Yudhiṣṭhira said.
उक्तं पितामहेनेदं गवां दानमनुत्तमम्। विशेषेण नरेन्द्राणामिति धर्ममवेक्षताम् ॥१३-८३-१॥
uktaṃ pitāmahena idaṃ gavāṃ dānam anuttamam। viśeṣeṇa narendrāṇām iti dharmam avekṣatām ॥13-83-1॥
[उक्तं (uktaṃ) - said; पितामहेन (pitāmahena) - by the grandsire; इदम् (idaṃ) - this; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; दानम् (dānam) - gift; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; नरेन्द्राणाम् (narendrāṇām) - of kings; इति (iti) - thus; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; अवेक्षताम् (avekṣatām) - let them observe;]
(Said by the grandsire, this unsurpassed gift of cows, especially of kings, thus—let them observe the duty.)
The grandsire declared this unsurpassed gift of cows—especially for kings—as a duty; let them observe this dharma. (13-83-1)
राज्यं हि सततं दुःखमाश्रमाश्च सुदुर्विदाः। परिवारेण वै दुःखं दुर्धरं चाकृतात्मभिः ॥ भूयिष्ठं च नरेन्द्राणां विद्यते न शुभा गतिः ॥१३-८३-२॥
rājyaṃ hi satataṃ duḥkham āśramāś ca sudurvidāḥ। parivāreṇa vai duḥkhaṃ durdharaṃ cākṛtātmabhiḥ॥ bhūyiṣṭhaṃ ca narendrāṇāṃ vidyate na śubhā gatiḥ॥13-83-2॥
[राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; हि (hi) - indeed; सततं (satataṃ) - constantly; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; आश्रमाः (āśramāḥ) - life-stages; च (ca) - and; सुदुर्विदाः (sudurvidāḥ) - very hard to discern; परिवारेण (parivāreṇa) - by family; वै (vai) - indeed; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - suffering; दुर्धरं (durdharaṃ) - hard to bear; च (ca) - and; अकृतात्मभिः (akṛtātmabhiḥ) - by those without self-control; भूयिष्ठं (bhūyiṣṭhaṃ) - for the most part; च (ca) - and; नरेन्द्राणां (narendrāṇāṃ) - of kings; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; न (na) - not; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious; गतिः (gatiḥ) - path;]
(Kingdom indeed constantly suffering; life-stages and very hard to discern. By family indeed suffering hard to bear and by those without self-control. For the most part and of kings exists not auspicious path.)
Rulership is indeed always suffering; the life-stages are also very difficult to discern. Family brings suffering that is hard to endure for those lacking self-control. For most kings, there does not exist an auspicious path. (13-83-2)
पूयन्ते तेऽत्र नियतं प्रयच्छन्तो वसुन्धराम्। पूर्वं च कथिता धर्मास्त्वया मे कुरुनन्दन ॥१३-८३-३॥
pūyante te 'tra niyataṃ prayacchanto vasundharām। pūrvaṃ ca kathitā dharmās tvayā me kurunandana ॥13-83-3॥
[पूयन्ते (pūyante) - are purified; ते (te) - they; अत्र (atra) - here; नियतं (niyataṃ) - certainly; प्रयच्छन्तः (prayacchantaḥ) - giving; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - earth; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - previously; च (ca) - and; कथिताः (kathitāḥ) - have been spoken; धर्माः (dharmāḥ) - dharmas; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मे (me) - to me; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus;]
(Are purified they here certainly giving earth. Previously and have been spoken dharmas by you to me, O delight of the Kurus.)
Here, those who give the earth are certainly purified. Formerly, the dharmas have been spoken to me by you, O delight of the Kurus. (13-83-3)
एवमेव गवामुक्तं प्रदानं ते नृगेण ह। ऋषिणा नाचिकेतेन पूर्वमेव निदर्शितम् ॥१३-८३-४॥
evam eva gavām uktaṃ pradānaṃ te nṛgeṇa ha। ṛṣiṇā nāciketena pūrvam eva nidarśitam ॥13-83-4॥
[एवम् एव (evam eva) - in this very way; thus; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - was said; प्रदानं (pradānaṃ) - giving; donation; ते (te) - by you; नृगेण (nṛgeṇa) - by Nṛga; ह (ha) - indeed; ऋषिणा (ṛṣiṇā) - by the sage; नाचिकेतेन (nāciketena) - by Naciketas; पूर्वम् एव (pūrvam eva) - before indeed; निदर्शितम् (nidarśitam) - was demonstrated;]
(Thus only the donation of cows was said, by you, by Nṛga indeed. By the sage Naciketas before indeed (it) was demonstrated.)
In just this way, the giving of cows was spoken of—by you, by Nṛga indeed. Previously, the sage Naciketas had also demonstrated this. (13-83-4)
वेदोपनिषदे चैव सर्वकर्मसु दक्षिणा। सर्वक्रतुषु चोद्दिष्टं भूमिर्गावोऽथ काञ्चनम् ॥१३-८३-५॥
vedopaniṣade caiva sarvakarmasu dakṣiṇā। sarvakratuṣu coddiṣṭaṃ bhūmirgāvo'tha kāñcanam ॥13-83-5॥
[वेदोपनिषदे (vedopaniṣade) - in the Vedas and Upaniṣads; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वकर्मसु (sarvakarmasu) - in all rites; दक्षिणा (dakṣiṇā) - gift (offering); सर्वक्रतुषु (sarvakratuṣu) - in all sacrifices; च (ca) - and; उद्दिष्टं (uddiṣṭam) - prescribed; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - land; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; अथ (atha) - or; काञ्चनम् (kāñcanam) - gold;]
(In the Vedas and Upaniṣads and indeed in all rites, the gift; in all sacrifices and prescribed: land, cows or gold.)
Indeed, as declared in the Vedas and Upaniṣads and in all rites, the prescribed offering in all sacrifices is land, cows, or gold. (13-83-5)
तत्र श्रुतिस्तु परमा सुवर्णं दक्षिणेति वै। एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं पितामह यथातथम् ॥१३-८३-६॥
tatra śrutis tu paramā suvarṇaṃ dakṣiṇeti vai। etad icchāmy ahaṃ śrotuṃ pitāmaha yathā-tatham ॥13-83-6॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; श्रुतिः (śrutiḥ) - scripture; तु (tu) - but; परमा (paramā) - supreme; सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; दक्षिणेति (dakṣiṇeti) - as 'dakṣiṇā'; वै (vai) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; अहम् (aham) - I; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire; यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - truly;]
(There, but scripture (śruti) supreme gold as 'dakṣiṇā' indeed. This I wish I to hear, O grandsire, as truly.)
But there, the supreme scripture indeed says gold is called 'dakṣiṇā'. I wish to hear this from you, O grandsire, just as it is. (13-83-6)
किं सुवर्णं कथं जातं कस्मिन्काले किमात्मकम्। किं दानं किं फलं चैव कस्माच्च परमुच्यते ॥१३-८३-७॥
kiṃ suvarṇaṃ kathaṃ jātaṃ kasminkāle kimātmakam। kiṃ dānaṃ kiṃ phalaṃ caiva kasmācca paramucyate ॥13-83-7॥
[किं (kiṃ) - what; सुवर्णं (suvarṇam) - gold; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; जातं (jātaṃ) - born; कस्मिन्काले (kasminkāle) - in which time; किमात्मकम् (kimātmakam) - of what nature; किं (kiṃ) - what; दानं (dānaṃ) - gift; किं (kiṃ) - what; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - from what; च (ca) - and; परम् (param) - highest; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said;]
(What (is) gold, how (is it) born, in which time, of what nature; what (is) gift, what (is) fruit indeed, and from what is the highest said;)
What is gold, how was it born, at what time, of what nature is it? What is the gift, what is its fruit, and from what is the highest said to arise? (13-83-7)
कस्माद्दानं सुवर्णस्य पूजयन्ति मनीषिणः। कस्माच्च दक्षिणार्थं तद्यज्ञकर्मसु शस्यते ॥१३-८३-८॥
kasmāddānaṁ suvarṇasya pūjayanti manīṣiṇaḥ। kasmācca dakṣiṇārthaṁ tadyajñakarmasu śasyate ॥13-83-8॥
[कस्मात् (kasmāt) - for what reason; दानम् (dānam) - gift; सुवर्णस्य (suvarṇasya) - of gold; पूजयन्ति (pūjayanti) - they honor; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - wise ones; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - for what reason; च (ca) - and; दक्षिणार्थम् (dakṣiṇārtham) - for fee/offering; तत् (tat) - that; यज्ञकर्मसु (yajñakarmasu) - in sacrificial rites; शस्यते (śasyate) - is praised;]
(For what reason do the wise honor the gift of gold; and for what reason is that praised as a fee in sacrificial rites?)
Why do the wise honor the giving of gold, and why is it praised as an offering in sacrificial rites? (13-83-8)
कस्माच्च पावनं श्रेष्ठं भूमेर्गोभ्यश्च काञ्चनम्। परमं दक्षिणार्थे च तद्ब्रवीहि पितामह ॥१३-८३-९॥
kasmāc ca pāvanaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ bhūmer gobhyaś ca kāñcanam। paramaṃ dakṣiṇārthe ca tad bravīhi pitāmaha ॥13-83-9॥
[कस्मात् (kasmāt) - from what; च (ca) - and; पावनं (pāvanaṃ) - purifying; श्रेष्ठं (śreṣṭham) - best; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - than earth; गोभ्यः (gobhyaḥ) - than cows; च (ca) - and; काञ्चनम् (kāñcanam) - gold; परमं (paramam) - supreme; दक्षिणार्थे (dakṣiṇārthe) - for the purpose of donation; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - speak; पितामह (pitāmaha) - grandfather;]
(From what, and purifying best than earth, than cows, and gold, supreme for the purpose of donation, and that speak, grandfather.)
Grandfather, tell me what is the most purifying and the best—superior to earth and cows—as gold is, and what is the supreme for the purpose of donation. (13-83-9)

Bhīṣma said.
शृणु राजन्नवहितो बहुकारणविस्तरम्। जातरूपसमुत्पत्तिमनुभूतं च यन्मया ॥१३-८३-१०॥
śṛṇu rājann avahito bahu-kāraṇa-vistaram । jātarūpa-samutpattim anubhūtaṃ ca yan mayā ॥13-83-10॥
[शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अवहितः (avahitaḥ) - attentive; बहुकारणविस्तरम् (bahu-kāraṇa-vistaram) - the many-cause-expansion; जातरूपसमुत्पत्तिम् (jātarūpa-samutpattim) - the gold-origin; अनुभूतं (anubhūtam) - experienced; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Hear, O king, attentively, the many-cause expansion; the gold-origin, experienced and which by me.)
O king, listen attentively to the detailed description of the many causes and to the account of the origin of gold as I have experienced it. (13-83-10)
पिता मम महातेजाः शन्तनुर्निधनं गतः। तस्य दित्सुरहं श्राद्धं गङ्गाद्वारमुपागमम् ॥१३-८३-११॥
pitā mama mahātejāḥ śantanuḥ nidhanaṃ gataḥ। tasya ditsur ahaṃ śrāddhaṃ gaṅgādvāram upāgamam॥13-83-11॥
[पिता (pitā) - father; मम (mama) - my; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; शन्तनुः (śantanuḥ) - Śantanu; निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - death; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone; तस्य (tasya) - for him; दित्सुः (ditsur) - desiring to give; अहम् (aham) - I; श्राद्धं (śrāddham) - funeral rite; गङ्गाद्वारम् (gaṅgādvāram) - Gangadvara; उपागमम् (upāgamam) - I approached;]
(Father my of great splendor Śantanu death has gone. For him desiring to give I funeral rite Gangadvara I approached.)
My father, the greatly radiant Śantanu, has passed away. To perform his funeral rites, I went to Gangadvara. (13-83-11)
तत्रागम्य पितुः पुत्र श्राद्धकर्म समारभम्। माता मे जाह्नवी चैव साहाय्यमकरोत्तदा ॥१३-८३-१२॥
tatrāgamya pituḥ putra śrāddhakarma samārabham। mātā me jāhnavī caiva sāhāyyamakarottadā ॥13-83-12॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; पितुः (pituḥ) - of my father; पुत्र (putra) - O son; श्राद्धकर्म (śrāddhakarma) - rite for ancestors; समारभम् (samārabham) - I commenced; माता (mātā) - my mother; मे (me) - my; जाह्नवी (jāhnavī) - Jāhnavī (the Ganges); चैव (ca eva) - and indeed; साहाय्यम् (sāhāyyam) - assistance; अकरोत् (akarot) - (she) did; तदा (tadā) - at that time;]
(There having come, of my father, O son, the śrāddha rite I commenced. My mother, Jāhnavī, and indeed (she) assistance did at that time.)
Having come there, O son, I began the śrāddha rite for my father; my mother Jāhnavī (the Ganges), indeed, assisted me at that time. (13-83-12)
ततोऽग्रतस्तपःसिद्धानुपवेश्य बहूनृषीन्। तोयप्रदानात्प्रभृति कार्याण्यहमथारभम् ॥१३-८३-१३॥
tato'gratas tapaḥ-siddhān upaveśya bahūn ṛṣīn। toya-pradānāt prabhṛti kāryāṇi aham atha ārabham ॥13-83-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; तपःसिद्धान् (tapaḥ-siddhān) - ascetics who have attained perfection; accomplished through penance; उपवेश्य (upaveśya) - having seated; बहून् (bahūn) - many; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; तोयप्रदानात् (toya-pradānāt) - from water offering; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - beginning from; starting with; कार्याणि (kāryāṇi) - duties; actions; अहम् (aham) - I; अथ (atha) - then; आरभम् (ārabham) - began; undertook;]
(Then, in front (of me), having seated the ascetics who have attained perfection, the many sages, beginning from the offering of water, the duties I then began.)
Then, having seated in front of me the many perfected ascetics and sages, I began the prescribed duties starting with the offering of water. (13-83-13)
तत्समाप्य यथोद्दिष्टं पूर्वकर्म समाहितः। दातुं निर्वपणं सम्यग्यथावदहमारभम् ॥१३-८३-१४॥
tatsamāpya yathoddiṣṭaṃ pūrvakarma samāhitaḥ। dātuṃ nirvapaṇaṃ samyagyathāvadahamārabham ॥13-83-14॥
[तत् (tat) - that; समाप्य (samāpya) - having completed; यथोद्दिष्टं (yathoddiṣṭam) - as instructed; पूर्वकर्म (pūrvakarma) - previous ritual; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - having concentrated; दातुं (dātum) - to give; निर्वपणं (nirvapaṇam) - offering (oblation); सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; यथावद् (yathāvad) - as is proper; अहम् (aham) - I; आरभम् (ārabham) - began;]
(That, having completed as instructed the previous ritual, having concentrated, to give the offering properly as is proper, I began.)
Having completed the previous ritual exactly as instructed and with concentration, I began to properly offer the oblation as was appropriate. (13-83-14)
ततस्तं दर्भविन्यासं भित्त्वा सुरुचिराङ्गदः। प्रलम्बाभरणो बाहुरुदतिष्ठद्विशां पते ॥१३-८३-१५॥
tatastaṃ darbhavinyāsaṃ bhittvā surucirāṅgadaḥ. pralambābharaṇo bāhurudatiṣṭhadviśāṃ pate ॥13-83-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तं (taṃ) - that; दर्भविन्यासं (darbhavinyāsam) - the arrangement of darbha grass; भित्त्वा (bhittvā) - having pierced; सुरुचिराङ्गदः (surucirāṅgadaḥ) - with beautiful armlets; प्रलम्बाभरणः (pralambābharaṇaḥ) - adorned with pendant ornaments; बाहुः (bāhuḥ) - arm; उदतिष्ठत् (udatiṣṭhat) - arose; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of the people;]
(Then that arrangement of darbha grass having pierced, with beautiful armlets and adorned with pendant ornaments, an arm arose, O lord of the people.)
Then, O lord of the people, after piercing that arrangement of darbha grass, an arm adorned with beautiful armlets and pendant ornaments arose. (13-83-15)
तमुत्थितमहं दृष्ट्वा परं विस्मयमागमम्। प्रतिग्रहीता साक्षान्मे पितेति भरतर्षभ ॥१३-८३-१६॥
tam utthitam ahaṁ dṛṣṭvā paraṁ vismayam āgamam। pratigr̥hītā sākṣān me piteti bharatarṣabha॥13-83-16॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उत्थितम् (utthitam) - risen; अहम् (aham) - I; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; परम् (param) - supreme; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - wonder; आगमम् (āgamam) - I felt; प्रतिग्रहीता (pratigr̥hītā) - is received; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; मे (me) - by me; पितेति (pitā iti) - (as) father thus; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of Bharatas;]
(Him risen I having seen, supreme wonder I felt; is received directly by me (as) father thus, O best of Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, seeing him risen, I experienced great wonder; as I received him directly as my father.
ततो मे पुनरेवासीत्सञ्ज्ञा सञ्चिन्त्य शास्त्रतः। नायं वेदेषु विहितो विधिर्हस्त इति प्रभो ॥ पिण्डो देयो नरेणेह ततो मतिरभून्मम ॥१३-८३-१७॥
tato me punarevāsītsañjñā sañcintya śāstrataḥ। nāyaṃ vedeṣu vihito vidhirhasta iti prabho ॥ piṇḍo deyo nareṇeha tato matirabhūnmama ॥13-83-17॥
[तत: (tataḥ) - then; मे (me) - to me; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अासीत् (āsīt) - there was; सञ्ज्ञा (sañjñā) - thought; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; शास्त्रतः (śāstrataḥ) - according to the śāstra; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; वेदेषु (vedeṣu) - in the Vedas; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - enjoined; विधि: (vidhiḥ) - rule; हस्त (hasta) - by the hand; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; पिण्डो (piṇḍaḥ) - the piṇḍa (rice ball); देयः (deyaḥ) - should be given; नरेण (nareṇa) - by a man; इह (iha) - here; ततः (tataḥ) - then; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; अभूत् (abhūt) - arose; मम (mama) - to me;]
(Then to me again indeed a thought was there, having considered according to the śāstra: 'Not this rule regarding hand is enjoined in the Vedas,' thus, O lord. The piṇḍa should be given by a man here; then a thought arose to me.)
Then again, a thought occurred to me, having pondered according to the śāstra: 'This rule about using the hand is not enjoined in the Vedas,' O lord. Therefore, the piṇḍa should be given here by a man; thus this idea came to me. (13-83-17)
साक्षान्नेह मनुष्यस्य पितरोऽन्तर्हिताः क्वचित्। गृह्णन्ति विहितं त्वेवं पिण्डो देयः कुशेष्विति ॥१३-८३-१८॥
sākṣānneha manuṣyasya pitaro'ntarhitāḥ kvacit। gṛhṇanti vihitaṃ tvevaṃ piṇḍo deyaḥ kuśeṣviti ॥13-83-18॥
[साक्षात् अन्ने (sākṣāt anne) - directly (in) the food; इह (iha) - here; मनुष्यस्य (manuṣyasya) - of a human; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; अन्तर्हिताः (antarhitāḥ) - invisible; क्वचित् (kvacit) - sometimes; गृह्णन्ति (gṛhṇanti) - they take; विहितं (vihitam) - offered; तु एवम् (tu evam) - but thus; पिण्डः (piṇḍaḥ) - rice-ball offering; देयः (deyaḥ) - should be given; कुशेषु (kuśeṣu) - on kuśa grass; इति (iti) - thus;]

tato'haṁ tadanādṛtya pitur-hastanidarśanam। śāstrapramāṇāt sūkṣmaṁ tu vidhiṁ pārthiva saṁsmaran ॥13-83-19॥

(Then I, not respecting that indication of my father's hand, remembering the subtle procedure according to the authority of śāstra, however, O king.)
Then I, disregarding that sign from my father's hand, recalled, O king, the subtle procedure prescribed by scripture. (13-83-19)
ततो दर्भेषु तत्सर्वमददं भरतर्षभ। शास्त्रमार्गानुसारेण तद्विद्धि मनुजर्षभ ॥१३-८३-२०॥
tato darbheṣu tatsarvamadadaṃ bharatarṣabha। śāstramārgānusāreṇa tadviddhi manujarṣabha ॥13-83-20॥

प्रीयमाणास्तु मामूचुः प्रीताः स्म भरतर्षभ। विज्ञानेन तवानेन यन्न मुह्यसि धर्मतः ॥१३-८३-२२॥
prīyamāṇās tu mām ūcuḥ prītāḥ sma bharatarṣabha। vijñānena tavānena yan na muhyasi dharmataḥ ॥13-83-22॥

(But becoming pleased, to me they said, being delighted indeed, O bull among the Bharatas. By this, your knowledge, that not you are deluded from righteousness.)
But, being pleased, they spoke to me joyfully, O foremost of the Bharatas: 'By this knowledge of yours, you are not deluded from righteousness.' (13-83-22)
त्वया हि कुर्वता शास्त्रं प्रमाणमिह पार्थिव। आत्मा धर्मः श्रुतं वेदाः पितरश्च महर्षिभिः ॥१३-८३-२३॥
tvayā hi kurvatā śāstraṃ pramāṇam iha pārthiva। ātmā dharmaḥ śrutaṃ vedāḥ pitaraś ca maharṣibhiḥ॥13-83-23॥

O king, here, the scripture is the authority for you in action; self, righteousness, tradition, the Vedas, and the ancestors are established by the great sages. (13-83-23)
साक्षात्पितामहो ब्रह्मा गुरवोऽथ प्रजापतिः। प्रमाणमुपनीता वै स्थितिश्च न विचालिता ॥१३-८३-२४॥
sākṣātpitāmaho brahmā guravo'tha prajāpatiḥ। pramāṇamupanītā vai sthitiśca na vicālitā ॥13-83-24॥

Brahmā himself, the grandfather and lord of creatures, and the teachers—having brought forth the authority, indeed, the established order was not shaken. (13-83-24)
तदिदं सम्यगारब्धं त्वयाद्य भरतर्षभ। किं तु भूमेर्गवां चार्थे सुवर्णं दीयतामिति ॥१३-८३-२५॥
tad idaṃ samyag ārabdhaṃ tvayā adya bharatarṣabha। kiṃ tu bhūmer gavāṃ ca arthe suvarṇaṃ dīyatām iti ॥13-83-25॥

एवं वयं च धर्मश्च सर्वे चास्मत्पितामहाः। पाविता वै भविष्यन्ति पावनं परमं हि तत् ॥१३-८३-२६॥
evaṃ vayaṃ ca dharmaś ca sarve cāsmat-pitāmahāḥ। pāvitā vai bhaviṣyanti pāvanaṃ paramaṃ hi tat ॥13-83-26॥

jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa tīvra-roṣānvitena vai। triḥ-saptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivī kṛtā niḥ-kṣatriyā purā ॥13-83-30॥

pāvanaṁ yat paraṁ nṝṇām ugre karmaṇi vartatām। tad ucyatāṁ mahābhāgā iti jātaghṛṇo 'bravīt॥13-83-35॥

devatās te prayacchanti suvarṇaṃ ye dadaty uta. agnir hi devatāḥ sarvāḥ suvarṇaṃ ca tad-ātmakam ॥13-83-36॥

(The gods, they bestow gold to those who give (it), indeed. Agni indeed (is) all the gods, and gold is of that essence.)

tasmātsuvarṇaṃ dadatā dattāḥ sarvāśca devatāḥ. bhavanti puruṣavyāghra na hyataḥ paramaṃ viduḥ ॥13-83-37॥

शूलपाणेर्भगवतो रुद्रस्य च महात्मनः। गिरौ हिमवति श्रेष्ठे तदा भृगुकुलोद्वह ॥१३-८३-४०॥

देव्या विवाहे निर्वृत्ते रुद्राण्या भृगुनन्दन। समागमे भगवतो देव्या सह महात्मनः ॥ ततः सर्वे समुद्विग्ना भगवन्तमुपागमन् ॥१३-८३-४१॥
devyā vivāhe nirvṛtte rudrāṇyā bhṛgunandana। samāgame bhagavato devyā saha mahātmanaḥ ॥ tataḥ sarve samudvignā bhagavantam upāgaman ॥13-83-41॥
[देव्या (devyā) - by the goddess; विवाहे (vivāhe) - marriage; निर्वृत्ते (nirvṛtte) - having been completed; रुद्राण्या (rudrāṇyā) - by Rudrāṇī; भृगुनन्दन (bhṛgunandana) - O descendant of Bṛgu; समागमे (samāgame) - in the coming together; भगवतो (bhagavato) - of the Divine; देव्या (devyā) - with the Goddess; सह (saha) - together with; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; समुद्विग्ना (samudvignā) - disturbed; भगवन्तम् (bhagavantam) - to the Divine; उपागमन् (upāgaman) - they approached;]
(By the goddess, marriage having been completed by Rudrāṇī, O descendant of Bṛgu, in the coming together of the Divine with the Goddess together with the great-souled; then all, disturbed, approached the Divine.)
When the marriage of the Goddess Rudrāṇī was completed, O descendant of Bṛgu, at the union of the Divine with the great-souled Goddess, then all, being disturbed, approached the Divine. (13-83-41)
ते महादेवमासीनं देवीं च वरदामुमाम्। प्रसाद्य शिरसा सर्वे रुद्रमूचुर्भृगूद्वह ॥१३-८३-४२॥
te mahādevam āsīnam devīṃ ca varadām umām। prasādya śirasā sarve rudram ūcur bhṛgūdvaha ॥13-83-42॥
[ते (te) - they; महादेवम् (mahādevam) - Mahādeva; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; देवीं (devīṃ) - the goddess; च (ca) - and; वरदाम् (varadām) - bestower of boons; उमाम् (umām) - Umā; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having propitiated; शिरसा (śirasā) - with the head; सर्वे (sarve) - all; रुद्रम् (rudram) - Rudra; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - spoke; भृगूद्वह (bhṛgūdvaha) - O best of Bhṛgus;]
(They, Mahādeva seated, the goddess and the boon-bestowing Umā, having propitiated with the head, all Rudra spoke, O best of Bhṛgus.)
Having bowed with their heads and propitiated Mahādeva, who was seated along with the boon-bestowing goddess Umā, all addressed Rudra thus, O best of the Bhṛgus. (13-83-42)
अयं समागमो देव देव्या सह तवानघ। तपस्विनस्तपस्विन्या तेजस्विन्यातितेजसः ॥ अमोघतेजास्त्वं देव देवी चेयमुमा तथा ॥१३-८३-४३॥
ayaṃ samāgamo deva devyā saha tavānagha। tapasvinastapasvinyā tejasvinyātitejasaḥ ॥ amoghatejāstvaṃ deva devī ceyamumā tathā ॥13-83-43॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - meeting; देव (deva) - O god; देव्याः (devyāḥ) - with the goddess; सह (saha) - with; तव (tava) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - of the ascetic; तपस्विन्या (tapasvinyā) - with the ascetic lady; तेजस्विन्या (tejasvinyā) - with the radiant woman; अतितेजसः (atitejasaḥ) - of exceeding splendor; अमोघतेजाः (amoghatejāḥ) - of unfailing splendor; त्वम् (tvam) - you; देव (deva) - O god; देवी (devī) - the goddess; च (ca) - and; इयम् (iyam) - this; उमा (umā) - Umā; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(This meeting, O god, with the goddess, with you, O sinless one, of the ascetic with the ascetic lady, with the radiant woman of exceeding splendor, you are of unfailing splendor, O god; the goddess is this Umā likewise.)
This meeting, O god, of you and the goddess, is the union of the ascetic and the ascetic lady, the radiant one of surpassing brilliance. You, O god, are of unfailing splendor; this goddess is Umā as well. (13-83-43)
अपत्यं युवयोर्देव बलवद्भविता प्रभो। तन्नूनं त्रिषु लोकेषु न किञ्चिच्छेषयिष्यति ॥१३-८३-४४॥
apatyaṃ yuvayor deva balavad bhavitā prabho। tan nūnaṃ triṣu lokeṣu na kiñcid cheṣayiṣyati॥13-83-44॥
[अपत्यं (apatyaṃ) - offspring; युवयोः (yuvayoḥ) - of you two; देव (deva) - O god; बलवत् (balavat) - powerful; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; तत् (tat) - that; नूनं (nūnam) - indeed; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; शेषयिष्यति (cheṣayiṣyati) - will leave remaining;]
(Offspring of you two, O god, powerful, will be, O lord. That indeed in the three worlds not anything will leave remaining.)
O god, a powerful offspring will be born to you two, O lord. That one surely will leave nothing remaining in the three worlds. (13-83-44)
तदेभ्यः प्रणतेभ्यस्त्वं देवेभ्यः पृथुलोचन। वरं प्रयच्छ लोकेश त्रैलोक्यहितकाम्यया ॥ अपत्यार्थं निगृह्णीष्व तेजो ज्वलितमुत्तमम् ॥१३-८३-४५॥
tadebhyaḥ praṇatebhyaḥ tvaṃ devebhyaḥ pṛthulocana। varaṃ prayaccha lokeśa trailokyahitakāmyayā॥ apatyārthaṃ nigṛhṇīṣva tejo jvalitamuttamam॥13-83-45॥
[तत् (tat) - that; एभ्यः (ebhyaḥ) - unto these; प्रणतेभ्यः (praṇatebhyaḥ) - unto the ones who have bowed; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; देवेभ्यः (devebhyaḥ) - unto the gods; पृथुलोचन (pṛthulocana) - O wide-eyed one; वरम् (varam) - boon; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - grant; लोकेश (lokeśa) - O lord of the world; त्रैलोक्यहितकाम्यया (trailokyahitakāmyayā) - with the desire for the welfare of the three worlds; अपत्यार्थम् (apatyārtham) - for the sake of offspring; निगृह्णीष्व (nigṛhṇīṣva) - restrain; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; ज्वलितम् (jvalitam) - blazing; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme;]
(That unto these, unto the ones who have bowed, you, unto the gods, O wide-eyed one, boon grant, O lord of the world, with the desire for the welfare of the three worlds. For the sake of offspring, restrain energy blazing supreme.)
Therefore, O wide-eyed lord of the world, grant a boon to these gods and to those who have bowed, out of desire for the welfare of the three worlds. For the sake of an offspring, restrain your blazing, supreme energy. (13-83-45)
इति तेषां कथयतां भगवान्गोवृषध्वजः। एवमस्त्विति देवांस्तान्विप्रर्षे प्रत्यभाषत ॥१३-८३-४६॥
iti teṣāṃ kathayatāṃ bhagavān govṛṣadhvajaḥ। evam astv iti devāṃs tān viprarṣe pratyabhāṣata॥13-83-46॥
[इति (iti) - thus; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; कथयतां (kathayatām) - speaking; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; गोवृषध्वजः (govṛṣadhvajaḥ) - the one whose banner bears the bull; एवम् (evam) - so; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - thus; देवान् (devān) - gods; तान् (tān) - them; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O best of sages; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed;]
(Thus, while they were speaking, the venerable Govṛṣadhvaja addressed those gods, O best of sages, saying, "So let it be.")
Thus, while they were speaking, the venerable lord Śiva, whose banner bears a bull, addressed those gods, O sage among brāhmaṇas, saying, "So be it." (13-83-46)
इत्युक्त्वा चोर्ध्वमनयत्तद्रेतो वृषवाहनः। ऊर्ध्वरेताः समभवत्ततःप्रभृति चापि सः ॥१३-८३-४७॥
ity uktvā co rdhvam anayattad reto vṛṣavāhanaḥ। ūrdhvaretāḥ samabhavat tataḥ prabhṛti cāpi saḥ॥13-83-47॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; च (ca) - and; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; अनयत् (anayat) - carried; तत् (tat) - that; रेतः (retaḥ) - seed; वृषवाहनः (vṛṣavāhanaḥ) - the Bull-vehicled (Śiva); ऊर्ध्वरेताः (ūrdhvaretāḥ) - whose seed is upward; समभवत् (samabhavat) - became; ततःप्रभृति (tataḥ prabhṛti) - from then on; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Thus having spoken and upwards carried that seed, the Bull-vehicled (Śiva), whose seed is upward, became; from then on also he.)
Thus, having spoken, the Bull-vehicled Shiva took that seed upwards, and from then on he became one whose seed is upward (ūrdhvaretāḥ). (13-83-47)
रुद्राणी तु ततः क्रुद्धा प्रजोच्छेदे तथा कृते। देवानथाब्रवीत्तत्र स्त्रीभावात्परुषं वचः ॥१३-८३-४८॥
rudrāṇī tu tataḥ kruddhā prajocchede tathā kṛte। devān athābravīt tatra strī-bhāvāt paruṣaṃ vacaḥ ॥13-83-48॥
[रुद्राणी (rudrāṇī) - Pārvatī, wife of Rudra; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; क्रुद्धा (kruddhā) - angry; प्रजोच्छेदे (praja-ucchede) - in the destruction of offspring; तथा (tathā) - thus; कृते (kṛte) - having been done; देवान् (devān) - to the gods; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - she spoke; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्त्रीभावात् (strī-bhāvāt) - from (her) feminine nature; परुषं (paruṣam) - harsh; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
(Pārvatī but then angry in the destruction of offspring thus having been done to the gods then spoke there from feminine nature harsh words.)
But Pārvatī, then angered by the destruction of offspring thus carried out, spoke harsh words to the gods there, due to her feminine nature. (13-83-48)
यस्मादपत्यकामो वै भर्ता मे विनिवर्तितः। तस्मात्सर्वे सुरा यूयमनपत्या भविष्यथ ॥१३-८३-४९॥
yasmād apatyakāmo vai bhartā me vinivartitaḥ। tasmāt sarve surā yūyam anapatyā bhaviṣyatha ॥13-83-49॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because of which; अपत्यकामः (apatyakāmaḥ) - desirous of offspring; वै (vai) - indeed; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; मे (me) - my; विनिवर्तितः (vinivartitaḥ) - turned away; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सुरा (surāḥ) - gods; यूयम् (yūyam) - you; अनपत्या (anapatyāḥ) - childless; भविष्यथ (bhaviṣyatha) - you will become;]
(Because of which indeed my husband, desirous of offspring, has been turned away, therefore all you gods, you will become childless.)
Because my husband, who desired offspring, has indeed been turned away, therefore all of you gods shall become childless. (13-83-49)
प्रजोच्छेदो मम कृतो यस्माद्युष्माभिरद्य वै। तस्मात्प्रजा वः खगमाः सर्वेषां न भविष्यति ॥१३-८३-५०॥
prajocchedo mama kṛto yasmādyuṣmābhiradya vai। tasmātprajā vaḥ khagamāḥ sarveṣāṁ na bhaviṣyati॥13-83-50॥
[प्रजोच्छेदः (prajochchedaḥ) - destruction of progeny; मम (mama) - of mine; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been done; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; युष्माभिः (yuṣmābhiḥ) - by you (all); अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - offspring; वः (vaḥ) - of you (all); खगमाः (khagamāḥ) - bird-born; flying creatures; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; न (na) - not; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - shall become;]
(Destruction of progeny of mine has been done because by you today indeed. Therefore, offspring of you, bird-born, of all, not shall become.)
Because you have today destroyed my progeny, therefore, none of you who are bird-born shall have offspring. (13-83-50)
पावकस्तु न तत्रासीच्छापकाले भृगूद्वह। देवा देव्यास्तथा शापादनपत्यास्तदाभवन् ॥१३-८३-५१॥
pāvakas tu na tatrāsīc chāpakāle bhṛgūdvaha। devā devyās tathā śāpād anapatyās tadābhavan॥13-83-51॥
[पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - Agni; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; तत्र (tatra) - there; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; शापकाले (śāpakāle) - at the time of the curse; भृगूद्वह (bhṛgūdvaha) - O descendent of Bhṛgu; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; देव्याः (devyāḥ) - of the goddess; तथा (tathā) - likewise; शापात् (śāpāt) - from the curse; अनपत्याः (anapatyāḥ) - childless; तदा (tadā) - then; अभवन् (abhavan) - became;]
(But Agni was not there at the time of the curse, O descendent of Bhṛgu. The gods, likewise, on account of the curse of the goddess, then became childless.)
But Agni was not present at the time of the curse, O descendant of Bhṛgu. The gods, too, because of the goddess's curse, then became childless. (13-83-51)
रुद्रस्तु तेजोऽप्रतिमं धारयामास तत्तदा। प्रस्कन्नं तु ततस्तस्मात्किञ्चित्तत्रापतद्भुवि ॥१३-८३-५२॥
rudras tu tejo'pratimaṁ dhārayāmāsa tat tadā। praskannaṁ tu tatas tasmāt kiñcit tatrāpatad bhuvi ॥13-83-52॥
[रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; (proper noun, nominative singular masculine); तु (tu) - but; (particle); तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; brilliance; radiance; (neuter nominative/accusative singular); अप्रतिमम् (apratimam) - unparalleled; without equal; (accusative singular neuter); धारयामास (dhārayāmāsa) - bore; sustained; upheld; (3rd person singular, aorist); तत् (tat) - that; (neuter accusative singular); तदा (tadā) - at that time; then; (indeclinable); प्रस्कन्नम् (praskannam) - having spilled out; oozed; fallen down; (neuter nominative/accusative singular); तु (tu) - but; (particle); ततः (tataḥ) - from that; thence; (ablative singular); तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from him; from that; (ablative singular); किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; somewhat; (neuter nominative/accusative singular); तत्र (tatra) - there; (indeclinable); आपतत् (āpatat) - fell; descended; (3rd person singular imperfect); भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground; on the earth; (locative singular);]
(Rudra but energy unparalleled bore that at that time. Spilled out but from that from him a little there fell on the earth.)
But Rudra bore that unparalleled energy at that time. Yet, some of it spilled out from him and fell there on the earth. (13-83-52)
तत्पपात तदा चाग्नौ ववृधे चाद्भुतोपमम्। तेजस्तेजसि सम्पृक्तमेकयोनित्वमागतम् ॥१३-८३-५३॥
tat papāta tadā ca agnau vavṛdhe ca adbhuta-upamam। tejas tejasi sampṛktam eka-yonitvam āgatam ॥13-83-53॥
[तत् (tat) - that; पपात (papāta) - fell; तदा (tadā) - then; च (ca) - and; अग्नौ (agnau) - into fire; ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - increased; च (ca) - and; अद्भुतोपमम् (adbhuta-upamam) - wondrously; तेजः (tejas) - splendor; तेजसि (tejasi) - in splendor; सम्पृक्तम् (sampṛktam) - combined; एकयोनित्वम् (eka-yonitvam) - having one source; आगतम् (āgatam) - come;]
(That fell then and in the fire increased and wondrously; splendor in splendor combined, having one source, come.)
That fell then into the fire and increased wondrously; the splendor, having merged with splendor, came to possess a single origin. (13-83-53)
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः। असुरस्तारको नाम तेन सन्तापिता भृशम् ॥१३-८३-५४॥
etasmínneva kāle tu devāḥ śakra-purogamāḥ। asuraḥ tārakaḥ nāma tena santāpitā bhṛśam ॥13-83-54॥
[एतस्मिन् एव (etasmín eva) - in this indeed; काले (kāle) - in time; तु (tu) - but; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; शक्रपुरोगमाः (śakra-purogamāḥ) - with Indra at the head; असुरः (asuraḥ) - the asura; तारकः (tārakaḥ) - Tāraka; नाम (nāma) - named; तेन (tena) - by him; सन्तापिताः (santāpitāḥ) - tormented; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly;]
(But in this very time indeed, the gods, led by Indra, were greatly tormented by the asura named Tāraka.)
At this very time, the gods, with Indra at the forefront, were greatly tormented by the asura named Tāraka. (13-83-54)
आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा मरुतोऽथाश्विनावपि। साध्याश्च सर्वे सन्त्रस्ता दैतेयस्य पराक्रमात् ॥१३-८३-५५॥
ādityā vasavo rudrā maruto’thāśvināv api. sādhyāś ca sarve santrastā daiteyasya parākramāt ॥13-83-55॥
[आदित्या (ādityā) - the Ādityas; (solar deities); वसवः (vasavaḥ) - the Vasus; (a class of deities); रुद्राः (rudrāḥ) - the Rudras; (storm deities); मरुतः (marutaḥ) - the Maruts; (wind gods); अथ (atha) - then; also; अश्विनौ (aśvinau) - the Aśvins; (divine twins); अपि (api) - also; साध्याः (sādhyāḥ) - the Sādhyas; (a class of deities); च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सन्त्रस्ता (santrastā) - terrified; दैतेयस्य (daiteyasya) - of the Daitya; (demon, son of Diti); पराक्रमात् (parākramāt) - by the valor; (prowess, power of action);]
(Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, Maruts, then the Aśvins also, Sādhyas and all, terrified by the valor of the Daitya.)
The Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, Maruts, the Aśvins as well as all the Sādhyas were terrified by the valor of the Daitya. (13-83-55)
स्थानानि देवतानां हि विमानानि पुराणि च। ऋषीणामाश्रमाश्चैव बभूवुरसुरैर्हृताः ॥१३-८३-५६॥
sthānāni devatānāṃ hi vimānāni purāṇi ca। ṛṣīṇām āśramāś caiva babhūvus surair hṛtāḥ॥13-83-56॥
[स्थानानि (sthānāni) - places; देवतानाम् (devatānām) - of the deities; हि (hi) - indeed; विमानानि (vimānāni) - aerial cars; पुराणि (purāṇi) - ancient; च (ca) - and; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; आश्रमाः (āśramāḥ) - hermitages; चैव (caiva) - and also; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; असुरैः (asuraiḥ) - by the asuras; हृताः (hṛtāḥ) - taken away;]
(places of the deities indeed, aerial cars ancient and, of the sages hermitages and also became by the asuras taken away)
Indeed, the places of the deities, the ancient aerial cars, and also the hermitages of the sages, were taken away by the asuras. (13-83-56)
ते दीनमनसः सर्वे देवाश्च ऋषयश्च ह। प्रजग्मुः शरणं देवं ब्रह्माणमजरं प्रभुम् ॥१३-८३-५७॥
te dīnamanasaḥ sarve devāś ca ṛṣayaś ca ha। prajagmuḥ śaraṇaṃ devaṃ brahmāṇam ajaraṃ prabhum ॥13-83-57॥
[ते (te) - they; दीनमनसः (dīnamanasaḥ) - with dejected minds; सर्वे (sarve) - all; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; ह (ha) - indeed; प्रजग्मुः (prajagmuḥ) - approached; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; देवम् (devam) - the god; ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - Brahmā; अजरम् (ajaram) - ageless; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - lord;]
(They, with dejected minds, all the gods and also the sages indeed, approached for refuge the god Brahmā, ageless lord.)
All the gods and sages, with dejected minds, indeed went to Brahmā, the ageless lord, seeking refuge. (13-83-57)
