विपन्नकृत्या राजेन्द्र देवता ऋषयस्तथा। कृत्तिकाश्चोदयामासुरपत्यभरणाय वै ॥१३-८६-५॥
vipannakṛtyā rājeindra devatā ṛṣayas tathā। kṛttikāś codayāmāsur apatyabharaṇāya vai ॥13-86-5॥
[विपन्नकृत्या (vipanna-kṛtyā) - with lost purpose; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; देवता (devatāḥ) - the deities; ऋषयस्तथा (ṛṣayaḥ tathā) - and the sages; कृत्तिकाः (kṛttikāḥ) - the Kṛttikā stars (Pleiades); च (ca) - and; उदयामासुः (udayāmāsuḥ) - caused to arise; अपत्यभरणाय (apatya-bharaṇāya) - for the nourishment of the offspring; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(With lost purpose, O king, the deities and the sages and also the Kṛttikā stars caused (someone) to arise indeed for the nourishment of the offspring.)
O king, when their purpose had failed, the deities, sages, and the Kṛttikā stars caused (the child) to arise for the nourishment of their offspring indeed. (13-86-5)
न देवतानां काचिद्धि समर्था जातवेदसः। एकापि शक्ता तं गर्भं सन्धारयितुमोजसा ॥१३-८६-६॥
na devatānāṃ kācid dhi samarthā jātavedasaḥ। ekāpi śaktā taṃ garbhaṃ sandhārayitum ojasā ॥13-86-6॥

(Not of the gods any indeed is capable of Jātavedas; even one is able that embryo to sustain by strength.)
Indeed, none among the gods is capable of supporting the offspring of Jātavedas; even a single one cannot sustain that embryo by strength. (13-86-6)
षण्णां तासां ततः प्रीतः पावको गर्भधारणात्। स्वेन तेजोविसर्गेण वीर्येण परमेण च ॥१३-८६-७॥
ṣaṇṇāṃ tāsāṃ tataḥ prītaḥ pāvako garbhadhāraṇāt. svena tejovisargeṇa vīryeṇa parameṇa ca ॥13-86-7॥

(Of the six, of those, then satisfied, Agni, from conception; by his own, by the emission of energy, by (his) supreme vigor also.)
Then, of those six, Agni, being satisfied from their conception, by his own, by the emission of his supreme energy and vigor, (acted thus). (13-86-7)
तास्तु षट्कृत्तिका गर्भं पुपुषुर्जातवेदसः। षट्सु वर्त्मसु तेजोऽग्नेः सकलं निहितं प्रभो ॥१३-८६-८॥
tāstu ṣaṭkṛttikā garbhaṃ pupuṣurjātavedasaḥ। ṣaṭsu vartmasu tejo'gneḥ sakalaṃ nihitaṃ prabho॥13-86-8॥
[ताः (tāḥ) - they (feminine); तु (tu) - indeed; षट् (ṣaṭ) - six; कृत्तिका (kṛttikāḥ) - Kṛttikā stars; गर्भम् (garbham) - embryo; पुपुषुः (pupuṣuḥ) - nourished; जातवेदसः (jātavedasaḥ) - of Jātavedas (Agni, Fire); षट्सु (ṣaṭsu) - in six; वर्त्मसु (vartmasu) - paths; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; अग्नेः (agneḥ) - of Agni; सकलम् (sakalaṃ) - entire; निहितम् (nihitam) - placed; प्रभो (prabho) - O Lord;]
(They indeed, the six Kṛttikā stars, nourished the embryo of Jātavedas; in the six paths, the entire splendor of Agni is placed, O Lord.)
O Lord, those six Kṛttikā stars indeed nourished the embryo of Jātavedas; in the six paths, all the splendor of Agni is established. (13-86-8)
ततस्ता वर्धमानस्य कुमारस्य महात्मनः। तेजसाभिपरीताङ्ग्यो न क्वचिच्छर्म लेभिरे ॥१३-८६-९॥
tatastā vardhamānasya kumārasya mahātmanaḥ। tejasābhiparītāṅgyo na kvaciccharma lebhire ॥13-86-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ता (tā) - they (feminine); वर्धमानस्य (vardhamānasya) - of Vardhamāna; कुमारस्य (kumārasya) - of the prince; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; तेजसा (tejasā) - by splendor; अभिपरीताङ्ग्यः (abhiparītāṅgyaḥ) - whose limbs were surrounded; न (na) - not; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; शर्म (śarma) - comfort; लेभिरे (lebhire) - they obtained;]
(Then they, whose limbs were surrounded by the splendor of the great-souled prince Vardhamāna, did not obtain comfort anywhere.)
Then, those women, whose limbs were enveloped by the radiance of the great-souled prince Vardhamāna, did not find comfort anywhere. (13-86-9)
ततस्तेजःपरीताङ्ग्यः सर्वाः काल उपस्थिते। समं गर्भं सुषुविरे कृत्तिकास्ता नरर्षभ ॥१३-८६-१०॥
tatas tejaḥ-parītāṅgyaḥ sarvāḥ kāla upasthite। samaṃ garbhaṃ suṣuvire kṛttikās tā naraṛṣabha॥13-86-10॥
[ततस् (tatas) - then; तेजःपरीताङ्ग्यः (tejaḥ-parītāṅgyaḥ) - of radiant-bodies; (those whose bodies are pervaded by brilliance;) सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; काल (kāla) - (when) time; उपस्थिते (upasthite) - having arrived; समम् (samam) - together; गर्भम् (garbham) - offspring; सुषुविरे (suṣuvire) - they gave birth; कृत्तिकाः (kṛttikāḥ) - the Kṛttikās (Pleiades); ता (tā) - they; नरर्षभ (naraṛṣabha) - O bull among men;]
(Then, those of radiant bodies, all, as time arrived, together offspring they gave birth, the Kṛttikās, they, O bull among men.)
Then, O bull among men, as the appointed time arrived, all the Kṛttikās, whose bodies were filled with brilliance, together gave birth to the child. (13-86-10)
ततस्तं षडधिष्ठानं गर्भमेकत्वमागतम्। पृथिवी प्रतिजग्राह कान्तीपुरसमीपतः ॥१३-८६-११॥
tatastaṁ ṣaḍadhiṣṭhānaṁ garbhamekatvamāgatam। pṛthivī pratijagrāha kāntīpurasamīpataḥ ॥13-86-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम् (tam) - that (accusative, masculine singular); षट्-अधिष्ठानम् (ṣaṭ-adhiṣṭhānam) - having six seats; गर्भम् (garbham) - embryo; एकत्वम्-आगतम् (ekatvam-āgatam) - which had entered into unity; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - received; कान्तीपुर-समीपतः (kāntīpura-samīpataḥ) - in the vicinity of Kāntīpura;]
(Then the earth received that embryo of six seats, which had come to unity, near Kāntīpura.)
Then the earth near Kāntīpura received that embryo possessing six seats, which had become unified. (13-86-11)
स गर्भो दिव्यसंस्थानो दीप्तिमान्पावकप्रभः। दिव्यं शरवणं प्राप्य ववृधे प्रियदर्शनः ॥१३-८६-१२॥
sa garbho divyasaṃsthāno dīptimān pāvakaprabhaḥ. divyaṃ śaravaṇaṃ prāpya vavṛdhe priyadarśanaḥ ॥13-86-12॥
[स (sa) - he; गर्भः (garbhaḥ) - embryo; offspring; दिव्यसंस्थानः (divyasaṃsthānaḥ) - having a divine form; दीप्तिमान् (dīptimān) - radiant; possessing brilliance; पावकप्रभः (pāvakaprabhaḥ) - having the splendor of fire; दिव्यं (divyam) - divine; शरवणं (śaravaṇam) - Sara-vana; thicket of reeds; (proper noun) प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; प्रियदर्शनः (priyadarśanaḥ) - pleasing to the sight;]
(He embryo divine form radiant having the brilliance of fire divine Sara-vana having reached grew pleasing to the sight.)
That offspring, possessing a divine form, radiant, and having the splendor of fire, having reached the divine Sara-vana, grew, pleasing to behold. (13-86-12)
ददृशुः कृत्तिकास्तं तु बालं वह्निसमद्युतिम्। जातस्नेहाश्च सौहार्दात्पुपुषुः स्तन्यविस्रवैः ॥१३-८६-१३॥
dadṛśuḥ kṛttikās taṃ tu bālaṃ vahni-samad-yutim। jāta-snehāś ca sauhārdāt pupuṣuḥ stanya-visravaiḥ ॥13-86-13॥
[ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; कृत्तिकाः (kṛttikāḥ) - the Kṛttikā stars (named nymphs); तं (taṃ) - him; तु (tu) - but; बालं (bālaṃ) - the boy; वह्निसमद्युतिम् (vahni-samad-yutim) - having brightness equal to fire; जातस्नेहाः (jāta-snehāḥ) - who had developed affection; च (ca) - and; सौहार्दात् (sauhārdāt) - from friendship; पुपुषुः (pupuṣuḥ) - nourished; स्तन्यविस्रवैः (stanya-visravaiḥ) - with streams of milk;]
(The Kṛttikā stars saw him but, the boy having brightness equal to fire; who had developed affection and from friendship nourished (him) with streams of milk.)
But the Kṛttikā stars saw the boy, radiant like fire, and, out of affection and friendship, nourished him with streams of milk. (13-86-13)
अभवत्कार्त्तिकेयः स त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे। स्कन्नत्वात्स्कन्दतां चाप गुहावासाद्गुहोऽभवत् ॥१३-८६-१४॥
abhavatkārttikeyaḥ sa trailokye sacarācare. skannatvātskandatāṃ cāpa guhāvāsādguhō'bhavat ॥13-86-14॥
[अभवत् (abhavat) - became; कार्त्तिकेयः (kārttikeyaḥ) - Kārttikeya; स (sa) - he; त्रैलोक्ये (trailokye) - in the three worlds; सचराचरे (sacarācare) - among the moving and unmoving; स्कन्नत्वात् (skannatvāt) - due to having flowed; because of being dropped; स्कन्दतां (skandatām) - the state of Skanda; Skanda-hood; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; गुहावासात् (guhāvāsāt) - from dwelling in a cave; गुहः (guhaḥ) - Guha; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Kārttikeya became he in the three worlds among the moving and unmoving. Due to having flowed, he also the state of Skanda, and from dwelling in a cave, he became Guha. (13-86-14))
He became Kārttikeya, renowned among all beings in the three worlds, both moving and unmoving. Because he was dropped (or flowed), he became known as Skanda; and since he dwelled in a cave, he became Guha. (13-86-14)
ततो देवास्त्रयस्त्रिंशद्दिशश्च सदिगीश्वराः। रुद्रो धाता च विष्णुश्च यज्ञः पूषार्यमा भगः ॥१३-८६-१५॥
tato devās trayastriṁśad diśaś ca sa-dig-īśvarāḥ। rudro dhātā ca viṣṇuś ca yajñaḥ pūṣā aryamā bhagaḥ॥13-86-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; त्रयस्त्रिंशत् (trayastriṁśat) - thirty-three; दिशः (diśaḥ) - regions (directions); च (ca) - and; स-दिg-ईश्वराः (sa-dig-īśvarāḥ) - with the lords of the directions; रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; धाता (dhātā) - Dhātṛ (the sustainer); च (ca) - and; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; च (ca) - and; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - Yajña (Sacrifice personified); पूषा (pūṣā) - Pūṣan; अर्यमा (aryamā) - Aryaman; भगः (bhagaḥ) - Bhaga;]

Then the thirty-three gods, together with the directions and their lords—Rudra, Dhātṛ, Viṣṇu, Yajña (the personification of sacrifice), Pūṣan, Aryaman, and Bhaga—(were present). (13-86-15)
अंशो मित्रश्च साध्याश्च वसवो वासवोऽश्विनौ। आपो वायुर्नभश्चन्द्रो नक्षत्राणि ग्रहा रविः ॥१३-८६-१६॥

शयानं शरगुल्मस्थं दृष्ट्वा देवाः सहर्षिभिः। लेभिरे परमं हर्षं मेनिरे चासुरं हतम् ॥१३-८६-१९॥
śayānaṃ śaragulmasthaṃ dṛṣṭvā devāḥ saharṣibhiḥ। lebhire paramaṃ harṣaṃ menire cāsuraṃ hatam ॥13-86-19॥

(Having seen (him) lying situated in the thicket of arrows, the gods together with the sages obtained supreme joy and considered the asura slain.)
When the gods, along with the sages, saw (him) lying in the thicket of arrows, they felt great joy and thought the asura was slain. (13-86-19)
ततो देवाः प्रियाण्यस्य सर्व एव समाचरन्। क्रीडतः क्रीडनीयानि ददुः पक्षिगणांश्च ह ॥१३-८६-२०॥

वर्धमानं तु तं दृष्ट्वा प्रार्थयामास तारकः। उपायैर्बहुभिर्हन्तुं नाशकच्चापि तं विभुम् ॥१३-८६-२६॥
vardhamānaṃ tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā prārthayāmāsa tārakaḥ। upāyair bahubhir hantuṃ nāśakat cāpi taṃ vibhum॥13-86-26॥

स विवृद्धो महावीर्यो देवसेनापतिः प्रभुः। जघानामोघया शक्त्या दानवं तारकं गुहः ॥१३-८६-२८॥

तेन तस्मिन्कुमारेण क्रीडता निहतेऽसुरे। सुरेन्द्रः स्थापितो राज्ये देवानां पुनरीश्वरः ॥१३-८६-२९॥
tena tasmin kumāreṇa krīḍatā nihate'sure. surendraḥ sthāpito rājye devānāṃ punar īśvaraḥ ॥13-86-29॥

हिरण्यमूर्तिर्भगवानेष एव च पावकिः। सदा कुमारो देवानां सेनापत्यमवाप्तवान् ॥१३-८६-३१॥
hiraṇyamūrtir bhagavān eṣa eva ca pāvakiḥ। sadā kumāro devānāṃ senāpatyam avāptavān ॥13-86-31॥

तस्मात्सुवर्णं मङ्गल्यं रत्नमक्षय्यमुत्तमम्। सहजं कार्त्तिकेयस्य वह्नेस्तेजः परं मतम् ॥१३-८६-३२॥
tasmātsuvarṇaṁ maṅgalyaṁ ratnam akṣayyamutamam। sahajaṁ kārttikeyasya vahnes tejaḥ paraṁ matam ॥13-86-32॥

एवं रामाय कौरव्य वसिष्ठोऽकथयत्पुरा। तस्मात्सुवर्णदानाय प्रयतस्व नराधिप ॥१३-८६-३३॥
evaṁ rāmāya kauravya vasiṣṭho'kathayat purā। tasmāt suvarṇadānāya prayatasva narādhipa ॥13-86-33॥
