Vasiṣṭha said.
अपि चेदं पुरा राम श्रुतं मे ब्रह्मदर्शनम्। पितामहस्य यद्वृत्तं ब्रह्मणः परमात्मनः ॥१३-८५-१॥
api ca idaṁ purā rāma śrutaṁ me brahmadarśanam। pitāmahasya yad vṛttaṁ brahmaṇaḥ paramātmanaḥ॥13-85-1॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṁ) - this; पुरा (purā) - formerly; राम (rāma) - Rāma; श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard; मे (me) - by me; ब्रह्मदर्शनम् (brahmadarśanam) - vision of Brahman; पितामहस्य (pitāmahasya) - of the Grandfather; यद् (yad) - which; वृत्तं (vṛttam) - conduct; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahman; परमात्मनः (paramātmanaḥ) - of the Supreme Self;]
(Indeed and this formerly Rāma heard by me vision of Brahman; of the Grandfather which conduct of Brahman, of the Supreme Self.)
Indeed, O Rāma, formerly I heard from the Grandfather the account of Brahma, the Supreme Self, and the vision of Brahman. (13-85-1)
देवस्य महतस्तात वारुणीं बिभ्रतस्तनुम्। ऐश्वर्ये वारुणे राम रुद्रस्येशस्य वै प्रभो ॥१३-८५-२॥
devasya mahatas tāta vāruṇīṃ bibhratas tanum। aiśvarye vāruṇe rāma rudrasyeśasya vai prabho ॥13-85-2॥
[देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; तात (tāta) - O dear one; वारुणीं (vāruṇīm) - related to Varuṇa; (Varuṇa's [energy, form] or pertaining to Varuṇa); बिभ्रतस् (bibhratas) - bearing; तनुम् (tanum) - the body; ऐश्वर्ये (aiśvarye) - in the lordship; वारुणे (vāruṇe) - of Varuṇa; (in that which is of Varuṇa); राम (rāma) - O Rāma; रुद्रस्य (rudrasya) - of Rudra; ईशस्य (īśasya) - of the Lord; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रभो (prabho) - O master;]
(Of the god, great, O dear one, Varuṇa's (body) bearing the body; in the lordship, of Varuṇa, O Rāma, of Rudra, of the Lord, indeed, O master.)
O Rāma, O master, indeed the great god, bearing the form pertaining to Varuṇa, has in the majesty of Varuṇa the sovereignty of Rudra, the Lord. (13-85-2)
आजग्मुर्मुनयः सर्वे देवाश्चाग्निपुरोगमाः। यज्ञाङ्गानि च सर्वाणि वषट्कारश्च मूर्तिमान् ॥१३-८५-३॥
ājagmur munayaḥ sarve devāś cāgni-purogamāḥ। yajñāṅgāni ca sarvāṇi vaṣaṭkāraś ca mūrtimān ॥13-85-3॥
[आजग्मुः (ājagmur) - came; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; सर्वे (sarve) - all; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; अग्निपुरोगमाः (agni-purogamāḥ) - having Agni at the front; यज्ञाङ्गानि (yajñāṅgāni) - rites' limbs; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; वषट्कारः (vaṣaṭkāraḥ) - the Vaṣaṭ formula; च (ca) - and; मूर्तिमान् (mūrtimān) - having form;]
(Came sages all, gods and Agni in the lead, the ritual limbs and all, the Vaṣaṭ formula and having form.)
All the sages came, as did the gods led by Agni; all the components of the sacrifice came, and the Vaṣaṭ formula itself appeared in embodied form. (13-85-3)
मूर्तिमन्ति च सामानि यजूंषि च सहस्रशः। ऋग्वेदश्चागमत्तत्र पदक्रमविभूषितः ॥१३-८५-४॥
mūrtimanti ca sāmāni yajūm̐ṣi ca sahasraśaḥ। ṛgvedaścāgamat tatra padakramavibhūṣitaḥ ॥13-85-4॥
[मूर्तिमन्ति (mūrtimanti) - having form; च (ca) - and; सामानि (sāmāni) - the Sāma hymns; यजूंषि (yajūm̐ṣi) - the Yajus hymns; च (ca) - and; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; ऋग्वेदः (ṛgvedaḥ) - the Ṛgveda; च (ca) - and; आगमत् (āgamat) - arrived; तत्र (tatra) - there; पदक्रमविभूषितः (padakramavibhūṣitaḥ) - adorned with word-sequence;]
(having form and the Sāma hymns, and the Yajus hymns by thousands; and the Ṛgveda also arrived there, adorned with word-sequence;)
There, the Sāma hymns having form, and thousands of Yajus hymns, and also the Ṛgveda, adorned with the word-sequence, arrived. (13-85-4)
लक्षणानि स्वराः स्तोभा निरुक्तं स्वरभक्तयः। ओङ्कारश्चावसन्नेत्रे निग्रहप्रग्रहौ तथा ॥१३-८५-५॥

वेदाश्च सोपनिषदो विद्या सावित्र्यथापि च। भूतं भव्यं भविष्यच्च दधार भगवाञ्शिवः ॥ जुह्वच्चात्मन्यथात्मानं स्वयमेव तदा प्रभो ॥१३-८५-६॥
vedāś ca sopaniṣado vidyā sāvitr-y athāpi ca। bhūtaṃ bhavyaṃ bhaviṣyac ca dadhāra bhagavāñ śivaḥ॥ juhvac cātmany athātmānaṃ svayam eva tadā prabho॥13-85-6॥

(Vedas and with Upaniṣads, knowledge, with Sāvitrī, and also, and past, present and future, bore the Revered One, Śiva. Offering and in the Self and the Self, himself indeed then, O Lord.)
Śiva, the Revered One, bore the Vedas with the Upaniṣads, the knowledge, the Sāvitrī, and also the past, present, and future. He, O Lord, then indeed himself offered the Self into the Self. (13-85-6)
देवपत्न्यश्च कन्याश्च देवानां चैव मातरः। आजग्मुः सहितास्तत्र तदा भृगुकुलोद्वह ॥१३-८५-७॥
devapatnyaś ca kanyāś ca devānāṃ caiva mātaraḥ। ājagmuḥ sahitās tatra tadā bhṛgukulodvaha॥13-85-7॥
[देवपत्न्यः (devapatnyaḥ) - wives of the gods; च (ca) - and; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - daughters; च (ca) - and; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; आजग्मुः (ājagmuḥ) - (they) came; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; तत्र (tatra) - there; तदा (tadā) - then; भृगुकुलोद्वह (bhṛgukulodvaha) - O uplifter of the Bhṛgu lineage;]
(Wives of the gods and daughters, and indeed mothers of the gods, together came there then, O uplifter of the Bhṛgu lineage.)
O uplifter of the Bhṛgu lineage, at that time, the wives and daughters of the gods and also their mothers all came together to that place. (13-85-7)
यज्ञं पशुपतेः प्रीता वरुणस्य महात्मनः। स्वयम्भुवस्तु ता दृष्ट्वा रेतः समपतद्भुवि ॥१३-८५-८॥
yajñaṃ paśupateḥ prītā varuṇasya mahātmanaḥ। svayambhuvastu tā dṛṣṭvā retaḥ samapatadbhuvi ॥13-85-8॥
[यज्ञं (yajñaṃ) - sacrifice; पशुपतेः (paśupateḥ) - of Paśupati (Śiva); प्रीता (prītā) - pleased; वरुणस्य (varuṇasya) - of Varuṇa; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; स्वयम्भुवः (svayambhuvaḥ) - of Svayambhu (Brahmā); तु (tu) - but; ता (tā) - those (feminine, referring to objects or actions); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; रेतः (retaḥ) - seed; semen; समपतद् (samapatad) - descended; fell; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth;]
(Sacrifice of Paśupati, pleased of Varuṇa, the great-souled; but Svayambhu, having seen those, seed descended on the earth.)
The sacrifice of Paśupati and the pleasure of Varuṇa, the great-souled; but Svayambhu, having seen those, his seed fell upon the earth. (13-85-8)
तस्य शुक्रस्य निष्पन्दात्पांसून्सङ्गृह्य भूमितः। प्रास्यत्पूषा कराभ्यां वै तस्मिन्नेव हुताशने ॥१३-८५-९॥
tasya śukrasya niṣpandāt pāṃsūn saṅgṛhya bhūmitaḥ। prāsyat pūṣā karābhyāṃ vai tasmin eva hutāśane॥13-85-9॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of his; शुक्रस्य (śukrasya) - of Śukra; निष्पन्दात् (niṣpandāt) - from the motionless (body); पांसून् (pāṃsūn) - dust; सङ्गृह्य (saṅgṛhya) - having collected; भूमितः (bhūmitaḥ) - from the ground; प्रास्यत् (prāsyat) - threw; पूषा (pūṣā) - Pūṣan; कराभ्यां (karābhyām) - with (his) two hands; वै (vai) - indeed; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; एव (eva) - indeed; हुताशने (hutāśane) - in the fire;]
(Of his, Śukra's, from the motionless (body), dust having collected from the ground, threw Pūṣan with (his) two hands indeed in that very fire.)
Pūṣan indeed then gathered dust from the ground from the unmoving body of Śukra, and with his two hands threw it into that very fire. (13-85-9)
ततस्तस्मिन्सम्प्रवृत्ते सत्रे ज्वलितपावके। ब्रह्मणो जुह्वतस्तत्र प्रादुर्भावो बभूव ह ॥१३-८५-१०॥
tatas tasmin sampravṛtte satre jvalita-pāvake। brahmaṇo juhvatas tatra prādurbhāvo babhūva ha ॥13-85-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that (occasion); सम्प्रवृत्ते (sampravṛtte) - having commenced; सत्रे (satre) - sacrifice; ज्वलितपावके (jvalita-pāvake) - with blazing fire; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahman (the officiating priest or Brahmā); जुह्वतः (juhvataḥ) - while offering oblations; तत्र (tatra) - there; प्रादुर्भावः (prādurbhāvaḥ) - appearance; बभूव (babhūva) - happened; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then in that commenced sacrifice with blazing fire, of Brahman while offering oblations there, an appearance indeed happened.)
Then, as that sacrifice with blazing fires was commenced and while Brahman was offering oblations there, an appearance indeed occurred. (13-85-10)
स्कन्नमात्रं च तच्छुक्रं स्रुवेण प्रतिगृह्य सः। आज्यवन्मन्त्रवच्चापि सोऽजुहोद्भृगुनन्दन ॥१३-८५-११॥
skannamātraṁ ca tacchukraṁ sruveṇa pratigṛhya saḥ। ājyavanmantravaccāpi so'juhodbhṛgunandana ॥13-85-11॥
[स्कन्नमात्रं (skannamātram) - just fallen; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; शुक्रं (śukram) - seed; स्रुवेण (sruveṇa) - with the ladle; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; सः (saḥ) - he; आद्यवत् (ājyavat) - like ghee-offering; मन्त्रवत् (mantravat) - with mantras; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सः (saḥ) - he; अजुहोत् (ajuhot) - offered; भृगुनन्दन (bhṛgunandana) - O descendant of Bhṛgu;]
(Just fallen and that seed, with the ladle having accepted, he, like a ghee-offering, with mantras and also, he offered, O descendant of Bhṛgu.)
O descendant of Bhṛgu, having taken up that just-fallen seed with the ladle, he offered it as a ghee-offering, accompanied by mantras, as well.
ततः सञ्जनयामास भूतग्रामं स वीर्यवान्। ततस्तु तेजसस्तस्माज्जज्ञे लोकेषु तैजसम् ॥१३-८५-१२॥
tataḥ sañjanayāmāsa bhūtagrāmaṃ sa vīryavān. tatastu tejasastas mājjajñe lokeṣu taijasam ॥13-85-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सञ्जनयामास (sañjanayāmāsa) - he caused to arise; भूतग्रामं (bhūtagrāmam) - group of beings; स (sa) - he; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - full of power; ततस्तु (tatastu) - then indeed; तेजसः (tejasas) - from energy; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; तैजसम् (taijasam) - of fire;]
(Then he, full of power, caused the group of beings to arise. Then indeed, from that energy, was born the fiery (element) in the worlds.)
Then he, endowed with great power, brought forth the group of beings. After that, from that energy, the fiery essence was produced in the worlds. (13-85-12)
तमसस्तामसा भावा व्यापि सत्त्वं तथोभयम्। सगुणस्तेजसो नित्यं तमस्याकाशमेव च ॥१३-८५-१३॥
tamasas tāmasā bhāvā vyāpi sattvaṃ tatho'bhayam। saguṇas tejaso nityaṃ tamasy ākāśam eva ca ॥13-85-13॥
[तमसः (tamasah) - of darkness; तामसा (tāmasā) - pertaining to darkness; भावाः (bhāvāḥ) - states; व्यापि (vyāpi) - pervasive; सत्त्वम् (sattvam) - goodness; तथा (tathā) - likewise; उभयम् (ubhayam) - both; सगुणः (saguṇaḥ) - endowed with qualities; तेजसः (tejasah) - of light; नित्यम् (nityam) - eternal; तमसि (tamasi) - in darkness; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - space; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Of darkness, the states arising from darkness are pervasive; goodness likewise (or) both (are pervasive). Of light, that which is endowed with qualities is always (present); in darkness, space indeed also (exists).)
The states that arise from darkness are pervasive, as is goodness or both; that which possesses the qualities of light is always present, and in darkness, space also indeed exists. (13-85-13)
सर्वभूतेष्वथ तथा सत्त्वं तेजस्तथा तमः। शुक्रे हुतेऽग्नौ तस्मिंस्तु प्रादुरासंस्त्रयः प्रभो ॥१३-८५-१४॥
sarvabhūteṣv atha tathā sattvaṃ tejas tathā tamaḥ। śukre hute'gnau tasmiṃs tu prādur āsaṃs trayaḥ prabho ॥13-85-14॥
[सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - in all beings; अथ (atha) - then; तथा (tathā) - in that way; सत्त्वम् (sattvam) - sattva (purity, clarity); तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; तथा (tathā) - as well; तमः (tamaḥ) - darkness; शुक्रे (śukre) - in (the offering of) clarified butter; हुते (hute) - when offered; अग्नौ (agnau) - in fire; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तु (tu) - but; प्रादुरासन् (prādurāsan) - arose; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three (principles); प्रभो (prabho) - O Lord;]
(In all beings, then, likewise sattva, energy, as well as darkness; when the clarified butter was offered in fire, in that, but, arose, three (principles), O Lord.)
O Lord, in all beings, thus sattva, energy, and darkness likewise, when clarified butter was offered into the fire, in that, the three principles manifested. (13-85-14)
पुरुषा वपुषा युक्ता युक्ताः प्रसवजैर्गुणैः। भृगित्येव भृगुः पूर्वमङ्गारेभ्योऽङ्गिराभवत् ॥१३-८५-१५॥
puruṣā vapuṣā yuktā yuktāḥ prasavajair guṇaiḥ। bhṛgity eva bhṛguḥ pūrvam aṅgārebhyo 'ṅgirābhavat ॥13-85-15॥
[पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - by form; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - endowed; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - possessed; प्रसवजैः (prasavajaiḥ) - by those produced (born); गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - with qualities; भृगित्येव (bhṛgity eva) - just as 'Bhṛgī'; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; अङ्गारेभ्यः (aṅgārebhyaḥ) - from the coals; अङ्गिरा (aṅgirā) - Aṅgirā; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(men by form endowed, endowed by those born with qualities; just as 'Bhṛgī', Bhṛgu formerly from the coals Aṅgirā became.)
Men, endowed by form and by the qualities acquired at birth, just as Bhṛgu — who earlier became Aṅgirā from the coals — were thus endowed. (13-85-15)
अङ्गारसंश्रयाच्चैव कविरित्यपरोऽभवत्। सह ज्वालाभिरुत्पन्नो भृगुस्तस्माद्भृगुः स्मृतः ॥१३-८५-१६॥
aṅgārasaṁśrayāccaiva kavirityaparo'bhavat। saha jvālābhirutpanno bhṛgustasmādbhṛguḥ smṛtaḥ ॥13-85-16॥
[अङ्गार-संश्रयात् (aṅgāra-saṁśrayāt) - from resorting to (taking refuge in) embers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कविः (kaviḥ) - Kavi (sage Kavi); इति (iti) - thus; अपरोऽभवत् (aparaḥ abhavat) - another became; सह (saha) - with; ज्वालाभिः (jvālābhiḥ) - with flames; उत्पन्नः (utpannaḥ) - was born; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu (sage Bhṛgu); तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; भृगुः स्मृतः (bhṛguḥ smṛtaḥ) - he is remembered as Bhṛgu;]
(From resorting to embers indeed, another became (known as) Kavi; with flames was born Bhṛgu; from that, he is remembered as Bhṛgu.)
Another (person), through resorting to embers, became known as Kavi; Bhṛgu was born together with the flames, therefore he is remembered as Bhṛgu. (13-85-16)
मरीचिभ्यो मरीचिस्तु मारीचः कश्यपो ह्यभूत्। अङ्गारेभ्योऽङ्गिरास्तात वालखिल्याः शिलोच्चयात् ॥ अत्रैवात्रेति च विभो जातमत्रिं वदन्त्यपि ॥१३-८५-१७॥
marīcibhyo marīcistu mārīcaḥ kaśyapo hyabhūt। aṅgārebhyo'ṅgirāstāta vālakhilyāḥ śilocchayāt॥ atraivātreti ca vibho jātamatriṃ vadantyapi॥13-85-17॥
[मरीचिभ्यः (marīcibhyaḥ) - from the Marīcis; मरीचिः (marīciḥ) - Marīci; तु (tu) - but; मारीचः (mārīcaḥ) - descended from (or of) Marīci; कश्यपः (kaśyapaḥ) - Kaśyapa; हि (hi) - indeed; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; अङ्गारेभ्यः (aṅgārebhyaḥ) - from the Aṅgāras; अङ्गिराः (aṅgirāḥ) - Aṅgirās; तात (tāta) - O dear one; वालखिल्याः (vālakhilyāḥ) - Vālakilyas; शिलोच्चयात् (śilocchayāt) - from the heap of rocks; अत्र (atra) - here; एव (eva) - indeed; अत्रेति (atreti) - as Atri; च (ca) - and; विभो (vibho) - O lord; जातम् (jātam) - born; अत्रिम् (atrim) - Atri; वदन्ति (vadanti) - they say; अपि (api) - also;]
(From the Marīcis, Marīci but (from him) the one descended from Marīci, Kaśyapa indeed was; From the Aṅgāras, O dear one, Aṅgirās (arose); the Vālakilyas from the heap of rocks. Here, indeed, O lord, some also say Atri was born as Atri.)
From Marīci came Kaśyapa, who was indeed descended from (or of) Marīci; O dear one, from the Aṅgāras came Aṅgirās, and from a heap of rocks, the Vālakilyas. Here, O lord, some also say that Atri was born as Atri. (13-85-17)
तथा भस्मव्यपोहेभ्यो ब्रह्मर्षिगणसंमिताः। वैखानसाः समुत्पन्नास्तपःश्रुतगुणेप्सवः ॥ अश्रुतोऽस्य समुत्पन्नावश्विनौ रूपसंमतौ ॥१३-८५-१८॥
tathā bhasmavyapohebhyo brahmarṣigaṇasaṃmitāḥ। vaikhānasāḥ samutpannāstapaḥśrutaguṇepsavaḥ ॥ aśruto'sya samutpannāvaśvinau rūpasaṃmatau ॥13-85-18॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; भस्मव्यपोहेभ्यः (bhasmavyapoh-ebhyaḥ) - from those versed in the removal of ashes; ब्रह्मर्षिगणसंमिताः (brahmarṣigaṇa-saṃmitāḥ) - equal to assemblies of brahmaṛṣis; वैखानसाः (vaikhānasāḥ) - the Vaikhānasa sages; समुत्पन्नाः (samutpannāḥ) - arose; तपःश्रुतगुणेप्सवः (tapaḥ-śruta-guṇa-īpsavaḥ) - desiring virtues of austerity and hearing (of Veda); अश्रुतः (aśrutaḥ) - one unlearned in scripture; अस्य (asya) - of him; समुत्पन्नौ (samutpannau) - arose (dual); अश्विनौ (aśvinau) - the two Aśvin gods; रूपसंमतौ (rūpa-saṃmatau) - renowned for beauty;]
(Thus, from those versed in the removal of ashes, equal to assemblies of brahmaṛṣis, Vaikhānasa sages arose, desiring virtues of austerity and hearing. To one unlearned in scripture, of him, arose the two Aśvins, renowned for beauty. (13-85-18))
Thus, from those skilled in the removal of ashes, who were equal to groups of brahmaṛṣis, the Vaikhānasa sages arose, desirous of the virtues of austerity and knowledge of the Vedas. For one unlearned in scripture, the divine Aśvins, renowned for their beauty, arose from him. (13-85-18)
शेषाः प्रजानां पतयः स्रोतोभ्यस्तस्य जज्ञिरे। ऋषयो लोमकूपेभ्यः स्वेदाच्छन्दो मलात्मकम् ॥१३-८५-१९॥

(The rest, of beings, the lords, from the channels of him, were born. The seers, from the pores of hair, from sweat, the meter consisting of impurity.)
The remaining lords of beings were born from his channels. Sages arose from his hair pores, and from his sweat came the meter (chandas) with the nature of impurity. (13-85-19)
एतस्मात्कारणादाहुरग्निं सर्वास्तु देवताः। ऋषयः श्रुतसम्पन्ना वेदप्रामाण्यदर्शनात् ॥१३-८५-२०॥
etasmāt kāraṇād āhur agniṃ sarvāḥ tu devatāḥ | ṛṣayaḥ śruta-sampannā veda-prāmāṇya-darśanāt ॥13-85-20॥
[एतस्मात् (etasmāt) - from this; कारणात् (kāraṇāt) - because; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; अग्निम् (agniṃ) - Agni; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; तु (tu) - indeed; देवताः (devatāḥ) - deities; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; श्रुतसम्पन्नाः (śruta-sampannāḥ) - endowed with scriptural knowledge; वेदप्रामाण्यदर्शनात् (veda-prāmāṇya-darśanāt) - because of the view of the authority of the Veda;]
(From this reason, they say Agni is (all) the deities indeed; the sages endowed with scriptural knowledge, because of the view of Vedic authority.)
For this reason, the sages possessing scriptural knowledge, due to their recognition of the authority of the Veda, declare Agni to be indeed all the deities. (13-85-20)
यानि दारूणि ते मासा निर्यासाः पक्षसञ्ज्ञिताः। अहोरात्रा मुहूर्तास्तु पित्तं ज्योतिश्च वारुणम् ॥१३-८५-२१॥

(Which in the woods, those months, exudations, called pakṣa; day and night, mūhūrtas but bile, light and watery.)
Those exudations found in the woods called 'pakṣa' represent the months; days and nights, as well as mūhūrtas, correspond to bile, light, and the watery (element). (13-85-21)
रौद्रं लोहितमित्याहुर्लोहितात्कनकं स्मृतम्। तन्मैत्रमिति विज्ञेयं धूमाच्च वसवः स्मृताः ॥१३-८५-२२॥
raudraṁ lohitam ity āhur lohitāt kanakaṁ smṛtam। tanmaitram iti vijñeyaṁ dhūmāc ca vasavaḥ smṛtāḥ॥13-85-22॥

((The) raudra is red, thus they say; from the red, gold is known. That (is) maitra, thus should be understood. From smoke also, the Vasus are known. (13-85-22))

(Flames which and your Rudras, likewise Ādityas of great brilliance; addressed are they likewise embers which in the abodes in heaven situated.)
The flames which are your Rudras, and similarly the Ādityas of great brilliance; those who have been mentioned are likewise the embers situated in the heavenly abodes. (13-85-23)
आदिनाथश्च लोकस्य तत्परं ब्रह्म तद्ध्रुवम्। सर्वकामदमित्याहुस्तत्र हव्यमुदावहत् ॥१३-८५-२४॥
ādināthaś ca lokasya tat paraṃ brahma tad dhruvam। sarvakāmadam ity āhus tatra havyam udāvahat॥13-85-24॥

(Ādinātha and of the world, that supreme Brahman, that unchanging. Giver of all desires thus they say, there offering he offered up.)
The prime lord and ruler of the world is said to be that supreme, unchanging Brahman—the giver of all desires; there he offered up the offering. (13-85-24)
ततोऽब्रवीन्महादेवो वरुणः परमात्मकः। मम सत्रमिदं दिव्यमहं गृहपतिस्त्विह ॥१३-८५-२५॥
tato'bravīn mahādevo varuṇaḥ paramātmakaḥ। mama satram idaṃ divyam ahaṃ gṛhapatis tu iha ॥13-85-25॥

(Three former offspring my, those not doubt. Thus know, O birds, my sacrifice-result indeed that.)

अथाब्रवील्लोकगुरुर्ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः। ममैव तान्यपत्यानि मम शुक्रं हुतं हि तत् ॥१३-८५-२८॥

(Then the groups of gods, having approached the Grandfather indeed, having made their hands joined, all having bowed with (their) heads, they spoke.)
Then all the groups of gods, having made reverent gesture with joined hands and bowing with their heads, approached the Grandfather (Brahmā) and spoke. (13-85-30)
वयं च भगवन्सर्वे जगच्च सचराचरम्। तवैव प्रसवाः सर्वे तस्मादग्निर्विभावसुः ॥ वरुणश्चेश्वरो देवो लभतां काममीप्सितम् ॥१३-८५-३१॥
vayaṃ ca bhagavansarve jagacca sacarācaram। tavaiva prasavāḥ sarve tasmādagnirvibhāvasuḥ ॥ varuṇaśceśvaro devo labhatāṃ kāmamīpsitam ॥13-85-31॥

(We and all, O Lord, and also the world with the moving and unmoving, all are indeed your offspring; therefore, Agni, the radiant one, and Varuṇa, the Lord god, may obtain the wished-for desire.)
O Lord, we along with all beings and the entire world, both moving and unmoving, are indeed your offspring; therefore, may Agni, the radiant one, and Varuṇa, the Lord god, obtain their desired wish. (13-85-31)
निसर्गाद्वरुणश्चापि ब्रह्मणो यादसां पतिः। जग्राह वै भृगुं पूर्वमपत्यं सूर्यवर्चसम् ॥१३-८५-३२॥
nisargād varuṇaś cāpi brahmaṇo yād asāṃ patiḥ। jagrāha vai bhṛguṃ pūrvam apatyaṃ sūryavarcasam ॥13-85-32॥
[निसर्गात् (nisargāt) - by nature; from natural disposition; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa; (the deity); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; यादसाम् (yādasām) - of the aquatic beings; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord; master; जग्राह (jagrāha) - accepted; seized; वै (vai) - indeed; भृगुम् (bhṛguṃ) - Bhṛgu; (proper noun); पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; in the beginning; अपत्यं (apatyaṃ) - offspring; सूर्यवर्चसम् (sūryavarcasam) - having the splendor of the sun;]
(By nature, Varuṇa also, the lord of the aquatic beings, of Brahmā; indeed accepted Bhṛgu, formerly, the offspring, having the splendor of the sun.)

[ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - the Lord; अङ्गिरसं (aṅgirasaṃ) - Aṅgiras (the sage); च (ca) - and; अग्नेः (agneḥ) - of Agni; अपत्यार्थे (apatyārthe) - for the sake of offspring; अभ्यकल्पयत् (abhyakalpayat) - appointed; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the Grandfather; तु (tu) - but; अपत्यं (apatyaṃ) - the offspring; वै (vai) - indeed; कविं (kaviṃ) - Kavi (the sage); जग्राह (jagrāha) - accepted; तत्त्ववित् (tattvavit) - the knower of truth;]
(The Lord appointed Aṅgiras for the sake of offspring of Agni. But the Grandfather indeed accepted the offspring Kavi, the knower of truth. (13-85-33))
The Lord designated Aṅgiras as the son of Agni, but the Grandfather actually accepted as offspring Kavi, the sage who knows the truth. (13-85-33)
तदा स वारुणः ख्यातो भृगुः प्रसवकर्मकृत्। आग्नेयस्त्वङ्गिराः श्रीमान्कविर्ब्राह्मो महायशाः ॥ भार्गवाङ्गिरसौ लोके लोकसन्तानलक्षणौ ॥१३-८५-३४॥
tadā sa vāruṇaḥ khyāto bhṛguḥ prasavakarmakṛt। āgneya-stvaṅgirāḥ śrīmān kavir brāhmo mahāyaśāḥ॥ bhārgavāṅgirasau loke loka-santāna-lakṣaṇau॥13-85-34॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; स (sa) - he; वारुणः (vāruṇaḥ) - of Varuṇa; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - celebrated; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu; प्रसवकर्मकृत् (prasavakarmakṛt) - doer of procreative act; आग्नेयः (āgneyaḥ) - of Agni; त्वङ्गिराः (tvaṅgirāḥ) - indeed Aṅgirāḥ; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; कविः (kaviḥ) - wise sage; ब्राह्मः (brāhmaḥ) - of Brahmā; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - of great fame; भार्गवाङ्गिरसौ (bhārgavāṅgirasau) - Bhārgava and Aṅgirasa (Bhṛgu and Aṅgirāḥ); लोके (loke) - in the world; लोकसन्तानलक्षणौ (loka-santāna-lakṣaṇau) - signs of the propagation of humanity;]
(Then he, the celebrated Varuṇa-born Bhṛgu, doer of procreative acts. Of Agni, indeed Aṅgirāḥ, prosperous, wise sage, of Brahmā, greatly famed. Bhārgava and Aṅgirasa in the world are marks of the propagation of humanity. (13-85-34))
Then Bhṛgu, the renowned son of Varuṇa, became the procreator. Aṅgirāḥ, the illustrious and wise sage, was the son of Agni and greatly praised as a son of Brahmā. Bhṛgu and Aṅgirāḥ, in the world, are considered the founders of the human lineage. (13-85-34)
एते विप्रवराः सर्वे प्रजानां पतयस्त्रयः। सर्वं सन्तानमेतेषामिदमित्युपधारय ॥१३-८५-३५॥
ete vipravarāḥ sarve prajānāṃ patayas trayaḥ। sarvaṃ santānam eteṣām idam ity-upadhāraya ॥13-85-35॥

भृगोस्तु पुत्रास्तत्रासन्सप्त तुल्या भृगोर्गुणैः। च्यवनो वज्रशीर्षश्च शुचिरौर्वस्तथैव च ॥१३-८५-३६॥
bhṛgos tu putrās tatrāsan sapta tulyā bhṛgor guṇaiḥ। cyavano vajraśīrṣaś ca śucir aurvas tathaiva ca ॥13-85-36॥

एवमङ्गिरसश्चैव कवेश्च प्रसवान्वयैः। भृगोश्च भृगुशार्दूल वंशजैः सततं जगत् ॥१३-८५-४३॥

Thus, O tiger among the Bhṛgus, the world is perpetually populated by the descendants and lineages of Aṅgiras, Kavi, and Bhṛgu. (13-85-43)
वरुणश्चादितो विप्र जग्राह प्रभुरीश्वरः। कविं तात भृगुं चैव तस्मात्तौ वारुणौ स्मृतौ ॥१३-८५-४४॥

सर्वे प्रजानां पतयः सर्वे चातितपस्विनः। त्वत्प्रसादादिमं लोकं तारयिष्यन्ति शाश्वतम् ॥१३-८५-४७॥

तथैव वंशकर्तारस्तव तेजोविवर्धनाः। भवेयुर्वेदविदुषः सर्वे वाक्पतयस्तथा ॥१३-८५-४८॥
tathaiva vaṃśakartāras tava tejo-vivardhanāḥ। bhaveyur vedaviduṣaḥ sarve vākpatayas tathā॥13-85-48॥

(In the same way, your progenitors, increasing the splendor, may they all become knowers of the Veda, likewise masters of speech.)

देवपक्षधराः सौम्याः प्राजापत्या महर्षयः। आप्नुवन्ति तपश्चैव ब्रह्मचर्यं परं तथा ॥१३-८५-४९॥
devapakṣadharāḥ saumyāḥ prājāpatyā maharṣayaḥ। āpnuvanti tapaścaiva brahmacaryaṃ paraṃ tathā॥13-85-49॥
[देवपक्षधराः (devapakṣadharāḥ) - those who support (hold) the side of the gods; सौम्याः (saumyāḥ) - gentle ones; प्राजापत्या (prājāpatyā) - descendants of Prajāpati; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; आप्नुवन्ति (āpnuvanti) - they attain; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ब्रह्मचर्यं (brahmacaryaṃ) - brahmacharya (celibacy, discipline); परं (paraṃ) - supreme; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Those who support the side of the gods, gentle ones, descendants of Prajāpati, great sages, attain austerity and indeed likewise supreme brahmacharya.)
The gentle great sages, who are descendants of Prajāpati and supporters of the gods, attain austerity and also the highest brahmacharya (spiritual discipline). (13-85-49)
सर्वे हि वयमेते च तवैव प्रसवः प्रभो। देवानां ब्राह्मणानां च त्वं हि कर्ता पितामह ॥१३-८५-५०॥
sarve hi vayam ete ca tavaiva prasavaḥ prabho। devānāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ ca tvaṃ hi kartā pitāmaha ॥13-85-50॥

(All indeed we these and are of you indeed the origin, O Lord. Of the gods and of the brāhmaṇas also, you indeed are the creator, O grandsire.)
O grandsire, all of us here are indeed born of you, O Lord. You are the creator of the gods and also of the brāhmaṇas. (13-85-50)
मरीचिमादितः कृत्वा सर्वे चैवाथ भार्गवाः। अपत्यानीति सम्प्रेक्ष्य क्षमयाम पितामह ॥१३-८५-५१॥
marīcimāditaḥ kṛtvā sarve caivātha bhārgavāḥ। apatyānīti samprekṣya kṣamayāma pitāmaha ॥13-85-51॥

ते त्वनेनैव रूपेण प्रजनिष्यन्ति वै प्रजाः। स्थापयिष्यन्ति चात्मानं युगादिनिधने तथा ॥१३-८५-५२॥
te tvanenaiva rūpeṇa prajaniṣyanti vai prajāḥ। sthāpayiṣyanti cātmānaṃ yugādini-dhane tathā ॥13-85-52॥

(They but by this very form will be born indeed, the beings; and will establish themselves at the end of the age likewise.)
But those beings will be born in this very form, and they will also establish themselves similarly at the end of the age. (13-85-52)
एवमेतत्पुरा वृत्तं तस्य यज्ञे महात्मनः। देवश्रेष्ठस्य लोकादौ वारुणीं बिभ्रतस्तनुम् ॥१३-८५-५३॥
evam etat purā vṛttaṃ tasya yajñe mahātmanaḥ। devaśreṣṭhasya lokādau vāruṇīṃ bibhratas tanum ॥13-85-53॥

अग्निर्ब्रह्मा पशुपतिः शर्वो रुद्रः प्रजापतिः। अग्नेरपत्यमेतद्वै सुवर्णमिति धारणा ॥१३-८५-५४॥

अग्न्यभावे च कुर्वन्ति वह्निस्थानेषु काञ्चनम्। जामदग्न्य प्रमाणज्ञा वेदश्रुतिनिदर्शनात् ॥१३-८५-५५॥
agny-abhāve ca kurvanti vahni-sthāneṣu kāñcanam। jāmadagnya pramāṇa-jñā veda-śruti-nidarśanāt ॥13-85-55॥

In the absence of fire, those who know the authoritative standard (such as Jāmadagnya), using what is taught in the Vedic śruti, use gold in place of fire. (13-85-55)
कुशस्तम्बे जुहोत्यग्निं सुवर्णं तत्र संस्थितम्। हुते प्रीतिकरीमृद्धिं भगवांस्तत्र मन्यते ॥१३-८५-५६॥
kuśastambe juhotyagniṃ suvarṇaṃ tatra saṃsthitam। hute prītikarīmṛddhiṃ bhagavāṃstatra manyate॥13-85-56॥
[कुशस्तम्बे (kuśastambe) - on the kuśa stalks; जुहोति (juhoti) - offers (as oblation); अग्निं (agniṃ) - fire; सुवर्णं (suvarṇam) - gold; तत्र (tatra) - there; संस्थितम् (saṃsthitam) - placed; हुते (hute) - when (it is) offered; प्रीतिकरीम् (prītikarīm) - causing delight; ऋद्धिं (ṛddhim) - prosperity; भगवाञ् (bhagavān) - the Lord; तत्र (tatra) - there; मन्यते (manyate) - considers;]
(On the kuśa stalks, he offers fire and gold placed there; when it is offered, the Lord considers prosperity (that is) causing delight there.)
When one offers fire and gold placed upon the kuśa stalks, the Lord regards it as prosperity that brings delight. (13-85-56)
तस्मादग्निपराः सर्वा देवता इति शुश्रुम। ब्रह्मणो हि प्रसूतोऽग्निरग्नेरपि च काञ्चनम् ॥१३-८५-५७॥
tasmād agniparāḥ sarvā devatā iti śuśruma। brahmaṇo hi prasūto'gnir agner api ca kāñcanam॥13-85-57॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अग्निपराः (agniparāḥ) - having fire as foremost; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; देवताः (devatāḥ) - divinities; इति (iti) - thus; शुश्रुम (śuśruma) - we have heard; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - from Brahman; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रसूतः (prasūtaḥ) - produced; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni; अग्नेः (agner) - from Agni; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; काञ्चनम् (kāñcanam) - gold;]
(Therefore having fire as foremost, all divinities – thus we have heard. From Brahman indeed produced Agni; from Agni even also gold.)
Therefore, all the gods are foremost in fire – thus we have heard. For Agni was indeed produced from Brahman, and from Agni also came gold. (13-85-57)
तस्माद्ये वै प्रयच्छन्ति सुवर्णं धर्मदर्शिनः। देवतास्ते प्रयच्छन्ति समस्ता इति नः श्रुतम् ॥१३-८५-५८॥
tasmād ye vai prayacchanti suvarṇaṃ dharmadarśinaḥ। devatās te prayacchanti samastā iti naḥ śrutam ॥13-85-58॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ये (ye) - those who; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - give; सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; धर्मदर्शिनः (dharmadarśinaḥ) - who see righteousness; देवताः (devatāḥ) - deities; ते (te) - they; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - give; समस्ताः (samastāḥ) - all; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - to us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard;]
(Therefore, those who indeed give gold to the observers of righteousness, all the deities, they give thus—to us it is heard.)
Therefore, it is heard by us that whoever gives gold to those who see righteousness, all the deities indeed bestow (the fruit of that gift).
तस्य चातमसो लोका गच्छतः परमां गतिम्। स्वर्लोके राजराज्येन सोऽभिषिच्येत भार्गव ॥१३-८५-५९॥
tasya cātamaso lokā gacchataḥ paramāṃ gatim। svarloke rājarājyena so'bhiṣicyeta bhārgava ॥13-85-59॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; च (ca) - and; अ-तमसः (a-tamasaḥ) - without darkness; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; गच्छतः (gacchataḥ) - (he) goes; परमां (paramām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state; स्वर्लोके (svarloke) - in heaven; राजराज्येन (rājarājyena) - with sovereignty of kings; सः (saḥ) - he; अभिषिच्येत (abhiṣicyeta) - would be anointed; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O descendant of Bhṛgu;]
(Of him and worlds without darkness (he) goes supreme state. In heaven with sovereignty of kings he would be anointed, O Bhārgava.)
He, O Bhārgava, attains worlds without darkness and the supreme state; in heaven he would be anointed with the sovereignty of kings. (13-85-59)
आदित्योदयने प्राप्ते विधिमन्त्रपुरस्कृतम्। ददाति काञ्चनं यो वै दुःस्वप्नं प्रतिहन्ति सः ॥१३-८५-६०॥
ādityodayane prāpte vidhimantrapuraskṛtam। dadāti kāñcanaṃ yo vai duḥsvapnaṃ pratihanti saḥ ॥13-85-60॥
[आदित्योदयने (ādityodayane) - at the rising of the sun; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - when attained; विधिमन्त्रपुरस्कृतम् (vidhimantrapuraskṛtam) - preceded by (according to) proper rite and mantra; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; काञ्चनम् (kāñcanam) - gold; यः (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; दुःस्वप्नम् (duḥsvapnam) - bad dream; प्रतिहन्ति (pratihanti) - removes; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(At the rising of the sun, when attained, who indeed gives gold preceded by proper rite and mantra, he removes bad dream.)
He who, at sunrise, gives gold in accordance with the prescribed ritual and mantra, indeed removes a bad dream. (13-85-60)
ददात्युदितमात्रे यस्तस्य पाप्मा विधूयते। मध्याह्ने ददतो रुक्मं हन्ति पापमनागतम् ॥१३-८५-६१॥
dadātyuditamātre yastyasya pāpmā vidhūyate. madhyāhne dadato rukmaṃ hanti pāpamanāgatam ॥13-85-61॥
[ददाति (dadāti) - gives; उदितमात्रे (uditamātre) - at the very moment of sunrise; यः (yaḥ) - who; तस्य (tasya) - of him; पाप्मा (pāpmā) - sin; विधूयते (vidhūyate) - is shaken off; मध्याह्ने (madhyāhne) - at midday; ददतः (dadataḥ) - of one who gives; रुक्मं (rukmaṃ) - gold; हन्ति (hanti) - destroys; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; अनागतम् (anāgatam) - not yet arrived;]
(Who gives at the very moment of sunrise—for him the sin is shaken off. At midday, the giving of gold destroys sin not yet arrived. (13-85-61))
He who gives at the moment of sunrise, his sin is removed. Giving gold at midday destroys even the sin that has not yet arrived. (13-85-61)
ददाति पश्चिमां सन्ध्यां यः सुवर्णं धृतव्रतः। ब्रह्मवाय्वग्निसोमानां सालोक्यमुपयाति सः ॥१३-८५-६२॥
dadāti paścimāṁ sandhyāṁ yaḥ suvarṇaṁ dhṛtavrataḥ। brahmavāyvagnisomānāṁ sālokyamupayāti saḥ॥13-85-62॥
[ददाति (dadāti) - gives; पश्चिमां (paścimām) - evening; सन्ध्यां (sandhyām) - twilight; यः (yaḥ) - who; सुवर्णं (suvarṇam) - gold; धृतव्रतः (dhṛtavrataḥ) - one of firm vow; ब्रह्मवाय्वग्निसोमानां (brahmavāyvagnisomānām) - of Brahman, Vāyu, Agni, and Soma; सालोक्यम् (sālokyam) - dwelling in the same world; उपयाति (upayāti) - attains; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(He who, having a firm vow, gives gold at the evening twilight, attains dwelling in the same world as Brahman, Vāyu, Agni, and Soma.)
Whoever, with steadfast vow, gives gold at evening twilight attains to the same realm as Brahman, Vāyu, Agni, and Soma. (13-85-62)
सेन्द्रेषु चैव लोकेषु प्रतिष्ठां प्राप्नुते शुभाम्। इह लोके यशः प्राप्य शान्तपाप्मा प्रमोदते ॥१३-८५-६३॥
sendreṣu caiva lokeṣu pratiṣṭhāṃ prāpnute śubhām। iha loke yaśaḥ prāpya śāntapāpmā pramodate ॥13-85-63॥
[सेन्द्रेषु (sendreṣu) - with the Indras (gods); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in worlds; प्रतिष्ठां (pratiṣṭhām) - abiding; प्राप्नुते (prāpnute) - attains; शुभाम् (śubhām) - auspicious; इह (iha) - here; लोके (loke) - in the world; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; शान्तपाप्मा (śāntapāpmā) - whose sin is calmed; प्रमोदते (pramodate) - rejoices;]
(With the Indras (gods) and indeed in worlds, he attains auspicious abiding. Here in the world, having attained fame, whose sin is calmed rejoices.)
He attains auspicious status among the Indras and in the worlds; here, having gained fame in this world, he rejoices with his sins quelled. (13-85-63)
ततः सम्पद्यतेऽन्येषु लोकेष्वप्रतिमः सदा। अनावृतगतिश्चैव कामचारी भवत्युत ॥१३-८५-६४॥
tataḥ sampadyate'nyeṣu lokeṣvapratimaḥ sadā| anāvṛtagatiścaiva kāmacārī bhavatyuta ॥13-85-64॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then;, सम्पद्यते (sampadyate) - attains;, अन्येषु (anyeṣu) - among others;, लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in worlds;, अप्रतिमः (apratimaḥ) - incomparable;, सदा (sadā) - always;, अनावृतगतिः (anāvṛtagatiḥ) - having unimpeded movement;, च (ca) - and;, एव (eva) - indeed;, कामचारी (kāmacārī) - moving at will;, भवति (bhavati) - becomes;, उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Then, he attains among others in the worlds the incomparable one always. Having unimpeded movement indeed, moving at will, he indeed becomes.)
Then, he always attains the state of being incomparable among other worlds. He indeed becomes one with unimpeded movement, moving as he wishes. (13-85-64)
न च क्षरति तेभ्यः स शश्वच्चैवाप्नुते महत्। सुवर्णमक्षयं दत्त्वा लोकानाप्नोति पुष्कलान् ॥१३-८५-६५॥
na ca kṣarati tebhyaḥ sa śaśvac caivāpnute mahat। suvarṇam akṣayaṃ dattvā lokān āpnoti puṣkalān ॥13-85-65॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; क्षरति (kṣarati) - perishes; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from them; स (sa) - he; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - always; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; आप्नुते (āpnute) - obtains; महत् (mahat) - great; सुवर्णम् (suvarṇam) - gold; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; आप्नुति (āpnoti) - attains; पुष्कलान् (puṣkalān) - abundant;]
(Not and perishes from them; he always and indeed obtains great; gold imperishable having given, worlds attains abundant.)
And it does not perish from them; he indeed always attains greatness; having given imperishable gold, he attains abundant worlds. (13-85-65)
यस्तु सञ्जनयित्वाग्निमादित्योदयनं प्रति। दद्याद्वै व्रतमुद्दिश्य सर्वान्कामान्समश्नुते ॥१३-८५-६६॥
yastu sañjanayitvāgnim ādityodayanaṃ prati। dadyād vai vratam uddiśya sarvān kāmān samaśnute ॥13-85-66॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; सञ्जनयित्वा (sañjanayitvā) - having kindled (having produced); अग्निम् (agnim) - fire; आदित्य (āditya) - the sun; उदयनं (udayanam) - rising; प्रति (prati) - towards; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; वै (vai) - indeed; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow (offering); उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - with reference to (with intent); सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; समश्नुते (samaśnute) - he attains;]
(But who, having kindled fire towards the rising of the sun, should indeed give offering with intent, he attains all desires.)
But whoever, having kindled the fire at sunrise, makes an offering with intent, indeed attains all desires. (13-85-66)
अग्निरित्येव तत्प्राहुः प्रदानं वै सुखावहम्। यथेष्टगुणसम्पन्नं प्रवर्तकमिति स्मृतम् ॥१३-८५-६७॥
agnirityeva tatprāhuḥ pradānaṃ vai sukhāvaham। yatheṣṭaguṇasampannaṃ pravartakamitismṛtam ॥13-85-67॥
[अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they say; प्रदानम् (pradānam) - gift; वै (vai) - truly; सुखावहम् (sukhāvaham) - bearing happiness; यथेष्टगुणसम्पन्नम् (yatheṣṭaguṇasampannam) - endowed with desired qualities; प्रवर्तकम् (pravartakam) - cause of activity; इति (iti) - thus; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is remembered;]
(Fire thus indeed that they say; gift truly bearing happiness; endowed with desired qualities, cause of activity, thus is remembered.)
They speak of fire in this way; the act of giving is truly a source of happiness, and that which is endowed with the desired qualities and prompts action is so regarded. (13-85-67)
भीष्म उवाच॥

इत्युक्तः स वसिष्ठेन जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान्। ददौ सुवर्णं विप्रेभ्यो व्यमुच्यत च किल्बिषात् ॥१३-८५-६८॥
ity uktaḥ sa vasiṣṭhena jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān । dadau suvarṇaṃ viprebhyo vyamucyata ca kilbiṣāt ॥13-85-68॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; स (sa) - he; वसिष्ठेन (vasiṣṭhena) - by Vasiṣṭha; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - descendant of Jamadagni; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - mighty; ददौ (dadau) - gave; सुवर्णं (suvarṇam) - gold; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; व्यमुच्यत (vyamucyata) - was released; च (ca) - and; किल्बिषात् (kilbiṣāt) - from sin;]
(Thus addressed, he, the mighty descendant of Jamadagni, by Vasiṣṭha, gave gold to the Brāhmaṇas and was released from sin.)
Thus, when addressed by Vasiṣṭha, the mighty Jamadagni’s son gave gold to the Brāhmaṇas and was freed from sin. (13-85-68)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं सुवर्णस्य महीपते। प्रदानस्य फलं चैव जन्म चाग्न्यमनुत्तमम् ॥१३-८५-६९॥
etat te sarvam ākhyātam suvarṇasya mahīpate। pradānasya phalaṃ caiva janma ca agnim anuttamam॥13-85-69॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; सुवर्णस्य (suvarṇasya) - of gold; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king; प्रदानस्य (pradānasya) - of giving; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; जन्म (janma) - origin; च (ca) - and; अग्नि (agni) - fire; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - the supreme;]
(This to you all has been told, O king, of gold; of giving fruit indeed, and the origin and fire, the supreme.)
O king, all this has been told to you regarding gold: the fruit of giving it, its origin, and the supreme nature of fire. (13-85-69)
तस्मात्त्वमपि विप्रेभ्यः प्रयच्छ कनकं बहु। ददत्सुवर्णं नृपते किल्बिषाद्विप्रमोक्ष्यसि ॥१३-८५-७०॥
tasmāttvamapi viprebhyaḥ prayaccha kanakaṃ bahu। dadatsuvarṇaṃ nṛpate kilbiṣādvipramokṣyasi ॥13-85-70॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; कनकं (kanakaṃ) - gold; बहु (bahu) - much; ददत् (dadat) - giving; सुवर्णं (suvarṇaṃ) - gold; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; किल्बिषात् (kilbiṣāt) - from sin; विप्रमोक्ष्यसि (vipramokṣyasi) - you will be released;]
(Therefore you also to Brāhmaṇas give much gold. Giving gold, O king, from sin you will be released.)
Therefore, you too should give much gold to the Brāhmaṇas. By giving gold, O king, you will be released from sin. (13-85-70)
