goyugasya pradāne. tathā gavāṃ vidhim āsādya yajvā; lokān agryān vindate na avidhijñaḥ ॥13-75-20॥
[वेदव्रती (vedavratī) - one who is devoted to the Vedas; स्यात् (syāt) - may become; वृषभप्रदाता (vṛṣabhapradātā) - giver of a bull; वेदावाप्तिः (vedāvāptiḥ) - attainment of the Veda; गोयुगस्य (goyugasya) - of a pair of cows; प्रदाने (pradāne) - in the giving; तथा (tathā) - thus; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; विधिम् (vidhim) - method; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having obtained; यज्वा (yajvā) - sacrificer; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अग्र्यान् (agryān) - excellent; विन्दते (vindate) - obtains; न (na) - not; अविधिज्ञः (avidhijñaḥ) - one ignorant of the proper method;]
(One devoted to the Vedas may become the giver of a bull; attainment of the Veda is in the giving of a pair of cows. Thus, having obtained the method of cows, the sacrificer obtains excellent worlds; not the one ignorant of the proper method. (13-75-20))
By giving a bull, one devoted to the Vedas may be so called; attainment of the Vedas is through the gifting of a pair of cows. Similarly, a sacrificer who adopts the proper method concerning cows attains the best worlds, but not one who is ignorant of the correct procedure. (13-75-20)
कामान्सर्वान्पार्थिवानेकसंस्था; न्यो वै दद्यात्कामदुघां च धेनुम्। सम्यक्ताः स्युर्हव्यकव्यौघवत्य; स्तासामुक्ष्णां ज्यायसां सम्प्रदानम् ॥१३-७५-२१॥
kāmān sarvān pārthivān eka-saṃsthāḥ; nīyo vai dadyāt kāma-dughāṃ ca dhenum. samyaktāḥ syur havya-kavya-ogha-vaty; tāsām ukṣṇāṃ jyāyasāṃ sampradānam (13-75-21)
[कामान् (kāmān) - desires (acc. pl.); सर्वान् (sarvān) - all (acc. pl.); पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - earthly (things/beings) (acc. pl.); एकसंस्था (eka-saṃsthāḥ) - possessed together (nom. pl.); न्यः (nīyaḥ) - the one to whom are led (nom. sg.); वै (vai) - indeed; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; कामदुघाम् (kāma-dughām) - wish-fulfilling (cow, acc. sg.); च (ca) - and; धेनुम् (dhenum) - cow (acc. sg.); सम्यक्ताः (samyaktāḥ) - purified (nom. pl.); स्युः (syuḥ) - should be; हव्यकव्यौघवत्यः (havya-kavya-ogha-vatyāḥ) - possessed of abundance of oblations (nom. pl.); स्तासाम् (tāsām) - of those (gen. pl.); उक्ष्णाम् (ukṣṇām) - of bulls (gen. pl.); ज्यायसाम् (jyāyasām) - of the greater (gen. pl.); सम्प्रदानम् (sampradānam) - the giving (nom. sg.);]
(All desires, all earthly (things), possessed together; to the one to whom (they) are led indeed, (he) should give also a wish-fulfilling cow. Pure (should be) those possessed of a wealth of offerings; among those, the gift of the greatest bulls.)
Having assembled all desirable and royal things in one place, one should truly give a wish-fulfilling cow. The best cows are those pure ones abounding in offerings, and among them, the gift of the greatest bulls is considered the highest. (13-75-21)
न चाशिष्यायाव्रतायोपकुर्या; न्नाश्रद्दधानाय न वक्रबुद्धये। गुह्यो ह्ययं सर्वलोकस्य धर्मो; नेमं धर्मं यत्र तत्र प्रजल्पेत् ॥१३-७५-२२॥
na ca āśiṣyāya avratāya upakuryā; na aśraddadhānāya na vakra-buddhaye। guhyaḥ hi ayam sarva-lokasya dharmaḥ; na imam dharmam yatra tatra prajalpet ॥13-75-22॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; आशिष्याय (āśiṣyāya) - to one unworthy as a disciple; अव्रताय (avratāya) - to one without vows; उपकुर्या (upakuryā) - should be rendered (service/taught); न (na) - not; अश्रद्दधानाय (aśraddadhānāya) - to one lacking faith; न (na) - not; वक्रबुद्धये (vakra-buddhaye) - to one of crooked intellect; गुह्यः (guhyaḥ) - secret; हि (hi) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; सर्वलोकस्य (sarva-lokasya) - of all worlds (of all people); धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; न (na) - not; इमं (imaṃ) - this; धर्मं (dharmam) - dharma; यत्र (yatra) - where; तत्र (tatra) - there; प्रजल्पेत् (prajalpet) - should speak/chat;]
(And not to one unworthy as a disciple, not to one without vows should it be rendered; not to one lacking faith, not to one of crooked intellect. Secret indeed is this dharma of all worlds; this dharma should not be spoken just anywhere.)
This should not be taught to the unworthy, to the vowless, to those lacking faith, or to those of crooked intellect. This is a secret dharma of all people and should not be discussed indiscriminately. (13-75-22)
सन्ति लोके श्रद्दधाना मनुष्याः; सन्ति क्षुद्रा राक्षसा मानुषेषु। येषां दानं दीयमानं ह्यनिष्टं; नास्तिक्यं चाप्याश्रयन्ते ह्यपुण्याः ॥१३-७५-२३॥
santi loke śraddadhānā manuṣyāḥ; santi kṣudrā rākṣasā mānuṣeṣu। yeṣāṃ dānaṃ dīyamānaṃ hyaniṣṭaṃ; nāstikyaṃ cāpyāśrayante hyapuṇyāḥ ॥13-75-23॥
[सन्ति (santi) - there are; लोके (loke) - in the world; श्रद्दधाना (śraddadhānā) - faithful; मनुष्याः (manuṣyāḥ) - human beings; सन्ति (santi) - there are; क्षुद्रा (kṣudrā) - petty; राक्षसा (rākṣasā) - demonic (ones); मानुषेषु (mānuṣeṣu) - among men; येषां (yeṣāṃ) - whose; दानं (dānaṃ) - gift; दीयमानं (dīyamānaṃ) - being given; हि (hi) - indeed; अनिष्टं (aniṣṭaṃ) - unwelcome; नास्तिक्यं (nāstikyaṃ) - unbelief; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; आश्रयन्ते (āśrayante) - take refuge in; हि (hi) - indeed; अपुण्याः (apuṇyāḥ) - unrighteous ones;]
(There are in the world faithful human beings; there are petty demonic ones among men. Whose gift, being given, indeed is unwelcome; unbelief and also resort to indeed unrighteous ones.)
There are in the world faithful people; among men, there are also petty, demonic ones. The gifts given by such unrighteous ones are truly unwelcome; they also take refuge in unbelief. (13-75-23)
बार्हस्पत्यं वाक्यमेतन्निशम्य; ये राजानो गोप्रदानानि कृत्वा। लोकान्प्राप्ताः पुण्यशीलाः सुवृत्ता; स्तान्मे राजन्कीर्त्यमानान्निबोध ॥१३-७५-२४॥
bārhaspatyaṁ vākyam etan niśamya; ye rājāno gopradānāni kṛtvā. lokān prāptāḥ puṇyaśīlāḥ suvṛttāḥ; tān me rājan kīrtyamānān nibodha ॥13-75-24॥
[बार्हस्पत्यं (bārhaspatyam) - of Bṛhaspati; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - statement; एतत् (etat) - this; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; ये (ye) - who; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; गोप्रदानानि (gopradānāni) - gifts of cows; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - attained; पुण्यशीलाः (puṇyaśīlāḥ) - having virtuous nature; सुवृत्ताः (suvṛttāḥ) - well-conducted; तान् (tān) - those; मे (me) - my; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कीर्त्यमानान् (kīrtyamānān) - being praised; निबोध (nibodha) - know;]
(Having heard this statement of Bṛhaspati; those kings, having made gifts of cows, having attained worlds, possessing virtuous nature, well-conducted; those of mine, O king, being praised, know.)
O king, having listened to this statement of Bṛhaspati: Those virtuous and well-conducted kings who made gifts of cows and attained the worlds—know those, praised by me. (13-75-24)
उशीनरो विष्वगश्वो नृगश्च; भगीरथो विश्रुतो यौवनाश्वः। मान्धाता वै मुचुकुन्दश्च राजा; भूरिद्युम्नो नैषधः सोमकश्च ॥१३-७५-२५॥

पुरूरवा भरतश्चक्रवर्ती; यस्यान्वये भारताः सर्व एव। तथा वीरो दाशरथिश्च रामो; ये चाप्यन्ये विश्रुताः कीर्तिमन्तः ॥१३-७५-२६॥

(Purūravas, Bharata the universal monarch; in whose lineage indeed all the Bhāratas. So also the hero, Rāma the son of Daśaratha; and who also other renowned ones possessed of fame.)

तथा राजा पृथुकर्मा दिलीपो; दिवं प्राप्तो गोप्रदाने विधिज्ञः। यज्ञैर्दानैस्तपसा राजधर्मै; र्मान्धाताभूद्गोप्रदानैश्च युक्तः ॥१३-७५-२७॥
tathā rājā pṛthukarmā dilīpo; divaṃ prāpto gopradāne vidhijñaḥ. yajñairdānaistapasā rājadharmair māndhātābhūd gopradānaiś ca yuktaḥ ॥13-75-27॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; राजा (rājā) - king; पृथुकर्मा (pṛthukarmā) - performer of great deeds; दिलीपः (dilīpaḥ) - Dilipa; दिवं (divaṃ) - heaven; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; गोप्रदाने (gopradāne) - in giving cows; विधिज्ञः (vidhijñaḥ) - knower of proper method; यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; दानैः (dānaiḥ) - by gifts; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; राजधर्मैः (rājadharmaiḥ) - by royal duties; मान्धाता (māndhātā) - Mandhata; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; गोप्रदानैः (gopradānaiḥ) - by giving cows; च (ca) - and; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged;]
(Thus king Dilipa, performer of great deeds, attained heaven, being a knower of proper method in giving cows. Mandhata became engaged by sacrifices, gifts, austerity, royal duties, and by giving cows.)
Thus, King Dilipa, performer of great deeds, attained heaven by properly giving cows. Mandhata too was engaged in sacrifices, gifts, austerities, royal duties, and by giving cows. (13-75-27)
तस्मात्पार्थ त्वमपीमां मयोक्तां; बार्हस्पतीं भारतीं धारयस्व। द्विजाग्र्येभ्यः सम्प्रयच्छ प्रतीतो; गाः पुण्या वै प्राप्य राज्यं कुरूणाम् ॥१३-७५-२८॥
tasmāt pārtha tvam apīmāṃ mayoktāṃ; bārhaspatīṃ bhāratīṃ dhārayasva. dvijāgrye bhyaḥ samprayaccha pratīto; gāḥ puṇyā vai prāpya rājyaṃ kurūṇām ॥13-75-28॥

(Therefore, O Pārtha, you also (should) accept this speech of Bṛhaspati (as) spoken by me; having obtained the kingdom of the Kurus, indeed give meritorious cows to the foremost Brāhmaṇas being convinced.)
Therefore, O Pārtha, you also should accept this Bārhaspatī speech that I have spoken; after obtaining the kingdom of the Kurus, give meritorious cows to the foremost of the Brāhmaṇas with conviction. (13-75-28)

[तथा (tathā) - thus; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - (he) accomplished; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhīṣma; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - told; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; गोप्रदाने (gopradāne) - in the giving of cows; सः (saḥ) - he; मान्धातुः (māndhātuḥ) - of Māndhātu; देवदेवोपदिष्टं (devadevopadiṣṭam) - instructed by the god of gods; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; धर्मं (dharmaṁ) - dharma; धारयामास (dhārayāmāsa) - upheld; राजा (rājā) - the king;]
(Thus all (he) accomplished Dharmarāja; by Bhīṣma told according to rule in the giving of cows. He of Māndhātu, instructed by the god of gods, properly dharma upheld the king.)
Thus Dharmarāja accomplished everything as instructed by Bhīṣma regarding the proper giving of cows. He, like Māndhātu, upheld the dharma taught by the god of gods, the king. (13-75-29)
इति नृप सततं गवां प्रदाने; यवशकलान्सह गोमयैः पिबानः। क्षितितलशयनः शिखी यतात्मा; वृष इव राजवृषस्तदा बभूव ॥१३-७५-३०॥
iti nṛpa satataṃ gavāṃ pradāne; yavaśakalān saha gomayaiḥ pibānaḥ। kṣititalaśayanaḥ śikhī yatātmā; vṛṣa iva rājavṛṣas tadā babhūva ॥13-75-30॥
[इति (iti) - thus; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; सततं (satataṃ) - constantly; गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; प्रदाने (pradāne) - in the giving (of); यवशकलान् (yavaśakalān) - barley-flakes; सह (saha) - with; गोमयैः (gomayaiḥ) - with cow-dung; पिबानः (pibānaḥ) - drinking; क्षितितलशयनः (kṣititalaśayanaḥ) - lying on the ground; शिखी (śikhī) - with a topknot; यतात्मा (yatātmā) - self-restrained; वृष (vṛṣa) - bull; इव (iva) - like; राजवृषः (rājavṛṣaḥ) - royal bull; तदा (tadā) - then; बभूव (babhūva) - became;]
(Thus, O king, constantly in the giving of cows, drinking barley-flakes with cow-dung, lying on the ground, with a topknot, self-restrained, he became then like a royal bull.)
Thus, O king, as he continuously gave away cows, subsisting on barley-flakes with cow-dung, lying on the bare ground, wearing a topknot and with self-mastery, he then became like a royal bull. (13-75-30)
स नृपतिरभवत्सदैव ताभ्यः; प्रयतमना ह्यभिसंस्तुवंश्च गा वै। नृपधुरि च न गामयुङ्क्त भूय; स्तुरगवरैरगमच्च यत्र तत्र ॥१३-७५-३१॥
sa nṛpatir abhavat sadaiva tābhyaḥ; prayatamanā hy abhisaṃstuvaṃś ca gā vai. nṛpa-dhuri ca na gāṃ ayuṅkta bhūya; tu raga-varair agamac ca yatra tatra ॥13-75-31॥
[स (sa) - he; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; ताभ्यः (tābhyaḥ) - to them (the cows); प्रयतमनाः (prayatamanāḥ) - earnest-minded; हि (hi) - indeed; अभिसंस्तुवन् (abhisaṃstuvan) - continually praising; च (ca) - and; गा वै (gā vai) - the cows indeed; नृपधुरि (nṛpa-dhuri) - to the kingly yoke; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; गाम् (gām) - the cow; अयुङ्क्त (ayuṅkta) - he yoked; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; तु (tu) - but; रगवरैः (raga-varaiḥ) - with excellent horses; अगमच् (agamac) - he went; च (ca) - and; यत्र तत्र (yatra tatra) - here and there;]
(He, the king, became always to them (the cows) earnest-minded, indeed continually praising and (the) cows indeed. To the kingly yoke and not the cow he yoked again; but with excellent horses he went and here and there.)
He, the king, always attentive to those cows, indeed, with a devoted mind continually praising them. He no longer yoked cows to the royal cart; instead, with excellent horses, he traveled wherever he wished. (13-75-31)
