असुरस्तारको नाम त्वया दत्तवरः प्रभो। सुरानृषींश्च क्लिश्नाति वधस्तस्य विधीयताम् ॥१३-८४-१॥
asuras tārako nāma tvayā dattavaraḥ prabho। surān ṛṣīṁś ca kliśnāti vadhas tasya vidhīyatām॥13-84-1॥
[असुरः (asuraḥ) - demon; तारकः (tārakaḥ) - Tāraka; नाम (nāma) - named; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; दत्तवरः (dattavaraḥ) - granted a boon; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; सुरान् (surān) - the gods; ऋषींश् (ṛṣīṁś) - the sages; च (ca) - and; क्लिश्नाति (kliśnāti) - torments; वधः (vadhaḥ) - slaying; तस्य (tasya) - of him; विधीयताम् (vidhīyatām) - let it be arranged;]
(The demon named Tāraka, granted a boon by you, O lord, torments the gods and the sages; let the slaying of him be arranged.)
O lord, the demon named Tāraka, who has received a boon from you, is tormenting the gods and sages; therefore, please arrange for his destruction. (13-84-1)
तस्माद्भयं समुत्पन्नमस्माकं वै पितामह। परित्रायस्व नो देव न ह्यन्या गतिरस्ति नः ॥१३-८४-२॥
tasmādbhayaṁ samutpannamasmākaṁ vai pitāmaha। paritrāyasva no deva na hyanyā gatirasti naḥ ॥13-84-2॥

O grandsire, from that, fear has arisen for us indeed; protect us, O god, for we truly have no other refuge. (13-84-2)

samo'ham sarvabhūtānām adharmaṃ neha rocare. hanyatāṃ tārakaḥ kṣipraṃ surarṣigaṇabādhakaḥ ॥13-84-3॥
[समः (samaḥ) - equal; अहम् (aham) - I; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; अधर्मम् (adharmam) - unrighteousness; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; रोचये (rocaye) - (I) take delight; हन्यताम् (hanyatām) - let (him) be slain; तारकः (tārakaḥ) - Tāraka; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; सुरर्षिगणबाधकः (surarṣigaṇabādhakaḥ) - the troubler of the groups of divine sages;]
(Equal I am to all beings. Unrighteousness I do not delight in here. Let Tāraka, the troubler of the groups of divine sages, be slain quickly.)
I am impartial to all beings, and I do not favor unrighteousness here. Let Tāraka, who troubles the assemblies of the divine sages, be slain quickly. (13-84-3)
वेदा धर्माश्च नोत्सादं गच्छेयुः सुरसत्तमाः। विहितं पूर्वमेवात्र मया वै व्येतु वो ज्वरः ॥१३-८४-४॥
vedā dharmāś ca notsādaṃ gaccheyuḥ surasattamāḥ। vihitaṃ pūrvam evātra mayā vai vyetu vo jvaraḥ॥13-84-4॥
[वेदा (vedā) - Vedas; धर्माश्च (dharmāḥ ca) - and dharmas; न (na) - not; उत्सादं (utsādam) - destruction; गच्छेयुः (gaccheyuḥ) - should undergo; सुरसत्तमाः (surasattamāḥ) - O best among the gods; विहितं (vihitam) - ordained; पूर्वमेव (pūrvam eva) - already formerly; अत्र (atra) - here; मया (mayā) - by me; वै (vai) - indeed; व्येतु (vyetu) - let be dispelled; वः (vaḥ) - your; ज्वरः (jvaraḥ) - affliction;]
(Vedas and dharmas not destruction should undergo, O best among the gods. Ordained already formerly here by me indeed, let your affliction be dispelled.)
O best among the gods, the Vedas and dharmas should not come to destruction. What was ordained by me long ago here, let your affliction be dispelled. (13-84-4)

वरदानाद्भगवतो दैतेयो बलगर्वितः। देवैर्न शक्यते हन्तुं स कथं प्रशमं व्रजेत् ॥१३-८४-५॥
varadānād bhagavato daiteyo balagarvitaḥ। devair na śakyate hantuṃ sa kathaṃ praśamaṃ vrajet ॥13-84-5॥
[वरदानात् (varadānāt) - from boon; भगवतः (bhagavataḥ) - of the blessed one; दैतेयः (daiteyaḥ) - the son of Diti; बलगर्वितः (balagarvitaḥ) - proud of strength; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; न (na) - not; शक्यते (śakyate) - is able; हन्तुम् (hantuṃ) - to kill; सः (saḥ) - he; कथम् (katham) - how; प्रशमम् (praśamam) - to cessation; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should go;]
(From the boon of the blessed one, the son of Diti, proud of strength, by the gods not is able to be killed; he how to cessation should go?)
Due to the boon of the blessed one, the son of Diti, proud of his strength, cannot be killed by the gods; so how could he meet his end? (13-84-5)
स हि नैव स्म देवानां नासुराणां न रक्षसाम्। वध्यः स्यामिति जग्राह वरं त्वत्तः पितामह ॥१३-८४-६॥
sa hi naiva sma devānāṃ nāsurāṇāṃ na rakṣasām। vadhyaḥ syāmiti jagrāha varaṃ tvattaḥ pitāmaha ॥13-84-6॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; नैव (na eva) - not indeed; स्म (sma) - ever; देवानां (devānāṃ) - of the gods; न (na) - not; असुराणां (asurāṇāṃ) - of the Asuras; न (na) - not; रक्षसाम् (rakṣasām) - of the Rākṣasas; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - liable to be slain; स्याम् (syām) - I would be; इति (iti) - thus; जग्राह (jagrāha) - he accepted; वरं (varaṃ) - a boon; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O Grandfather;]
(He indeed, not ever of the gods, not of the Asuras, not of the Rākṣasas, liable to be slain I would be—thus he accepted a boon from you, O Grandfather.)
He indeed never accepted to be liable to be slain by gods, Asuras, or Rākṣasas—thus he accepted that boon from you, O Grandfather. (13-84-6)
देवाश्च शप्ता रुद्राण्या प्रजोच्छेदे पुरा कृते। न भविष्यति वोऽपत्यमिति सर्वजगत्पते ॥१३-८४-७॥
devāś ca śaptā rudrāṇyā prajocchede purā kṛte। na bhaviṣyati vo'patyam iti sarvajagatpate॥13-84-7॥

(Gods and (were) cursed by Rudrāṇī for progeny-destruction, formerly having been done; not there will be offspring for you thus, O lord of all the worlds.)
O lord of all the worlds, the gods were once cursed by Rudrāṇī regarding the destruction of their progeny: "You will have no offspring." (13-84-7)

हुताशनो न तत्रासीच्छापकाले सुरोत्तमाः। स उत्पादयितापत्यं वधार्थं त्रिदशद्विषाम् ॥१३-८४-८॥
hutāśano na tatrāsīc chāpakāle surottamāḥ। sa utpādayitāpatyaṃ vadhārthaṃ tridaśadviṣām ॥13-84-8॥
[हुताशनः (hutāśanaḥ) - Fire-god; न (na) - not; तत्र (tatra) - there; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; शापकाले (śāpakāle) - at the time of the curse; सुरोत्तमाः (surottamāḥ) - best among gods; सः (saḥ) - he; उत्पादयिता (utpādayitā) - creator; अपत्यं (apatyaṃ) - offspring; वधार्थं (vadhārtham) - for the purpose of killing; त्रिदशद्विषाम् (tridaśadviṣām) - of the enemies of the gods;]
(Fire-god not there was at the time of the curse, best among gods. He, creator offspring for purpose of killing the enemies of the gods.)
The Fire-god was not present there at the time of the curse, O best among the gods. He begot an offspring to destroy the enemies of the gods. (13-84-8)
तद्वै सर्वानतिक्रम्य देवदानवराक्षसान्। मानुषानथ गन्धर्वान्नागानथ च पक्षिणः ॥१३-८४-९॥
tad vai sarvān atikramya deva-dānava-rākṣasān। mānuṣān atha gandharvān nāgān atha ca pakṣiṇaḥ ॥13-84-9॥
[तत् (tat) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all (accusative plural masculine); अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having surpassed; देवदानवराक्षसान् (deva-dānava-rākṣasān) - the gods, asuras, and rākṣasas; मानुषान् (mānuṣān) - humans; अथ (atha) - and then; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - gandharvas; नागान् (nāgān) - nāgas; अथ (atha) - and then; च (ca) - and; पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - birds;]
(That indeed, having surpassed all the gods, asuras, and rākṣasas, humans and then gandharvas, nāgas and then also birds.)
That indeed surpassed all—the gods, asuras, rākṣasas, humans, gandharvas, nāgas, and also birds. (13-84-9)
अस्त्रेणामोघपातेन शक्त्या तं घातयिष्यति। यतो वो भयमुत्पन्नं ये चान्ये सुरशत्रवः ॥१३-८४-१०॥
astreṇāmoghapātena śaktyā taṃ ghātayiṣyati। yato vo bhayam utpannaṃ ye cānye suraśatravaḥ ॥13-84-10॥
[अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - by the weapon; अमोघपातेन (amoghapātena) - with unfailing strike; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - by the spear; तं (taṃ) - him; घातयिष्यति (ghātayiṣyati) - he will slay; यतः (yataḥ) - because; वः (vaḥ) - of you; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; उत्पन्नम् (utpannam) - produced; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; सुरशत्रवः (suraśatravaḥ) - enemies of the gods;]
(By the weapon, with unfailing strike, by the spear, him he will slay; because of you fear produced, who and others enemies of the gods.)
He will slay him with a spear— a weapon with unfailing strike; because of whom fear has arisen for you and for the other enemies of the gods. (13-84-10)
सनातनो हि सङ्कल्पः काम इत्यभिधीयते। रुद्रस्य तेजः प्रस्कन्नमग्नौ निपतितं च तत् ॥१३-८४-११॥
sanātano hi saṅkalpaḥ kāma ityabhidhīyate। rudrasya tejaḥ praskannamagnau nipatitaṃ ca tat ॥13-84-11॥
[सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; हि (hi) - indeed; सङ्कल्पः (saṅkalpaḥ) - resolve; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; इति (iti) - thus; अभिधीयते (abhidhīyate) - is called; रुद्रस्य (rudrasya) - of Rudra; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; प्रस्कन्नम् (praskannam) - flowed; अग्नौ (agnau) - into fire; निपतितं (nipatitaṃ) - fallen; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Eternal indeed resolve desire thus is called. Of Rudra energy flowed into fire fallen and that.)
Indeed, resolve is eternal, which is called desire. The energy of Rudra flowed into and fell into the fire. (13-84-11)
तत्तेजोऽग्निर्महद्भूतं द्वितीयमिव पावकम्। वधार्थं देवशत्रूणां गङ्गायां जनयिष्यति ॥१३-८४-१२॥
tattejo'gnirmahadbhūtaṃ dvitīyamiva pāvakam। vadhārthaṃ devaśatrūṇāṃ gaṅgāyāṃ janayiṣyati ॥13-84-12॥
[तत् (tat) - that; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; มหद्भूतम् (mahadbhūtam) - great being; द्वितीयम् (dvitīyam) - second; इव (iva) - like; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire; वधार्थम् (vadhārtham) - for the purpose of killing; देवशत्रूणाम् (devaśatrūṇām) - of the enemies of the gods; गङ्गायाम् (gaṅgāyām) - in Gaṅgā; जनयिष्यति (janayiṣyati) - will generate;]
(That splendor, fire, great being, a second as if fire, for the purpose of killing the enemies of the gods, in Gaṅgā, will generate.)
That splendor, like a second fire and a great being, will be generated in Gaṅgā for the destruction of the enemies of the gods. (13-84-12)
स तु नावाप तं शापं नष्टः स हुतभुक्तदा। तस्माद्वो भयहृद्देवाः समुत्पत्स्यति पावकिः ॥१३-८४-१३॥
sa tu nāvāpa taṃ śāpaṃ naṣṭaḥ sa hutabhuktadā। tasmād vo bhayahṛd devāḥ samutpatsyati pāvakiḥ॥13-84-13॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; अवाप (avāpa) - obtained; तं (taṃ) - that; शापं (śāpaṃ) - curse; नष्टः (naṣṭaḥ) - destroyed; स (sa) - he; हुतभुक्तदा (hutabhuktadā) - giver to (or for) the eater of the oblation (i.e., fire); तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; वः (vaḥ) - to you; भयहृत् (bhayahṛt) - remover of fear; देवाः (devāḥ) - O gods; समुत्पत्स्यति (samutpatsyati) - will arise; पावकिः (pāvakiḥ) - son of Pāvaka (fire);]
(But he did not obtain that curse, he, the one destroyed, the giver to the eater of the oblation (fire). Therefore, O gods, the remover of fear, son of Pāvaka, will arise for you.)
But he did not incur that curse—he, who was destroyed, the giver to the consumer of the oblation (fire). Therefore, O gods, the remover of fear, the son of Pāvaka, will be born for you. (13-84-13)
अन्विष्यतां वै ज्वलनस्तथा चाद्य नियुज्यताम्। तारकस्य वधोपायः कथितो वै मयानघाः ॥१३-८४-१४॥
anviṣyatāṃ vai jvalanastathā cādya niyujyatām। tārakasya vadhopāyaḥ kathito vai mayānaghāḥ ॥13-84-14॥
[अन्विष्यतां (anviṣyatām) - let it be searched; वै (vai) - indeed; ज्वलनः (jvalanaḥ) - fire; तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; अद्य (adya) - today; नियुज्यताम् (niyujyatām) - let (him) be employed; तारकस्य (tārakasya) - of Tāraka; वधोपायः (vadhopāyaḥ) - means of killing; कथितः (kathitaḥ) - has been told; वै (vai) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; अनघाः (anaghāḥ) - O blameless ones;]
(Let fire indeed be searched out, and thus let him also be employed today. The means of killing Tāraka has indeed been told by me, O blameless ones.)
Let fire be sought and thus also employed today. The means for Tāraka's destruction has indeed been described by me, O blameless ones. (13-84-14)
न हि तेजस्विनां शापास्तेजःसु प्रभवन्ति वै। बलान्यतिबलं प्राप्य नबलानि भवन्ति वै ॥१३-८४-१५॥
na hi tejasvināṃ śāpās tejaḥsu prabhavanti vai। balāny atibalaṃ prāpya nabalāni bhavanti vai॥13-84-15॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; तेजस्विनां (tejasvinām) - of the powerful; शापाः (śāpāḥ) - curses; तेजःसु (tejaḥsu) - upon the powerful; प्रभवन्ति (prabhavanti) - take effect; वै (vai) - indeed; बलानि (balāni) - lesser strengths; अतिबलम् (atibalam) - excessive strength; प्राप्य (prāpya) - attaining; नबलानि (nabalāni) - feeble ones; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Not indeed do curses of the powerful take effect upon the powerful; lesser strengths, attaining excessive strength, indeed become feeble ones.)
Indeed, the curses of the powerful do not affect the powerful; lesser strengths, when encountered by excessive strength, certainly become powerless. (13-84-15)
हन्यादवध्यान्वरदानपि चैव तपस्विनः। सङ्कल्पाभिरुचिः कामः सनातनतमोऽनलः ॥१३-८४-१६॥
hanyād avadhyān varadān api caiva tapasvinaḥ। saṅkalpābhiruciḥ kāmaḥ sanātanatamo'nalaḥ॥13-84-16॥
[हन्यात् (hanyāt) - may destroy; अवध्यात् (avadhyān) - those who are unkillable; वरदान् (varadān) - blessed with boons; अपि च एव (api ca eva) - even and indeed; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics; सङ्कल्पाभिरुचिः (saṅkalpābhiruciḥ) - who is pleased by resolve; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; सनातनतमः (sanātanatamaḥ) - the most ancient; अनलः (analaḥ) - fire;]
(May desire—who is the most ancient fire, who is pleased by resolve—destroy even ascetics blessed with boons, who are unkillable.)
Desire, the most ancient fire, pleased by the power of resolve, may destroy even ascetics endowed with boons who are otherwise invincible. (13-84-16)
जगत्पतिरनिर्देश्यः सर्वगः सर्वभावनः। हृच्छयः सर्वभूतानां ज्येष्ठो रुद्रादपि प्रभुः ॥१३-८४-१७॥
jagatpatir-anirdeśyaḥ sarvagaḥ sarvabhāvanaḥ। hṛcchayaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ jyeṣṭho rudrād-api prabhuḥ॥13-84-17॥

अन्विष्यतां स तु क्षिप्रं तेजोराशिर्हुताशनः। स वो मनोगतं कामं देवः सम्पादयिष्यति ॥१३-८४-१८॥
anviṣyatāṃ sa tu kṣipraṃ tejorāśirhutāśanaḥ। sa vo manogataṃ kāmaṃ devaḥ sampādayiṣyati॥13-84-18॥

एतद्वाक्यमुपश्रुत्य ततो देवा महात्मनः। जग्मुः संसिद्धसङ्कल्पाः पर्येषन्तो विभावसुम् ॥१३-८४-१९॥
etadvākyam upaśrutya tato devā mahātmanaḥ। jagmuḥ saṁsiddhasaṅkalpāḥ paryeṣanto vibhāvasum ॥13-84-19॥

ततस्त्रैलोक्यमृषयो व्यचिन्वन्त सुरैः सह। काङ्क्षन्तो दर्शनं वह्नेः सर्वे तद्गतमानसाः ॥१३-८४-२०॥
tatas trailokyam ṛṣayo vyacinvanta suraiḥ saha। kāṅkṣanto darśanaṃ vahneḥ sarve tad-gatamānasāḥ ॥13-84-20॥

परेण तपसा युक्ताः श्रीमन्तो लोकविश्रुताः। लोकानन्वचरन्सिद्धाः सर्व एव भृगूद्वह ॥ नष्टमात्मनि संलीनं नाधिजग्मुर्हुताशनम् ॥१३-८४-२१॥
pareṇa tapasā yuktāḥ śrīmanto lokaviśrutāḥ। lokānanvacaransiddhāḥ sarva eva bhṛgūdvaha॥ naṣṭamātmani saṃlīnaṃ nādhijagmurhutāśanam॥13-84-21॥
[परेण (pareṇa) - by supreme; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - engaged; श्रीमन्तः (śrīmantaḥ) - possessed of fortune; लोकविश्रुताः (lokaviśrutāḥ) - famous in the worlds; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds (accusative); अन्वचरन् (anvacaran) - wandered after; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; सर्व (sarva) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; भृगूद्वह (bhṛgūdvaha) - O best of the Bhṛgus; नष्टम् (naṣṭam) - lost; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in themselves; संलीनम् (saṃlīnam) - absorbed; न (na) - not; अधिजग्मुः (adhijagmuḥ) - reached; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - fire;]
(By supreme austerity engaged, possessed of fortune, famous in the worlds, the perfected ones indeed wandered among the worlds, O best of the Bhṛgus. The lost (fire), absorbed in themselves, they did not reach the fire.)
Endowed with supreme austerity, wealth, and fame in the worlds, all the perfected beings wandered among the worlds, O best of the Bhṛgus. The fire, being lost and merged into themselves, they did not attain. (13-84-21)
ततः सञ्जातसन्त्रासानग्नेर्दर्शनलालसान्। जलेचरः क्लान्तमनास्तेजसाग्नेः प्रदीपितः ॥ उवाच देवान्मण्डूको रसातलतलोत्थितः ॥१३-८४-२२॥
tataḥ sañjāta-santrāsān agneḥ darśana-lālasān। jale-caraḥ klānta-manāḥ tejasā agneḥ pradīpitaḥ॥ uvāca devān maṇḍūkaḥ rasātala-tala-utthitaḥ॥13-84-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सञ्जातसन्त्रासान् (sañjāta-santrāsān) - having arisen fear; अग्नेः (agneḥ) - of Agni (fire); दर्शनलालसान् (darśana-lālasān) - desiring to see; जलेचरः (jale-caraḥ) - water-dweller; क्लान्तमनाः (klānta-manāḥ) - with weary mind; तेजसाऽग्नेः (tejasā agneḥ) - by the splendor of Agni; प्रदीपितः (pradīpitaḥ) - inflamed; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; देवान् (devān) - to the gods; मण्डूको (maṇḍūkaḥ) - the frog; रसातलतलोत्थितः (rasātala-tala-utthitaḥ) - arisen from the bottom of the netherworld;]
(Then, with fear arisen, of Agni, desiring to see, the water-dweller, with weary mind, inflamed by the splendor of Agni, spoke to the gods—the frog arisen from the bottom of the netherworld.)
Then, the frog, whose mind was weary, frightened, desiring a vision of Agni, and inflamed by the radiance of Agni, who had arisen from the bottom of the netherworld, spoke to the gods. (13-84-22)
रसातलतले देवा वसत्यग्निरिति प्रभो। सन्तापादिह सम्प्राप्तः पावकप्रभवादहम् ॥१३-८४-२३॥
rasātalatale devā vasaty agnir iti prabho। santāpād iha samprāptaḥ pāvaka-prabhavād aham ॥13-84-23॥
[रसातलतले (rasātala-tale) - at the bottom of the netherworld; देवा (devā) - O lord; वसति (vasati) - dwells; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O master; सन्तापात् (santāpāt) - from heat; इह (iha) - here; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - arrived; पावकप्रभवात् (pāvaka-prabhavāt) - from the radiance/glow of fire; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(At the bottom of the netherworld, O lord, fire dwells, thus, O master, from heat here arrived from the radiance of fire, I.)
O lord, it is said that fire dwells at the bottom of the netherworld. O master, I have arrived here due to the heat, because of the brilliance of the fire. (13-84-23)
स संसुप्तो जले देवा भगवान्हव्यवाहनः। अपः संसृज्य तेजोभिस्तेन सन्तापिता वयम् ॥१३-८४-२४॥
sa saṁsupto jale devā bhagavān havya-vāhanaḥ. apaḥ saṁsṛjya tejobhis tena santāpitā vayam ॥13-84-24॥
[स (sa) - he; संसुप्तः (saṁsuptaḥ) - asleep; जले (jale) - in water; देवाः (devāḥ) - O gods; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; हव्यवाहनः (havya-vāhanaḥ) - Agni (the carrier of offerings to gods); अपः (apaḥ) - waters; संसृज्य (saṁsṛjya) - having mingled; तेजोभिः (tejobhiḥ) - with his energies/powers; तेन (tena) - by him; सन्तापिताः (santāpitāḥ) - afflicted; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(He, asleep in the water, O gods, the revered havya-vāhana (Agni), having mingled with the waters with his energies, by him we have been afflicted.)
He, the revered Agni, sleeping in the water, O gods, having mingled his energies with the waters, has afflicted us. (13-84-24)
तस्य दर्शनमिष्टं वो यदि देवा विभावसोः। तत्रैनमभिगच्छध्वं कार्यं वो यदि वह्निना ॥१३-८४-२५॥
tasya darśanam iṣṭaṃ vo yadi devā vibhāvasoḥ. tatra enam abhigacchadhvaṃ kāryaṃ vo yadi vahninā ॥13-84-25॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - seeing; इष्टं (iṣṭam) - desired; वः (vaḥ) - to you (plural); यदि (yadi) - if; देवाः (devāḥ) - O gods; विभावसोः (vibhāvasoḥ) - of Vibhāvasu (Fire); तत्र (tatra) - there; एनम् (enam) - him; अभिगच्छध्वम् (abhigacchadhvam) - approach; कार्यं (kāryam) - work; वः (vaḥ) - your; यदि (yadi) - if; वह्निना (vahninā) - by fire;]
(Of him seeing desired to you if O gods of Vibhāvasu. There him approach work your if by fire.)
If the sight of him is desired by you, O gods of Fire, then approach him there to accomplish your work by means of fire. (13-84-25)
गम्यतां साधयिष्यामो वयं ह्यग्निभयात्सुराः। एतावदुक्त्वा मण्डूकस्त्वरितो जलमाविशत् ॥१३-८४-२६॥
gamyatāṁ sādhayiṣyāmo vayaṁ hyagnibhayātsurāḥ। etāvaduktvā maṇḍūkastvarito jalamāviśat ॥13-84-26॥
[गम्यतां (gamyatāṁ) - let it be gone; (imperative passive, from √gam;) साधयिष्यामः (sādhayiṣyāmaḥ) - we shall accomplish; (future middle, from √sādh, causative;) वयम् (vayam) - we; (nominative plural;) हि (hi) - indeed; for; (particle;) अग्नि-भयात् (agni-bhayāt) - from fear of fire; (ablative;) सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; (nominative plural;) एतावत् (etāvat) - this much; thus far; (adverb;) उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; (gerund of √vac;) मण्डूकः (maṇḍūkaḥ) - the frog; (nominative singular;) त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - quickly; (adverb;) जलम् (jalam) - water; (accusative singular;) आविशत् (āviśat) - entered; (imperfect of ā+√viś;);]
(Let it be gone; we shall accomplish; we indeed from fear of fire, O gods. This much having spoken, the frog quickly entered the water. (13-84-26))
"Let it be gone; we will accomplish it, O gods, indeed out of fear of fire." Having spoken thus, the frog quickly entered the water. (13-84-26)
हुताशनस्तु बुबुधे मण्डूकस्याथ पैशुनम्। शशाप स तमासाद्य न रसान्वेत्स्यसीति वै ॥१३-८४-२७॥
hutāśanas tu bubudhe maṇḍūkasya atha paiśunam. śaśāpa sa tam āsādya na rasān vetsyasīti vai ॥13-84-27॥
[हुताशनः (hutāśanaḥ) - Agni; (the fire god) ; तु (tu) - but; indeed; बुबुधे (bubudhe) - perceived; realized; मण्डूकस्य (maṇḍūkasya) - of the frog; अथ (atha) - then; पैशुनम् (paiśunam) - maliciousness; calumny; slander; शशाप (śaśāpa) - cursed; स (sa) - he; तम् (tam) - him; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; न (na) - not; रसान् (rasān) - juices; tastes; वेत्स्यसि (vetsyasi) - you will obtain; you will enjoy; इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed; surely;]
(Agni indeed perceived the malice of the frog; then he, having approached him, cursed (him): "You will not obtain tastes," thus indeed.)
Agni perceived the frog’s maliciousness and, approaching him, cursed him: "You will not enjoy tastes." (13-84-27)
तं स संयुज्य शापेन मण्डूकं पावको ययौ। अन्यत्र वासाय विभुर्न च देवानदर्शयत् ॥१३-८४-२८॥
taṁ sa saṁyujya śāpena maṇḍūkaṁ pāvako yayau। anyatra vāsāya vibhur na ca devān adarśayat ॥13-84-28॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; स (sa) - he; संयुज्य (saṁyujya) - having joined; having afflicted; शापेन (śāpena) - with a curse; मण्डूकं (maṇḍūkaṁ) - frog; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - Pāvaka; Fire; ययौ (yayau) - went; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; वासाय (vāsāya) - for dwelling; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - the powerful one; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; देवान् (devān) - the gods; अदर्शयत् (adarśayat) - showed;]
(Him he having afflicted with a curse—the frog—Pāvaka went. Elsewhere for dwelling the powerful one not and the gods showed.)
Pāvaka, having afflicted the frog with a curse, went elsewhere to dwell. The powerful one did not show himself to the gods. (13-84-28)
देवास्त्वनुग्रहं चक्रुर्मण्डूकानां भृगूद्वह। यत्तच्छृणु महाबाहो गदतो मम सर्वशः ॥१३-८४-२९॥
devās tvanugrahaṃ cakrur maṇḍūkānāṃ bhṛgūdvaha। yat tac chṛṇu mahābāho gadato mama sarvaśaḥ ॥13-84-29॥
[देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; त् (t) - indeed; अनुग्रहम् (anugraham) - favour; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - performed; मण्डूकानाम् (maṇḍūkānām) - of the frogs; भृगूद्धव (bhṛgūdvaha) - O best of the Bhṛgus; यत् (yat) - what; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुणु (śṛṇu) - hear; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; गदतः (gadataḥ) - (from) speaking; मम (mama) - of me; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - altogether;]
(The gods indeed performed a favour for the frogs, O best of the Bhṛgus. What that is, hear, O mighty-armed, from my entire narration.)
The gods showed favour to the frogs, O best of the Bhṛgus. Hear in full what that was, O mighty-armed, as I recount it to you. (13-84-29)

The gods said:
अग्निशापादजिह्वापि रसज्ञानबहिष्कृताः। सरस्वतीं बहुविधां यूयमुच्चारयिष्यथ ॥१३-८४-३०॥
agniśāpād jihvā api rasa-jñāna-bahiṣkṛtāḥ। sarasvatīṃ bahu-vidhāṃ yūyam uccārayiṣyatha ॥13-84-30॥
[अग्निशापात् (agniśāpāt) - from the curse of Agni; जिह्वा (jihvā) - tongue; अपि (api) - even; रसज्ञानबहिष्कृताः (rasa-jñāna-bahiṣkṛtāḥ) - deprived of the knowledge of taste; सरस्वतीम् (sarasvatīm) - Sarasvatī (speech, language); बहुविधाम् (bahu-vidhām) - of many kinds; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (all); उच्चारयिष्यथ (uccārayiṣyatha) - will utter;]
(Even tongues deprived of the knowledge of taste from the curse of Agni, you all will utter Sarasvatī (speech) of many kinds.)
Though your tongues, due to Agni's curse, are deprived of the sense of taste, you all will still utter speech (Sarasvatī) in many forms. (13-84-30)
बिलवासगतांश्चैव निरादानानचेतसः। गतासूनपि वः शुष्कान्भूमिः सन्धारयिष्यति ॥ तमोगतायामपि च निशायां विचरिष्यथ ॥१३-८४-३१॥
bilavāsagatāṁścaiva nirādānānacetasaḥ। gatāsūnapi vaḥ śuṣkānbhūmiḥ sandhārayiṣyati ॥ tamogatāyāmapi ca niśāyāṁ vicariṣyatha ॥13-84-31॥
[बिलवासगतान् (bilavāsagatān) - gone into holes; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; निरादानान् (nirādānān) - those bereft of possessions; अचेतसः (acetasaḥ) - unconscious; गतासून् (gatāsūn) - those whose life-breath has departed; अपि (api) - even; वः (vaḥ) - you; शुष्कान् (śuṣkān) - dry; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; सन्धारयिष्यति (sandhārayiṣyati) - shall support; तमोगतायाम् (tamogatāyām) - when darkness has come; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; निशायाम् (niśāyām) - at night; विचरिष्यथ (vicariṣyatha) - you will wander;]
(Gone into holes and indeed those bereft of possessions, unconscious, those whose life-breath has departed, even your dry (bodies), the earth shall support. When darkness has come and even at night, you will wander.)
Those of you who have crawled into holes, have lost possessions, are unconscious, or have died—even your dry bodies will be supported by the earth. When darkness falls, you will also wander about at night. (13-84-31)
इत्युक्त्वा तांस्ततो देवाः पुनरेव महीमिमाम्। परीयुर्ज्वलनस्यार्थे न चाविन्दन्हुताशनम् ॥१३-८४-३२॥
ity uktvā tāṃs tato devāḥ puna revam imāṃ mahīm। pariyur jvalanasya arthe na ca avindan hutāśanam॥13-84-32॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ताम् (tām) - them; ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; परीयुः (pariyuḥ) - wandered around; ज्वलनस्य (jvalanasya) - of (the) fire; अर्थे (arthe) - for the purpose; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अविन्दन् (avindan) - did (they) find; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - fire;]
(Thus having spoken to them, then the gods again indeed this earth wandered around for the purpose of fire, and did not find the fire.)
Thus, having said this to them, the gods again searched this earth for fire, but they did not find (the) fire. (13-84-32)
अथ तान्द्विरदः कश्चित्सुरेन्द्रद्विरदोपमः। अश्वत्थस्थोऽग्निरित्येवं प्राह देवान्भृगूद्वह ॥१३-८४-३३॥
atha tān dviradaḥ kaścit surendra-dviradopamaḥ। aśvattha-sthaḥ agniḥ iti evam prāha devān bhṛgūdvaha॥13-84-33॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तान् (tān) - those (them); द्विरदः (dviradaḥ) - the elephant; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; सुरेन्द्रद्विरदोपमः (surendra-dviradopamaḥ) - equal to the elephant of the lord of gods (indra’s elephant); अश्वत्थस्थः (aśvattha-sthaḥ) - standing on the aśvattha (sacred fig) tree; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni (the fire god); इति (iti) - thus; एवं (evam) - in this way; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; देवान् (devān) - to the gods; भृगूद्वह (bhṛgūdvaha) - O best of the Bhṛgus;]
(Then that elephant, someone equal to the elephant of the lord of gods, (who was) standing on the aśvattha tree, Agni, thus in this way, spoke to the gods, O best of the Bhṛgus.)
Then, someone equal to Indra’s elephant, that elephant, Agni standing on the aśvattha tree, thus spoke to the gods, O best of the Bhṛgus. (13-84-33)
शशाप ज्वलनः सर्वान्द्विरदान्क्रोधमूर्छितः। प्रतीपा भवतां जिह्वा भवित्रीति भृगूद्वह ॥१३-८४-३४॥
śaśāpa jvalanaḥ sarvān dviradān krodhamūrcchitaḥ। pratīpā bhavatāṃ jihvā bhavitrīti bhṛgūdvaha ॥13-84-34॥
[शशाप (śaśāpa) - he cursed; ज्वलनः (jvalanaḥ) - Agni (the fire god); सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; द्विरदान् (dviradān) - elephants; क्रोधमूर्छितः (krodhamūrcchitaḥ) - overcome with anger; प्रतीपा (pratīpā) - opposed; contrary; भवतां (bhavatām) - of you all; जिह्वा (jihvā) - tongue; भवित्री (bhavitri) - will become; इति (iti) - thus; भृगूद्वह (bhṛgūdvaha) - O best of the Bhṛgus;]
(He cursed Agni all elephants, overcome with anger: "Opposed will become your tongue," thus, O best of the Bhṛgus. (13-84-34))
Overcome with anger, Agni cursed all the elephants: "Your tongue will become contrary," thus he said, O best of the Bhṛgus. (13-84-34)
इत्युक्त्वा निःसृतोऽश्वत्थादग्निर्वारणसूचितः। प्रविवेश शमीगर्भमथ वह्निः सुषुप्सया ॥१३-८४-३५॥
ity-uktvā niḥsṛto'śvatthād agnir vāraṇa-sūcitaḥ। praviveśa śamī-garbham atha vahniḥ suṣupsayā॥13-84-35॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; निःसृतः (niḥsṛtaḥ) - departed; अश्वत्थात् (aśvatthāt) - from the aśvattha tree (sacred fig); अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni (the fire); वारणसूचितः (vāraṇa-sūcitaḥ) - indicated by elephants; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; शमीगर्भम् (śamī-garbham) - the womb (interior) of the śamī tree; अथ (atha) - then; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - the fire; सुषुप्सया (suṣupsayā) - with the desire to sleep;]
(Thus having spoken, departed from the aśvattha tree Agni, indicated by elephants, entered the womb of the śamī tree, then the fire, with the desire to sleep.)
Having thus spoken, Agni departed from the aśvattha tree, indicated by the elephants, and then the fire, wishing to sleep, entered into the womb of the śamī tree. (13-84-35)
अनुग्रहं तु नागानां यं चक्रुः शृणु तं प्रभो। देवा भृगुकुलश्रेष्ठ प्रीताः सत्यपराक्रमाः ॥१३-८४-३६॥
anugrahaṁ tu nāgānāṁ yaṁ cakruḥ śṛṇu taṁ prabho। devā bhṛgukulaśreṣṭha prītāḥ satyaparākramaḥ ॥13-84-36॥
[अनुग्रहं (anugraham) - favor; compassion; तु (tu) - indeed; but; नागानां (nāgānām) - of the nāgas; (serpent-beings;) यं (yaṁ) - which; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they did; (performed;) शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; (listen;) तं (taṁ) - that; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; देवा (devāḥ) - the gods; भृगुकुलश्रेष्ठ (bhṛgukulaśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bhṛgu family; प्रीताः (prītāḥ) - pleased; सत्यपराक्रमाः (satyaparākramāḥ) - truly valiant; (of true prowess;);]
(Indeed, O lord, the favor to the nāgas which the gods, truly valiant and pleased, performed—hear that, O best of the Bhṛgu family.)
O best of the Bhṛgu family, O lord, listen to the favor that the gods, pleased and truly valiant, showed to the nāgas. (13-84-36)

प्रतीपया जिह्वयापि सर्वाहारान्करिष्यथ। वाचं चोच्चारयिष्यध्वमुच्चैरव्यञ्जिताक्षरम् ॥ इत्युक्त्वा पुनरेवाग्निमनुसस्रुर्दिवौकसः ॥१३-८४-३७॥
pratīpayā jihvayāpi sarvāhārān kariṣyatha. vācaṃ coccārayiṣyadhvam uccair avyañjitākṣaram ॥ ity uktvā punar evāgnim anusasrur divaukasah ॥13-84-37॥
[प्रतीपया (pratīpayā) - contrary; जिह्वया (jihvayā) - with tongue; अपि (api) - even; सर्वाहारान् (sarvāhārān) - all foods; करिष्यथ (kariṣyatha) - you will do; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; च (ca) - and; उच्चारयिष्यध्वम् (uccārayiṣyadhvam) - you will utter; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - loudly; अव्यञ्जिताक्षरम् (avyañjitākṣaram) - with indistinct letters; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अग्निम् (agnim) - Agni; अनुसस्रुः (anusasruḥ) - they followed; दिवौकसः (divaukasah) - the celestials;]
(Contrary with tongue even all foods you will do. Speech and you will utter loudly with indistinct letters. Thus having spoken, again indeed Agni they followed, the celestials. (13-84-37))
Even with your tongue acting contrariwise, you will be able to take all foods, and you will utter speech loudly with indistinct letters. Having thus spoken, the celestials again followed Agni. (13-84-37)
अश्वत्थान्निःसृतश्चाग्निः शमीगर्भगतस्तदा। शुकेन ख्यापितो विप्र तं देवाः समुपाद्रवन् ॥१३-८४-३८॥
aśvatthān niḥsṛtaś cāgniḥ śamī-garbha-gatās tadā. śukena khyāpito vipra taṃ devāḥ samupādravan ॥13-84-38॥
[अश्वत्थात् (aśvatthāt) - from the aśvattha (sacred fig tree); निःसृतः (niḥsṛtaḥ) - emerged; च (ca) - and; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; शमीगर्भगतः (śamī-garbha-gataḥ) - having entered (gone into) the womb (interior) of the śamī (acacia) tree; तदा (tadā) - then; शुकेन (śukena) - by the śuka (bird); ख्यापितः (khyāpitaḥ) - made known; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; तं (tam) - him / it; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; समुपाद्रवन् (samupādravan) - approached together;]
(Fire having emerged from the aśvattha (fig) tree and then having entered into the interior of the śamī (acacia) tree, O brāhmaṇa, having been made known by the śuka bird, the gods approached it.)
O brāhmaṇa, fire having emerged from the aśvattha tree and entered the womb of the śamī tree, was revealed by the śuka bird; the gods then approached it. (13-84-38)
शशाप शुकमग्निस्तु वाग्विहीनो भविष्यसि। जिह्वां चावर्तयामास तस्यापि हुतभुक्तदा ॥१३-८४-३९॥
śaśāpa śukam agniḥ tu vāg-vihīnaḥ bhaviṣyasi। jihvāṃ ca āvartayām āsa tasya api hutabhuk tadā ॥13-84-39॥

(He cursed the parrot: "You will become deprived of speech." And Agni then also rolled back his tongue.)
Agni cursed the parrot, saying, "You will become unable to speak." Then, at that time, Agni also rolled back his tongue. (13-84-39)
दृष्ट्वा तु ज्वलनं देवाः शुकमूचुर्दयान्विताः। भविता न त्वमत्यन्तं शकुने नष्टवागिति॥१३-८४-४०॥
dṛṣṭvā tu jvalanaṁ devāḥ śukam ūcur dayānvitāḥ. bhavitā na tvam atyantaṁ śakune naṣṭavāg iti ॥13-84-40॥

(Having seen the fire, but the gods said to the parrot, moved by compassion: "Will not you completely, O parrot, lose speech," thus.)
Seeing the fire, the gods, moved by compassion, said to the parrot: "You will not entirely lose your speech, O parrot." (13-84-40)
आवृत्तजिह्वस्य सतो वाक्यं कान्तं भविष्यति। बालस्येव प्रवृद्धस्य कलमव्यक्तमद्भुतम् ॥१३-८४-४१॥
āvṛttajihvasya sato vākyaṃ kāntaṃ bhaviṣyati। bālasyeva pravṛddhasya kalamavyaktam adbhutam ॥13-84-41॥
[आवृत्तजिह्वस्य (āvṛttajihvasya) - of one with a restrained tongue; सतः (sataḥ) - of the being; of the person; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; कान्तम् (kāntam) - pleasing; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; बालस्यैव (bālasya eva) - just as (that) of a child; प्रवृद्धस्य (pravṛddhasya) - of the grown (person); कलम् (kalam) - voice; अव्यक्तम् (avyaktam) - indistinct; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - marvelous;]
(Of one with a restrained tongue, of the person, speech pleasing will become. Just as of a child, of the grown person, voice indistinct marvelous.)
The speech of a person with a restrained tongue will become pleasing, just as the voice of a grown person, though marvelous, is as indistinct as that of a child. (13-84-41)
इत्युक्त्वा तं शमीगर्भे वह्निमालक्ष्य देवताः। तदेवायतनं चक्रुः पुण्यं सर्वक्रियास्वपि ॥१३-८४-४२॥
ity uktvā taṁ śamī-garbhe vahnim ālakṣya devatāḥ। tad eva āyatanam cakruḥ puṇyaṁ sarva-kriyāsu api॥13-84-42॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तं (tam) - him; शमीगर्भे (śamī-garbhe) - in the interior of the śamī tree; वह्निम् (vahnim) - fire; आलक्ष्य (ālakṣya) - having perceived; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities; तत् (tat) - that; एव (eva) - indeed; आयतनम् (āyatanam) - abode; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - sacred; सर्वक्रियासु (sarva-kriyāsu) - in all sacred rites; अपि (api) - also;]
(Thus having spoken, having perceived the fire in the interior of the śamī tree, the deities indeed made that (place) the abode, sacred also in all rites.)
Having said thus, when the deities saw the fire within the śamī tree, they made that very place its abode, which is held sacred in all rituals. (13-84-42)
ततःप्रभृति चाप्यग्निः शमीगर्भेषु दृश्यते। उत्पादने तथोपायमनुजग्मुश्च मानवाः ॥१३-८४-४३॥
tataḥ prabhṛti cāpy agniḥ śamī-garbheṣu dṛśyate। utpādane tathopāyam anujagmuś ca mānavāḥ ॥13-84-43॥

(From that time onward and also fire within the interiors of the śamī wood is seen. For the producing likewise means have followed and humans.)
From that time onward, fire is seen within the interiors of the śamī wood, and humans have thus adopted this means for producing it. (13-84-43)
आपो रसातले यास्तु संसृष्टाश्चित्रभानुना। ताः पर्वतप्रस्रवणैरूष्मां मुञ्चन्ति भार्गव ॥ पावकेनाधिशयता सन्तप्तास्तस्य तेजसा ॥१३-८४-४४॥
āpo rasātale yāstu saṁsṛṣṭāś citrabhānunā। tāḥ parvataprasravaṇair ūṣmāṁ muñcanti bhārgava॥ pāvakenādhiśayatā santaptās tasya tejasā॥13-84-44॥
[आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; रसातले (rasātale) - in the netherworld; याः (yāḥ) - which; तु (tu) - but; संसृष्टाः (saṁsṛṣṭāḥ) - mixed; चित्रभानुना (citrabhānunā) - with Citrabhānu (the Sun); ताः (tāḥ) - those (waters); पर्वतप्रस्रवणैः (parvataprasravaṇaiḥ) - by mountain outflows; ऊष्माम् (ūṣmām) - heat; मुन्चन्ति (muñcanti) - release; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O descendant of Bhṛgu; पावकेन (pāvakena) - by fire; अधिशयता (adhiśayatā) - being pervaded by; सन्तप्ताः (santaptāḥ) - heated; तस्य (tasya) - by his; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance;]
(Waters in the netherworld which, mixed with Citrabhānu, those (waters), by mountain outflows, heat release, O Bhārgava. By fire being pervaded, heated by his brilliance.)
O Bhārgava, the waters in the netherworld, which have been mixed with Citrabhānu (the Sun), those waters, heated and pervaded by his radiance, release their heat through mountain springs by the power of fire. (13-84-44)
ततोऽग्निर्देवता दृष्ट्वा बभूव व्यथितस्तदा। किमागमनमित्येवं तानपृच्छत पावकः ॥१३-८४-४५॥
tato'gnirdevatā dṛṣṭvā babhūva vyathitastadā। kimāgamanamityevaṃ tānapṛcchata pāvakaḥ ॥13-84-45॥

(Then Agni, having seen the gods, became disturbed then. "What [is] the arrival thus?" in this way, he asked them, Pāvaka.)
Then Agni, having seen the gods, became disturbed at that moment. Pāvaka (Fire) asked them, "What is the reason for your arrival?" (13-84-45)
तमूचुर्विबुधाः सर्वे ते चैव परमर्षयः। त्वां नियोक्ष्यामहे कार्ये तद्भवान्कर्तुमर्हति ॥ कृते च तस्मिन्भविता तवापि सुमहान्गुणः ॥१३-८४-४६॥
tamūcur vibudhāḥ sarve te caiva paramarṣayaḥ। tvāṃ niyokṣyāmahe kārye tadbhavāṃ kartum arhati॥ kṛte ca tasmin bhavitā tavāpi sumahān guṇaḥ॥ 13-84-46॥

(Him said gods all, they and indeed great sages: you we shall appoint in the task, that you are worthy to do. When it is done and in that, will be yours also very great merit.)
All the gods and indeed those great sages said to him: "We shall appoint you for this task, for you are worthy to carry it out. And when this is accomplished, there will be very great merit for you also." (13-84-46)

brūta yadbhavatāṁ kāryaṁ sarvaṁ kartāsmi tatsurāḥ। bhavatāṁ hi niyojyo'ham mā vo'trāstu vicāraṇā ॥13-84-47॥
[ब्रूत (brūta) - speak; (you all) tell; यत् (yat) - what; that which; भवताम् (bhavatām) - your; (of you all); कार्यं (kāryam) - matter; work; task; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; everything; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; agent; performer; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तत् (tat) - that; सुराः (surāḥ) - O gods; भवताम् (bhavatām) - your; (of you all); हि (hi) - indeed; certainly; नियोज्यः (niyojyaḥ) - to be employed; to be appointed; अहम् (aham) - I; मा (mā) - not; वः (vaḥ) - of you; your; अत्र (atra) - here; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - discussion; consideration;]
(Speak what your task is, all that I am the doer, that, O gods. Of yours indeed to be employed I (am); let there not be of you here discussion.)
Tell me what task you wish, O gods; I will accomplish all that. Truly, I am to be employed by you; let there be no discussion about this for you here. (13-84-47)

असुरस्तारको नाम ब्रह्मणो वरदर्पितः। अस्मान्प्रबाधते वीर्याद्वधस्तस्य विधीयताम् ॥१३-८४-४८॥
asuras tārako nāma brahmaṇo vara-darpitaḥ। asmān prabādhate vīryāt vadhas tasya vidhīyatām॥13-84-48॥
[असुरः (asuraḥ) - demon; spirit; तारकः (tārakaḥ) - Tāraka; (proper noun; demon's name); नाम (nāma) - by name; called; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahma; वर-दर्पितः (vara-darpitaḥ) - emboldened by the boon; made proud by the boon; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; प्रबाधते (prabādhate) - torments; oppresses; वीर्यात् (vīryāt) - by (his) strength; due to power; वधः (vadhaḥ) - slaying; destruction; तस्य (tasya) - his; of him; विधीयताम् (vidhīyatām) - let it be arranged; let it be accomplished; ॥१३-८४-४८॥ (॥13-84-48॥) -;]
(The demon named Tāraka, emboldened by Brahma's boon, torments us by (his) strength; let his slaying be accomplished. "13-84-48")
The demon Tāraka, empowered by a boon from Brahma, is tormenting us with his strength; let arrangements be made for his destruction. (13-84-48)
इमान्देवगणांस्तात प्रजापतिगणांस्तथा। ऋषींश्चापि महाभागान्परित्रायस्व पावक ॥१३-८४-४९॥
imān devagaṇāṁs tāta prajāpatigaṇāṁs tathā। ṛṣīṁś cāpi mahābhāgān paritrāyasva pāvaka ॥13-84-49॥
[इमान् (imān) - these (accusative plural masculine); देवगणान् (devagaṇān) - groups of gods; तात (tāta) - O dear one; प्रजापतिगणान् (prajāpatigaṇān) - groups of progenitors (Prajāpatis); तथा (tathā) - as well; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - sages; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; महाभागान् (mahābhāgān) - greatly fortunate ones; परित्रायस्व (paritrāyasva) - please protect; पावक (pāvaka) - O fire;]
(These groups of gods, O dear one, groups of progenitors as well, sages also, greatly fortunate ones—please protect, O fire.)
O fire, please protect these groups of gods, groups of progenitors, and also the greatly fortunate sages, O dear one. (13-84-49)
अपत्यं तेजसा युक्तं प्रवीरं जनय प्रभो। यद्भयं नोऽसुरात्तस्मान्नाशयेद्धव्यवाहन ॥१३-८४-५०॥
apatyaṃ tejasā yuktaṃ pravīraṃ janaya prabho। yad bhayaṃ no'surāt tasmān nāśayet dhavyavāhana ॥13-84-50॥
[अपत्यं (apatyaṃ) - offspring; तेजसा (tejasā) - with brilliance; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - endowed; प्रवीरं (pravīraṃ) - of excellent heroism; जनय (janaya) - produce; प्रभो (prabho) - O Lord; यत् (yad) - which; भयं (bhayaṃ) - fear; नः (naḥ) - our; असुरात् (asurāt) - from demon; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; नाशयेत् (nāśayet) - may destroy; धव्यवाहन (dhavyavāhana) - O Agni (carrier of oblations);]
(Offspring with brilliance endowed, of excellent heroism, produce, O Lord. Which fear our from demon, from that may destroy, O Agni.)
O Lord, produce an offspring endowed with brilliance and excellent heroism. Whatever fear we have from the demon, may O Agni, destroy it. (13-84-50)
शप्तानां नो महादेव्या नान्यदस्ति परायणम्। अन्यत्र भवतो वीर्यं तस्मात्त्रायस्व नस्ततः ॥१३-८४-५१॥
śaptānāṃ no mahādevyā nānyad asti parāyaṇam। anyatra bhavato vīryaṃ tasmāt trāyasva nas tataḥ॥13-84-51॥
[शप्तानाम् (śaptānām) - of the cursed; नः (naḥ) - of us; महादेव्या (mahādevyā) - by Mahādevī; न (na) - not; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; अस्ति (asti) - is; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - refuge; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - your; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - might; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्रायस्व (trāyasva) - protect; नः (naḥ) - us; ततः (tataḥ) - from that;]
(Of the cursed us by Mahādevī, not other is refuge; elsewhere your might (exists); therefore protect us from that.)
For us, cursed by Mahādevī, there is no other refuge; elsewhere your might (is effective); therefore, protect us from that. (13-84-51)
इत्युक्तः स तथेत्युक्त्वा भगवान्हव्यकव्यभुक्। जगामाथ दुराधर्षो गङ्गां भागीरथीं प्रति ॥१३-८४-५२॥

(Thus having been addressed, he, having said 'so be it,' the venerable eater of oblations to gods and ancestors, then, unassailable, went towards the Gaṅgā, the Bhāgīrathī.)
Thus addressed, he replied, 'So be it,' and the venerable, unassailable eater of oblations to gods and ancestors then proceeded towards the Gaṅgā, the river Bhāgīrathī. (13-84-52)
तया चाप्यभवन्मिश्रो गर्भश्चास्याभवत्तदा। ववृधे स तदा गर्भः कक्षे कृष्णगतिर्यथा ॥१३-८४-५३॥
tayā cāpy abhavan miśro garbhaś cāsy abhavat tadā। vavṛdhe sa tadā garbhaḥ kakṣe kṛṣṇagatir yathā॥13-84-53॥
[तया (tayā) - by her; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; मिश्रः (miśraḥ) - mixed; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then; ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; सः (saḥ) - that; तदा (tadā) - then; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; कक्षे (kakṣe) - in the womb; कृष्णगतिः (kṛṣṇagatiḥ) - with dark movement; यथा (yathā) - as, like;]
(By her also, became mixed, and the embryo became his then. That embryo then grew in the womb, like one with dark movement.)
Through her, a mixed embryo was also formed, and then that embryo of his grew in the womb, like (one) with dark motion. (13-84-53)
तेजसा तस्य गर्भस्य गङ्गा विह्वलचेतना। सन्तापमगमत्तीव्रं सा सोढुं न शशाक ह ॥१३-८४-५४॥
tejasā tasya garbhasya gaṅgā vihvalacetanā। santāpam agamat tīvraṃ sā soḍhuṃ na śaśāka ha ॥13-84-54॥
[तेजसा (tejasā) - by the brilliance; तस्य (tasya) - of his; गर्भस्य (garbhasya) - of the embryo; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā (the river goddess); विह्वलचेतना (vihvalacetanā) - with agitated consciousness; सन्तापम् (santāpam) - torment; अगमत् (agamat) - attained; तीव्रं (tīvraṃ) - intense; सा (sā) - she; सोढुं (soḍhuṃ) - to endure; न (na) - not; शशाक (śaśāka) - was able; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(By the brilliance of his embryo, Gaṅgā, with agitated consciousness, attained intense torment. She was not able indeed to endure it.)
On account of the brilliance of his embryo, the goddess Gaṅgā, her mind greatly agitated, experienced severe torment. She was truly unable to bear it. (13-84-54)
आहिते ज्वलनेनाथ गर्भे तेजःसमन्विते। गङ्गायामसुरः कश्चिद्भैरवं नादमुत्सृजत् ॥१३-८४-५५॥
āhite jvalanenātha garbhe tejaḥsamanvite। gaṅgāyāmasuraḥ kaścidbhairavaṃ nādamutsṛjat ॥13-84-55॥
[आहिते (āhite) - placed upon; established; ज्वलनेन (jvalanena) - by fire; with flaming; अथ (atha) - then; thereafter; गर्भे (garbhe) - in the womb; inside; तेजःसमन्विते (tejaḥsamanvite) - endowed with brilliance; possessed of energy; गङ्गायाम् (gaṅgāyām) - in the Ganga; असुरः (asuraḥ) - a demon; the asura; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; a certain; भैरवं (bhairavam) - terrifying; formidable; नादम् (nādam) - sound; roar; उत्सृजत् (utsṛjat) - uttered; emitted;]
(Placed upon by fire then in the womb endowed with brilliance, in the Ganga a certain asura emitted a terrifying sound.)
When fire was established and (the being) endowed with brilliance was within the womb, then a certain asura in the Ganga emitted a terrifying sound. (13-84-55)
अबुद्धापतितेनाथ नादेन विपुलेन सा। वित्रस्तोद्भ्रान्तनयना गङ्गा विप्लुतलोचना ॥ विसञ्ज्ञा नाशकद्गर्भं सन्धारयितुमात्मना ॥१३-८४-५६॥
abuddhāpatitenātha nādena vipulena sā। vitrastodbhrāntanayanā gaṅgā viplutalocanā॥ visañjñā nāśakadgarbhaṃ sandhārayitumātmanā॥13-84-56॥

(By the unexpectedly-fallen, then (suddenly-occurred), loud sound, she, terrified, with agitated eyes, Gaṅgā, with bewildered eyes, unconscious, was unable to sustain the fetus of Śakada with her self.)
Then, startled by the sudden, loud sound, Gaṅgā—terrified, her eyes wide and bewildered—lost consciousness and was unable to sustain the child of Śakada within herself. (13-84-56)
सा तु तेजःपरीताङ्गी कम्पमाना च जाह्नवी। उवाच वचनं विप्र तदा गर्भबलोद्धता ॥ न ते शक्तास्मि भगवंस्तेजसोऽस्य विधारणे ॥१३-८४-५७॥
sā tu tejaḥ-parītāṅgī kampamānā ca jāhnavī। uvāca vacanaṃ vipra tadā garbha-bala-uddhatā॥ na te śaktāsmi bhagavan tejaso'sya vidhāraṇe॥13-84-57॥
[सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; तेजःपरीताङ्गी (tejaḥ-parītāṅgī) - her body enveloped by brilliance; कम्पमाना (kampamānā) - trembling; च (ca) - and; जाह्नवी (jāhnavī) - Jāhnavī (the river Ganges); उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; वचनं (vacanam) - words; विप्र (vipra) - O Brāhmaṇa; तदा (tadā) - then; गर्भबलोद्धता (garbha-bala-uddhatā) - agitated by the force of the embryo; न (na) - not; ते (te) - by you; शक्तास्मि (śaktāsmi) - I am able; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; तेजसः (tejasah) - of the energy; अस्य (asya) - this; विधारणे (vidhāraṇe) - in upholding;]
(She but with body enveloped by brilliance, trembling and Jāhnavī, spoke words, O Brāhmaṇa, then agitated by the force of the embryo. Not by you I am able, O revered one, in upholding this energy.)
But she, Jāhnavī—her body enveloped by brilliance, trembling and agitated by the force of the embryo—then spoke these words, O Brāhmaṇa: "O revered one, I am not able to sustain this energy." (13-84-57)
विमूढास्मि कृतानेन तथास्वास्थ्यं कृतं परम्। विह्वला चास्मि भगवंस्तेजो नष्टं च मेऽनघ ॥१३-८४-५८॥
vimūḍhāsmi kṛtānena tathāsvāsthyaṃ kṛtaṃ param। vihvalā cāsmi bhagavaṃstejo naṣṭaṃ ca me'nagha ॥13-84-58॥
[विमूढा (vimūḍhā) - bewildered; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; कृता (kṛtā) - caused; अनेन (anena) - by this; तथा (tathā) - thus; अस्वास्थ्यं (asvāsthyaṃ) - illness; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; परम् (param) - extreme; विह्वला (vihvalā) - distressed; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; तेजः (tejaḥ) - vigor; नष्टं (naṣṭaṃ) - lost; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Bewildered I am, caused by this, thus illness has been done, extreme; distressed and I am, O revered one, vigor lost and my, O sinless one.)
I am bewildered by this, and have thus suffered great illness; I am also distressed, O revered one, and my vigor is lost, O sinless one. (13-84-58)
धारणे नास्य शक्ताहं गर्भस्य तपतां वर। उत्स्रक्ष्येऽहमिमं दुःखान्न तु कामात्कथञ्चन ॥१३-८४-५९॥
dhāraṇe nāsya śaktāhaṁ garbhasya tapatāṁ vara। utsrakṣye'hamimaṁ duḥkhānna tu kāmātkathañcana॥13-84-59॥
[धारणे (dhāraṇe) - in sustaining; न (na) - not; अस्य (asya) - of this; शक्ता (śaktā) - able; अहम् (aham) - I; गर्भस्य (garbhasya) - of the embryo; तपतां (tapatām) - of those who are austere; वर (vara) - best; उत्स्रक्ष्ये (utsrakṣye) - I shall let go; अहम् (aham) - I; इमम् (imam) - this; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - because of pain; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; कामात् (kāmāt) - from desire; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
(In sustaining not of this I am able, of the embryo, O best among the austere. I shall let go this because of pain, not however from desire in any way.)
O best among the austere, I am not able to sustain this embryo. I shall let it go because of pain, but not at all from desire. (13-84-59)
न चेतसोऽस्ति संस्पर्शो मम देव विभावसो। आपदर्थे हि सम्बन्धः सुसूक्ष्मोऽपि महाद्युते ॥१३-८४-६०॥
na cetaso'sti saṃsparśo mama deva vibhāvaso। āpadarthe hi sambandhaḥ susūkṣmo'pi mahādyute ॥13-84-60॥
[न (na) - not; चेतसः (cetasaḥ) - of the mind; अस्ति (asti) - there is; संस्पर्शः (saṃsparśaḥ) - contact; मम (mama) - my; देव (deva) - O god; विभावसः (vibhāvaso) - O Agni (Fire); आपदर्थे (āpad-arthe) - at the time of misfortune; हि (hi) - indeed; सम्बन्धः (sambandhaḥ) - connection; सुसूक्ष्मः (susūkṣmaḥ) - very subtle; अपि (api) - even; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant one;]
(Not of the mind there is contact my O god O Agni. At the time of misfortune indeed connection very subtle even O greatly radiant one.)
O god Agni, there is no contact with my mind; at the time of misfortune, even a very subtle connection matters, O greatly radiant one. (13-84-60)
यदत्र गुणसम्पन्नमितरं वा हुताशन। त्वय्येव तदहं मन्ये धर्माधर्मौ च केवलौ ॥१३-८४-६१॥
yad atra guṇasampannam itaraṃ vā hutāśana। tvayy eva tad ahaṃ manye dharmādharmau ca kevalau ॥13-84-61॥
[यत् (yat) - which; अत्र (atra) - here; गुणसम्पन्नम् (guṇasampannam) - possessed of qualities; इतरम् (itaram) - the other; वा (vā) - or; हुताशन (hutāśana) - O fire; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; एव (eva) - alone; तत् (tat) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; मन्ये (manye) - consider; धर्म-अधर्मौ (dharma-adharmau) - righteousness-unrighteousness; च (ca) - and; केवलौ (kevalau) - both exclusively;]
(Which here (is) possessed of qualities or the other, O fire, in you alone that I consider, and righteousness-unrighteousness both exclusively.)
O Fire, whatever here is virtuous or otherwise—I consider both righteousness and unrighteousness to reside exclusively in you. (13-84-61)
तामुवाच ततो वह्निर्धार्यतां धार्यतामयम्। गर्भो मत्तेजसा युक्तो महागुणफलोदयः ॥१३-८४-६२॥
tām uvāca tato vahnir dhāryatāṃ dhāryatām ayam। garbho mat-tejasā yuktaḥ mahā-guṇa-phala-udayaḥ ॥13-84-62॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वह्निः (vahniḥ) - Agni (the fire god); धार्यताम् (dhāryatām) - let be borne; धार्यताम् (dhāryatām) - let be borne; अयम् (ayam) - this; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; मत्-तेजसा (mat-tejasā) - by my energy; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; महागुण-फल-उदयः (mahā-guṇa-phala-udayaḥ) - manifesting great-virtue-fruit;]
(To her said then Agni: Let be borne, let be borne this embryo, endowed by my energy, manifesting the arising of great virtuous fruits.)
Then Agni said to her: Let this embryo, endowed with my energy and possessing the manifestation of great virtuous qualities, be borne. (13-84-62)
शक्ता ह्यसि महीं कृत्स्नां वोढुं धारयितुं तथा। न हि ते किञ्चिदप्राप्यं मद्रेतोधारणादृते ॥१३-८४-६३॥
śaktā hy asi mahīṁ kṛtsnāṁ voḍhuṁ dhārayituṁ tathā। na hi te kiñcid aprāpyaṁ madretodhāraṇādṛte ॥13-84-63॥
[शक्ता (śaktā) - able; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - you are; महीं (mahīṁ) - the earth; कृत्स्नां (kṛtsnāṁ) - entire; वोढुम् (voḍhum) - to bear; धारयितुम् (dhārayitum) - to sustain; तथा (tathā) - likewise; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - for you; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अप्राप्यम् (aprāpyaṁ) - unattainable; मद् (mad) - my; रेतः (retaḥ) - seed; धारणात् (dhāraṇāt) - from holding; ऋते (ṛte) - except;]
(Able indeed you are the entire earth to bear, to sustain likewise. Not indeed for you anything unattainable except my seed from holding.)
You are certainly able to bear and sustain the entire earth; there is indeed nothing unattainable for you except retaining my seed. (13-84-63)
सा वह्निना वार्यमाणा देवैश्चापि सरिद्वरा। समुत्ससर्ज तं गर्भं मेरौ गिरिवरे तदा ॥१३-८४-६४॥
sā vahninā vāryamāṇā devaiś cāpi sarid-varā। samutsasarja taṃ garbhaṃ merau giri-vare tadā॥13-84-64॥
[सा (sā) - she; वह्निना (vahninā) - by Agni (the fire-god); वार्यमाणा (vāryamāṇā) - being obstructed; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सरिद्वरा (sarid-varā) - the best river; समुत्ससर्ज (samutsasarja) - completely released; तं (taṃ) - that; गर्भं (garbhaṃ) - embryo; मेरौ (merau) - on Meru; गिरिवरे (giri-vare) - on the best mountain; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(She, being obstructed by Agni and also by the gods, the best river, completely released that embryo then on Meru, the best mountain.)
She, the foremost river, when restrained by Agni and the gods, then released that embryo upon Meru, the best of mountains. (13-84-64)
समर्था धारणे चापि रुद्रतेजःप्रधर्षिता। नाशकत्तं तदा गर्भं सन्धारयितुमोजसा ॥१३-८४-६५॥
samarthā dhāraṇe cāpi rudratejaḥ-pradharṣitā। nāśakat taṃ tadā garbhaṃ sandhārayitum ojasā ॥13-84-65॥
[समर्था (samarthā) - capable; धारणे (dhāraṇe) - in holding; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; रुद्रतेजःप्रधर्षिता (rudratejaḥ-pradharṣitā) - oppressed by Rudra's energy; नाशकत्तं (nā śakat taṃ) - was not able that; तदा (tadā) - then; गर्भं (garbhaṃ) - embryo; सन्धारयितुम् (sandhārayitum) - to bear; ओजसा (ojasā) - by strength;]
(Capable in holding and even, oppressed by Rudra's energy, she was not able then that embryo to bear by strength.)
Even though she was capable of holding, being overpowered by Rudra's energy, she was not able at that time to bear the embryo by her strength. (13-84-65)
सा समुत्सृज्य तं दुःखाद्दीप्तवैश्वानरप्रभम्। दर्शयामास चाग्निस्तां तदा गङ्गां भृगूद्वह ॥ पप्रच्छ सरितां श्रेष्ठां कच्चिद्गर्भः सुखोदयः ॥१३-८४-६६॥
sā samutsṛjya taṃ duḥkhāddīptavaiśvānaraprabham। darśayāmāsa cāgnistāṃ tadā gaṅgāṃ bhṛgūdvaha ॥ papraccha saritāṃ śreṣṭhāṃ kaccidgarbhaḥ sukhodayaḥ ॥13-84-66॥
[सा (sā) - she; समुत्सृज्य (samutsṛjya) - having completely abandoned; तं (taṃ) - him; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from sorrow; दीप्तवैश्वानरप्रभम् (dīptavaiśvānaraprabham) - blazing with the radiance of Vaiśvānara (fire); दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; च (ca) - and; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni (the fire god); तां (tāṃ) - her; तदा (tadā) - then; गङ्गां (gaṅgāṃ) - Gaṅgā (the river goddess); भृगूद्वह (bhṛgūdvaha) - O carrier of the Bhṛgus (sage); पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; सरितां (saritām) - of rivers; श्रेष्ठां (śreṣṭhāṃ) - the best; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; offspring; सुखोदयः (sukhodayaḥ) - arising happily;]
(She, having completely abandoned him from sorrow, blazing with the radiance of Vaiśvānara, showed; and Agni then showed her, Gaṅgā, O carrier of the Bhṛgus. (Agni) asked the best of rivers whether the embryo is happily arisen.)
She, overwhelmed by sorrow, abandoned him who was blazing with the radiance of Vaiśvānara. Then Agni showed her to Gaṅgā, O Bhṛgūdvaha. (Agni) asked the best of rivers whether the offspring had arisen without trouble. (13-84-66)
कीदृग्वर्णोऽपि वा देवि कीदृग्रूपश्च दृश्यते। तेजसा केन वा युक्तः सर्वमेतद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥१३-८४-६७॥
kīdṛg-varṇo'pi vā devi kīdṛg-rūpaś ca dṛśyate. tejasā kena vā yuktaḥ sarvam etad bravīhi me ॥13-84-67॥
[कीदृक् (kīdṛk) - of what kind; वर्णः (varṇaḥ) - color; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; देवि (devi) - O goddess; कीदृक् (kīdṛk) - of what kind; रूपः (rūpaḥ) - form; च (ca) - and; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; तेजसा (tejasā) - with brilliance; केन (kena) - by what; वा (vā) - or; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me;]

(Golden-colored that embryo indeed, by brilliance, like fire, (became) gold, pure, shining, illuminated the mountain and.)
That embryo, golden in color, indeed by its brilliance, like fire, became pure shining gold, and lit up the mountain. (13-84-68)
पद्मोत्पलविमिश्राणां ह्रदानामिव शीतलः। गन्धोऽस्य स कदम्बानां तुल्यो वै तपतां वर ॥१३-८४-६९॥
padmotpalavimiśrāṇāṃ hradānām iva śītalaḥ। gandho'sya sa kadambānāṃ tulyo vai tapatāṃ vara ॥13-84-69॥
[पद्मोत्पलविमिश्राणां (padmotpalavimiśrāṇām) - of those mixed with lotuses and blue-lotuses; ह्रदानाम् (hradānām) - of lakes; इव (iva) - like; शीतलः (śītalaḥ) - cool; गन्धः (gandhaḥ) - fragrance; अस्य (asya) - of this; सः (saḥ) - that (fragrance); कदम्बानाम् (kadambānām) - of kadamba trees; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; वै (vai) - indeed; तपताम् (tapatām) - of those who are scorched; वर (vara) - best;]
(Like the coolness of lakes mixed with lotuses and blue-lotuses, the fragrance of this, that of kadamba trees, indeed is equal, O best of those who are scorched.)
O best among the afflicted, the fragrance of this is as cool as the lakes filled with lotuses and blue-lotuses and is equal to that of kadamba trees. (13-84-69)
तेजसा तस्य गर्भस्य भास्करस्येव रश्मिभिः। यद्द्रव्यं परिसंसृष्टं पृथिव्यां पर्वतेषु वा ॥ तत्सर्वं काञ्चनीभूतं समन्तात्प्रत्यदृश्यत ॥१३-८४-७०॥
tejasā tasya garbhasya bhāskarasyeva raśmibhiḥ. yad dravyaṁ parisaṁsṛṣṭaṁ pṛthivyāṁ parvateṣu vā ॥ tatsarvaṁ kāñcanībhūtaṁ samantāt pratyadṛśyata ॥13-84-70॥
[तेजसा (tejasā) - by the radiance; तस्य (tasya) - of him (its); गर्भस्य (garbhasya) - of the womb (inside); भास्करस्येव (bhāskarasyeva) - like the sun's; रश्मिभिः (raśmibhiḥ) - by rays; यद्द्रव्यं (yad dravyaṁ) - whatever substance; परिसंसृष्टं (parisaṁsṛṣṭaṁ) - pervaded; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṁ) - on the earth; पर्वतेषु (parvateṣu) - on the mountains; वा (vā) - or; तत्सर्वं (tatsarvaṁ) - all that; काञ्चनीभूतं (kāñcanībhūtaṁ) - become golden; समन्तात् (samantāt) - on all sides; प्रत्यदृश्यत (pratyadṛśyata) - was seen;]
(By the radiance of him (its) womb, like the sun's by rays, whatever substance pervaded on the earth or on the mountains, all that become golden on all sides was seen.)
By the radiance of its core, like the sun's rays, whatever substance was spread on the earth or on the mountains, all of it was seen to have become golden on every side. (13-84-70)
पर्यधावत शैलांश्च नदीः प्रस्रवणानि च। व्यदीपयत्तेजसा च त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् ॥१३-८४-७१॥
paryadhāvat śailāṁś ca nadīḥ prasravaṇāni ca. vyadīpayat tejasā ca trailokyaṁ sacarācaram ॥13-84-71॥
[पर्यधावत (paryadhāvat) - ran around; circled; शैलान् (śailān) - mountains; च (ca) - and; नदीः (nadīḥ) - rivers; प्रस्रवणानि (prasravaṇāni) - springs; च (ca) - and; व्यदीपयत (vyadīpayat) - illuminated; तेजसा (tejasā) - by radiance; च (ca) - and; त्रैलोक्यम् (trailokyam) - the three worlds; सचराचरम् (sacarācaram) - with moving and unmoving beings;]
(Ran around the mountains and rivers and springs and illuminated with radiance also the three worlds with moving and unmoving beings.)
He circled the mountains, rivers, and springs, and with his radiance illuminated the three worlds, with all that moves and does not move. (13-84-71)
एवंरूपः स भगवान्पुत्रस्ते हव्यवाहन। सूर्यवैश्वानरसमः कान्त्या सोम इवापरः ॥ एवमुक्त्वा तु सा देवी तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥१३-८४-७२॥
evaṁ-rūpaḥ sa bhagavān putras te havyavāhana। sūryavaiśvānara-samaḥ kāntyā soma iva aparaḥ ॥ evam uktvā tu sā devī tatraiva antaradhīyata ॥13-84-72॥

(Having such a form, that illustrious son of yours, O Havyavāhana, equal to Sūrya and Vaiśvānara in splendor, was like another Soma. Thus having spoken, that goddess disappeared right there.)
That son of yours, O Agni, possessed such a form, brilliant like Sūrya and Vaiśvānara, another Soma in splendor. Having spoken thus, the goddess vanished then and there. (13-84-72)
पावकश्चापि तेजस्वी कृत्वा कार्यं दिवौकसाम्। जगामेष्टं ततो देशं तदा भार्गवनन्दन ॥१३-८४-७३॥
pāvakāś cāpi tejasvī kṛtvā kāryaṃ divaukasām। jagāmeṣṭaṃ tato deśaṃ tadā bhārgavanandana ॥13-84-73॥
[पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - Fire (Agni); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - brilliant one; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; कार्यं (kāryam) - the task; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the dwellers of heaven; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; इष्टं (iṣṭam) - desired; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; देशं (deśam) - place; तदा (tadā) - then; भार्गवनन्दन (bhārgavanandana) - son of Bhṛgu (proper noun, epithet for Agni);]
(Fire and also the brilliant one, having done the task of the dwellers of heaven, went to the desired place from there then, the son of Bhṛgu.)
Then Agni, the brilliant one, having accomplished the task of the heavenly beings, went from there to the desired place, O son of Bhṛgu. (13-84-73)
एतैः कर्मगुणैर्लोके नामाग्नेः परिगीयते। हिरण्यरेता इति वै ऋषिभिर्विबुधैस्तथा ॥ पृथिवी च तदा देवी ख्याता वसुमतीति वै ॥१३-८४-७४॥
etaiḥ karma-guṇair loke nāma agneḥ parigīyate। hiraṇya-retā iti vai ṛṣibhir vibudhaiḥ tathā ॥ pṛthivī ca tadā devī khyātā vasumatīti vai ॥13-84-74॥
[एतैः (etaiḥ) - by these; कर्मगुणैः (karma-guṇaiḥ) - by the qualities and actions; लोके (loke) - in the world; नाम (nāma) - the name; अग्नेः (agneḥ) - of Agni; परिगीयते (parigīyate) - is proclaimed; हिरण्यरेता (hiraṇya-retā) - Hiranya-Retā (golden-seeded); इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; विबुधैः (vibudhaiḥ) - by the wise; तथा (tathā) - similarly; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; च (ca) - and; तदा (tadā) - then; देवी (devī) - goddess; ख्याता (khyātā) - was known; वसुमती (vasumatī) - Vasumatī (the wealthy one); इति (iti) - thus; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(By these qualities and actions in the world, the name of Agni is proclaimed. Hiranya-Retā, thus indeed by the sages and the wise, similarly. The earth also then, the goddess, was known as Vasumatī thus indeed.)
By these qualities and actions, Agni's name is proclaimed in the world as 'Hiranya-Retā,' thus indeed by sages and wise men. Similarly, at that time, the goddess Earth was known as Vasumatī. (13-84-74)
स तु गर्भो महातेजा गाङ्गेयः पावकोद्भवः। दिव्यं शरवणं प्राप्य ववृधेऽद्भुतदर्शनः ॥१३-८४-७५॥
sa tu garbho mahātejā gāṅgeyaḥ pāvakodbhavaḥ। divyaṃ śaravaṇaṃ prāpya vavṛdhe'dbhutadarśanaḥ ॥13-84-75॥

(Then he of supreme splendor attained the state of Kārtikeya; because of being dropped, he also attained the state of Skanda, and because of dwelling in a cave, he became Guha.)
