cāturvarṇyasya dharmātmandharmaḥ proktastvayānagha। tathaiva me śrāddhavidhiṃ kṛtsnaṃ prabrūhi pārthiva ॥13-87-1॥
[चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य (cāturvarṇyasya) - of the four varṇas; धर्मात्मन् (dharmātman) - O virtuous one; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; प्रोक्तः (proktaḥ) - has been stated; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; मे (me) - to me; श्राद्धविधिं (śrāddhavidhim) - the entire ritual of Śrāddha; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnaṃ) - entirely; प्रब्रूहि (prabrūhi) - tell (imperative); पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Of the four varṇas, O virtuous one, the duty has been stated by you, O sinless one. In the same way, to me the Śrāddha ritual entirely tell, O king.)
O virtuous and sinless one, you have described the duties of the four varṇas; in the same way, tell me fully the entire Śrāddha ritual, O king. (13-87-1)

देवासुरमनुष्याणां गन्धर्वोरगरक्षसाम्। पिशाचकिंनराणां च पूज्या वै पितरः सदा ॥१३-८७-४॥
devāsuramanuṣyāṇāṃ gandharvoragarakṣasām। piśācakiṃnarāṇāṃ ca pūjyā vai pitaraḥ sadā ॥13-87-4॥

The ancestors are always worthy of honor for gods, demons, humans, gandharvas, serpents, rākṣasas, piśācas, and kinnaras. (13-87-4)
पितॄन्पूज्यादितः पश्चाद्देवान्सन्तर्पयन्ति वै। तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन पुरुषः पूजयेत्सदा ॥१३-८७-५॥

(That which is to be eaten after, O great king, is called the śrāddha of the ancestors. And that rite, with non-flesh (vegetarian) food by rite, was originally ordained.)
O great king, what is eaten afterwards is called the śrāddha for the ancestors. Originally, this rite was established with non-meat (vegetarian) offerings by ritual. (13-87-6)
सर्वेष्वहःसु प्रीयन्ते कृतैः श्राद्धैः पितामहाः। प्रवक्ष्यामि तु ते सर्वांस्तिथ्यां तिथ्यां गुणागुणान् ॥१३-८७-७॥
sarveṣvahaḥsu prīyante kṛtaiḥ śrāddhaiḥ pitāmahāḥ। pravakṣyāmi tu te sarvāṁstithyāṁ tithyāṁ guṇāguṇān ॥13-87-7॥

(On all days, are pleased by performed śrāddha ceremonies, the ancestors. I shall declare but to you all, every lunar day, the merits and demerits.)

येष्वहःसु कृतैः श्राद्धैर्यत्फलं प्राप्यतेऽनघ। तत्सर्वं कीर्तयिष्यामि यथावत्तन्निबोध मे ॥१३-८७-८॥
yeṣvahaḥsu kṛtaiḥ śrāddhair yat phalaṃ prāpyate 'nagha। tat sarvaṃ kīrtayiṣyāmi yathāvat tan nibodha me ॥13-87-8॥
[येषु (yeṣu) - in which; (plural locative of 'ya') अहःसु (ahaḥsu) - on days; (plural locative of 'ahaḥ', day;) कृतैः (kṛtaiḥ) - performed; (instrumental plural of 'kṛta', done;) श्राद्धैः (śrāddhaiḥ) - by śrāddhas; (instrumental plural;) यत् (yat) - which; (relative pronoun;) फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; result; प्राप्यते (prāpyate) - is obtained; अनघ ('nagha) - O sinless one; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; कीर्तयिष्यामि (kīrtayiṣyāmi) - I shall declare; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as it is; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; मे (me) - from me;]
(In which days, by śrāddhas performed, which fruit is obtained, O sinless one, that all I shall declare as it is; that understand from me.)
O sinless one, I shall declare to you, as it is, all the results obtained from śrāddhas performed on those days; understand that from me. (13-87-8)
पितॄनर्च्य प्रतिपदि प्राप्नुयात्स्वगृहे स्त्रियः। अभिरूपप्रजायिन्यो दर्शनीया बहुप्रजाः ॥१३-८७-९॥
pitṝn arcya pratipadi prāpnuyāt svagṛhe striyaḥ। abhirūpaprajāyinyaḥ darśanīyā bahuprajāḥ॥13-87-9॥
[पितॄन् (pitṝn) - forefathers; अर्च्य (arcya) - having worshipped; प्रतिपदि (pratipadi) - on the first day; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - may obtain; स्वगृहे (svagṛhe) - in own house; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; अभिरूपप्रजायिन्यः (abhirūpaprajāyinyaḥ) - bearing beautiful offspring; दर्शनीयाः (darśanīyāḥ) - worthy of being seen; बहुप्रजाः (bahuprajāḥ) - having many children;]
(Forefathers having worshipped on the first day, may obtain in own house women bearing beautiful offspring, worthy of being seen, having many children.)
Having worshipped the forefathers on the first day, one may obtain in his own house women who bear beautiful children, are attractive, and have many offspring. (13-87-9)
स्त्रियो द्वितीयां जायन्ते तृतीयायां तु वन्दिनः। चतुर्थ्यां क्षुद्रपशवो भवन्ति बहवो गृहे ॥१३-८७-१०॥
striyo dvitīyāṁ jāyante tṛtīyāyāṁ tu vandinaḥ. caturthyāṁ kṣudrapaśavo bhavanti bahavo gṛhe ॥13-87-10॥
[स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; द्वितीयाम् (dvitīyām) - in the second (year); जायन्ते (jāyante) - are born; तृतीयायाम् (tṛtīyāyām) - in the third (year); तु (tu) - but; वन्दिनः (vandinaḥ) - bards; चतुर्थ्याम् (caturthyām) - in the fourth (year); क्षुद्रपशवः (kṣudrapaśavaḥ) - small animals; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house;]
(Women in the second (year) are born; in the third (year) but bards; in the fourth (year) small animals are many in the house.)
Women are born in the second year; but in the third year, bards, and in the fourth year, many small animals are found in the house. (13-87-10)
पञ्चम्यां बहवः पुत्रा जायन्ते कुर्वतां नृप। कुर्वाणास्तु नराः षष्ठ्यां भवन्ति द्युतिभागिनः ॥१३-८७-११॥
pañcamyāṁ bahavaḥ putrā jāyante kurvatāṁ nṛpa। kurvāṇāstu narāḥ ṣaṣṭhyāṁ bhavanti dyutibhāginaḥ ॥13-87-11॥
[पञ्चम्याम् (pañcamyām) - in the fifth (nakṣatra); बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; जायन्ते (jāyante) - are born; कुर्वताम् (kurvatām) - of those performing (rites); नृप (nṛpa) - O king; कुर्वाणाः (kurvāṇāḥ) - those who perform (rites); तु (tu) - but; नराः (narāḥ) - men; षष्ठ्याम् (ṣaṣṭhyām) - in the sixth (nakṣatra); भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; द्युतिभागिनः (dyutibhāginaḥ) - possessed of splendor;]
(In the fifth, many sons are born, of those performing (rites), O king. Those men, however, performing (rites) in the sixth become possessed of splendor.)
O king, many sons are born to those performing rites on the fifth nakṣatra; but those men who perform on the sixth become endowed with splendor. (13-87-11)
कृषिभागी भवेच्छ्राद्धं कुर्वाणः सप्तमीं नृप। अष्टम्यां तु प्रकुर्वाणो वाणिज्ये लाभमाप्नुयात् ॥१३-८७-१२॥
kṛṣibhāgī bhavecchrāddhaṃ kurvāṇaḥ saptamīṃ nṛpa। aṣṭamyāṃ tu prakurvāṇo vāṇijye lābhamāpnuyāt ॥13-87-12॥
[कृषिभागी (kṛṣibhāgī) - one engaged in agriculture; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; श्राद्धं (śrāddham) - the śrāddha ceremony; कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - performing; सप्तमीं (saptamīm) - on the seventh (day); नृप (nṛpa) - O king; अष्टम्यां (aṣṭamyām) - on the eighth (day); तु (tu) - but; प्रकुर्वाणः (prakurvāṇaḥ) - performing especially; वाणिज्ये (vāṇijye) - in trade; लाभम् (lābham) - profit; आप्नुयात् (āpnuyāt) - might obtain;]
(One engaged in agriculture should perform the śrāddha ceremony on the seventh day, O king. But performing it on the eighth day, one might obtain profit in trade.)
O king, one involved in agriculture should perform the śrāddha on the seventh day; but if it is performed on the eighth day, one may attain profit in trade. (13-87-12)
नवम्यां कुर्वतः श्राद्धं भवत्येकशफं बहु। विवर्धन्ते तु दशमीं गावः श्राद्धानि कुर्वतः ॥१३-८७-१३॥
navamyāṁ kurvataḥ śrāddhaṁ bhavat yekaśaphaṁ bahu| vivardhante tu daśamīṁ gāvaḥ śrāddhāni kurvataḥ॥13-87-13॥
[नवम्यां (navamyām) - on the ninth (tithi); कुर्वतः (kurvataḥ) - of one performing; श्राद्धं (śrāddham) - oblation to ancestors; भवति (bhavati) - arises; एकशफं (ekaśapham) - one-hoofed (animal, i.e., horse); बहु (bahu) - many; विवर्धन्ते (vivardhante) - increase; तु (tu) - but; दशमीं (daśamīm) - on the tenth (tithi); गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; श्राद्धानि (śrāddhāni) - oblations to ancestors; कुर्वतः (kurvataḥ) - of one performing;]
(On the ninth, of one performing the śrāddha, there arises one-hoofed (animal, i.e., horse) many; but on the tenth, cows increase for one performing the śrāddha.)
When one performs the śrāddha on the ninth day, the merit results in many one-hoofed animals (such as horses); but when one performs it on the tenth day, the merit yields an increase of cows. (13-87-13)
कुप्यभागी भवेन्मर्त्यः कुर्वन्नेकादशीं नृप। ब्रह्मवर्चस्विनः पुत्रा जायन्ते तस्य वेश्मनि ॥१३-८७-१४॥
kupyabhāgī bhavenmartyaḥ kurvannekādaśīṃ nṛpa। brahmavarcasvinaḥ putrā jāyante tasya veśmani ॥13-87-14॥
[कुप्यभागी (kupyabhāgī) - recipient of vessels (gifts); भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; मर्त्यः (martyaḥ) - mortal; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - performing; एकादशीं (ekādaśīm) - Ekadashi (the eleventh day of the lunar fortnight); नृप (nṛpa) - O king; ब्रह्मवर्चस्विनः (brahmavarcasvinaḥ) - endowed with Brahmic radiance; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; जायन्ते (jāyante) - are born; तस्य (tasya) - of him; वेश्मनि (veśmani) - in the house;]
(Recipient of vessels becomes the mortal performing Ekadashi, O king. Endowed with Brahmic radiance sons are born in his house.)
O king, a mortal performing Ekadashi becomes a recipient of vessels (auspicious gifts); sons endowed with Brahmic radiance are born in his house. (13-87-14)
द्वादश्यामीहमानस्य नित्यमेव प्रदृश्यते। रजतं बहु चित्रं च सुवर्णं च मनोरमम् ॥१३-८७-१५॥
dvādaśyām īhamānasya nityam eva pradṛśyate। rajataṃ bahu citraṃ ca suvarṇaṃ ca manoramam ॥13-87-15॥
[द्वादश्याम् (dvādaśyām) - on the twelfth lunar day; इहमानस्य (īhamānasya) - of the one desiring here; नित्यमेव (nityam eva) - always indeed; प्रदृश्यते (pradṛśyate) - is seen; रजतं (rajataṃ) - silver; बहु (bahu) - much; चित्रं (citraṃ) - various; च (ca) - and; सुवर्णं (suvarṇaṃ) - gold; च (ca) - and; मनोरमम् (manoramam) - beautiful;]
(On the twelfth lunar day, for the one desiring here, always indeed is seen much silver, various and gold and beautiful.)
On the twelfth day, one who desires here always sees abundant silver, various and beautiful gold. (13-87-15)
ज्ञातीनां तु भवेच्छ्रेष्ठः कुर्वञ्श्राद्धं त्रयोदशीम्। अवश्यं तु युवानोऽस्य प्रमीयन्ते नरा गृहे ॥१३-८७-१६॥
jñātīnāṁ tu bhavecchreṣṭhaḥ kurvañśrāddhaṁ trayodaśīm। avaśyaṁ tu yuvāno'sya pramīyante narā gṛhe ॥13-87-16॥
[ज्ञातीनां (jñātīnāṁ) - of the relatives; तु (tu) - however; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - best; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - performing; श्राद्धम् (śrāddham) - śrāddha ceremony; त्रयोदशीम् (trayodaśīm) - on the thirteenth (lunar day); अवश्यं (avaśyam) - certainly; तु (tu) - however; युवानः (yuvānaḥ) - young men; अस्य (asya) - of him; प्रमीयन्ते (pramīyante) - perish; नराः (narāḥ) - men; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house;]
(Of the relatives, however, he should be best, performing the śrāddha on the thirteenth. Certainly, however, the young men of him perish, men in the house.)
Among relatives, he is considered the best who performs the śrāddha on the thirteenth day; otherwise, young men of his household certainly perish. (13-87-16)
युद्धभागी भवेन्मर्त्यः श्राद्धं कुर्वंश्चतुर्दशीम्। अमावास्यां तु निवपन्सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात् ॥१३-८७-१७॥

(A mortal participating in battle may become (so) by performing śrāddha on the fourteenth day; but offering (oblations) on new moon day, he may attain all desires.)
A mortal by participating in battle is like one who performs śrāddha on the fourteenth lunar day; but by offering oblations on new moon day, he may attain all desires. (13-87-17)
कृष्णपक्षे दशम्यादौ वर्जयित्वा चतुर्दशीम्। श्राद्धकर्मणि तिथ्यः स्युः प्रशस्ता न तथेतराः ॥१३-८७-१८॥

यथा चैवापरः पक्षः पूर्वपक्षाद्विशिष्यते। तथा श्राद्धस्य पूर्वाह्णादपराह्णो विशिष्यते ॥१३-८७-१९॥

[यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अपरः (aparaḥ) - later; पक्षः (pakṣaḥ) - half of a lunar month; पूर्वपक्षात् (pūrvapakṣāt) - than the earlier half of the lunar month; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is distinguished; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; श्राद्धस्य (śrāddhasya) - of the śrāddha; पूर्वाह्णात् (pūrvāhṇāt) - than the forenoon; अपराह्णः (aparāhṇaḥ) - afternoon; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - is distinguished;]
(Just as indeed the latter half is distinguished than the earlier half of the lunar month, so too for the śrāddha, the afternoon is distinguished than the forenoon.)
Just as the latter half of the lunar month is superior to the earlier half, so also, for the śrāddha, the afternoon is superior to the forenoon. (13-87-19)
