(Then Yudhiṣṭhira king again son of Śantanu, O king, regarding giving of cows, in detail, intelligent one, asked, endowed with humility.)
Then King Yudhiṣṭhira, endowed with humility, again asked the son of Śantanu, O king, intelligently and in detail concerning the giving of cows. (13-76-1)

गोप्रदाने गुणान्सम्यक्पुनः प्रब्रूहि भारत। न हि तृप्याम्यहं वीर शृण्वानोऽमृतमीदृशम् ॥१३-७६-२॥
gopradāne guṇān samyak punaḥ prabrūhi bhārata। na hi tṛpyāmy ahaṃ vīra śṛṇvānaḥ amṛtam īdṛśam ॥13-76-2॥
[गोप्रदाने (gopradāne) - in the giving of cows; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रब्रूहि (prabrūhi) - tell; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; तृप्यामि (tṛpyāmi) - I am satisfied; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; वीर (vīra) - O hero; शृण्वानः (śṛṇvānaḥ) - hearing; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such;]
(In the giving of cows the qualities properly again tell, O Bhārata. Not indeed I am satisfied, O hero, hearing nectar such.)
O Bhārata, tell again, properly, the qualities in the giving of cows. O hero, I am not satisfied with hearing such nectar. (13-76-2)
इत्युक्तो धर्मराजेन तदा शान्तनवो नृप। सम्यगाह गुणांस्तस्मै गोप्रदानस्य केवलान् ॥१३-७६-३॥
ityukto dharmarājena tadā śāntanavo nṛpa। samyag-āha guṇāṃs tasmai gopradānasya kevalān ॥13-76-3॥

(Thus spoken to by Dharmarāja, then the son of Śāntanu, the king, properly said to him only the qualities of the giving of a cow.)
When thus addressed by Dharmarāja, then the king, the son of Śāntanu, properly explained to him only the qualities of giving a cow. (13-76-3)

वत्सलां गुणसम्पन्नां तरुणीं वस्त्रसंवृताम्। दत्त्वेदृशीं गां विप्राय सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥१३-७६-४॥
vatsalāṃ guṇasampannāṃ taruṇīṃ vastrasaṃvṛtām। dattvedṛśīṃ gāṃ viprāya sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate॥13-76-4॥
[वत्सलाम् (vatsalām) - affectionate (toward her calf); गुणसम्पन्नाम् (guṇasampannām) - endowed with virtues; तरुणीम् (taruṇīm) - young (feminine); वस्त्रसंवृताम् (vastrasaṃvṛtām) - covered with cloth; दत्त्व (dattva) - having given; इदृशीम् (idṛśīm) - such; गाम् (gām) - a cow; विप्राय (viprāya) - to a Brāhmaṇa; सर्वपापैः (sarvapāpaiḥ) - from all sins; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is freed;]
(An affectionate, virtuous, young cow, covered with cloth, having given such (a cow) to a Brāhmaṇa, from all sins one is freed.)
Whoever gives an affectionate, virtuous, young cow, covered with cloth, to a Brāhmaṇa is freed from all sins. (13-76-4)
असुर्या नाम ते लोका गां दत्त्वा तत्र गच्छति। पीतोदकां जग्धतृणां नष्टदुग्धां निरिन्द्रियाम् ॥१३-७६-५॥
asuryā nāma te lokā gāṃ dattvā tatra gacchati। pītodakāṃ jagdhatṛṇāṃ naṣṭadugdhāṃ nirindriyām ॥13-76-5॥
[असुर्या (asuryā) - not-luminous; without light; godless; dark; dull; नाम (nāma) - named; called; ते (te) - those; लोका (lokā) - worlds; realms; गां (gāṃ) - cow; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; तत्र (tatra) - there; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; attains; पीतोदकां (pītodakāṃ) - having drunk water; whose water is drunk; जग्धतृणां (jagdhatṛṇāṃ) - whose grass is eaten; नष्टदुग्धां (naṣṭadugdhāṃ) - whose milk is lost; निरिन्द्रियाम् (nirindriyām) - devoid of strength; powerless;]
(Not-luminous named those worlds, the cow having given, there (one) goes. Having drunk water, having eaten grass, whose milk is lost, devoid of strength.)
Those worlds called 'not-luminous', he attains there, having given a cow that has drunk water, eaten grass, lost its milk, and is devoid of strength. (13-76-5)
जरोग्रामुपयुक्तार्थां जीर्णां कूपमिवाजलम्। दत्त्वा तमः प्रविशति द्विजं क्लेशेन योजयेत् ॥१३-७६-६॥
jarogrām-upayuktārthāṃ jīrṇāṃ kūpam-iva ā-jalam। dattvā tamaḥ praviśati dvijaṃ kleśena yojayet ॥13-76-6॥
[जरोग्राम् (jarogrām) - an old village; उपयुक्तार्थां (upayuktārthām) - who has served its purpose; जीर्णां (jīrṇām) - worn out; कूपम्-इव (kūpam-iva) - like a well; आ-जलम् (ā-jalam) - without water; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; तमः (tamaḥ) - darkness; प्रविशति (praviśati) - enters; द्विजम् (dvijam) - a Brāhmaṇa; क्लेशेन (kleśena) - with affliction; योजयेत् (yojayet) - should cause to join;]
(An old village that has served its purpose, worn out, like a well without water; having given (that to a Brāhmaṇa), enters darkness; one should cause a Brāhmaṇa to join with affliction.)
If one gives an old village, worn out and no longer useful, like a well without water, to a Brāhmaṇa, he enters darkness; such a gift brings hardship to the Brāhmaṇa. (13-76-6)
दुष्टा रुष्टा व्याधिता दुर्बला वा; न दातव्या याश्च मूल्यैरदत्तैः। क्लेशैर्विप्रं योऽफलैः संयुनक्ति; तस्यावीर्याश्चाफलाश्चैव लोकाः ॥१३-७६-७॥
duṣṭā ruṣṭā vyādhitā durbalā vā; na dātavyā yāś ca mūlyair adattaiḥ. kleśair vipraṃ yo'phalaiḥ saṃyunakti; tasyā-vīryāś cāphalāś caiva lokāḥ ॥13-76-7॥
[दुष्टा (duṣṭā) - corrupted; रुष्टा (ruṣṭā) - angry; व्याधिता (vyādhitā) - afflicted by disease; दुर्बला (durbalā) - weak; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; दातव्या (dātavyā) - (should be) given; याः (yāḥ) - which (women); च (ca) - and; मूल्यैः (mūlyaiḥ) - for prices; अदत्तैः (adattaiḥ) - unpaid; क्लेशैः (kleśaiḥ) - with hardships; विप्रं (vipraṃ) - brahmin; यः (yaḥ) - who; अफलैः (aphalaiḥ) - fruitless; संयुनक्ति (saṃyunakti) - associates; तस्य (tasya) - his; अवीर्याः (avīryāḥ) - devoid of power; च (ca) - and; अफलाः (aphalāḥ) - fruitless; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds;]
(Corrupted, angry, diseased, weak or; not to be given those (women) and for prices, unpaid. With hardships a brahmin who with fruitless (things) associates; his worlds are void of power and fruitless indeed.)
One should not give women who are corrupt, angry, diseased, or weak, nor those acquired for unpaid prices. Whoever associates a brahmin with fruitless hardships—his worlds become powerless and fruitless indeed. (13-76-7)
बलान्विताः शीलवयोपपन्नाः; सर्वाः प्रशंसन्ति सुगन्धवत्यः। यथा हि गङ्गा सरितां वरिष्ठा; तथार्जुनीनां कपिला वरिष्ठा ॥१३-७६-८॥
balānvitaāḥ śīla-vayo-upapannāḥ; sarvāḥ praśaṃsanti sugandhavatyaḥ. yathā hi gaṅgā saritāṃ variṣṭhā; tathā arjunīnām kapilā variṣṭhā ॥13-76-8॥
[बलान्विताः (balānvitaāḥ) - endowed with strength; शीलवयोपपन्नाः (śīla-vayaḥ-upapannāḥ) - possessed of virtue and age; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; प्रशंसन्ति (praśaṃsanti) - they praise; सुगन्धवत्यः (sugandhavatyaḥ) - the fragrant ones; यथा (yathā) - as; हि (hi) - indeed; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; सरितां (saritām) - of rivers; वरिष्ठा (variṣṭhā) - the chief; तथा (tathā) - so; अर्जुनीनाम् (arjunīnām) - among Arjunī trees; कपिला (kapilā) - the Kapilā (tree/species); वरिष्ठा (variṣṭhā) - the chief;]
(Endowed with strength, possessed of virtue and age; all the fragrant ones are praised. Just as indeed Gaṅgā is the chief among rivers, so the Kapilā is the chief among Arjunī trees. (13-76-8))
Endowed with strength, good character, and age, all the fragrant ones are praised. Just as Gaṅgā is the foremost among rivers, in the same way Kapilā is the foremost among the Arjunī trees. (13-76-8)

कस्मात्समाने बहुलाप्रदाने; सद्भिः प्रशस्तं कपिलाप्रदानम्। विशेषमिच्छामि महानुभाव; श्रोतुं समर्थो हि भवान्प्रवक्तुम् ॥१३-७६-९॥
kasmātsamāne bahulāpradāne; sadbhiḥ praśastaṃ kapilāpradānam। viśeṣam icchāmi mahānubhāva; śrotuṃ samartho hi bhavān pravaktum ॥13-76-9॥
[कस्मात् (kasmāt) - from what reason; समाने (samāne) - in equal; बहुला-प्रदाने (bahulā-pradāne) - abundant giving; सद्भिः (sadbhiḥ) - by the good; प्रशस्तं (praśastam) - praised; कपिलाप्रदानम् (kapilāpradānam) - offering of brown (cow); विशेषम् (viśeṣam) - special; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; महानुभाव (mahānubhāva) - O great one; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; हि (hi) - indeed; भवान् (bhavān) - you; प्रवक्तुम् (pravaktum) - to speak;]
(From what reason, in equal abundant giving, by the good, praised is the offering of a brown (cow); the special (reason) I desire, O great one, to hear; indeed, you are capable to speak.)
Why, when equal abundant gifts are given, is the offering of a brown cow especially praised by the good? O great one, I wish to hear the distinction; for you are indeed capable of explaining it. (13-76-9)
भीष्म उवाच॥

वृद्धानां ब्रुवतां तात श्रुतं मे यत्प्रभाषसे। वक्ष्यामि तदशेषेण रोहिण्यो निर्मिता यथा ॥१३-७६-१०॥
vṛddhānāṁ bruvatāṁ tāta śrutaṁ me yatprabhāṣase। vakṣyāmi tadaśeṣeṇa rohiṇyo nirmitā yathā ॥13-76-10॥
[वृद्धानां (vṛddhānām) - of the elders; ब्रुवतां (bruvatām) - of those speaking; तात (tāta) - O dear one; श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard; मे (me) - by me; यत् (yat) - which; प्रभाषसे (prabhāṣase) - you speak; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall speak; तत् (tat) - that; अशेषेण (aśeṣeṇa) - in entirety; रोहिण्यः (rohiṇyaḥ) - the Rohiṇīs (cows named Rohiṇī); निर्मिताः (nirmitāḥ) - created; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(O dear one, that which you speak, heard by me from the elders and those speaking, I shall speak that in entirety, as the Rohiṇīs were created.)
O dear one, what you have spoken, which I learned from elders and those who speak, I will now explain in full—how the Rohiṇī cows were created. (13-76-10)
प्रजाः सृजेति व्यादिष्टः पूर्वं दक्षः स्वयम्भुवा। असृजद्वृत्तिमेवाग्रे प्रजानां हितकाम्यया ॥१३-७६-११॥
prajāḥ sṛjeti vyādiṣṭaḥ pūrvaṃ dakṣaḥ svayambhuvā। asṛjad vṛttim eva agre prajānāṃ hitakāmyayā॥13-76-11॥
[प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - offspring; सृज (sṛj) - create; इति (iti) - thus; व्यादिष्टः (vyādiṣṭaḥ) - instructed; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - formerly; दक्षः (dakṣaḥ) - Dakṣa (a proper noun); स्वयम्भुवा (svayambhuvā) - by Svayambhū (the Self-born); असृजत् (asṛjat) - set forth; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - conduct (or way of life); एव (eva) - only; अग्रे (agre) - in the beginning; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of the offspring; हितकाम्यया (hitakāmyayā) - with the desire for welfare;]
(Offspring—to create—thus—instructed—formerly—Dakṣa—by Svayambhū—set forth—conduct—only—in the beginning—of offspring—with the desire for welfare.)
Formerly, Dakṣa, having been instructed by Svayambhū to 'create offspring', at first established only the way of life for the offspring, desiring their welfare. (13-76-11)
यथा ह्यमृतमाश्रित्य वर्तयन्ति दिवौकसः। तथा वृत्तिं समाश्रित्य वर्तयन्ति प्रजा विभो ॥१३-७६-१२॥
yathā hy amṛtam āśritya vartayanti divaukasaḥ। tathā vṛttiṃ samāśritya vartayanti prajā vibho ॥13-76-12॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; वर्तयन्ति (vartayanti) - they live; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven; तथा (tathā) - so; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - livelihood; समाश्रित्य (samāśritya) - having appropriately resorted to; वर्तयन्ति (vartayanti) - they live; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one;]
(Just as indeed, having resorted to nectar, the dwellers of heaven live, so, having appropriately resorted to livelihood, creatures live, O mighty one.)
O mighty one, just as the dwellers of heaven live by resorting to nectar, so too do creatures live by depending on livelihood. (13-76-12)
अचरेभ्यश्च भूतेभ्यश्चराः श्रेष्ठास्ततो नराः। ब्राह्मणाश्च ततः श्रेष्ठास्तेषु यज्ञाः प्रतिष्ठिताः ॥१३-७६-१३॥
acarebhyaś ca bhūtebhyaś carāḥ śreṣṭhās tato narāḥ। brāhmaṇāś ca tataḥ śreṣṭhās teṣu yajñāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ ॥13-76-13॥
[अचरेभ्यः (acarebhyaḥ) - than non-moving (beings); च (ca) - and; भूतेभ्यः (bhūtebhyaḥ) - from beings; चराः (carāḥ) - the moving (beings); श्रेष्ठाः (śreṣṭhāḥ) - are better; ततः (tataḥ) - than them; नराः (narāḥ) - humans; । (।) - ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - than them; श्रेष्ठाः (śreṣṭhāḥ) - are better; तेषु (teṣu) - among them; यज्ञाः (yajñāḥ) - sacrifices; प्रतिष्ठिताः (pratiṣṭhitāḥ) - are established;]
(And than non-moving beings, the moving beings are better; than them, humans; and Brāhmaṇas are better than them; among them, sacrifices are established.)
Among beings, the moving are superior to the non-moving; among the moving, humans are superior; among humans, Brāhmaṇas are superior; and among them, sacrifices are established. (13-76-13)
यज्ञैराप्यायते सोमः स च गोषु प्रतिष्ठितः। सर्वे देवाः प्रमोदन्ते पूर्ववृत्तास्ततः प्रजाः ॥१३-७६-१४॥
yajñair āpyāyate somaḥ sa ca goṣu pratiṣṭhitaḥ। sarve devāḥ pramodante pūrvavṛttās tataḥ prajāḥ॥13-76-14॥
[यज्ञैः (yajñaiḥ) - by sacrifices; आप्यायते (āpyāyate) - is nourished; सोमः (somaḥ) - Soma (the oblation or Soma juice); स (sa) - he (that); च (ca) - and; गोषु (goṣu) - in cows; प्रतिष्ठितः (pratiṣṭhitaḥ) - situated; सर्वे (sarve) - all; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; प्रमोदन्ते (pramodante) - rejoice; पूर्ववृत्ताः (pūrvavṛttāḥ) - those having acted previously (in former times); ततः (tataḥ) - therefrom; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures;]
(By sacrifices is nourished Soma; and he is situated in cows. All gods rejoice, those having acted previously; therefrom, the creatures (arise).)
Through sacrifices, Soma is nourished, and he is established in cows. All the gods rejoice, as did those who came before; from that, creatures are born. (13-76-14)
एतान्येव तु भूतानि प्राक्रोशन्वृत्तिकाङ्क्षया। वृत्तिदं चान्वपद्यन्त तृषिताः पितृमातृवत् ॥१३-७६-१५॥
etānyeva tu bhūtāni prākrośan vṛttikāṅkṣayā। vṛttidaṃ ca anvapadyanta tṛṣitāḥ pitṛmātṛvat ॥13-76-15॥
[एतानि एव (etāni eva) - these indeed; तु (tu) - but; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - creatures; प्राक्रोशन् (prākrośan) - shouted out; वृत्तिकाङ्क्षया (vṛttikāṅkṣayā) - with desire for livelihood; वृत्तिदम् (vṛttidam) - provider of livelihood; च (ca) - and; अन्वपद्यन्त (anvapadyanta) - followed after; तृषिताः (tṛṣitāḥ) - thirsty; पितृमातृवत् (pitṛmātṛvat) - like (their) father and mother;]
(These indeed but creatures shouted out with desire for livelihood. Provider of livelihood and followed after, thirsty, like father and mother.)
But these very creatures cried out, longing for livelihood. Thirsty, they followed after the provider of livelihood as if (he were) their father and mother. (13-76-15)
इतीदं मनसा गत्वा प्रजासर्गार्थमात्मनः। प्रजापतिर्बलाधानममृतं प्रापिबत्तदा ॥१३-७६-१६॥
itīdaṃ manasā gatvā prajāsargārthamātmanaḥ। prajāpatir balādhānam amṛtaṃ prāpibat tadā॥13-76-16॥
[इति (iti) - thus; इदं (idaṃ) - this; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; प्रजा-सर्ग-अर्थम् (prajā-sarga-artham) - for the sake of creation of beings; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself; प्रजापति: (prajāpatiḥ) - Prajapati; बल-अधानम् (bala-adhānam) - imparting of strength; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar (of immortality); प्रापिबत् (prāpibat) - drank; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus, having gone to this (state) by mind, for the sake of creation of beings, of himself, Prajapati then drank the nectar (of immortality), the imparting of strength.)
Thus, Prajapati, having mentally attained this for the sake of creation, then drank the nectar of strength for himself. (13-76-16)
स गतस्तस्य तृप्तिं तु गन्धं सुरभिमुद्गिरन्। ददर्शोद्गारसंवृत्तां सुरभिं मुखजां सुताम् ॥१३-७६-१७॥
sa gatastasya tṛptiṁ tu gandhaṁ surabhimudgiran। dadarśodgārasaṁvṛttāṁ surabhiṁ mukhajāṁ sutām ॥13-76-17॥
[स (sa) - he; गतः (gataḥ) - having gone; तस्य (tasya) - of him; तृप्तिं (tṛptim) - satisfaction; तु (tu) - but; गन्धं (gandham) - fragrance; सुरभिम् (surabhim) - pleasant-smelling; उद्गिरन् (udgiran) - emitting; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; उद्गारसंवृत्तां (udgārasaṁvṛttām) - produced from eructation; सुरभिम् (surabhim) - fragrant; मुखजां (mukhajām) - born from the mouth; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter;]
(He, having gone, but satisfaction of him, emitting fragrant scent, he saw, produced from eructation, fragrant, born from the mouth, daughter.)
He, having gone and emitting a pleasant fragrance, saw his daughter, who was born from his mouth and had become fragrant from eructation, as a result of his satisfaction. (13-76-17)
सासृजत्सौरभेयीस्तु सुरभिर्लोकमातरः। सुवर्णवर्णाः कपिलाः प्रजानां वृत्तिधेनवः ॥१३-७६-१८॥
sāsṛjatsaura bheyīstu surabhirlokamātaraḥ। suvarṇavarṇāḥ kapilāḥ prajānāṃ vṛttidhenavaḥ ॥13-76-18॥

(Surabhi created, indeed, cows born of Surabhi, mothers of the world; of golden color, tawny, cows of sustenance for beings.)
Surabhi created the cows born of herself, who are mothers of the world; they are golden in color, tawny, the nourishing cows for all beings. (13-76-18)
तासाममृतवर्णानां क्षरन्तीनां समन्ततः। बभूवामृतजः फेनः स्रवन्तीनामिवोर्मिजः ॥१३-७६-१९॥
tāsām amṛta-varṇānām kṣarantīnām samantataḥ। babhūva amṛta-jaḥ phenaḥ sravantīnām iva ūrmi-jaḥ॥13-76-19॥
[तासाम् (tāsām) - of them; अमृतवर्णानाम् (amṛta-varṇānām) - of nectar-colored; क्षरन्तीनाम् (kṣarantīnām) - of those flowing; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; बभूव (babhūva) - arose; अमृतजः (amṛta-jaḥ) - born of nectar; फेनः (phenaḥ) - foam; स्रवन्तीनाम् (sravantīnām) - of the streaming ones; इव (iva) - like; उर्मिजः (ūrmi-jaḥ) - born of a wave;]
(Of them, of nectar-colored (ones), of those flowing on all sides, there arose foam born of nectar, like foam born of a wave of the streaming ones.)
Foam born of nectar arose from those nectar-colored and flowing ones on all sides, like the foam produced by the waves of flowing waters. (13-76-19)
स वत्समुखविभ्रष्टो भवस्य भुवि तिष्ठतः। शिरस्यवाप तत्क्रुद्धः स तदोदैक्षत प्रभुः ॥ ललाटप्रभवेनाक्ष्णा रोहिणीः प्रदहन्निव ॥१३-७६-२०॥
sa vatsamukha-vibhraṣṭaḥ bhavasya bhuvi tiṣṭhataḥ। śirasi avāpat tat kruddhaḥ sa tat udaiākṣata prabhuḥ॥ lalāṭa-prabhavena akṣṇā rohiṇīḥ pradahann iva॥13-76-20॥
[स (sa) - he; वत्समुखविभ्रष्टः (vatsamukha-vibhraṣṭaḥ) - fallen from a calf’s mouth; भवस्य (bhavasya) - of Bhava (Śiva); भुवि (bhuvi) - upon the earth; तिष्ठतः (tiṣṭhataḥ) - standing; शिरस्यवाप (śirasi avāpat) - fell on the head; तत्क्रुद्धः (tat kruddhaḥ) - then, angered; स (sa) - he; तद् (tat) - it; उदैक्षत (udaiākṣata) - looked up; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the Lord; ललाटप्रभवेनाक्ष्णा (lalāṭa-prabhavena akṣṇā) - with an eye come forth from the forehead; रोहिणीः (rohiṇīḥ) - stars (wives of the Moon); प्रदहन्निव (pradahann iva) - as if burning;]
(He, fallen from the calf’s mouth, of Bhava standing upon the earth, fell on the head; then, angered, he, the Lord, looked up at it. With the eye born from the forehead, as if burning the Rohiṇīs.)
He, fallen from the mouth of the calf, on the head of Bhava (Śiva) standing on the earth, then in anger, the Lord looked up at it; with his eye born of the forehead, he seemed to burn the Rohiṇīs (wives of the Moon). (13-76-20)
तत्तेजस्तु ततो रौद्रं कपिला गा विशां पते। नानावर्णत्वमनयन्मेघानिव दिवाकरः ॥१३-७६-२१॥
tat-tejas tu tato raudraṁ kapilā gā viśāṁ pate | nānā-varṇatvam anayat meghān iva divākaraḥ ॥13-76-21॥
[तत् (tat) - that; तेजः (tejas) - splendor; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; रौद्रं (raudram) - fierce; कपिला (kapilā) - tawny; गा: (gāḥ) - cows; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; नाना (nānā) - various; वर्णत्वम् (varṇatvam) - color-ness; अनयत् (anayat) - brought to, led into; मेघान् (meghān) - clouds; इव (iva) - like; दिवाकरः (divākaraḥ) - the sun;]
(That splendor but then fierce tawny cows O lord of men various color-ness brought like clouds the sun.)
But that splendor then brought the tawny cows, O lord of men, into various colors, like the sun (does) to clouds. (13-76-21)
यास्तु तस्मादपक्रम्य सोममेवाभिसंश्रिताः। यथोत्पन्नाः स्ववर्णस्थास्ता नीता नान्यवर्णताम् ॥१३-७६-२२॥
yāstu tasmād apakramya somam evābhisaṁśritāḥ। yathotpannāḥ svavarṇasthās tā nītā nānyavarṇatām॥13-76-22॥
[याः (yāḥ) - who (feminine plural); तु (tu) - but; indeed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; from him; अपक्रम्य (apakramya) - having withdrawn; having departed; सोमम् (somam) - Soma (the ritual drink, or the deity Soma); एव (eva) - indeed; only; अभिसंश्रिताः (abhisaṁśritāḥ) - having resorted to; having taken refuge in; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; उत्पन्नाः (utpannāḥ) - born; arisen; स्ववर्णस्थाः (svavarṇasthāḥ) - remaining in their own class; situated in their own caste; ता (tā) - they (feminine plural); नीता (nītā) - have been led; have been brought; न (na) - not; अन्यवर्णताम् (anyavarṇatām) - to another class; to another caste;]
(But those who, having withdrawn from him, resorted only to Soma, just as they were born remaining in their own class, they have not been led to another class.)
But those who, having withdrawn from him, took refuge solely in Soma, have remained in their own class as they were born and have not been brought to another caste. (13-76-22)
अथ क्रुद्धं महादेवं प्रजापतिरभाषत। अमृतेनावसिक्तस्त्वं नोच्छिष्टं विद्यते गवाम् ॥१३-७६-२३॥
atha kruddhaṃ mahādevaṃ prajāpati rabhāṣata। amṛtenāvasiktas tvaṃ nocchiṣṭaṃ vidyate gavām॥13-76-23॥
[अथ (atha) - then; क्रुद्धं (kruddham) - angry; महादेवं (mahādevaṃ) - Mahādeva; प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - Prajāpati; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke; अमृतेन (amṛtena) - with amṛta (nectar of immortality); आवसिक्तः (āvasiktaḥ) - anointed; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; न (na) - not; उच्छिष्टं (ucchiṣṭam) - remnants; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; गवाम् (gavām) - of the cows;]
(Then, angry Mahādeva, Prajāpati spoke. With amṛta anointed you, not remnants exist of the cows.)
Then Prajāpati spoke to Mahādeva, who was angry: "Since you have been anointed with amṛta, there are no remnants left from the cows." (13-76-23)
यथा ह्यमृतमादाय सोमो विष्यन्दते पुनः। तथा क्षीरं क्षरन्त्येता रोहिण्योऽमृतसम्भवाः ॥१३-७६-२४॥
yathā hy amṛtam ādāya somo viṣyandate punaḥ। tathā kṣīraṃ kṣaranty etā rohiṇyo 'mṛta-sambhavāḥ॥13-76-24॥
[यथा (hy) (yathā (hi)) - just as (indeed); अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; सोमः (somaḥ) - Soma (the moon; or the Soma plant/deity); विष्यन्दते (viṣyandate) - drips; flows out; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तथा (tathā) - so; thus; क्षीरम् (kṣīram) - milk; क्षरन्ति (kṣaranti) - flow; drop; एता (etāḥ) - these (feminine, plural); रोहिण्यः (rohiṇyaḥ) - Rohinī cows (name for a certain group of cows); अमृतसम्भवाः (amṛta-sambhavāḥ) - born of nectar; of nectar-origin;]
(Just as indeed, having taken nectar, Soma flows out again; so milk flows, these Rohini cows of nectar-origin.)
Just as Soma, having absorbed nectar, flows forth again, so these Rohini cows of nectar origin produce milk. (13-76-24)
न दुष्यत्यनिलो नाग्निर्न सुवर्णं न चोदधिः। नामृतेनामृतं पीतं वत्सपीता न वत्सला ॥१३-७६-२५॥
na duṣyaty anilo nāgnir na suvarṇaṃ na codadhiḥ. nāmṛtenāmṛtaṃ pītaṃ vatsapītā na vatsalā ॥13-76-25॥
[न (na) - not; दुष्यति (duṣyati) - is corrupted; अनिलः (anilaḥ) - wind; न (na) - not; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; न (na) - not; सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; उदधिः (udadhiḥ) - ocean; न (na) - not; अमृतेन (amṛtena) - by nectar; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; पीतम् (pītam) - drunk; वत्सपीता (vatsapītā) - drunk by calves; न (na) - not; वत्सला (vatsalā) - the loving cow;]
(Not is corrupted the wind, not fire, not gold, not and the ocean. Not by nectar, nectar drunk, (nor is) drunk by calves the loving cow.)
The wind is not corrupted, nor fire, nor gold, nor the ocean. Nectar is not changed by nectar, nor does the cow become less loving when her milk is drunk by the calves. (13-76-25)
इमाँल्लोकान्भरिष्यन्ति हविषा प्रस्नवेन च। आसामैश्वर्यमश्नीहि सर्वामृतमयं शुभम् ॥१३-७६-२६॥
imāṁl lokān bhariṣyanti haviṣā prasnavena ca। āsām aiśvaryam aśnīhi sarvam ṛtamayaṁ śubham॥13-76-26॥
[इमाँल्लोकान् (imān lokān) - these worlds; भरिष्यन्ति (bhariṣyanti) - will sustain; हविषा (haviṣā) - with the oblation; प्रस्नवेन (prasnavena) - with the residue (of the offering); च (ca) - and; आसाम् (āsām) - of these (offerings); ऐश्वर्यम् (aiśvaryam) - prosperity; अश्नीहि (aśnīhi) - enjoy; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अमृतमयम् (amṛtamayam) - composed of nectar (immortality); शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious;]
(These worlds will sustain with the oblation and with the residue. Enjoy the prosperity of these (offerings), all composed of nectar and auspicious.)

वृषभं च ददौ तस्मै सह ताभिः प्रजापतिः। प्रसादयामास मनस्तेन रुद्रस्य भारत ॥१३-७६-२७॥
vṛṣabhaṃ ca dadau tasmai saha tābhiḥ prajāpatiḥ। prasādayāmāsa manas tena rudrasya bhārata॥13-76-27॥
[वृषभं (vṛṣabham) - bull; (accusative singular); च (ca) - and; ददौ (dadau) - (he) gave; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; सह (saha) - together with; ताभिः (tābhiḥ) - with those (women); प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - Prajāpati; (nominative singular); प्रसादयामास (prasādayāmāsa) - caused to be pleased; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; तेन (tena) - by that; रुद्रस्य (rudrasya) - of Rudra; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Bull and (he) gave to him together with those (women), Prajāpati; caused to be pleased mind by that of Rudra, O Bhārata.)
Prajāpati gave a bull to him along with those women. By that, he caused Rudra's mind to be pleased, O Bhārata. (13-76-27)
प्रीतश्चापि महादेवश्चकार वृषभं तदा। ध्वजं च वाहनं चैव तस्मात्स वृषभध्वजः ॥१३-७६-२८॥
prītaś cāpi mahādevaś cakāra vṛṣabhaṃ tadā। dhvajaṃ ca vāhanaṃ caiva tasmāt sa vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ ॥13-76-28॥
[प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahadeva; चकार (cakāra) - made; वृषभं (vṛṣabham) - the Bull; तदा (tadā) - at that time; ध्वजं (dhvajam) - banner; च (ca) - and; वाहनं (vāhanam) - vehicle; चैव (ca eva) - and indeed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सः (saḥ) - he; वृषभध्वजः (vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ) - Bull-bannered;]
(Pleased and also Mahadeva made the Bull at that time, and the banner and the vehicle indeed; therefore, he (is) Bull-bannered.)
Being pleased, Mahadeva at that time made the Bull, both as his banner and his vehicle; therefore, he is called the Bull-bannered one. (13-76-28)
ततो देवैर्महादेवस्तदा पशुपतिः कृतः। ईश्वरः स गवां मध्ये वृषाङ्क इति चोच्यते ॥१३-७६-२९॥
tato devair mahādevas tadā paśupatiḥ kṛtaḥ। īśvaraḥ sa gavāṃ madhye vṛṣāṅka iti cocyate ॥13-76-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahadeva; तदा (tadā) - at that time; पशुपतिः (paśupatiḥ) - Pashupati; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - the Lord; स (sa) - he; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; वृषाङ्क (vṛṣāṅka) - Vṛṣāṅka (one bearing the bull mark); इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(Then by the gods Mahadeva at that time (was) made Pashupati. The Lord, he, among cows, Vṛṣāṅka, thus and is called.)
Then Mahadeva was made Pashupati by the gods at that time. The Lord, among cows, is also called Vṛṣāṅka. (13-76-29)
एवमव्यग्रवर्णानां कपिलानां महौजसाम्। प्रदाने प्रथमः कल्पः सर्वासामेव कीर्तितः ॥१३-७६-३०॥
evam-avyagravarṇānāṃ kapilānāṃ mahojasām। pradāne prathamaḥ kalpaḥ sarvāsāmeva kīrtitaḥ ॥13-76-30॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; अव्यग्रवर्णानाम् (avyagravarṇānām) - of those with undisturbed color; कपिलानाम् (kapilānām) - of tawny ones; महौजसाम् (mahojasām) - of great energy; प्रदाने (pradāne) - in the offering; प्रथमः (prathamaḥ) - the first; कल्पः (kalpaḥ) - rite; सर्वासाम् (sarvāsām) - of all; एव (eva) - indeed; कीर्तितः (kīrtitaḥ) - is stated;]
(Thus, of those with undisturbed color, of tawny ones of great energy, in the offering, the first rite of all indeed is stated.)
Thus, regarding the tawny beings of unagitated color and great energy, in the offering, the first rite for all has been declared. (13-76-30)
लोकज्येष्ठा लोकवृत्तिप्रवृत्ता; रुद्रोपेताः सोमविष्यन्दभूताः। सौम्याः पुण्याः कामदाः प्राणदाश्च; गा वै दत्त्वा सर्वकामप्रदः स्यात् ॥१३-७६-३१॥
lokajyeṣṭhā lokavṛttipravṛttā; rudropetāḥ somaviṣyandabhūtāḥ. saumyāḥ puṇyāḥ kāmadāḥ prāṇadāśca; gā vai dattvā sarvakāmapradaḥ syāt ॥13-76-31॥
[लोकज्येष्ठाः (lokajyeṣṭhāḥ) - the eldest among people; लोकवृत्तिप्रवृत्ताः (lokavṛttipravṛttāḥ) - engaged in the way of the world; रुद्रोपेताः (rudropetāḥ) - associated with Rudra; सोमविष्यन्दभूताः (somaviṣyandabhūtāḥ) - having the essence of Soma (nectar); सौम्याः (saumyāḥ) - gentle; पुण्याः (puṇyāḥ) - auspicious; कामदाः (kāmadāḥ) - givers of desires; प्राणदाः च (prāṇadāḥ ca) - and givers of life; गा (gā) - cows; वै (vai) - indeed; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; सर्वकामप्रदः (sarvakāmapradaḥ) - granter of all desires; स्यात् (syāt) - one becomes;]
(The eldest among people, engaged in the way of the world, associated with Rudra, having the essence of Soma, gentle, auspicious, givers of desires and also givers of life; having given cows indeed, one becomes a granter of all desires.)
Those who are eldest among people, following the worldly way, associated with Rudra and possessing the essence of Soma, gentle and auspicious, givers of desires and life—having truly given cows, one attains the fulfillment of all desires. (13-76-31)
इमं गवां प्रभवविधानमुत्तमं; पठन्सदा शुचिरतिमङ्गलप्रियः। विमुच्यते कलिकलुषेण मानवः; प्रियं सुतान्पशुधनमाप्नुयात्तथा ॥१३-७६-३२॥
imaṁ gavāṁ prabhavavidhānamuttamaṁ; paṭhansadā śuciratimaṅgalapriyaḥ। vimucyate kalikaluṣeṇa mānavaḥ; priyaṁ sutāmpaśudhanamāpnuyāttathā ॥13-76-32॥
[इमं (imaṁ) - this; गवां (gavāṁ) - of cows; प्रभव-विधानम् (prabhava-vidhānam) - origin-procedure; उत्तमं (uttamaṁ) - excellent; पठन् (paṭhan) - reciting; सदा (sadā) - always; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; अति-मङ्गल-प्रियः (ati-maṅgala-priyaḥ) - very-auspicious-loving; विमुच्यते (vimucyate) - is freed; कलि-कलुषेण (kali-kaluṣeṇa) - by the impurity of Kali age; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a human; प्रियं (priyaṁ) - dear; सुतान् (sutān) - sons; पशु-धनम् (paśu-dhanam) - cattle and wealth; आप्नुयात् तथा (āpnuyāt tathā) - attains also;]
(This excellent origin-procedure of cows, reciting always, pure, very fond of auspiciousness, is freed by the impurity of Kali age, a human attains dear sons and cattle-wealth also.)
Whoever, pure and very fond of auspiciousness, always recites this excellent origin-procedure of cows is freed from the impurity of the Kali age; he also attains dear sons and cattle-wealth. (13-76-32)
हव्यं कव्यं तर्पणं शान्तिकर्म; यानं वासो वृद्धबालस्य पुष्टिम्। एतान्सर्वान्गोप्रदाने गुणान्वै; दाता राजन्नाप्नुयाद्वै सदैव ॥१३-७६-३३॥
havyaṁ kavyaṁ tarpaṇaṁ śāntikarma; yānaṁ vāso vṛddhabālasya puṣṭim। etānsarvāngo-pradāne guṇānvai; dātā rājannāpnuyādvai sadaiva ॥13-76-33॥
[हव्यं (havyaṁ) - oblation (offered to gods); कव्यं (kavyaṁ) - offering for ancestors; तर्पणं (tarpaṇaṁ) - satisfaction (of manes); शान्तिकर्म (śāntikarma) - pacificatory rite; यानं (yānaṁ) - vehicle; वासो (vāso) - clothing; वृद्धबालस्य (vṛddhabālasya) - of the old and young; पुष्टिम् (puṣṭim) - nourishment; एतान् (etān) - these; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; गोप्रदाने (go-pradāne) - in the (act of) giving of cows; गुणान् (guṇān) - virtues; वै (vai) - indeed; दाता (dātā) - the giver; राजन् (rājan) - O king; आप्नुयात् (āpnuyāt) - obtains; वै (vai) - indeed; सदैव (sadaiva) - always;]
(Oblation (to gods), offering for ancestors, satisfaction (of manes), pacificatory rite, vehicle, clothing, nourishment of the old and young—these all, O king, virtues in the giving of cows indeed, the giver indeed always obtains.)
O king, the giver of cows indeed always attains all these virtues: oblation (to gods), offering for ancestors, satisfaction of the manes, peace-bringing rites, a vehicle, clothing, nourishment of the old and the young. (13-76-33)

Then, having heard the grandsire's words, King Ajamiḍha, together with his brothers, Pārtha gave cows, which had golden and bronze milk-pails, to the best of the Brāhmaṇas. (13-76-34)
तथैव तेभ्योऽभिददौ द्विजेभ्यो; गवां सहस्राणि शतानि चैव। यज्ञान्समुद्दिश्य च दक्षिणार्थे; लोकान्विजेतुं परमां च कीर्तिम् ॥१३-७६-३५॥

(In the same way, to them he gave to the twice-born; of cows, thousands, hundreds, and indeed. Sacrifices, having as reference and for the sake of gifts; worlds to conquer and supreme fame.)
